What’s your Personal Motto? Positively persevere.

Biggest career break: Being hired by Goosmann Law. For most of my career, I practiced federal Indian and tribal law, serving tribal governments and their businesses as General Counsel, Attorney General, and a Tribal Judge. While I loved the practice, it’s multidisciplinary work, leaving scant time to focus on one area. What I enjoyed focusing on was business deals and the associated transactional work; that is, implementing ideas. Goosmann Law allows me to focus on helping business leaders win disputes, protect their wealth, and do deals-so they can spend their time on what’s worth it.

A Mentor who has helped the most in my career is…My wife, Kathleen Johnson. Her skills as a former business manager, active listener and life coach are of immeasurable value to my career. Her pragmatic and objective advice often gives me a flash of insight at the least and an entirely new perspective at the most.

Who or what inspires you in your career? What inspires me is injustice. My exposure to both the richness of other cultures, along with the suffering in some of them, ignited a lifetime determination to be an ally, working together and supporting others toward the common purpose of ensuring equality, opportunity, and inclusion for everyone.

Which famous person, dead or alive, would you want to spend the day with? Jesus Christ. I’d love to hang out with him as Father and son. Do some fishing, play disc-golf, take him to lunch, watch him while he’s playing with children. Make it about him.

What is something you believed early in your career that you don’t believe now? Most of your problems will be a result of thinking when you should be feeling, and vice-versa. Pause, reflect, deliberate, be present. Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you.

What is your management philosophy? Managing by walking around, intending to facilitate

improvements in morale, a sense of purpose, productivity, and total quality management of the organization. And showing-rather than merely telling-what to do.

How do you define success personally? Faithfully using the gifts and talents God has given me to serve the common good. Arriving at a state of mind that’s calm, patient, confident about the future, yet not attached to outcomes or desperately struggling to get to my destination.

What do you find appealing about your job? Bountiful opportunity to work for a diverse clientele, with talented, inspirational people, and to continuously evolve my practice of law.

Favorite cause or charity and why? The Native American Rights Fund, because, as set forth in its mission statement, it fights to protect Native American rights, resources, and lifeways through litigation, legal advocacy, and legal expertise.

MARY VANDENACK BRIDGES WELLNESS AND LAW

Some people know Mary E. Vandenack because of her expertise as CEO and founding partner of Vandenack Weaver Truhlsen, a law firm that specializes in tax, trust and estates, and business. Others know her for her expertise in mind/body areas of fitness and wellness; she is Yoga Alliance RYT-200 and ACE-certified, Power Pilates-certified, and earned a Specialization in Foundation of Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. And now she’s pursuing professional counseling credentials. These passions may look disparate on the surface, but Vandenack sees connectedness.

“I’ve always made jokes about the fact that I should have a counseling degree, because in trust and estate work we’re dealing with family, death, money, taxes; it’s pretty personal,” she said, adding that helping people is at the core of everything. “I like to use ‘well-being’ versus ‘wellness,’ because I think ‘well-being’ reflects the whole person whereas ‘wellness,’ people think it’s just about health.”

Vandenack’s affinity for both law and well-being initially led her to pursue them as separate interests, but over time she’s found increasing overlap, such as teaching mindfulness or yoga sessions at legal conferences. She’s

written two columns for metroMAGAZINE (a sister publication of Midlands Business Journal) for years: “Planning Matters,” featuring legal content with Vandenack Weaver Truhlsen; and “metroSPIRIT,” focused on well-being. More recently, the law firm added life care planning to its services.

“We actually have care managers who are health care professionals who help clients connect the dots between their estate plans and their actual health care needs,” she explained, adding that this comes into play when clients are creating a trust and will and power of attorney for health care is discussed. “We have a process that we do for clients that involves reviewing their, what we call, incapacity planning. The trust and will apply when you’re dead, right? But most people care a little bit more about ‘if I’m still alive, but I’m really sick,’ or ‘if I get Alzheimer’s.’”

For instance, if a client is aging and wants to designate an assisted living facility for later, a care manager can assist with that planning, Vandenack said. Or if a client has no immediate family, a care manager that individual find a recuperation facility to recover from surgery.

“We help them find what they need to take care of their health care or their financial [concerns]. So, we have relationships with trust departments

and accountants who can step in and help them if they get to where they can’t do things on their own,” Vandenack said. “We’re still primarily a law firm, but we’re really passionate about aging, and the baby boomer population is aging … And another thing we’ve been fairly involved with in recent years is support of veterans and trying to provide more veteran services.”

Vandenack’s firm has always supported nonprofits like American Cancer Society and American Heart Association. This work helped introduce Vandenack to the concept of life care services and familiarized her with other health-related support to which the firm’s attorneys can refer clients.

“We kind of keep an inventory of services in the community,” Vandenack said.

The Vandenack Weaver Truhlsen team is also looking at ways to broaden its reach even further.

“We feel like we’re really connecting the dots between the legal world and the health care world by having something in between that helps people,” she said. “We actually want to take that national, so we’ve been working for the last two years on developing a national affiliation of attorneys — who are like-minded and have similar skills — who are going to offer a high level

of service and quality to clients, but also add the life care planning and some expanded tech services to reach more customers.”

This includes the imminent launch of an online estate planning tool to make those services more accessible and affordable, especially to unmarried women and other underserved groups, Vandenack said.

Well-being extends to the law firm’s culture, too, Vandenack said, and she strives to cultivate a positive atmosphere for everyone.

“It’s hugely important to set an example for them, whether it’s men or women, on what I call well-being, because there’s a high rate of burnout in this profession … well-being is one of our core values here at the firm,” she said. “I like people to find the joy in it that I have … I really do love what I do … I really feel that I helped a lot of people with what I do. But if I don’t take care of myself, first and foremost, I can’t help my clients. And I can’t help others that work for me.”

She added, “I was so blessed to find a career that I’m passionate about, where I feel like I really do make a difference. I guess not everybody has that. But if I were to be able to give everyone a gift, it would be to have a career that they’re as passionate about as me.”

WOMEN IN business

Building a Legacy

WOMEN BUSINESS LEADERS SHAPE LOCAL INDUSTRIES

DR. ORLANDA WHITFIELD

AUTUMN PRUITT OWNER, HARDY COFFEE CO.

YEARWOOD ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST/PUBLIC INFORMATION SPECIALIST, SBA

As a direct result of their drive and work ethic, many women business leaders in the community have achieved great success over the years. They say there are a number of actions that have helped them to navigate challenges and attain favorable outcomes.

Making Their Mark

Successful entrepreneurship begins with understanding what matters.

Jeana Goosmann, CEO and managing partner of Goosmann Law Firm, said being a leader means knowing what is worth it to you, to your business, to your clients and to your team.

“You have to be confident to go all in on what you are setting out to do to achieve your goals,” Goosmann said. “As a business leader, you must be ready to take those risks that others are not willing to take. You must be bold and stand strong in your decisions so

you can execute.”

Dr. Orlanda Whitfield, owner of Still Poppin Gourmet Popcorn, simply states, stay true to yourself.

“Your product, idea, and business is you,” Whitfield said. “There could be similar businesses or ideas, but your passion and dedication to your business is what sets you apart.”

To aspiring entrepreneurs, Whitfield cautions that there will be hard days, but it’s important to keep going and

remain optimistic. When help or guidance is needed, having a mentor can also be a great source of support.

“It is important to build connections and network with other business owners,” Whitfield said. “It is also important for you to understand your ‘why.’ Why are you building this business?

“My reason is to build a legacy. My goal is to take lessons from my grandmother to create a legacy for my

granddaughters. Take the leap, have the courage to pursue your dreams. You are the magic you need to make it happen.”

For Autumn Pruitt, owner of Hardy Coffee Co., the advice to other aspiring business owners is simple: don’t go it alone. In the first several years of business, she described a heads-down mentality.

“The work we did was in the four walls of the shop and while I connected well with my team and customers, I often felt very alone in the decisions I made and work I did as CEO,” Pruitt said. “Starting a business is really hard. Leadership is really hard. And if you think it’s not supposed to be,

you can become pretty convinced that you’re doing it wrong.”

It wasn’t until she started connecting with other women in similar roles that some of that anxiety lifted.

“Sometimes these women had good advice, but most of the time it was simply spending time together and knowing we were solving similar problems,” Pruitt said.

Trading Hats

Each and every day can look different for a business owner, which is why perseverance and patience are key to navigating unpredictability.

Goosmann said her days are always

a mashup between her CEO and attorney duties.

“I meet with clients, help them identify their goals, make strategies to execute those goals and deliver

by delegating to the right team members at the firm and following up,” Goosmann said. “For the firm, I am the visionary and regularly cast the vision

for the firm’s goals for the next year, three years and 10 years. Our executive and leadership teams meet quarterly to review our initiatives and push toward our big goals.”

Goosmann holds regular one-onone meetings with direct reports and coaches the team. She also reviews the dashboard, identifies issues and provides resources.

“I’m also our lead brand ambassador, do public relations and leadership recruiting,” Goosmann said.

Whitfield said her day begins early, but she enjoys the peace and quiet an early start offers. She uses the time to meditate and exercise before starting her workday. She creates a daily task list of things that need to be completed or followed up on.

“I do these things before starting my full-time job,” Whitfield said. “I look for pop-up events we can attend and I check in with staff at our storefront to see if there are any special requests.”

In the evening, she heads to the commercial kitchen at No More Empty Pots with her sister Dionne, daughter, Tylona, and son, Fonta, where they make popcorn.

Being very intentional with her time is important, which is why Whitfield is sure to schedule moments to read and learn during each day.

“I believe as I grow my business will grow as well,” Whitfield said. “Some days are longer than others but I’m grateful.”

With so many team members, Pruitt said she is working to do less and lead more. She plans out ideal weeks, but each week can still be vastly different — which she said can be frustrating and/or enjoyable.

“Just last week, I had a quarterly planning meeting, a weekly meeting with my bookkeeper and one-on-one with all of my direct reports,” Pruitt said. “I also decorated a cake and took pictures of our Thanksgiving offerings to post online. I drafted the weekly newsletter, packaged coffee, made a catering delivery, placed orders for wholesale equipment and started sampling drinks for the winter drink menu. It’s a mixed bag.”

Success Takes Time

Growth doesn’t happen overnight; instead, it’s an-going process.

Goosmann, who started her firm in 2009, said the firm has now grown to become the largest women owned law firm in the Midwest. In 2015, the firm became certified by Women Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) and became a member of the National Association of Minority and WomenOwned Law Firms (NAMWOLF).

“My business is only as strong as the people I have on my team,” Goosmann said. “Our firm is comprised of hard-working talented attorneys and team members who are devoted to our mission to serve our clients. Goosmann Law helps business leaders win disputes, protect their wealth and do

Since opening the doors of Still Poppin in 2016, the business has increased its output and sales yearly. The goal is to continue to grow organically, according to Whitfield, who continuously looks for ways to connect with the business’ target market.

Still Poppin’s fundraising program continues to grow, as well, which Whitfield said is rewarding because she enjoys helping teams and organizations reach their fundraising goals.

“Our future outlook is bright,” Whitfield said. “We will continue to grow by opening a second location in Omaha and eventually a store in another city. We will take our time. It’s a marathon not a sprint.”

Since Pruitt and her husband, Luke, started the bakery piece of their business in 2010, it has grown exponentially.

“It now also includes a coffee roasting lab, three cafes and one drivethru in Omaha while serving wholesale accounts across the region,” Pruitt said. “We currently have 65 employees.”

Staying Relevant

Woman-owned small businesses are a vital part of Nebraska’s economic landscape, making up 43% of Nebraska’s 182,000 businesses. Women business owners have always faced traditional challenges, like lack of access to capital and balancing their businesses and family lives.

Elizabeth Yearwood, economic development specialist/public

information specialist for U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), said that even as businesses are starting to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, challenges like inflation and supply chain disruptions are now hitting businesses hard.

“It’s more important than ever

for women entrepreneurs to take advantage of the free support and assistance that is available in Nebraska — support that the SBA and our resource partners are happy to provide,” Yearwood said.

Women’s Business Center and owner of The Business Connection, said women of color are ramping up their skills to be successful in business. She has noticed more women seeking knowledge on QuickBooks, business planning, understanding financials and how to build credit.

“I’m also seeing different businesses collaborating with each other and

offering each other’s products and services to their clients,” Clark said.

There are various resources available to women business owners in Nebraska. There are two Women Business Centers (WBCs) in Nebraska — the Omaha-based GROW Nebraska WBC and the Grand Island based Center for Rural Affairs WBC. According to Yearwood, both of these

organizations offer free business assistance to women entrepreneurs and business owners. This assistance is wide-ranging and can include receiving help with writing a business plan or developing a strategy to pivot the business by adding additional revenue streams.

Another resource from the SBA is an online learning platform geared

towards women called Ascent.

“Ascent is a multi-media, selfpaced approach towards small business education,” Yearwood said.

“Ascent is designed for busy women entrepreneurs. Business ownership can be non-stop. Ascent offers an easy and convenient way for women to build the skills that they need to become even

“If in a career, we show them there’s no ceiling, just go, do and be you and excel to the seat you desire,” Clark said. “We show them that they have the power to accept or make any changes they want to have a successful career.”

While every woman business owner has their own story and obstacles to overcome, they all share a common mission — fueling the business industry and paving the way for future generations.

Working parents face a unique set of daily challenges, but local mom Kellee Mikuls has made it her mission to ensure that finding child care isn’t one of them. In July 2020 Mikuls launched the first iteration of Swishboom, a mobile app that connects families to babysitters. Since then, the app has facilitated over 10,000 hours of babysitting and roughly $150,000 of fees for babysitters in the Omaha area alone. Today, the app has thousands of users nationwide.

The Lightbulb Moment

Mikuls said the concept was initially born out of a need to solve one of her own problems — finding a babysitter quickly.

At the time, Mikuls worked as a real estate broker which required many hours of networking. The mom of three continuously struggled to find a babysitter until one day when her mother-in-law, who works at Creighton University, suggested sending a mass text to a list of several medical students. In the text, Mikuls included details like the day, time and pay for the babysitting job. She received a response instantly.

“That was my lightbulb moment,” Mikuls said. “I knew what was needed: a broadcast system of jobs that would be sent to a group of trustworthy and capable sitters.”

With that notion in mind, Mikuls joined The Startup Collaborative and began developing a product with the intent to make lives easier for families.

How it works

Users can download the app for free and book sitters using their personal network at no cost. Those who do not have a network can tap into the app’s verified network of 100+ sitters in the Omaha area for a monthly subscription of $7.99.

On average, jobs are claimed within five minutes. Most sitters are in college, while some are single or stay-at-home moms looking to make an extra income for their families.

According to Mikuls, one of the factors that makes Swishboom different from other options is its five-step verification process, which includes making reference calls, checking sex offender registries, checking social media, performing a name and email check and calling potential sitters to discuss the app’s standards.

“We use human verification, meaning that every single family and sitter is verified by a real human on our team before they can post or accept a job,” Mikuls said. “This keeps the app safe and helps both parents and sitters have confidence that the other person is trustworthy. It is more

labor intensive than a simple background check, but we have found that it helps the jobs get claimed quicker.”

Altering The Industry

As the cost of hiring a babysitter continues to increase and the weight of finding child care becomes more noticeable to all, Mikuls said Swishboom is changing the narrative.

The founder said she’s also noticed that there’s a strong willingness to work from college students.

“They like using Swishboom because it’s more of an on-demand job instead of a traditional schedule with set hours,” Mikuls said. “They can go on the app and claim jobs that fit their schedules.”

The startup ecosystem remains strong in Nebraska, which opens up even more possibilities for the app.

“There are a lot of local startups that have really paved the way to major success,” Mikuls said. “Swishboom could be next because we’ve gotten great support through the Greater Omaha Chamber and from former founders of successful companies that have sold for a lot of money who are willing to work to be advisors at no cost because they want to see Swishboom grow.”

Mikuls said Omaha is one of the best places to raise a family in the country, and a fam-tech company like Swishboom is helping to put Omaha on the map.

What Comes Next

Upon reaching 6,000 subscriptions in Omaha, Mikuls said the next step is to launch the app in other cities. Additionally, once upcoming fundraising is underway, the plan is to hire three to five new employees. Currently, Swishboom is also working with some local employers on adding the app as an employee benefit.

“It’s heartwarming to see that in Omaha — where everyone says is a great place to raise a family — employers are helping families find child care,” Mikuls said. “It shows that employers really value their employees and recognize that finding child care is a lot for parents.”

Mikuls said it’s been rewarding to see families continue to use the app for their babysitter needs. She equally enjoys knowing that the app allows sitters to support themselves or their families.

“As a mom who has been in the corporate world, I understand what it’s like to try to grow your career and also try to be present for your family,” Mikuls said.

“It feels like you’re being tugged in both directions. However, the app is a tool that allows people to stay in their careers while supporting their own mental health by going out and having a social life, too. The impact that the app has had on families and sitters so far has been really powerful for me.”

It’s a curious twist of fate when something as destructive as a global pandemic opens the door to helping people, but that’s just the reality in which Heartland Workforce Solutions (HWS) finds itself.

The nonprofit, which focuses on strengthening Nebraska’s workforce, has long seen the need for a physical presence in South Omaha and now is getting one, thanks to federal funding directly as a result of COVID-19.

HWS recently received $600,000 via the Omaha American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Community Grant Program. The money, which will be used to give HWS permanent building space in South Omaha, is part of the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan Act. Signed by President Joe Biden last spring, ARPA funds provided direct support to citizens in the form of stimulus payments as well as assisted state, county and city governments in recovering from the effects of the pandemic.

Help Where Needed

“South Omaha has been disproportionately affected by the pandemic and a lot of folks there are experiencing challenges in employment,” said HWS Executive Director Erin Porterfield. “One thing we know is meatpacking plants and other food production services didn’t stop working through the pandemic. As a result, workers there were disproportionately affected by illness, by childcare issues, by school closure issues, everything.

“We also know that folks in South Omaha ZIP codes are also lower income, some experiencing poverty, some experiencing lower graduation rates from high school. Not only that, but you also have some folks who are still second language learners, from Spanish to English. That poses additional challenges.”

HWS’ new resource center will bring a variety of job- and career-related services to the community, among them offering support for job searches, resumé assistance, interviewing skills, occupation and career path awareness, referral to workforce

partner programs, employer education and hosting recruiting events.

Boots on the Ground

Stan Odenthal, HWS director of business relations, said having a physical presence helps the organization be more responsive, both to employment challenges and opportunities, by leveraging applicants’ current skills and training them for better-paying positions.

“Having that access point in the neighborhood matters; Something close by that individuals can come to and get connected with resources in the right language,” he said. “We know that in and around South Omaha there are a lot of great jobs, but there’s also a lot of jobs that pay on the lower scale of things.

“One of the things we think is a fantastic opportunity in South Omaha is not only reaching those individuals and connecting them with jobs as they walk through our center, but also helping upskill individuals and then getting them connected with the middle- and high-skill jobs that pay more.”

Porterfield said the organization has already identified a property – a 10,000-square-foot, build-to-suit location – which HWS is leasing from Canopy South. She said several organizations are also lining up to work out of the new resource center.

“We have a number of our workforce system partners who are saying ‘I want space, I want space,’” she said. “We are identifying right now with the architect how that space will play out so that we can understand how many folks can work there at any one time.”

Matching Workers to Jobs

The volume of people needing help to find work seems incongruous with headlines screaming about the scarcity of labor over the past two years. However, Odenthal said, this only underscores how nuanced the issue of employment is among certain populations.

“You look at the unemployment rate and you see it’s like 1.9% for Nebraska, which is lowest in the country. Omaha is a little bit higher, but not by much,” he said. “Even with that low unemployment rate, we’re still seeing a ton of people. On a typical Monday, we’ll have 120 people walking through our doors. All of those individuals, on some level, are looking for employment.

“The reality is, there are a lot of individuals who are still looking for employment or looking for better employment. They’re looking for good opportunities to grow within an organization. Those are some of the topics of conversation we have with businesses. How can you make the hiring process a little easier on the job applicant? How can you get more people through the door?”

Porterfield agreed, saying local companies must understand how to strategically position themselves as an employer of choice, something with which HWS is happy to assist.

“When we hear folks say, ‘I’ve got all these jobs available, why don’t people want to work?’ That’s an important conversation,” she said. “In reality, people are working more than ever and sometimes more jobs than what’s healthy for them and their family. Right now, businesses have a great opportunity to get the right culture together to access the talent that they need to grow. But it’s going to take some education and some flexibility on their part.”

LINDSAY TETTENBORN BUILDS SUPPORT SYSTEM AT UNION PACIFIC

Whether professionally or in her free time, Lindsay Tettenborn loves to help others and give them the support they need to be successful.

“I love people, and I love to help,” she said. “Valuing relationships, building diverse teams and accepting people for the experiences and knowledge they bring to the table goes a long way.”

Her ability to support others through daily challenges and focus on teambuilding at Union Pacific led her to her current role as senior director, operations support.

Tettenborn grew up in Omaha and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she studied advertising and journalism. Before graduating, she took an internship with Union Pacific in its corporate relations group, driving back and forth between Omaha and Lincoln.

After graduating, Tettenborn took a full-time position with Union Pacific in the marketing and sales department before moving back to the corporate relations group. For the past 16 years, Tettenborn has worked at the company, moving into various positions.

“It’s an honor to work at Union Pacific,” she said. “The railroad is a part of our country’s history and today it continues to serve, delivering everything we need to live our daily lives. I’ve always felt valued at the railroad, and encouraged to challenge the status quo, while never being afraid of failure.”

Tettenborn’s team supports the railroad’s engineering managers and works to find quick solutions to problems that arise.

“Our team works extremely hard to create and maintain a culture where people can come to work as their authentic selves,” she said. “In our meetings, there is an obligation to question what we’re doing and why we’re doing it. I say a million times ‘I don’t want you to tell me what I want to hear. I’m asking you to tell me what you think.’ That alone has led to some great conversation that’s produced fantastic outcomes for the railroad.”

In whatever projects Tettenborn is working on, she aims to always add value to Union Pacific and to support the members of the company in any way she can.

“I don’t want there to be any question about the value my team brings to the railroad,” she said. “When you provide value and think outside the box, people look to you to help solve problems.”

Work/Life Balance

Despite her successes at Union Pacific, Tettenborn said her greatest accomplishment is her family.

“I have an extremely supportive husband and four children ages 9, 7, 3 and 2,” she said. “I’m most proud that my son and three daughters see how hard I work personally and professionally. I want to set a good example that you can do both. It’s not easy, but you can do it.”

While being a working mom presents many challenges, Tettenborn has learned how to manage it all over the years and advance her career while also creating a loving household.

“It’s ages and stages,” she said. “I’ll never declare victory. It’s never perfect. I think every year things change, and you just adapt, and you learn how to make it happen.”

Having a community of support from her coworkers has helped Tettenborn when overcoming these obstacles. After returning from maternity leave after the birth of her fourth child, Tettenborn was given the opportunity to transition to a new position. Although the transition was difficult at first, Tettenborn’s team helped her through it.

“You’ve been at the railroad for a number of years, and challenged, at times, to lead teams whose business is completely unfamiliar,” she said. “Those experiences continue to teach me to trust my team. They’re the ones that do the work. And so really, I work for them. My job is to make their life better, so that they provide the best product possible.”

Tettenborn hopes to provide a good pathway for women entering the workforce and to create a community in which they feel empowered to work any job they want regardless of anything standing in their way.

She also hopes to continue to be a good role model for her kids and to raise them to show compassion towards others.

“I hope to make a difference by being kind and inclusive. [And] honestly, I want to raise children who are all inclusive and try to set that example daily,” she said.

New Giving Tuesday Fund

SPARKING SUPPORT FOR LOCAL NONPROFITS

SHARE Omaha and SHARE Iowa are partner organizations dedicated to helping nonprofits fulfill their missions by inspiring more support and service. They are raising the excitement around upcoming Giving Tuesday events, along with the number of donations in the Omaha metro and western Iowa, with a new bonus fund this Giving Tuesday, November 29, 2022.

Many local business leaders have already contributed to the bonus fund, with a leading gift from Omaha Steaks.

“We all care about our community,” said Omaha Steaks Chairman and CEO Todd Simon. “Expanding the interest and excitement around giving back is our collective responsibility as local leaders.”

Participating nonprofits on Giving Tuesday can tap into the bonus fund, which helps to incentivize individual givers and encourages new donations. Nonprofits will receive a percentage of the total bonus fund equivalent to the percentage

of donors who give, rather than the amount of dollars raised, up to 10% of the total fund. Bonus dollars empower donors who give in smaller amounts by allowing them to boost the impact of their donation.

Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving. In this region, it’s the biggest giving day of the year and the most significant opportunity to raise support for more than 700 local nonprofits — generating $5.5 million for organizations in

2021. To maintain, if not surpass, this level of community investment, the bonus fund will elevate the metro-wide campaign even further on November 29.

If your business would like to support the 2022 Giving Tuesday Bonus Fund in support of the metro area’s nonprofits, contact Marjorie Maas at marjorie@shareomaha.org, or for Iowabased businesses, Donna Dostal at ddostal@ givewesterniowa.org.

MEDICAL BREAKTHROUGHS LEAD TO REGIONAL ECONOMIC

More than 100 attendees gathered at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) in October to learn about Nebraska’s contribution and leadership in the bioscience and medtech industries. The Innovate Conference, hosted by the Greater Omaha Chamber, Bio Nebraska, Omaha Public Power District and UNeMed, put a spotlight on the many Nebraska-based medical breakthroughs and unique opportunities that have propelled advancements in public health, patient outcomes and commercial patents.

“Nebraska is a global leader in medical technology and bioscience innovation,” said Dr. Michael Dixon, president and CEO of UNeMed, the technology transfer and commercialization office for UNMC. “The research done here impacts the health and wellness of people across the world. We often think of Nebraska as an integral part of the agribusiness ecosystem, but our contributions to biotech cannot be overstated.”

The Innovate Conference featured a keynote from Dr. Jim Linder, CEO of Nebraska Medicine and founder of Linseed Capital. Several panel discussions covered medtech startup companies in Nebraska, opportunities for venture capital and economic development considerations for expansion and growth. There were also VIP tours of UNMC’s Davis Global Center, iExcel and National Quarantine Center.

“These one-of-kind research and innovation centers are a crown jewel for the life science cluster we’re building here in Omaha,” said Mark Norman, senior director of business attraction and expansion for the Greater Omaha Chamber. “The Innovate Nebraska conference was a great opportunity for us to connect the amazing breakthroughs being made in Nebraska with business leaders who can help bring those innovations to market

The Greater Omaha Chamber hosted the 4th annual Conference on Opportunity, Diversity and Equity on Thursday, October 6. The Conference was held at the CHI Health Center and in-person for the first time since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I was impressed by not only the turnout, but the active participation by all attendees at this year’s Conference. The people that showed up at the CHI

After acquiring the Little King franchise operation in 2021, Lockwood Development is announcing that the firm’s first Omaha Little King store opened to the public on November 1, with a Grand Opening featuring the Creighton Volleyball team scheduled for Saturday, November 5.

The store, located at 8602 West Dodge Road, represents a step forward for both the brand and its footprint in the Omaha area.

“Our new store is very close to where the very first Little King store was located when it opened in 1969,” said Chip James, president and CEO of Lockwood Development. “That’s no coincidence. We’re truly inspired by the roots of this historic franchise, and we look forward to carrying that spirit forward to loyal Little King customers, as well as a new generation of Omaha residents.”

The 1500-square-foot store combines modern design and an inviting dining area with classic Little King branding and artwork. Customers can expect to order from Little King’s beloved menu featuring subs and sandwiches made with bread baked in store and fresh-sliced meat, as well as soups and desserts, while taking advantage of a variety of conveniences, including a drive-thru.

Day to day operations at the 86th and Dodge location, as well as the operation of Lockwood Development’s subsequent stores, wil l be overseen by Mark Edwards, an Omaha native who grew up in the fast-food business.

“It’s an honor to merge the industry I’m passionate about with a brand that means a great deal to me and so many families in Om aha,” said Edwards. “Little King has more than 50 years of rich history in our area, and now we get the opportunity to move it forward, modernize it, and highlight the very best of what it has to offer.”

The new store is the first in a series of new locations James, Edwards, and the team at Lockwood Development plan to open in Omaha and Lincoln.

About Little King
