The Business of Pizza AN ENDURING FAVORITE IN OMAHA

No matter where you crave it or what style you fancy, Omaha’s growing pizza scene offers a little something for everyone from old-school favorites to fresh new pies.

Nebraskans, like any region of the U.S., can be particular about cuisine. This made Aaron McCann’s venture to bring New York-based Williamsburg Pizza to Omaha somewhat of a gamble. Sure, the company earned its spurs in one of the most cutthroat pizza markets in the country, growing to five locations throughout the Big Apple, but the question remained if Midwestern tastes would welcome the big city interloper.

McCann, an Omaha expat who relocated to New York to learn the art of the dough, opened the spot last May with veteran franchise restauranteur Matt Hodges and within two months the duo had their answer: Omaha had become the busiest Williamsburg Pizza location in the country.

For the record, McCann never doubted for a second that the product would strike a chord in his hometown.

“There was no skepticism, only optimism,” he said. “I’d always wanted to bring [this type of pizza] back to my hometown. And we’re bringing a really high-quality product.”

Universal chew

So much for the long-held attitude that pizza tastes are regional, although that may have once been true. As Williamsburg’s experience shows — and that of pizza joints old and new in Omaha — the dish is about as universal as dining gets. The USDA estimates about 13% of the U.S. population eats pizza on any given day, a $16.5 billion industry segment that’s fueled by the dish’s convenience and portability (an estimated 30 million slices sold in the U.S. daily) but also due to a deeper connection, McCann said.

“Ever since we were children, way before we ever started grabbing a couple of beers with our buddies, pizza was the symbol of a party,” he said. “When you were a little kid and the pizza showed up, it was a party.

You still see people get that excited look on their face when you deliver a pizza to them. I think it’s just like hardwired into us.”

As a category, pizza is thriving. In its annual State of the Pizzeria Industry Report, Pizza Today magazine projected the industry would grow another $42 million by 2025. Social media is proving an accelerant for the sector, bringing legions of eager fans to old-school and cutting-edge joints alike.

“I think what’s exciting is there are other people doing pizza and they’re trying to come up with their own style,” said Nicole Jesse, co-owner and general manager of La Casa, which lays claim to the oldest pizza restaurant in the city. “They’re introducing some very unique and different flavor options and they’re doing things their own way.

“When my grandparents opened it, La Casa was literally the first restaurant to serve pizza and we have been called ‘Omaha style’ pizza. We’ve been known for our hamburger pizza since day one and we have a lot of longtime customers, generations of families, who grew up with La Casa. But it doesn’t mean there isn’t another good pizza out there, these other places that have opened and been able to introduce some different styles of pizza.”

Friendly competition

Jesse isn’t alone in her viewpoint; unlike other parts of the country where competing pizzerias and their clientele almost rabidly debate whose pie is best, Omaha’s pizza purveyors appear to have retained an element of congeniality. David Losole is one such pied piper; not only does he regularly welcome guests into the kitchen of Virtuoso Pizzeria, which he opened in 2017, but he also started the Metro Omaha Pizza Alliance as a

way for operators to network.

“I tell people all the time, there’s levels to pizza,” he said. “You can’t hate on Little Caesar’s for serving mass pizza at an affordable price. Is it the best pizza? Best is pretty subjective; it’s still pizza.

“It’s up to you as the operator/owner, whatever you want to do, how do you want to represent your company? Is consistency where you’re at? Are you cheap, fast and cheesy? What do you want to be? The public will let you know if it’s good or bad as people decide whether or not you’re worthy to go. To me that’s, that’s kind of cool.”

For others, the opportunity to make pizza is a means to tell the story of culture and life experiences far different from what most customers may experience. Nick Strawhecker, owner of Dante, visited Italy with his family in 1989, giving him his first taste of Neapolitan pizza. Even at age 10, he knew he’d found the canvas upon which he’d paint his professional life.

“From the beginning, I kind of understood what that meant. Neapolitan pizza means of Naples, it means wood-fired oven only, it means fresh mozzarella, it means hand-stretched,” he said. “There’s nothing more pure in my life, other than my children, than what I feel when I’m working the wood oven, preparing a pizza. A year ago, I’m walking in Pompeii with my son and there’s a little joint there with a wood oven that’s the same oven we have here. This tradition goes back millennia and it just blows me away.”

Pie business

The urge to create pizza may start from a place of passion, but it only matures through practice, attention to detail and hard work.

“Omaha is an exciting place for pizza because there are so many different styles offered here, made by people who are absolutely passionate about their work,” said Mary Joseph, owner of Tasty Pizza. “What we really concentrate on with our pizza is consistency, especially with the crust.

“It’s challenging because it’s alive, so the weather, the proofing time, the method of mixing, all of that is going to affect the outcome. We can sell a thousand pizzas, and no two pizzas are the same, so I wouldn’t say we’ve developed ours, it’s very much a work in progress and basically we try to replicate the good and avoid the bad.”

A select few over the years did crack the code on attaining uniformity of product without sacrificing quality. Godfather’s Pizza started like any other independent pizzeria only to be multiplied across a vast franchise network. Founder Willy Thiesen grew the venture to 900 locations before selling out shortly after taking the company public. Today, he still recalls the people behind the restaurants most fondly, people with whom he partnered to produce a dish everyone could afford and enjoy. He said it is emotional to visit one of his former restaurants, especially the first franchise store in Columbus.

“That store is one of, I think, three or four in the country that makes the dough and does the quantities the exact same way as I did at the original,” he said. “I’ve got a picture somewhere from when I was up there; we ordered a half taco, half something else and I’m telling you, you close your eyes and it’s 50 years ago. It’s authentic, it didn’t change.

“Pizza specifically is a shared item and when you share food, you gain trust, you gain knowledge, you share emotions.”

Cybersecurity in 2024 NEBRASKA DATA PRIVACY ACT AND THE ROLE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

It’s no secret that hackers are constantly finding new ways to cause chaos. Now at the start of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, local IT experts weigh in on important updates to the digital landscape.

Nebraska Data Privacy Act

Starting on January 1, 2025, the act will grant Nebraska residents various rights concerning their personal data. These rights include the ability to confirm the processing of their personal data, access their data, correct any inaccuracies, delete personal data collected about them, opt out of having their personal data processed for targeted advertising, and more. In addition, small businesses will be prohibited from selling data without consent.

“This act will allow Nebraska residents to better control their data privacy by requiring larger businesses to delete/not retain data upon the request of the data owner,” explained Denise Mainquist, president for ITPAC Consulting. “This law mirrors other data privacy laws in other states and will apply to most all businesses who have

Nebraska residents as clients.”

Deanna House, assistant professor at the College of Information Science & Technology at the University of Nebraska Omaha, said the Data Privacy Act will offer reassurance to consumers who seek more control over how their data is used.

The Role of AI

Whether it’s stealing credit card information, using a virus to damage a computer, or even taking down a complete network, there are people out there looking to make trouble. AI is providing an extra layer of protection, giving cybersecurity professionals greater insights into identifying threats, spotting irregularities, and helping to quickly react and prevent further issues from developing.

Despite that positive aspect, there are also threat actors who are using AI in a negative way.

“One of the most recent and dangerous ways threat actors are leveraging AI is to impersonate people as part of social engineering attacks,” said Chris Vilim, president of CoreTech. “Using AI to create

written, verbal, and even video likenesses of individuals are new tactics that hackers are using to perpetrate business email comprise and CEO fraud types of attacks.”

Tyler Reher, CEO of Appsky, reiterated the power that AI has for both good and bad.

“As AI becomes more prevalent in our day-to-day systems, both its potential to protect and its ability to be exploited will grow,” he said.

Tips to stay secure

While there are many precautions that you can take, there is not one single specific method that can prevent a cyberattack. That’s why it is important to stay vigilant. Puja Kandel, principal owner of CMIT Solutions of West Omaha recommended the following to stay safe online: create strong passwords and change them regularly, don’t overshare on social media, use free Wi-Fi with caution, and be careful what you click on.

Mainquist expanded on these tips, recommending that using password keepers to store unique passwords for all accounts and websites is helpful. This ensures you not only have access to your passwords, but that they are encrypted, so you can carry them safely wherever you go.

“Fake Wi-Fi networks can be set up with the intention of skimming all the passwords of anyone using them,” she said. “Or always use a personal VPN – although know that sometimes it blocks access to some websites. Using your own personal hotspot is another tip that can keep your information secure.”

Vilim noted that in addition to keeping both business and personal operating systems and applications updated, it’s important to regularly check your privacy settings in your web browsers and mobile

devices, too.

“Adjust them to limit the amount of your data that can be shared,” he said. “Pay special attention to your social media accounts and what settings you have in place. Pay attention to the settings on your phone that allow for device-to-device connections and sharing. Functions like Airdrop are very convenient, but it is also another path

KEEPING YOUR COMPANY APP SECURE

After creating a company app, it’s important to prioritize its security. by educating your team on app security best practices and conducting regular security tests. Additionally, don’t delay any software updates.

“Keeping software up to date remains important to close vulnerabilities as they are discovered,” said Tyler Reher, CEO of Appsky.

This will help expose any inconsistencies or glitches that could leave the app vulnerable to outside threats. In addition, prioritizing data encryption and using multi-factor authentication are some of the best ways to ensure users provide additional information that can prevent a security breach. Lastly, use firewalls as a filter to halt potentially hazardous traffic from getting onto your network and accessing data.

As for consumers, Reher provided these key tips and the first begins with always downloading apps from official app stores like the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

“Before downloading an app, take the time to read the reviews and ratings to identify any red flags or issues other users have experienced,” he said. “When you first open a new app, you’ll often encounter several permission requests. Don’t just click through these prompts! Be mindful of what the app is asking for and if it is necessary. Does the app really need access to your contacts, location, or camera? In many cases, granting these permissions is not essential for the app’s basic functionality. By limiting unnecessary access, you can reduce your risk of exposing sensitive data.”

for a hacker to try to access your device.” House noted that criminals are creative and opportunistic.

When it comes to using your phone and/or apps in public spaces, don’t connect to an unsecured Wi-Fi network. Also, be mindful of what you’re reading or typing in public.

“It’s easy for someone to gather information just by reading from your screen,” Reher explained. “Both physical and digital security are important, so always be cautious when accessing sensitive information in public.”

As technology changes and advances, criminals are ramping up efforts to devise plans to thwart what your business has worked hard for, or what you as a consumer are trying to hold close.

Approaching DEIA MAKING MEANINGFUL INVESTMENTS

JOSIE SCHAFER

DIRECTOR, CENTER FOR PUBLIC AFFAIRS RESEARCH, UNO

Diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA) efforts for respective organizations and communities are increasingly the subject of discourse. Awareness and discourse lends itself to opportunities to act, but in and of itself is just the start in the journey to more diverse, inclusive, equitable, and accessible workplaces and cities.

DEIA is also under the spotlight locally, courtesy of survey findings released late last month. In partnership with the UNO’s Center for Public Affairs Research, the Greater Omaha Chamber noted in its 2024 Young Professionals Survey Report that 92% of respondents “actively advocate for DEI” in their workplaces. Additionally, 80% said they believe their employers are actively promoting such initiatives, while 93% agreed that focusing on DEI in the workplace is a “good thing.”

However, it was also noted that 31% of respondents had experienced discrimination or been treated unfairly by employers due to their race, age, gender, sexual orientation, and physical or mental illness. Forty-one percent also noted that they are dissatisfied with opportunities for promotion and/or advancement, with 58% believing that they would “have to move to another state” to earn a promotion.

“This report tells us there is almost unanimous support from young

professionals in both advocating for more inclusive environments and supporting the quality of life Omaha has to offer,” said Greater Omaha Chamber President and CEO Heath Mello.

Josie Schafer, Ph.D., and director of UNO’s Center for Public Affairs Research, also isolated the role that DEIA is playing as a cause of “brain drain.” While she alluded to many positives: “Still, there are opportunities to support young professionals in their career journeys to ensure they stay and grow in the region.”

She highlighted offering opportunities for promotion and advancement, flexible scheduling, fair compensation, and collaborative and rewarding workplace cultures.

“Of clear note, 93% of respondents said focusing on diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace was a good thing,” Shafer said. “But 23% of respondents did not feel that their employer actively promotes diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives within their workplace.”

As Chief Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Belonging Officer at the Greater Omaha Chamber, Dell Nared, Jr. has witnessed “significant strides” in these efforts across the metro area.

“Businesses and organizations are increasingly moving from surface-level initiatives to integrating DEIB into the very fabric of their workplaces,” he stated.

INCLUSION

For those who are taking a closer look at their DEIA programs and seeking to drive meaningful changes, Nared suggested integrating and embedding these activities into one’s strategic planning processes.

“[They are] ensuring that these values are reflected in every aspect of their operations — from recruitment and onboarding to performance management and employment engagement,” he said.

He suggested building DEIA into long-term strategic goals while also ensuring that leadership is modeling inclusive behaviors.

“Use data to track your progress and measure outcomes,” Nared added.

With the emphasis on inclusive hiring stronger than ever, he said that companies are reassessing their recruitment processes in an effort to appeal to diverse talent pools. This is occurring as they invest in employee development and retention.

“Mentorship programs and employee resource groups (ERGs) are playing critical roles in fostering an inclusive culture and supporting career growth for diverse talent,” Nared said. “Introduce structured mentorship programs and sponsorship, and ensure leadership is committed to creating paths for advancement. Create open feedback channels to gauge how DEIB efforts are perceived amongst individuals within the organization.”

Nared also referenced how supplier diversity is gaining speed in the metro.

“At the Chamber, we are actively encouraging our member organizations to diversify their supply chains, ensuring that MBEs (minority business enterprises), WBEs (women-owned business enterprises) and other diverse suppliers have equal opportunities to thrive,” he explained. “Set clear goals for diversifying your suppliers and track progress. Build long-term relationships with diverse suppliers and provide mentorship and resources to help them succeed.”

Nurturing accessibility

Through the Center for Disability Inclusion, Meaghan Walls collaborates with organizations to fill their gap in accessibility and disability.

When asked about current investments in these measures, the CEO said generally people do not fully understand what the work entails and the outcomes it generates for more inclusive and innovative workplaces.

“They don’t understand that it is everything from a wage equity audit to ensuring your application process (technology) is fully accessible to a robust supplier diversity program and beyond,” she stated. “While DEIA in general has taken substantial heat in recent years, disability inclusion efforts have strengthened with the businesses we work with.”

Walls believes this traction is due to acknowledgment that disability is the “most intersectional identity,” impacting a reported 26% of U.S. adults — a demographic that “brings great value to their organizations.”

For many years, this was not the case.

“Disability was not even a DEI demographic businesses were interested in talking about, and now they are actively integrating disability inclusion efforts into their overall DEIA plans,” she said. “They are investing in partnerships, disability-centric training and event attendance.”

In fact, Walls said the organization had a 98% partner retention rate last year.

“Sometimes, with DEIA work, it can feel like there are too many silos, either by department or business unit,” she said of the biggest pitfalls and challenges. “Sometimes, the different ERGs haven’t realized all the intersecting interests they have and the power they could harness through more strategic collaborations.”

Walls described the feeling that “D,” “E,” “I” and “A” are all rowing in the same direction but in different canoes.

“When it is embraced that none of us are only any one part of our identity and all parts bring value to workplace cultures, all aspects of DEIA are now rowing in the same direction in the same boat,” she added.

To embed these notions into the very fabric of the workplace, tapping into the

power of the disability ERG can be fruitful.

“Harnessing the passion of a group of dedicated employees to set disability inclusion priorities and lead the change within their organization has elevated many business’s impact in this space,” she explained. “These efforts have resulted in ADA task forces being developed, integrating processes to do physical accessibility audits at their locations [and] revamping the reasonable accommodation process, to name a few.”

Additionally, ERGs are developing initiatives and sharing successes with other disability ERGs.

“The ERG in one partner company launched their disability ERG and over five years it has grown to 1,750 members globally,” Walls said.

Its Leader in Disability Inclusion Process, launched in 2023, reportedly provides a carefully designed path to bring progress in the disability inclusion space.

“This process starts with benchmarking the organization’s current processes, policies and programs with relation to disability inclusion, and supports the development of a disability inclusion strategic plan and consults with the teams along their journey through the various program requirements,” she said.

At the end of each year, companies may apply for the “Seal of

Approaching DEIA

MAKING MEANINGFUL INVESTMENTS

Businesses and organizations are increasingly moving from surface-level initiatives to integrating DEIB into the very fabric of their workplaces.

Accomplishment,” recognition of their efforts and progress in enhancing their company’s disability-inclusive culture.

“When a motivated and passionate group of employees are empowered with the resources and blessing to advance a DEIA effort that positively impacts access to jobs, brings more diverse recruiting, improves overall retention, builds community and the overall culture, they are nearly unstoppable,” she said.

As a business imperative, disability inclusion starts with retention.

“Eighty-three percent of people with disabilities acquire them at some point in their life, and 20% of workers will experience a disability lasting one or more years,” she said.

Investments persist as politics divide

A big part of Inclusive Communities’ work is about “normalizing” the conversation of meaningful cultural change as directly tied to discussions about DEIA, according to Programs Manager Veronica Switzer.

“We bring intentional experiences and facilitated conversations to community, youth and business spaces — to support the development of the skills and confidence to have conversations that bring about change,” she said. “We connect with committed individuals and train them as either volunteers or contracted facilitators (or sometimes both) in best practices for cultivating inclusive spaces and courageous people.”

With so much public attention focused on DEIA, Switzer said it may seem these are “deeply contentious social ideas.”

– DELL NARED JR., CHIEF INCLUSION, DIVERSITY, EQUITY & BELONGING OFFICER, GREATER OMAHA CHAMBER

“We work daily to demonstrate that these concepts are fundamental to our human experience and that these ideas offer a benefit to each one of us,” she explained. “DEIA are simply tools to help us figure out how we can build a healthy and respectful culture where all people can thrive.”

In recent months, their organization has adapted to “frame” the conversation to the larger community.

“We have seen many public institutions distancing themselves from the language of diversity, equity and inclusion,” Switzer noted. “The words have become political footballs to scare people into thinking that their rights, their experiences and their values are somehow going to be delegitimized. When, in fact, these conversations are a way to uplift as many voices as possible.”

Often framed as such, she continued that it is not a “trade-off.”

“Making space and creating equity for those who have not had that access does not take away from others,” she stated.

Switzer also encouraged resisting the tendency to look for “quick fixes” or an easy button.

“It is a myriad of concerted as well as independent efforts by individuals and organizations that bring about this change,” she said. “It is regular and constant commitment for progress.”

Research also bears out that DEIA concepts must go beyond learning.

“There must be continuous integrated practice,” Switzer said. “It becomes a part of the DNA of an organization when the questions about diversity, equity, inclusivity and accessibility are a part of the beginning conversation of any new project, new product, new campaign.”

BRINGING AUTHENTICITY TO THE WORKPLACE IN THE AGE OF

Discussion on ethics often includes words like dignity, integrity and authenticity. These concepts can mean different things to different people, so how do we reconcile it all and be our true selves in the workplace while upholding ethics for both the organization and the individual?

Key to authenticity

AnnMarie Marlier, executive director of Business Ethics Alliance, a leading organization for discussion on ethics in the workplace, said she began thinking about ways to describe authenticity earlier this year when faced with questions about identifying what is real in the age of artificial intelligence.

“Authenticity really reflects a part of what ethics are and what trust is, and then, by extension, what we do in educating the community about positive practical business ethics education,” Marlier said.

She noted practicing authentic exchanges is also important when it comes to the organization’s mission.

“Can we do that, not only as a staff, but also encourage our trustees and the community to do that in a way that allows us to be who we are when we share that best message of being ethical and in that authenticity, how can we guarantee that we are being authentic? How can we assure each other of that?” she said.

Events such as the Alliance’s Summer Mind Candy Dialogue addressed those questions and challenged what it means to bring your whole self to work. Marlier said it’s always a fine line to walk.

“What responsibilities do the employees and the employers have to each other to say: we understand there are times when those things are absolutely allowed, encouraged and discussed openly, but there may be some times when the business that needs to be done by those employees, needs to fall in line a little bit more with what the employer expects, even if it eclipses the employee’s personal sense of authenticity,” she said.

Clearly stated expectations are key in these instances so that all involved can feel fulfilled.

Mark Pohl, programs & planning manager of utility operations at OPPD, said that the organization ensures that authenticity is clear and real for all levels.

“Respect, trust and a culture of curiosity form the core of everything we do — it empowers employees to be their authentic selves at work, feeling secure and cared for enough to bring forward diverse ideas as well as bring risks to light,” Pohl said. “If you see something, say something is a responsibility we expect from all of our employees.

At Security National Bank, “do the right thing” and “all employees feel valued and heard,” are stated core values for the company.

Madeline Moyer, SVP, diversity & inclusion officer, market manager, said the bank fosters a culture around those values.

“We want to support the dignity and self-esteem of every employee, and we encourage every employee to bring their authentic self to work every day,” Moyer said. “We understand the importance of building diverse teams. DEI reflects our core values as ethical human beings, as our core value states It’s the right thing to do.”

I think it’s very important for an organization, whether it’s for profit, not-forprofit, governmental, or community-based, to understand what the mission is of the organization, what the values are, and then how to live those values and morals every day through ethical behavior.

He said the recognition empowers the Chalice Health team to continue innovating and expanding its reach.

“More importantly, it provides us with a platform to connect with potential investors, partners, health care providers and patients who

share our vision of a health care system that works for everyone,” Airiohuodion said. “We see this as a catalyst for further growth and impact.”

Furthermore, he noted how the intense preparation involved with the process pushed Chalice Health to critically examine its business model and identify areas for improvement.

“Ultimately, the experience solidified our commitment to making health care more accessible and affordable, empowering both patients and providers through our platform,” Airiohuodion said.

True impact

While the competition hosted by the Midlands African Chamber was acknowledged as a “pivotal moment” for Chalice Health, he said the greatest source of pride resides in the “tangible impact we’re making on people’s lives.”

Seeing patients rave about their experience using our platform, sharing stories of how Chalice Health has improved their access to care and reduced their health care costs is incredibly rewarding.

- EDDY AIRIOHUODION, DIRECTOR, CHALICE HEALTH

“Seeing patients rave about their experience using our platform, sharing stories of how Chalice Health has improved their access to care and reduced their health care costs is incredibly rewarding,” Airiohuodion said. “Additionally, forging strong partnerships with health care providers and building a thriving community within our platform has been a significant milestone.”

Its strategy for reaching those who need the services the most — such as those with limited to no insurance, high deductibles and/or chronic conditions — particularly resonated with the judges panel.

“We emphasized our focus on the uninsured and underinsured and our commitment to leveraging technology to overcome barriers to care,” he said. “By offering transparent pricing, easy scheduling, and a wide range of health care providers, we aim to empower individuals to take control of their health.”

Airiohuodion quantified its benefits as reducing wait times by up to 75% (due to connecting with qualified providers in a quick and efficient manner) and saving up to 60% on costs (due to transparent pricing and the elimination of “surprise bills”). And, rounding out key benefits, he highlighted access to complete care facilitated by its platform — allowing for one to choose from telemedicine, in-person visits or home-based care.

Enhanced platform

Looking to the future, the clinical pharmacist and entrepreneur said Chalice Health is poised to launch its health care marketplace for beta-testing in the fall, and he encourages individuals to sign up on its website.

“Our users’ experience is very important to us, and we are focused on making our marketplace platform effective and efficient for all users,” he

stated.

Airiohuodion also indicated the company plans to make inroads with more patients and providers across the country.

“We are focused on building strategic partnerships to enhance our platform and offer even more value to our users,” he said. “By combining technology, affordability and a patient-centered approach, Chalice Health is redefining the health care experience for millions of Americans.”

BCBSNE HOSTS FREE COMMUNITY FLU SHOT CLINICS AT YMCAS

As fall sets in and flu season begins, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) is stepping up to support the community with free flu shot clinics throughout the state.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that flu, COVID-19 and RSV cause thousands of deaths and hospitalizations yearly in the U.S. Dr. Josette Gordon-Simet, BCBSNE’s chief medical officer, says the flu vaccine is one of the best defenses against viral infections.

“Getting your flu shot is an essential part of preventing illness, protecting not only your health but also the health of those around you,” said Dr. GordonSimet.

As part of the company’s mission to champion the health and well-being of its members and the communities it serves, BCBSNE hosts free flu shot clinics for community members ages six and up, regardless of health insurance coverage. This year, BCBSNE and YMCAs across the state will host 21 free community flu shot clinics in partnership with Hy-Vee Pharmacy and local health departments.

“Each year, the flu strain may look different,” said Dr. Gordon-Simet. “It’s important to keep your vaccination current, so you’re not bringing illness to your family and loved ones. The clinics are a great way for us and community members to show commitment to health and well-being.”

Visit NebraskaBlue.com/FluShot to register for an appointment at one of the clinics:

• Twin Rivers YMCA – Oct. 30 from 9 to 11 a.m.

• BCBSNE – Oct. 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Last year, over 600 Nebraskans received their flu shot at BCBSNE’s clinics, a testament to BCBSNE’s commitment to health and well-being.

Dr. Gordon-Simet emphasized the motivation behind the clinics is keeping people healthy. “We are committed to expanding access to vaccinations,” said Dr. Gordon-Simet. “Our belief in this community and our dedication to keeping people healthy drives everything we do.”

The S&P 500’s Concentration is a Denominator Problem

There has been a lot of concern from “strategists” and financial media about how concentrated the S&P 500 has become. For background, this is a benchmark of the 500 largest US companies that is weighted by market capitalization, or equity value. Some point out that such concentration is not healthy, has never proven to be durable, and it’s just a matter of time until these firms fall off the mountain top. In short, these companies have become so large that there just can’t be much upside left. We disagree. While these are US-based companies, they generate sales and earnings on a global basis. Their international operations are a major component of their equity valuation. Comparing this numerator only to the sum of the 500 largest US firms is faulty math. A more appropriate denominator is one that includes all global equities. On this basis, this “concentration” issue is much less daunting.

US Market Concentration Not Concerning

Source: HFS, FactSet, World Federation of Exchanges, Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association

According to FactSet, the S&P 500 carries a market capitalization of just under $46 trillion. However, this isn’t even the full value of all publicly traded US stocks. That number is around $55 trillion, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association. We know that the top 6 firms in the S&P 500 are global companies. About half of Microsoft’s sales came from overseas last year. Apple only generated 42% of its revenue from the “Americas” region, which not only includes the US but Canada, Mexico, and South America. Thus, to get a true perspective of how much runway remains, we should be comparing the valuations of global companies on a global basis. According to the World Federation of Exchanges, the equity value of all publicly traded firms is about $116 trillion. Importantly, this isn’t a static amount. It has grown from $31 trillion in 2000.

These US-based companies continue to take market share on a global basis, and their equity valuations reflect this reality. In our opinion, the market has never seen firms like these that have such incredible global scale and deep competitive advantages that allow them to sustain high growth rates and margins for this long. We argue that they have no true international rivals and continue to branch out into large new markets, including health care, shipping, and financial services. Thankfully, they’re headquartered right in our backyard.

Bio: Over the past 26 years, Jason Alfaro has built a reputation for being able to build, and manage, real estate developments and investments worth billions of dollars. Alfaro has done everything from helping build a real estate platform, to leading iconic real estate redevelopment projects. In May 2024 he was named CEO of Omaha-based Metonic, a company with an equally diversified background, ranging from asset and construction management to real estate solutions.

What drew you to Metonic? Founded in 2012, Metonic is built on the investment legacy of two Omaha families with a history spanning over 100 years. One of the families, the Silvermans, had previously invested with me in another venture. Over the past decade, I

Midwest Leaders Q&A METONIC’S CEO, JASIN ALFARONE

developed a deep connection with Scott Silverman, and we spent countless hours discussing both investment strategies and personal philosophies. Our conversations often centered on Metonic, reflecting on its historical achievements and its potential for future growth. By early 2024, as Metonic was undergoing a transition and I was exploring my next opportunity, the timing felt perfect. At Metonic, we uphold Midwestern values, intellectual honesty, and investment integrity, all while aiming to enjoy the journey and accomplish great things along the way.

Job swap: if you could do any other job, what would it be and why? I’d choose to be a golf caddy. For one, the scenery is fantastic. Plus, caddying shares a lot in common with investing: it involves offering advice, understanding the course, maintaining it, and providing moral support. Just as golfers swing the club to make the shot, our investors take action on their investments.

What is a project that Metonic is working on that excites you and why? This quarter, we’re set to break ground on Ravello Homes, a build-to-rent community in west Omaha. As the first to introduce this concept in Omaha, we’re excited about the opportunity it presents. This project marks a new vertical for us, allowing us to offer a uniquely differentiated multi-family product to the market. While our company is driven by big ideas, there’s nothing quite like the profound satisfaction of seeing those ideas come to life.

Who or what inspires you? I’ve been fortunate to achieve several professional successes in my career, and I’m eager to continue that momentum at Metonic. At this stage, my focus is on passing along that experience and knowledge to our Metonic team, helping to cultivate the next generation of exceptional real estate investors.

Do you like reading or listening to podcasts? What are you reading or listening to right now? Each day, I read articles from a variety of sources. While our business is rooted in real estate, it’s fundamentally a people business. Understanding how and why people live the way they do is just as crucial — if not more so — than delivering a new development on time and within budget.

What is the best piece of advice someone has given you?

Don’t major in the minor.

If you’re taking a client out for a meal, where are you going?

I wish the closing dinner spot still existed. Nowadays, with everyone being a foodie, we cater to each investor’s tastes. I split my time between Omaha and Chicago, so if I’m offering access, I’m a member of Soho House in Chicago and would take investors for a pre-dinner cocktail. In Omaha, there are a lot of great restaurants and I’ve really enjoyed The Drover for a steak as well as Dynamite for a nice modern place downtown.
