Your study programmes

When you study with us, we want you to achieve more than your qualification. We are passionate about helping you achieve your future goals, whether that includes progressing to University, an apprenticeship, further study, or employment.

Your study programme consists of everything that is in your timetable and is designed to prepare you for your next steps. Each study programme is made up of the following components:

1 - Your core qualification

Your core qualification is the study option you choose after your GCSEs (e.g. A Levels, or a vocational course, Apprenticeship, or T Level).

4 - THRIVE Personal Development

2 - Maths & English

Maths & English are two of the most important skill sets a person can have and are an essential foundation for every career. If you do not get the GCSE results you expected for maths and English, resits will be added to your timetable to help you achieve them.

Personal Development sessions will be automatically scheduled into your timetable to help build your confidence, communication, and valuable life skills. These include team building, first aid, UCAS application support, and more.

You will also benefit from additional extras that are designed to enrich your life at College! Examples include Safeguarding and Prevent training, enrichment activities, and sports.

3 - Work Experience

We have fantastic industry links and work with lots of employers in the North East to ensure you gain the skills you need for the future. Depending on your core qualification, you may spend approximately 10 days with a local employer for work experience.

Students studying core qualifications like a T Level or a vocational course like Health & Social Care may have more work experience as part of their course. Most T Level programmes include a 45 day work placement.

Music Technology

Luke started his journey at Middlesbrough College as a student on the Sound and Music Technology degree programme. Now, he is working for the College on the other side of the classroom as a Technician & Lecturer for the VPAC department.

“I loved studying for my degree in Sound and Music Technology at Middlesbrough College’s University Centre. The course was fantastic, and I really enjoyed all the modules I studied. I was thrilled to receive a first-class honours degree and it was wonderful to attend my Graduation to celebrate with my friends, family and tutors.”

Here are just a few of our

Middlesbrough College Alumni

It’s important to us that we stay in touch with our students and apprentices once they have left us to find out where life takes them. Our students go on to achieve amazing things and we couldn’t be prouder of their success!

Rachel engineered her dream career in STEM and is now working as an assistant fleet engineer for Network Rail, a diverse role that sees her travel across the country carrying out essential maintenance works and repairs on tracks.

“I loved every minute of my time at the College, and everyone was so supportive and encouraging. I want other young people to feel that too and to know that there’ll always be people who will believe in you and give you a chance, you just need to be willing to take a chance too.”

Callum is now the co-founder of CB Social, a Teesside based digital marketing agency who specialise in social media marketing and content creation and have clients across the globe!

“The College boasts brilliant tutors who really care about their student's education.

I was invited to join the College’s digital advisory board because of the experience I have in industry, so it is strange to now be working so closely with my former tutors and sharing information with them about the needs of the sector.”

Emily Baxter Level 3 Production Arts

After her Level 3 course, Emily progressed to the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) to study Technical Production in Stage and Screen. Since then, she has landed her first job since graduating, working as a Production Technician for the Disney smash hit musical at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.

“I absolutely loved studying at Middlesbrough College. All the tutors were super friendly and approachable. I would like to thank my tutor Claire Teesdale who was a huge support to me during my time at College- I wouldn’t be where I am today without her.

“I would 100% recommend this course to anyone who is interested in pursuing a career in live events and entertainment.”

Since finishing her A Levels in at the College, Iman has completed an undergraduate degree in Biology at Durham University and is now in the 2nd Year of her PHD where she is researching the behaviour of Mosquitos and their brain activity.

“I had such a positive experience while studying here and it really has given me the best start to my career journey. The tutors have an unrivalled wealth of experience and are such an inspiration – I want to pass that on and inspire the next cohort of students!

“As well as the support from my tutors, I also spoke with the Middlesbrough College Careers team who were incredibly helpful. Without the Careers team’s expert guidance I don’t think I would be where I am today!”

What is a T Level?

A T Level is a Level 3 Technical

Qualification that 16–19-year-olds can study after completing their GCSES. It is classed as a core qualification by the government and is equivalent to three A Levels, an Apprenticeship or Vocational course.

What does a T Level do?

T Levels combine classroom learning with on-the-job experience for specific careers. Each T Level course has been developed in collaboration with employers and providers, ensuring T Level students develop the technical skills and knowledge required by employers in that industry.

How is a T Level different to other post-GCSE qualifications?

T Levels have a larger focus on work placement and have been designed in collaboration with employers to meet industry demands. Due to their strong focus on on-the-job training, each T Level course includes a 45-day work placement.

This work placement, which is completed as part of the T Level, equips students with a taste of a real working environment and a true understanding of industry.

What is the difference between T Levels, A Levels, and Vocational courses?

T Levels, A Levels, and Vocational courses are all classed as core qualifications by the government. However, T Levels have a larger focus on on-the-job training.

A Levels are academic, designed to prepare students for University. Vocational courses offer practical skills and training for specific jobs, but without the structured industry placement that is integral to T Levels.

What is the difference between T Levels and Apprenticeships?

T Levels combine 80% classroom learning with 20% industry placement over two years, providing a mix of academic and practical education. Apprenticeships involve 80% on-the-job training and 20% classroom learning, focusing primarily on practical work experience within a job setting.

Who can study a T Level?

T Levels can be studied by anyone aged 16-18 and students up to age 24 who have an Education, Health and Care Plan.

For specific T Level course requirements, please see the relevant course section for your subject in this guide.

How are T Levels assessed?

T Levels are assessed through practical employer-set projects, assignments and examinations.

Options after T Levels

T Levels are recognised by Universities and employers. After completing a T Level, you can progress to University, skilled employment, an apprenticeship or higher apprenticeship.

T Level entry requirements

To study a T Level you must have a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 5 or above including maths, English, and, for some programmes, science.

Foundation T Levels

If you don't meet the entry requirements for a T Level after your GCSEs, don't worry. Our 1 year T Level Foundation programme offers a highquality route onto your chosen T Level course and provides the additional support you need to prepare.

Entry requirements for the T Level foundation programme are a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 3 and above, including English language, maths, and for some programmes, science. You will also be given an opportunity to study maths and/or English and resist your GCSEs to reach a grade 4/5.

If you're not sure what level is right for you, don't worry. Our experienced staff will talk you through your options after you have submitted your application!

Moritz Cornieje

Mortiz

T Level in Digital Production, Design and Development

Following his successful placement with NorthLink Digital, 18-year-old Moritz Cornieje was offered a permanent role as a software developer alongside his studies.

“When I heard about T Levels I loved the sound of the work placement and getting real, handson experience. It means you can really integrate yourself into the business and quickly prove yourself to be an asset. For some, it can lead to a permanent role, like it has for me.”

Apprenticeships Are you ready to dive straight into work

and earn whilst you learn?

An apprenticeship is a practical, hands-on programme that combines on-the-job training with classroom learning. It is classed as a core qualification and is designed to provide the training you need to kickstart your career in a specific trade or sector.

How does an apprenticeship work?

As an apprentice, you will work under experienced professionals in the workplace, earning a wage while you gain hands-on industry skills and knowledge.

Students choose an apprenticeship in a specific field they are interested in. With this in mind, an apprenticeship is an excellent option if you already know what career sector you would like to work in.

Do I still study at College with an apprenticeship?

Yes, with an apprenticeship you will usually spend one day a week at College, studying for an industry-recognised qualification.

Apprenticeship benefits:

• Earn whilst you learn! Work alongside your studies and earn a wage

• Treated with respect and like an adult

• Receive hands-on-training under the supervision of skilled professionals

• Learn job specific skills that employers are looking for now

• A practical route to learning

• Avoid University loan debts
