Omaha Bridges Out of Poverty PROGRAM
GRADUATES RISE OUT OF POVERTY
In its eight years, Omaha Bridges Out of Poverty, Inc. has experienced a rapid increase in the number of annual graduates of its “Getting Ahead In a Just-Gettin’-By World” curriculum, rising from 28 to 387.
But, for CEO Marcus Bell, the number of graduates scratches the surface of the organizations’ impact on the Greater Omaha and Council Bluffs area. The hard data only tells one part of this transformative story.
“It goes so much deeper than that,” Bell stated. “Our graduates are seeing life-changing results, like an average annual income increase of $18,000. They’re learning about debt-to-income ratios, reducing their debt by 50%, and growing their assets by about $7,500 each year.”
Omaha Bridges also measures participants’ progress on a 15-factor stability scale with stress, health, behavior, emotions, bills, housing and other key areas assessed.
“The biggest positive impacts we see are in stress, health, bills and emotional well-being, and when you hear the heartfelt testimonials at
graduation, it’s impossible not to get emotional,” Bell said. “You can’t pull this kind of raw, life-changing impact from data alone. You hear those powerful ‘Aha!’ moments where graduates realize, ‘I can do this.’”
Even if they stumble, he continued, the tools and support are within reach to get back up.
“Our mission is empowering under-resourced families to change their lives by discovering and overcoming barriers to success,” he said. “We do this by offering a curriculum that covers financial awareness, people skills and soft skills.”
There are a minimum of eight “Getting Ahead” program cohorts each quarter in partnership with community organizations. The eight- to nineweek program is offered free of charge, and each cohort spans 10 to 14 participants.
“Participants actively engage in their journey toward self-sufficiency,” Bell said. “Classes are led by a lead facilitator and co-facilitator, who guide the sessions collaboratively.”
Our graduates are seeing life-changing results, like an average annual income increase of $18,000.

Additionally, the classes are held in-person and virtually in English and Spanish, at locations convenient to public transportation.
“Child care is offered when space allows, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity,” he added. “In-person sessions include meals and foster a community atmosphere.”
Facilitators are not traditional teachers.
“[They] guide the curriculum, emphasizing a nonauthoritative approach,” Bell explained. “This investigative model empowers participants to take control of their paths to success.”
Notably, all facilitators, co-facilitators, and 90% of its staff are program graduates.
“Most of our staff have had firsthand experience living in poverty and can identify with the stories of our participants,” he said.
Investigators set goals to grow in 11 key areas: finances, emotions, mentality, physical support systems, relationships, role models, knowledge of hidden rules, integrity, trust, motivation and persistence.
“The passion of our staff for the people we serve and their belief in the program truly form the foundation of our ‘secret sauce,’” Bell said. “We are fortunate to have incredible facilitators, many of whom share similar lived experiences with our participants. This creates a deeper connection and understanding between them.”
In addition to the “safe space” forged over two months, life skills coaches stay connected with graduates after the program.
“They refer them to resources, assist them with starting their own businesses, walk alongside them and help them continue to achieve their goals as they move forward in their new life stories,” he said. “It’s this ongoing support that makes all the difference.”
Never standing still
Needs for support and, accordingly, resources have grown with Omaha Bridges evolving to offer more classes in Spanish and other languages commonly spoken in the metro.
“The pandemic accelerated our growth by pushing us to offer online classes, which has become a lasting part of our program,” Bell said. “When we started, our very first graduation had just five graduates, and now, each quarter, we proudly graduate 80 to 100 individuals.”
The aforementioned life skills coaching, too, represents an evolution for the nonprofit, as Bell said they recognized the need for continued support to help grads achieve their goals after class.
“What began with small graduation ceremonies in the basement of our office has now grown to such an extent that we hold them at the CHI Health Center,” he said. “For many, this is their first time having that experience of a graduation, making it a truly monumental moment in their lives.”
This year, Bell said Getting Ahead is on track to graduate around 380 to 400 individuals.
“To date, we’ve graduated 185 cohorts and a total of 1,703 graduates,” he said. “We’re looking ahead to the summer of 2025 when we expect to reach an amazing milestone — 2,000 graduates.”
Omaha Bridges is also looking ahead to the expansion of its “Getting Ahead in the Workplace” program, in collaboration with employers. At the time of this writing, partnerships spanned CHI Health, Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital, and Children’s Nebraska.
“And we’re excited about expanding into industries beyond health care,” he said. “This workplace version of the Getting Ahead curriculum is tailored to provide employees with valuable skills, all in partnership with their employers. Employers see benefits in the way of improved culture and better working employees.”
Bell also said they are placing a big emphasis on the power of social capital within the curriculum.
“Social capital is all about the networks, relationships and trust that individuals and groups build to access resources, support, and opportunities,” he said. “I would encourage the business community to tap into their own social capital to raise awareness for our organization and the incredible individuals we serve who are overcoming poverty.”
He also welcomes volunteers to help with quarterly graduations. In an announcement to coincide with the June 22 second quarter graduation and its inaugural family reunion event, graduate Racean Lowe is quoted as saying, “Now that we understand the importance of budgeting, credit, using available resources, gaining knowledge, building and bridging social capital, don’t forget to share this information with our community. You may be the person that not only breaks generational curses for your family, but for other families, too.”
In fact, some grads are going on to start their own businesses and some 20 alumni business owners were reportedly on hand at the grad/reunion event.
“One particularly unique and inspiring story from a recent class involved four female family members, spanning four different generations, who all graduated together,” Bell recalled. “Interestingly, these women had not been on the best of terms before joining the class, so much so that they didn’t even reveal they were related until the fourth week.”
Through the course, however, he said they found a safe, supportive space to finally discuss unaddressed issues.
“By the end, they credited the class with transforming their relationship, expressing deep gratitude for the opportunity to reconnect and build stronger bonds,” Bell stated.
Participants reportedly are aged between 19 to 65. Thirty-nine percent identify as Hispanic/Latino with 28% identifying as Black/African American and Caucasian. The balance of 5% identity as “other.” The majority of participants are women at 84% and more than 95% earn less than 200% of the federal poverty level.

End-of-Year Planning
SETTING SMALL BUSINESS GOALS FOR 2025
MITTAN DISTRICT DIRECTOR, SBA NEBRASKA
LESLIE MASEK TAX MANAGER, LUTZ
It’s hard to believe that the last two months of 2024 have arrived. This time of year often means that the business community is busy completing year-end tasks and aiming to meet deadlines before the year ends.
As stressful as the end of the year can be, it is also a prime opportunity for companies to take the time to do some advanced planning for the new year and beyond.
“Year-end is a powerful opportunity to assess all aspects of your business,” said Tim Mittan, district director for SBA Nebraska. “The key question is, ‘What do you want to know about your business, and how will that information help you plan for the future?’ Creating a year-end plan empowers you to lay out employee steps and allow each department to prepare.”
Prime opportunity
Year-end occurs at different times for various companies, but creating a comprehensive plan that spans one calendar or fiscal year to the next

yields both immediate and long-term benefits. Companies that make time for strategic planning are generally better positioned to address internal and market challenges as well as maximize opportunities strategically.
“The review list should contain, but is not limited to, financial statement reviews including income and cash flow statements, reviewing any contracts with vendors or suppliers and reconciling accounts receivables,” Mittan said. “All marketing, sales and production numbers should be compared to the year’s plan or last year’s numbers to see if there is growth.
The old adage “failure to plan is planning to fail” is particularly true for small businesses, especially startups. According to LivePlan.com, one of the main reasons for new ventures’ demise is a lack of business planning, be it in marketing, labor forecasting, or benchmark analysis.
Lack of planning doesn’t mean lack of a business plan itself, but failure to consistently revisit, analyze and update as necessary according to changing metrics.
“Part of the plan should contain a company self-assessment,” Mittan

better prepared when tax time rolls around.”
J.P. Morgan also reminds small business owners that financial matters go beyond the company’s performance and compensation and benefits provided to employees, to include moves the owners of the business should make themselves. Donating to charities, making gifts before year-end and brushing up on changes in retirement savings, with the help of a qualified tax professional are all good moves in the name of personal finance.
Setting targets
Masek noted that many business owners make mistakes in their year-end planning by failing to set specific goals and objectives for

productivity, sales and various other business metrics. This can throw the best-laid strategies into disarray when employees don’t know what they’re working toward.
“Vague and unclear goals will likely cause confusion among departments, which can be a demotivator,” she said. “If individuals are confused, it will be difficult to tell when a goal is even met or how it was met.
“Companies also often set overly ambitious goals, which can also be a demotivator. Businesses should consider resource limitations
and potential roadblocks before setting goals to make them more achievable.”
In addition to specificity, Masek encouraged business owners to look for milestones in performance that can be celebrated, thereby keeping morale and engagement high as employees push toward greater performance.
“Being able to measure goals, helping individuals stay on track and stay motivated often comes down to celebrating small achievements as a way to hold individuals accountable and help them realize that the

goals are realistic and achievable,” she said.
“One way I like to think about goals is, if a goal can’t be measured, how do you know when it’s achieved?”
End goals in mind
Depending on where the owner is in their career life cycle, succession planning and exit strategies might also be required during year-end planning.
“We begin with the end in mind, as the expression goes. To us, this means looking ahead to the beginning of the fourth quarter of a business leader’s personal time in action, which may be five to seven more working years,” said Nick Niemann, family business continuity attorney and exit planning attorney with McGrath North.
“As you enter your fourth quarter, various family and business dynamics change in a big way which may often go unrecognized until it is too late. We recommend not waiting until the two-minute warning to develop what we refer to as a client’s fourth quarter game plan.”
Niemann said not unlike other aspects of business planning, exit or succession planning must be regularly revisited to allow for changes in timeline, successors or many other factors that occur during the life of a business.
“We follow a couple of simple, but very effective, mindsets: ‘Go for great. Don’t wait for perfect,’ and ‘Recognize all plans are firm until changed,’” he said. “Just as we visit our family physician for an annual checkup, we suggest at least an annual checkup for the fourth quarter game plan.”
“This is best understood by realizing that all business leaders will absolutely face three distinct exits: from active-duty leadership, from ownership and from this life. These may occur at the same time or at two or three different times, but each requires that you deploy certain main plays in advance, provided you want to help assure continued success for yourself, your family and your colleagues.”

UNDERSTANDING OF COMPLIANCE IS KEY TO TAX PLANNING
DOUG MORRIS PARTNER, MCFARLIN & BROKKE PC

Preparing your small business taxes and ensuring compliance is critical. But for many business owners, it can feel overwhelming to stay on top of the numerous tax laws and legislative changes that happen annually.
Where should you start? What are the best strategies to ensure everything is covered?
Rely on the professionals
Doug Morris, partner at McFarlin & Brokke PC, explained that all businesses should consider investing in a licensed tax professional, like a certified public accountant, as this is the best option to simplify the process of preparing for taxes.
“There are far too many tax laws and legislative changes to advise business owners to figure it out without professional help,” he said. “Legislative changes have occurred more frequently and are ongoing.
“In just the state of Nebraska, recent legislative changes include property tax credits, pass-through entity tax elections, and income tax rate reductions scheduled to drop the highest marginal bracket from 6.84% to 3.99% by 2027. At the federal level, the largest change forthcoming is the expiration of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act at the end of 2025.”
Remember the basics
Joshua Bruursema, tax manager at Hayes & Associates, noted that while there are always changes and updates to tax laws, it never hurts to be reminded of the basics. That starts with making sure all accounting records are maintained accurately and prepared promptly.
“Having this first step addressed will help with the ability of a business to file a timely and accurate business tax return, which will also affect any personal tax return that may need to use the data from

the business’s tax return,” he said. “It will also assist a business by allowing them to do more accurate tax planning for the future, no matter what types of laws or rules may update or change. This is really the ideal foundation a business wants to have to ensure that they have the opportunity to maximize their tax position each year.”
Anthony Pasternak, tax partner and market leader for Forvis Mazars, reiterated the importance of business leaders surrounding themselves with a team of experts who can make sure the company is up to speed on all financial planning and tax preparations.
“While it can be helpful to listen to others, it’s possibly dangerous to assume that a friend’s tax strategies apply to your situation without proper research or consulting a tax adviser,” he said. “Businesses should consider working with professionals who have the necessary capabilities and capacity to serve them when it comes to tax guidance and preparation. The landscape is always evolving, and it’s important to have trusted advisers who place a high value on client service in your corner.”
Business owners should also recognize that tax compliance relates to filing tax returns before the due date, reporting each source of income, accurately deducting allowable expenses, and then reporting all those details to both federal and state tax authorities.
Leo Panzer, CPA at Infinity CPA Group, said it is necessary to have bookkeeping transactions accurately classified and recorded in the ledgers of the business.
“An accurate ‘profit and loss’ provides the business owner and the tax preparer the necessary tax information to prepare a complete and accurate tax return,” he said. “A good business decision by an owner is to use a CPA with extensive tax knowledge to prepare tax returns allowing for proper filing and compliance with the tax laws.”
Small businesses are the very heartbeat of the United States economy. Therefore, staying compliant and paying taxes accurately and on time, small businesses are contributing to a stronger, more robust community and state. Being committed to tax compliance funds essential public services, supports local and national government, and keeps up the momentum of economic growth and expansion. While working with tax and accounting professionals is key, there are certain things that small businesses can do to make sure they are preparing well.
“Avoid the natural tendency to delay record-keeping,” Pasternak said. “Staying on top of it will make tax season easier and yield better outcomes, as you won’t be scrambling to gather the necessary records. Also, understanding how your choice of entity impacts your tax filings is crucial. Whether you organize your business as an LLC, C corporation, or
S corporation, each has a different set of tax compliance issues. Using technology tools to streamline or automate reporting may help small businesses create bandwidth for value-added activities.”
Must-knows
Panzer reminds business owners that for the remainder of 2024 and into 2025, there is an allowable tax deduction for small, qualified businesses that are profitable.
“Qualified business income (QBI) is a phantom 20% tax deduction applied against NET business income, allowing for an individual tax deduction,” he explained. “Also, Nebraska income tax regulations allow owners of business real estate to claim a refundable tax credit based on property taxes paid. There is an online lookup tool and county parcel ID search tool to assist with this calculation.”
Pasternak said that there are several significant provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) that will expire after 2025 that businesses should start planning now.
“Due to potential tax rate increases and other changes, taxpayers may want to consider multiyear projections to determine what strategies not only benefit them in the current year, but also in the future,” he said.
Morris recommended that businesses consider and continuously reconsider organizational structures — such as structuring their entity as a sole proprietorship, limited liability company, partnership, corporation or S corporation.
“Businesses will want to plan proactively regularly to review and take advantage of available deductible expenses and tax credits and also forecast tax liabilities to avoid unwanted surprises like large tax liabilities owed plus penalties and interest,” Morris shared. “For example, taxpayers could be subject to underpayment penalties for failure to remit estimated income taxes quarterly.”
Bruursema advised small businesses to pay close attention to the many tax scams that are out there, too. For example, the IRS will never call to demand a payment, and they won’t ask for money to be wired or paid with a prepaid card.
“Businesses should be aware that they are not exempt from the scams and scare tactics that plague individual taxpayers,” he explained. “Be wary of tax preparers who won’t sign a return or try to offer to prepare a return using information you know not to be true. Also, social media can mislead you about tax credit availability and try to tell you that the IRS is trying to keep secrets from you about what you can claim.”

Little Movements Apparel
Almost six years ago, Marissa Whalen, a young mom of three, met a fellow mother of three, Lyndsey Haag, at church. This would represent the earnest start of Little Movements Apparel, a series of brand sell-outs and, true to its name, a movement to build a community of likeminded women with active lifestyles and affordable styles.
The mutual interests and similarities between Whalen and Haag didn’t stop at their three kids; they were both newer to town and enjoyed walking, running and being active. Naturally, they started running together. It was during one of those runs that the metaphorical lightbulb went off.
“We began talking about how our leggings were older than our kids and about how difficult it was to find affordable leggings,” Whalen said. “We were just two moms on a budget who were noticing a gap in the soon-toexplode athletic wear market. We spent a few months researching and coming up with a business plan, presented it to our husbands, and the rest is history.”
Finding their brand
Starting from their basements, the founders had minimal overhead costs, focusing solely on inventory and selling exclusively on free social platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
“We wanted to be different and we didn’t know any other company that focused on athletic wear and athleisure,” she said. “Plus, this was the problem we noticed — finding affordable activewear.”
As they started the business, the duo also became very aware that it was going to be about much more than selling clothes.
“It wasn’t long until we created a community of like-minded women,” she explained. “Soon our slogan became, ‘Encouraging movement each day through affordable style.’”
Whalen said they began posting workouts in their own clothing and modeling what an active lifestyle looks like for busy, young moms who also worked out.
“Our slogan today lands at: ‘Encouraging women’s potential with

confidence-boosting activewear,’” she said.

The mission is resonating. From 2018 to 2021, Whalen said they only sold online and at pop-up events.
“This forced us to really put ourselves out there, we depended on good content, photos, and creative marketing which has carried our brand so far,” she added. “We depended on our online customers and realized that we could create relationships online with these customers and even name products after them. In a sense, it felt like our customers were truly a part of the ins and outs of the business.”
Brick and mortar
They began subleasing from another boutique in the Fallbrook area of Lincoln between September 2022 and September 2023, the roots of what would become a physical storefront.
“This was an amazing opportunity for me to be able to understand if this would be a good move for our business,” Whalen recalled. “I paid her rent, we split the store staffing hours completely in half, and it worked so well.”
This gave the confidence-boosting entrepreneur just the sense of confidence to open up her own space. While having a working lunch with a mentor, Whalen began exploring a few spaces. She happened upon Alicia Reisinger of Wax Buffalo, who acquainted Whalen with a space near her second location in the Prescott neighborhood.
“The space was an old karate studio and open as could be, the most perfect opportunity for our first storefront after a couple months of adding a few feminine touches,” she said.
Whalen described it as a “happy space.”
“I began subleasing out to a couple of women-owned businesses as well, to return the favor that I was given in Fallbrook the year before,” she said.
“Amazing things happen when you collaborate with women.”
She invited House of Colour Lincoln and their business, The Color Collab, to run out of the space, too.
“It has been received well by our community and we are thankful to have an official flagship store to invite the community into,” Whalen noted.
Building a movement
Throughout its history, several milestones signaled to Whalen that, as she put it, “we had something special at our fingertips.” The first notable was the response to its fundraising campaign for flood relief, which occurred in 2019 when the business was just a few months old.
“We only had 1,000 followers at the time,” she recalled. “And we decided that we were going to see what we could do — we had many friends and family members that were directly impacted by this.”
Little Movements collaborated with a local printer to design a T-shirt with 100% of proceeds from its sale going to Nebraska flood relief efforts.
“We were able to donate $15,000,” she said. “This set the tone for trust,
heart and seriousness with our community.”
Over the next three years, Whalen said they experimented with creating their own brands.
“What we noticed was that every time we would launch a Little Movements brand, it gave us another opportunity to draw nearer to our community and launch a one-of-a-kind product that you couldn’t find anywhere else,” she said. “We would always sell out of these brand launches within minutes. This told us that our community craved community.”
Frequent requests from that community for a sports bra with padding sewn in (instead of removable cups) would eventually lead to the development of Core Movements.
“The problem was that I couldn’t find this product,” Whalen said. “It looked like it was up to us to bring it to life.”
Surveys with its email lists validated the desire for a bra with built-in padding. Securing a Launch LNK grant helped to make that dream product a reality.
“I was able to use the funding to conduct research, be connected with a designer and manufacturer, build the prototypes with our community, market the products, get a patent on the product and officially launch the bras in November of 2022, and completely sell out in just 22 minutes on our website,” Whalen said. “This set the tone for an official product that was completely ours, patent and all. We just received funding to do four more launches in September, October, November and December.”
Moving forward, they plan to launch the Core brand every month for the remainder of the year.
“The cool thing is that we are supporting women sewers in Omaha while we are doing this,” she said. “They will be creating 500 bras and leggings for us each month until the end of the year. In fact, every part of our business and every expense resides in Nebraska.”
In the long term, they are thinking bigger with larger-scale manufacturers outside of the state and overseas.
“My main goal is to continue getting a product on the market that isn’t there yet, and advocate for women and what they actually want and need to live an active lifestyle comfortably and confidently,” Whalen said. “We also plan to expand our brand to more and more products over time. So, in the future, you can look for more performance wear, inspired by you and made by us.”

BBB LAUNCHES NEWSLETTER TO SUPPORT
CONSUMERS TO MAXIMIZE HOLIDAY SHOPPING SUCCESS
As the 2024 holiday shopping season approaches, consumers are preparing for a potentially shorter timeline, with American Thanksgiving falling on November 28. Retailers are expected to begin advertising early sales and may extend store hours to maximize the shorter window. According to Deloitte’s annual holiday retail forecast, sales are projected to increase between 2.3% to 3.3%, with total spending possibly reaching $1.59 trillion. Despite the slowdown in inflation, purchasing power will still be impacted as prices remain stable without significant decreases, encouraging retailers to focus on maximizing profits during this critical season.
Like previous years, many consumers will kick off their shopping early, and retailers anticipate a surge in online shopping. E-commerce is expected to grow by as much as 9% compared to 2023, driven by convenience and variety. However, this growth comes with heightened risks. The BBB Scam Tracker Risk Report highlighted that online shopping scams accounted for 41% of all scams reported in 2023. With potential product shortages, shoppers may be more vulnerable to fraudulent websites or offers while trying to secure hard-to-find items.
2. Do your research: Use BBB.org and customer reviews to vet retailers before buying. Understand the store’s return policy and check if the product includes a warranty. Additionally, learn how to spot phony reviews.
3. Be cautious with deals that seem too good to be true: Shoppers who fall for low-priced offers are more likely to lose money. Don’t shop based on price alone, especially for high-demand products.
4. Avoid fake websites: Check the URL for “HTTPS” and look for common red flags, like poor grammar or lack of contact information. A “card declined” message may also signal a potential card theft scam.
5. Don’t rely on professional photos: Scammers often use legitimate-looking images to create convincing websites. Products like pets, clothing, or vehicles are frequently featured in fraudulent listings.

Integrity is incredibly important to me. It’s about being true to yourself, being honest, and having strong morals. These qualities define who you are and explain why you act the way you do.
What do you look for when choosing a job?
I look for a role that allows me to do what I love and supports me financially. While benefits matter, the work environment is key. I thrive in places where I can voice my opinions without fear and build strong relationships with coworkers and managers.
How does receiving this scholarship impact you?
This scholarship is a huge help! Students often don’t realize the time it takes to apply for scholarships until they’re actually doing it. I’m extremely grateful for the BBB Student of Integrity Scholarship. It not only supports my education but also gives me a chance to discuss values that matter to me. It’s inspiring to see BBB so engaged with its scholarship recipients.

Structured Products –Buyer Beware
There’s no such thing as a free lunch. This is what comes to mind when clients ask us about structured products. These are highly-customized and complex securities that are often sold with the promise of limited downside risk yet attractive upside –like a hybrid between a stock and bond. They are called “structured” because they reshape the original investment’s risk/return profile. For example, a structured product may advertise having 150% upside of the stock market and only 90% of the downside. However, the devil is in the details. Structured products take many different forms but usually involve purchasing a bond and then using derivatives (options, futures, swaps, etc.) to tie performance to a specific or group of assets, such as a stock index, currency, or commodity. While they make look compelling on the surface, some investors fail to understand their complex payoff structures, high fees, low liquidity, and unfavorable taxation. Many times, investors would have just been better off owning a combination of stocks and bonds instead.
Here are some key aspects of structured products to be aware of.
One primary reason that structured products remain popular among financial professionals is that they carry high fees and commissions. It’s not unusual to see annual fees on structured products in the 1.5% to 2.0% range, which is meaningfully higher than the average ETF (exchange traded fund) or mutual fund.
Understand
the Opportunity Cost
Opportunity cost is the potential gain from other options that weren’t chosen. A big draw for structured products is that they can limit downside risk. However, there’s a tradeoff. Structured products cap the upside potential as well, which can be significant as we’ve seen recently in the stock market. These securities are also time constrained, meaning that the desired move in the underlying asset must occur withing a certain period. Yes, stocks can be volatile, but they can be held indefinitely and theoretically have unlimited upside potential.
Low Liquidity
It’s incredibly difficult to get out of a structured product early. The SEC noted, “A liquid market for structured notes does not exist. If you want to sell your structured note before it matures, you might have to do so at a price less than the amount you paid for it, or you may not be able to sell it at all.”
Unfavorable Taxation
Many structured products are treated as debt instruments, so gains are taxed at the ordinary income rate – not the capital gains rate. High fees coupled with a 30%-plus tax rate for high-net worth individuals makes the risk/reward difficult for such investors.
In our opinion, there’s usually always a better solution than a structured product. We’re not aware of any investor that compounded their way to wealth using these instruments. Structured products put a high price on managing volatility that oftentimes is not worth it. Midwest Leaders is a weekly section showcasing individuals who are making an impact in our community through their professional and volunteer endeavors. If you’d like to nominate someone for this section, email news@mbj.com with the individual name, position, company and email.
JUANITA INCONTRO
Bio:
Juanita Incontro is a mortgage lender by day, and a business owner by night. Juanita and her husband, Ricky, opened Sensory Suite Spot in August of 2024 to offer a safe space for individuals with different sensory levels. In addition to having frosted windows, the salon has adjustable lighting, sound machines, and various sensory items to help individuals feel at ease.
What inspired Sensory Suite Spot?
My sister was the driving force behind Sensory Suite Spot. After facing challenges finding an inclusive space that met her client’s needs, I decided to take matters into my own hands. As a passionate hairstylist, my sister’s dedication to making everyone feel welcome in her chair truly inspired me to create a space that embodies inclusivity.
What is your background in?
I work full-time as a mortgage lender, helping families achieve their dream of homeownership. I’m deeply passionate about educating my community and giving back. I believe in the power of knowledge, whether someone is ready to buy a home now or needs some guidance. It’s incredibly fulfilling to witness families reach this milestone and then assist them with their next homes.
A friend or family member is visiting Omaha for the first time. Where are you taking them?
I would plan a fun-filled day at the Omaha Henery Doorly Zoo, followed by dinner at Nicola’s Italian Wine & Fare downtown. To finish the day, we would stop by Ted and Wally’s for ice cream.
What is the best piece of advice someone has given you?
The best advice I’ve received is to enjoy life and not stress over the small things, as there’s always a solution to any problem. This perspective has helped me maintain balance and focus on what truly matters.
After a hard day, how do you take care of your mental health and avoid burnout?
Working out helps me unwind, but on particularly tough days, I love spending time with my kids. Their energy and joy have an instant uplifting effect on my mood. Our Sunday dinner tradition is a great way to recharge and connect with family, which is super important to me.

‘Coolest Thing Made In Nebraska’ CENTER PIVOT MACHINE OUTPERFORMS TOILET PAPER FOR
BY CINDY GONZALEZ, NEBRASKA EXAMINER, PUBLISHED OCTOBER 29, 2024 ON NEBRASKAEXAMINER.COM
A center pivot irrigation machine washed out toilet paper to be named Tuesday as the 2024 “Coolest Thing Made in Nebraska.”
The winner of the third annual competition — created to bring awareness and excitement to the state’s No. 2 industry, manufacturing — was announced during the Nebraska Manufacturing Summit in La Vista.
Tens of thousands of votes were cast during the bracket-style tournament that kicked off in mid-September, according to the organizer, the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The Valley Center Pivot by Valley Irrigation emerged as champion following several rounds of public voting that started with 16 products.
Runner-up was toilet paper produced by Omaha-based Outlook Nebraska, which, according to its website, is the largest employer of the blind and visually impaired in Nebraska and a seven-state region.
Matt Ondrejko, senior vice president of product excellence and commercialization at Valley Irrigation, which is a Valmont company, accepted the award during the conference.
He called it a testament to “all the work, innovation and dedication that our team pours into every single pivot.”
According to the company, its center pivots have “revolutionized global agriculture.” Used in more than 90 countries, they conserve water, improve crop yields and use cutting-edge technology such as remote management.
“It’s not just a piece of machinery, it’s a symbol of Nebraska ingenuity,” Ondrejko said of the center pivot. “Together we’re proving that the Heartland isn’t just where food grows, it’s where world-changing ideas take root.”
Outlook Nebraska says it is the sole toilet paper manufacturer in Nebraska and an Omaha not-for-profit with a global reach. (Courtesy of Outlook Nebraska and Nebraska Chamber of Commerce and Industry)
The 16 products that started off the tournament were selected from an original pool of about 65 entries. A Leadership Nebraska alumni group of statewide business and nonprofit representatives narrowed that field of nominees. Then the public vote took over for future rounds.
The summit marked a highlight of Manufacturing Month in Nebraska. State officials said

Nebraska’s manufacturing job count, about 109,000, has hit its highest point in more than 20 years, since 2001.
They said the manufacturing industry is second to agriculture in the state and contributes $21.6 billion to Nebraska’s annual gross domestic product, a 57% increase from five years ago.
The 16 products in the tournament were:

FUSION GATHERS EMPLOYEES FOR PROJECT PINK’D FUNDRAISER
In honor of breast cancer awareness month, Fusion held a company outing and fundraiser last month, raising more than $21,000 for breast cancer support and research. The beneficiary was Project Pink’d, an organization that supports those diagnosed with breast cancer in several ways including financially, emotionally, and physically. “Fusion came together and did what we do best that day,” said Amber Barna, Chief Clinical Officer and breast cancer survivor. “I am so proud to be part of this company because of the way our team commits to supporting those around us. The advancements from research and generous donations are saving lives.” Barna shared her story with the company the day before the fundraiser, telling all employees regardless of their gender how important it is to get regular screenings and to support organizations funding cancer research, like Project Pink’d. “When I started treatment in 2009, my doctor told me that my attitude would determine how I felt, and I really didn’t believe him until one day I just felt horrible. I got labs done and was convinced they were going to show that something was off, but I was wrong. The labs looked good, and I realized the only thing that was off was my attitude,” said Barna. “I try to carry that into the rest of my life and my mentoring of other professionals, telling them that no matter the circumstance, your attitude plays a huge role in the outcome.” You can learn more about Project Pink’d and the organization’s mission by visiting projectpinkd.org. About Fusion: Fusion is an Omaha-based healthcare company that exists to create meaningful connections between healthcare travelers and facilities that lead to better patient care and better outcomes for all.
