LANDSCAPE DESIGN STUDIO I
LANDSCAPE DESIGN STUDIO I
JORDI BELLMUNT + ADA SÁNCHEZ
In Landscape Design Studio I (MBLandArch) the student discovers the approach to the keys of a landscape architecture project. Students are professionals trained in their own disciplines in different countries, who undertake the specific knowledge and sensitivity of landscaping studies. The course develops various exercises of different level of complexity: from small projects seeking to test different visions of the known, adding new and adjusted technical definitions, to projects which response is built on the strength of the idea. These exercises try to deepen in the reflexive act of the project at a new discipline. This aid comes in addition to interventions and small seminars that reflect today’s culture related to landscaping.

Designer: Lina Marcela Flórez In this exercise the student is asked to put himself in a renowned landscape architect’s shoes to design a garden for a special appointed client. In this case, the student becomes Shlomo Aaronson designing a garden for Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s Little Prince. Through this strategy, the student gets to know and understand the professional’s work under the demands of a client with a clearly defined personality. As a starting point, the proposal recreates part of the planet B612 described in Saint-Exupéry’s book and, by extracting from the reading the most important issues the Little Prince has to face during the story, Aaronson’s techniques are used to develop this imaginary world. The main value of this project is the way some recurring elements of Shlomo Aaronson’s designs are turned into a landscape where the most important traits of the book’s main character are still present.

TOGETHER BUT NOT SCRAMBLED
Designer: Jorge Díaz This proposal for Ronda Sant Antoni starts from a historical analysis of Barcelona’s walled past and its relation with Cerdà’s urban development plan. The four main streets that embrace the historical centre (Ronda Sant Pau, Sant Antoni, Sant Pere and Universitat) work as a limit between two highly differentiated urban structures with very different realities. The project has the aim of establishing common criteria to harmonise these four arteries, creating a kinder ring for the pedestrian. Given these basic premises, the proposal modifies Ronda Sant Antoni’s main cut, giving more space to pedestrian sidewalks both in Ciutat Vella and Eixample’s sides. Some changes in general mobility are made, enabling the growth of Goya’s square and the extension of the current bicycle lane, as well as allowing new green, drainage and resting areas.

HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT
Designer: Luisa R-G Wiggin This project for Ronda Sant Antoni’s renovation focuses efforts in preserving and reinforcing the strengths of Goya’s square, altering minimally the current traffic distribution to integrate a bicycle lane. Existing vegetation is kept and new trees are added. The present image of the square prevails, thought the current asphalt pavement is replaced by permeable asphalt, and two new granite-paved resting areas are included. The location, its constant activity and vitality are seen as positive features and also enhanced by the proposal. The aim is to create an attractive space, both at daytime and night-time, by adding 3 small glass and steel cubicles (covered resting spaces and toilet) combined with individual artificial stone seats. New urban lighting elements are also added in relation to new furniture, all of them matching Goya’s square characteristic nightlife.

OUR TRASH
Designer: MĂĄrcia MiguĂŠis In this exercise the student is invited to design a 50 sqm ephemeral garden for Radicepura Garden Festival, within the framework of Mediterranean culture. This proposal is centred in the precious and beautiful Mediterranean Sea, which under its numerous qualities hides a huge and ignored problem: the trash accumulated in its waters and its effect on biodiversity destruction, 80% of which is due to plastic and polluted runoff. The aim of the project is to condemn these practices by designing a path through a conceptual sea: continuous plastic tubes containing water and dirt, force the visitor to become aware of the huge problem the Mediterranean already has. Embracing the limited budget available for the intervention, the project is able to find the way of creating a powerful effect on the visitor and achieves its initial claiming purpose.
