Talking Wine

The Aragón wine region lies in the northeast of Spain and prides itself on many UNESCO protected historical monuments and eye-catching architecture in uenced by its Moorish history.

The vineyards of Aragón region cover more than 4 billion square feet and the region is divided into two by the river Ebro. It has two mountain ranges, the Pyrenees, and the Iberian Range. The rich landscape and unique climate are ideal for grape growing. The region has four designations of origin, DO Cariñena, Calatayud, Somontano and Campo de Borja.

Whilst they all produce exceptional wines, DO Somontano is one of the most popular ones, created in 1984 with the main wine production centred in the town of Barbastro. The name “Somontano” – “beneath the mountain” de nes the geographic area which runs from the foothills of the Pyrenees down to the Ebro valley.

Originally the Aragón wine region produced bulk, entry level wines which in most cases were the result of wine cooperatives. In more recent years, modern wine making technology has allowed wineries to develop their skills and in turn develop quality wines with more complexity, balance, and nesse.
