Transforming Cardiac Care
CENTESE MODERNIZES POST-OPERATIVE RECOVERY
From its Omaha headquarters, Centese is transforming patient care with Thoraguard, an automated system for chest drainage after heart or lung surgery. Implications for its flagship product are even more wideranging than this statement or function suggests.
For co-founder and CEO Evan Luxon, the Centese story is about medical innovation and recognizing and nurturing regional potential.
“When I founded Centese, I was based in San Francisco, an obvious choice for a medtech startup. However, I made the decision to relocate the company to Nebraska, despite some skepticism about the suitability of building the company here,” Luxon recalled. “This move, which might have seemed unconventional to some, has proven to be an excellent choice for our growth.”
Nebraska, he said, has provided Centese with a supportive environment, access to talent and a cost-effective base for operations.
“Since our relocation, I’ve witnessed increasing activity in the medtech community, confirming my belief in the state’s potential,” Luxon said. “We have a combination of top-tier medical facilities, universities producing skilled graduates, and a business-friendly environment that’s conducive to innovation and growth.”
Before Centese served as a model for entrepreneurs and investors considering Nebraska as a location for medtech ventures, it was simply a medical device called “Accuryn.”
“Accuryn is a digital monitor that automatically measures urine output, which is a vital piece of information for critically ill patients,” Luxon explained. “An essential aspect of its development was ensuring that every milliliter of urine from the patient’s kidneys was collected and measured in real-time.”
According to Luxon, a lightbulb moment occurred when some early cardiac surgeon users observed how well the device managed drainage.
“They asked if we could apply similar technology to chest tubes, which are used to remove fluid from patients’ chests after surgery,” he said. “These tubes often become clogged, causing significant challenges for patients and clinicians.”
Although substantial work was involved in evaluating the opportunity and adapting the technology for this new application, the initial conversation sparked the idea and what ultimately led Luxon to found Centese and develop its signature Thoraguard system. In 2016, the National Science Foundation awarded Centese with a grant to develop the product.
“We began with rapid prototyping and iterative bench testing to refine Thoraguard’s core functionality,” he said. “This included not only developing device prototypes, but also creating bench models for performance evaluation.”
From there, the fledgling Centese advanced to animal studies, conducting experiments to stress-test Thoraguard in a more realistic setting.
“These studies confirmed that our prototypes performed as expected, giving us the confidence that our concept was worth pursuing,” Luxon said. “Throughout this process, we continued to refine and expand Thoraguard’s functionality.”
Based on feedback from surgical advisers, Thoraguard’s capabilities were enhanced beyond fluid drainage in cardiac surgery — to include air leak drainage and quantification in thoracic surgery.
“This iterative approach resulted in a final device that differed significantly from our initial NSF-funded concept,” Luxon noted.
Once comprehensive testing demonstrated its safety and effectiveness, FDA clearance was granted – a significant milestone that Luxon said was just the beginning of its path to commercialization.

“FDA clearance doesn’t demonstrate superiority over existing options,” he said. “So, to position ourselves for commercial success, we needed to generate compelling clinical evidence to drive adoption.”
Centese partnered with New York University, Stanford University, and other top surgical centers to showcase Thoraguard’s clinical value. These partnerships resulted in robust clinical data to start the commercial push at the end of 2023.
“Throughout this entire process, we required external funding, which we raised from various sources, including grants from the National Science Foundation and the State of Nebraska, as well as private capital from angel investors and venture capitalists,” he said.
Elevating the standard
Until Thoraguard, the “standard” chest drainage systems largely remained unchanged since the 1950s.
“These traditional systems consist of simple plastic boxes connected to wall suction, effectively tethering patients and limiting their mobility, which is crucial for rapid recovery,” Luxon said. “They also use literal water columns to regulate suction levels and provide a seal from the patient’s chest, a method considered antiquated by modern medical standards.”
Monitoring and measurement with traditional systems, he said, is also outdated.
“Clinicians must manually track fluid output by marking graduations on the side of the collection box, a process prone to error and inconsistency,” Luxon said. “Air leak assessment relies on visually monitoring bubbling in a chamber, a highly imprecise method lacking quantitative data.”
Lastly, to address the issue of clogging chest tubes, nurses have had to develop “manual workarounds.” For instance, stretching and squeezing the tubes to generate large negative pressure pulses.
“These techniques are not effective,” he said.
Thoraguard offers a modern and stark contrast to such outdated practices, according to Luxon.
“As a digital system with built-in suction, Thoraguard allows patients to be mobile, supporting faster recovery,” he explained. “It automatically and digitally measures fluid output and air leaks, while also providing trends over time, improving clinical decision-making.”
He also said the system automatically clears chest tubes of clogs at regular intervals, improving effectiveness and reducing the nursing burden.
“These improvements provide a reimagining of how post-operative chest drainage should function in the modern medical environment,” Luxon stated.
Surgeons have primarily reported that Thoraguard helps patients leave the hospital sooner, and experience less pain and fewer complications.
“For example, in cardiac surgery, there’s been a noted reduction in postoperative atrial fibrillation — AFib — a common complication that can extend hospital stays and increase health care costs,” he said. “Nursing staff … appreciate how Thoraguard automates the management of patients’ chest drains, allowing them to focus on other critical aspects of patient recovery.”
Overall, Luxon said feedback indicates Thoraguard is not “just” a technological advancement.
“But a tool making a real difference in patient care and clinical practice,” he said. “It’s gratifying to see our innovation translating into tangible benefits for both patients and health care providers.”
Luxon attributed the positive response largely to extensive collaboration with surgeons and other clinicians throughout the development process.
“This approach was embedded in our company’s DNA from the very beginning, including at our first surgical conference where we presented a literal black box prototype, soliciting surgeons’ thoughts on a hypothetical device that could provide more reliable chest drainage,” he said. “We have always taken clinician feedback seriously, remaining open to pivoting our design based on their input. This iterative process resulted in our final device being significantly different from the initial concept.”
Luxon emphasized how initially Thoraguard was conceived as an “addon” system, focused solely on helping to remove clogs from chest tubes and intended for use with chest drains for suction and measurement.
“However, consistent user feedback led Thoraguard to evolve into a comprehensive chest drainage system,” he said. “By involving clinicians at every stage, from concept to final design, we’ve been able to create a solution that truly addresses the real-world needs of both clinicians and patients.”
The number of patients who have benefited from Thoraguard exceeds 8,000.
“These achievements are meaningful to us primarily, because they enable us to help more patients,” he said.
At present, Centese is partnering with Columbia University on a larger study to further validate a more recent benefit/development: the potential impact on post-operative AFib.
Centese has hired its first sales reps and clinical specialists to train and onboard new accounts and is scaling marketing and manufacturing operations to support its projected sales growth in the short term.
“Looking to the long term, our primary goal is to establish Thoraguard as the standard of care for chest drainage,” Luxon stated. “On a more macro level, I’m deeply interested in using AI to enhance our products and business processes. While there’s a lot of current excitement in the field — potentially leading to some short-term hype — I believe its long-term impact is largely underestimated, and I’m committed to staying ahead of the curve as AI transforms our world, including medicine.” MIDLANDS

Future of Health Care TECH PLAYS BIG ROLE IN ACCESS TO CARE
JAIME BLAND
PRESIDENT & CEO, CYNCHEALTH NEBRASKA/ CYNCHEALTH IOWA
The health care industry is prioritizing productivity and patient care as advancements in technology are reshaping the delivery of care in the Heartland.
Artificial intelligence
AI is being integrated into organizations and industries across the world and it is already revolutionizing health care. Scott Raymond, vice president-chief information and innovation officer at Nebraska Medicine, noted that with AI’s predictive analytics, health care professionals can gain deeper insights into patient data and predict health trends and outcomes more accurately, which will ultimately help in proactive patient care and operational efficiencies.
“We are leveraging AI to enhance our operational efficiency by automating routine tasks and providing actionable insights from vast amounts of data for our knowledge workers … and also to streamline clinical documentation by using ambient note generation, allowing our clinicians to focus more on patient care rather than the computer and administrative tasks,” he explained.
Ryan Cameron, vice president of technology and innovation at Children’s Nebraska, said that his team is looking at AI more as augmented intelligence.
“AI provides tools to help our team continuously improve care for patients

and patient families,” he said. “The impacts we are seeing with AI are largely in automating administrative tasks, saving our team time and contributing to streamlining operations.”
Beyond AI
Health care organizations across Nebraska are actively embracing other technological advancements that have the potential to provide better and more detailed care for patients. For example, CHI Health is exploring robotic process automation (RPA), using bots to automate tasks like identifying patients due for screenings. It is also working to improve its electronic health records (EHR) system to enhance data sharing and improve communication. Telehealth continues to expand too — allowing health care professionals to provide dedicated care to those who live in rural areas or have other accessibility issues.
“These advancements are ultimately helping Nebraskans live healthier lives by providing them with better access to care, improving the quality of care they receive, and ensuring they are receiving the right care at the right time,”said Dr. Steven Leitch, vice president of clinical informatics for the Midwest region of Commonspirit Health.
Cameron noted that Children’s Nebraska is seeing positive patient outcomes by using virtual reality and it’s now a common resource used for pain management,

behavioral health and wellness, caregiver training, and patient education. The organization is also utilizing robotics and offers one of the most sophisticated and productive robotic-assisted pediatric surgery departments in the country.
“There’s no doubt, digital tools provide additional opportunities for patients and patient families to partner with caregivers on the best blend of in-person and on-demand remote care,” he said.
Jaime Bland, president and CEO of CyncHealth Nebraska Cynchealth Iowa said that her team is utilizing technology that can create a comprehensive and rich picture of health on a personalized platform.
“The evolution of advanced computing (not just AI) will influence how technology interacts with the clinician,” Bland said. “My hope is that it reduces the burden for providers, not contributes to even more clicks and scrolling for information. I see a future where data is much more organized and oriented to individualized care, accessible to more of the clinical providers and easily transformed into information and wisdom to guide care.”
Steve Goeser, president and CEO of the Methodist Health System noted that the team has added more technology to its already robust lung program, which allows to more accurately identify potential legions. It has also added interactive programming for patients in their Acute Care for Elders Unit, and advancements and new procedures in the robotic surgery program are being implemented, too.

The future
Technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace. Clinicians and health care executives are anticipating even more advancements in AI, particularly in areas of personalized medicine, predictive analytics, and the ability to accelerate the development of new drugs and therapies. Being able to tailor treatments to individual genetic profiles may also be on the horizon.
“Anytime our physicians can have access to more tools and technology, it results in better outcomes for our patients,” Goeser said. “Whether it’s identifying diseases more efficiently, instilling more confidence that our providers are identifying and removing all potential cancer, or providing access to lifesaving screenings that detect potential health issues before they escalate, it all results in our community being healthier.”
The bottom line: innovation in health care is changing lives for the better and it can only get better from here.

Reshaping Technology
OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND FOR INNOVATION
JERRY KOSKE

STRATEGY OFFICER, AVITURE INC.
The evolving nature of how humans connect in a natural and intuitive way to “machines” is at the heart of many innovations coming out of the Midlands, yet profoundly shaping organizations and industries near and far.
Timely technologies are also complementing activity in timeless industries like agriculture, contributing to a flurry of innovation to improve existing processes and upheave sectors entirely.
“This year, the startups that received the biggest investments have been B2B [software- as-a-service] products that improve efficiency,” said John Bunting, CEO and founder of Beeso Studio, which helps startups build technology, raise investment, run marketing and acquire customers. “In 2024, Beeso Studio launched three startups that improve efficiency.”
Customer Insight provides residential contractors with an efficient method of pre-qualifying homeowners via insights into their financial state, while My Part Pros and Ngage365 brings efficiency to auto dealership parts departments and to the process of nonprofits receiving donations via Apple Pay and Google Pay, respectively.
“The current economic climate is driving businesses to invest in increasing efficiency,” Bunting explained. “When a startup has a product that is bringing

efficiency to an existing process, getting customer validation is easier and the ROI is straightforward.
Virtual reality is among “technology to watch.”
“The challenge with VR is developers are trying to figure out the best use cases and there is no clear ‘killer app,’” Bunting said. “Currently VR is mostly used by innovators; however, in the next two to five years, VR might emerge as a viable technology platform.
In 2025 and 2026, the integration of artificial intelligence into existing products shows the most promise.
“The biggest upcoming game-changer will be Apple and Google adding AI to their smartphones,” he added. “By having AI natively run on a smartphone, it will make it more accessible for the public and expand the use cases. People will inherently discover new ways to use AI and the benefits of it.”
Reimagining products
Over the past year, AI-driven co-pilots have, partly, been integrated into Aviture’s engineering teams, according to Chief Strategy Officer Jerry Koske.
“This AI integration has revolutionized how we generate business

documents, code and test data, understand large bodies of information and quickly pivot presentations to different audiences,” he stated, noting significantly reduced response times for clients.
The business has ventured into “new territories” beyond AI with DevSecOps, a consulting service to deliver better software, faster.
“We’ve also explored digital twinning, creating virtual replicas of physical devices for improved simulation and maintenance,” he said.
For instance, its digital arcade version of “Perfection” (“Production”) has been spotlighted at tradeshows to demonstrate Aviture’s culture of innovation.
Koske also noted how AI tools are kickstarting Aviture’s creative processes and considerably reducing the time to digest and understand large amounts of data. In software development, AI has assisted with everything from debugging issues to generating test data that mimics real data in a fraction of the time as earlier-generation tools — advancements that translate to higherquality solutions, more comprehensive documentation, and faster, more costeffective delivery for clients.
For Aviture, Koske said it is able to focus more on innovation and less on routine tasks. Its expanded capacity on DevSecOps was described as “particularly beneficial.”
“By integrating security practices throughout the development lifecycle, we’re helping our clients create more secure, resilient applications,” he said, referencing reduced risk, improved compliance and faster time-to-market for products.
Digital twinning resonates among clients with hardware components in their systems.
“By creating virtual replicas of physical devices, we’re able to simulate real-world conditions, predict potential issues and optimize performance without the need for physical prototypes,” Koske explained.
Innovations coming out of its client organizations are securing more than “incremental improvements.” He said they’re reimagining operations.
“The common thread we see is clear: the intelligent application of AI, automation and DevSecOps is driving transformative change across industries,” he said.
Such “profound” transformations span more natural human-machine interactions and accessible technology for users who are not highly technically sophisticated.
“This democratization of technology is opening up new possibilities for innovation across various sectors,” Koske stated.
Interactive dialogues with information are moving beyond “static reports” for data-intensive finance, health care, logistics, and other industries that lean into real-time insights to drive decision-making. He’s also seeing clients leverage AI and automation to develop new products that would have been impossible a few years ago at a previously unheard-of pace.
“Ultimately, these innovations are not just improving existing processes — they’re reshaping entire industries,” he said. “By reducing barriers to entry, speeding up innovation cycles, and enabling more data-driven decisionmaking, they’re creating more dynamic, responsive and competitive business environments across the board.”
Championing innovation
Launched last fall in partnership with the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Tech Nebraska is the state’s first membership-based technology trade association.
“We’re working to convene technology partners across the state and to foster a more diverse and inclusive technology workforce,” said Executive
Director Laurel Oetken.
Additionally, it is influencing legislation to create a positive environment for business growth. She mentioned that there are still not enough entrepreneurs willing to start up, and access to tech talent remains a challenge.
“We’re seeing that innovation is happening in areas that seem to be working to further connect the state and enhance some of the things ‘Nebraska’ and that Nebraskans are historically good at,” Oetken said. “Because of Nebraska’s unique geography, there’s a huge opportunity to look at sectors or industries like supply chain logistics to make things easier for people in the western part of the state to access the same resources as we have access to in the eastern part of the state.”
Similarly, as an “ag-heavy state,” Oetken said many of their strongest innovators and innovations are coming out of the industry or have a connection to it.
“There seems to be a connected passion for feeding the world, doing more with less, and being good stewards of our environment and natural resources,” she said. “We’re excited to continue seeing growth in the sectors Nebraska is particularly strong within but, of course, we’re always keeping an eye on emerging technology sectors, too, to best support growth in all areas of tech in Nebraska.”

The Greater Omaha Chamber program has been in existence since 1993 and has highlighted inductees at a gala. This year’s event took place Aug. 21, 2024 at Holland Performing Arts Center.
CLARENCE L. “C.L.” LANDEN, III
CEO, SECURITY NATIONAL BANK
JAMES E.
“JIM”
LANDEN, SR. EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN, SECURITY NATIONAL BANK
CLARENCE L. “MICKEY” LANDEN, JR.
Q. What does your induction into the Omaha Business Hall of Fame mean to you?
C.L.: It’s truly an honor to be recognized for the hard work and dedication that Mickey, Jim, and I, along with our incredible team, have put into building a strong bank and a successful business in Omaha. This recognition goes beyond just our efforts; it’s a reflection of the entire community and the support we’ve received. Hearing from fellow business leaders who have reached out to congratulate us has been particularly meaningful.
Jim: Being honored by the chamber in this way is especially significant for us, as it continues the legacy of our grandfather, Clarence Landen, Sr., who was also recognized by the Business Hall of Fame. It’s a humbling experience to be acknowledged alongside him and our father, and to continue making an impact in the community.
Q: What does the future of your industry look like?
C.L.: The pace of technology is accelerating, and it’s transforming the way businesses and individuals manage their finances. At Security National Bank, we’re adapting to this evolution by offering much more than traditional banking services. We provide comprehensive wealth management solutions, including investment services and estate planning. I believe clients will continue to value these one-stop financial services as they seek more efficient, integrated solutions for their financial well-being.”
Jim: Community banking will always be at the core of what we do, both now and in the future. Our focus is on supporting local industries and businesses, helping them thrive and grow, which in turn strengthens our community. Being based in Omaha is a huge advantage, as the local economy is steady and resilient. That stability allows us to continue building strong, lasting relationships with our clients and contribute to the long-term success of the region.
Q. What career accomplishments are you most proud of?
C.L.: One of the proudest moments in my career was when the bank crossed $1 billion in assets in 2020. Given where we started, it was a significant milestone that demonstrated how far we’ve come. Today, we’ve surpassed $1.6 billion in assets, which is a testament to the trust and confidence our clients place in us. That growth reflects the strength of our relationships and our commitment to providing exceptional financial services.
Jim: I would also add that one of the accomplishments I’m most proud of is the
dedication and longevity that C.L. and I, along with our team, have brought to the bank. C.L. and I have been working here for a long time, and we’ve followed in the footsteps of our dad, who spent most of his life at the bank. It’s a legacy of commitment, and many of our team members share that same dedication. We’re fortunate to have a lot of long-term employees who have grown with us and contributed to the success of the organization.
Q. What is your leadership style?
C.L.: One of the things I love most is the incredible talent we’re bringing into the bank. Our new teammates bring such a variety of skills, and it’s exciting to give them the freedom to innovate and excel in their areas of expertise. Empowering people to take ownership of their roles and contribute in meaningful ways really drives our success.”
Jim: I’d also say that leading by example is key to our approach. We focus on creating a positive and respectful environment, but we also maintain clear standards and expectations. Striking that balance between being approachable and holding people accountable helps build a strong, high-performing team.
Q. What do you love most about the Omaha business community?
Jim: What stands out to me is the entrepreneurial spirit that thrives in Omaha. We have a dynamic business environment, filled with innovative thinkers and some truly great companies that call this city home. It’s an exciting place to be for business leaders.
C.L.: I really appreciate the collaborative nature of the Omaha business community. There’s a genuine desire among business leaders to work together to improve the community as a whole. That shared commitment to making Omaha a better place for everyone is something I truly value.”
Q. What’s the best advice you’ve received?
Jim: Early in my career as a young banker, I received some great advice from Lyle Haugen, who was our president at the time and remains our longest-serving employee today. He told me to lead by example and to always be available for people. That advice has stuck with me, and it’s something I try to embody every day as a leader.”
C.L.: One of the best pieces of advice I got was from our dad, Mickey. He always used to say, ‘The speed of the boss is the speed of the company.’ That mentality has shaped how we operate today. We prioritize making fast, local decisions for our clients because we know how important responsiveness is to their success.
Q. What habit do you have that has helped you in your career?
C.L.: One habit that has really helped me is making it a point to call people back the same day. It’s a small thing, but it shows that I’m responsive and value their time. Keeping that line of communication open is crucial for building trust with clients and colleagues.
Jim: For me, being available is key — something as simple as answering your phone can make a big difference. I also keep a regular to-do list, which has been a habit in our family. It helps me stay organized and focused, ensuring that I stay on top of priorities and follow through on commitments.
Q. Who or what inspires you?
Jim: I’ve always been inspired by our parents, who set such a strong example for us. Today, my wife, Diny, our kids, and even our teammates inspire me on a daily basis. I also find a lot of inspiration in our clients, especially when I see them achieving great things. Watching their success motivates me to keep pushing forward.
C.L.: Of course, my family inspires me. We’re very close. At work, for me, it’s the team at our company. It’s incredibly rewarding to watch people thrive in their roles and see how well they perform. That sense of accomplishment within the team is really inspiring.
Jim: I’d also add that whether it’s a good or challenging time, seeing the
dedication of our team as they face and overcome obstacles is always inspiring. Their commitment to meeting and exceeding challenges keeps me motivated.
Q. How do you tackle challenges?
C.L.: I like to approach challenges by seeing them as opportunities. Every challenge presents a chance to learn, grow, and ultimately improve, both personally and professionally. It’s all about having a positive mindset and turning obstacles into steppingstones.
Jim: I believe it’s important to learn from mistakes, and the key is to take that lesson and use it to grow. Challenges are inevitable, but if you can learn from them and adapt, they can become powerful tools for improvement.”
Q. What is your favorite way to decompress after a long workweek?
C.L.: My favorite way to decompress after a busy workweek is by spending quality time with my family and friends. Whether we’re enjoying a meal, having a meaningful conversation, or just relaxing together, the time spent with loved ones helps me unwind and recharge for the week ahead.
Jim: Like C.L., I also find that time with family and friends is the best way to relax after a long workweek. One of my favorite ways to do this is by playing golf with them. It gives us a chance to enjoy the outdoors while spending time together.
SID MERIDITH FOUNDER, OWNER, & CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD, SECURITY EQUIPMENT, INC. (SEI)
Q: What does your induction into the Greater Omaha Chamber Business Hall of Fame mean to you?
It was truly the pinnacle of my business career.
To be recognized by the Omaha Chamber of Commerce and the people involved; it’s definitely an honor for me.
Q: What does the future of your industry look like?
The future of our industry is very good, and in fact, it’s outstanding. Sometimes for all the wrong reasons, because it’s related to crime. We provide many services, but they are all related to the security industry. The Wall Street Journal, at one point, published that security is one of the 10 fastest-growing industries in the United States.
Q: Of what career accomplishments are you most proud?
I am proud of two careers. One, my military career; I served right out of college when they were implementing the draft. My draft status was 1A, with a very low number; I was going to be drafted very soon. I took a couple of job interviews, they both ended with, “Mr. Meridith, we would like to talk with you more, right after you complete your military obligation.”
So with that, I entered the Navy Officers’ Program. I was commissioned, and served, seven years as a Naval officer. I am very proud of that portion of my working life. My next career, and last, has been my more than 55 years with the company I founded, SEi. I am very proud of its growth and the staff we have. Our team is focused on customer service, and that has certainly assisted in our growth.
Q: What is your leadership style?
It somewhat follows the leadership that I learned in the military. There are organization, structure, and discipline. Those three qualities, are very much part of the military and are required of an entrepreneur who intends to grow a business.
Q: What do you love most about the Omaha business community?
The Omaha business community is a very fair business community. I’ve learned
to trust many of them. The Omaha business community was extremely helpful to me in my early years when I started my business. Omaha has been good to me, my family, and SEi. Thank you Omaha!
Q: What is the best advice you have received?
You have to treat and grow a company one customer at a time; that customer satisfaction is the basis on which you are going to get the next customer and many to follow.
Q: What habit do you have that has helped you in your career?
I am not sure this is a habit, but I think every one of our customers expects to be treated fairly, honestly, and with respect. Once we do business with a customer, we want to continue the business relationship with the customer forever. We are a personalized and recurring type of business where we continue to provide services month after month — year after year — and decade after decade. We do not want to lose any customers while we build and add new customers.
Q: Who or what inspires you?
I was inspired by my parents, they were entrepreneurs. My grandfather was an entrepreneur. I had the opportunity to watch my parents start a business and experience its growth while becoming part of it. Being an only child, you get involved very quickly, and don’t look to brothers and sisters for assistance. I gained a lot of responsibility as a result.
Q: How do you tackle challenges?
When you are presented with challenges, you first have to analyze the challenge as to the extent of it, what it demands, and what is it going to take to satisfy that challenge? You must take on every challenge, in some way. You cannot ignore a challenge and you have to have the mindset that you will be successful.
Q: What is your favorite way to decompress after a long work week?
I really enjoy watching sporting events. I love to be with people, and fortunately, I have some very fine friends. We enjoy spending time together. My wife and I are very active in various programs. We love each other and we work together to enhance each other’s lives.
2024 Business Hall of Fame A Q&A WITH TOP OMAHA VISIONARIES
LANCE FRITZ
RETIRED CHAIRMAN, PRESIDENT & CEO, UNION PACIFIC
Q: What does your induction into the Omaha Business Hall of Fame mean to you?
It is a humbling honor given the previous inductees and the class with whom I was inducted. I am joining many great Omaha business leaders who have made a lasting, positive impact on our great city. Being included means the chamber and selection committee thinks I have had a positive impact on Omaha, as well, which is pretty cool.
Q: What does the future of your industry look like?
The future of freight railroading in North America is all about generating growth. The industry has done a great job of finding and implementing efficiencies; the service product is reliable and has continued to improve; and the product offerings meet the customer where they are and leverage the latest technology. The next step is to reward stakeholders with the benefits of growth, putting more on freight railroads and less on public highways — helping communities become more economically viable, safer, and
industries be more competitive globally.
Q: What career accomplishments are you most proud of?
I am most proud of the team that I assembled at Union Pacific, how we transformed our operating model successfully, the service we provide our customers to help them win in their markets, how we leveraged technology to lead the industry and be more for our customers, and our safety culture. The company is in great shape to face the next set of challenges and to take advantage of the next set of opportunities. That is the fundamental job of the CEO, and I left UP in great shape.
Q: What is your leadership style?
I am goal-oriented, collegial, direct, and empathetic. I try to put the right people in jobs where they will thrive and give them room to run — I do not make decisions for my team if the decisions are theirs to make. I set goals that are stretched but achievable and check in regularly without too much oversight. I am very competitive and want to win as a team. I love working together, and I love being accountable.
Q: What do you love most about the Omaha business community?
Our business community is full of leaders who are quick to help each other, and who are quick to help the community. It is uncommon for a community of our size to have the philanthropic engagement of its CEOs like we have in Omaha. Through working together on community efforts our business leaders form strong friendships and bonds that last a lifetime. Julie and I could live anywhere after retirement, and we are keeping our home in Omaha.
Q: What’s the best advice you’ve received?
Three things: first, never assume — triangulate the data/information to verify where the truth lies. Second, value each employee as they would like to be valued, then follow through. Third, trust is the glue and grease of the team, build trust with your team above all else.
Q: What habit do you have that has helped you in your career?
I make decisions when it is time, I only make the decisions that are mine to make, and do not revisit them unless necessary.
Q: Who or what inspires you?
I was inspired every day at Union Pacific by our employees doing the work for our customers. They loved their jobs, their teammates, and their customers, and were exceptional at their jobs. Being in the field, visiting with our teams, was always a huge emotional boost.
Q: How do you tackle challenges?
First, I enroll a team that can help. Second, we look at the hard truths — no flinching from reality. Third, we tackle the issues with a plan and disciplined execution. One step at a time, breaking down the big and scary stuff into smaller, manageable steps.
Q: What is your favorite way to decompress after a long workweek?
Walking our dog Ginger with my wife Julie, playing golf, working out, or watching football (preferably the Huskers or Packers).
JOAN SQUIRES
PRESIDENT, OMAHA PERFORMING ARTS
Q: What does your induction into the Omaha Business Hall of Fame mean to you?
I am incredibly honored to have been inducted into the Omaha Business Hall of Fame, especially to be included with my fellow inductees. Because O-pa’s mission is focused on the arts, I think that sometimes our economic impact and scope aren’t fully understood, so this recognition is very meaningful.
Q: What does the future of your industry look like?
I’m excited about what lies ahead for our industry. People want to gather together, and our growing ticket sales have demonstrated that. It’s wonderful to be in a business that brings everyone together and to be able to connect to the community.
Q: What career accomplishments are you most proud of?
I’m proud to have started this organization and to now see what a difference we make. I know that O-pa has changed the community and impacted lives through the experiences we offer at our venues, our performances, and our education and engagement activities. Much of this didn’t exist before O-pa, and it’s gratifying to see people enjoying a show or students participating in a meaningful education or engagement program.
Q: What is your leadership style?
I’d say I set a fast pace and a high bar for our team. We strive to do our best work in everything, and to always be open to change. I have two rules when you work here: “no surprises” and “fess up and fix it.” There will always be mistakes — it’s letting others know about it and what you’re doing to fix it!
CONSTANCE RYAN CEO, STRECK
Q: What does your induction into the Omaha Business Hall of Fame mean to you?
It is a recognition of Streck and myself for the contributions made to our community.

Q: What career accomplishments are you most proud of?
Continuing to grow Streck and assure that it will be here for another 50 years making great products and delivering a high quality to our customers.

Q: What do you love most about the Omaha business community?
I have partnered with a variety of companies and people to make our business a better

The continuous commitment to growing and improving our community – not just as a great place for doing business and attracting new business, but the commitment to continual improvement in education, healthcare, housing, transportation, quality of life, and more.
Q: What habit do you have that has helped you in your career?
I am a runner and it’s a great way to clear your head and have time to think about new ideas or challenges and possible solutions.
Q: Who or what inspires you?
Getting to see the impact of our mission inspires me. We’ve enabled high school students participating in our Nebraska Theater Academy to build careers on Broadway; I’ve seen young dancers engaging in workshops with dancers from Alvin Ailey; I’ve watched a packed crowd at Steelhouse Omaha rocking to a favorite band, and I’ve observed families enjoying music at Miller Park. I know these and so many other opportunities didn’t exist before O-pa, and it’s why I get up every day.
Q: How do you tackle challenges?
Sometimes I have to sketch out a chart or diagram to organize and summarize information. Then I bring that information to our leadership team for a discussion about possibilities.
Q: What is your favorite way to decompress after a long workweek?
I’m not sure how to answer — we present concerts and shows at night and on weekends, so there is not really a time to decompress unless you’re out of town on vacation! When I can disconnect — it’s spending time with my new husband!
business. I have received immense support from my friends and employees during tough times. We have always grown past our challenges and every time it is Omaha that has been there.
Q: What’s the best advice you’ve received?
Do your best! Commit 100%! Know you can’t really change anyone, they have to believe in you and the mission.

Head on! I’m not afraid to take risks and look for solutions that are outside the box.
Q: What is your favorite way to decompress after a long workweek?
The gym, time with friends, reading great stories, or watching great movies about those who have accomplished their goals no matter what was thrown in their paths.

Flood Communications
BREAKING THE MOLD WITH LOCAL TELEMUNDO AFFILIATE

Identifying a niche and going all in, Flood Communications, the Nebraska-based media company that owns 26 radio and TV stations across the state, has scaled its Spanish language content with Radio Lobo and Telemundo Nebraska.
The media company, which reaches a largely rural audience, took the initiative to bring hyper-local content to both Hispanic and rural communities.
“You would think those aren’t related at all, but they’re incredibly related because the two most underserved audiences in Nebraska are the greater Nebraska rural audience and the Hispanic audience,” said Andy Ruback, CEO.
When looking into expanding these platforms, Ruback said the organization developed a philosophy of going beyond entertainment and incorporated multimedia journalism into its platforms. Through News Channel Nebraska, the company creates content for television both in Spanish and English.
With 200 employees in 11 offices across Nebraska, Flood Communications also runs a digital advertising agency to meet the needs of smaller communities.
“We were finding a lot of our clients needed to mature in some of their marketing strategies, but they couldn’t afford a traditional ad agency,” Ruback said.
Groundbreaking strategy
You may be familiar with Telemundo as a cable channel, not necessarily as a local news station.
“A Telemundo local affiliate didn’t exist until we came around,” he said. “I think what attracted us to that was the opportunity to grow a really unique business to an underserved audience.”
Ruback likened Telemundo Nebraska to building a startup within an existing business. The company had the infrastructure to grow its reach and has taken its platform seriously.
“When OPPD is trying to let people know about power outages, we participate in that whole process, doing the right thing for the community,” he said.
When asked how it keeps its content relevant, Ruback said its staff is part of its target audience, many of which are Nebraska natives and have gone to journalism schools in the area.
“When you’re in the community, it’s not that hard to stay relevant, because you’re part of that community,” he said.
Expansion on the horizon
Ruback said the company has its sights set on expanding its reach in Sioux City, Iowa, among other parts of Iowa. Content-wise, he’s hopeful to incorporate more live sporting events.
“We do state basketball and state track, and we’re the ones that did the Supernovas volleyball games on TV,” he said.
He attributes growth so far to serving the community in unique ways.
“We’re doing things a little bit differently and building out some expertise and scaling for underserved audiences, and it’s really benefiting those communities, and our advertising partners,” he said.

INDUSTRY: INVESTMENT BANKING
ACG MEMBER SINCE: 1998
Q. Tell us about your business.
A. Corporate Finance Associates Worldwide is a boutique investment banking firm focused on mergers and acquisitions advisory. We represent sellers and buyers of what we call lower middle market businesses. The vast majority of the transactions we’re involved in are entrepreneurial-led businesses. That’s been a focus of our firm since its founding.
Q. Can you share some of the key growth drivers that your company is currently focusing on, and how do you prioritize them in your overall strategy?
A. It’s been focused on three things: More work with buyers. We have several international, European-based clients who are buyers looking to expand their presence in North America, and we are serving as their outsourced M&A office. Third would be a focus on our expertise in several industries, which include healthcare, plastics and metal fabrication and distribution.
Q. In today’s rapidly changing business landscape, how does your company stay ahead of the curve and identify emerging trends that could impact your growth trajectory?
A. As far as our growth trajectory, we do a lot of research. The very nature of our business is heavy on the research side, especially when we’re representing buyers because we’re learning a lot about the industry in which they play and act in. Because we operate across multiple industries, it gives us a pretty good indicator of which industries are strong, which are weak, which are growth areas, which are areas where business is more challenging. That gives us great insight into leading indicators and lagging indicators.
Q. Can you share a specific example of a recent growth initiative that your company has implemented, and what lessons have you learned from its successes or challenges?
A. We have been very actively involved in building our cross-border practice. Some of the lessons that we’ve learned are homing in on the right-sized companies who can utilize our services there. There are some that are too big, that just don’t need us, and there are some that are too small. We are also focusing on the clients who will value our services and our counsel and guidance. Those have been the biggest lessons we’ve learned.
PARTNER content
Q. How does your company balance short-term financial performance with long-term growth objectives, and what role does sustainability play in your growth strategy?
A. Investment banks are based on performance fees and success fees. One of the benefits of our buy-side work is it provides an ongoing revenue stream to us that helps fill the gap of the feast or famine of transaction-based fees. The way we balance our long-term growth is by looking at alternative revenue streams so that we’re not always waiting for transaction closings.
Q. What advice would you give to other business leaders who are looking to accelerate their growth, particularly in the current economic climate?
A. We see the biggest mistakes made by businesses in difficult economic times. They reduce their sales or marketing budgets, and that’s the exact opposite reaction of what they should be doing. Challenging economic times are when they should be selling and marketing the heaviest. The advice we always give to clients is: Don’t let your foot off the gas. Keep pushing.
Hustle Conference Q&A
JEANA
GOOSMANN,
FOUNDER, CEO, AND MANAGING PARTNER, GOOSMANN LAW FIRM
Meant for both established small businesses and new startup ventures, the HUSTLE Entrepreneurship Conference, taking place on October 9 at Creighton University’s Heider College of Business, has a mission to engage, promote, and grow the local and regional entrepreneurship community in Nebraska and the Midwest.
In this series, we ask event sponsors about the conference and why they chose to sponsor it.
Visit hustleconference.com for more information and to register.
Q. What motivated your company to sponsor this inaugural entrepreneur conference?
A. I grew up as the fifth kid in a family with entrepreneurship engrained in their DNA, which is a big part of why I founded the Goosmann Law Firm in 2009. At Goosmann, we’re passionate about supporting entrepreneurs and business leaders. We understand the challenges entrepreneurs face and we’re dedicated to helping them protect their assets and do big deals to help grow their companies. Supporting The Hustle Conference is a great opportunity to invest in the future of Nebraska and Midwest entrepreneurship, and we’re excited to be part of it!
Q. What specific benefits or outcomes does your company hope to achieve through this sponsorship?
A. When I set out to start the Goosmann Law Firm, there were many hurdles I had to overcome, especially as a young female professional in a traditionally male-dominated industry. I was fortunate to have the support of many great mentors who encouraged and guided me along the way. Now, 15 years later, the Goosmann Law Firm is certified as the largest woman-owned law firm in the Midwest that provides legal advice to businesses at every stage, from startup to succession planning. As a firm that fundamentally believes in fostering a giving culture, sponsoring The Hustle Conference is a wonderful opportunity to share our cumulative knowledge and give back to entrepreneurs right here in the community we serve.
Q. Which aspects of the conference align most closely with your company’s values and mission?
A. The Hustle Conference’s focus on innovation, growth, and entrepreneurship closely aligns with our mission of empowering business leaders to succeed. We believe in providing strategic, proactive legal guidance to help businesses protect their assets and navigate challenges. The conference’s commitment to education, collaboration, and community mirrors our values of leadership, service, and growth.
JEANA GOOSMANN, FOUNDER, CEO, AND MANAGING PARTNER, GOOSMANN LAW FIRM
Q. How does your company plan to leverage its sponsorship to engage with attendees and maximize its impact?
A. We’ve put the full force of our marketing efforts behind spreading the word about this inaugural event. The Hustle Conference offers a venue for business owners and entrepreneurs to connect, share their insights, and learn from each other. I’ll be delivering a session on “Top 10 Tips for Business Owners: Protect Your Assets and Avoid Common Mistakes.” We’re also excited to connect with attendees during networking sessions and build lasting relationships that contribute to the success of entrepreneurs across the region.
Q. What opportunities do you see for future collaboration and support of the entrepreneurial community beyond this conference?
A. Seeking advice from credible professionals who can serve as mentors is one of the best decisions an entrepreneur can make. The Hustle Conference offers business owners a place to connect, collaborate, and inspire success. This event holds so much potential to help our entrepreneurial community actively engage and grow. As we say here at Goosmann Law Firm, when we work together, we win together!

How to Fund Your New Franchise Business
It’s no secret that many more people than you might think harbor thoughts of owning a business of their own. The advantages of taking charge of your own destiny, not to mention earning potential, is often too good to pass up. Yet one of the leading factors preventing many entrepreneurial-minded candidates from pursuing the best franchise opportunity is one simple concern – how will I pay for it?
If you’re wondering the same, I’ve got great news. Once you locate the right franchise opportunity, there are plenty of options to secure funding.
Before you begin, you must get your own financial house in order. Get an accurate read on your credit history and score and calculate your net worth (subtract liabilities from assets). This will give you a range to pursue your optimal franchise opportunity. Here are the most common ways to fund:
Conventional Loans – you can apply with your personal lending institution, but be prepared to present a rudimentary business plan
SBA Loans – among the most popular avenues, thanks to two franchise-related programs - Type 7(a) loans for new franchise owners and Type 504 loans, which offers more flexibility, but have certain limitations
Franchisors – many franchisors offer franchisee funding, or have third-party sources who can help finance
If these funding avenues aren’t workable, you still have alternatives. I’m seeing more and more candidates who are self-funding - using a combination of equity from assets (home or property), securities-backed portfolio lines of credit, non-bank sourced personal loans (requires no collateralization), or the 401K rollover option in which you can draw capital from your retirement accounts both tax and penalty-free.
Keep in mind, businesses do come in all price ranges and there are plenty of low-cost franchise opportunities in the marketplace today.

THE FRANCHISEE:
Q&A:
Q: Why did you choose this industry?
A: Recession resistant and something that is always needed and so impactful.
Q: Why did you choose this franchise?
A: Primarily the amount of support given to franchisees, pace of growth, and love for the overall franchise.
Q: What was the process of starting your franchise?
A: Lots of exploring! Tons of research was done, phone calls with other franchisees and franchisors and finally went to visit the franchisor for a discovery day, which sold us. From there we started looking for real estate which took a while along with construction. During that time we had frequent calls with the franchise support team and they guided us on what we needed to do/when.
Q: What challenges have you faced?
A: Hiring is really hard in the education industry in general and when you only offer part-time in the beginning it makes it even harder.
Q: What have been your biggest wins?
A: Having found the best staff and watching the growth of our school. Seeing kids come in and truly love coming to our school makes this all worth it.
Q: How have you grown?
A: Being a business owner is hard. There have been challenges we’ve faced that we never could have imagined. The best thing has been having a strong support system to lean on and through these challenges, I’ve learned and grown.
Q: What does the future hold?
A: Two more locations! We hope to continue growing in the Omaha community and own the rights to the Omaha market for Ivybrook. We want to first continue establishing our first school, but eventually hope to grow and offer our school in other parts of Omaha. Industry: Education | Year franchise opened: 2024 | Number of employees: 5 Owner: Aly Ball & Ryan Campbell | Address: 8311 S 167th Plaza, Omaha, Nebraska, 68136 Phone: 402-242-6888 | Franchise Fee: $100,000

Appreciate the Scale of the Digital Economy
Value investing isn’t dead – it just changed. However, there are many investors that are still stupefied that just buying tried and true companies at low valuations no longer produces the same results that it once did. Instead of recognizing what’s changed, these investors proclaim that the markets are “broken”, valuation doesn’t matter, or blame the Fed’s low interest rate policy over the past 15 years for juicing growth stocks. None of these excuses hold water, especially the latter now that rates are higher and “value” stocks are still struggling.
We believe that a big part of the answer is the tremendous scale of the digital economy. Instead of a leading company having tens of millions of customers, the leaders of today’s digital economy have billions of users worldwide. These platforms might have started off in a particular service or sector, such as selling books online, providing internet searches, or mailing DVDs. However, now they have such massive scale and customer loyalty that they can disrupt and compete in nearly any sector they please.
Digital Economy Customers
Traditional Economy Customers
Source: company reports
Consider today’s situation. Apple is not just selling phones. It’s starting to branch into financial services and movies. Amazon isn’t just the world’s largest e-commerce site. It also built one of the world’s largest transportation networks and is moving into healthcare services. Alphabet has its hands in many different lines of business ranging from autonomous driving, e-commerce, payments, and medical devices. These firms are not contained to just one sector – they are omnipresent. Their massive scale allows them to capture incremental profits by doing previously outsourced services themselves and expanding into new parts of the world’s economy and our lives.
Our world is undergoing meaningful change and disruption. Investors shouldn’t view the world with the same lens that they did 20 years ago. Spotting low P/E (price/earnings) ratios doesn’t produce the same results it once did. Not only does this myopic approach underestimate the long-term earnings power of these massive digital leaders, but it also fails to recognize that many players in the traditional economy are at risk.
As Stephen Hawking once said, “Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change”. The intelligent investor needs to do the same.

Nebraska Women in STEM, an organization focusing on professional development for women in science, technology, engineering and math careers, recently hosted a webinar on Sept. 17 on career advancement.
Kathleen Brandert with UNMC College of Public Health presented “Building Your Support Cast: Relationships for Career Success & Advancement.”
Brandert provided advice to women executives on how to create their own personal board of directors.
Here are five top takeaways from the virtual event:
1. Surround yourself with people that make you stronger. Rely on a diverse group of people you can reach out to for advice, feedback and insight.
2. You are the only one that cares about your career as much as you do. Always keep your best interest in mind.
3. Your personal board members can be anyone, anywhere. Don’t limit yourself to those in your close personal circle.
4. Give your loved ones a break. Find confidants in co-workers and your business network.
5. Pay it forward. Who else can you be a board member to?
Nebraska Women in STEM’s next event, the 2024 Celebrating Women STEM, takes place Oct. 17 at the Empire Room in Omaha. The luncheon will feature a panel discussion with women entrepreneurs. For more information visit nebraskawomeninstem.com

Unemployment Rates
JOHN ALBIN NEBRASKA LABOR COMMISSIONER, (COURTESY OF LABOR DEPARTMENT)
NEBRASKA
UP SLIGHTLY, U.S. RATE DECLINED A BIT
BY CINDY GONZALEZ, NEBRASKA EXAMINER ORIGINALLY
PUBLISHED ON NEBRASKAEXAMINER.COM ON SEPT. 20
LINCOLN — Nebraska’s unemployment rate went up slightly last month while the national unemployment rate went down slightly, according to preliminary and seasonally adjusted data released Sept. 20.
In Nebraska, the unemployment rate for August was 2.7%, up 0.1% from July’s 2.6%.
The national unemployment rate was 4.2%, down 0.1% from the July rate of 4.3%.
Nebraska is tied with Mississippi for having the 5th lowest unemployment rate in the country.
South Dakota has the lowest at 2.0%, followed by Vermont at 2.2%, North Dakota, 2.3% and New Hampshire, 2.6%.
“New entrants and re-entrants to the labor force (who are still looking for a job) were up over the month and are the drivers of the uptick in the unemployment rate,” said Labor Commissioner John Albin.
The numbers of employed and unemployed people in the labor force are based on a survey by the U.S. Census Bureau.
Individuals claiming unemployment benefits and those who are not claiming unemployment benefits can both be counted as unemployed based on their survey responses.
Individuals who are not working and are not looking for work are not considered part of the labor force and are not included in the unemployment rate calculation.
Nonfarm jobs filled in Nebraska reached 1,071,382, down 2,300 from the month before and up 21,696 from the prior year. Private industries showing the most growth over a year’s time were private education and health services, up 8,024 jobs and manufacturing, up 4,184 jobs.
Nationally, the District of Columbia had the highest unemployment rate, 5.7%. It was followed by Nevada, at 5.5%, and Illinois and California, which were both at 5.3%.

MIDLANDS Business Journal
Feature a new hire, promotion, or accolade to inform the leaders of the Omaha metro, Council Bluffs and Lincoln communities through MBJ. Published and featured on MBJ.com and in the next available issue of MBJ after approval.
The following are some guidelines to consider when posting legal notices with the Midlands Business Journal:
1. Submit a written notice in either Microsoft Word or as a PDF document either through mbj.com or through the Legal Department at legals@ mbj.com. For trade names, submit a copy of approved (bar code in upper right hand corner) Application For Registration of Trade Name from the Secretary of State to the same email address.
Please include your billing address and the desired duration you’d like your notice to run (trade names run for only one week). As a publisher and not a legal advisor we print notices exactly as they are submitted and therefor only comp reruns when the notice was rejected or messed up due to a MBJ error.
All companies submitting notices are responsible for ensuring the content fits with the State’s requirements and are responsible for the cost of republishing the notice if it is rejected due to misinformation or missing information
2. You will receive a confirmation and price quote. Legal notices, except for trade names, are charged per line. The flat fee for a trade name is $50. Payment is now credit or debit card.
3. Deadline is 5 p.m. on Monday for a notice to start publishing that Friday.
4. All costs include fees to file the notice with the Secretary of State and/or any appropriate courts.
5. Invoices must be paid prior to publication.
