s I write this, I am preparing for a ten day vacation, and my thoughts are very scattered. Getting the magazine to print, the house in order and suitcases packed is a lot to keep track of and I hope it all comes out ok. When I get back, the October issue will be here and the distribution will begin. Even more exciting is that September marked Rhode Island Natural Awakenings third year anniversary! I hope you will join us in celebrating on October 26 at Encore in North Providence. This month’s feature editorial Water, Water Everywhere…..is important reading. Like the many referenced in the article, I also felt water is not as important a limited natural resource as the fossil fuels we hear so much about. But it seems that once you factor in all that we have done to manipulate it, the picture changes. Some years ago, Bill and I spent a week in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. We laughed because every day was perfect – blue sky, no clouds. The fact is that it is a dessert peninsula, and only gets by some estimates between 10 – 12 inches of rain all year. There are many resorts, restaurants, and some beautiful flowers and landscapes in the area. These are all artificially created through the wonders of desalination of the water from the ocean, which seems to create more problems than it solves from the amount of energy it uses. When we dam rivers to redirect water to deserts like Las Vegas, or for farms to produce the ever growing demand for food, we also ignore water’s limits and undervalue nature. Oddly enough on a planet that is 2/3 covered in water it is not enough. The truth is there will soon be nine billion people all vying for the same water sources and at the rates we use it, there really isn’t enough. On the same water subject, it was good to read Catherine Guthrie’s Liquid Nutrition on page 28. According to Guthrie, we consume water in so many different ways; it does not just have to be water as we think it to be. While we need to be conscious of not dehydrating, we do not need to drink so much water we float away. As with everything, balance and moderation play a role in our health. I love my cats and I love that we have a pet health section in Natural Awakenings most months. On the subject of fluids and health, have a look at Urinary Health on page 26 to learn about keeping things flowing in your pets. I did notice something missing from this and wanted to share it with you. Last year, one of our cats was obviously not well. He wasn’t eating, was vomiting, was weak and seemed to be having litter box issues. Bringing him to the emergency vet on a Sunday night, we learned about Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD) with a Urethral Obstruction. With the help of the vet, we were able to clear the blockage. We are so grateful we caught it in time. As we understand it, this can be fairly common in cats (especially males) and could have been fatal. Keep an eye out for it. I wish you all a very happy Indian Summer and look forward to seeing you at Encore!
SUBSCRIPTIONS Subscriptions are available by sending $25 (for 12 issues) to the above address.

Facial Reflexology at Body-Wise Named Editor’s Choice
F
acial Reflexology at Body-Wise Therapeutics has been named Editor’s Choice for Whole Body Relief by Rhode Island Monthly in its annual Best of Rhode Island® list. Laura Clark of Body-Wise says the Facial Reflexology SorensensistemTM method is a new holistic complementary therapy that helps individuals look good and feel good. It integrates three ancient alternative healing therapies—Traditional Chinese Meridians and Points, Vietnamese Face Mapping and South American Mapuche Facial Reflex Zones—with modern neuro-anatomy. She adds that Facial Reflexology may be used to assist in the treatment of specific conditions, to maintain ones health, or purely for facial rejuvenation and deep relaxation. The therapy does not claim to cure, but does enhance and assist in the treatment and healing of many conditions including allergies, anxiety and stress, arthritic conditions, asthma, depression, digestive problem, fibromyalgia, hormonal imbalances, insomnia, infertility, hyperactivity, joint problems, muscular aches and pain, respiratory problems and more. “This treatment, combined with a neck and shoulder stone massage, creates the signature treatment at Body-Wise that is described in Rhode Island Monthly,” explains Clark. “The power of both treatments in one session is exponential healing for the body and mind.” Body-Wise Therapeutics is located at 575 East Main Road in Middletown. To schedule an appointment, call 401-848-9825. For more information, visit Body-WiseTherapeutics.com. See ad on page 25.

ngelnook Publishing, publisher of divinely inspired art, has announced the addition of Frantisek Strouhal as a featured artist to its new gallery in Cranston. Born in Brno, Czechoslovakia, from a family of painters and artists, Frantisek Strouhal’s interest in art has always been focused on the traditional and classical painters. He has since combined his love of the old with a passion for the new in becoming a master bromoil artist. He says his choices of brush, paper, texture and lithographic inks determine the quality of his images, and it takes hours to build up a depth of ink, layer by layer, to create the desired image. Angelnook Gallery is located at 1277 Cranston Street in Cranston. For more information or to find out details about showcasing your own art, call 401-932-8888 or visit AngelNookGallery.com. newsbriefs Light Soul Therapy is Expanding
L
ight Soul Therapy, owned by holistic adviser and energy worker, Jackie Van Dusen, is expanding and growing in many directions. Originally trained with Dr. Eric Pearl, facilitator of Reconnective Healing and The Reconnection, Van Dusen has been Jackie VanDusen offering both of the modalities for over five years. Now, she is expanding her services to include Self Master 101 classes, Healing for the Home, photography and art work for the Chakras. According to Van Dusen, one of the things the Self Mastery 101 series of classes does is “teach us techniques of breathing and grounding of our own energy so that as we discuss the events happening on the planet today, we can understand the necessity and the timing of these events without holding onto the fear and uncertainty that will present itself in physical disease or discomfort.” Light Soul Therapy Healing for the Home addresses the client’s lifestyle while creating a room or home that both energizes and soothes. Working with healing colors, fabrics and pieces of art, Van Dusen works closely with the client to achieve the personality and individual style that complements the home, the client and their energy fields. “It really does make a difference and sets the tone for a healthier way of inter-relatedness with oneself and others,” she states. Going in another creative direction, Light Soul Therapy has also moved into photography with the “Faces in Nature” series. She says the photos assist individuals in working with the part of the brain that allows us to see things outside of the box. “It’s kind of like I Spy for adults. Besides being a lot of fun, it’s also a wonderful conversational piece. These photos are meant to draw individuals in and make them focus, using their own creativity to discover the many spirits in nature that are all around us.” The last addition to the creative energy of Light Soul Therapy is Chakra Paintings. At present they are available at Angel Whispers R. I. in Warwick and Changing Lives in Johnston, as well as the Light Soul Therapy website. For more information, call 401-284-0363, email LightSoulTherapy@verizon.net or visit LightSoulTherapy.com See ad on page 14.

Local Yoga Studio Fights to End Hunger
I
n an effort to raise awareness about hunger, Prema Yoga is holding a yoga session for yogis of all ages on the Rhode Island Statehouse lawn at 10 a.m. on October 15. Participants are asked to bring in canned food items, which will be donated to local organizations—such as the Mary House Ministry and St. Patrick’s soup kitchen—that are working to end hunger. Prema Yoga owner, Molly Soum, has been advocating for those Rhode Island Statehouse less fortunate for over a decade and knows what it feels like to be hungry. Born in Cambodia, Soum witnessed genocide for four long years. From there, she lived in five different refugee camps in Thailand, and then came to America as a refugee. She has been involved in the community as an advocate for the Southeast Asian community and beyond since 1996. “I encourage people to open up their heart a little wider at this event,” says Soum. “I also encourage all yogis to think of yoga as one community and come together as a team working toward fighting hunger.” The Statehouse is located at 90 Smith Street in Providence. For information about Prema Yoga, visit sites.google.com/site/PremaYogaRI/.

The Providence Institute to Hold Fundraising Dinner Salon
O
n the evening of October 15, The Providence Institute for Contemplative Study and Natural Health (PI) will hold its first fundraising salon, “PI Meeting Of Minds,” an elegant, contemplative dinner discussion of the topics of meditation and healing. “We all have different connotations of the words mediation and healing that are evolving and complex—and so central to the work of The Providence Institute,” says founder and director, Sarah C. Whitehead. Three of PI’s practitioners will offer presentations including “Meditation: The Path of Becoming Fully Human” by Richard Sylvester; “Healing: From Darkness to Light” by Kimberly Testa; and “Meditation and Healing: Transcendence Is Not Enough” by Whitehead. Between presentations, guests will have a chance to engage in intimate, transformative, and enlightening discussion at their tables while enjoying delicious food and drink. PI offers a contemplative approach to healing and awakening that acknowledges the uniqueness of each individual path. A variety of programs are offered such as yogic practices, meditation, spiritual teaching, arts, energy work, and other mindfulness-based activities. Though PI is not a nonprofit, most services are offered on a sliding scale basis for the benefit of the whole community and can only be sustained through individuals’ support. Seating is limited. Tickets will be available via email invitation. To be included, visit TheProvidenceInstitute.org to be added to the email list. Sponsorship tickets ($100 and $250) are currently offered as well as the opportunity to donate in absentia via TheMeetingOfMinds.eventbrite.com. The Providence Institute is located at 18 Imperial Place in Providence’s Jewelry District. For more information, call 401-270-5443. See ad on page 17.

estrogen imbalance and weak connective tissues beneath the skin. Recognizing this cause of cellulite as a medical condition can help us to understand our body functions and treat them properly eliminating the problem. There are three major factors inducing cellulite formation:

Cellulite is the most esthetic complaint for women. A common misconception about cellulite is that one must be overweight to develop those dreaded dimples. But, that is simply not the case. Anyone can get it, because everyone has subcutaneous fat—the type of fat that sits under the skin. The lumpy appearance of the skin is caused by fat cells bulging upward; however, the primary reasons this problem occurs is because of a poorly functioning lymph drainage system,
Cellulite occurs when the waste removal process slows down and connective tissues become saturated with water and wastes. The area thickens, hardens and forms immovable pockets beneath the skin. The accumulation of toxic substances weakens the skin’s support structure; causing a loss of calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium.
Poor Circulation
Water, blood and lymphatic fluid constantly circulate through the cells, bringing oxygen and nutrients to the tissue and cleansing them from waste. When small blood vessels become fragile, they leak excess fluid that accumulates in the compartments between the fat chambers. This effect increases pressure within the tissues, resulting in poor lymphatic drainage. As excess fluid is retained in dermal tissues, fat globules cluster together and inhibit venous return. This vascular damage results in decreased collagen synthesis and an inability to repair tissue damage, which weakens the dermis. Increasing circulation may help by increasing lymph flow.

Treatment Strategies
In order to properly treat and prevent cellulite, we must improve circulatory and lymphatic systems and detoxify the body. This can be done with pressotherapy, an exclusive detoxifying treatment that helps to promote the body’s natural toxin clearing function through effective lymphatic drainage. Pressotherapy reduces water retention and helps the body remove toxins and waste products out of the peripheral tissues—including cellulite tissues—by boosting both blood circulation and lymphatic drainage. The body then naturally expels toxins, excess water and waste products. Pressotherapy also helps transport fat molecules from the cellulite tissues into the general circulation for oxidation in the muscles and other organs. Exercise also stimulates the cleansing process, but we are talking about the internal body. If the body is toxic, one will always have cellulite. However, that’s not to say that exercise does not play an important role in the reduction and prevention of cellulite. In fact, exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a healthy diet loaded with fruits and vegetables, and reducing stress are all essential and work together with medical devices and supplementation to make those dreaded dimples disappear.

and waste materials in the cells that the body is unable to eliminate. It occurs when lymph systems become sluggish and the dermis weakens. During a stage of hormonal imbalance estrogen increases the size of fat cells and produces water retention. Because the body does not naturally discharge toxins, they harden and store at the cellular level.

Traditionally, chiropractic care is known for focusing on postural adjustments to minimize abnormal stresses and strains that affect the function of the nervous system and act on joints and spinal tissues. The spinal cord operates like a switchboard for the body, transferring electrical impulses via a network of nerves. It works properly as long as there is no interference between the brain and tissue cells. But when nerve endings swell due to misaligned vertebrae, injury is more likely. Research reported in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine and The Physician and Sportsmedicine indicates that chiropractic sports science helps find and correct the underlying causes, and thus helps prevent and heal injuries. During one research project, Chung Ha Suh, Ph.D., and his team at the University of Colorado demonstrated that even, “minuscule amounts of pressure on a nerve root (equal to a feather falling on the hand), resulted in up to a 50 percent decrease in electrical transmission down the course of the nerve supplied by that root.” The resulting biomechanical misalignment causes a domino effect: It exerts abnormal pressure on the nerve root, causes interference in the brain’s impulses to tissue cells, and alters the performance of any muscles and organs that the nerve serves. Chiropractic Physician Jay Sweeney, owner of San Antonio Family Alternative Medicine, in Texas, uses functional neurology to “send a barrage of neurologically correct signals through the nervous system straight into the brain” in order to promote the balance, stability and coordination that enhance athletic performance and help prevent injuries. Dr. Nicole Galiette, owner of Chiropractic & Rehabilitation Center, in Cheshire, Connecticut, believes that her expertise as a marathon runner helps
to guard athlete clients from fatigue and stress that affect joints as a result of repetitive motions. “In any sport, there is a tendency to use one side, one joint or one movement more than others,” advises Galiette. For example, cyclists and runners’ repetitive stress injuries most often occur in the knees and back, while swimmers and baseball pitchers experience them in the shoulders. When Galiette treats cyclists that overwork their leg muscles and lean forward in an awkward spinal position for extended periods, she emphasizes strengthening exercises. “Injuries that heal properly are less susceptible to future flare-ups,” she notes. “Anyone that pushes their body hard needs to be in proper alignment, to keep the muscular system balanced,” Galiette asserts. “Strengthening the muscles around body mechanisms that are most frequently used means that the integrity of the surrounding structures won’t be compromised and cause other problems.”

WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE… But Will There Be Enough? by Sandra Postel
For at least three decades, Americans have talked about our uncertain energy future, but we’ve mostly ignored another worrisome crisis—water.
C
heap and seemingly abundant, water is so common that it’s hard to believe we could ever run out of it. Ever since the Apollo 8 astronauts photographed Earth from space in 1968, we’ve had the image of our home as a strikingly blue planet, a place of great water wealth. But of all the water on Earth, only about 2.5 percent is fresh—and two-thirds of that is locked up in glaciers and ice caps. Less than one hundredth of 1 percent of Earth’s water is fresh and available. Across the United States and around the world, we’re already reaching or overshooting the limits of Earth’s natural replenishment of fresh water through the hydrologic cycle. The Colorado and Rio Grande rivers are now so over-tapped that they discharge little or no water into the sea for months at a time. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the massive Ogallala Aquifer, which spans parts of eight states, from southern South Dakota to northwest Texas, and provides 30 percent of the groundwater used for irrigation in the country, is steadily being depleted. In much of the
22

world, we’re growing food and supplying water to communities by over-pumping groundwater. This creates a potential crisis in the food economy: We are meeting some of today’s food needs with tomorrow’s water.
The Changing Climate Equation
Due to climate change, we may no longer be able to count on familiar patterns of rain and snow and river flow to refill our urban reservoirs, irrigate our farms and power our dams. While farmers in the Midwest were recovering from the spring flood of 2008 (in some areas, the second “100-year flood” in 15 years), farmers in California and Texas allowed cropland to lie fallow and sent cattle to early slaughter to cope with the drought of 2009. In the Southeast, after 20 months of dryness, then-Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue stood outside the state capitol in November 2007 and led a prayer for rain. Two years later, he was pleading instead for federal aid, after intense rainfall near Atlanta caused mas-

sive flooding that claimed eight lives. This year again saw record regional precipitation, this time producing epic flooding in the Mississippi and Missouri river basins. Climate scientists warn of more extreme droughts and floods and changing precipitation patterns that will continue to make weather, storms and natural disasters more severe and less predictable. As a policy forum in the journal Science notes, the historical data and statistical tools used to plan billions of dollars worth of annual global investment in dams, flood control structures, diversion projects and other big pieces of water infrastructure are no longer reliable. Yet today’s decisions about using, allocating and managing water will determine the survival of most of the planet’s species, including our own.
Shifting Course
For most of modern history, water management has focused on bringing water under human control and transferring it to expanding cities, industries and farms via dams, large water-transfer projects and wells that tap underground aquifers. Major water programs have allowed cities like Phoenix and Las Vegas to thrive in the desert, the expansion of world food production, and rising living standards for hundreds of millions. But globally, they have worsened social inequities as tens of millions of poor people are dislocated from their homes to make way for dams and canals, while hundreds of millions in downstream communities lose the currents that sustain their livelihoods. Such approaches also ignore water’s limits and the value of healthy ecosystems. Today, many rivers flow like plumbing works, turned on and off like water from a faucet. Recently, he was honored with a Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators. “Superficially, I’d describe my work as realism,” says LoFaro. “However, much of what I’ve done in content is conceptual, with surreal flourishes.” Prior to 2002, he worked primarily with acrylics; now, he uses Photoshop to create digital art. LoFaro also treasures the rural beauty of his New Hampshire surroundings and confides, “My life revolves around walking out to my studio in the woods, listening to great music and being creative.”

review of more than 160 studies has established compelling evidence that happy people tend to live longer and experience better health than their unhappy peers. One study that followed nearly 5,000 university students for more than 40 years found those that were the most pessimistic as students tended to die first. An even longer-term study that tracked 180 Catholic nuns from early adulthood to old age revealed that those that wrote positive autobiographies in their early 20s tended to outlive the nuns that wrote more negative accounts of their young lives.

Urinary Health Illness Care and Prevention Tips by Dr. Matthew J. Heller
The urinary system is vital to any animal’s health, because it is responsible for removing waste products such as chemical byproducts, toxins and drugs from the bloodstream and eliminating them as urine. Other vital functions of the system include balancing the body’s pH, transforming vitamin D into an active form, and releasing hormones that aid in regulating blood pressure. Urinary tract disease may show up in several ways, including common bacterial infections easily treated with antibiotics, and bladder or kidney stones, which often require surgery. Just as in people, urinary tract disease causes pets pain and is dangerous if left untreated.
26

n Crying or whimpering when urinating n Cloudy or bloody urine with a strong odor n Tenderness in lower abdominal area during examination As always, providing the veterinarian with details as to changes in recent potty habits is helpful. Based on a detailed medical history, many veterinarians will proceed to diagnostic testing that usually begins with a basic urinalysis.
Urinary Tract Infections
Dogs and cats can suffer from diseases and disorders similar to those that can trouble their owners. Urinary tract disease is a common cause for concern for pets. Urinary System Primer
n Increased urination, sometimes in inappropriate areas, such as inside the home or outside the litter box
Many urinary diseases share similar symptoms, any of which should prompt a proper professional diagnosis: n Frequent straining to urinate, often with little success; if a pet likely has a full bladder and attempts to urinate but nothing passes, consult a veterinarian immediately
The most common cause of urinary tract disease is bacterial infection. For most urinary tract infections (UTI), an antibiotic regime will treat the present infection and lifestyle changes accompanied by veterinarianrecommended nutraceuticals may aid in preventing future problems. Certain underlying conditions may predispose a pet to infection, such as a weakened immune system or diabetes. Most canine UTIs are bacterial in origin and as a general rule, female dogs are more prone to experience them because the wider female urethra potentially allows more unwanted bacteria to enter. If bacteria then travels to the bladder and is left untreated, it may go on to contaminate the kidneys and other organs, presenting a serious health risk.
Bladder Stones
Bladder or kidney stones pose a more serious type of urinary disease, and either is of more concern for pets. In suspect situations, radiographic imaging such as X-rays or ultrasounds will help determine treatment. Small female dogs between the ages of 4 and 8 that have a history of bladder infections are the most vulnerable. While stones are less common in male dogs, it can pose a critical care
RINaturalAwakenings.com
situation if stones pass from the bladder into the male’s narrow urethra, where the obstruction prevents the pet from urinating. Stones can also affect feline friends and similar life-threatening situations can occur if urine is unable to pass. Generally, stones form in concentrated urine, so the less hydrated a pet, the greater the risk that a stone may form. Stones are formed by microscopic mineral crystals strained out of urine that band together to create a larger stone. There are various types of stones and correct identification will determine treatment options.
Prevention Tips
Increase water consumption. Home cooking is a wonderful option for ensuring a pet is receiving ample moisture-rich foods; most recipes include fluid-rich meats and veggies. Offering high quality, premium canned food is good, too. For pets that routinely chow down on dry commercial foods, moisten rations with salt-free broth. Also, add a tiny pinch of unrefined sea salt to their water bowl; using distilled water is advised for pets with a history of stones. Use supplements. Capsules of d-Mannose cranberry extract combine a powerful natural diuretic with the antibacterial benefits of cranberries. The more often a pet urinates, the less likely the urine will become concentrated in the bladder. Consider probiotics. Probiotics contain beneficial bacteria that establish a healthy flora in the digestive tract; a strong gut can fight off infectious bacterial challenges. Monitor pH. Owners can purchase pH strips to test a pet’s first daily urine at home. Changes in a pet’s pH may indicate a urinary issue and that veterinary care is advisable.

LIQUID NUTRITION Water Myths and Truths by Catherine Guthrie
MYTH: Caffeinated beverages zap the body’s water reserves.
Water is good for both body and soul, but you don’t need to drink as much as you might think. Here’s the truth about what’s sufficient, plus five other myths about water.
F
or the past 50 years, nutritionists and other health experts have been exhorting Americans to drink more water. If the ubiquity of water bottles is anything to go by, the message has been received loud and clear. But now, updated research lets us off the hook. It turns out that much of the water craze springs from a deep well of misinformation. Our experts debunk some of the most popular water myths. MYTH: You need eight, eight-ounce glasses of water a day to be healthy. TRUTH: The familiar eight-by-eight rule is likely based on misinterpretation, rather than scientific certainty, says Dr. Heinz Valtin, a kidney specialist, textbook author and retired professor at Dartmouth Medical School, in Hanover, New Hampshire. Valtin traces the prescription to a 1945 recommendation by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council to take in, “1 milliliter for each calorie of food.”
28
Rhode Island Edition
In a study published in the American Journal of Physiology in 2002, Valtin explains that most of that allotment already comes from the foods we eat. He not only discredits the need for most people to consume this “mythical” amount of water every day, but writes that the recommendation is potentially harmful, by making people feel guilty for not drinking enough. “The consumer ended up thinking only plain water counts,” says Ann Grandjean, Ph.D., a hydration researcher and medical nutritionist with the University of Nebraska Medical Center, in Omaha. But almost all liquids—including tea, coffee and beer—count toward the daily water intake, she says. So, how much should you be drinking? Researchers at the National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine, after reviewing more than 400 studies, including Valtin’s, set the general daily intake for women and men at about 91 and 125 ounces, respectively. The average American receives 20 percent of this daily water intake from food. The remaining 80 percent comes from all beverages—not just water.
TRUTH: Grandjean first became interested in the reputed link between dehydration and caffeine while working as a consultant to the United States Olympic Committee. “I worked with elite athletes, and I noticed they drank a lot of caffeinated beverages without showing any sign of dehydration,” she says. In 2000, she published a study in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition showing that the body doesn’t discriminate between regular and decaf beverages when it comes to hydration. MYTH: If you’re thirsty, you’re already dehydrated. TRUTH: While thirst is an accurate barometer of when to imbibe, the notion that thirst signals a dehydrated body is not true, says Valtin. Thirst is triggered when the blood’s concentration of solid particles rises by 2 percent. Dehydration occurs when the blood concentration rises by 5 percent. So, thirst sets in before dehydration and people who shrug off their thirst can find themselves on the path to dehydration. “Thirst is the first indicator of the body’s need for water,” cautions Dee Sandquist, a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association. Signs to watch out for include headache, dry mouth, rapid pulse and lightheadedness. MYTH: Urine should be clear. TRUTH: Perpetually clear urine can actually be a sign of
RINaturalAwakenings.com
drinking too much water, which can dilute the body’s electrolytes, according to Grandjean. “Healthy urine should have some color,” she counsels. Certain vitamins, such as riboflavin (B2), can darken urine.

Your Bridge to Health SINCE 1985
MYTH: Drinking a lot of water suppresses the appetite. TRUTH: While being adequately hydrated helps the metabolism run at its optimal level, drinking vast quantities of water won’t affect the overall amount of food you eat. Because water quickly empties from the stomach, drinking water has little effect on appetite, says Barbara Rolls, director of the Laboratory for the Study of Human Ingestive Behavior, at Pennsylvania State University. Eating foods that have a high water content, such as fruits, vegetables, soups and grains, can help us to feel sated.

MYTH: Bottled water is always better than tap water. TRUTH: Not necessarily. Be aware that bottled water is often just tap water. A Natural Resources Defense Council report cites government and industry findings that 25 percent of bottled water is plain tap water; sometimes treated, sometimes not. NSF International certification indicates brands that meet federal safety standards. Catherine Guthrie is an award-winning health and lifestyles journalist in Bloomington, IN. Here, craftsmen and artisans will showcase studio and custom furniture along with home décor and accessories. New products will be debuted, best in show awards will be handed out, and patrons will have the opportunity to get to know the people that are so dedicated to their craft.

traditional craftsmanship to make handmade chairs, stools, corn brooms, wooden hayforks and other country crafts that remind us of a simpler time—a time when family and neighbors worked side by side. His method of green woodworking (using green, or unseasoned, wood) is a time-honored tradition that has been handed down from generation to generation for centuries. Today, green woodworkers help to preserve these old craft traditions by using the tools and techniques of the past. They split green wood straight from the log, shape the material with hand tools, and join it together using age-old skills. However, in our fast-paced world of technology, it’s a method that is becoming more and more scarce. Nassise is determined to do something about that. Completely dedicated to his craft, he takes the time to demonstrate his time-honored skills and techniques at historical societies, living history museums and events throughout New England in an effort to both educate and entertain. He also teaches workshop classes in hand tool craftsmanship. “Teachers, who share their knowledge of old tools and hand craftsmanship help to preserve these traditions, reconnecting us to the past and to each other,” he says. What some would see as a broken, diseased tree, Nassise sees as furniture. It is what a friend of his coined as “treecycling.” He creates something beautiful out of what many of us would deem unusable. He uses locally sourced green timber and often gets logs from local tree services to get the materials for his chairs. He says he only uses native hardwoods, such as oak, ash and hickory, and splits the logs using a sledgehammer and wedges. Some of the wood is dried in a homemade kiln, and he is quick to point out that no metal screws or fasteners are used. The process of going from a felled tree to furniture is about a week. Nassise, whose grandfather was a furniture maker, left a career in publishing to pursue his passion for
woodworking. It sounds like he has no regrets. “There is something about handmade crafts that connects us to the past, and enhances the beauty and meaningfulness of our everyday lives,” he states. This marks the first time Nassise will show and sell his work at the Providence Fine Furnishings and Fine Craft Show. But, he is not the only newbie. In fact, he is one of over 25 alumni of the North Bennet Street School in Boston coming to the show for the first time.

yoga and pilates FORREST YOGA Forrest Yoga is a method developed by yoga teacher, Ana Forrest. Known for her acrobatic, dance-like yoga demonstrations, Forrest drew upon her personal history of abuse, epilepsy, alcoholism, and bulimia to create an intensely physical vinyasa-style practice that aims to heal psychic wounds. Forrest incorporates elements of Native American healing, encouraging students to go deep within and to use their yoga practice as therapy. Forrest Yoga helps us connect to our core—getting strong and centered. It uses heat, deep breathing and vigorous sequences to sweat out toxins. The long holds in the pose progressions help individuals flush, oxygenate and rejuvenate every cell. As beginners of Forrest Yoga, students learn to breathe deeply and connect in feeling with their body. As they progress, they get proficient at safely tailoring each pose to work best for them, particularly with physical and emotional injuries. Forrest Yoga can help students cultivate an acute awareness of their own practice and life process, creating a unique and powerful opportunity for them to make practical life decisions based on their own experiences. Forrest Yoga teaches students to focus their intent on connecting to and embodying their Spirit by choosing, in the moment, to breathe in a way that brightens and to do poses in a way that invite their Spirit to permeate into all of their body. It is an inspiring practice that builds flexibility, intelligence and strength while helping deepen the relationship with our authentic self.

Southside Community Land Trust, now celebrating its 30th year, provides access to land, education and other resources so people in Greater Providence can grow food in environmentally sustainable ways and create community food systems where locally produced, affordable, and healthy food is available to all. Its urban agriculture programs touch the lives of thousands of Rhode Island residents through community gardens, urban farms, youth and adult education and community events. All three Rhode Island Whole Foods Market locations will donate 5% of the day’s net sales on October 11 to support the mission of Southside Community Land Trust.
