Be application ready

To apply to study with us you will need to get application ready. To do this you’ll need to make sure you have created an email account so that you can apply online.

You’ll also need to know what course you want to apply for. You can come along to our campus Open Events to find out everything you need to know about our courses, meet our tutors and see our incredible facilities.

Once you know what you want to apply for, you can head over to our website www.mbro.ac.uk

We have online application forms available for you to complete, simply find the A Level or Mix it up section and click apply now. For A Levels you will only need to complete one application. If you want to study a Mix it up programme, please apply for the Mix it up course you want to study.

Information session

Following your application, you’ll be contacted by our Admissions Team to arrange an information session. This is nothing to worry about, it is a good chance to visit the College and meet your tutors. It also allows us to get to know what your career goals are and helps us work out if your chosen course is right for you.

Offer You will then be offered a place on your course. This will either be via email or letter. If you change your mind about what course you want to study, don’t worry. Contact us and we will be able to get you onto your preferred course!

Enrolment

Once you have received your GCSE results, you will be able to enrol onto a course in August ready to start your studies in September. Can’t decide what A Level subjects to study? No problem! Apply for A levels and make your final decision about your subject choices during enrolment. You will be invited to attend a taster session where you will get a taste for life as a Middlesbrough College Sixth Form student and find out more about your course. Taking A Level students higher

A Levels are academic courses and Universities, and Employers love them!

A Levels are a good option if you are academic, and you want to progress to University. They allow you to keep your options open and study a range of degree programmes or progress straight into employment.

We also offer a range of A Level equivalent applied courses. These are vocationally orientated qualifications and are generally assessed through a mix of coursework and external examinations. These courses are ideal if you enjoy learning in a practical and work-related way.

Not sure which subjects to pick? Don’t worry! You can get a feel for life at MC6 and our courses by coming along to our bridging sessions.

Once your GCSE exams have finished, you’ll be invited along to spend a few days at MC6, to try out different subjects and find out more about life as an A Level student.

We will send out invites in the post, all you need to do is reply with your subject choices.

Taking you to Uni

Many of our A Level students choose to progress to University after completing their studies with us and we are highly successful in helping them to secure a place on their chosen degree programme!

We offer careers advice and guidance to help you make your decision about University. We also offer guest speakers from Universities across the country and visits to University Open Days, organised and funded by the College. Your personal tutor is central in supporting you with your UCAS application and you will receive dedicated 1:1 time to be supported.

Our dedicated Russell Group Co-coordinator also provides support with application and interview preparation if you are thinking of progressing to a Russell Group University! Our students are offered specialist support, advice and guidance on making applications to the top Universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. A Level students have access to at least three supported entry schemes for University. This can lead to lower UCAS offers from the likes of Durham, Leeds and Newcastle University.

We will provide a free loan laptop device for all full time students. This will support your learning, equip you with the tools to succeed and help you to develop and showcase your digital skills.

MC Click will help to develop your digital skills, allow you to complete your work and showcase your skills. You can capture activities on video, create and share, record group discussions and tutor feedback, all with the click of a button!

All students will use Microsoft Teams for their work! Microsoft Teams is a fantastic tool and will help you to manage your College work, ask tutors questions, safely store your documents and prepare you for the world of work.

Your health and wellbeing should be your number one priority, so we’ve made it ours too! Our Student Services Team are on hand to provide a range of services to support you throughout your studies. This includes dedicated safeguarding and welfare officers and our counselling team, which is free and confidential for all students.

We are proud to have a large team of experienced and trained staff who can support you with your studies and we are committed to providing a learning environment in which there is equality for all members of our community.

The Additional Learning Support (ALS) Team are experienced and trained staff who can offer a wide range of support services. We will work closely with you to ensure you are provided with an individual support package.

The Additional Learning Support Hub is located on the ground floor of the College and provides you with access to our experienced staff and facilities across the day, including quiet study spaces and a relaxing social space.

Our University Centre offers you a practical alternative to the traditional University model where you are able to study University Level qualifications right up to master's level, whilst benefitting from our specialist teaching environments and activities linked to employers and industry.

Professor Brian Cox opened our University Centre! The centre includes state-of-the-art teaching spaces, IT facilities and a learning resource centre, which will help to prepare learners for careers in the engineering, manufacturing, and the digital sectors.

Types of degrees you can progress to

❱❱ Single Honours Degree

A bachelor’s degree is the most common undergraduate degree which typically takes three years of full-time study. Choosing a course in one subject is known as a single honours degree.

❱❱ Major/Minor Honours Degree

You may also be able to study a minor subject alongside the major subject for a portion of your degree, also known as a major/minor honours degree. The degree title names the major subject with the minor subject afterwards, for example Psychology with Criminology or Law with International Relations.

❱❱ Combined or Joint Honours Degree

Studying two or three major subjects as part of a bachelor’s degree is called a combined or joint honours degree. You’ll pick several modules per subject. Each subject you take will hold equal weight towards your final degree grade. Examples of joint honours degrees include Law and Spanish or Accounting and Business.

❱❱ Degree with placement year

Referred to as a ‘sandwich year’, this qualification is typically a four-year degree with the third year spent either studying abroad or working in a placement. This is a great opportunity to gain valuable experience learning in a new country or working in the sector you wish to be employed in.

❱❱ Degree apprenticeship

Degree apprenticeships allow you to study towards a bachelor’s degree part-time while also working. They can take between three and six years to complete and are offered by Universities in partnership with companies and professional bodies. You won’t be required to fund your degree apprenticeship, as both your employer and the government will do so.

How will I be assessed?

2 years – Eduqas

In component 1, you will develop work for a personal investigation into an idea, issue, concept or theme supported by written material which will count for 60% of your total A Level mark.

In component 2 you will produce personal work which will count for 40% of your total A Level mark.

Biology 2 years – AQA

How will I be assessed?

There are three written exams at the end of the 2nd year. Within the qualification there are 12 assessed practical activities stipulated by the awarding body over the 2 years resulting in the completion of the Practical EndorsementCertificate – this is a Pass/Fail element of the course.

Business Studies

How will I be assessed?

2 years – Edexcel

There are three written exams at the end of the 2nd year. There is no coursework attached to this specification.

Chemistry 2 years – OCR

How will I be assessed?

There are three written exams at the end of the 2nd year. Within the qualification there are 12 assessed practical activities stipulated by the awarding body over the 2 years resulting in the completion of the Practical EndorsementCertificate – this is a Pass/Fail element of the course.

Computer Science

How will I be assessed?

2 years – AQA

There are two exams at the end of the 2nd year – one is theory (40%), and one is an on-screen practical exam testing programming and knowledge (40%). There is also an independent project that is completed, and this accounts for 20% of the overall grade.

Economics

How will I be assessed?

2 years – Edexcel

All of the content that you study will be assessed by three examinations at the end of the second year. All exams will consist of multiple choice and essay style questions.

English Language 2 years – AQA

How will I be assessed?

The qualification consists of one written exam based around language (40%) and one written exam based on language varieties (40%) which are taken at the end of the 2nd year.

You will also complete an independent piece of work on Language investigation, this is around 2000 words and accounts for 20% of the total A Level.

English Literature

How will I be assessed?

2 years – AQA

The qualification consists of one written exam based on the Theme of Love through the ages (40%) and one written exam focusing on texts with shared contexts (40%) which are taken at the end of the 2nd year.

You will also complete an independent piece of work which is a comparative critical study of two texts, at least one of which must have been written pre-1900, this accounts for 20% of the total A level.

Our students are offered specialist support, advice and guidance on making applications to the top Universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.

Environmental Science

How will I be assessed?

2 years – AQA

Assessment is made up of two 3-hour exams at the end of the course, questions are a combination of multiple choice, short answer and extended writing questions.

Film Studies

How will I be assessed?

2 years – WJEC

There are 2 written exams at the end of the second year, one focussing on Varieties of film and filmmaking (35%) and the other on Global filmmaking perspectives (35%). There is also a production piece (screenplay or short film) with evaluative analysis which accounts for 30% of the total qualification.

Further Mathematics

How will I be assessed?

2 years – Edexcel

This course is 100% examination. You will complete three written papers at the end of the second year.

A Levels

Geography

How will I be assessed?

2 years – OCR

Assessment on this course consists of three written papers taken at the end of the second year: - Physical Systems (22%), Human Interaction (22%) and Geographical Debates (36%). There is a also a Geography Investigation that is an independent project worth 20% of the final A Level grade.

Geology 2 years – WJEC

How will I be assessed?

There are 3 assessments in this qualification – 2 written examinations on Fundamentals of Geology (41%) and Scientific Literacy in Geology (37%). Then there is a practical assessment in timed conditions Practical Skills in Geology (22%), and the practical endorsement element of the course also must be completed.

History

How will I be assessed?

2 years – AQA

The course is assessed through two 2-hour 30min written examinations with essay style questions that cover breadth and depth of the historical content (80%) and a Historical investigation (20%).

How will I be assessed?

2 years – OCR

There are 2 written examinations taken at the end of the second year in the areas of Media Messages (35%) and Evolving Media (35%). There is also a piece of work where students create a cross-media product for an intended audience in response to a set brief. This gives them the opportunity to work independently & develop expertise (30%).

Photography 2 years – Eduqas

How will I be assessed?

Coursework based - Students keep a sketchbook (either a physical sketchbook or online sketchbook), design sheets, presentation, journal or similar to keep a log of how their ideas have developed throughout the course and how they have produced a set of carefully considered final outcomes. There is also 15-hour period of supervised time at the end.

Physics

How will I be assessed?

2 years – AQA

There are 3 written exams at the end of the 2nd year. Within the qualification there are 12 assessed practical activities stipulated by the awarding body over the 2 years resulting in the completion of the Practical Endorsement Certificate –this is a Pass/Fail element of the course.

Politics 2 years – Edexcel

How will I be assessed?

This course has 3 examinations, each 2-hour in length and worth 33.3%, taken at the end of the second year. The areas covered are: 1. Government and politics of the UK. 2. Government and politics of the USA and comparative politics and 3. Political ideas.

Psychology 2 years – AQA

How will I be assessed?

There are three 2-hour written exams at the end of the second year, each paper is worth 33.3% of the final grade. All papers are assessed with multiple choice, short answers and extended writing questions.

Religious Studies with 2 years – OCR Philosophy & Ethics

How will I be assessed?

The A Level consists of three written exams that are taken at the end of your second year. Each paper is 2-hours long and worth 33.3% of the final grade. Papers are in Philosophy of religion, Religion and ethics, and developments in religious thought.

Sociology

How will I be assessed?

2 years – AQA

There are three 2-hour written exams at the end of the second year, each paper is worth 33.3% of the final grade. The assessment style consists of some short answer questions and a number of extended writing questions.

In 2021, 65.2% of working-age graduates were in high-skilled employment, compared to 77.4% of postgraduates and 24.3% of non-graduates.

The course is assessed continuously throughout the year and is a mixture of external exams, controlled assessments, and internally assessed assignments.

Applied Science - Level 3 2 year – Edexcel

How will I be assessed?

The course is assessed continuously throughout the two years and is a mixture of external exams, controlled assessments and internally assessed assignments. Content is a mixture of theory and practical science.

You will study 1 A Level or A Level equivalent (from a selection of courses) alongside this course. The course is assessed continuously throughout the two years and is a mixture of external exams, controlled assessments, and internally assessed assignments.

T Levels are an alternative to A Levels. This 2-year qualification will help you to build the future that you want. You’ll spend 80% of your time in the classroom and 20% of your time in the workplace, putting the skills you’ve learnt into action. Our courses have been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses so that they meet the needs of industry and prepare you for work.

T Levels provide the skills, knowledge and experience you need to open the door to highly skilled employment, higher level study or an apprenticeship.

T Levels are assessed through external examinations and an employer-set project (relating to 7 core skills and behaviours), there are also externally set assignments and the completion of a 45 day work placement which has a series of targets to achieve.
