Dear readers,
Celebrating Leaders
It is with great pride that we present the Midlands Business Journal’s 2024 40 Under 40 issue. This marks our 23rd year of celebrating exceptional young professionals, an initiative that has flourished through the steadfast support of Northwest Bank and all of our sponsors over the years.
When my father founded the Midlands Business Journal in 1975, he envisioned a weekly publication that would capture the spirit of local business and entrepreneurship. His vision expanded in 2002 with the creation of this awards program, which has since recognized more than 900 outstanding individuals who have shaped our business community.
This year, we are delighted to honor Tessa Porter, CEO of Sprinkk, as our Entrepreneur of the Year. Since establishing this distinction in 2006, we have celebrated visionaries who exemplify innovation and leadership, and Tessa’s remarkable journey perfectly embodies these qualities.
The impact of our honorees extends far beyond their professional achievements. The Omaha metro area’s unique character stems from the creative energy and determined spirit of young professionals like these. Their commitment to community service and innovation makes me deeply proud to call this region home.
While recent years have presented unprecedented challenges, they have also unveiled extraordinary opportunities for growth. As you explore the stories of this year’s honorees, I encourage you to ask yourself, “What else is possible?” These trailblazers aren’t just envisioning the future — they’re actively dismantling barriers to create new possibilities.
Looking ahead, I see boundless promise for our region. The innovative spirit, unwavering dedication, and collaborative nature of our business community continue to inspire and drive success. By continuing to ask “What else is possible?” we can unlock even greater achievements together.
It is my pleasure to present this year’s 40 Under 40 issue of Midlands Business Journal. Join us in celebrating these remarkable individuals who represent the bright future of our business community.
Sincerely,
Andrea “ANDEE” Hoig Publisher/CEO Midlands Business Journal

Guest Speaker Willy Theisen
Willy Theisen, a pioneering American entrepreneur, transformed a chance breakdown of his Ford Falcon in Omaha into a remarkable business legacy. Born in Chicago and raised in Clinton, Iowa, Theisen’s entrepreneurial journey began when his westward journey to California was unexpectedly detoured in Nebraska, where he would ultimately build one of America’s most successful pizza chains.
In 1973, while managing an apartment complex in his twenties, Theisen opened Wild Willy’s, a bar in southwest Omaha. The establishment’s proximity to a local pizzeria led to a partnership with the owner, culminating in the creation of Godfather’s Pizza. Named after the iconic 1972 film, the restaurant combined Theisen’s innovative vision for casual dining with entertainment, featuring video games, pool tables, and a revolutionary mobile all-you-can-eat salad bar.
Under Theisen’s leadership, Godfather’s Pizza experienced phenomenal growth. After beginning franchising in 1974, it became America’s fastestgrowing food chain, expanding at an unprecedented rate of one location every 60 hours. By the time Theisen sold the business in 1983, Godfather’s had grown to nearly 1,000 locations nationwide, ranking as the country’s third-largest pizza chain.
Following the sale of Godfather’s, Theisen continued to make significant contributions to business and community development. His service includes board positions with the Omaha Airport Authority, Creighton University, and the Metropolitan Entertainment Convention Authority (MECA). His impact on Nebraska’s business landscape has earned him numerous accolades, including induction into the Nebraska Business & Commerce Hall of Fame and an honorary doctorate from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
At 79, Theisen remains actively engaged in community service, serving
Emcee Van Deeb
Van Deeb is one of the country’s foremost experts on building relationships and transforming professionals in the sales and service industry. His journey exemplifies his core belief that drive, determination, and relentless work ethic are the keys to success.
After discovering his passion for real estate in Dallas in 1983 and winning over 100 regional and national sales awards, Van returned to Omaha with a vision. Starting DEEB Realty from his basement in 1993, he built it into one of the nation’s largest independent firms with over 350 agents in just 15 years. His revolutionary “people first” philosophy and innovative management practices have since been widely adopted throughout the industry.
In 2023, Van founded Prime Home Realty, driven by a mission to provide exceptional real estate services with unmatched professionalism and integrity. The firm focuses on creating personalized experiences that exceed client expectations—a philosophy that perfectly embodies Van’s careerlong commitment to putting people first.
Known as “The Real Deal” among his peers, Van channels his passion into empowering others through keynote speeches and workshops across the country. His approach is refreshingly genuine –focusing entirely on inspiring and motivating his audience rather than selling books or subscriptions.
His philanthropic spirit shines through memorable fundraisers, including rooftop events for Children’s Miracle Network where he’d brave his fear of heights until reaching donation goals. He even transformed his 60th birthday party into a fundraiser for Chariots4Hope.
Today, Van maintains dual careers as a realtor and motivational
as the 2024 Tree of Lights Campaign Chairman for the Salvation Army’s holiday campaign and mentoring through RISE, a program supporting incarcerated individuals. His entrepreneurial success story, built on handshake deals and napkin-written business plans, continues to inspire new generations of business leaders. Theisen’s legacy exemplifies how vision, hard work, and dedication to community can transform a simple idea into lasting success.
speaker, saying he “gets to” go to work rather than “has to.” A firm believer in Napoleon Hill’s philosophy that “if you can conceive it and believe it, you can achieve it,” Deeb continues to dream big, finding his greatest joy in helping others move forward in life—whether through real estate or motivation.
Tessa Porter 2024 ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR
Tessa
Porter,
36 FOUNDER/OWNER SPRINKK
Entrepreneur Tessa Porter opened Sprinkk, a candy manufacturing facility in Omaha in June 2024 to support local entrepreneurs in developing their candy products. Sprinkk functions as a hub for product development and contract manufacturing, enabling small-scale production that minimizes ingredient loss and allows makers to test their ideas. The process involves refining product concepts, in-house development, and tackling formulation challenges. Once tested, products can be sold in local retailers, benefiting from Omaha’s strong community support. Porter, experienced in the candy industry, returned to her hometown during the pandemic to create Sprinkk and developed her own brand, Norma’s, inspired by her grandmother’s elderberry syrup recipe. The name “Sprinkk” embodies her goal of adding joy to candy, akin to sprinkles on desserts. Ultimately, she finds fulfillment in bringing clients’ visions to life.
What are three words that describe you?
Creative, curious, problem-solver.
Describe your career path. What has led you to where you are today?
I studied food science & technology at UNL, interned at The Hershey Company, got a master’s in food science in Wisconsin, joined Ferrara Pan Candy as a food scientist and grew into an R&D manager, got my MBA from UNL, managed contract manufacturing R&D at Glanbia Performance Nutrition, returned to Ferrara Candy as head of innovation-sugar and then left to start Sprinkk.
How do you give back to the community?
I love to inspire kids to explore science and chemistry by bringing candy science into the classroom. We talk about product development and the kids get the opportunity to design and make their own candies.
Who is a mentor who has made an impact on you?
My mentor at Hershey, Mark Heim, didn’t just teach me how to make candy, he taught me how to get to know candy. He spent an enormous amount of time teaching me candy chemistry, and just genuinely encouraged me to think differently, ask questions, and have fun. Mark was the first person that made it feel OK, and often beneficial, to make mistakes.
What is something about you that not everyone knows?
I worked masonry and concrete construction in high school along with my older sister on my dad’s crew. Whenever I was mixing mortar, I would pretend it was chocolate or cake batter to make the job seem more fun ... long before I ever thought about candy science as a career.
What other profession would you like to try?
In my next career, I’d like to be a lake house architect, then a jeweler, and then possibly own a coffee shop on a beach somewhere. I plan to live to 130 years old to get it all done!
What was your first job?
My primary summer job in junior high and high school was working construction, but once I turned 16, I also took on a morning job at the local cafe as a waitress/cook/ dishwasher and sold custom cheesecakes in elaborate handmade boxes.
What advice would you give your past self?
Chill out. A lot of things are going to go right and a lot of things are going to go wrong and the feeling of worry is often just a sign to put in a bit more effort. Also, work hard and speak up enough to make your future self proud.
What is your ideal vacation?
A small beach town with warm shallow waters, consistent wind, and good food. I’d love a week of kitesurfing, abandoning technology, and dining on delicious fresh seafood with my fiancé.
What is your favorite restaurant?
I love trying new foods yet find myself often returning to Charred Burger+Bar for my
favorite Carolina BBQ burger. I also adore Coneflower Creamery and a dish of cherry crumble and lemon bar ice cream. For special outings, Yoshitomo makes the best single bite of food I think I’ve ever had with their aburi wagyu.
What artist, sports team or pop culture icon do you consider yourself a big fan of?
I have become a bit of a Caitlin Clark fangirl. I’ve never watched much basketball previously, but I have really enjoyed watching her talent and career grow.
Favorite quote and by whom?
“Just don’t give up trying to do what you really want to do. Where there is love and inspiration, I don’t think you can go wrong.”-Ella Fitzgerald

PROJECT ACCOUNTANT
WOODMENLIFE
What are three words that describe you? Innovative, detailed, tall.
Describe your career path. What has led you to where you are today?
WoodmenLife hired me directly after receiving my bachelor’s degree from UNO. During my 12-year tenure, I have held seven different positions within the accounting division. I started out in an independent contributor role, worked in a management role for a few years, and am now in a project accountant role. Throughout this timeframe, I have always focused on expanding my horizons, learning new things, and constantly looking for areas of improvement and efficiency.
How do you give back to the community?
I really enjoy giving back to the community. In the past, I have volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, Food Bank For The Heartland, 4-H, Special Olympics, Nebraska Humane Society, and other miscellaneous fundraiser events. My wife and I also regularly volunteer at a senior dog sanctuary in Council Bluffs called Promise 4 Paws. They focus on giving unadoptable senior dogs a home to live out their golden years.
Who is a mentor who has made an impact on you?
I would say my biggest mentor/role model would be my father. I grew up watching his work ethic, putting in 14 to 16-hour days all summer. I also learned from him not to be afraid of just jumping into something and learning as you go. It’s fine to make mistakes as long as you learn from them.

EVENT EXPERIENCE AND SALES MANAGER
ZENIA OMAHA
What are three words that describe you?
Bubbly, compassionate, problem solver.
Describe your career path. What has led you to where you are today?
I studied Interior Design and spent 6.5 years creating functional, beautiful spaces tailored to clients’ needs. My focus was on problem-solving to enhance people’s experiences within their environments. Recently, I was offered a unique opportunity to manage a new venue, which allows me to engage more directly with clients and fulfill my long-time goal of building my own business. This venture lets me merge design expertise with a passion for creating memorable, client-centered experiences.
How do you give back to the community?
I give back to my community by actively participating in organizations like TeamMates, St. Leo’s Church, and the Junior League of Omaha, where I mentor and empower others to reach their potential. Through volunteering, I dedicate time and resources to initiatives that foster growth, support, and positive change in Omaha, helping to build a stronger, more connected community.
Who is a mentor who has made an impact on you?
I have three; John Birge, Carrie Dayton and Annette Mundy. Through their support, I’ve learned the importance of empathy, adaptability, and always striving for excellence. Freelance writer/content creator.
What was your first job?
I was a clerk at my college’s bookstore. I stocked shelves, helped patrons find what they needed, and ran the cash register.
What advice would you give your past self?
It is better to try and fail than to live with regrets about what could have been. No one has it all figured out, and there is no perfect way to get where you are going. The only way to know if something works for you is to try it. You have to feel the fear and do it anyway. Regardless of the outcome, you will end up further than before you tried.

Anywhere sunny where I can enjoy the beach and go on hikes.
What is your favorite restaurant?
I love a good steakhouse! The Drover, Fleming’s and Mahogany are staples.
What artist, sports team or pop culture icon do you consider yourself a big fan of?
Lately, I have been rediscovering Alanis Morrisette’s work. I grew up around her music and always found her a bit quirky. I only recently began to understand the depth of her lyrics. She is amazing. Also, if you have never heard the song “Settle Down” by Kimbra, look it up on YouTube. She even references Nebraska. You can thank me later.

Mallory Callahan, 38
SENIOR DIRECTOR OF POPULATION HEALTH MANAGEMENT AND INNOVATION
NEBRASKA HEALTH NETWORK
What are three words that describe you?
Resilient, empathetic, passionate.
Describe your career path. What has led you to where you are today?
I always knew I wanted to go into medicine. After high school, I became a nursing assistant and worked in high-risk obstetrics at Methodist Hospital. When my dad was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer during my freshman year of college, I leaned into pre-medicine. A few months after he passed, I went on a mission trip to Belize, and met students in the physician assistant field and saw firsthand the impact PAs can make in patient care. I attended PA school at UNMC and practiced family medicine at Methodist. As a wife, daughter, friend, and practicing medical professional, I felt dissatisfied with the status quo in care delivery. I wanted to become a voice for those who didn’t feel heard, leading me to pivot from direct care to a career in transforming health systems.
How do you give back to the community?
Besides fundraising efforts for brain cancer treatment and education through Leap for a Cure, I am deeply committed to bridging the gap between clinical and community health. I serve as a consultant for the UNMC Community Health Worker program and have been working to recruit, train and place CHWs across the state to reduce social determinants of health (inadequate housing, food insecurity, transportation) to improve health outcomes. I am also fortunate that my company, Nebraska Health Network, has a strong community focus and we volunteer regularly with the Foodbank For The Heartland, the Ronald McDonald House and the Salvation Army.
Who is a mentor who has made an impact on you?
Sandy Callahan for showing me how to lead with grace and how to “step into my power.” Stephane VanderMeulen for always pushing to invest in the next generation. Mike Romano for empowering me to make bold decisions. My dad, Don Martineau, for teaching me to be coachable and tenacious.

What other profession would you like to try?
Cartoon voiceovers or interior/exterior residential design.
What was your first job?
I started a dog walking business at my parent’s dog boarding facility when I was 9 years old. We walked over 10,000 dogs per year and the money I earned allowed me to buy my first car at 16 and put a down payment on my first house at 19.
What advice would you give your past self?
People come into your life for reasons and for seasons. Not every relationship is meant to last a lifetime, and not every relationship deserves the same amount of attention. When you find your people-hold onto them, nurture them, and love with your whole heart.
What is your ideal vacation?
Warm weather. Sandy beaches. Great company.

DIVISION
DIRECTOR, HEALTHY COMMUNITIES AND COMMUNITY BENEFIT
CHI HEALTH
What are three words that describe you? Passionate, tenacious, mother.
Describe your career path. What has led you to where you are today?
I was a single mother at eighteen. I figured my dream of being a civil rights lawyer was dead. I lived in Section 8 housing and fed my daughter, Ava, with groceries I purchased with food stamps. I was able to lean on social assistance programs in my time of need, so that I could go to college, work and eventually earn a master’s degree. That experience compelled me to give back to the countless anonymous heroes who championed social care as a way to end systemic poverty and create the conditions for people in challenging circumstances to reach their full potential.
While in school, I met my now husband who was enlisted in the Air Force. We were stationed in Belgium and I experienced firsthand an effective, patient-centered, universal health care system.
How do you give back to the community?
In my day job, I get to work in service of my community every day. My work addresses the root causes of poor health, like food insecurity and housing instability, depression and violence. Outside of my job, I volunteer as the president of the Public Health Association of Nebraska. This work needs a visible champion who works to ensure our public health system is adequately resourced and that science-based policy has a broad base of support for adoption. That’s why I volunteer as president of our public health membership association. I also volunteer at my kids’ schools, in their sports and out in the community. I personally enjoy volunteering with the Food Bank For The Heartland, Whispering Roots and Open Door Mission.
Who is a mentor who has made an impact on you?
I learned from Dr. Katie Brandert with the UNMC College of Public Health, Office of Public Health Practice, that you need your own personal board of directors to advise you on your career journey. I am grateful for the mentorship of City Council President Pete Festersen, Pathways Community HUB Director, Kelly Nielsen, Independent Consultant and former nonprofit executive director, Sarah Sjolie, founding dean of the UNMC College of Public Health and CityMatCH, Dr. Magda Peck and Professor Johnna Holland in the UNO College of Business Administration.

The credit union philosophy of serving members and supporting their financial well-being has also been a big driver.

My first job was at the local Dairy Queen and let me tell you — it taught me the art of customer service. I can still make a perfect cone with that signature curl on top!

Brett Carson Chief Investment Officer
Learning from Past Technological Disruptions
At HFS, we believe anticipating the future is one of the most important skills for investors. You could be a “valuation expert” with the most sophisticated financial models, but it won’t help without solid inputs and assumptions. As the saying goes, “garbage in, garbage out”. While no one can predict the future with precision, successful investors need to be directionally correct.
We’ve made the argument before that we’re in a period of massive technological change that’s impacting every consumer and business. HFS spends a lot of time thinking about how fast and far these shifts will occur. Ultimately, our goal is to make sure that our client’s portfolios are on the right side of these transformations. We understand that some people remain skeptical. The thought of hopping in a self-driving car or not having to own one is hard for some to imagine (what would you do with your garage space?). However, we found it instructive to learn that these are not new issues. When looking at past periods of change, many of the same hurdles existed.
The longer something has remained the same, the harder it is to imagine it changing.
We found an article in a 1930 edition of the Saturday Evening Post written by Alexander Winton. In 1896, Winton founded the Winton Motor Carriage Company, which sold the first American-made gasoline car in 1897 for $1,000 (about $33,000 today). He spoke about the public ridicule he faced with pursuing his invention. “The great obstacle to the development of the automobile was the lack of public interest. To advocate replacing the horse, which had served man through centuries, marked one as an imbecile.” Additionally, a skeptical reporter wrote, “The notion that (gas-powered) vehicles will be able to compete with railroad trains for long-distance traffic is visionary to the point of lunacy”.
Alexander Winton owned a bicycle plant in Cleveland and started thinking about ways that a rider wouldn’t have to push while trying to get somewhere. By inventing the automobile, he inadvertently solved a mounting sanitation and public health crisis in urban areas. Horses produce a lot of waste. In fact, it is estimated that New York City’s horse population in 1880 was producing 3 to 4 million pounds of manure that “lined city streets like banks of snow”. Vacant lots were piled high with manure, sometimes reaching 40 to 60 feet high. This attracted flies and spread disease. Horses also required large acres of farmland nearby to grow oats and hay. In fact, one farmer estimated that each horse consumed the product of five acres of land. With around 150,000 horses in New York city in 1880, much of the city’s nearby land was being used for fuel – for horse transportation. Initially, new innovations can be inconvenient and attract bad actors.
Winton drove a horseless carriage from Cleveland to New York in 1897. He said that no greater test could have been given to his machine as “the roads were simply outrageous” with ruts and mud. There were no gas stations at that time. Fuel could be purchased at a drug store but seldom could be bought in large quantities.
More than 500 automobile companies came and went in the first few years. Winton wrote “it was difficult for the public to distinguish between the genuine and the ephemeral.” Without any mechanics or auto parts suppliers, customers that purchased a car from a defunct manufacturer were helpless. To summarize, we believe that there are many parallels to be drawn from Winton’s experience to today. The turn of the last century was a golden period of innovation. Not only was the automobile created, but also the assembly line, the radio, the lightbulb, air conditioning, the airplane, tractors, among others. We believe that we’re in a similar period of change, whether that’s artificial intelligence, the creation of the digital economy, cryptocurrency, or autonomous cars. Adoption will not occur at a steady pace. Just like the automobile, there will be periods of rapid growth (1900 to 1930), pauses that will bring out the skeptics (1930 to 1945), and then exponential growth to becoming mainstream (1945 and beyond).
HFS believes the future is bright, and we can’t wait!
We can think of several companies and ideas (autonomous electric cars and the “metaverse”) that face similar skepticism today.
Technological progress solves many more problems than it creates.

Midwest Leaders Q&A
ARIEL MAGAÑA LINARES, ATTORNEY, CENTER OF IMMIGRANT & REFUGEE ADVANCEMENT (CIRA, FORMERLY IMMIGRANT LEGAL CENTER)
Midwest Leaders is a weekly section showcasing individuals who are making an impact in our community through their professional and volunteer endeavors. If you’d like to nominate someone for this section, email news@mbj.com with the individual name, position, company and email.
ARIEL MAGAÑA LINARES
Bio:
Fueled by his experience as a Salvadorian immigrant, Ariel Magaña Linares has dedicated his career to helping other immigrants and their families. His work at CIRA focuses on helping unaccompanied migrant children, and he recently helped launch the Nebraska Hispanic Bar Association. He was recognized by his alma mater, Creighton University, with the 2022 Outstanding Service Community Award, and was awarded the Nebraska State Bar’s 2024 Diversity Award.
What brought you to the legal field, specifically focusing on helping unaccompanied migrant children navigate the legal system?
I was definitely motivated by my family’s circumstances and wanting to help people.
Every person in my immediate family has had various immigration statuses. My dad has been here since 1993, had an open asylum case, and recently became a green card holder. My mother and I came to the United States in 2000 and for 23 years we had an outstanding deportation order, which I am currently fixing. I have two older siblings, both of whom had DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). They both have green cards now.
Being the first person in my family to go to college, it felt like I had that responsibility to help my community, especially with the language capabilities that I have. The specific kinds of cases that I take on are asylum seekers and unaccompanied children. Having that direct connection where my clients can look at me and be like, this person gets it.
If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be and why?
Don’t worry about the structural barriers. There were several times that I considered giving up on being a lawyer, because I couldn’t get financial aid, or I didn’t have the right family connections. But who cares? There are other scholarships to apply for. And, in college, you just have to show up and get good grades. I would just assure myself that I can keep going regardless of the circumstances.
Your own experience has motivated you to mentor other Latino students looking to get into

These leaders will officially be inducted at the Nebraska Business Hall of Fame Banquet on Thursday, January 30, at a 5:30 p.m. reception and 6:30 p.m. banquet held at the Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel.
“This year’s honorees truly represent the entrepreneurial and innovative leadership that is so essential to Nebraska’s growth and success,” said NE Chamber President Bryan Slone. “We’re thrilled to honor these individuals for the contributions they’ve made and the lasting impacts those contributions will continue to have on Nebraska’s business economy.”

Candidates are nominated by individuals from the business community, business associations and academia. The program was established in 1992 by the NE Chamber and UNL College of Business.
“We are excited to honor these five individuals with their induction into the 2025 Nebraska Business Hall of Fame. The following are some guidelines to consider when posting legal notices with the Midlands Business Journal:
1. Submit a written notice in either Microsoft Word or as a PDF document either through mbj.com or through the Legal Department at legals@ mbj.com. For trade names, submit a copy of approved (bar code in upper right hand corner) Application For Registration of Trade Name from the Secretary of State to the same email address.
Please include your billing address and the desired duration you’d like your notice to run (trade names run for only one week). As a publisher and not a legal advisor we print notices exactly as they are submitted and therefor only comp reruns when the notice was rejected or messed up due to a MBJ error.
All companies submitting notices are responsible for ensuring the content fits with the State’s requirements and are responsible for the cost of republishing the notice if it is rejected due to misinformation or missing information
2. You will receive a confirmation and price quote. Legal notices, except for trade names, are charged per line. The flat fee for a trade name is $50. Payment is now credit or debit card.
3. Deadline is 5 p.m. on Monday for a notice to start publishing that Friday.
4. All costs include fees to file the notice with the Secretary of State and/or any appropriate courts.
5. Invoices must be paid prior to publication.
