WHO’S WHO IN LOCAL BUSINESSES
DIRECTOR OF CLINICAL SERVICES, ADMINISTRATOR, QLI
Michala Witas
ASSOCIATIONS/TITLES: SACRED HEART MENTOR PROGRAM. OVER A TWO-YEAR PERIOD, I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH A MIDDLESCHOOL STUDENT TO GIVE HER EXPOSURE TO DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF PROFESSIONAL LIFE. HOMETOWN: BELLEVUE, NEBRASKA EDUCATION: SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY, BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN EXERCISE SCIENCE AND MASTER’S DEGREE IN PHYSICAL THERAPY How I got into the business: I pursued a degree in physical therapy because of an interest in sports medicine and pediatrics. I had no idea how challenging and fulfilling a career in neurological rehabilitation would be. I heard QLI was a great place to work, so I thought, “I’ll work there for a little bit and then move on.” That was almost 17 years ago. Accomplishments or milestones: In 2009, I received QLI’s highest corporate honor — the James P. O’Donnell Demonstrated Excellence Award — a peer-selected recognition celebrating team members who show an overwhelming commitment to QLI’s mission. Last year, I accepted the role of QLI Administrator, which is a specialized leadership position that oversees all regulatory compliance for our growing clinical and long-term care services. I am one of six leaders at QLI that led the organization in navigating COVID-19. First job: Detassling corn. I was also an usher at Rosenblatt Stadium. Biggest career break: I can’t say that I’ve had a big career “break.” My career has been an organic path to where I am today. The toughest part of the job: In 2020, a few others and I were asked to step up and lead the COVID response efforts at QLI. It has been such a huge learning curve. It is a mammoth responsibility, staying up to date
with the latest information and implementing plans to keep our staff and residents safe. The best advice I have received: “Fix the problem, not the blame.” About my family: I’ve been married to my husband, Dennis, for 14 years. We have four kids — Dylan, 11; Harper, 9; Hadley, 6; and Aiden, 4. How my business will change in the next decade: In our industry, the unpredictability of the insurance coverage and Medicaid funding challenges us to get creative about how we deliver life-changing rehabilitation and care in the short time we are allowed. It’s necessary to find innovative ways to work around obstacles. Mentor who has helped the most in my career: I truly have had the opportunity to know and work with a lot of strong, independent women who have pushed me. At QLI, that is, hands-down, our CEO, Patricia Kearns. Outside interests: I love coaching sports. Running is a great outlet. I spent time in Spain and Nicaragua, and that travel expanded my worldview. It is important to my husband and I that our children also grow up with a well-rounded perspective of the world.
Favorite vacation spot: Australia. When I went, I was a young professional. Sydney had that young professional vibe and the entire country offers such natural beauty. Other careers I would like to try: I have always been interested in our political system. Favorite cause or charity: Beyond QLI, I really believe in the mission of CUES School System. Education is the solution to so many issues and CUES offers a program to students and families who need it. Favorite app: BBC News.

We always had a growth mindset and always envisioned growing and being successful. - MARANDA ADAMS, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT, BLAIR FREEMAN

AS FOUNDERS OF BLAIR FREEMAN, THE ONLY 100% WOMAN-OWNED AND MINORITYOWNED CLASS A CONTRACTOR IN THE STATE, ASHLEY KUHN AND MARANDA ADAMS ARE BEGINNING TO CHANGE THE FACE OF THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY.
Building Change
BLAIR FREEMAN STANDS OUT IN MALE-DOMINATED CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY
The Blair Freeman logo’s pinkish-purple, traditionally feminine accent color suggests that this construction company is different from its peers. The owners wanted a strong, contemporary icon with a hue that none of their competitors were using, but it’s fitting in another way: Blair Freeman is the only 100% woman-owned and minority-owned Class A contractor in Nebraska. And in a male-dominated industry, the majority of its 28-member team is female. Blair Freeman provides a full spectrum of services to commercial and residential clients, and also has a team of real estate agents that operates under the brokerage house Nebraska Realty as Blair Freeman Home. They never set out to hire women over men when they founded the company in 2018, President Ashley Kuhn and Executive Vice President Maranda Adams said. “When we started our company, we said we wanted the best candidates,” Kuhn said, explaining that women in the industry took notice and came to them. “Our company gives that safe place for growth, so people naturally gravitate.” “Ashley and I embrace the fact that we are women leaders, and people do see us. And it’s inspiring because we’re in a male-dominated field,” Adams added. “Women see that and are drawn to that. We’re thankful that we have some amazingly talented people on our team and that they thought enough of us to share those talents with our company.
The company name comes from the women’s family names; Kuhn was Ashley Freeman before marriage and Adams was Maranda Blair. “We dialed back to our maiden names because it’s a woman-owned business and we wanted to pay homage to that,” Kuhn said. “It’s the legacy, it’s the history,” Adams added. Family is also part of a vision reflecting both women’s belief that a focus on humanity is paramount in business, Kuhn said. “We always think from a people-first mentality and our core values are really surrounded around people,” she explained. “If you put people in the position to succeed, the business naturally is going to also succeed.”
We can do this Kuhn has a bachelor’s degree in real estate land-use economics and investment finance and spent nearly 14 years in real estate development. Adams’ bachelor’s degree is in business administration, management and operations, and she has experience in the banking and finance industry as well as starting a real estate investment company with her husband in 2010.
Page 7 • November 5, 2021
“That was where we started doing residential real estate and investing in renovations,” Adams said. The couple purchased a historic North Omaha building with the intention of starting a business in 2018, but the restoration was a nightmare project. Costs skyrocketed, the contractor jumped ship and work that did get done was subpar. Adams reached out to Kuhn, who she knew from their student years at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, to help salvage the investment. The problem project was their first collaboration and launched Blair Freeman.
“The biggest differentiator is that Maranda and I have sat on the owner’s side of the table… We’ve felt how it feels to sit across from your contractor or whoever you’re using and hear them tell you they’re behind schedule or over budget or you’re not going to get the project you wanted because of X. And you really just don’t have any control and you maybe really didn’t understand why, but you kind of have to just eat it,” Kuhn said. “Most folks in the construction industry have just been on the side where they’re telling the news. We’ve been there, and our goal is for someone to never to sit across from us and feel out of control on their project.”
With their formidable skills and experience, the pair was optimistic from the start “I reached out to Ashley because she was on the commercial development side, that Blair Freeman would eventually take off, Kuhn said. They didn’t expect it to and we put our heads together and figured it out. Going though that process fly so high so fast, however. made us realize that there are probably a lot of people out there running into some of the same challenges and same roadblocks. And how many are just “I don’t think we could have ever anticipated that our community and our saying, ‘I’m not going to do it anymore,’ and they throw in the towel? They don’t have resources and somebody in their corner to help them navigate that,” network would be so intentional about making sure we were considered for work right out of the gate and eliminate a lot of the barriers that would prohibit Adams said. “So then it was like, ‘We can do this. We can be those people and companies from being able to scale at the pace that we have,” Kuhn said. that company.’”
Both sides of the table It’s not just being woman-owned that distinguishes Blair Freeman, Kuhn said.
“We always had a growth mindset and always envisioned growing and being successful,” Adams said. “We were surprised at the rate at which it did grow… and how quickly it started happening.”

You definitely have to know what you’re talking about when you’re walking into a room; you have to be the smartest and you have to show up a little bit more intentionally than men do. - ASHLEY KUHN, PRESIDENT, BLAIR FREEMAN
They strive to create a positive, even fun, company culture and make a good leadership team, Kuhn said. “We balance each other well.” “We approach things with a very similar mindset, we’re doers, we get the job done … We’re like-minded in our goals, our vision and what we want for the company. I’m a big people person. Ashley always says I give people grace and that I’m the sweet one,” Adams said, adding, with a chuckle: “And she calls herself ‘the hammer.’” Kuhn said that as a relative newcomer with an unusual makeup, Blair Freeman doesn’t sit still with “the way we’ve always done it” explanations. “On the path up, we’ve ran into so many barriers that don’t make sense. I always call us the ‘disrupters,’ pausing to ask why — ‘Why do we do this this way? Why are these requirements here? Why, why, why, why, why?’ — and requiring somebody to come to the table with an answer and requiring somebody to eliminate barriers that don’t make sense. There are so many systemic things that just don’t make sense,” she said, adding that much of the time, “If you run it back … it’s tied to something to keep women out of the industry, or people of color.”
Above and beyond Business is booming, Kuhn said, proving that she and Adams are succeeding in a competitive industry. “There are still people that think it’s a man’s world and that the only people who could possibly know what’s going on are men,” she said. “And so you definitely have to know what you’re talking about when you’re walking into a room; you have to be the smartest and you have to show up a little bit more intentionally than men do … you are constantly having to re-prove that you know what you’re talking about.” “We have been really well-received in our community, so it’s not often, but sometimes people do second-guess or question. So it feels like we do have to go just a little bit above, just a little bit beyond, because we’re women and we’re Black women,” Adams said. “But once we get in the room and people see who we are and what we do well, it dissipates from there.” They are already starting to change the face of the industry. “Our overall goal has always been to be one of the larger construction companies in the world,” Kuhn said. “I think you can have a paradigm shift if you can get a woman-owned construction company to be one of the largest in the world.”

LEAVING A LASTING MARK ON INDUSTRIES AND COMMUNITIES BY MICHELLE LEACH
It’s a male-dominated industry and, much like other male-dominated fields, women have to prove themselves to be taken seriously. - LAURIE HELLBUSCH, OWNER, SPIRIT WORLD
The Midlands area-based women who have “blazed trails” in their respective industries haven’t been content in doing so; they have gone on to launch a variety of spin-off ventures,
support organizations and networking platforms, among other innovative offerings, to inspire other leaders and professionals, and to elevate the communities they serve and call “home.”

When then-30-year-old Laurie Hellbusch first bought Spirit World, the previous owner said he thought he’d never sell the business to a woman. “He didn’t think a woman could be successful, because they wouldn’t be strong enough to stand up to the wholesalers,” she said. “I had a different perspective and took the approach of working with our wholesalers, instead of trying to be combative with them.” With that being said, Hellbusch had to work harder than her male counterparts to be taken seriously. “I have a manager here who does a lot of our wine and spirits buying,” she said. “When supplier reps come in to pitch their products, they almost always give their attention to him first and disregard me. He kindly points out that I’m the owner and I sign the checks, and then they include me in the discussion. But it typically takes him pointing that out for them to take me seriously.” Some other things remain the same, as well. “Most women that have entered the industry have done so on the wholesale side — selling to retailers, bars and restaurants,” she explained. “But very few retail owners were female. That has changed a little over the

years. There are a few other female wine store owners in our area.” To Hellbusch’s knowledge, Spirit World is the only 100% female-owner and -operated spirits store in the area. “It’s a male-dominated industry and, much like other male-dominated fields, women have to prove themselves to be taken seriously,” she said. Those women who are in the industry have made an imprint. “I am one of the founding board members of Omaha Whiskey Fest, an event for whiskey lovers to sample and learn about over 300 whiskies from around the world and to promote Omaha as an important whiskey market,” Hellbusch said. “We will have our second event in February with over 1,500 attendees.” She also started Coalition of Retailers of Nebraska (CORN), an alliance of locally owned, independent spirits retailers. “The purpose of CORN is to collectively increase the impact of independent stores within our market,” Hellbusch said. Additionally, Hellbusch founded Women and Whiskey, a group for women enthusiasts or those interested in the industry to connect and grow in their knowledge. Furthermore, numerous Spirit World employees have gone on to grow their careers in the industry. “I’ve had several former employees come back and say because they started at Spirit World, they gained the knowledge and experience they needed to get a job with a wholesaler, supplier, or elsewhere, and they credit Spirit World for getting them where they needed to be to succeed,” she said.

LEAVING A LASTING MARK ON INDUSTRIES AND COMMUNITIES The thread through my work is ‘economic liberation.’ What does it mean to have power and choice? In order to do that, I think about the systems in which we operate. And these systems were not built for me. So, let’s build a new system. - ASHLEI SPIVEY, ENTREPRENEUR
“I don’t get upset when an employee moves on for something bigger and better. I consider it a success when we have given someone the skills that they need to advance their career.”
Defying categorization
Readers will probably recognize the name “Ashlei Spivey” from any one of her entrepreneurial and leadership roles within the community. In part, Spivey founded I Be Black Girl (IBBG), as a collective for “Black women, femmes and girls to grow, give, connect and take action.” She also launched and owns the successful (and expanding) Best Burger
alongside life and business partner, Universal Allah, among a number of other efforts to build just and equitable communities. “In general, folks try to put you in boxes,” Spivey said. “You have to be ‘in’ a specific industry, but, I’m a builder and an entrepreneur. I like the challenges and have skill sets that I want to invest in and cultivate.” And that runs the gamut of restauranteur to social entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial consulting, and supporting the well-being of women and girls and of color. “I’m really able to leverage my talents,” she said.
When asked about challenges, Spivey noted that Black founders have traditionally encountered barriers to capital access. The diversification of capital is lacking, as is access to resources to address the fundamentals, from identifying niches to finding customers, and to create sustainable organizations with minimal risk and debt. “The thread through my work is ‘economic liberation,’” she said. “What does it mean to have power and choice? In order to do that, I think about the systems in which we operate. And these systems were not built for me. So, let’s build a new system.” As an example, Spivey has played an
Page 12 • November 5, 2021
instrumental role in creating entrepreneurship ecosystems within I Be Black Girl via its first-ofa-kind accelerator, The Catalyst. By investing in Black women founders, Spivey indicated that inequity is addressed and the “return” on such an investment includes the ability for entrepreneurs to take care of their families and contribute positively to thriving communities. She looks at entrepreneurship and community-building through the lens of Black liberation and dismantling oppressive systems. Particularly true to women of color is the challenge of “imposter syndrome.” “Women don’t bet on themselves as often,” Spivey said. “Imposter syndrome has shown up
Women need to support each other, women need to help each other. We could do more, and we should do more than we do. - CELLA QUINN
for me, and I have shifted my mindset.” She also appreciates the value and power of having a “thought partner,” such as an executive coach who can infuse some intentionality and objectivity into one’s professional and personal journey. Spivey also urges women to give themselves a little grace. “Especially in the world of social media, people always put the good out there,” she said, referring to the shiny perfection that is the social universe. “But we’re humans … we’re not perfect. We’re messy and complicated. I have to make sure I give myself grace and the opportunity to fail forward, and to learn from that.”
Building a net(work)
Before Cella Quinn sold her the investment services business that bore her name in 2017, she had around 46 years of experience in the financial
space. Through those years, she was the first woman broker at Omaha Merrill Lynch (1972), the first woman in Smith Barney’s Chairman’s Club and the first woman president of the Rotary Club of Omaha (downtown Rotary). “I was a broker with a major Wall Street firm, and I reached a place where I was maxed out in terms of time available to handle my clients; there was a lack of resources, such as up-to-date computers and software, and inadequate clerical help,” Quinn recalled. “I just felt ‘blocked.’” Then, she heard celebrated inventor, scientist and social entrepreneur Sir Ray Avery speak about the importance of 30,000 days. “If you live 30,000 days, you’ll be 82,” Quinn explained. “He was big on running his own doomsday clock, tallying how many days he is likely to have left on earth and forming goals accordingly — and advocating that we do the same.”
Then 52, Quinn was catapulted by Avery’s words to leave the brokerage firm. She started her own investment firm. She could do things “her way.” “I corralled more resources, specifically with computers and software that fit my practice,” she said. “I hired the assistants I needed and made more money, for my clients and myself.” Harnessing what is oft cited to be wisdom from professional motivator, Jim Rohn, Quinn considered the notion of how one is the “average of the five people you spend the most time with.” “I thought it was bigger than that; I’m the average of all the people who surround me,” she stated. Networking lends itself to this statement. “Women need to support each other, women need to help each other,” Quinn said. “We could do more, and we should do more than we do.” For Quinn’s part, she co-founded Omaha
“
Network 42 years ago as a monthly breakfast group where women entering exec levels could get to know each other. “That was in 1979 when the female population in executive suites was sparse,” she said. Since then, the Omaha Network has supported many new friendships, ideas, and resources. And the Good Old Girls Business Network (GOG) for small business owners and Women of TEN launched in 1992 and 2001, respectively. The “TEN” refers to how they initially met on the 10th of the month. “It is for Omaha’s female movers and shakers, women in top tiers of running their businesses and corporations,” Quinn said. “When a female executive moves into Omaha, it is hard for her to make friends or network with employees. TEN meets monthly for dinner and has evolved into an instrumental and active peer group.”

People are choosing to leave the workforce or are leaving organizations, because they can now successfully work remotely for others. These trends are causing companies to take a much deeper look at hybrid flexibility and scheduling for women and men in business, along with how well-being and overall life experience plays into the employee expectations and culture. - SUSAN L. HENRICKS, PRESIDENT AND CEO, ICAN
Retaining leadership, corporate footholds
The Institute for Career Advancement Needs (ICAN) is always taking a look at both current and future leadership trends that play into the new business and talent landscape, according to President and CEO Susan L. Henricks, and how that affects women in business or how they can take advantage of opportunities — to grow, advance and “lead with intention.” “What we’re seeing is that companies in Omaha are needing to take a fresh approach to how and where they recruit and retain employees — along with a new approach to where do people have to be located,” she said. “It can be across the board — some in office, some in home. “Allowing employees to potentially choose,” Henricks continued, “extends into evolving
recruiting practices, how and where to recruit. Some companies are now recruiting outside of the city to access talent that could now work remotely.” Another “current trend” watched by ICAN is characterized as the “great resignation.” “People are choosing to leave the workforce or are leaving organizations, because they can now successfully work remotely for others,” she said. “These trends are causing companies to take a much deeper look at hybrid flexibility and scheduling for women and men in business, along with how well-being and overall life experience plays into the employee expectations and culture.” One piece answers an important question: “How to ensure women retain a foothold in ‘Corporate America’?” “For example, will women opt for remote
work in greater numbers than men due to home or family interests? If so, will this be a benefit or a pause in advancement of women’s parity in the workforce? Will it lead to pay inequities? A lag in positions? A lack of visibility?” Henricks said. “It will be important for organizations to create presence and opportunity for all team members and how to measure work and success by results, versus hours in an office.” Henricks urges employers to be “mindful” of giving high-achieving remote workers the visibility that they need for advancement and development. “This will be especially true for women if they choose to work remotely,” she asserted. When asked about ICAN’s role in these important conversations, Henricks highlighted its signature annual ICAN Women’s Leadership Conference. An opportunity for women to focus on their careers, learn new skills, pick up new
ideas and inspiring trends to maximize their potential and success, she said the conference typically welcomes more than 3,000 attendees (both women and men). The next “hybrid” conference will be May 18, with theme, speaker and registration details to launch in January. “In addition to the ICAN Women’s Leadership Conference, ICAN also holds a series of leader development programs for the individual, team and organizational level,” Henricks said. “Our four-month Defining Leadership program, kicking off again in February, is a great program and resource to develop and invest in a women leader to rise and advance in the workplace and in life.” Customized leadership development programs, Henricks added, can be built and tailored to organizations’ unique needs and talent goals.

DIGITAL PIONEER
MARKETING marvel MARY ANN O’BRIEN, FOUNDER/CEO, OBI CREATIVE
Data Rules
OBI CREATIVE EVOLVES IN DIGITAL BRANDING Mary Ann O’Brien launched OBI Creative back when most companies were still struggling to get their heads around what the internet was, much less what it could be. Now, nearly 20 years later, the company is bigger and so is the data that OBI harnesses for the benefit of companies across the country and internationally. “When I started OBI, people understood the internet, they just didn’t leverage it like they do today,” she said. “I’ve seen an evolution of sophistication as it relates to digital and one of the really interesting things is that for all organizations, the internet has become the window into the soul of that company. It’s also become the great equalizer.”
Brand strategy “We specialize in understanding customers and applying that knowledge of customers across whatever vertical our clients work within.” OBI Creative’s strategy turns on a multi-faceted approach to a client’s advertising and branding efforts. O’Brien said research is a critical step to ensuring each account gets individualized branding treatment, then can be deployed across a variety of advertising and messaging platforms.
“For me as a brand strategist, I care more about what you do than what you say, because your brand isn’t your logo,” she said. “Your brand is how you treat every touchpoint in your customers’ experience. “Big data can allow us to know what matters at each one of those touchpoints. One of the things that has helped us is that we’ve always been integrated marketers. In technology, you have to use multiple forms of media to attract clients, so we’ve never been a one trick pony when it comes to advertising.”
Customer focus O’Brien noted that the firm does research to understand what matters to the customers of its clients. “We align that with what our clients are good at and we try to meet customers where they are, whether that be online, over the phone, on text or on a mobile app,” she said. “We put together plans that are integrated and usually represent more than one tactic of marketing because we want to attract people when it’s best for them. That usually takes more than one message.”

O’Brien relocated to Omaha more than a decade ago after launching her company in California. She remembers well how much education it took to get companies in the Midwest to warm up to online marketing and branding concepts. Today, she said such technological strategies are taken in stride by most organizations. “When I started OBI in San Diego, the circle of people I was doing business with were early adopters,” she said. “When I moved here, it felt like I had to educate so much and it would frustrate me because I’m so passionate about it. “Today, clients are starting to adopt quicker. They are a lot more open to using technology and they understand the value that it provides their users.”
Don’t be a dinosaur O’Brien said clients aren’t the only ones under the gun to keep up with rapidly developing technology and data tools. She said it’s also seeped into the operational side of OBI Creative itself, so much so that it’s changed the skill set she desires most out of her 45-and-growing employee force, deployed across three offices in Omaha, Des Moines and San Diego, as well as new hires to come. “I have been standing up beating my chest saying, ‘Guys, if you don’t get educated in digital, you’re going to be a dinosaur,’” she said. “I want digital natives.
I want people who don’t know any other way. When people say, ‘Oh, we’re digital marketers’ I’m like, well, anyone good is digital. That applies to all my people here and myself. “I want people who have courage, who are problem-solvers because that’s what we’re doing here. People who have business prowess and have used technology to make their lives easier since the day they were born. That’s where we get the flywheel of optimization happening for our clients.”
Bright future The company is on pace for its best year ever and O’Brien sees much more opportunity for the future. Even as do-it-yourself branding options abound. She said the complexity and speed of the industry has solidified her firm as a go-to for clients across multiple industry sectors. “It’s hard to stay on top of everything,” she said. “If you don’t build brand strategies every day for a living, don’t think you can do it at the same level. “The entire genesis of OBI was based around being customer-led marketers taking the power of data research and using that to inspire better creative. That hasn’t changed and I’m proud of that.”

MBJ COLLABORATIVE TECH
WOMEN WHO rock PAM ALFREY HERNANDEZ , PRESIDENT AND FOUNDER, THE RIGHT REFLECTION
TRAILBLAZING entrepreneur PAM ALFREY HERNANDEZ COACHES OTHERS TO PERSONAL SUCCESS When Pam Alfrey Hernandez was named chief operating officer of Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society (now marketed as WoodmenLife) in 2008, she would represent the first woman to serve at the executive level in the industry grandaddy’s then-125-plus-year history. Though, she certainly didn’t set out to blaze trails in the industry, Hernandez did take the words of her father to heart throughout her career. “My father gave me excellent advice: ‘Make yourself indispensable,’” she recalled. This advice was first applied when starting out as a teacher at Burke High School in Omaha. “It’s a lot harder to get rid of an English teacher who is also a coach, a club sponsor [and so on]. So, I coached volleyball, sponsored cheerleaders, was assistant athletic director …” A few years later, Hernandez would have the opportunity to make herself indispensable yet again in a completely different role and industry. “A parent of one my students offered me a job as a sales trainer at Woodmen Life,” she explained. “Normally, they hired sales agents to train other sales agents. But he took a chance on me.”
In fact, Hernandez had never sold anything. She didn’t know anything about insurance. Yet here she was: the first female instructor for an overwhelmingly male salesforce. “There was no career path I could envision for myself,” she said. “What’s the saying? ‘If you can’t see it, you can’t be it.’ In my case, I couldn’t even see anyone who looked like me in my current position, let alone up the ladder. But I pursued my father’s advice.” Hernandez would find a problem that needed a solution. Or something that needed “doing.” “I’d figure it out, start doing it, and my superiors would realize that whatever ‘it’ was, they needed someone to do it,” she said. Most telling, Hernandez’s only positions that existed before she “inhabited” them were bookends of her 30-year Woodmen career: the first sales instructor role and the last COO position. “Every other position was created because a problem needed solving and I was the one to do it,” she summed up.

POLISHING PROFESSIONAL “DIAMONDS”
HISTORY INFORMS CHANGE
Fittingly, nowadays Hernandez can be found applying her experience and know-how to elevate others as the president and founder of The Right Reflection, an executive coaching and leadership development firm. When asked about her proudest professional accomplishments, Hernandez is quick to point to her clients’ successes. “When individuals tell me that I’ve made a positive difference in their lives, that I have created a safe, compassionate, accepting space where they can look at their life, decide what is working, what isn’t and see a path forward,” she explained. Hernandez has also been told that she is inspiring, something that she credits to her authenticity, meeting people where they “are,” and her ability to see the “diamond in them that needs a bit of polishing.” These qualities are reminiscent of a parting gift that the Woodmen Life VPs gave to her upon leaving the organization in 2015: a beautiful glass elephant. “I must have looked puzzled, because they said, ‘You know why we got this for you, don’t you?’ I guessed, maybe, because I have a good memory?” she recalled. “They said, ‘You have always been the one willing to call out the elephant in the room.’” It is in that sense that Hernandez is agreeable to being called a “pioneer.”
Time and again, Hernandez has carved new paths. She recalled how “lonely” it was to be a woman, and mother, in business in the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. “Those were the days when you didn’t let anyone (even other women) know the struggle it took to work, rear children, manage a home and counteract the biases that were implicit throughout society,” she said. “I remember when I was pregnant with my first daughter, I hid my condition as long as I could. I would even run to a different floor when I had morning sickness, because I didn’t want anyone to suspect I was pregnant.” As Hernandez moved up the ranks and gained visibility, women would come to her for advice. “I was always amazed that these young, intelligent, ambitious women would feel so inadequate as if they were to blame for having difficulty meeting the impossible expectations that society placed on them,” she said. For both women (and men) to receive the support that they need to navigate the challenges of work and life, Hernandez noted changes are needed: Affordable health care; paid family leave for parents; affordable, quality, safe and accessible child care; and flex work arrangements. “As a society, we act as though rearing the next generation is an entirely personal responsibility, and more so for women, rather than a societal obligation,” she said. “But attitudes have been changing. And with the societal changes being brought about by the pandemic, organizations are going to find that they are not going to have a workforce if they don’t do their part to support individuals.”

CRISTINA CASTRO-MATUKEWICZ, VICE PRESIDENT OF COMMUNITY RELATIONS, WELLS FARGO
investing IN OTHERS
SERVICE TO OTHERS DRIVES CASTRO-MATUKEWICZ In a career that has come full circle from nonprofit work to a vice president position at one of the largest banks in the nation, one thing has remained a constant on Cristina Castro-Matukewicz’s resume — service to others. It’s a mission that may be much larger when executed through Wells Fargo Bank where she is vice president of community relations, but one that’s no less targeted on the local community. “I oversee all aspects of the community affairs and community relations,” she said. “Community relations is part of our brand identity, and it encompasses the Wells Fargo Foundation, the work that we do through employee engagement, our volunteer programs. On the community development side, we oversee a lot of compliance work and also reputation management.”
COMMUNITY SERVICE AT WORK
Castro-Matukewicz was named a vice president 10 years ago, but she has always provided integral leadership to Wells Fargo’s community relations over her 15 years with the bank. She said during that tenure, she has seen how
much employees value the chance to participate in community service activities through work. “I think with companies like Wells Fargo, [community service] has always been important and that’s why we, as a company, have been one of the early adopters of what is called CSR, corporate social responsibility,” she said. “That’s the umbrella under which my work is done. That has been important.’ While the importance of service hasn’t changed, the way that employees participate has. “What has changed the most is the way that we do this program,” she said. “I will tell you, the baby boomer generation were good participants, but they were doing it in a different way. It was more about a sense of duty. Like, I have to do my part, I have to contribute to the United Way on the employee giving side. I have to volunteer to represent the company. What has changed with the newer generation is that they are doing it more out of a sense of personal fulfillment, not as a sense of duty. They are volunteering because they care about the cause they are supporting.”

They are volunteering because they care about the cause they are supporting. - CRISTINA CASTRO-MATUKEWICZ, VICE PRESIDENT OF COMMUNITY RELATIONS, WELLS FARGO
Given this shift in priorities among employees, it was particularly difficult to have to cancel many of the company’s planned activities due to COVID-19. “Personal volunteering has been on hold since March of last year,” she said. “Because of COVID concerns, we had to put the well-being of our employees first and had to make those tough decisions. We know our nonprofit partners needed the help, but we have to think about the safety of our employees first. “But eventually, we were able to virtual volunteer. It’s not for everybody but quite honestly, in-person volunteering is not for everybody, either. It’s just different; personally, I volunteer virtually as much as I did in person.”
NURTURING MENTOR RELATIONSHIPS
Castro-Matukewicz, who was a Midlands Business Journal 40 Under 40 honoree in 2006, has found another outlet for her desire to serve others, that being through one-on-one mentorship. “One of the most fulfilling aspects of my professional career is to be able to formally or informally mentor others, particularly other women,” she said. “I have three or four people who I mentor internally and externally. They are all different relationships, but in all those cases, they came to me and asked for my help.
“I feel honored that they think I can be a mentor to them, but I would say it’s a mutual exchange because I learn as much as they do through the process. It’s amazing. They are brilliant young people who are doing amazing things and I learn a lot from them. And I hope that I am contributing to them with my input and perspective.”
DON’T GIVE UP
In those mentoring relationships, Castro-Matukewicz emphasized consistently on several elements of personal and professional success. “One piece of advice that I have is definitely to find a workplace, an environment, in which you feel you can bring your whole self to work,” she said. “Find someplace where you don’t have to do that masking and change your personality on who you are to fit within the culture of the organization. She also said it’s important to not give up, even when you have setbacks or don’t receive the promotion or transfer you applied for. “Personally, I think the most important thing is don’t give up,” she said. “Never, never give up. Just do something else. Try something else, something different, but don’t give up. Don’t give up on your dreams.”

REAL ESTATE GAMECHANGER
SMALL business KARIE MILFORD, FOUNDER, MILFORD REAL ESTATE
Visionary Realtor
KARIE MILFORD REVOLUTIONIZES HOMEBUYING Since Karie Milford founded the firm that bears her name as a highly attentive “boutique” alternative to other businesses in the metro real estate space eight years ago, Milford Real Estate has taken great care to onboard quality administrative professionals to support its Realtors, while also building out a range of services that include its unique Milford Select. “We invested in a high caliber administrative team that takes care of everything on the back end, so that our agents can focus on our No. 1 priority, our clients,” Milford said of the former differentiator. “Everything at Milford is done with the client in mind, and it has been built that way — intentionally.” From its “home base” at 1815 N. 169th Plaza in Omaha, Milford Real Estate provides services for buyers and sellers in the residential market across more than 11 communities, including Omaha, Lincoln, Council Bluffs, Bellevue, Elkhorn, Ashland, Papillion, Gretna, Plattsmouth, Springfield, and Milford. “Milford Real Estate has put together a world-class team of professionals dedicated to ensuring that the client’s real estate experience runs smoothly from start to finish,” said Milford, who doubles as a Realtor. “There is always someone
available at Milford Real Estate.” These qualities harken back to Milford’s objectives when she first launched the firm; to build a brand “synonymous with refinement and quality.” Milford’s Business Manager, Jennifer Parker, recalled how at the outset the founder was determined to bring an upscale, cohesive, “client-first” approach to the real estate industry. The team has deepened its ability to serve clients of all kinds and from all walks of life. “Milford has been growing and expanding both their sales and administrative teams exponentially, with no plan to slow down in sight,” Parker said, adding that Milford’s visionary leadership and tireless work ethic have contributed to the firm’s success over the past decade.
History informs growth In fact, success as the owner of a brokerage has not stood in the way of Milford getting in touch with her roots as a Realtor and helping clients. These

roots accompany a new focus: building the business and aiding her team in their professional development and growth. “One of the most rewarding pieces of my job is helping my team achieve their goals and watching them succeed,” she said. “People come to Milford because they want a better real estate experience. “Our clients certainly have options when it comes time to decide which brokerage they want to buy and sell with. They choose us because they want to accomplish a goal, and they know we are going to make that happen for them.”
Revolutionizing homebuying Within its menu of services, Milford Real Estate leadership noted a new offering: Milford Select. The offering is described as allowing a selling client to buy a new home — without having to wait for their current home to sell within today’s “rapid-fire real estate market.” They indicated that clients appreciate the seamless nature of the process. “No fixing up the home, no showings, no listing; just accept the offer, pick a closing day and the home is sold ‘as is’ to Milford Select,” she said. “Once closed, the Milford team goes in, fixes up the home and sells it.” It was reported that client benefits are two-fold; once the sellers move out, the team matches the house with a buyer and the buyer can select his or her own finishes for the home. The brokerage “holds all construction costs” and contracts
all work on the home. In effect, a new home build experience is created for the buyer-client, without the price tag and the “two-year wait” that traditionally accompanies the process. They stress that clients have a choice. Clients can go the “traditional route” or they can use Milford Select for a hybrid, unique alternative to the conventional home build/buy experience.
Building a “family” Milford further emphasized that the ability to serve clients has been shaped by a tight-knit team that operates “like a family,” rather than a brokerage of independent agents who never work together. “It’s a community, that’s what we’re building here,” she said. Milford is also keenly aware of the communities that surround her “community.” As Parker noted, the leader has been involved with Go Beyond, a local nonprofit dedicated to camping experiences to help youth gain different perspectives via nature. The program aims to challenge youth, helping them gain confidence and build leadership skills. It may be the first opportunity for a child to experience the outdoors — to camp, rock climb, and even whitewater raft. The cause is particularly near and dear to Milford’s heart, as she is a former attendee and longtime supporter of Camp Confidence (now, Go Beyond Nebraska).

Small Brave Moves
NICOLE BIANCHI’S BOOK EXPLORES BRAVERY AND LEADERSHIP
Small Brave Moves’ explores the intersection of bravery and leadership. - NICOLE BIANCHI
Often we think of bravery in big bold actions, but Omaha author and leadership coach Nicole Bianchi contends that many small brave moves will often compound over time to create competitive advantages in both life and business. In April 2021, New Degree Press published the paperback and eBook editions of Bianchi’s book, “Small Brave Moves: Learn Why Little Acts of Bravery are the Key to Life-Changing Leadership.” The hardcover and audio editions were released in October. “‘Small Brave Moves’ explores the intersection of bravery and leadership,” Bianchi said. “Readers will discover how small brave moves made often will compound over time creating competitive advantages both in life and business. With this foundation of bravery, leaders can then intentionally craft a thriving culture of bravery for themselves and others.”
The inspiration Bianchi was inspired to write the book when she saw that a common missing element in leaders was bravery — being brave enough to make the ask, have a tough conversation and to share different ideas. “After launching my Being Brave Series during the pandemic, I realized leaders had built bravery and the act of it to be something so big and unattainable,” Bianchi said. “Bravery plus leadership creates a competitive advantage for leaders, and it takes small brave moves to get there. The book illustrates how to be brave in your professional and personal life and speaks to emerging first-time and experienced leaders who want to lead in a new way. You will be inspired to transform one small brave move at a time.” The book received several endorsements, including one from Daniel Pink — best-selling author of “When, Drive, and To Sell is Human” — which was printed on the front cover of the hardback edition. “Small Brave Moves” is available on Amazon and locally at The Bookworm. Bianchi’s next book, which she calls the next stage for “Small Brave Moves,” is planned for release in 2023.
Learning to be brave Bianchi is a partner in Bravium, an Omaha-based boutique facilitation and coaching firm that specializes in developing leaders at all levels, designing and facilitating workshops and off-site meetings, and one-on-one executive coaching. Bianchi started her first business venture, according to Bravium’s website, when she was 9 years old, digging up worms to sell to bait shops. The business failed, but she persisted, earning a degree in human resources from University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Her first professional role was as an HR intern at Conagra Brands. “Back then it was the wild, wild west,” she said. “[Conagra was] growing so fast acquiring brands, they lacked infrastructure. It was not your typical internship.” As an intern, Bianchi developed Conagra’s first affirmative action plan and employee handbook. She quickly began modeling sales incentive plans, hiring for positions, and terminating employees for wrongdoing. From there she moved into a chief human resources officer role at FirstComp, leading all aspects of HR plus communications, facilities and purchasing. “After 16 years working inside two powerful Fortune 500 companies, I fulfilled a dream to start my own business,” Bianche said. “Building Bravium HD with my business partner Jeff Shannon has been an amazing ride. We partner with clients all over the world.” Bianchi and her husband, Dave, the Sergeant of Narcotics for the Omaha Police Department, have three children. Daughter Moe, a senior at Northwest Missouri State University, is studying business and leadership, and is on the nationally-ranked Women’s Track and Field team. Joe is a sophomore at Benedictine University where he is studying business and exercise science. He plays on the nationallyranked men’s Lacrosse team. Nic graduated in May from Papillion LaVista South Titans and is taking a gap year to grow his business, Bianchi Candle Co.

JUST A YEAR AFTER OPENING A SECOND LOCATION IN ELKHORN, THE OMAHA BAKERY HAS TRIPLED ITS FOOTPRINT BY OPENING A LOCATION IN BELLEVUE, REPLACING THE ORIGINAL LOCATION ON 72ND STREET. “One year ago, before we opened the Elkhorn location, all we had was 2,400 square feet,” said owner Michelle Kaiser. “Now we have 2,400 square feet in Elkhorn and 4,800 Square feet in Bellevue.” The ‘game changer’ for the bakery has been its ability to accommodate varying diets and allergies, such as the Keto, vegan, gluten free, and sugar free. “People come to a bakery because they want to celebrate or they’re sad and they want to feel happiness,” Kaiser said. “We want to create whatever that is for them. We don’t ever want someone to feel left out.” The new location, which was formerly a Panera Bread, is right off Highway 75 on Cornhusker Road at 10503 S. 15th Street, Suite 109. Kaiser is hoping that the close proximity to big box retailers, as well as Bellevue West High School, will help increase foot traffic, which was lacking at the 72nd Street location. “It was also hard to keep staff [at the 72nd Street location],” Kaiser said. She is hoping that students that live nearby will be interested in the part-time jobs she has to offer. A soft opening was held on Oct. 11 for 100 guests. A ribbon cutting with the Sarpy County Chamber and Greater Omaha Chamber was scheduled for Nov. 2. “We’re excited to be in this community and we’re excited to serve the military families here,” Kaiser said. “We have felt so welcomed.”

WHEN ZEN COFFEE CO. BEGAN EXPERIENCING PANDEMIC RELATED DISTRIBUTION AND SHORTAGE ISSUES, THE IDEA FOR TO-GO LATTES IN GLASS CONTAINERS WAS BORN. Utilizing QR codes, Zen now offers an option that reduces the time spent waiting in line and reduces touch points. “We always have guests who want a quick in and out option on the weekends and this is especially great because they can skip the line, scan, pay and be on their way,” said owner Abby McLeay. Launched on Oct. 1, the lineup has grown to include signature best sellers, Butter Beer and Honey Bee lattes, in addition to the original lineup of cold brew, iced latte, matcha, chai and lavender lemonade. “You can preorder and customize them for specific milks and flavors,” she said. “They will start plain but you can ask a barista to add flavor choices at no extra cost.” Keeping in line with its commitment to sustainable practices, the glass bottles can be returned to either the Farnam Hill or west Omaha location for a $1 off the customer’s next purchase. “We are always trying to find ways to make things more sustainable around here and encourage guests to go with the eco-friendly option,” McLeay said. “It is not always as easy as you think it will be; society is very accustomed to their ways.” Preorders can be made at zencoffeecompany.com and each bottle is $6, or $5 if you’re returning a glass container.

DETOX SOBER LOUNGE
AFTER OVER A YEAR OF POP-UP EVENTS, DETOX SOBER LOUNGE FINALLY FOUND A HOME AT 7215 BLONDO ST. IN AUGUST Since then, owner and founder Alexis Lawson has been hard at work building an entertainment calendar for all kinds of quests. “We’ve had pregnant women, people under 21, sober-curious people, or even people with health problems,” Lawson said. “Or, some people just want to come out and have a dry night, they just want to hang out and shoot some pool.” The month of October brought in a freestyle rap battle, a burlesque show, karaoke, bingo, a glow dance, Soundz Like Omaha Showcase, and Reformed Fiend Fest 2021. Lawson, who has spoken openly about her addictions and road to recovery, said the goal is to first and foremost create a safe space for others in recovery. “We want to make people aware that there’s an alternative to bars [that serve alcohol] when you’re trying to get sober,” she said. “When I first got sober I found myself in bars because I just wanted to shoot pool. [But] we don’t need to go to those places if they’re not safe.” In addition to having live events, the lounge also has board games, a dance floor and serves up mocktails, soda, coffee and energy drinks. There is currently a GoFundMe page to raise funds to purchase commercial kitchen equipment. The volunteer staff of 14 has been discussing fundraising events to help expedite the process.

NEBRASKA HEALTH CARE ASSOCIATION
THE NEBRASKA HEALTH CARE ASSOCIATION DIDN’T HAVE TO LOOK FAR TO FIND ITS NEW PRESIDENT AND CEO. In October it announced that Jalene Carpenter would step into the leadership role on Nov. 10. Carpenter is no stranger to the organization, spending the last 12 years serving on various committees and its board of directors. The Nebraska Health Care Association is the umbrella organization for the Nebraska Nursing Facility Association, Nebraska Assisted Living Association, Nebraska Health Care Learning Center, and the Nebraska Health Care Foundation. It serves 425 nonprofit and proprietary skilled nursing facilities and assisted living communities across Nebraska. Mark Iverson, chair of the Nebraska Assisted Living Association, said the committee was looking for someone who understood the challenges of Nebraskans. Carpenter has spent the majority of her career working and advocating for Nebraskans, first as an administrator at South Haven Living Center in Wahoo, before moving on to Vetter Health Services and then to NRC Health. Carpenter helped NHCA form its first leadership program to help develop local talent. She has spoken on a national and state level and has represented Nebraska as a delegate on Capitol Hill, among other engagements. “I am excited and honored to serve the members of Nebraska Health Care Association and to continue the mission of serving those who serve,” Carpenter said. “Our work of advocacy, education, and support for members is crucial for them to continue to navigate one of most challenging crises in our profession. I look forward to joining this amazing team and association.”
SMASH OMAHA
SERIAL RESTAURATEURS ASHLEY AND PAUL MOODY HAVE OPENED THEIR NEWEST VENTURE, SMASH OMAHA, IN AKSARBEN’S INNER RAIL FOOD HALL. The couple, who are based in Knoxville, Tennessee, said their Omaha connections drew them to the Inner Rail. “We have a thriving relationship with the hospitality group that operates Inner Rail Food Hall and when they knew there would be a spot available for us to join in, they extended the invitation and we jumped at the chance,” Ashley Moody said. She said that while the concept isn’t anything new, her husband, Chef Paul Moody, is what makes the menu unique. “Let’s be honest, there’s nothing new about smash burger, the idea has been around for a long time,” she said. “But when you take years of culinary genius from Chef Paul Moody and combine it with the simplistic design of a classic smash burger, you get something really fantastic.” The focus is on ingredients and how those ingredients are prepared. For example, there is a technique for creating the perfect crust on each smash patty and sauces are made in-house. “We also veered from the typical fried chicken sandwich and created a Chicken Smash,” she said. “After much experimentation, we found the perfect blend of dark and white meat ground chicken to keep the flavor but gives you a slightly lighter option.” A full menu and hours can be found at innerrailfoodhall.com/smash.

Helping Employees Navigate Life’s Challenges A SUPPORTIVE WORKPLACE IS GOOD FOR BUSINESS WORKFORCE SERVICES
SAVE THESE dates:
Sometimes, life happens at work. These are those moments when we are not fully present—either physically or mentally. Who does an employee turn to in these moments? Some employees may be fortunate enough to have someone in their life on which they can count for support. However, it’s likely that many employees don’t possess the financial means or personal support network to address all of life’s challenges—especially the most complex personal problems. The Greater Omaha Worklab (GrOW) program is a workplace benefit offered by the Greater Omaha Chamber. It sits at the intersection between the at-work person and the at-home person. At GrOW, we purposely ignore those distinctions and focus on the whole person.
On-Site, Unlimited One-on-One Support GrOW’s service revolves around our team of workplace Navigators. They are available, on-site and on-demand, to employees at our partner companies. Navigators meet your employees where they are, not just mentally and emotionally. We go one step further to meet them where they spend most of their time: at work. Our Navigators create space—that is safe and confidential, familiar and non-judgmental—for an employee to talk. We hold no power over their pay or their position. We foster a relationship with each employee and create a bridge for them back to the community. Our team connects employees with relevant services from non-profits, government resources and individuals or organizations in the private sector. We practice warm hand-offs. Because of our partnership with an employer, we can know and understand the benefits they offer to employees. What Our Support Means to Employees Over the past two years, we’ve created partnerships with 11 employers across our community, and to date, we’ve served over 800 individuals. However, what sticks with us most are the employee success stories at our partner organizations. We helped one employee regain custody of their children and do so without facing mounting legal fees. We’ve helped numerous employees access wellness services through their EAP benefits. We’ve helped dispel misconceptions about seeking therapy and other forms of assistance. Employees trust the resource because they trust us. Through our financial coaching services, we’ve helped hundreds of

AS climate concerns THREATEN
AIR TRAVEL, AVIATION INDUSTRY BANKS ON technology solutions A PLANE IS REFUELED ON THE TARMAC AT SEATTLE-TACOMA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT IN SEATAC BY A FUELER IN WASHINGTON.
As aviation struggles to emerge from the historic, pandemic-driven downturn, another longer-term challenge already looms. Concern about air travel’s contribution to climate change threatens to curtail growth of an industry that has expanded steadily for decades, shrinking the world for travelers and connecting the global economy. The airline industry, contending with growing political pressure in Europe and recently even in Seattle for new restrictions on flying, this month formally committed to a target of “net zero” carbon emissions by 2050. To achieve that, governments and industry will have to invest billions of dollars in infrastructure in the coming decade. Further out, Boeing and Airbus will have to develop dramatically new airplane designs. For the flying public, all outcomes in the years ahead point to an increase in the cost of flying. Yet that distant net-zero emissions target is so radical, and the proposed technology solutions so uncertain, that aviation risks falling far short. Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury recently warned that if the industry’s new push for climate sustainability fails, governments could force a reduction in air travel by banning some of the flying that is routine today — a major step back after more than 100 years of passenger flights.
“Aviation has a very important role on the planet to connect people and to contribute to prosperity,” he said at a two-day aviation sustainability summit convened by Airbus in France last month. “We are at a point where this is in danger if we don’t manage to transition and succeed in the decarbonization of the sector.”

This is “the number one matter of discussion in the industry, even more than COVID now,” he added. Under pressure, the world’s major airlines have firmly committed to one key technology that will dominate aviation’s environmental push in the coming decade: Sustainable Aviation Fuel, or SAF. For the plane manufacturers, the major costs and big risks will come later. In the coming decade, Airbus and Boeing will make money from the airlines’ push for sustainability by promoting the sale of new, more efficient jets to replace older planes that burn more gas and produce more carbon emissions. But further out, the plane builders will need to develop dramatically new technologies. Airbus is already aggressively pursuing research to develop by 2035 a zero-emission, short-haul airliner powered with hydrogen. That research is largely funded by European governments. Boeing contends that hydrogen-powered aircraft won’t be realistic until as late as 2050. But as Mike Sinnett, Boeing vice president of product development, recently said, “whatever the next airplane is, we recognize sustainability is going to be a driving factor.”
Page 32 • November 5, 2021
After the world’s airlines announced the new “net zero by 2050” goal at this month’s annual conference of the International Air Transport Association, IATA Director General Willie Walsh demanded a big technology leap from Airbus and Boeing. “It’s not good enough that we get incremental change in efficiency with the aircraft,” Walsh said. “To get to net zero we’re going to need a fundamental change.”
Climate Campaigns
The latest definitive scientific study estimates that aviation contributes a net 3.5% of total human-induced climate impact. Cleaning it up has become a focus of those who see an existential crisis in climate change. “There is a limited time for a life-altering change for my generation and my children’s generation,” said Sarah Shifley, a lawyer who volunteers on the aviation team of climate activist group 350 Seattle. This summer, 350 Seattle mounted a campaign opposing a planned expansion of flights at Boeing Field, where corporate jets and cargo aircraft, as well as Boeing delivery and test flights, fly in and out. transportation needs — and is weighing the need for one or more new airports — projects takeoffs and landings in the region will double by 2050 to over 800,000. In similar fashion, Boeing projects the world’s fleet of airliners doubling by 2040, driven by growth in emerging economies. That’s an appalling prospect to Shifley. “After the summer we’ve had, of heat domes and hurricanes and floods and fires, it’s unfathomable to me to be considering doubling” air traffic, she said. Elsewhere, particularly in Europe, flying is already being curbed by government policy. France in April banned domestic flights between cities with a train connection of less than 2.5 hours. Various government
agencies and organizations around Europe have imposed similar bans on short-haul flights for employee business travel. At the Airbus sustainability summit, Andrew Murphy, aviation director at Transport & Environment, a nonprofit that campaigns for clean transportation, said planned expansion of airports in Europe should stop. He called for mandates with strict timelines to spur the decarbonization of aviation. “What would drive innovation and drive focus in the sector is if we were to say, by 2035, we will end the sale of jet aircraft for short-haul flights in Europe,” Murphy said. Ross Macfarlane, a vice president
at both the Sierra Club and the Clean Energy Transition Institute, which seeks to cut carbon emissions out of the Pacific Northwest economy, said the U.S. needs to look at high-speed rail and other alternatives to flying. He said the COVID-19 lockdown has demonstrated there are “ways to do business that are frankly more efficient than jumping on a plane at the drop of a hat.” Yet he acknowledges how critical aviation is to modern life and the global economy. “It’s both unrealistic and not in society’s interest to take a stance of simply advocating for aviation to go away. It’s not going to happen,” he said.
Science and Uncertainty
Jet airplane engines burn a lot of fuel. Alaska Airlines alone burns 750 million gallons per year. Alaska provided data for a Boeing 737-900ER flight Oct. 6 from Seattle to Philadelphia: It burned 4,388 gallons of jet fuel, or about 24 gallons per passenger, counting bags and some extra cargo. Yet driving that 2,800-mile trip in a typical family car would use about 112 gallons of gas, making it less fuel efficient even with four people in the car. The most recent comprehensive scientific analysis of aviation’s impact on

fleet of airliners more than doubled, the increasingly efficient airplanes burned less fuel. Meanwhile, other human-induced climate impacts grew as fast so that percentage contribution was constant. Sean Newsum, director of environmental sustainability strategy at Boeing, said one can infer “that aviation emissions are growing at a rate no greater than the global emissions overall.” The Atmospheric Environment analysis estimates that only a third of aviation’s 3.5% net contribution to climate change is from its

CO2 emissions, with the largest contribution coming from airplane contrails. A jet contrail — the line of what looks like white smoke that sometimes trails an airplane — is not an emission from the airplane. It’s water vapor that is already in the air around the plane that’s triggered to condense, forming ice particles. While contrails often disappear completely in a short period, under certain atmospheric conditions they persist as diffuse cirrus clouds that reflect back terrestrial radiation, with a net warming effect. The conclusion that aviation’s non-CO2 impact on the climate — mostly from contrails, but also from soot particles, nitrogen oxides and other trace emissions — is twice as large as that from its CO2 emissions alone is often cited with alarm by climate activists. However, there’s great scientific uncertainty around the climate impact of the non-CO2 emissions. A lead author of the Atmospheric Environment paper, David Fahey of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Boulder, Colorado, said in an interview that modeling the effect of contrails is complex, producing calculations with such wide probability ranges that the warming impact is “of uncertain magnitude.” Speaking at the Airbus sustainability summit, another leading climate expert, Drew Shindell, professor of earth science at Duke University, said the impact of contrails “really is still up for debate in the scientific community” and is “probably not such an enormous problem.” That suggests aviation’s total net contribution to climate change could be significantly less than 3.5% of the total human-induced impact. Fahey said climate scientists aim to provide policymakers the best available data, while also laying out all the uncertainties. “People are throwing rocks at aviation,” he said. “It’s complicated.”

Hydrogen Power
At the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, known as COP26, which convenes at the end of this month in Glasgow, Scotland, countries around the world will commit to new targets to lower emissions. As a global business, international air travel has until now fallen outside the scope of those national targets, its goals instead set through the U.N.’s International Civil Aviation Organization, which is heavily influenced by the world’s airlines. However, as conference host, the U.K. is launching the International Aviation Climate Ambition Coalition in Glasgow to try to get more countries to sign a substantive declaration on aviation emissions. Clearly, if aviation is to avoid regional restrictions being imposed on flying, major industry players will have to convince the public and governments that they are taking real action. Airbus CEO Faury is confident his engineers will have a hydrogen-powered short-haul airplane ready by 2035, though the jet maker won’t have to commit significant investment of its own until it formally launches an airplane program around 2027. At the IATA conference in Boston, Boeing Commercial Airplanes chief Stan Deal expressed his doubts that hydrogen-powered airliners can be ready in that time frame. First, there’s the complexity of a totally new airplane design. Deal pointed out that liquid hydrogen occupies 18% more volume than current jet fuel and must be wrapped in cryogenic equipment to keep it cooled to -418°F. Designing such a system, he said, presents “some physics problems.” Certifying it as safe to fly also will be a major hurdle. As Boeing’s Sinnett expressed it, “To have a safe system that can carry liquid hydrogen and be as safe as we are with jet fuel today, that might be bigger and heavier than you want to put on an airplane.”

Even Airbus acknowledges it will take far longer to develop hydrogen power for large, long-haul aircraft. In addition, hydrogen production requires lots of electricity — and if that comes from a carbon-dirty source, there’s no net climate benefit in using it as fuel. So energy companies will have to vastly scale up production of “green hydrogen,” produced from sustainable sources. And then airports around the world will have to invest in the cryogenic tank infrastructure and equipment needed to dispense the liquid hydrogen to airplanes. Hydrogen, Sinnett said, “is not ready for prime time yet. It’s a longer-term play.” While Boeing has worked with NASA on various futuristic “green airplane” concepts, for now it offers the prospect of only incremental technology tweaks to its current planes. Otherwise, it promotes SAF as the potential solution to aviation’s climate impact — a technology being developed and paid for not by the manufacturers but by alternative energy startups with government support. Sustainable Aviation Fuel On that, Faury and Airbus agree: If the industry is to meet the net zero goal, it cannot wait for hydrogen and must over the next three decades dramatically scale up the use of SAF. Yet that too is a difficult technological goal. SAF is a hydrocarbon fuel typically produced from biomass feedstock such as waste oils or plant debris and purified so that the final liquid is essentially identical to current jet fuel. When SAF burns in a jet engine, it produces exactly the same carbon emissions. Nevertheless, it’s deemed “sustainable” because the life cycle of those emissions shows the carbon being absorbed from the air by plants, then recycled back to the air. This contrasts with fossil fuel, where the carbon going into the air had previously been
sequestered underground for millions of years. If SAF is carefully produced using the cleanest methods, it’s touted as providing a life-cycle reduction in carbon emissions of between 50% and 80% compared with fossil fuels. Because SAF can be simply dropped in a tank instead of jet fuel, neither the design of the airplane nor the fueling infrastructure at the airport need to change. The problem is producing SAF in sufficient quantities at an affordable price. The small quantities produced today cost five to seven times as much as jet fuel. Though demonstration flights have flown on SAF, it makes up less than 1% of the aviation fuel currently used. To hit its net zero emissions target, IATA wants that scaled up so that 65% of all aviation fuel is SAF by 2050. Macfarlane of the Sierra Club believes SAF can work, while acknowledging that “skepticism is well justified.” “There are many proposals out there for biofuels that would be used for aviation, that
aren’t sustainable and aren’t really scalable,” he said. Identifying truly sustainable sources is problematic. Imported palm oil, for example, the cause of deforestation in Southeast Asia, is unacceptable. And producers must consider what land use is displaced by growing the feedstock. Still, momentum and investment are building to overcome these obstacles. Multiple SAF projects are in the works in the U.S. and around the world. Oil giant Shell has committed to produce 2 million metric tons of SAF per year by 2025, though to be clear, that’s less than 1% of aviation’s annual fuel needs. The Bend, Oregon-based U.S. subsidiary of alternative fuels startup SkyNRG plans to build a plant for producing such jet fuel out of landfill waste. Boeing has a deal with SkyNRG to tap that proposed facility for its own aviation fuel needs. The Department of Energy in September awarded $64.7 million in new funding for biofuels, with SkyNRG getting
$1 million of that. With coal and gas climate change provisions already cut from President Joe Biden’s proposed social spending legislation, Sen. Maria Cantwell is pushing to retain $1 billion for SAF research and tax credits so as to stimulate production of 3 billion gallons of SAF per year in the U.S. by 2030 — about 10% of U.S. airline fuel needs. Major companies keen to burnish their own sustainability credentials are putting money into jump-starting SAF production. Microsoft has agreed to pay Alaska Airlines for SAF, expensive as it is, to be used on certain West Coast routes frequently flown by its employees. At the Airbus summit, John Holland-Kaye, CEO of London’s Heathrow Airport, said that without sustainability “we won’t have a business.” “It may well be that the flying does cost a little bit more,” he said. “But that will be a price worth paying.”

LOCAL LEGAL
LEGAL notices
The following are some guidelines to consider when posting legal notices with the Midlands Business Journal: 1. Submit a written notice in either Microsoft Word or as a PDF document to the Legal Department at legals@ mbj.com. For trade names, submit a copy of approved (bar code in upper right hand corner) Application For Registration of Trade Name from the Secretary of State to the same email address. Please include your billing address and the desired duration you’d like your notice to run (trade names run for only one week). As a publisher and not a legal advisor we print notices exactly as they are submitted and therefor only comp reruns when the notice was rejected or messed up due to a MBJ error. All companies submitting notices are responsible for ensuring the content fits with the State’s requirements and are responsible for the cost of republishing the notice if it is rejected due to misinformation or missing information 2. You will receive a confirmation and price quote. Legal notices, except for trade names, are charged per line. The flat fee for a trade name is $50. Payment options are cash or check. 3. Deadline is noon on Tuesday for a notice to start publishing that Friday. 4. All costs include fees to file the notice with the Secretary of State and/or any appropriate courts. 5. You will receive a paid invoice copy the first week it runs.
