WHO’S WHO IN LOCAL BUSINESSES

DIRECTOR OF MARKETING, NEBRASKA REALTY

Matt Robak

HOMETOWN: COLUMBUS, NEBRASKA. EDUCATION: BACHELOR’S DEGREE – ADVERTISING. UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA-LINCOLN

How I got into the business: After graduation, I started a small advertising company called Urban Finch. After five years, Urban Finch shifted its focus to indoor billboard advertising, which freed up some time for me to pursue a side hustle. In 2014, I joined Nebraska Realty as Realtor helping friends and family achieve their real estate goals. After juggling both Urban Finch and my real estate career for three years, I pursued an opportunity that would allow me to consolidate my skillset. In the winter of 2017, I accepted the role as Director of Marketing at Nebraska Realty. Accomplishments or milestones: This year, I’ll be celebrating my fifth year as the Director of Marketing at NR. Since being in my role, NR has grown to over 900 agents and expanded into markets all across the state. First job: I’m from small-town Nebraska. My first job was obviously detassling.

The toughest part of the job: My job is two-fold. One if helping NR agents develop and execute their personal marketing plans, the other is helping the brokerage develop and execute its marketing plan. Juggling the two can be a challenge, especially with the significant growth of the brokerage. The best advice I have received: Earn it every day. What you did yesterday doesn’t matter. About my family: Erin Robak has been my firecracker of a wife for 10 years. She’s an attorney at McGill Law Firm. We have two children, Ike who is 8, and Claire who is 6. They are both students at St. Stephen the Martyr. Something else I’d like to accomplish: See all 7 Wonders of The World with my children before they graduate high school.

How my business will change in the next decade: Tech will continue to play an increasing role in the real estate industry. Mentor who has helped the most in my career: Outside interests: Golf, travel. Teaching my kids how to be good humans. Favorite vacation spot: Cabo. Other careers I would like to try: Neurosurgery. Favorite cause or charity: St. Jude’s Children Hospital.

A CENTURY AFTER BOZELL HUNG OUT ITS SHINGLE IN OMAHA, THE LEGENDARY ADVERTISING HOUSE – LIKE ITS UNCONVENTIONAL PRESIDENT – STILL DANCES TO ITS OWN BEAT.

WOMEN-LED BOZELL THRIVES IN 100TH YEAR

Were it not for the side hustle of a Connecticut school teacher, one of Omaha’s most widely recognized companies might not be here today. Robin Donovan, Bozell president, graduated from the University of Connecticut with a degree in English and set up shop as a high school English teacher. The New Jersey native loved writing, and she loved to talk, so teaching seemed the natural path. It wasn’t. “I was a mild-mannered educator and one day, I realized I felt like I was about 103 years old,” she said. “I read about an ad agency that was right outside of Hartford (Connecticut) and it was supposed to be this wonderful, amazing place. So, one day I just picked up the phone and said, ‘Hey, if you need a copywriter…,’ and he said, ‘Well, I don’t.’” It was one of the more inauspicious moments in her career — she’d call back and pitch again that summer, landing a job — but what a career it has been. After honing her chops with local agencies, Donovan would eventually arrive in Omaha with Bozell, then as now one of the most recognized ad firms in the Midwest if not the country. She, along with some co-workers, would one day save the company from the ash heap and Donovan is today recognized along with fellow owners Kim Mickelsen and Jackie Miller as true pioneers in the advertising game, women excelling in an industry still dominated by men.

Over the first two years, the part-timers landed some small accounts until the hungry would-be admen were noticed by Nebraska Power Company. That account pushed them into full-time operation in 1923 and quickly carved out a niche serving regional utility companies. Their reputation began to attract out-of-state clients and branch offices opened in Indianapolis, Chicago and Houston. Bozell & Jacobs was also adept at capturing the major accounts in its own backyard; in less than 20 years after its founding, the firm would list Union Pacific, Mutual of Omaha and the NCAA Men’s College World Series on its roster of clients. It also began a long pro bono relationship with Boys Town, which achieved worldwide name recognition due in part to the firm’s efforts and in part to the 1938 film “Boys Town” which earned Spencer Tracy an Oscar in the role of its founder Father Flanagan.

“I love to see [Bozell’s] legacy continue,” she said. “I interviewed a woman a couple months ago and she said, ‘I’ve always dreamed of working at Bozell.’ You would be amazed at how much we hear that and we interview people from everywhere. “Another thing is, we have a thing called the boomerang — people who worked here who want back in — and I’ve never seen it at any other agency the way it is here. We’re getting contacted all the time and a lot of our people are here for the second time around.”

Humble Beginnings Leo Bozell and Morris Jacobs didn’t even bother to buy individual desks when they opened their Omaha ad firm in 1921. The full-time journalists worked different shifts — Bozell by day and Jacobs by night — and resources were slim, so they shared a desk. Even more telling of the business at that time is, for the first year they didn’t even have a phone.

At the time of its 50th year in business, billings were approximately $100 million and Bozell ranked in the top 20 of agencies nationwide. Godfather’s Pizza, American Airlines, Lee Jeans, Greyhound Bus and the National Ad Council were a few of the headlining accounts in the company’s portfolio. As its list of high-profile clients grew, so too did the iconic advertising created by the firm to support them. Iconic images like the “milk mustache” and coining the phrase “Pork the Other White Meat” all sprang from the minds and desks of the Omaha firm. “Bozell was really a unicorn, because when I got here, we’d had several clients for 50 years. I mean, that’s crazy,” Donovan said. “We still have a couple of them, which is a miracle.”

getting phone calls from headhunters all over the place. I was recruited to an agency in southern Connecticut that just wasn’t a good fit. I didn’t love it. “I talked to my old boss and said, ‘I’m probably not going to be here too much longer. Keep your ears open.’ Literally the next day I got a call from a headhunter about a media director job in Omaha.” Donovan’s sum total experience with the Midwest to that point was changing planes at Chicago O’Hare on business trips, but she was intrigued enough to check out Omaha and interview with Bozell. “We just liked it. I liked the feel of the company. Bozell, of course, I’d heard about them,” she said. “When I got back, they were really pushing for an answer and I called my husband. He said, ‘Well, we could go to New York, we could go to Boston. Let’s go to Omaha.’ And that’s how we got here.

Donovan and her husband Joe, a career banker, arrived in Omaha in the spring of 1997. Her industry knowledge had matured considerably since landing that first job, with a resume that included nearly two decades in the advertising game bolstered by a solid reputation. But by the 1990s, things were in upheaval.

“We did not expect to get the amazing things we have here. Omaha is a really unique market because for its size it has this amazing quality of life. I had people back east at the time who were like, ‘What do you think? Two years?’ Well, it’s almost 24 years later and I’m still here.”

“It was a weird time in advertising,” she said. “People were leaving advertising because there weren’t jobs. Then all of a sudden, it shifted the other way and I was

Another major plus for the Midwest was the way she was treated as a woman in advertising compared to the agencies she’d served thus far.

FATHER FLANAGAN, FOUNDER OF BOYS TOWN, WITH MORRIS JACOBS

“That was something that changed dramatically from the Northeast coming to the Midwest,” she said. “In the Northeast, there were things that got in my way on a daily basis. Part of it was I was younger, but coming to the Midwest I always felt like I was given a chance. I didn’t always feel that way in the Northeast. “The difference between men and women is so much more pronounced when I was growing up in the business there, and here I didn’t feel like people treated me as an anomaly. It was a big, big difference and it was very welcomed.” Donovan landed on a cusp in the company’s history, a time when independent ad houses were being swallowed up under larger and larger national nameplates. To feed these ever-expanding beasts, multiple clients in the same industry had to be maintained. Working among clients in competition with each other took a deft creative touch. “We started to realize we don’t want our signature to be recognizable in our work,” she said. “In the ‘70s and ‘80s and ‘90s, it hurt the industry a lot when the work was so recognizable. That was why there was exclusivity. You couldn’t have two businesses in the same industry and a lot of the companies started going away from that. “So, when you got into the late ‘80s and the early ‘90s, the work wouldn’t look the same even if it was the same agency. We had a number of clients in building and

construction. Some were tools, some were windows or doors. You didn’t want your ads to look like everybody else’s and we were able to make it so it didn’t look like everybody else’s. It was very distinct.”

Leading Ladies The pressure to grow was unrelenting during the period when Donovan came to Omaha. In 1986, Bozell had merged with Kenyon and Eckhardt to form Bozell Worldwide. The partnership was a decade-long dose of rocket fuel for the company, but brought with it the challenges and behind-the-scenes machinations of global overlords. In 1998, Bozell Worldwide was abruptly purchased by True North out of Chicago, in turn bought by Interpublic Group three years later. “Interpublic Group came to us in the summer of 2001 and said, ‘We are not going to keep an Omaha office. If you want to buy it, make us an offer,’” Donovan remembered. She and three co-workers, one of them current-day CEO Kim Mickelsen, cobbled together the funds to buy back the iconic agency. The deal was consummated by that fall, the announcement of which was frontpage news — for all of about three business hours. “Our announcement actually came out in the World-Herald on 9/11. Literally, 9/11, 2001,” Donovan said, head still shaking. “I woke up, my husband’s reading the paper, and he says, ‘Oh, look. You’re on the front page.’ I’m like, ‘You’re kidding. That never happened before.’ And I got on the elevator at the office and it all went away.” The new ownership didn’t take the events of that day as an omen, but their path to success was anything but guaranteed. The deal didn’t include use of the name — those rights would be bought separately later — and while none of the partners were industry rookies, three of the four had never run a sprawling enterprise, either.

Solid fiscal management laid the foundation for the company to meet the challenges of a radically changing industry landscape over the next 20 years. That period saw the rise of digital and social media components as critical in campaigns, fed by new tides of data gathered from seemingly every angle. “The client’s needs are different today and we’re continually trying to figure out how to be as flexible as we need to be to meet those needs,” Donovan said. This thinking has come to fruition in service offerings — in 2020 the firm launched a proprietary platform, 360 Listening, aiming to help clients understand target audiences by cross-referencing insights from search, social and news listening — and in how the firm’s 60 employees are deployed. “We are having to look at new ways of doing things,” Donovan said. “A year and a half ago, we couldn’t do what we do without 60 people. Now we’re able to do it with less and part of it is we are using people at a distance or maybe not fulltime. We’re being a little more flexible in that respect.”

Huge Responsibility Donovan and Mickelsen are the only two remaining partners from the buyback (Chief Marketing Officer Jackie Miller joined the triumvirate partnership in 2016). Perhaps being women-owned shouldn’t distinguish Bozell after all of these years, but it does. It’s a mantle that Donovan, recently honored with a 2021 Enterprising Women of the Year Award, is proud to carry both in business and in corporate philanthropy.

“I think not knowing what we didn’t know did us a big favor,” she laughed. “When I was at an agency in Connecticut, while they didn’t share all their specific numbers, they shared with us this is how we do business, this is how we make money. I was kind of raised in an environment where I was very much aware of how challenging it is to try to make money.

“I just saw on LinkedIn that only 3% of women-owned businesses have sales of $1 million or more,” she said. “That really shocked me. Kim [Mickelsen] and I always said, ‘We are holding the baton for this period in time and we are hoping that we do a good enough job to pass the baton to the next generation.’ That is still the hope, that we will be able to do that.

“We always had fairly sophisticated CFOs. You don’t necessarily need a CFO if you’re a small ad agency, but if we had visions of doing some M&A, we had to have more sophisticated financial help and so we had great advisers.”

“We have a huge responsibility. It’s a responsibility to own a company, but we as a company have a responsibility to give back, as well. Our founder said, ‘You must pay rent for the space you occupy on this earth.’ So that’s what we do.”

Every day, consumers of all ages are inundated with marketing messages from brands on various media channels. Which messages will capture your audience’s attention, and what will they tune out?

Take Note of Current Trends Local marketing experts recognize the importance of creating dynamic marketing campaigns that ring true with consumers. Heading into the new year, it is important to understand trends and

how to execute them to successfully reach your target audience, grow brand recognition, and fuel company growth. Madison Keast, marketing strategist for DayCloud Studios, noted that personalizing your marketing message is one of the most important things you can do. This is especially important in a time when people are flooded from all angles with pressure to make purchases. “By personalizing your marketing messaging, you will have a higher chance of connecting with the

for companies that are doing their part to give back to communities and larger social causes. “Now, more than ever, consumer preference is driving toward brands that do the right thing,” she said. “Seventytwo percent of Gen Z’ers are more likely to buy from a company that contributes to social causes. People want to buy ‘in’ to something versus buy something.”

Clear Communication As businesses continue to pivot their marketing strategies during the pandemic to reach their audiences and try to connect with them amid ongoing turmoil, one thing is evident: communicating clearly with authenticity is critical. “Successful brands have been ones that are able to communicate updates to customers quickly and authentically,” Gilmore said. “Changes in inventory, shipping times, wait times, staffing challenges, and more are all surmountable challenges as long as your customers know what to expect. Thinking critically about how customer service is part of your marketing strategy to help retain current customers and conquer competitors who aren’t keeping up is something that will last long past the pandemic.” Keast agreed that people connect better with marketing tactics that are truly genuine.

EXPERTS SHARE TIPS FOR 2022

Use 2022 to position yourself to take advantage of future opportunities. If we learned anything in the past two years, it is that no one can predict what will happen next. - KATIE HERZOG, CHIEF CLIENT OFFICER, ERVIN & SMITH

“Consumers are now used to and want a brand to have an authentic tone of voice in their marketing and advertising,” she said. “Consumers are looking for brands who value people over profits.”

Finishing the Year Strong Engagement during a busy month of holidays and planning for the new year means getting creative and not letting go of the goals you have made to have a successful year. Ann Pedersen, vice president of solutions delivery for OBI Creative said, “Don’t slide through the holidays into the new year. Keep the pedal all the way down, continuing to execute on your organizational goals through Dec. 31. While you’re doing that, take a close look at your marketing goals and make sure they are aligned with your company goals for next year. By setting metrics upfront, you can track progress toward marketing goals and adjust as needed throughout the year.” Gilmore recommended keeping an eye on the current customer base, too. “While most business efforts are around new customer acquisition, incremental sales opportunities from existing customers could be a good

strategy to finish the year strong,” she said. Katie Herzog, chief client officer for Ervin & Smith, advised using the end of the year to strategize for the next year. “Use 2022 to position yourself to take advantage of future opportunities,” she said. “If we learned anything in the past two years, it is that no one can predict what will happen next. Having a plan for the next three to six months will allow you to get out of reactionary mode now — and enable you to react more quickly when the next great opportunity comes along.”

New Year, Positive Results Investing in the right tools to reach your audience at the right time is paramount to business growth. Wiseman said that knowing which digital tools work is important to establishing a strong presence and attracting a wide audience of technology-savvy consumers. “The pandemic pushed brands into the digital/online sales space like never before,” she said. “Online retail sales increased 32.4% in 2020 and are up 39% year to date. “Nearly every brand across categories

pivoted to stay alive ‘differently’ during the pandemic, changing delivery of their goods and services. Find the right digital tools to target prospects by preference and deliver to them what they want. “Done strategically well, this channel can be very efficient and informative, allowing small businesses to invest in what makes sense, then see what works and pivot quickly.” In addition, it’s important to keep in mind that online marketing is not a trend that’s going away anytime soon, and engaging users with short form videos is something that businesses should consider pursuing in 2022. “With over one billion users using TikTok, short form videos are on the rise,” Keast said. “They are perfect for declining attention spans, ideal for social media, and it is easier for viewers to remember.” In addition, influencer marketing is something else to watch for and consider implementing. More and more companies plan on using macro/microinfluencers in the coming year to build brand awareness. “Consumers are looking to buy products from someone they ‘know’ instead of from traditional media,” Keast said.

Pedersen noted that working with your marketing team to create a strategic plan that caters to your unique business and audience base is important. “We recommend investing in tools that can help small businesses to build engagement and offer value — tools that allow small businesses to manage, track and talk to existing clients, as well as nurturing prospects into sales-ready leads,” she said. But what it really boils down to is looking at all angles of your marketing plan and making sure you know what works and what doesn’t. “To set yourself up to start strong in the new year, the best thing to do could be to take a hard look at evaluating how this year went,” Gilmore said. “What were your marketing initiatives this year, how did they turn out, and what are the priorities next year? “By gaining a solid understanding of what you’ve done so far, you can set yourself up for better success in 2022. Examining your unique value proposition can help cement your niche in the community. Being great at the right things is better than trying to be everything to everyone.”

ENGINEERING leader BERNIE LYONS, SHOP MANAGER, TOBY VARNER, INDUSTRIALS MANAGER, HOWARD HUFFMAN, PRESIDENT/COO, WENDY HUFFMAN, CEO/CFO,KEITH MANDACHIT, ENGINEERING MANAGER.

The Brains Behind Utility Systems LINCOLN’S HUFFMAN ENGINEERING BUILDS NATIONAL REACH What started in 1987 by Howard & Wendy Huffman in Lincoln as a specialized engineering firm seeking an industrial niche, has expanded into a multi-state engineering and controlled services business with 42 employees and a record that has led to national exposure in pharmaceuticals and life sciences, food and beverages, water and wastewater and the electrical and natural gas industries. “What we do is get results, build relationships, on time and within budget,” said President and co-owner Howard Huffman. His wife of 41 years, Wendy — CEO/CFO/co-owner — said an important element in the firm’s continued success has been “the quality of our documentation,” which is done to meet the changing standards and regulations of agencies ranging from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to the United States Department of Agriculture and the North American Electric Reliability Corp. —which regulates the power grid. As control systems engineers, Huffman Engineering utilizes manufacturing equipment and robotics hardware and combines them with software applications to allow processes to be automated, run smoothly and be in compliance with regulations. With a considerable investment in engineering expertise and the

utilization of different software platforms, data is sent to remote sites in order to allow plant managers and engineers to monitor their work systems to ensure everything is running smoothly. Essentially, the Huffmans market their company as the provider of the brains behind most of their customers major utility and production systems. Howard Huffman said the family-owned start-to-finish engineering firm stays with a project from conception and first conversation with the customer on through its final installation and handover of detailed documentation. Huffman Engineering is headquartered in a 19,000-square-foot building at 5301 N. 57th St. Space at that structure is almost fully utilized. In 2016, a fiveemployee branch was opened in Englewood, Colorado.

Complex Systems Wendy Huffman noted that what Huffman Engineering does is extraordinarily complex — and many Nebraskans might not realize what control systems integrators do. The result, however, is that by having systems talk to one another and execute at a high level, the public has to worry less about the safety of their food or medicine or the quality of the water they are drinking and cleaning with.

Our largest investment is in our people, their training and taking the time for them to continue to learn as they often will need to attain different professional certifications. - WENDY HUFFMANN, CEO/CFO/CO-OWNER, HUFFMAN ENGINEERING

“We work on a lot of high-profile and incredibly complex projects,” she said, noting that Lincoln has surpassed Ireland as the best-to-practice location for global pharmaceutical companies. Engineering/IT Manager Keith Mandachit led the initiative to plan and develop Huffman Engineering’s state-of-the-art testing and training facility. “In addition to the latest technology, the training room is important in that we use it to explain the legacy equipment, which we still support,” he said. That investment has been important as Huffman Engineering has expanded to include more projects across all industries, said Pharmaceuticals Industry Manager Toby Varner. He has served as account manager for Novartis Consumer Health, a Huffman client since 1998. “We are really the brains behind most of our customers major utility and production systems,” he said. Varner has completed training across multiple platforms including AOL, and Faceplates, IQ, OQ and PQ Validation, and Industrial Ethernet Connectivity, among others.

Pharma and Life Science Howard Huffman cited the vaccine and medication development, manufacturing and packaging for the pharmaceutical and life sciences as a robust portion of the firm’s business. Years ago, Huffman Engineering adapted to specializing in an innovative trend in the pharma world and has been solidifying its presence ever since. “We’ve automated the process of making animal vaccines and human everyday medicines,” he said. Other clusters of concentration include in the food industry with processes involving food mixing, refrigeration, production, and packaging; water and wastewater with water filtration, sewage control, monitoring and flood control, lift stations that reroute water supplies; work for electrical and natural gas utilities that involve keeping water and wastewater supplies clean and healthy filtering of waste; and electrical and natural gas utilities, which involve monitoring energy usage, renewable energy and energy storage, liquification, delivery odorous injection metering and monitoring. Howard Huffman said the goal is to help produce and deliver natural gas (used to run a wide range of vehicles) and electrical utilities for electrical power. Mandachit said when the 2019 flood hit eastern Nebraska and public sector

systems were down for several months, Huffman Engineering assisted the city of Omaha with the work of its sewerage facilities. McCook native Bernie Lyons, as Huffman Engineering’s shop manager, is involved in projects that range from small one-technician equipment testing and maintenance to much larger projects such as an expansion of a pharmaceutical firm that will take as many as two years to complete, with the setup of new equipment. “We design control systems and document their performance,” Lyons said. “Collaboration between engineers and technicians is vital.” Wendy Huffman said teams of multiple professionals are involved in the projects, sometimes involving four, five, six or more persons. “The quality of our documentation is the most important thing,” she said.

Continued Training “Our largest investment is in our people, their training and taking the time for them to continue to learn as they often will need to attain different professional certifications,” Wendy Huffman said. And the attention to employee development has paid off in a big way. Huffman Engineering has been named 2022 System Integrator of the Year, a global award in the small business category, by Control Engineering and Plant Engineering, industry journals published by CFE Media and Technology. Broad categories for the nomination packet and selection committee included business skill, technical competency and customer satisfaction. Huffman Engineering is the only Nebraska firm to win the System Integrator of the Year award in its 18-year history. Huffman Engineering is featured on the cover of the December issue of Global System Integrator Report. Howard Huffman credits his wife, who has been involved in the daily operation of the family business since its creation, with much of its success. “I’ve listened to her and the business continues to change from 10 to 20 years ago,” he said. “We’ve also listened to the customers to determine where we’re going.” He said that while Huffman Engineering has from 80 to 90 competitors nationally, the number of their employees and the higher levels of their industry certification differentiates the Nebraska-based company in a big way. “Often we’re the only one in Nebraska with as many specialized certifications,” he said.

LINCOLN FIRMS BUILD BRIDGES TO FILL ENGINEERING JOBS BY DAVID KUBICEK

In the past couple of years we’ve been successful finding people both in the state and out of the state. For us, it’s really been a blend. - NICOLETTE VILLWOK DIRECTOR OF HR, E & A CONSULTING GROUP

After a slight slow-down at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the engineering market revived quickly, growing through the remainder of 2020 and through 2021, and growth is expected to continue over the next 12 months. The problem is finding enough engineers to meet the demand. Travis Figard, project manager in the Lincoln office of E & A Consulting Group,

said that there are lots of opportunities for engineering work in Lincoln, but right now it’s a matter of finding enough people to fill those job openings.

Finding Connections Nicolette Villwok, director of HR for E & A Consulting Group said that the firm, which did virtual career fairs last year to recruit

engineers, is returning in-person career fairs this year as well as recruiting from high schools. “The other avenue we’re getting into is social media, really trying to educate people about who we are and what makes us different,” she said. “It’s more about creating a connection and sharing that with people. I think this is working well for us. It has been successful in terms of starting a conversation

— they are more apt to come and talk. They’re seeing that we’re genuine, so it allows them to be more comfortable sooner than if they were to just learn [about the position] from a job posting.” Figard emphasized the importance of connecting with potential candidates. “People in [our] firm are creating good connections and networking with people in other

firms,” Figard said. “If [people in other firms] are looking, they already have those relationships established so our HR people don’t have to cold call and try to set up relationships that way. [When] you have those relationships with other engineers, you can talk about it, and they understand what you’re about.”

Future Job Growth According to the Nebraska Department of Labor, the demand for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)

jobs will increase 11% in Nebraska through 2029. In the Lincoln metro area, the job market is expected to see substantial growth in positions

such as information security analysts (40%) and software developers (24%). The growth in these areas was a major impetus for establishing the new School of

High Demand “As I talk to other competitors, we are all busy, even in non-civil [engineering],” Villwok said. “With the infrastructure bill, things will continue to be busy in the engineering world.” Figard agreed, saying “People who are looking for a job right now won’t have trouble finding a job. He said that Nebraska’s low unemployment rate makes it tough to find employees. “You may have three or four engineering firms fighting for a couple of people who are available,” he said. “It’s tough to find people who don’t have jobs. Really good, capable, and smart people already have a job. We’re looking for people who are looking for a different opportunity and seeing if what our firm offers makes sense to them.” Villwok noted that social media outreach is part of the process of looking for those people interested in a career change. “In the past couple of years we’ve been successful finding people both in the state and out of the state,” she said. “For us, it’s really been a blend. We have used international firms to help us look nationally as well as locally.” The current job market is very tight, according to Farris Engineering President and CEO Michael Wallace. “Almost every engineering firm has openings that are going unfilled,” he said. “I do not see any indications that the market is going to change for our industry in the near future. “As we look at building a team for the future, we are recruiting younger employees —getting them in as interns, training them while they are in college, and working to mentor them so that they are ready to hit the ground running when they get out of school.”

Computing in the University of NebraskaLincoln College of Engineering, according to Lance C. Pérez, dean of College of Engineering and Omar H. Heins Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. “Significant job growth is expected for mechanical engineers, electrical

engineers, and civil engineers as well,” he said. For example, the Lincoln metro area typically needs to fill 45 civil engineering jobs annually but with the announcement of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and a reported $3 billion designated for

Nebraska, the demand for civil engineers will likely increase. “The same can be said for mechanical and industrial engineering jobs in the Lincoln metro area, which usually needs to fill two dozen openings per year,” Pérez said. “The need to address infrastructure and a growing city is influencing a demand for these engineering jobs.” Computing professionals like computer scientists and software developers are needed as a result of technology expansion and cybersecurity concerns. Information security analysts are needed for jobs in the public and private sector to install software — like firewalls — to protect computer networks and cyberinfrastructure. The increased demand for

civil engineers is due to the need to update, expand, and protect domestic infrastructure such as roads and bridges and the power grid. “As communities grow, so do infrastructure needs, and civil engineers will be necessary to address these issues,” Pérez said. UNL’s engineering college experienced a 7.4% increase in enrollment this fall compared to the fall of 2020. This fall, the college has 3,023 undergraduate students and 598 graduate students, which is more than the prepandemic fall of 2019. “This fall we welcomed 842 first-time freshmen, which is an increase of 172 students from the previous year, and the outlook remains positive for continued growth next year,” Pérez said. “The College of

Engineering is currently up 21% in applications and 30% in admitted students for the fall of 2022. We’ve implemented new academic and scholarship programs to meet our enrollment goals and ensure student success, including the new Kiewit Scholars program and the Peter Kiewit Foundation Engineering Academy. These programs will enhance our recruitment and retention efforts.” The College of Engineering has a Career Services office that helps students with job placement and provides support services for resume writing and developing interview skills. Its Complete Engineer program provides students with nontechnical skills that are highly valued by employers. “We are extremely fortunate to have great relationships with companies wanting to hire Nebraska engineers,” Pérez said. “Industry partners like Kiewit hire more engineers from UNL than any other engineering degree program in North America. Union Pacific, Valmont and Olsson, to name a few additional Nebraska companies, are also heavily involved in sponsoring student success programs and hiring students. “The pandemic influenced the job market globally, but it did not seem to negatively impact growth in the engineering job market because the business market in engineering, computing, and construction was robust. We will continue to see the need for these jobs to be filled for several years going forward.”

Tech Advances “From what we have seen recently, most of the technological advances [in engineering] are along the lines of speeding up production and also in new ways to perform site investigations of existing buildings,” Wallace said. Figard said that 3D modeling is a major trend in the industry. “Historically engineering has been 2D,” he said. “You have a piece of paper, and your drawing is on that. That’s how you sold it to the developer, the client, and the public. Now we have 3D models — whether pictures, videos, or slide shows — that actually show what we’re doing.

“It may be dams, it may be streams, it may be a whole residential or townhome development that you can present to the developer or the public to get a city council on board or get funding. Using more sophisticated technology has really been a big part in the past couple of years in trying to sell some of this stuff to the public and get people on board with it.” The engineering field as a whole has become much more business driven. Engineers and engineering firms are becoming more well-rounded. Not only must they do the design well, but they must be able to communicate well with the public. “You must be able to talk to people well, to reach out to the public, to interact, because that’s all a part of [the job] now,” Figard said. “It used to be you just did the design, and that was all that mattered, but now it’s a lot of interaction with people doing the funding, developers, city councils [National Resource Districts], state governments, the Department of roads [and others]. All of those agencies play a lot bigger parts in the decisions, so you really must engage them.” When the pandemic first hit, the engineering market saw a small downturn, according to Figard. “Lincoln saw that a little bit,” he said. “There was a little bit of hesitation on spending money on certain things. But it picked back up, and toward the end of last year things were slowly getting back to normal and it has continued on now for the past 12 months. Right now, it’s really good.” There is lots of work for engineers— public, private, roadways, developments, water resources. “There’s a lot of desire, especially in Lincoln, for developing certain areas,” Figard said. “I’d say there’s probably more work right now than the firms can get done. It’s a good problem to have. We have more work than is feasible to get done in the next year, but we’d rather have that than the other way where there’s not enough work. I think it’s really encouraging for next year.”

a lot of trepidation in the market. It seems like a lot of that nervousness has passed, and owners are getting back to building and maintaining their buildings, and a lot of the questions seem to be answered. Based on current trends, it looks like the engineering market should remain strong and growing over the next 12 months.” E & A Consulting Group consulting group’s biggest project is the Fire Ridge Development, which is approximately 140 acres of residential — either single family homes or townhomes — on the east side of Lincoln just south of Van Dorn between 98th and 112th streets. “We are doing everything on it from survey to plat grading, lot layouts, all of the drainage analysis as well as construction services,” Figard said. “[The development] is still in the

final design phase, but they have started doing grading on it. The grading and building of houses will be ongoing probably for the next five to 10 years.” Farris Engineering has just begun work on renovating Andrews Hall, the home of UNL’s department of English. The historic building opened in 1928, and the first floor has not been renovated since the 1940s. The $5,340,000 project will include air handler, structural support replacement, and fire and life safety renewals in portions of the building. The project is currently in the design phase, and construction is expected to start sometime in the summer. The Clark Enersen Partners is the architect for the project.

LINCOLN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

WENDY BIRDSALL, PRESIDENT, LINCOLN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

I love my community and wanted to do something to advance and grow it.

Lifelong Problem-Solver

- WENDY BIRDSALL, PRESIDENT, LINCOLN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

LINCOLN CHAMBER’S WENDY BIRDSALL RETIRES BY MICHELLE LEACH Wendy Birdsall’s “Mr. Fix It” father and artist mother set the tone for an accomplished 30-year career at the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, marked by transformative community projects and initiatives to spur entrepreneurship, and talent attraction and retention. “‘No’ was just the beginning of the conversation,” said Birdsall, who is retiring Dec. 31 after 15 years as Chamber president. “I was always looking for a way to make things happen.” A nod to a lifetime of ingenuity, Birdsall recalled how she put newly gifted ice skates to good use as a child. “I had read that you could create an ice-skating rink in your backyard if you just had a hose and water,” she recalled. “We did skate on it a few times and had a ton of fun.” Birdsall has powered innovation and projects of a far different scale in recent years; the passage of the bond to financially support Pinnacle Bank Arena by Lincoln voters was characterized as “the biggest difference-maker in Lincoln’s growth and the way that we look at ourselves.” She indicated the arena was just the tip of the iceberg. “Building out the whole Haymarket area was a grand slam,” Birdsall said. “We made it more than just an arena or a place to go to an event. We made it a place where people people can stay and linger.” When asked about notable accomplishments during her tenure, Birdsall highlighted the creation of the Lincoln Young Professionals Group. Today, the 2,000-plus-member YPG is among one of the biggest groups of its kind in the country. She also isolated its partnership with Southeast Community College (SCC) to create the Career Academy, which is “now just hitting its prime,” and the JumpStart Challenge was described as a “reverse pitch competition that asks industry to bring a problem forward, and a solution can be created through technology.” Last but not least, Birdsall led the creation of LaunchLNK, funding and mentorship program for budding businesses and concepts. Birdsall is quick to credit the team that surrounds her. “I got to choose my team,” she said. “It makes such a difference when you can hit on all cylinders with an extremely competent team that has the same vision.

“Our staff are given the ability to innovate, to be in charge of their destination, and to be free thinkers,” Birdsall continued, “and you get so much more from the folks that you work with when they’re having fun doing it.” Birdsall entered the Chamber world in much the same way as others, rather serendipitously. With visions of owning a restaurant, Birdsall’s degree in food science was applied as a dietician at Bryan Health for nine years. From there, she traveled the state as a pharmaceuticals rep. “But it wasn’t a job that I enjoyed,” she said, indicating the position didn’t complement her extroversion. Fortuitously, the chamber was creating a program to promote Lincoln as a regional medical center to smaller communities, who would then serve as referral sources for the capital city’s specialty facilities. “I love my community and wanted to do something to advance and grow it,” she said. Birdsall would go on to step into roles, including Lincoln Convention and Visitors Bureau executive director and VP, before being named president of the Chamber in 2006. Jason Ball is stepping in to Birdsall’s shoes as chamber and LPED president in the new year. “I couldn’t be more pleased,” Birdsall said, adding that Ball is a “boomerang” professional and former employee. “When you leave a job and have invested so much time, blood, sweat and tears into it, you want it to be OK. I have such respect and trust in Jason and his vision for Lincoln.” Birdsall looks forward to having the freedom to travel in a big way. A trip to Palm Springs in February and a 54-hour drive to Alaska are on the horizon. “The other thing that I love to do is to buy and sell antiques,” she said, noting the skill was honed as a traveling pharma rep. “I would find things that were unique. One thing I really exploited was metal lunch boxes. I got connected with two different people that bought every lunch box.” She looks forward to developing a new, successful niche. And she encourages future leaders and community movers-and-shakers to “take risks. Don’t be afraid of taking something on that feels uncomfortable. Yeah, you might fail but failure is where you learn.” “I think it’s so important that people take responsibility and get involved in their community.”

BUILDING COMMUNITY

OMAHA staple DIONNE WHITFIELD AND OWNER ORLANDA WHITFIELD

Bringing the Flavor

STILL POPPIN’ GOURMET POPCORN BECOMES NORTH OMAHA FAVORITE Still Poppin’ Gourmet Popcorn has built its community reach and aims to further it beyond Nebraska.

The Vision Orlanda Whitfield, owner of Still Poppin’ Gourmet Popcorn, fondly remembers making popcorn as a young girl with her grandmother. Her mother and grandmother taught her everything she knows about cooking, and she knew that someday, she was going to use her creativity and passion for food to do something big. In December 2016, Whitfield set out to start her own popcorn business. “There wasn’t a popcorn shop in North Omaha, so I thought it would be the perfect spot,” she explained. And she was right. Today she runs the shop with her sister Dionne and son Fonta Jones, Jr., along with a small staff. Customers can’t get enough — and they keep coming back for more. Her vision is for Still Poppin’ to become a nationally self-funded, Black, woman-owned gourmet popcorn business. Locally, she aims to continue to bring jobs and economic empowerment into the community.

Bringing the Flavor Housed in a refurbished shipping container, Still Poppin’ is located on North 24th Street in the Fair Deal Village MarketPlace. Because the space doesn’t have a kitchen, popcorn is made at No More Empty Pots, a nonprofit that offers commercial kitchens for rental for food entrepreneurs. The company creates a variety of popcorn flavors, and the base for its caramel popcorn comes from Whitfield’s grandmother’s recipe that she learned when she was only 11 years old. Popcorn kernels come from local farms, and the aim is to use the highest quality ingredients possible to create each batch. Some of the most popular products include Cookie’s N Cream, White Cheddar Caramel, Cheesy Cajun, Strawberry Banana, Honey Butter Kettle, and Candy Cane Lane. There is also a caramel popcorn infused with Hennessy cognac. The Omaha Mix is one of the company’s most well-loved items, which is handcrafted caramel smothered in cheddar cheese.

Community Support

The Future is Bright

Since day one, Whitfield has been committed to being involved in the community. “We are successful because of our community support,” she shared. “Sports teams and dance teams love our fundraising program. They sell our popcorn and 50% goes to their organization. We have helped teams travel to national competitions and get new uniforms.” The fundraising program allows teams to raise money with no minimum orders and no upfront costs. When pandemic restrictions forced them to think outside the box, the team at Still Poppin’ Gourmet Popcorn decided to pivot their business model. Thankfully, they saw success with more online sales, and have even shipped to customers outside of the state. Whitfield said that so far they have sent gift boxes to 20 different states, even as far as Alaska and Hawaii. Still Poppin’ also regularly attends pop-up events throughout the city to help build brand awareness and increase revenue.

Whitfield believes the future looks bright for her business. After some staffing challenges, she said she has a good team in place and is ready to expand. The goal is to not only expand the business locally, but to other states, too. She is getting ready to launch a monthly subscription box membership service for customers. The subscription includes four to five bags of popcorn and a small surprise gift each month. Customers can choose from sweet and savory flavors, or premium flavors with chocolates and nuts. No matter what, Whitfield said that she plans to keep sharing love with her products. “We love our community,” she said. “We love our popcorn, and we love making it for people who love popcorn.”

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?R

40 under 40 KIRSTIN RICKETTS, VICE PRESIDENT, VINTAGE FINANCIAL GROUP

Paying Dividends

KIRSTIN RICKETS GROWS, EVOLVES INTO NEW VENTURES There was a time when Kirstin Ricketts was sure she’d found her true calling in life. A year after graduating from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the then20-something- year old took on the heavily male-dominated financial planning world by co-founding her own firm, Vintage Financial Group. In so doing, she introduced a humanistic approach to clients in the financial planning space. “The reason why we started Vintage Financial Group is because we wanted to help people talk about and plan for their dreams,” she said. “Financial planning is a unique industry where you can talk to someone about their biggest fears and the things they would anticipate or hope for most. Then you can actually do something about it. You can help them build towards that. “It’s a great privilege to get to talk to someone about the things that maybe someone will only whisper about, where they say, ‘I’m working towards this, but what I really want is that.’ Getting to help them build towards that is just the greatest privilege.” The founders’ instincts proved correct and Vintage Financial Group thrived, catapulting to the upper echelon of financial planning companies thanks to a client-centric approach that Ricketts continues to hone as vice president. Her

success in the industry doesn’t surprise her former boss in the least. “One thing I admire greatly about her, she approached her professional career from a very servant perspective,” said Cliff Karthauser, now an executive coach and public speaker. “That’s pretty rare when you find someone in their 20s, which is when I first connected with her. She put the relationship of the people that she was working with and the financial decisions that she had to make on their behalf ahead of everything. “She never even clearly understood how she was paid for a long period of time. She said, ‘Cliff, I don’t want to know. That doesn’t matter to me. I know that if I do the right things and I take care of my clients and I build advocacy, that part will take care of itself.’ It allowed her to open up a tremendous referral network because she took care of people and they fell in love with her.”

Seeing Results Ricketts’ professional responsibilities have changed to a more consultative role. Today she’s mainly focused on fund trends and keeping eyes on what clients need to prepare for as their needs have changed over time.

You sit down with someone and help them plan for what is going to happen if their spouse dies, then you sit across the table from a widow whose husband died and the plan works. It’s really a beautiful thing to get to be involved in. - KIRSTIN RICKETTS, VICE PRESIDENT, VINTAGE FINANCIAL GROUP

“When you first start doing financial planning, you start planning for the what-ifs. You know, the ‘What if this happens?’ or ‘When I get there…,’” she said. “After doing it for a while, you start to see those things happen. You sit down with someone and help them plan for what is going to happen if their spouse dies, then you sit across the table from a widow whose husband died and the plan works. It’s really a beautiful thing to get to be involved in.” Today, the company has grown to a dozen employees, some of whom are homegrown through Vintage Financial Group’s internship program. Even those who move on Ricketts tracks like a proud parent to see their success in various fields. “We have always had interns in the office from local high schools and colleges and we provide a lot of mentoring through that program,” she said. “That has really been fun. One, it keeps some freshness in the office. And two, some of the people who were originally our high school interns have high-level positions at big companies in Omaha now. It’s a joy to watch them succeed.”

Spiritual Journey That would be success enough for anyone, but as the years have played out, Ricketts discovered the firm, and financial planning in general, was only one aspect of her life’s mission. The other came bolting to the forefront in the most agonizing way possible. “Since the time that I got 40 Under 40, we had a daughter with heart failure,” she said. “I experienced those fears that everybody talks about.” Seeing her infant daughter’s recovery inspired new goals, including co-creating Hold Loosely, Live Freely, a spiritual blog. She’s written about the seminal event in an entry entitled, “Our Daughter’s Miracle,” and talks often about how the incident inspired a whole new chapter in her life. “What I’ve found with financial planning is, you help people plan for the best things and the worst things. But there is still the ache and I think there can be a spiritual component to that ache that only God is going to subside,” said Ricketts, now 40. “That is where some of my focus has been. That’s not necessarily in the practice, but I’ve seen God do really amazing things. God saved our daughter. “The whole goal of that blog is to say, ‘Let’s hold loosely to the things that the world is telling us are so important and let’s find the freedom and peace that we actually want, that’s going to be found in the eyes of our God.’”

COMMUNITY CONNECTOR

WOMEN WHO rock CANDICE PRICE, ENTREPRENEUR

MOVER and shaker

CANDICE PRICE BUILDS COMMUNITIES TO ACHIEVE MORE Candice Price is the very definition of “multi-hyphenate” (she jokes that “serial entrepreneur” is seriously overused). Licensed real estate broker. Executive Director of the GROW Nebraska Women’s Business Center. Owner of Home Team Auto Sales. Owner of HT Towing & Repair. Independent insurance adjuster. Single mother of two. Owner of Sapphire Grill. Price is all of these things, and a flurry of other roles and titles so vast it would arguably be overly confusing to mention them all here. A native of South Florida and the daughter of a Division 1 track coach, Candice Price always had an affinity for sales. “It’s always been my thing,” she said. “I can sell anything as long as I can understand it, and my first job was in telemarketing.” Price is not overstating her sales prowess; she owns one of only two African American woman licensed auto dealerships in the state: Home Team Auto Sales. She and business partner Ron Devers spun off HT Towing & Repair, a for-hire tow truck company. And the duo partnered again on a completely unrelated business, the Sapphire Grill, in 2018.

“We purchased a couple of buildings this year,” Price said of the auto dealership. “We started with $3,500 and bootstrapped it.” As self-described “true foodies,” Price and Devers drove five hours to pick up the trailer that would mark the start of Sapphire Grill. New equipment was incorporated into the mobile food venue, which now caters everything from office parties to neighborhood gatherings to children’s baseball games. And it is Price’s first foray into car sales that enabled her skill and passion for real estate to ultimately flourish. In fact, the HGTV fan recalled having an early interest in real estate investor Carleton Sheets’ No Money Down Payment program as a child; the program was heavily popularized by infomercials that marketed his real estate curricula. “I wanted to be able to flip houses, but I didn’t have the capital to do that,” she said. “I did have enough to do a few cars. And that got me into my first house, and I did the first flip.” She would become licensed in the state of Nebraska as a real estate broker. Price is also licensed in six states as an independent insurance adjustor, and is commissioned as a notary public in Nebraska, too.

I can sell anything as long as I can understand it. - CANDICE PRICE, ENTREPRENEUR

Support that Shapes us

Before all of these ventures and distinctions, Price was a mechanical engineering and African American studies student at the University of Oklahoma, the state that so many of her family members called “home.” As a nontraditional student, she also built a village of sorts among educators and fellow students. Teachers allowed Price to bring her then 8-month-old daughter, Sha’lise, with her to class. When Price couldn’t watch her, other students stepped up to help. Now almost 20 (as of January), Sha’lise is a civil engineering major at North Carolina A&T State University. “From there,” Price said, a reference to her alma mater, “I was hired in the oil and gas industry and picked up by the railroad. They sent me to Houston and, in 2008, the economy failed and they said, ‘We need you to go to Omaha next week.” That was in 2009. Between 2003 and 2007, various internships exposed Price to the likes of field engineering, exploration and production, and pipelines and terminals engineering. Between 2008 to 2015, she worked for Union Pacific Railroad. “I worked with them in a couple of management positions, and with a $50 million book of business,” she said. Her career at UP was logistics focused. An opportunity presented itself to enter the real estate industry — something she had wanted to do while at the company. As she reflects on her previous and current work, Price said, “With everything I’ve done, I’m used to being one of a ‘few,’ or the ‘only one.’” She referred to the lack of women in the male-dominated auto

dealership space, with the disparity even more pronounced among women of color. This is current day but, back in 2004, Price recalled interning with another railroad as a mechanical field engineer in a small community in northern Montana. It was much the same story, only, “I was one of six Black people in the town,” Price said. “Many people are interested and inquisitive when you look different from them … And you’re setting the bar for what they think about [for example] women in car sales.” Additionally, as a “single parent in the truest sense of the word,” mom to both Sha’lise and 5-year-old kindergartener, Jada, Price emphasized the “village” — those around her who believed in her, and helped out when she needed it. She is doing much the same in her role as executive director of the GROW Nebraska Women’s Business Center, which celebrated its grand opening in May. “The women’s business center can make things a little easier … with a little bit of access, it makes things a little easier for the next person,” she said. In addition to a goal of owning a franchise car dealership, going forward Price sees the GNWBC positioned well to be among the biggest champions of women-owned businesses in the state. “And we are on a great trajectory,” she said. A nod to the up-swing, Price said the center has already been in a position to invest in additional hires; most recently, Eden Butler was onboarded as client coordinator.

MIDLANDS BUSINESS JOURNAL

VERDANT ACCOUNTINGheads to SEDONA! CREATIVE PLANNING TO MITIGATE TAXES The challenges of COVID-19 facing Omaha-area businesses have been significant—closures, lost revenues, staffing shortages, supply chain issues, and other concerns. Verdant, an Omaha-area public accounting firm, partners with its clients to help them succeed—and often thrive—in such challenging times. Tax planning is essential to managing uncertainty. Many taxpayers only address their tax matters during the tax filing season, and by then many tax optimization opportunities may have been lost. Verdant Accounting heavily emphasizes tax planning. It encourages its clients to be proactive—not reactive—with their tax matters. Some taxpayers can benefit from tax planning every year, while others may only intermittently require such services due to special or non-recurring circumstances such as: the sale of a business, investment sales, cashing out an inheritance, larger-than-usual retirement savings distributions, significant charitable giving, and other major tax events. The pandemic has prompted even greater need for and interest in such planning. Tax planning can generate many positive outcomes. Planning helps clients to better manage their taxable income, optimize the amount and timing of tax losses, generate larger tax refunds, budget for tax payments, and maximize eligibility for various tax credits. Besides the financial benefits, tax planning can help relieve client stress and anxiety over tax matters. Planning also gives clients and their Verdant tax partners more time to review and consider complicated or nonstandard transactions potentially impacting their income taxes. Not all tax matters are black and white; considerable discretion and “grey area” exist in tax reporting and administration. Tax planning with Verdant can help clients avoid taking shaky tax positions the IRS and other

taxing authorities might challenge, often with costly consequences. Alternately, planning can help identify opportunities where it is reasonable and favorable to a client to be more aggressive with tax reporting. Lastly, and perhaps mostly importantly, tax planning offers great opportunities to build relationships between Verdant and its clients. These relationships allow Verdant to be more knowledgeable and responsive to clients’ needs and business circumstances. Tax laws, IRS enforcement, and government programs are ever-changing, especially in pandemic times. Verdant assists its clients with staying atop changes impacting clients’ financial and tax matters. For example, Verdant has coordinated with many clients to claim government COVID business relief funds such as the Paycheck Protection Program and Nebraska Stabilization Grant. Claiming these funds was much easier to do for clients heavily involved with Verdant through tax planning and other support services. In addition to tax planning services, Verdant offers tax preparation, bookkeeping, payroll support, and attestation services. Verdant also goes beyond the usual suite of CPA firm services and offers HR consulting, wealth management, and marketing services. As the next tax season approaches, Verdant is eager to help existing and new clients plan for success.
