THE NEW 5,000 SQUARE FOOT NORTHWEST BANK LOCATION AT 168TH & BEDFORD STREETS MERGES TRADITIONAL AND MODERN BANKING BY ELIMINATING TELLER LANES, ADDING COMMUNICATION PODS AND INTERACTIVE TELLER MACHINES.
Focused on community
NORTHWEST BANK’S NEW LOCATION TAKES INNOVATIVE APPROACH
Each of the 20 branches of Northwest Bank benefit from the ability to do largely autonomous, community-based decision-making. Veteran banker and Omaha Region President John Bothof said measured decisions have been crucial to the performance of the institution with more than 400 employees which at present is just shy of $2 billion in assets. “We’re not focused first on growth but rather our 25-year strategic plan and good sound thinking in each of our markets,” Bothof said of the family-owned entity based in Spencer, Iowa.
Adapting for the Future Northwest Bank’s operational territory broadly follows from Sioux Falls to Lincoln and across Southern Iowa to Indianola and north of the I-35 and I-90 rectangle. The institution opened in Omaha in 1998 in an approximately 6,000-squarefoot building at 14320 Arbor St. A Sarpy County branch is located in a shared building at 9719 Giles Rd. in La Vista. Earlier this year work began on a 5,000-square-foot structure in fast-growing Northwest Omaha at 168th & Bedford streets. About $3.25 million is being invested in land acquisition, construction and technology for the venture. Seven employees will be assigned to the facility, that was slated to open this month. “It will reflect a change in the expectations of our customers and it is a transitional facility for us,” Bothof said. “It will not have traditional teller lines but will accommodate millennials who tell us they wish to bank on the phone or on the computer.”
Customers can use customer communication pods, engage with cash dispensing machines, but also know that customer-service personnel nearby can offer assistance. Bothof, whose father ran a sale barn and auction facility in Slayton, Minnesota, said Northwest Bank owners Neal and Dwight Conover are investing heavily in technology. Important to the new Omaha facility, as well as remodels within their branch network, is the use of interactive teller machine (ITM) technology. Each unit costs about $35,000. “It allows customers to visit with a live banker and that person is a Northwest Bank employee,” he said. Common transactions include deposit of checks, check cashing, and a myriad of questions from users. It also provides for customer transactions to be made from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. ITM technology will be added to the Arbor Street and La Vista facilities by the end of the year. Earlier this year about $12 million was invested in a new Northwest Bank operations center in Spencer, Iowa. Consumer banking enhancements include online capabilities for mortgage applications, car loans and deposits. Venmo and Zelle transfers are receiving increased usage. Business banking enhancements include remote deposit capture, online banking and automatic clearinghouse of wire transfers, among others. Bothof said Northwest Bank — while expanding its reach to customers with technology — gives strong emphasis to safeguarding its “tens of millions of dollars investment over the past 10 years” from security breaches.

While the technology can make bankers feel they don’t need brick and mortar locations, Bothof said the overall customer-service relationship is the driving factor when expansion of any type is discussed. “We realize that customer service and the relationships built are the most important — its our future,” he said. “Technology is important to offer for customer convenience but we know a bit more conversation and interaction is what many want.” Bothof said Northwest Bank’s focus will remain on the Douglas and Sarpy counties and that a fourth location could be in the fast-growing southwest Sarpy area. A location could involve a new building or a strategic acquisition. On the business side, Northwest Bank has three mortgage lenders and seven business bankers responsible for the Omaha market area. Two new positions have been added in the latter category.
Loans can be made as large as $25 million to $30 million. The bank is a Small Business Administration-approved lender. Low interest rates nationally squeeze margins for lenders, Bothof said. This comes at a time when more firms are seeking financing for erecting their own building, seeking equipment loans, purchasing franchise rights in additional markets, financing technology, among other things.
Stepping Up Northwest Bank’s lean staffing in each of its locations was tested in April 2020 when processing work had to be done quickly for more than 1,200 small businesses that sought aid from the federal Paycheck Protection Program. While Bothof anticipated the great demand for PPP monies, staff did not know how long it would be available, so they were prepared and were able to complete all of its existing customer applications during the first weekend.

“As a result, many of our customers referred others whose financial institution was not as prepared as Northwest,” Bothof said.
Leaders are Essential Bothof, who moved to Omaha in 1981 to work for Commercial Federal, then left for San Diego, before returning to Omaha in 1992 to join American National Bank, said his five years away from Omaha helped him appreciate the sincerity and work ethic in Nebraska. That attitude has taught him to identify employee retention as an important value at Northwest Bank. A management-training program started in 2017 has resulted in 10 of the trainees being hired. Nine members of that group remain with the bank. The sole exception went to law school. “I learn something everyday and I’m excited about what I do,” Bothof said. Four goals adopted by the Conovers drive decision-making and daily operations: being an employer of choice, a bank of choice, keeping the institution safe and sound, and being market centric. Continuing education is encouraged for Northwest Bank’s employees. Community involvement is equally stressed. For example, Sam Hamrick of the La Vista branch and Ryan Schlabs of Omaha recently earned the Champions Circle designation from the 500-member Nebraska Mortgage Association.
Bothof started his career in 1977 as a sixth-grade teacher and baseball coach in Ruthven, Iowa, a community of about 700 residents. While he had always been competitive and involved in athletic and non-athletic activities in high school and as a scholarship baseball player his senior year at Buena Vista University, Bothof found that his work ethic as a teacher exceeded that of a few colleagues who were receiving the same compensation as him. It was at that point that he left teaching after a year and identified the financial field as his new career interest. Bothof, in reflecting on his multi-decade banking career, stresses that he never wants to forget what differentiates a community-owned bank and the need to build and enhance customer loyalty. “In the early 2000s we determined that we wanted to maintain our levels of concentrations,” he said. “There were certain segments that had a more difficult time through that period than others. Therefore, we emphasized serving our existing customer as opposed to growing and taking on more concentration risk.” The 66-year-old Bothof, who completed additional classes in banking at the University of Nebraska at Omaha has never looked back.

Strong Work Ethic
INVESTIING IN nebraska
DRIVES NEBRASKA BUSINESS INVESTMENT BY DAVID KUBICEK
JANELL ANDERSON EHRKE CEO, GROW NEBRASKA
Driven by a strong work ethic and ready workforce, businesses are investing in Nebraska. Early this year the Small Business Administration launched 20 new women’s business centers, one of which was opened in Omaha, according to Janell Anderson Ehrke, CEO of GROW Nebraska Foundation. “[The center] works with many startups, so we’re doing a lot of training on what licenses they need, whereas Grow Nebraska is primarily focused on marketing,” she said. Once entrepreneurs are clients at the center, they can receive scholarships for memberships in Grow Nebraska. “We’re seeing a big trend of people wanting to get out and start businesses again because it’s a good time to get capital,” Anderson Ehrke said. “Nebraska is a good place to grow a business. We have a smaller workforce, and right now staffing is a huge problem, but we

have a strong work ethic here where people take pride in their work. Nebraska has always been a state that supports its own. We’ve had lots of success building some monumental companies, like Valmont, and Nebraska has had lots of businesses that started small and have turned into mega forces.” Rural Nebraska is aggressively building up its own communities, creating housing developments, retirement living facilities, trying to retain residents and keep good medical facilities. The Metropolitan Area Planning Agency (MAPA) provides planning and technical support for local government projects. This support takes the form of grant writing, grant administration, technical assistance and being a funding partner with local governments on projects, according to MAPA Executive Director Mike Helgerson. “The metro has had steady 1% annual

population growth across the region over the past 10 to 20 years,” he said. “Sarpy County was at 20% growth between 2010 and 2030. With investment in the watershed sewer infrastructure, they’re setting themselves up for more growth. “Growth in western Douglas County is moving at a steady clip. It really hasn’t slowed down much anywhere in the region with the pandemic. Between 2010 and 2050 our projections anticipate another half a million people in the region.” Through its statewide organization, Nebraska Regional Officials Council, MAPA is testing internet download and upload speeds across the state. “We know from the past 18 months that there are significant pockets of the community without access to broadband, both rural and urban [areas],” Helgerson said. “We’re working with other community partners on this, hoping

to use the data for grant applications in other projects.” MAPA’s new program, in partnership with Nebraska Enterprise Fund, provides loans to small and micro-businesses that can demonstrate job creation and job retention — about $35,000 for each job that is retained. “This is meant to be low interest, long-term financing to help smooth over the bumps that private industry and particularly small business has faced over the past year,” Helgerson said. Following two years of design and construction, Carson Wealth’s $80 million national headquarters opened this summer, according to a press release from Leo A Daly, which led architecture, engineering, and interior design. The 200,000-square-foot campus is comprised of a six-story 120,000-square-foot building, a two-story 20,000-square-foot amenity hub, and a four-story 80,000-squarefoot building.

“A sense of soaring and clarity pervade the new headquarters for the financial services leader, which comprises of 1,400 member firms, more than 110 partner offices, and manages $18 billion in assets,” Leo A Daly Project Manager Abby M. Goranson said. “The campus is composed of two main buildings, which are united by a central hub for amenities and a signature skywalk suspended above it. Viewed from Omaha’s arterial West Dodge Road, the campus generates a shimmering presence near the highest elevation of the burgeoning mixeduse development at Heartwood Preserve.” Carson Wealth employees, known internally as “stakeholders,” began occupying the new headquarters in May, and an official ribbon cutting is scheduled for October. Project development was led by Goldenrod Companies, Tetrad Property Group and JE Dunn served as general contractor. Investors Realty represented Scoular in
its new headquarters lease, according to Investors Realty Principal and Managing Broker Tim Kerrigan. “They are a 100-plus-year-old Omaha company employing over 1,000 people and generating a net inflow of dollars to Greater Omaha,” he said. “Scoular has significant plans for growth and their new space will help them attract and retain the top-quality talent they need to reach their goals.” Investors Realty is working with the owner to repurpose a former warehouse — more than 180,000 square feet — for more modern logistics purposes. This building with a central location near two interstate interchanges will provide growth opportunities for businesses in Omaha. The firm also has represented the buyer in a $7.5 million class ‘A’ office building purchase on West Dodge Road, the seller in a more than $20 million single tenant office

The firm’s historic preservation and historic tax credit practice includes the Benson Theater and the Hotel Indigo in downtown Omaha. “There are so many opportunities here, coupled with visionary professionals who are driven to help Omaha, and Nebraska, be a great place to live, work, and play,” Palu said. “Nebraska has been a really great place to base our practice. RESIDENTIAL real estate
AN UPDATE ON THE
Local Market
BY BROOKE STRICKLAND
JILL ANDERSON
PRESIDENT OF RESIDENTIAL SALES, NP DODGE REAL ESTATE
Whether you are a seasoned homebuyer that has owned multiple homes over the years, or you are putting away every extra penny to save toward a down payment on your first home, there is plenty to think about when it comes to the residential real estate market in Nebraska. While the pandemic changed a lot of things in the real estate industry, one thing is certain: Nebraska continues to be a place for people to put down roots.
Market Update
The real estate market is very strong right now in terms of demand. “In August 2021, Omaha home prices were up 11.6% compared to the same time last year, selling for a median price of $245,000,” said Jill Anderson, president of residential sales for NP

Dodge Real Estate. “August of 2021 saw a total of 1,112 new listings, whereas August of 2020 saw 1,357 new listings come on the market.
to low inventory, we are still in a seller’s market, yet buyers are experiencing more opportunities of choice within the last few months.”
“Homes that are priced correctly in Omaha are receiving accepted offers after seven days on the market (which is similar to last year). We saw less multiple offer situations in August, which doesn’t mean the market is cooling, but was normalizing to the seasonal market that we typically see this time of year.”
Tasha Moss from Omaha Real Estate Group said that the market is robust and steady.
Angel Starks, Realtor at Team Locale with Nebraska Realty, agreed that the residential market in Omaha is healthy and will continue to progress. “Home values are increasing steadily, but we also must acknowledge the lack of inventory and affordable housing options,” she said. “Due
“We are seeing more homes on the market than we did the first six months of the year, which is helping stabilize things,” she said
Challenges
The pandemic threw people around the country a curveball that they simply were not expecting. It was no different for real estate agents and potential homebuyers in Nebraska. “It has been a hard year for a lot of agents,” Moss said. “The inventory has been so low, and many buyers had to write offers on 10-plus
Page 14 • October 15, 2021
homes before they got one. That is a lot of time spent not only finding the home but spending time trying to write the perfect offer to get the home. A lot of buyers and agents were fatigued from the market conditions.” Starks reiterated that the competition is intense. “The industry is very competitive. Ensuring that clients are taking the time to fully understand contracts and such versus making emotional decisions can be challenging, but it’s a challenge we all signed up for,” she said. “Asking lots of questions and preparing for the journey is key.” Anderson noted that because the market is so hot, another challenge can be the emotional part of working with people that are experiencing the stress and pressure of the homebuying process. It can even feel a bit frantic at times.
We are seeing more homes on the market than we did the first six months of the year, which is helping stabilize things. - TASHA MOSS, OMAHA REAL ESTATE GROUP
“People hear houses are selling quickly above list prices, and sometimes get caught up in the frenzy of the moment,” she said. “If they are talking with a friend/relative/co-worker who just sold a house and hear a story about how they sold their house above list price, it sounds great; but they need to also realize that offer may have occurred 30-plus days ago. Real estate is fluid, so talk with a professional who has their pulse on the market and will provide the best information and advice.”
Local Trends
The pandemic impacted many local real estate trends that are happening right now. Because many people were home more and recognized their need for more space — particularly dedicated office space — people looking at buying a home put an increased demand on homes that had offices, larger yards or pools, and great views. Another trend that popped up in the last year is the creative ways that people are finding to get
the home of their dreams — especially when multiple offers are on the table. “Buyers are sacrificing many amenities such as home inspections, seller concessions, etc. Yet, again, as of recent, we’ve seen an uprise in opportunities for home inspections and financing other than conventional loans,” Starks said. Moss noted that she has also seen a lot of creative strategy going into residential home offers, but that things are starting to slow down a bit in that regard.
“When homes were getting 20-plus offers, you really needed to be able to find what the seller’s ‘dream closing’ would be like because every offer was well over list price,” she said. “We saw a lot of buyers paying for the seller’s closing costs, no inspections, escalation clauses, long term rent back for free, and other perks offered in an attempt to entice sellers.” Higher housing prices, particularly in newly constructed homes, is also something that people are facing right now. MOVING forward RACHEL TRUHLSEN, OWNER OF TRUHLSEN ELDER CARE LAW OF NEBRASKA
Filling Gaps in Elder Care TRUHLSEN ELDER CARE LAW OF NEBRASKA The opportunity to objectively solve problems is one of the reasons Rachel Truhlsen, owner of Truhlsen Elder Care Law of Nebraska, enjoys being a lawyer. But, when clients began asking questions she couldn’t answer, she saw the opportunity to evolve. “We’re a relationship community and firm,” she said. “When I felt like I couldn’t help them I felt like I wasn’t doing what I was suppose to do and what they had counted on me to do.” The evolution began seven years ago with the introduction of Medicaid planning, which Truhlsen said was a natural transition from the bulk of her business, estate planning. This year, the firm took a major step when it rebranded from Rachel A. Truhlsen Estate Planning and Elder Care Law Center to Truhlsen Elder Care Law of Nebraska. The announcement publicly defined the trajectory of the firm as it angles toward offering a continuum of care for elders. In particular, it emphasized life care planning, a service not widely offered in Nebraska.
An Evolution Of Care While asset protection and estate planning define what will happen financially and materialistically, life care planning handles the more human aspect of aging. It helps carve out plans for the “what ifs” of aging — the uncomfortable, hardto-talk-about topics families tend to avoid, or disagree about. What if a spouse/parent needs help with day-to-day activities? What if a home isn’t safe for aging? What if a spouse/parent has a medical condition such as dementia?
“It’s coming alongside the family and putting a plan in place,” Truhlsen said. “That way we’re not doing something in a reactive way, it’s in a controlled capacity where they (the client) has a decision.” Guiding clients through their journey is certified Elder Care Coordinator Janice Fitchhorn, who has spent the past 20 years in health care. “My educational and career background is in occupational therapy,” Fitchhorn said. “My career goals have always been to care for others and assist them to be safe and independent in the appropriate level of care.” Her experience in rural health care, geriatrics, and management gives her an advantage. For one, she’s trained to assess the safety of a home, which is one of the first things she does with clients during a situational assessment. Her experience also means she’s well versed in medical terminology, giving her the ability to be a bridge between doctors, clients and their families. “We have a lot of clients who have children out of state, so what Janice will do is work with the clients locally, like going to doctor’s appointments with them, so she can be that extra set of ears and communicate,” Truhlsen said. She noted that it’s not uncommon for clients to nominate Fitchhorn as their speaker during doctor visits. “A doctor will ask about medications, and what’s going on, and the client will look at Janice and say ‘talk to her, she knows better than I do,’” Truhlsen said. “She becomes part of the family. She becomes the person who communicates.”

WOMEN WHO rock AMY THOMPSON, MCCARTHY BUILDING COMPANIES
CONSTRUCTION pioneer
AMY THOMPSON: A PIONEERING SPIRIT BUILDING WOMEN’S REPRESENTATION IN CONSTRUCTION Like those who came before us in the Midlands, Amy Thompson may very well carry the torch as a “pioneer.” Pioneering qualities have characterized every step of her career; she currently serves as director of business development with McCarthy Building Companies’ Omaha office. Despite this lofty moniker, in a perhaps “typical” Midwestern way, Thompson is quite humble about her role as a leader within a traditionally underrepresented field for women. “Every woman in construction today is a pioneer, whether in an office or on a jobsite,” Thompson said. “Construction is a great career for women. And the National Association of Women in Construction reaches women builders in the trades, project management, marketing, administration and executive leadership.” McCarthy is a member of the Omaha Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction, which Thompson said provides education, support and networking to advance women’s careers, and build their technical and leadership skills. Interestingly, Thompson wasn’t born anywhere near here. It would take a more than 5,400-mile journey to get there.
“I was born in Brindisi, Italy,” Thompson said, a reference to a community right at the “heel” of the country’s “boot.” “My father was in the Air Force.” The family would land in Modale, Iowa and Thompson graduated from high school in Missouri Valley. “Both are just 45 minutes or so from the Omaha metro area,” she said. Thompson has called Omaha home for almost a quarter of a century. “While in college, I worked at an ad agency and, after getting my degree in 2001, I worked in marketing management roles within the technology and finance industries before entering the A/E/C [architecture, engineering, construction] industry,” she recalled. “I had a former boss who became a mentor, and he was the one who recommended I get into the A/E/C industry to sell ‘high-end professional services.’” This recommendation ended up being fortuitous, as Thompson joined DLR Group as its national sports business developer in 2005. She focused on Division IA university athletic departments and Minor League franchises.

The construction industry has come a long way in terms of providing leadership opportunities for women and educating young girls about future opportunities, but there’s still room for improvement. - AMY THOMPSON, MCCARTHY BUILDING COMPANIES “I think of the years there as my ‘glory days,’” Thompson said. “It was so much fun. The University of Texas Longhorns were my first client, and my first project ‘win’ was the Disch-Falk Field renovation-expansion.”
MAINTAINING PROFESSIONAL MOMENTUM
Thompson would pivot to Leo A Daly and health care business development in 2010, before transitioning to McCarthy seven years later. Today, her focus has been on core markets including health care, education, commercial, and advanced technology and manufacturing.
“Recently, McCarthy added a second business development professional in Omaha and now we’re expanding and succeeding,” she said in late September. “I’m interested emerging markets such as biosciences, higher education and industrial.” Thompson has also played an instrumental role in guiding the firm’s geographic expansion to other cities in Nebraska and Iowa, including Lincoln and Council Bluffs. Reportedly, as a key member of the Omaha executive leadership team, she has helped to secure over $600 million in new business since joining the company around four years ago. “In addition to being passionate about how construction projects ultimately benefit our clients and the people they serve,” Thompson continued, “I believe my success in developing effective business development strategies for winning small to large capital project pursuits is the result of my being well-organized, communicating effectively, following through and executing well-planned marketing campaigns.” It certainly doesn’t hurt that Thompson always wanted to be an advertising agency executive. “Like Angela Bower on ‘Who’s the Boss’ or Darren Stevens on ‘Bewitched,’” she said.
MAKING AN IMPACT
Thompson is fulfilling her childhood dream with a company that she describes as building critical projects to meet practical community needs, contributing favorably to residents’ health, safety and quality of life. “The opportunity at McCarthy appealed to me as I could be a part of a leadership team for a new, growing office which was exciting,” she said. “I also really appreciated the employee ownership offerings and believe that is one of our main differentiators when it comes to recruiting and retaining top talent.”
To that end, Thompson said women account for 9% of the construction workforce (a comment that aligns with Department of Labor statistics). “The construction industry has come a long way in terms of providing leadership opportunities for women and educating young girls about future opportunities, but there’s still room for improvement,” she said. “Throughout McCarthy, there’s strong support toward driving diversity of perspectives.” She spotlighted its national employee resource group, Partnership for Women, designed to introduce young women to construction careers and opportunities within the firm. “To equip female employees for long-term success, McCarthy’s central region developed a two-year career development program with a curriculum that includes strategic communication, negotiation, decision-making and other topics that will help women be more effective in their jobs,” Thompson said.
BUILDING ON SUCCESS A graduate of Bellevue University with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing Management and Metropolitan Community College with an Associate of Arts in General Studies, Thompson has earned Building Design & Construction’s “40 under 40” award, graduated from Leadership Sarpy in 2011, serves on Bio Nebraska’s board of directors and as its executive committee’s secretary (2021 to 2023). Additionally, Thompson indicated she is proud of her work with the Greater Omaha Chamber’s and Nebraska Economic Development’s MedTech Advisory Group, and holds the distinction as one of the first three women to join the Aksarben Foundation’s floor committee. “In 2010, I started The FAC (Friday Afternoon Club), a grassroots networking group comprised of local A/E/C professionals, with business development responsibility, and our valued clients,” she added. “It’s still going strong, and we have over 30 companies on our waitlist.” Like Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg, Thompson looks forward to the day when there are no “female leaders,” just “leaders.” “I look forward to expanding my role with McCarthy, and continuing to bring great projects to the people of Nebraska … attracting more women to career opportunities available to them in the construction industry.”

WINSLEY DURAND, EXECTIVE DIRECTOR OF REACH
PAYING IT forward
WINSLEY DURAND III BUILDS LEGACY OF MENTORSHIP With a career at the Greater Omaha Chamber spanning 15 years, Winsley Durand III has made his mark investing in others with the REACH program aimed toward small businesses. Throughout his career, Winsley Durand III has always invested in others. Through roles with the Greater Omaha Chamber and his “intra-preneurial” venture REACH, his mission has been to apply his skills and resources to help others overcome adversity, learn the ropes and succeed in business. Durand, REACH’S executive director, has worked for the Greater Omaha Chamber in some capacity for 15 years. Prior to his current job, he served as the chamber’s director of minority development and director of retail attraction, engaging in the group’s domestic and international business attraction efforts and military affairs activities. His wide-ranging impact on chamber efforts earned him Midlands Business Journal 40 Under 40 honors in 2008.
Since then, Durand founded REACH, an education-based capacity-building program for small and emerging businesses. It brings together many of the same tasks that were scattered through his various other roles within the organization. “In a prior life, I worked with a lot of contractors. We had a lot of small contractors that would come to me and ask for assistance,” he said. “David Brown, chamber CEO, was talking with the superintendent of schools and chancellor of the Med Center and mayor of Omaha and they were all saying how they were having a problem finding enough contractors, especially minority contractors. [Brown] said, ‘Hey, I’ve got a guy who can help devise a plan for you.’”
ASSISTING SMALL BUSINESSES
REACH initially just brought together both sides of the contractor equation, but it soon became apparent there were knowledge gaps to be addressed among small business owners.

There’s a collaborative nature to Omaha. People are willing to work together. - WINSLEY DURAND, EXECTIVE DIRECTOR OF REACH
“Basically, a project owner or general contractor would say, ‘Give me your list of contractors,’ and they called them up and offered an opportunity,” Durand said. “However, that methodology just doesn’t work effectively.
“The most effective pieces we have are when people have a pain point. Where there is a specific need, we help them through that specific need,” he said. “Then we say, ‘The next time you have this come up ...’, or ‘What’s your next challenge?’ and we try and put a little strategic thinking in there to help them prepare for the next thing. By helping them put in place a strategy, perhaps they are not caught behind the eight ball in the future.”
“So, before those opportunities come up, we provide education, financial literacy, help them do credit remediation, find them access to capital, work on their bonding capabilities and ability to read plans. We offer a 10-week Rachel Fox, who with her husband Brent Fox owns Fox Flooring in Omaha, said construction owner’s class where we have attorneys and accountants and Durand’s expertise through REACH had a major impact on their business. all sorts of professional services providing education about all the things somebody needs to know to efficiently, effectively run their business. We “Winsley just opened up his door and his resources to us to be able to grow and don’t teach them how to build walls or pour floors, we assume they have that scale our business,” she said. “One thing that stood out about him is he has knowledge coming in. What we do is we work with them on the business very deep and rich connections and he leverages those connections to help side of their business.” others. He’s very open and honest and giving. Those are qualities we respect and admire.” GIVING A CHANCE “Winsley gives folks a chance that other people have ignored,” said Jim Reiff, executive director of the Nebraska Enterprise Fund. “He’s given those folks an opportunity to grow, to see success, expand their businesses and expand their capacity. He gives them the opportunity to grow both professionally and personally.” The program is offered to chamber members and non-members alike and most services are free. Durand said the group’s methodology has evolved to a broader set of access points, most recently in a Spanish-language version.
As for the future, Durand says there’s plenty of challenges to be overcome throughout the city when it comes to entrepreneurism. He said he’s eager to apply REACH and its partners in such a way to maximize positive impact. “There’s a collaborative nature to Omaha. People are willing to work together,” he said. “We have lots of challenges, especially in our underserved areas, but because of the size of Omaha those challenges aren’t too unwieldy. They are solvable and there are people who are willing to roll up their sleeves. Nobody in town can move a mountain, but everybody’s willing to pick up a shovel.”

MEETING A NEED
LOCAL innovation KPI NINJA CPO VIJAY MUSUNURU, CTO NAREN PARIMI AND CEO VINEETH YEDDULA
Health Care Ninjas
KPI NINJA DRIVES HEALTH CARE OUTCOMES WITH ANALYTICS KPI Ninja is doing big things with data analytics in the health care space. The company helps health care institutions provide information for people to better improve health outcomes. Founded in in 2014, the company is owned by Vineeth Yeddula, CEO, Vijay Musunuru, CPO, and Naren Parimi, CTO. The idea for the company came from their real-life experience. “As prior health care leaders that were leading teams through improvement efforts, we first-hand experienced the health data obstacles related to seeing the right story efficiently,” Yeddula said. “So, armed with a mission to empower health care organizations and clinicians to improve care using health data, we created KPI Ninja.”
validated by numerous organizations and programs and holds multiple national certifications. While these certifications help establish reputability and trust with potential clients, the KPI Ninja team believes that their software is not the only driving force to securing a loyal client base. “KPI Ninja is different in that we do not just offer software solutions, but we work side-by-side with clients to provide technology that fits their needs and provide consulting on how to use the data to meaningfully improve patient lives,” Yeddula said. “Our core mission is to help improve the health of our communities. With that, our passions lie in supporting various health data use cases, rather than just solving data exchange obstacles or building data dashboards.”
Improving Patient Outcomes
Funding A Vision
The concept helps health organizations understand their current performance and identify key areas that need improvement. “We bring the data together for a cohesive view of the patient(s) and provide analytics to help providers and organizations understand their current performance. They then can use this data to make meaningful improvements on the outcomes that matter to their patients.” KPI Ninja’s core technology solution is called Ninja Universe. It has been
While obtaining adequate funding was a real challenge in their journey, they were able to receive grants from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development and seed money that was led by Invest Nebraska. After building trust with clients, KPI Ninja has seen rapid growth in its seven years of business operations. With 45 full-time employees, the company has seen a whopping 1,100% growth over the past three years. It currently supports about 22 million patient lives in the country.

Our core mission is to help improve the health of our communities. With that, our passions lie in supporting various health data use cases, rather than just solving data exchange obstacles or building data dashboards. - VINEETH YEDDULA, CEO, KPI NINJA
As the health care landscape changes — especially since the pandemic — KPI Ninja has worked to adapt its technology solutions while keeping customers at the forefront. “One of our differentiating factors is that we are nimble to the needs of our clients as they arise,” Yeddula said. “Whether that be something as simple as the need to quickly spin up a new report (like a report that gives a list of patients that have gone to the emergency room more than five times in the last six months), or more comprehensively with a full product solution.”
Supporting Health Care In A Pandemic During the pandemic, KPI Ninja played a critical part in supporting public health, helping create a real-time hospital bed management platform to help inform health authorities and support response efforts. The company was able to adapt its solutions for different states, depending on the need. “For one state we set up data integrations with more than 60 different hospitals
and developed a COVID-19 application in less than 36 hours to meet the needs (typical timeframe of six to nines months),” he said. “Around the same time, we supported another state to merge data from different data formats to create COVID-like, COVID-positive, COVID-recovered, and COVID-deceased patient rosters within 14 days.” KPI Ninja supports nearly every type of health organization across all sectors, whether it’s a single-provider primary care practice or a large hospital. “We are exploring the latest technology to meet the growing data needs,” Yeddulu said. Looking at the future, KPI Ninja has no plans to slow down. “We have been growing at more than 50% year-over-year, and we see ourselves as the leader in the health care technology space,” he said. “Our goal is to support 30% of the U.S population within the next 18 to 24 months. Our opportunity now is to capitalize on our position and together with our partners, continue to demonstrate the power of health data.”

AG trends
Latest Trends in Agriculture:
WHAT’S AFFECTING LINCOLN AREA AGRICULTURE PROFESSIONALS? Without a strong agriculture industry, our nation — and the world — would feel it. The whole industry has faced significant challenges in the last year and a half, but Nebraska continues to remain strong in production, with plenty of job openings at all levels.
The Opportunity Jay Rempe, Nebraska Farm Bureau’s senior economist noted that there is significant opportunity within agriculture right now. “Agriculture continues to work to fulfill market demands from both consumers here in the U.S. and in international markets,” Rempe said. “Many of those demands center around transparency and sustainability issues, similar to what we are seeing across all business sectors. As the population continues to grow and incomes increase, there are more demands for greater production from agriculture.” Greg Ibach, under secretary in residence for University of NebraskaLincoln’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources noted that the demand for qualified workers is significant, which creates opportunities for people looking for jobs. “Agriculture has job openings at all levels,” he said. “Farmers continue to face challenges in hiring for full and part-time positions in production agriculture. This is especially true during harvest time when more positions exist for extra workers for those harvest-related jobs. But workers are also needed in almost every sector related to production agriculture.” Many of today’s farmers are tech savvy, which bodes well for people looking to put their training in the technology field to use. “What’s important to remember is that today’s farmers use a wide range of tools including GPS, water sensors and even drones to collect, measure and analyze data to help them to better understand their land and what each individual crop needs for optimal yield,” Rempe said. “They vary and adapt their seeding and application rates to ensure that they are applying the right amount of seed, water, fertilizer, and crop protection products to each area of their fields. “This is sustainability at its finest. So, within these trends, tremendous opportunities lie for professionals to help agriculture address these complex needs and problems. At its roots, agriculture is a biological process, which is dynamic and ever-changing. Thus, the needs for specialists and professionals will likely continue to grow.”
The Dilemma As with many areas of the economy around the nation right now, agriculture is facing an acute shortage of workers. There are job openings at all levels in the industry — especially
during harvest season when more hands are needed. Workers are also needed in the production side of things. Mechanics, welders, plumbers and more are also in great demand. One of the most significant areas of impact in the last year and a half, however, has been in meat processing. “Our meat processing plants especially are facing shortages of workers,” Ibach said. “Demand is high for meat and meat products, and while there are ample supplies of livestock on Nebraska farms, ranches and feedlots, the number of animals that can be harvested is limited by challenges in hiring meat processing employees. As a result, demand for meat is driving prices higher, while the backup of eligible animals to fill that need is driving prices farmers receive lower.” Rempe noted there has been a profound impact on meat processing workers. “Last year’s struggles to keep processing facilities open while protecting worker safety were highly publicized,” he said. “One response by policymakers and industry participants has been to seek to increase processing capacity through additional investment in small to mediumsized facilities. The idea being capacity expansion will improve resiliency during unusual events like COVID-19 or other supply shocks.”
The Future Looking ahead, the agriculture industry is aiming to add people of all kinds to put their hands to work. In fact, the National Institute of Food and Agriculture estimates that by 2025, employment opportunities will remain strong, with almost 60,000 openings each year in food, agriculture, renewable natural resources and the environment. Julie Obermeyer, career development and corporate relations director for UNL, said that the college is working to help connect graduates with jobs and said that employers and recruiters are actively looking to hire candidates of all kinds. “We had over 70 employers attending our Ag and Natural Resources Career Fair Day, including national organizations as well as local Nebraska-based organizations,” she said. “At UNL, we have started hosting virtual career fairs, too. This fall, we are hosting a two-day virtual career fair, along with four days of in-person career fairs. With the industry bright and ripe for growth, it will just take the right people to step in to fill the gaps. “Agriculture in Nebraska remains strong and vibrant, and across the state, one in four jobs is related to agriculture,” Ibach said. “There are jobs in all categories of work and all categories of required training, including many not traditionally associated with agriculture.”

The following are some guidelines to consider when posting legal notices with the Midlands Business Journal: 1. Submit a written notice in either Microsoft Word or as a PDF document to the Legal Department at legals@ mbj.com. For trade names, submit a copy of approved (bar code in upper right hand corner) Application For Registration of Trade Name from the Secretary of State to the same email address. Please include your billing address and the desired duration you’d like your notice to run (trade names run for only one week). As a publisher and not a legal advisor we print notices exactly as they are submitted and therefor only comp reruns when the notice was rejected or messed up due to a MBJ error. All companies submitting notices are responsible for ensuring the content fits with the State’s requirements and are responsible for the cost of republishing the notice if it is rejected due to misinformation or missing information 2. You will receive a confirmation and price quote. Legal notices, except for trade names, are charged per line. The flat fee for a trade name is $50. Payment options are cash or check. 3. Deadline is noon on Tuesday for a notice to start publishing that Friday. 4. All costs include fees to file the notice with the Secretary of State and/or any appropriate courts. 5. You will receive a paid invoice copy the first week it runs.
