Introducing the 2022 40 Under 40! Meet our 2022 class of 40 Greater Omaha, Sarpy County and Council Bluffs entrepreneurs, executives and professionals under the age of 40. 2022 Presenting sponsor:

On October 17, the Tri-Faith Initiative and its faith partners celebrated the second anniversary of the opening of the Tri-Faith Center, which marked the completion of a venture that formally originated in 2006 when the Tri-Faith Initiative was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Land was purchased at 132nd and Pacific streets in 2011, and the three houses of worship opened in the ensuing years: Temple Israel in 2013, the American Muslim Institute in 2017, and Countryside Community Church in 2019. The opening of the interfaith center in 2020 signified not only the completion of the TriFaith Commons, but also the culmination of a unique dream, Tri-Faith Initiative Executive Director & co-founder Wendy Goldberg said.

“Our mission for the first 15 years was this first project of co-location of a church, a mosque and a synagogue with an interfaith center, that incredible experiment that doesn’t exist anyplace else in the world,” she said, adding that Tri-Faith’s objective has now shifted: “Our new mission is to cultivate inclusive environments, to advance interfaith relationships and understanding.”

The organization has received worldwide recognition, Goldberg said.

“I think Omaha is proud that this model exists in the middle of Omaha, in the Heartland. We are increasingly hearing from communities around the region — and literally, the world — looking to us to both affirm that religious identity and community bring joy and strife in everyday life, but also acknowledging that religion has a role in public discourse,” she said. “We are creating relationships and opportunities that build trust, to talk about hard things … the glue is that we want to stand together, we want to walk through life together.”

The Tri-Faith Initiative honors the fact that everyone’s spiritual journey is very individual, Goldberg said.

“Sometimes when we’re uncomfortable with someone who’s different than us because of their religious identity or their experience with religion, we don’t know their story. And that’s truly what’s making us uncomfortable or fearful or angry, depending on the person,” she said. “We have an opportunity to invite people in to hear each other’s stories, to get proximate with each other. The Tri-Faith Initiative goal is to be that hub, the Tri-Faith Center is the place where

we want to invite collaboration across interfaith lines.”

Understanding our differences goes beyond religion, Goldberg said.

“We realize that in all of these conversations about race and religion, and gender, and sexual orientation … We want to make sure there are opportunities for people to find more space to be curious about people who are ‘other than’ them.”

All are Welcome

On Sept. 11, Tri-Faith hosted its first United We Walk event, which was open to the public and involved numerous partners representing a spectrum of faiths, to celebrate Omaha’s racial and cultural as well as religious diversity. More than half of the individuals who participate in Tri-Faith events and activities are not members of any of the three congregations located at the Commons, Goldberg said. She characterizes Tri-Faith as a movement, and said the community is welcome to be part of it.

“All of our programming is open to the public,” she explained. “There are opportunities to witness prayer, to break bread, to get to know each other, to learn together.”

Tri-Faith hosts an annual conference on race, religion and social justice that has been held in partnership with the University of Nebraska at Omaha; last summer it involved 30 speakers including thought leaders from across the country. The organization also hosts training and workshops throughout the year around the topic of collaboration, along with customized presentations.

“If you’d like to take a tour, or in turn, invite someone from Tri-Faith to speak at your community group or in your school or at your faith community, there’s the opportunity to request both a speaker or tour

on our website [trifaith.org],” Goldberg said. “We encourage people to do that, and to think of us as a convening place; if you’d like to host an event or meeting to use our space or have us come and do a training for your workforce, we’ll be able to do those things. We’d like to be thought of as a resource.”

Tri-Faith also strives to collaborate with other groups in the community, Goldberg said. A good example is the onsite Unity Garden and Hope Orchard, which started in 2019 with eight raised beds and 20 newly planted orchard trees. Three years later, with 16 raised garden beds and maturing trees, 4,000 pounds of produce was cultivated for donation to five different organizations, project leader Bonni Leiserowitz said.

“We have about 20 people that are totally dedicated to this project to make it better and better. There are about 50 other people that help with many other parts and pieces that make things work. Then there are still other people that support us by a donation of supplies or money here and there. The circle grows,” she said. “Our goal is to have the three faith partners with us each time we are tending the garden. And we welcome all that come to us who are not in any way associated with any of the faith partners.”

It’s part of a bigger picture, Leiserowitz said.

“We are proof we can and do live together in harmony, not hate,” she said.

Opportunities for Hope

“It shows the generosity of Omaha to raise the dollars to build these beautiful facilities that are open to help model for the world what’s

possible, but we don’t want to stop there,” Goldberg said. “We really want to be a convener for Omaha or our region or the world, and we want to cultivate these spaces to advance interfaith relationships and understanding. That’s what’s next.

“We’re stronger if we can find the opportunities to get to know each other, to hear each other. And what we’re saying is we don’t need to agree. We need to coexist peacefully without anger and harm … When you ask someone how they came to their belief, in hearing their story, they become human. And [you] have less opportunities to be afraid and more opportunities for hope.”

The concepts of pluralism and peaceful co-existence open doors to conversation — not conversion — Goldberg said.

“We advocate for religious freedom without proselytizing; that is core to our basic assumption at Tri-Faith,” she explained. “We also model how diverse religious communities and nonreligious communities can engage with each other in beneficial ways and maintain their distinct identities, while thriving, to defend each other’s

right to thrive.”

Tri-Faith strives to create the opportunity to help people gain the skills to have civil and even productive conversations about not only religion but also politics and other issues that can be divisive or taboo, Goldberg said.

“Sometimes it’s going to be uncomfortable, or sometimes it’s going to be inconvenient. And that’s okay, too; we can still find hope,” she said. “We really want to change the narrative. We have these debates rooted in violence, and it’s an unhealthy narrative. And our politics are about fear and anger. Those things lead to oppression, sometimes for religious minorities, as well. And that’s a threat to our society.”

Goldberg again emphasized hope, along with perseverance.

“Peaceful coexistence in the middle of chaos and uncertainty of what we’ve lived through in the last three years is hard work, and it’s exhausting,” she said. “But it’s also that beacon of hope that we all need to stay true to, it’s the guiding star to say, ‘This is where we’re heading. And we’re heading there together.’”

Transcending Buzzwords

Inequity and exclusivity in professional, community, societal and other spheres were not created overnight. Yet, many organizations and partnerships have been forged to take on the consequences and effects of systems that have embodied everything but diversity, equity and inclusion.

When asked about the genesis of the Center for Diversity and Community Engagement at Nebraska Methodist College, Director Kiley Petersmith alluded to a

hallmark of the college: fostering cultural diversity and inclusivity in individuals’ professional practices that “extends beyond coursework.”

“It is embedded in our culture and backed by our core values of caring, excellence, holism, learning and respect,” Petersmith said.

She alluded to enhanced curriculum, encompassing holistic education on disparities and “associated health determinants,” and aims to cultivate positive

social change and active citizen leadership. Learning is “book-ended” by a Community Engagement 101 orientation and the Educated Citizen capstone course to integrate participants’ roles as heath care professionals and educated citizens. Students are also exposed to CDCE mobile screening clinics, which Petersmith said emphasize prevention.

“We also utilize mobile units to improve the point of access to health care, especially for disproportionately affected populations,”

she said.

For instance, its mobile diabetes center conducted 62 site visits, served 811 people, identified 370 at-risk pre-diabetics, visited 65-plus sites for vaccines, and administered 2,685 and 768 COVID-19 and influenza vaccine doses, respectively.

Petersmith further spotlighted notable strides made in the CDCE’s first six months. Progress included the creation of an NMC DEI strategic plan, 75 community partners to support clinics and events, collegewide

DEI-related training, the launch of an LGBTQ+ group, and ongoing needs assessments for faculty and staff – not limited to one-on-one meetings to pinpoint needs, concerns and opportunities.

Future efforts include launching a DEI advisory board, undergraduate community transformation course (spring 2023), work with the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) faculty senate committee, and college-wide efforts to elevate diversity among students and faculty/staff.

Thus far, Petersmith appeared buoyed by its community partnerships, saying: “We … are continuing to flex and model our clinics based on the needs they observe. As a result, we are continually seeing more potential partners reach out to engage and collaborate

on needs.”

A Transformative Anchor

A global network of grassroots LGBTQ+ centers and organizations, CenterLink found that just seven of the country’s top 50 cities are not served by a local LGBTQ+ center. Omaha is one of them.

“Many are … rightfully frustrated these services aren’t already available,” said JohnCarl Denkovich, director of OmahaForUs, the nonprofit dedicated to growing LGBTQ+ focused, culturally-responsive programming in a new, local center. “Decades of underresourcing this type of care means we have that much further to go.”

Denkovich noted that OmahaForUs receives daily emails, calls and website inquiries from those seeking referrals for LGBTQ+ services and support.

“The fact that many of these requested

services have no secondary referral option tells us it’s an emergency,” they said.

In late June, the organization announced the launch of its community support

campaign, aimed at raising $75,000 in 75 days.

“The $75,000 raised from our #75k75day campaign ensures we could secure an annual lease with ample space for both the center’s operations and programming, as well as the subsidized co-location of local, LGBTQ+ serving organizations,” Denkovich explained. “So many individuals, local businesses and nonprofit organizations have already reached out to discuss partnership or volunteering.

“As thankful as I am for this outreach, I’m only one person. Until we raise the funds necessary to hire the staff we need, to me the most meaningful gift anyone can give is a donation of any amount.“

Tax-deductible donations can be made online at the OmahaForUs.org website or via Venmo @OmahaForUs.

“The center is a transformative resource. In the short term and long term, a center positively impacts social determinants of health for LGBTQ+ individuals and families,” Denkovich stated. “Whether or not someone is LGBTQ+, everyone benefits from a center offering these dedicated services. With

as many as 85,000 self-identified LGBTQ+ people calling the Omaha metro home, but few LGBTQ+ resources, a center anchors the community.”

Among other implications of its efforts, Denkovich said a local center supports the state’s ongoing battle with “brain drain” and workforce development.

DEI on the Fast Track

There are myriad employee and business benefits to fostering an environment that allows employees to be their best, according to Kristen South, Union Pacific Railroad senior director – corporate communications and media relations. South noted the railroad supports a diverse culture and inclusivity –ranging from improved morale and safety to better decision-making, problem-solving and strategic thinking.

“In 2020 Union Pacific set aggressive diversity goals to be reached over the next decade,” South said. “By 2030, we want to increase our people of color population from 29.4% to 40% and double our female population to 11%.”

She referenced strides toward these goals, with its people of color (POC) increasing from 29.4% to 31.3% between January 2020 and December 2021. Other efforts to reach its diversity goals revolve around inclusivity in the hiring process.

“We’re removing bias by using software tools to confirm gender-neutral language in all job postings, as well as providing video demonstrations and visual cues during physical abilities tests,” South added.

Union Pacific’s reimagined college recruiting spans online networking to tap into a larger, increasingly diverse pool of students from across the country – difficult to obtain via in-person university events. Additionally, she spotlighted its Second Chance hiring program, which debuted last fall. Designed to give formerly incarcerated individuals a “fair chance” at employment, South said the program aligns with DEI initiatives and builds a diverse pipeline and workforce now and into the future.

Pivoting from new to time-tested initiatives, South said its 40-year-old Supplier Diversity Program “has never been more

critical to supporting our [environmental, social and governance] efforts.”

“Our spending with diverse suppliers grew 23% from 2020 to 2021 and has more than doubled since 2017,” she explained.

Civil rights-era programs were designed to spur the use of vendor-businesses owned by underrepresented populations, and Union Pacific was reportedly the first Class I Railroad to establish a formal, company-wide Supplier Diversity program. In its first year, $10 million was spent with minority- and woman-owned businesses. Today, the program formerly centered on reporting spend and supplier counts is focused on outreach resources to connect and collaborate with businesses.

Generating Healthy Culture

OPPD’s efforts to support DEI go back three decades. But a focus to recruit ethnically-diverse talents and better reflect customers “deepened” in 2015, according to Director of Diversity and Inclusion Joyce Cooper. Fifteen strategic directives emerged,

as did its Corporate Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Strategy. Since then, the strategy’s 10 internal and external goals have been updated twice to adapt to business needs. Most recently, its D&I department committed to serving in strategic consulting roles to leadership within the business and their teams.

Javier Fernandez, who succeeded Timothy Burke as president and CEO this summer, further directed execs to develop and implement DEI action plans aligned with its Powering the Future 2050 strategic vision.

Cooper highlighted dozens of OPPD leadership, training, and other types of resources, partnerships, and programs. More recent highlights included the 2020 Town Hall on Race, an all-employee meeting co-sponsored by OPPD’s executive leadership team to spark “courageous

conversations.”

“The conversations about race continue through small-group discussions and trainings delivered across the different business units,” she said.

Efforts are bearing fruit; Cooper said OPPD has seen “increased representation on every level of the company.” In addition to Fernandez, she referenced the promotions of a Black woman and member of the LGBTQ+ community to key VP roles, and how women make up 50% and 27% of boards of directors and executive leadership teams, respectively.

“There has also been an increased sense of belonging and feeling psychologically safe,” Cooper said, alluding to increased contributions and potential industrytransforming innovation.

“Many companies like OPPD are on the same journey,” she said. “When we all work

for everyone to be heard, valued and respected in whatever position they hold within the organization,” said Dell Nared, director of diversity, equity & inclusion at the Greater Omaha Chamber, which put on the conference. “Research and our CODE Assessment tell us that creating a diverse workforce increases engagement and morale, which is true; however, it is not about how diverse your workplace is. The question is, ‘Are you educating your

organization on how to keep it?’”

The assessment refers to the Chamber’s Commitment to Opportunity, Diversity and Equity (CODE), characterized by its Employer Coalition and CEOs for CODE groups to expand DEI in workplaces and break down barriers, and to drive changes at the executive level, respectively.

The first step in sustaining workplace diversity, Nared said, is to ensure all employees’ traditions and backgrounds are

respected and valued.

“Organizing diversity and inclusion awareness events and training activities at all levels of the organization, starting from the top, will show that DEI is a part of the company’s DNA,” he said.

Another nod to the many topics covered in the conference’s breakout sessions, Nared referred to nine ways companies can achieve workplace DEI. The journey each company takes to “get there” varies. But the process

boils down to creating a comprehensive strategy; setting key performance indicators; building fair hiring; adding DEI conversations into onboarding, meetings and website communications offering DEI education; achieving pay equity; carving out employee resource groups; developing norms on how religious, multicultural and holiday traditions and practices are recognized; and being pronoun friendly.

Flavor Fusion Meets Fast-Casual

OKRA AFRICAN GRILL FINDS HOME IN OMAHA

The journey that led to what would become Okra African Grill is hard to imagine for those who consistently have food in their bellies and who have only known nations free of modern-day, civil wars and recurring threats of violence.

Nina Sodji is introducing an increasing number of Omahans to Togolese cuisine and a rich tapestry of related cuisines and flavors. While the dishes are firmly rooted in the West African country, the restaurant in the Aksarben Village area is 6,200 miles away and seemingly worlds apart from Sodji’s native Togo.

Her grandmother, Agnes, awakened the family every Saturday at 7 a.m. with lunch-style meals. Grandma would also pick up grocery items for herself.

“It was my favorite time of the week, hanging out with her,” Sodji recalled. “I later found out that all the groceries were to feed the children of her neighborhood.”

Sodji’s mother picked up the torch after her grandma passed away, offering meals to anyone who needed them. Sodji pitched in by helping to put the meals together.

Later on, Sodji moved to the United States and began a career in nursing.

“There was a civil war that broke out in 1990,” she explained. “My sister and her husband had moved to the U.S by then with her first son. He was born into my arms and, as the only aunt, I doted on him.

“He was six months old when they left Togo. He started to develop some health issues that a prominent doctor told us were OK.”

When she joined the family almost four years later, her nephew had developed cerebral palsy due to jaundice contracted in the womb.

“All the doctor needed to do to save him was a simple blood transfusion,” Sodji

said, noting that the child’s brother had experienced similar health challenges. He was born healthy in Omaha.

Sodji was drawn to midwifery.

“Just like nursing,” she said, “I’m more fulfilled by serving and filling a need in the community.”

Made with Heart

Sodji continued to cook on the weekends as a “side hobby.” There was a surge of Togolese students in Omaha who didn’t have the cooking skills, nor did they know where to find products to make meals or places to find the familiar foods that they loved.

“I was born into the hands of an entrepreneur queen,” Sodji further explained. “My mom owned her own tobacco shop, properties and lands in Togo.”

So, perhaps, it wasn’t as much of a leap for Sodji to parlay her unique combination of caring, cooking prowess and community-mindedness into a grocery, Goyi Store, in 2004.

There was a need, according to Sodji, for foods and flavors that reflected Togo’s complicated history of colonization, invasion and political instability. One can taste the presence of France, Spain, Germany, India in Togolese meals, not to mention the influence of neighboring countries such as Ghana, Benin and Burkina Faso.

She also referenced demand for ready-made sauces and items that, until then, had been catered from her house.

“Right away, I put a hood system in the back of the grocery and opened a small café there,” Sodji said. “It spread like wildfire.”

Sodji has applied lessons learned from her earliest ventures toward present-day Okra African Grill. Namely, she took away the need for training and skill as a “culinarian” and in business management. She balanced culinary school at Metropolitan Community College with rearing two young children. Sodji also alluded to firsthand experience in understanding the importance of “location, location, location” and described the quick service, casual dining set-up as a “game-changer.”

A Winning Recipe

Adaptation and innovation is seemingly baked into the restaurant; it first opened at the onset of the pandemic.

“Opening Okra African Grill during COVID-19 in 2020 really taught me the flexibility of an entrepreneur,” Sodji said. “There were so many ups and downs and turns … it forces you to ‘ride the waves,’ to be spontaneous and very adaptable.”

The pandemic also informed the development of Okra’s menu and specialties.

“My menu is not all Togolese,” she explained. “I came up with the vegan items from a request … it also helped me build a better online presence with DoorDash, Uber Eats and Grubhub.”

Furthermore, Sodji said Okra merges her African cooking skills and culinary skills.

“The education piece was the most important and crucial, because I discovered that people ‘eat with their eyes,’” she added. “People don’t eat what they don’t know, but creating an easy, transparent set-up, makes it more approachable. All the ingredients are readily available in the U.S. The combination of ingredients is what’s not familiar.”

Additionally, she characterized the ease of introducing a vegan and gluten-free menu, due to the abundance of corn, beans and vegetables in Okra’s dishes.

Since Okra reopened this summer in what Sodji called a “to-die-for” location at 608 South 72nd St., business has been heating up quickly. Okra’s status as the 2022 winner of the Midlands African Chamber’s Pitch Black business competition award has further shown Sodji that the restaurant is needed, valued, and tells other black-owned small businesses “it’s possible to rise to the top.”

“The win,” she continued, “brought an awareness of our presence in the community.”

She said to expect big things from Okra African Grill.

“Our vision is to become an international brand that educates the world on gourmet African cuisine by capturing the deep history and meaning behind the ingredients of a traditional meal,” Sodji stated.

CORE BANK IS DONATING DOLLARS AND DIAPERS

Core Bank is partnering with SHARE Omaha as the presenting sponsor of #GivingTuesday402 with a diaper drive that began Nov. 1 and is encouraging Omahans to donate dollars for diapers.

As a locally owned bank, Core Bank has deep roots in the community, which is why the team is working to create a better future for local families on Giving Tuesday.

In partnership with Nebraska Diaper Bank, the Core Bank diaper drive runs through November 28. During the month, donors can drop off diapers at any of the five Core Bank locations: 17807 Burke St., 12100 W Center Rd., 13220 Birch Dr., 16805 Q St. in Omaha and 11305 Cumberland Dr. in Papillion.

“Nebraska Diaper Bank is excited to partner with Core Bank for their second annual diaper drive leading up to Giving Tuesday,” said Anna Lehotyak, development director at the Nebraska Diaper Bank. “Diaper need affects over 13,000 babies in the Greater Omaha area.”

The community can also support the drive by donating dollars for diapers via text, a new option

this year. Givers can text the word DIAPERS to 402-383-0997 to contribute. At the end of the drive on November 29 — Giving Tuesday —Core Bank will be at the Nebraska Diaper Bank, 9100 F St. in Omaha, wrapping and organizing the diaper donations for distribution.

Nebraska Diaper Bank currently distributes about 140,000 diapers to the community each month, according to Lehotyak.

“Community drives are vital to our operations,” she said. “We are so grateful to Core Bank for helping

SARAH MORRIS-ROTERMUND FINDS CREATIVE

SOLUTIONS

In an industry that is always changing, Sarah Morris-Rotermund has had to learn how to step out of her comfort zone to be successful in the marketing world. She is director of marketing at Lamson Dugan & Murray LLP.

“Marketing isn’t always black and white. So, for someone like me, yes, I love to be creative, but I do see a world of very black and white sometimes,” she said. “It’s just a challenge to figure out where that balance is and how to get outside your box and actually think of different ways to go about a solution or get a result and there isn’t one right way all the time.”

Her ability to adapt to changes and find creative solutions has helped her during her time as an inhouse marketer in a variety of industries. While Morris-Rotermund spent many years at Cox Media, she is now tackling the world of marketing for a law firm.

Morris-Rotermund attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she originally studied pharmacy.

“I actually started out as a pre-pharmacy major,” she said. “And I learned very quickly that that was not going to be a thing. Just math and numbers and science were not my strong suit, words were, and so I actually went the journalism route, majoring in journalism.”

During her junior year of college, Morris-Rotermund was taking her final capstone class when she realized that she was not interested in news reporting and instead wanted to do something more creative. This led her to also major in advertising her senior year.

After graduating, she began her career in internal marketing at Cox Media. She worked with corporate teams across America to develop a marketing strategy.

“So being an inhouse marketer is really where I found my strengths, and my focus and my passion,” she said. “And then building on top of that is, is there a niche that I really want to become an expert in? And that has led me to the legal marketing world.”

She landed the position of marketing director at Lamson Dugan & Murray LLP.

“My biggest focus is to figure out how I can make an impact for Lamson Dugan & Murray that does align with their business goals that helps us differentiate ourselves in the marketplace,” she said. “Because there’s so much talent here and such great people that I want to make sure that our story is told.”

Making a Difference

Morris-Rotermund became involved in the American Marketing Association (AMA), both on a local and a national level.

“In college, I was always involved with something,” she said. “So I was in a sorority, I held various positions within the sorority, and I just liked being part of something. So, when I graduated, I realized that I didn’t belong to a group anymore. And I also needed a job. So, I honestly just did some research, and I found the American Marketing Association.”

For the past two years, Morris-Rotermund has worked as the leadership advisory chair for the national AMA.

On a local level, she served as various board positions including president, helping to guide volunteers of the Omaha chapter.

“Omaha is in such a great place,” she said. “We’re unique in that you probably know someone who knows someone that I know. But when you put that on a bigger scale, you start to help with challenges that can affect not just your community, but communities across the world. You can just feel that impact.”

Morris-Rotermund has been able to help the marketing community through AMA, and has recently been inspired to help on a more personal scale too, after a woman sought advice from her about how to be taken seriously in the workplace as a young female.

“My advice to her or anyone who has struggled with that perception is just be confident you got where you are today, because you worked hard, and you believed in yourself. And you are also in the position you’re in because somebody saw something in you that they think is great.” she said.

While Morris-Rotermund hopes to continue to achieve all her internal marketing goals for her workplace, she also hopes to continue to be a good role model for young women entering the workforce.

“If I can be an example, whether it’s through my actual work and the results you see through my work, or it’s my involvement in the community, hopefully, I can give back some sort of knowledge or presence that somebody else can take a bit of and use that in their lives to elevate themselves,” she said.
