Transforming Our Future
Dear Morristown-Beard School Family and Friends, On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we are pleased to present the Morristown-Beard School Annual Report for the 2017-2018 fiscal year.
MI L L I ON
As we enter the fourth year of the School’s five-year historic campaign, Transforming Our Future, we are enormously proud of and grateful for the overThe Campaign for Morristown-Beard School whelming support we have received. Last September, we kicked off the beginning of the school year with a community-wide ribbon cutting to celebrate the opening of our fully-funded, $12.6 million Math & Science Facility. After two years of construction, it is very gratifying to see the students and faculty taking full advantage of this transformational state-of-the-art facility. The construction of this new Math & Science Facility goes hand in hand with the School’s strategic academic vision: to enhance learning of these two important disciplines, and equally important, to ensure that the 21st century skills described in our curricular philosophy are thriving in all areas of the School. We extend our utmost gratitude to all of those who contributed to this project and thank Betsy Patterson, Director of Institutional Advancement, and her Advancement Team for their extraordinary work on the campaign. In addition to the completion of the Math & Science Facility, progress on other capital projects included significant renovations and improvements to the Simon Athletic Center and Rooke Pool, and fundraising for the construction of a Center for Innovation and Design (CID). Connected to the Math & Science Facility, the $2 million CID will provide over 8,000 square feet of flexible and innovative space where students will design, build and problem solve as they engage in multidisciplinary projects. Record breaking support toward the Morristown-Beard Fund this past year—as well as gifts to scholarship and endowment—is testament to the generosity of the entire MBS community and to our collective belief in our School and its mission. We are immensely appreciative of every donor who helped us reach this tremendous milestone of the MB Fund exceeding $1 million for the seventh year in a row hitting an all-time record! We are so very fortunate that the MBS community is a supportive and inclusive one. Thank you for your participation and support in our shared efforts to provide our students and faculty with the very best environment and tools for learning, growth and unparalleled success. With gratitude,

The Campaign for Morristown-Beard School
The MBS community has much to be proud of ! Thanks to the generosity of many, our School's historic comprehensive campaign, Transforming Our Future, is in full swing. To date, this community-wide effort has fully funded the construction of the stunning $12.6 million Math & Science Facility that opened last fall. Wilkie Hall is now home to an extraordinary new teaching tool, and the Simon Athletic Center and Rooke Pool have undergone significant improvements. Continued support of the Morristown-Beard

Fund—as well as gifts to endowment and scholarship—positions us well to reach and exceed our overall campaign goal of $20 million by 2020. Thank you to all of you who have chosen to support this historic campaign to date. We invite you to read about our campaign progress and some exciting new initiatives that will propel Morristown-Beard School to the forefront of independent school education.
Center for Innovation & Design Located below the Dining Hall, the Center for Innovation & Design (CID) will be a cutting-edge facility that will inspire and support “Design Thinking”. Connected to the $12.6 million Math & Science Facility, the $2 million CID will provide over 8,000 square feet of flexible and innovative space where students will explore, experiment, collaborate, invent, design, build and problem solve as they deeply engage in multidisciplinary projects. The center will feature: ■ Collaboration Lab with Harkness Table and “Distance Learning” Capabilities ■ State-of-the-Art Computer Science Studio ■ Professional Sound and Film Studios ■ Engineering Design Studio ■ Makerspace Studio

The newly constructed facility contains student-friendly gathering and work spaces, as well as places for project-based teams to collaborate in both math and science including: ■ Eight science classrooms/
laboratories, prep rooms and independent research labs
■ Eight mathematics classrooms ■ An environmental science lab ■ A dynamic math studio
Math & Science Facility In September 2017, MBS proudly opened the doors to a 25,000 square foot state-ofthe-art Math & Science Facility, surpassing the goal of the $12.6 million cost thanks to the generosity of the MBS community. While this new facility promises to be transformational, its greatest impact will be on how it enriches the student experience.
Science On a Sphere® Last fall, Morristown-Beard School proudly introduced Science On a Sphere®, an extraordinary display system that uses computers and video projectors to display planetary data onto a six-foot diameter sphere, analogous to a giant animated globe. Researchers at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) developed Science On a Sphere® as an educational tool to help illustrate Earth System science to people of all ages. Animated images of atmospheric storms, climate change, and ocean temperature can be shown on the sphere, which is used to explain complex environmental processes in a way that is simultaneously intuitive and analytical. MBS and Liberty Science Center in Jersey City are the only two institutions in the state of New Jersey with Science On a Sphere®, and MBS is one of only two secondary schools in the nation to invest in this exceptional tool.
■ DNA lab ■ Art gallery ■ Small group study areas ■ Open common space for students
and faculty
Simon Athletic Center and Rooke Pool Thanks primarily to the generosity of an anonymous donor, significant renovations to the Simon Athletic Center and Rooke Pool have been made, including: ■ New roof and exterior paint ■ New ventilation system ■ New locker rooms ■ Conversion of chlorine pool water to saline ■ New pool deck ■ New training room ■ More efficient lighting

What the MB Fund Supports and its Impact Your gift to the MorristownBeard Fund provides unrestricted support for essential programs and other areas of greatest need, including: ■ Academic/Curriculum Development ■ Arts, Athletics, and Other Student Programming ■ Faculty Support ■ Student Leadership and Service Opportunities ■ Student Financial Assistance

2018 Annual Report.indd 4
The MB Fund exists for one reason only: to improve the MBS student experience. Every dollar donated supports the expansion of academic and curricular initiatives, arts and athletics programs, and student leadership and service opportunities. While special fundraising for capital projects, endowment, and scholarship bring significant long-term benefits to our School, the MB Fund’s consistent support of today’s student experience is vital to our students’ intellectual and emotional growth and our School’s financial health.
It is with great excitement and gratitude that MorristownBeard School announces that the 2017-2018 MorristownBeard Fund surpassed $1 million dollars in unrestricted giving for the 7th year in a row. This achievement is a testament to the generosity of the entire MBS community and to our collective belief in our School and its mission. We are immensely appreciative of every donor who helped us reach this tremendous milestone.

ENDOWMENT AND SCHOLARSHIP
MI L L I ON
The Campaign for Morristown-Beard School
Endowment The continual growth of an independent school’s endowment is vital to the longterm financial health of the institution. A robust, well-managed endowment enables independent schools like Morristown-Beard School to strengthen its future aspirations by providing increased support to both unrestricted and restricted needs. Infrastructure costs related to the academic experience (such as the rising investment in technology at MBS during the last decade) represent one of several ongoing, evolving priorities for investment income generated by the School’s endowment. Endowment income will continue to play a key role in helping MBS maintain tuition increases at a lower level than many regional and national peer schools through its support of general operating expenses.
Scholarship Another important priority for MBS remains scholarship support for students with demonstrated financial need. While annual investment income from the endowment does help limit tuition increases, the overall affordability of an independent school education continues to be a challenging question facing schools throughout the nation. Additional, related issues such as diversity and inclusion within the composition of the student body amplify the growing need for scholarship support.
MBS Scholar Partners Program The MBS Scholar Partners Program is an opportunity for members of the MBS community to provide mentorship as well as tuition assistance to support outstanding students from disadvantaged backgrounds in the Greater Morris County area. MBS is dedicated to creating opportunity for students who would not otherwise have access to an exceptional education. Help us empower and support our students by supporting this critical initiative.

Building a 21st Century Campus
As Chair of the Transforming Our Future Campaign’s Steering CommitThe Campaign for Morristown-Beard School tee, I am extremely proud and grateful to report on our continued progress to Capital Projects during 2017-2018. Exemplified by the ever-growing list of donors, the MBS community clearly understands the impact physical space can have on teaching and learning. From the completion of the Math & Science Facility to the renovations to the Simon Athletic Center and Rooke Pool, MBS continues to honor its unwavering commitment to its students and faculty to provide them with the very best environment for growth and success. With fundraising underway for the new Center for Innovation & Design, we continue to improve our 22-acre campus, enhancing both its beauty and functionality–made possible only with your help. We have made tremendous headway toward reaching our fundraising goals for this campaign, and we are extremely grateful to the donors in this comprehensive list for believing in our future. Their thoughtful and meaningful support will surely inspire others to follow in the years ahead. With gratitude,

MBS FACULTY & STAFF ACHIEVE HIGH PARTICIPATION RATE AGAIN! At Morristown-Beard School, our dedicated faculty and staff give back to the School in so many ways. In addition to the energy, enthusiasm and creativity that they bring to the subjects they teach, they also serve as mentors, coaches, advisors and friends. MBS teachers bring passion and creativity to the classroom and strive to make their subjects come alive for the students. They embrace new philosophies in pedagogy while being sensitive to encourage the individual strengths of each child. In addition to all of the above, more than 98% of MBS faculty and staff supported the MB Fund with a gift, showing not only their commitment to the School, but also their understanding of the importance of the MB Fund. MBS faculty and staff know that our mission is the same as that of the Fund—“to improve the MBS student experience.” Thank you Morristown-Beard School faculty and staff for once again going above and beyond in your service to our School as shown through your overwhelming support of the MB Fund! Your generosity is sincerely appreciated.

ALUMNI MEMORIAL & FLAG RAISING CEREMONY
John T. Dolan
The MBS Alumni Association began a new tradition at this year’s Reunion—an annual flag raising ceremony and moment of silence to honor the memories of all of the deceased alumnae and alumni from THe Beard School, Morristown School and Morristown-Beard School.
Denise Elliott
The idea for the ceremony came from Alumni Board Vice President, Amy Chaiken Wolffe ’78. Amy wanted to do something to make her 40th Reunion with her classmates even more significant. Reflecting on how the loss of her classmate C. Randolph Beard (Randy) a few years prior had deeply impacted her class, she thought that a flag raising ceremony would be a fitting tribute because Randy’s family had owned Annin Flag Company—the largest US flag manufacturer since 1847. A new flag featuring the symbols from the School crest was ordered for the tribute and unveiled for the first time to the public as it was raised on Senior Circle during Reunion.

Endowment and scholarship
SCHOOL ENDOWMENT AND SCHOLARSHIP ASSISTANCE MBS is very fortunate to have an incredibly generous community of parents, alumni, and friends who have made so many of our recent accomplishments possible. Throughout the year, I meet with many families and individuals who share a passion to improve the future of MBS, not only by supporting “brick and mortar” projects, but also by supporting the School’s endowment and scholarship assistance programs. Charitable giving to our School’s endowment provides significant long-term benefits to MBS. The continual source of investment income generated by a growing endowment enables the Headmaster and Board of Trustees to effectively plan and build for the future. Similarly, support for scholarship assistance programs yields a strong, lasting benefit—one that positively impacts bright, deserving students with demonstrated financial need. The names that appear in this section of the Annual Report represent the thoughtful donors who chose to support the MBS endowment and various scholarship assistance programs for students during the 2017-18 fiscal year. On behalf of Headmaster Caldwell and the Board of Trustees, I am happy to express the School’s gratitude for these gifts. With gratitude,

The Morristown-Beard School Alumni Board is comprised of a mix of dedicated volunteers representing The Beard School, Morristown School and Morristown-Beard School with members from every decade spanning the 1940’s to the 2000’s. This enthusiastic group works with the Office of Institutional Advancement to continually improve the alumni experience and enhance the MBS community overall. In addition to—Homecoming and Alumni Reunion—the Alumni Association hosted the Lehman Lecture, the Alumni Performing Arts Concert, the 4th Annual Alumni Career Panel for current MBS students, and the Crimson Connects networking event which featured Boll & Branch Founder and CEO, Scott Tannen ’95. Most notably, the Alumni Board once again achieved a 100% participation rate in the Morristown-Beard Fund. Alumni giving is vitally important to the growth of MBS, and the Alumni Board continues to encourage all alumni to support today’s students—our future alumni—with a gift to the MB Fund.

YOUNG ALUMNI This year, the MBS Alumni Association and the Office of Institutional Advancement worked together to continue strengthening young alumni engagement. The young alumni enjoyed a wide range of events in the 2017-2018 year and each had a significant increase in young alumni attendance from the previous year. The events included, The New York Yacht Club Cocktail Party, Homecoming, Alumni and Alumnae Ice Hockey Games at Twin Oaks Ice Rink, a Performing Arts Concert in Founders Hall, Crimson Connects networking night in NYC, and Y.A.R.P. (Young Alumni Reunion Party). This year also saw a huge improvement in the number of young alumni volunteers. Out of the 95 class agents in the class agent program, 26 of those graduated within the last 10 years. We also had numerous young alumni come back to MBS to speak to the current students as well as others who were profiled in the “Powerfully Prepared” section of the Crimson magazine.

Transforming Our Future
MI L L I ON
This year Alumni events were very well received and attended. Kicking off the year was Homecoming with the Kirby Mile drawing a spirited crowd of runners during halftime.
The Campaign for Morristown-Beard School
The spring calendar was full with a variety of alumni events. The launching of Crimson Connects at the New York Yacht Club in April was the first in a series of networking events. Entrepreneur Scott Tannen ’95, CEO and founder of Boll & Branch spoke to the intimate group about his small business successes. Rounding out the school year was the coveted Hall of Fame in May, followed by Reunion 2018 in June. Taz Brower ’47, Chair of the Athletic Hall of Fame committee, along with Joanne Dzama, Upper School Athletic Director, officially welcomed the 1989 & 1990 swim teams into the MBS Athletic Hall of Fame. A record number of alumni returned home to MBS for Reunion 2018 which included a full agenda of activities, tours, tributes, picnic, and the Headmaster’s Cocktail Party

THE MBS PARENTS ASSOCIATION In addition to enhancing the educational experience of all students at Morristown-Beard School, the Parents Association, with dedicated leadership and energetic volunteers, has proven to generate School spirit and a great sense of community year after year through various events and social gatherings. During 2017-2018, the Parents Association provided many opportunities for parent volunteers to engage with MBS and one another. These activities included the “Jeans and Jewels” Gala, Book Club meetings, Homecoming tailgate, Holiday Decorating, “Zip Code Night” Parent Social gatherings, Senior Fashion Show, Beef Steak Dinner, Golf Outing, and Faculty & Staff Appreciation Days just to name a few. As in previous years, several of these initiatives included fundraising for MBS, with this year’s proceeds supporting the Parents Association’s operating budget and scholarship. While most PA events were for community building, a few of the events organized by the Parents Association raised money. After covering the cost of the events and setting aside funds for their annual operating budget, the PA gifted the remaining money to scholarship. We are tremendously appreciative of the time, support and leadership of the MBS Parents Association during the 2017-2018 school year. Thank you! With gratitude,

Watching the seniors walk the runway, enjoying fabulous food, and taking a chance at the gift raffle put smiles on everyone's faces. The MBS community is grateful to co-chairs Bonnie Ryan and Lisa Sanderson who spent countless hours planning and preparing for this special event. A special thank you to Miriam Scully and Alex Picozzi for organizing and selecting the fashions, and to all of the volunteers who made the event such a success! We are so grateful for the donations from the many families and businesses that included clothing, photography, treats and contributions. By every account, the Senior Fashion Show Brunch was a truly successful event enjoyed by all.
