Fresh Perspective THE DURHAM CAFE BY CLEAN SLATE OPENS

When a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity comes, the best entrepreneurs don’t just jump at the opportunity, they consider the pros and cons. For Clean Slate, a local eatery that got its start in meal delivery, the impact that could result from a partnership with The Joslyn Museum was pivotal.

“We try to put out good food with integrity,” said co-founder Dylan Thompson. “We want to put out interesting and good food … with a minimal footprint.”

That mission resonated with Joslyn Museum leadership, who in early August announced that they had selected Clean Slate to head the Durham Cafe operations.

Be the change

Founded in 2018 by Dylan Thompson and Jamen Danielson, the meal delivery service opened a public physical presence at Millwork Commons in January 2023.

The Millwork Commons Cafe expanded the company’s offerings, adding a full-service sit-down cafe to its roster.

The founding duo both had experience in the hospitality industry and

had witnessed how wasteful it could be.

“We wanted to make sure we were not part of the problem, but part of the solution,” Thompson said. “Everything in the cafe is recyclable, compostable, or reusable.

“It is more expensive, and there are more steps in the educational pieces, but it’s really important to us.”

When Joslyn sent out a request for proposals, adding another location wasn’t on Clean Slate’s menu.

“We just realized how great of an opportunity it was,” Thompson said.

Vision alignment

For their part, the leadership team at The Joslyn has been working to make the campus zero-waste.

“The Joslyn added glass and compost streams to our already existing recycling program that includes ‘orange bag’ capture,” said Erin Foley, director of finances and special projects.

“Our sustainable landscape design includes mostly native plants that will thrive with less water usage, and our drainage system is designed to minimize the amount of runoff that ends up in the city sewer system.”

We’re not going to copy and paste it over. It’s a different clientele, and so we’re accounting for that in the menu.

Adding a food partner that aligned with those goals made sense, and Clean Slate fit the bill perfectly. Clean Slate’s fresh take on food, as well as their focus on minimal waste, made them the unanimous choice for Joslyn leadership.

“They had both the creative right and left brain that’s needed to have a successful restaurant,” Foley said. “I remember we just felt like we had really good chemistry with them, too.”

Creative flair

Heading the Durham Cafe at The Joslyn will be Chef Billy Le. Le, born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska, has been involved with Clean Slate since the beginning, helping in the kitchen and as a food photographer.

“He’s a very talented individual,” Thompson said. “He was elsewhere in the food scene, making an impact, and I think we found him again at the right time.”

Le joined Clean Slate as a full-time chef two years ago.

“It was a perfect fit,” Le said. “I really appreciate the integrity here, and how everybody treats food and customers.”

Thompson and Le have been working on a menu that Le said is “similar, but different” from Clean Slates Millwork Commons cafe.

“We’re not going to copy and paste it over,” he said. “It’s a different clientele, and so we’re accounting for that in the menu.”

The focus will continue to be on healthy, wholesome meals, that can be enjoyed by a diverse population, including those with dietary restrictions, such as gluten intolerance.

Foley said that the team’s willingness to create temporary menus inspired by exhibits or to participate in special events, played into their decision.

- BILLY LE, HEAD CHEF, THE DURHAM CAFE PRESENTED BY CLEAN SLATE

“There’s a lot to come and we’re just really excited to see it all come together,” Thompson said.

The Durham Cafe is now open alongside the historic building, and the new addition.

STEERING THROUGH OPPORTUNITIES

AND CHALLENGES

JAVIER FERNANDEZ

Many new CEOs struggle in their first 18 months, with over 90% wishing they had managed the transition better, a McKinsey survey reports.

Meanwhile, CEOs are navigating shifts in the workforce, economy and technology during an election year and locally, five CEOs shared their journey to the C-Suite along with advice for 2024 and beyond.

Values run deep

“No one ever got where they were going without experiencing lots of things,” said Jackie Miller, CEO, owner of Bozell since April. “Do what’s asked, then ask for more.”

As a “military brat,” she said, born in Oslo, her journey has been marked by adaptability, resilience, and a deep commitment to values. Early dreams of professional soccer were derailed by injury, but she discovered a passion through a high school PR project igniting a career in marketing and communication. She was like a “chameleon” tackling roles, from HR to digital strategy and climbing the ranks to CEO.

“I’ve never waited for somebody to give me a seat at the table,” Miller said. “I just bring my own folding chair.”

Joining Bozell meant navigating the business through leadership transitions, the pandemic, industry changes and many decisions.

“Agile development should just be agile decision-making in my mind,”

Miller said. “You do what you need to do when you need to do it, and the world changes not on your time span. Having a plan is important, but I never

PATRICIA

JEFF

put one together assuming what’s going to happen.”

How you function as CEO includes self-awareness enough to know that how you got there, she said, isn’t necessarily who you need to be in the role. An executive coach helped her align her values with the vision at Bozell, which is to empower people aspiring to change the world.

Miller adds, “If you think about it like a pebble in a pond, there’s ripples that happen and we need to be dedicated to helping improve those things.”

True North Star

Javier Fernandez, CEO of Omaha Public Power District since 2021, emphasized faith and staying true to personal values. The job comes along with it.

“As long as you stay true to those first two, then you can do the third really well,” Fernandez said.

His path to CEO was unusual having started in finance and banking after immigrating from Mexico. Experiencing the utility industry later in his career, he moved from Oregon to Nebraska in favor of spending more time with his family, and traveling less. He said you have to give 110% to whatever you’re doing, but that remembering to enjoy life is equally important. That personal investment has helped grow Fernandez’s sense of pride, and loyalty to his community.

“This country has given me so much. I feel the need to give back to the community,” he said.

His tip for new CEOs: “Be true to what your North Star is.”

Team belief

After nearly 14 years as president and CEO of QLI Patricia Kearns will be stepping down in 2025.

“Believe in the potential of your team members — all of them,” she said. Her career as a physical therapist at QLI began almost 24 years ago. The organization provided her with opportunities to develop operational knowledge and leadership skills.

“Being surrounded by people who genuinely care about you creates a sense of belonging that’s hard to walk away from,” Kearns said. “Not everyone will desire a leadership role, but every team member deserves for you to open the door for them to grow into the best version of themselves. You may be surprised who rises to the top.”

Perspective on experiences

For Jeff Russell, the path to becoming president and CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska was a winding road.

He noted his education in journalism and political science provided a beneficial background for leadership, but everyone learns on the job.

“There is nothing that prepares you for the seat until being in the seat,” he said.

He emphasized checking your initial instincts to see which decisions you should be making and which you should help facilitate the team to make.

“You have to ask good questions, organize the information from the most important to the least important and communicate effectively,” Russell said. “These are things that I use every day.”

With previous roles including marketing, technology, product development, finance and operations, he often shares with interns that varied experiences are more important than a list of jobs on a resume.

“The idea that there’s this ladder that you climb from A to B to C to D, to get to that [CEO] is probably less relevant in today’s world,” Russell said. “You have to be a lifelong learner and be willing to try new things.”

He noted a danger for new CEOs in a rapidly changing world is “to try and do it all.”

“We have to move at the pace that our customers and the market is moving,” he said. “My role is to make sure that we don’t outstrip the gears of the organization — that we make sure we’re focused on the right things.”

Don’t get stuck

Paul Maass recently celebrated eight years as CEO of Scoular. He tells his team that you have to take risks, embrace making decisions, and pivot when needed to avoid getting stuck.

“You have to learn how to make decisions with imperfect and incomplete information,” Maass said.

Maass shared that at one point he needed to make a pivotal career decision: become a good No. 2 or become CEO. An executive coach encouraged him to find an answer. Maass spoke with several CEOs before deciding on a CEO role.

He’s learned to have fun and find out what changes are needed to make the job at the top more enjoyable.

Surprisingly, Maass is spending more time on finding talent in the CEO role than he did as a division leader, he said, realizing how critical it is to develop people for success.

“You’ve got to have the right people on the bus,” he said. That’s always going to be important and it’s such a big part of being an effective leader.”

Leading culture

Stanton Chase, a global search firm, reports CEOs in 2024 will be leading through a generation shift where, historically, there will be more individuals from Generation Z than Baby Boomers. Nebraska CEOs place emphasis on an effective, mission-driven and diverse culture.

Fernandez highlighted connecting work to a higher purpose, especially for

Millennials and Gen Z, comparing culture to growing a garden.

“If you don’t cultivate the ground and if you don’t really invest in in creating a welcoming culture for all people, from all different backgrounds, it doesn’t matter how many seeds of tomatoes are planted, they won’t grow,” Fernandez said.

Miller’s approach is keeping the workforce aligned with the Bozell vision.

“Having a team of people who feel like they have some sense of authority over what they do is important,” she said. “At the end of the day, regardless of the generation they’re from, I try to set guardrails. I tell everybody the same thing, ‘We’re going to try it. And if it works, we’ll keep doing it. If it doesn’t, we’ll try something else.’”

At BCBSNE, Russell is “normalizing” a hybrid environment, building a strong culture with part of the workforce on site and part in rural Nebraska maximizing diverse talent.

Maass is focusing on in-person relationships and modifying policies to strengthen company culture in Scoular’s post-pandemic hybrid environment. He emphasizes respect in an inclusive workplace, cautioning against defining diversity too narrowly.

Leveraging technology

As technologies proliferate, CEOs define how lasting value can be captured and scaled, according to McKinsey & Company 2024 report. For Omaha CEOs the focus is on efficiency, taking technology in stride with a customer focus.

“I push my team to be externally engaged,” Maass said. “Technology is going to change how our work gets done. It’s going to change what our customers expect from us.”

Fernandez said technology is an enabler for OPPD’s transformation, using AI-powered drones to enhance efficiency during emergencies such as the

recent storms in Omaha.

For QLI, AI is impacting rehabilitation and long-term care.

“The latest and upcoming environmental technologies will increasingly give more control to the individuals we serve and reduce some of the workload for our direct care team members,” Kearns said.

Russell described AI enhancing user interactions and simplifying health care information for BCBSNE consumers to “help them live their best and healthiest life.”

Navigating politics

Littler’s employer survey revealed that 87% of employers are concerned about managing divisive political beliefs among employees as the election approaches.

Fernandez emphasized the importance of staying focused on OPPD’s mission, regardless of political tensions.

“What I keep reminding people is, you know what, at the end of the day our electrons have no color. They’re neither red, nor blue,” Fernandez said. “Our main objective is providing reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy services.”

Russell and Maass both acknowledge the impact of polarization on their organizations but focus on what matters using challenges as opportunities to unite teams.

Miller said people are “hungry” for businesses and advertising to not just be selling them things or telling about problems, but instead, solving them.

“I want to instill that in the next generation of people, because we’re human beings with one another, and we care about where we’re all going in the communities that we serve,” Miller said. “We can have conversations, even if they’re tough ones. I have a strong belief in not burning the bridge down. Just walk off the other side of it.”

A Popping Business

DUNDEE POPCORN TRANSFORMING MICROWAVE POPCORN

A lifelong connoisseur of commercial microwave popcorn at the time, Ericka Whaley decided to take a peek at what was actually in her bag. She did not like what she saw.

“My business can be traced back to one night in 2019, when I cut open a bag of un-popped microwave popcorn and shook the contents out onto a plate,” she said. “I love popcorn, but when I saw the raw ingredients of what I was eating and what I was feeding my young kids, I didn’t want it anymore!”

It looked gross, she went on, nothing like butter at all.

“And my first thought was, ‘Why isn’t there something that tastes amazing and has a clean food emphasis?’” she said.

That rude awakening would go on to represent the kernel for a popping Dundee-based business, the aptly named Dundee Popcorn.

“I started making my own buttered popcorn and experimented with different flavors after that,” Whaley said.

Prior to officially starting the business in July 2022, Whaley had worked

at the Omaha World-Herald for 15 years, in advertising mostly.

“As my career at the paper took different turns, I always tried to stay in a curious mindset,” she recalled. “When I was in school, I felt that the smartest people around me knew a lot about a lot of different things and they were continually learning.”

So, when Whaley started to develop her popcorn business idea, she took a page from that book, not rushing her way through the process, striving to acquire as much information as possible about the food industry as she transitioned away from the newspaper industry.

“I finally took the leap and asked people I didn’t know to buy my products at the Omaha Farmers Market,” she said. “I love being part of the community of small business there and we just turned two years old, which was exciting.”

When asked about what she typically hears from fans of Dundee Popcorn, Whaley said they often call it the best popcorn they’ve ever tasted — which she said means a lot because, “Popcorn usually tastes delicious, no

matter what brand you usually buy.”

- ERICKA WHALEY, FOUNDER OF DUNDEE POPCORN.

“I like to call it ‘clean food,’” she continued. “It’s real butter, popcorn kernels grown right here in Nebraska, and seasonings for whatever flavor you prefer. There aren’t any dyes or preservatives or artificial flavorings at all. So, it’s made with worry-free ingredients and it tastes better my way.”

Others apparently think so, too, as the business’s growth shows in numerous ways, no less her partnerships with area stores.

“I’m currently selling in Made in Omaha stores, at The Highlander, The Village Grinder and Cup and Cone in Bennington,” she confirmed. “I also sell via my website and I’m working on getting into more local stores — stay tuned.”

A hunger for real food

As Dundee Popcorn’s reach grows, Whaley indicated how she acquires more and more insightful and valuable information from other entrepreneurs.

“I enjoy hearing feedback from store owners and I appreciate their knowledge as I continue to grow my own business,” she added.

Another source of considerable pride has been hearing from other people who know of Dundee Popcorn — even if they are just meeting Whaley for the first time.

“I feel so much pride when I see mentions on social media or if I see my branded tote bags out and about,” she said. “The feedback has been outstanding so far. So, I feel like things are definitely going the right direction.”

This summer, Whaley received further validation courtesy of Dundee Popcorn taking top honors at the No More Empty Pots (NMEP)/Midwest Dairy Pitch Contest.

“I have cooked at NMEP for two years and I’ve participated in different workshops they’ve hosted before, but this is by far the most challenging contest I’ve tried to win,” she recalled. “This contest seemed like a great fit for my business since each recipe I use has an emphasis on real butter. So, I’m glad I tried even though I felt very out of my league at first.”

Most of the $10,000 in contest winnings will go toward the creation of a new website, according to Whaley.

“This way, when people who have never tried my brand before visit my website and online store they’ll see something that looks as high value as it tastes,” she explained. “When the new site is ready, my focus will be building awareness outside of the Omaha area via advertising.”

When asked about goals, a tasty proposition for Whaley would be an actual storefront in the Dundee neighborhood.

“I believe that’s in the cards for me eventually,” she said. “Until that happens, I am going to focus on growing sales of my microwave boxes direct to Omahans and in retail stores like I have been, and I will have ready-to-eat popcorn available later this year as well.”

Whaley also confirmed that she is open to opportunities and ideas for cross-promotions too. As the business grows beyond Dundee, she continues to celebrate its roots in the venerable community within a community.

“I grew up in the area, from day care and elementary school all the way

through college when my husband and I had our first date at the Dundee Theater (we saw a midnight showing of ‘Back to the Future’),” she recalled.

“The Dundee area is beautiful, historic, diverse and all-around a great location within the city. My family and I are constantly eating at the many restaurants, and it’s a good place to explore and walk around.”

Transforming Beauty INSIDE XENON – A STEPHANIE MOSS ACADEMY

When you walk into Xenon – A Stephanie Moss Academy in Omaha, you are greeted by smiling faces. The tour includes the main education area where students demonstrate their skills, and a counter with hundreds of colors ready for mixing.

“It can get messy but that’s been a huge win,” said Stephanie Moss, founder and co-owner of the academy. “We’re making that chemistry part of their schooling more visible for guests.”

She and her husband Ryan Moss, co-owner, completed a state-ofthe-art remodel after acquiring the Omaha and Grand Island academy locations in 2022. They reopened in September 2023. Upgrades in Omaha included classroom education rooms and hands-on skill development programs in cosmetology, esthetics and barbering.

Education and inspiration

Originally from Iowa, Stephanie Moss’s journey began in 2002 with

her cosmetology degree. Her work with a mentor led her to teach color classes with L’Oréal National, traveling across the United States.

“I realized that I loved passing that knowledge on and inspiring people,” she said.

In 2008, at age 25, she and her then-future husband opened their first salon, which is now Stephanie Moss Salon at Village Pointe. They married the next year. That experience led her to an invitation from Bill Peel, one of the original partners of Xenon International Academy.

“They were looking at maybe retiring and asked, ‘Is it something that we’d like to do?’” she said. “I looked at Ryan and asked, ‘Hey, do you want to quit your great job and come run a beauty school with your wife?’ And here we are today.”

Ryan Moss, a licensed therapist with experience in hospital settings and regulatory requirements, now handles the business and financial side for Xenon.

Beauty boom

The U.S. Department of Labor projects faster growth in employment for barbers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists than all other occupations through 2032, with an average of 89,400 openings each year.

Stephanie Moss said there is room for competition between schools.

“We are one of two barber schools in Nebraska, and I think we’re one of four in aesthetics,” she said. “Cosmetology is the biggest common denominator for schools.”

According to ibisworld.com, the cosmetology industry’s postCOVID-19 revenue has grown over the last five years to an estimated $2.2 billion in 2024.

Schools like Xenon will continue to benefit from increased demand for personal services. Data reflects diversity with 89% of students being women and approximately a third being African American or Latino.

Ryan Moss said most of their students are just out of high school, but diversity also extends to those changing careers.

“There are also people who have gone to a typical four-year college and decided, ‘This isn’t for me,’” he said.

According to the American Association for Cosmetology Schools, more than 1,500 U.S. for-profit beauty schools are graduating workforce ready students through specialized training. Graduation rates are 76% with an average student debt of less than $9,000.

“Not only can you start working sooner, but it’s also probably going to cost you less,” Ryan Moss said. “What sets us apart is Stephanie, who is still behind the chair, actively teaching and staying current.”

High expectations

Stephanie Moss said expectations are high for student academics and attendance.

“Meeting those standards, passing their licenses and practical work is

difficult,” she said. “While we have high expectations for them, we also have a lot of fun with them, and we want to see them succeed.”

The Xenon curriculum includes a business class every week throughout the program.

“Yes, it’s about talent, but in this industry, your business mindset has to be just as strong to really elevate what they’re doing,” she said.

Each student enrolled at Xenon receives a rolling cart filled with all the tools they need to complete their program and start their career.

“They don’t have to buy better shears or blow dryers,” she said. “Our students are set up for success from the moment they walk out of this beauty school.”

Always adapting

The beauty industry is ever-evolving, requiring adaptation. Top brands like Amplify and Sugar Lash play a key role in the updated Xenon curriculum by certifying cosmetology and aesthetic students. With a growing interest in barbering, Xenon’s Omaha location now has a yearlong waitlist, and efforts are underway to introduce the program in Grand Island to meet demand in Nebraska.

The co-owners manage workload effectively across both locations by retaining strong leadership and experienced instructors. Ryan Moss said they develop future leaders by offering a cosmetology instructor program.

“We genuinely want our students to succeed,” he said. “I love talking, laughing and really getting to know them.”

“It’s lively here. If we had a reality show, it would probably do well because of the students’ fun personalities,” Stepahnie Moss said. “I tell my students all the time that I’m still excited every day to do what I love.”

Hustle Conference Q&A

GREATER OMAHA CHAMBER

Meant for both established small businesses and new startup ventures, the HUSTLE Entrepreneurship Conference, taking place on October 9 at Creighton University’s Heider College of Business, has a mission to engage, promote, and grow the local and regional entrepreneurship community in Nebraska and the Midwest.

In this series, we ask event sponsors about the conference and why they chose to sponsor it.

Visit hustleconference.com for more information and to register.

Q. What motivated your organization to sponsor this inaugural entrepreneur conference?

A. Every company – large and small – starts in the “idea phase.” At the Greater Omaha Chamber, it is our job to make sure that these ideas have an environment in which they can turn into a reality and then succeed.

By sponsoring this event, we are telling our entrepreneur community that we support and believe in them. We know it is not easy being an entrepreneur, but this conference will show that you are not alone in this community and there are resources available to hopefully make your life easier.

Q. What specific benefits or outcomes does your organization hope to achieve through this sponsorship?

A. First and foremost, we are looking for future success. We hope that every entrepreneur who walks through these doors will gain something that they can take back to the shop and get closer to that breakthrough moment. We hope to connect entrepreneurs to assistance and programming, as well as facilitate possible funding pipelines for startup companies. Nebraska is known as an innovation hub. We want to seize this momentum and take us to the next level. Each idea here has a chance to be the “next big thing,” and we cannot wait to see what this conference has in store.

Q. Which aspects of the conference align most closely with your organization’s values and mission?

A. At the Greater Omaha Chamber, we live our mission statement — “To champion a thriving business community and a prosperous region through visionary leadership and collaboration.”

We are told the HUSTLE Conference is for people who don’t sit still. This aligns perfectly with our vision for the Greater Omaha region. A thriving business community is one that is always moving forward, always innovating, and always taking chances. In order to prosper, we have a constant need for startup companies that become the future leaders of our region. At this conference, we are able to pitch our vision for Greater Omaha and collaborate with these new members of our business community. At the Greater Omaha Chamber, we love people who HUSTLE.

Q. How does your organization plan to leverage its sponsorship to engage with attendees and maximize its impact?

A. By sponsoring this event, we are investing in our entrepreneurs. However, our involvement does not stop there. Our Chamber staff will be at this event looking for connections, ideas, and most of all — leaders. Gathering this much talent in one event is no simple task, but it is key. It is crucial for us to be meeting with the people who are on the front line of innovation in our area. By getting to meet the future leaders of our region as they begin their journeys, we are able to best provide the support they need along the way. We have a vested interest in seeing these startups succeed — and to keep them in Nebraska. At the HUSTLE Conference, we will be able to pitch why that is good for business.

Not Only is This Normal –It’s Healthy

Stocks have stumbled recently, and that’s ok. This is why the asset class has offered the highest long-term returns for over a century compared to bonds, gold, commodities, etc. They’re more volatile, and not everyone can stomach the ride. This is the reason we spend most of our time educating clients about what matters, and more importantly, what doesn’t. History shows that the most important thing is sticking to your financial plan and remain invested. This is easier to do in some periods than others. However, understand that without such volatility, future stock returns would likely be reduced. Just like exercise, pullbacks are uncomfortable but healthy.

For us, there is nothing unusual about this ramp in volatility. Perhaps coincidence, but it’s a common phenomenon this time of year. We’ve yet to hear a great explanation, but September hasn’t been a great month for stocks over time. In fact, September has been a down month for four years in a row and has declined 56% of the time since 1928.

We encourage investors to keep perspective. The S&P 500 is still within striking distance of all-time highs. It’s on track for two consecutive years of double-digit gains. Since the October 2022 lows, the S%P 500 has climbed nearly 60%. It’s up 35% from October 2023. Corporate sales and earnings growth continue to rebound, although not evenly across all firms and sectors. While stocks benefiting from artificial intelligence have also pulled back, we see continued fundamental strength for multiple years. The Fed’s next move is likely a rate cut. While the job market is cooling/normalizing, so is inflation. Despite this fit of volatility, things look good in equity land. It’s part of the package.

BHEC launches East Site at University of Nebraska Omaha

The Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska recently launched a fourth site at the University of Nebraska Omaha’s Grace Abbott School of Social Work.

BHECN was established in 2009 at UNMC to develop behavioral health workforce. Additional sites are located at University Nebraska Kearny and Chadron State College.

“As our state’s largest urban area, Omaha and its surrounding communities have unique behavioral health workforce needs that require considerable focus and effort to address,” said Director Marley Doyle in a press release.

The new location aims to increase the representation of underserved populations in Omaha by partnering with community organizations such as Omaha Public School District. Officially opened in July, an opening event is scheduled for Nov. 1.

WM Breaks Ground on Renewable Natural Gas Facility

A renewable natural gas facility is underway in Bennington, Nebraska. Expected to be complete in late 2025, the facility will be located at the WM Pheasant Point Landfill. The renewable natural gas (RNG) facility will capture and process the gas emitted from the landfill and put it into a natural gas pipeline. It is expected to avoid more than 50,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year.

“Pheasant Point has been a renewable energy player for over 20 years — collecting landfill gas and converting it into electricity for our communities,” said Douglas County Board Chairman Roger Garcia in a press release.

WM has planned to invest more than $1.4 billion in renewable energy from 2022 to 2026.

Nebraska Immigrant and Refugee ORGANIZATION

The marriage two years ago of a pair of likemissioned Nebraska nonprofits has now gone to another level.

The organization previously known as Immigrant Legal Center + Refugee Empowerment Center announced Tuesday that it has a new name. It will be called the Center for Immigrant & Refugee Advancement, or CIRA.

The name signifies a commitment to guiding and advancing the newcomers served by more than 100 full-time staff members that include multiple lawyers. Erik Omar, executive director, emphasized the word “advancement.”

“That really applies to everything we do for the immigrant/refugee community — help them advance their positions here in the community,” Omar said.

The 2022 merger happened after the refugee center’s executive director left and leadership at the immigrant center took on its management and operations. For more than 25 years, the entities individually had helped thousands of immigrants and refugees advance toward their goals.

The thought then was to keep both names as a placeholder, Omar said.

The new CIRA brand will be on full display Sept. 29 at the organization’s 10th annual Food Truck

World Tour fundraiser at 3 p.m. on the Metropolitan Community College campus at 32nd Street and Sorenson Parkway, he said. The event features vendors and cuisines from around the world.

Proceeds will go to support the agency’s legal representation of foreign-born clients, refugee services and

social work programs. All services are free to clients, the organization said.

CIRA operates in 10 different offices stretching from Scottsbluff, Nebraska, to Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Omar said the organization even engaged translators to make sure the CIRA acronym was not a misuse of any language.

“It was important to us to invest our time into forming a new name and brand that both represents the journeys of immigrants and refugees and also communicates the expertise and compassion of our more than 100 team members who ensure they are welcomed, settled and able to build a life of their choosing,” said CIRA board chair Mike McMeekin.
