My reasons for choosing Edward Steichen as a photographer to interpret and help with my starting points, are because I found that the photos are simple and plain but have a strong impact and are eye-catching with a variation of different interpretations. The way in which the photos are very simple but have a big impact inspired me to have a simple final piece that I would be able to create a strong atmosphere and tone through the images.

Scott Jessimen- “This image was taken on East Scotland Street Lane in Edinburgh on a foggy night, it was a fairly surreal moment walking through the city with the low fog. I was actually on my way home when I spotted this scene and it was a must to photograph, the street lamp emitting a nice haze after bouncing off the fog was just brilliant.

I like the way in which the light has made the paper brighten, although it is still keeping the inside of the paper darking tones, Creating depth.

With these two images I have mirrored them against each other to once again create depth in the photos. I like the way in which the text is unfocused and the image looks never ending.

LITERAL

TECHNICAL

Within the image there is a rustic tone. There is a large slanted building with a small branch infront of it. At the bottom of the image there is a city environment, with bright lights and people. There is also some similar buildings in the background and smaller trees in the background.

The size of the building incomparison to the tree gives a sense of space and size. The image would have be captured from a point that made the building look in the distance and the branch close and in front. The buildings in the background obviously aren’t the main focus. There is a edited effect on the image which gives it the style of bringing out the red tones and lacking a variety of colour

SYMBOLIC I believe that the photo represents a form of pollution caused by industrial duties. The busy city setting beneath the building shows a size comparison between natural and unnatural.

CULTURAL The image was taken in 1904 however not printed until 1909. The photo links to me in the 21st century as this is when large industrial images began to be built and production moved to mainly factory work.

The Zone System is a photographic technique for determining optimal film exposure and development, formulated by Ansel Adams and Fred Archer.[1] High key photographs - A style of lighting that is bright, even, and produces little contrast between light and dark areas of the scene. A high key photograph has chiefly light tones, usually with little tonal contrast. Low key photographs - of reduced intensity; restrained; understated. A low key photograph has chiefly dark tones, usually with little tonal contrast. Full contrast - where there is difference between the light and dark tones across all the zones. Lighting - artificial or natural I think that the photo is a low key photograph this is due to the way in which none of the tones are strong they all have a low intensity. Another reason for me believing this is due to there not being much tonal change within the photo.

LITERAL

TECHNICAL

A bright light-most likely artificial. Some bollards and paving slabs.

With a camera during the night.

SYMBOLIC

CULTURAL

The bollards could symbolise how objects can become barriers to you moving forward in live.

The photo is a recent photo-due to the surrounding being modern.

Assignment 3: Photog

grapher Interpretations

Assignment 3: Edward steichen Photographer Interpretations

I chose the image by Edward Steichen as I liked the way a simple object had been transformed so drastically. The way the shadows make the polo’s appear larger than they are is another factor that makes me like the photograph. The shadows that were created in both the orginal and my interpretations have helped me to develop my final idea- the strong use of shadows, to create effect.

Assignment 3: Photographer Interpretations

I chose this photo as I found it very effective due to there being a strong atmosphere being created by the reflection of the trees in water.

Assignment 3: Photographer Interpretations

I chose this photo as I liked the way in which the road appears never ending. You can also take some cultural meaning from the photo- the way in which the road is never ending and free and that is how everyone wants their lives to be.

Assignment 3: Photographer Interpretations

I liked this photo due to the strong colour tones, and the way in which the light shines through the trees. The image reminded me of a warm summers morning therefore gives off a delight and warming tone.

Assignment 3: Photographer Interpretations

I chose this photo as there is a strong difference between the last one, although they are taken by the same photographer. I liked the cold tones and the way the each tree is shown in the image.
