Taking you to your dream course

Vocational Courses Apprenticeships A Levels A Levels allow you to keep your options open with focused study of three or four subjects across two years. A Levels are a good option if you are looking to progress to University.

Apprenticeships allow you to earn whilst you learn! You will come to College alongside your job. An apprenticeship is a great choice if you are eager to earn money straight away and build your skills alongside experienced staff.

Vocational courses are more practical and hands on and will equip you with skills in a specific sector area which leads to a job or to University.

Where to start? Course Levels and Entry Requirements Not sure what level is right for you? Take a look at our levels guide to see what you need! Levels Guide Entry Level: These courses will help you build up skills, experience and gain confidence to progress to Level 1. No formal qualifications are needed.

Level 1: These courses will help you progress on to Level 2 courses or into employment. These courses will prepare you with the skills in a specific trade/career. Level 2: These courses allow you to begin specialising in an area you want to pursue as a career. Level 3: These include A Levels, vocational qualifications (including Extended Diplomas, Diplomas, Certificates) and apprenticeships. A triple distinction star grade (D*D*D*) on a Level 3 vocational course is equivalent to three A* grades at A Level. You must have achieved an appropriate Level 2 vocational qualification and/or five GCSEs at grade 4/5 (C) or above. Please see the entry requirements for the course you are interested in studying as each course has specific requirements. Please note for some courses you will be required to start at Level 1 to gain the technical skills required.

Taking the lead on technical training As one of the leaders in STEM Education, we deliver a range of top quality technical training courses that provide clear routes into skilled employment. Our £20m STEM Engineering Centre is a unique and inspirational space, allowing you to learn new skills in a simulated industrial site and gain vital competencies required by the sector. With a focus on hands-on experience, our courses are developed with driving innovation in mind to ensure you are at the forefront of the latest learning and technology. We’re also proud as punch to be in the final phase of being awarded Institute of Technology (IoT) status alongside New College Durham and Newcastle University, meaning we will be the dedicated technical training hub in the Tees Valley. 16

What’s next? T-Level work placements! T-Levels will be available for school leavers from 2021 as an alternative route into further education and will be equivalent to three A Levels.

T-Levels will give you a head Some of the employers we start in knowing what type of work with: job you want to go into after finishing your course. You will be able to enhance your CV and ability to get a job. You can also improve your technical skills and further the learning from your College course.

The T-Level qualification will train you in practical skills and knowledge in your chosen industry, alongside core English, maths and digital skills, and 45 days of work placement with a relevant employer.

With a focus on hands-on experience, T-Levels are an opportunity for employers to shape the way you are trained to meet their future needs.

We are the only College in the Tees Valley to be running T-Level courses from 2021.

T-Levels progress to higher and degree level apprenticeship or technical degrees. We are already piloting extended work placements and many of our courses now offer them!

Jordan studied Level 3 Engineering (Manufacturing) at Middlesbrough College and has just finished the first year of her Engineering Technician apprenticeship at Siemens Healthineers in Oxford.

Four years after completing his A Levels at Middlesbrough College, Liam secured a place on the award-winning graduate leadership development programme with the Civil Service, that offers structured development into a government profession.

This course is ideal for anyone interested in problem solving and knowing how computer systems work and are programmed. The course focuses on computational thinking. This is a kind of reasoning used by both humans and machines. The course has an emphasis on abstract thinking, general problem-solving, algorithmic, mathematical reasoning, scientific and engineering-based thinking. Entry requirements

5 or more GCSEs (not equivalents) including English at grade 5 or above. Grade 6 in maths. University opportunities

This course is a stimulation and challenging course which is highly regarded by employers and Universities. It is studied as an additional subject to A Level mathematics. You will gain knowledge of a wide variety of mathematical techniques and develop skills in problem solving and analytical thinking. The course builds upon all GCSE work, especially algebra.

This course allows you to explore a range of natural landscapes including glaciers, drylands and coasts. You will have the opportunity to explore a range of geographical debates such as the hazardous earth, exploring oceans, the future of food, disease and dilemmas and climate change. You will complete an individual investigation developing skills in planning, collecting and analysing information and have the opportunity to experience regional and international fieldwork projects.

How to apply for your apprenticeship You can register your interest in an apprenticeship through Middlesbrough College via the apprenticeship application form or apply for vacancies online. Apprenticeships are competitive so you will need to ace your application and prepare for your interview so you stand out from other applicants! What can I do next?

This course is designed for students who are interested in entering the construction sector as a painter and decorator. You will learn how to set out the work area and work in a safe manner producing work that meets industry standards. You will be shown how to hang a range of wallpapers as well as all other traditional aspects of painting and decorating. Entry requirements

You must have achieved four GCSEs at grades 9 -1 (A* - G) including maths, English and science. What can I do next?

You can progress to the Level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating or to employment through an apprenticeship programme.

This course will develop your technical skills in painting and decorating. You will understand how to estimate materials and price up jobs and learn how to be competitive within the industry. You will produce your own stencils to create a wall of decorative effects, and learn how to hang a range of wallpapers in domestic and commercial environments as well as other traditional aspects of painting and decorating. You must have achieved an appropriate Level 1 vocational qualification.

This course will develop your technical skills in painting and decorating. You will produce specialist decorative effects and install centre pieces, coving and hang specialist wall coverings as well as all other traditional aspects of painting and decorating. You will also develop your skills in technical drawing, airless and high volume low pressure spray systems, marble and wood grain effects. You must have achieved an appropriate Level 2 vocational qualification.

You can progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Painting and Decorating or to employment through an apprenticeship programme.

You can progress to full time employment, potentially through an apprenticeship if you have an employer. You could also continue your studies into higher education to progress onto a professional management role, or move onto another Level 3 construction trade course to widen your skill set.

Taking you higher with work experience Many of the courses and programmes on Foundation Learning and Life Skills require that all students participate in work experience to develop employability skills, confidence and self-esteem, which are required in the world of work. Employability skills are highly regarded and valued by employers and are an essential requirement for employment and voluntary work. Work experience will allow you the opportunity to develop your communication skills. You will also develop and build skills working as part of a team, problem solving, time management and motivational skills. Your tutor and placement coordinator will work with you to find a suitable placement and ensure reasonable adjustments are in place to help you build and develop employability skills in a vocational area to meet your needs. In some cases, 1:1 support can be offered so that you are able to achieve a work placement.

This course has been designed to address the needs of learners working at Entry Level 1 and Entry Level 2 in particular those with learning difficulties and disabilities. This qualification includes both independent learning skills and employability skills including running the College Vintage Shop. The qualification ensures that all students are given the same opportunities to access appropriate and relevant education and improve their life chances. It provides a foundation for lifelong learning focusing on transferable social and life skills which are essential for living and working in the community. A variety of creative activities and group excursions are included in the curriculum.

This course is for you if you wish to develop the skills needed to progress in supported employment but require high needs support to achieve this. You will build the skills essential for employment including developing a positive and flexible attitude, work readiness and clear communication skills. You will be given the opportunity to gain skills in areas such as CV writing, preparing for an interview, carrying out an interview before accessing long term supported internship in a live work setting. You will complete an extended work placement and attend College for two days per week to develop your English, maths and communication skills. Alternatively, if you check us out online www.mbro.ac.uk we have online application forms available for you to complete. Remember to get your application in to us as soon as possible as places are offered on a first come, first served basis and many courses fill up fast! Step 2: Interview Following your application, you’ll be contacted by our Admissions Team to arrange an interview. This is nothing to worry about, it is a good chance to visit the College and meet your prospective tutors. It allows us to get to know what your career goals are and helps us work out if your chosen course is right for you.

Step 3: Offer You will then be offered a place on your course. This will either be on completion of your interview or by letter. If you change your mind about your chosen course midway through the year just contact us and we will be able to get you onto your preferred course! Step 4: Enrolment Once you have received your GCSE results, you will be able to officially enrol onto a course in the late August ready to start your studies in September. Can’t decide on a course? Don’t worry! You can apply to multiple courses and make your final decision during enrolment.
