h, what a winter it has been. As I sit here writing this, it is snowing yet again. I do enjoy my snow days, they can be cozy, as long as I don’t have to leave the house anyway, but I feel for those that do. I also feel for those whose lives are disrupted by all the school cancelations, clients rescheduling and the general mess the weather can leave in its wake. I generally enjoy the winter, and don’t mind some snow but this has gotten a little ridiculous. Seems every time I look at my phone there is yet another winter weather advisory. And it hasn’t just been the snow! I heard someone the other day refer to the temperature, at 27 degrees, as “not that cold”. Brrrr! The good news is that the days are getting longer, spring will be here soon and this will all be a distant memory. This month’s magazine is about food, from the fresh, local food trends to food sensitivities. We take a look at the impact this life-sustaining ingredient has on so between what I ate and how I felt, it was truly life changing. I only wish I had done many things different. I am so grateful she is doing such a better job raising my grandchildren with organic foods and natural alternatives, and that she turned out okay despite my ignorance! I strongly recommend reading ”Seven Signs of Food Sensitivities” on page 26. Many common ailments children have can be connected to what they are eating. have a different, and not always obvious, reaction. Our world is changing with chemicals to make them something they are not. A recent article I read said the military is developing a pizza that has a three year shelf life. Yikes! Much like the fuel we put in our cars, the quality of the food we put in our mouths impacts how we run. Think about it. As spring comes ever closer, keep an eye on our calendar listings. There are lots of ways you can get closer to nature and closer to your true you too. Like a lion, March roars in.

Support GMO Labeling and ‘The Right To Know’ in Rhode Island

T

wo GMO labeling bills--H7042 and H7093—have been introduced for Rhode Island’s 2014 legislative session.

engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses or other plants and animals. These experimental genes from different species cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding. While the large corporations that produce GMOs claim they are a better solution to feeding a hungry planet, a growing body of evidence connects GMOs with health problems, environmental damage and violation of farmers’ and consumers’ rights. A group of Rhode Islanders has formed a grass roots coalition to prompt constituents to contact their district representatives and senators and ask them to support this important legislation. The coalition is looking for help with this in all districts. Details of the bill, further information about GMOs and legislators’ contact information is available on the coalition website (RightToKnowRI.org). Supporters can stay informed through the Rhode Island Right to Know Facebook page or Twitter @RIRightToKnow.

The Body as the Doorway

A

s a spiritual companion, Dream-

yoga therapist, Karen Moore Holliday focuses on building the capacity to listen, translate and move or shift energy patterns. Gaining mastery of our energetic patterns and experiences moves us to the very core of who and what we are—our own unique energetic signature for this lifetime. Whether Karen Moore Holliday working with individuals, in groups or through the courses, the central theme in whatever she teaches is energy, with the body as the messenger and energy as the language. “Everything is energy,” she says. “We are energy beings vibrating through this physical body. We are having energy experiences all of the time. We experience them through the body, then frame and name them through our own ‘lifeilluminating, depending on how we track and translate our energetic experiences. We come into this life with our own unique energetic signature. Our responsibility then is to uncover, sort out and discover who and what that is.” Holliday offers individual sessions in Little Compton, Rhode Island, as well as classes and course offerings in Westport, Massachusetts at the Sisters of Solace Holistic Center. The Beauty-Food Connection

Cleansing for Beauty by Anna Golub

“In order to become younger, many of one’s habits must be changed.” —Dr. Normal Walker The connection between food and beauty is extremely powerful. With some simple changes, we can completely change the way we look and feel. We all know that beauty is the body is a beautiful body, and our skin functions like a mirror of internal organs and systems. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, our intestines are key to how we look and feel. It’s no secret that bumpy skin, dull and dry complexion, cystic acne and rashes, as well as deep lines, are a straight indication of sluggish digestion, clogged lymphatic system and inner toxicity from improper food and environmental damages. For example, breakouts on the jaw/chin and deep nasolabial lines indicate colon congestion and overloaded liver. Food is a medicinal and a powerful tool for achieving healthy, vibrant beauty. Proper food and knowledge of how to pair foods are the fundamental principles of optimal health and a clean body without obsessive calorie counting and restricted diets. The skin will become radiant and glowing from balancing the diet through overall internal cleansing. It’s simple: if we can learn how to eat the right food in the right way, we would consistently cleanse our bodies and absorb all the necessary nutrients, resulting in high, long-lasting energy. It is not about how much we eat, but how many nutrients our body is able to absorb. By making this a lifestyle, instead

of a short-term resolution, we can look years younger. Aging is a natural process, but it’s possible to look beautiful even in our late 60s if we all understand the real cause of aging. Internal toxic waste from unhealthy, processed foods, preservatives, medications and pesticides starts to build the sludge in the body that hardens over time, depleting the absorption of essential nutrients. Vitamins, minerals and other nutrients changing our appearance, improving the skin color and texture and reducing Healing pioneer Arnold Ehret, Ph.D. says, “The body must be cleansed, freed from waste and foreign matter, from mucus and toxemias accumulated since childhood.” While struggling with calorie counting and portion sizes, we still feel hungry because our bodies do not fully absorb the nutrients and fully metabolize the food since tiny villi that are responsible for nutrient absorption are too clogged by the waste products— foods, as well as excessive yeasts and fungus. With the exception of an energy when our villi are clogged. However, what we don’t realize is that our body is starved of minerals, vitamins, and protein. It is also important to note that frequent bowel movements are not nec-

RINaturalAwakenings.com

Follow these basic rules for a beauty detox. Start the day with a full glass of lemon and honey water to eliminate the old sludge and increase the energy. Begin each meal with alkaline foods, such as fruit, raw vegetables and salads. Fruits should be eaten only on an empty stomach. Fruits are the most beautifying, purifying and cleansing food on a planet. Fresh, organic, nourishing produce promotes a strong, beautiful body. Eating light to heavy through the days promotes the beauty energy and stabilizes weight loss. Eat animal protein no more than two to three times a week and try to increase your consumption of plantbased protein. Build bones, skin and muscles from plant protein, taking an example from the largest, most muscular animals like gorillas, horses and cows that are only vegetarians. Completely avoid acidic, clogging and mucus-producing dairy products that deplete our beauty and calcium needs with plant foods, such as dark greens and vegetables. Starting with small changes in our diets and cleansing our bodies naturally, we can achieve the highest level of health and beauty, making a huge difference in our appearance. The skin will be more radiant and glowing, our hair shinier and thicker, eyes will be brighter and energy levels will increase—creating a truly younger version of us. Although coconut oil is a saturated fat, its chemical composition appears to prevent it to a growing body of research. In an earlier study published in Lipids, women who exhibited abdominal obesity consumed supplements of either coconut oil or soybean oil. Throughout the 12-week trial, both groups followed the same weight-loss diet. At the end, the coconut oil group presented a higher level of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or protective cholesterol, and smaller waistlines, while the soybean oil group showed lower HDL levels and an increase in total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein

Researchers who conducted a concurrent pilot study with male and female subjects found that men also experienced shrinking waistlines when supplementing with coconut oil. They explain that coconut oil contains mainly medium-chain fatty acids, which rapidly convert into energy, thereby circumventing the cycle that makes cholesterol and stores fat (Pharmacology).

Suspects: Intolerance to casein—a protein prevalent in dairy cow milk different from its form in breast milk that can get into mothers’ milk or formula— tends to irritate an infant’s gut lining, (GERD) and then chronic ear infections or constipation, says Dorfman. Action: Remove dairy from the baby’s and nursing mom’s diet for at least a week. For formula feeding, choose a brand made with predigested casein or whey. To heal baby’s damaged intestinal lining, give 10 billion CFU (colony forming units) daily of probiotic bacteria, mixed in a bottle or sprinkled on food.

Chronic Diarrhea

Suspects: Intolerance to gluten (a protein in wheat and other grains) or lactose (dairy sugar). Diarrhea, the gastrointestinal tract’s way of eliminating problematic substances, plus gas and bloating, often accompany these intolerances. Lactose intolerance is usually a root cause and is present in nearly everyone that’s gluten intolerant, Dorfman says.

Chronic Ear Infections

Suspects: Dairy intolerance and for many, soy sensitivity. Some research has shown that 90 percent of kids with have food reactions, corroborated by Dorfman’s patients. Action: Quit dairy and soy for several months to verify a correlation. From paw paws and persimmons in Missouri to palmetto berries in Florida and seaweed in California, Mother Nature provides a feast at her children’s feet. Commonly foraged foods include nuts,

mushrooms, greens, herbs, fruits and regional native wild foods and cash in on some “free” nutritious meals, foragers need to know where and when to harvest their bounty. Conservation departments and state and national parks often Jill Nussinow, also known as The Veggie Queen, a registered dietitian and cookbook author in Santa Rosa, California, characterizes foraging as “nature’s treasure hunt.” Nussinow says she forages for the thrill of it and because, “It puts you very much in touch with the seasons.” On her typical foraging excursions through forests and on beaches, Nussinow notes, “You never know what you lettuce, mustard pods or sea vegetables. It’s free food, there for the picking.” However, she warns, “You have to know what you are doing. Some wild foods can be harmful.”

For example, Nussinow advises getting to know about mushrooms before venturing forth to pick them. She recommends the book Mushrooms Demysti, by David Arora, as a learning tool, and checking with local mycological cation. She also likes the advice of “Wildman” Steve Brill, of New York City, who publishes educational articles at Wildman SteveBrill.com. “He knows more about wild foods than anyone I know,” she says. Vermont wildcrafter Nova Kim teaches her students not only how to identify wild edibles, but also how to harvest them sustainably. It’s critical to make sure wild foods will be available for future generations.

He explains how microorganisms, such as lactic acid bacteria that are universally present on raw vegetables and in milk, transform fresh food into preserved sustenance. Feed Matters

The popular adage, “We are what we eat,” applies to animals, as well. New research from Washington State University shows that organic whole milk from pasture-fed cows contains 62 percent higher levels of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids compared to conventional, or non-organic, whole milk. The striking difference is accounted for by the fact that the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s national organic program legally requires that organic cows have access to pasture throughout the grazing season. The more time cows spend on highquality pasture, which includes grass, lefats will be in their milk. On the other hand, when ruminant animals, designed to graze on pasture, are fed a steady diet of corn and soy, both their milk and According to Captain Joseph Hibbeln, a lipid biochemist and physician at the National Institutes of Health, in omega-3 fatty acids over the past 100 years, largely because of industrial agriculture. For example, George sees it as contrary to human dignity to cause poses gestation crates and the push for cheap food that exploits animals and the environment in the process. Kelly Moltzen, a registered dietitian in Bronx, New York, shares a passion for addressing food justice and sustainability from her faith-based perspective of Franciscan spirituality. She believes that, “When we connect our spirituality with the daily act of eating, we can eat in a way that leads to a right relationship with our Creator.” By bridging spirituality with nutrition and the food system, Moltzen hopes to raise awareness of how people can care for their body as a temple and live in right relationship with the Earth, which she perceives as “the larger house of God.” Fred Bahnson, director of the Food, Faith and Religious Leadership Initiative at Wake Forest University’s School of Divinity, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is the author of Soil and Sacrament: A Spiritual Memoir of Food and Faith. His book takes the reader on a journey to four different faith communities— Catholic, Protestant, Pentecostal and Jewish—to explore connections between spiritual nourishment and the cultivation of food. Bahnson speaks about sacred soil and the communities of mystical microorganisms that lie within and create the foundation for sustenance. He also describes the special power of communal gardens, which welcome all and provide nourishing food, yet come to satisfy more than physical hunger. Regardless of religious denomination, Amanda Archibald, a registered dietitian in Boulder, Colorado, believes, “We are in a new era of food—one that embraces and honors food producers and food systems that respect soil, environment and humanity itself.” Melinda Hemmelgarn, aka the “food sleuth”, is a registered dietitian and award-winning writer and radio host at KOPN.org, in Columbia, MO (FoodSleuth@gmail.com). re you or someone you love suffering from digestive disorders? Bloating, gas, abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea? Have more serious disorders been ruled out by colonoscopy, endoscopy or by a medical doctor? Still feeling sick? Are you losing hope? Don’t give up! Though the reasons for such disorders can vary greatly, there are solutions. Chronic digestive issues can be the result of parasites, food sensitivities, Parasites are real. Although most are microscopic, they can cause many digestive and health issues. Symptoms of parasite infestation may be: bloating, gas, pain in the navel, anal itching, mucus in stools, itching in ears, cramps and loose stools. How are we exposed to parasites? Through undercooked food, cross contamination, pets, water and poor hygiene of those preparing our food. Many herbal formulas are available to combat parasites, but it can take months to rid the body of the organisms. Professional supervision is key to safety. Food sensitivities are also the cause of many health issues, including digescomplaints from friends or family saying, “When I eat oranges I get diarrhea,” or “My joints ache after eating tomatoes.” Natural phenolics, or phenols, in healthy foods—such as apples, oranges, tomatoes, plums, prunes, cucumbers and more—can often be the culprit. SOUND MEDICINE:

Food for the Soul by Joy Quinn Blum

I

n recent times, we have begun to rediscover how important sound vibration and harmonics, including music, are in maintaining and improving our physical and mental health. The term “rediscover” is used because the ancients knew well how important the balance and harmony of our body/mind/spirit is to our health and well-being. Modern science now supports the ancient belief that all matter emanates from vibration or sound. Quantum physics has shown that up of vibrating energy. When that energy is out of balance in a person, animal or plant, a blockage or dis-ease may be created. Just as everyone needs good food to nourish and renew the physical body, we all need the beauty of sound and vibration to nourish and nurture our souls. Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, a prominent oncologist in New York City, advocates the use of sound and music with metal singings bowls and crystal bowls as a vital complement to his cancer treatment protocols for all his patients, and strongly suggests that each patient buy him/herself a singing bowl to use in meditation each day. “If we accept that sound is vibration and we know that vibration touches every part of our physical being, then we understand that sound is heard not only through our ears but through every cell in our bodies,” says Gaynor. “One reason sound heals on a physical level is because it so deeply touches and transforms us on the emotional and spiritual planes. Sound can redress imbalances on every level of physiologic functioning and can play a positive role in the treatment of virtually any medical disorder.” Sound has been used for thousands of years to access deep states of consciousness, expand awareness and help create healing. Also known as vibrational medicine, the practice employs the vibrations of the human voice, as well as objects

that create resonance—tuning forks, gongs, Tibetan singing bowls, crystal bowls—to go beyond relaxation and stimulate healing. The ancients knew that the healing power of sound could gently restore and harmonize the body, mind and spirit. The existence of the gong dates back to the Bronze Age, around 3500 B.C. Myth has it that sacred gongs included pieces of meteorites that fell from the heavens. The gong’s ancient use was as an initiation tool for enlightenment, etheric projection and exorcism of negative spirits. It has also been used for centuries by Tibetan monks and the Chinese in their temples as an aid to meditation. In recent decades people have relaxed and meditated to soothing sounds, including recordings of waves lapping, desktop waterfalls and wind chimes. In the past few years, the whole concept of sound therapy has begun to take hold among those searching for increased enlightenment, relief of pain, decreased muscle tension, lowering of blood pressure, increased immunity to disease and overall relaxation. The latest brain research teaches us to understand the role sound plays in our lives for good or ill, and the means by which we can have sound health. In a gong bath meditation, people can choose to either idea is to get into a state of complete relaxation so that the vibrational tones of the gongs and Tibetan singing bowls can wash over and through one and release any blockages in the meridian and nerve pathways. “Gong therapy is bathing in total sound,” explains Gongmaster Don Conreaux. “In other words, the sound erases all other sounds around you and you are just in this ocean of rolling waves and layers and layers of tones. And the tones go right through the body. They affect you on a mental level, an emotional level, a spiritual level and they cleanse you as or cares, and often any obstacles that stand in your way of clarity and creativity. We call it the Music of Wholeness.” Gong therapy can be done one-on-one with a practitioner or in a group situation. People who come to gong bath meditations often say they like it because it is noninvasive and relaxing. Some fall asleep while others fall into a deep state of relaxation in which they lose awareness of the body and connect with their deep inner selves. After the gong meditations, most of the gong-bathers report feeling relaxed, renewed, energized, released from physical and emotional pain and enjoying a feeling of well-being. This energy and relaxation can often last for days. Joy Quinn Blum (Gongs of Joy) and her sound therapy partner A.Michelle (Drumsong) play the gongs, Tibetan and ing instruments at various yoga studios, health centers, and churches in the RI and nearby MA areas. cup of beans a day may keep the doctor away. In a randomized trial published in the Archives of Internal Medicine of 121 participants diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, daily consumption of approximately one cup of legumes (peas and beans) was found to improve glycemic control and reduce systolic blood pressure and heart rate, thereby reducing participants’ calculated risk score for coronary heart disease (CHD). Body weight, waist circumference and fasting blood glucose and triglyceride levels also decreased on the legume diet. Legumes appear to make dietary carbohydrates digest more slowly and with a lower glycemic index, which has been associated with reduced hypertension and fewer CHD events in pre-diabetic individuals.

GLUTEN-FREE

ON THE GO Safe Eating Away from Home by Judith Fertig

lthough following a diet without gluten has become easier due to increased availability and labeling of gluten-free foods, we still need to know how to make sure which foods strictly qualify. We always have more control in our own kitchen, yet we’re not always eating at home. Natural Awakenings asked experts to comment on reasons for the demand and offer practical tips and tactics for healthy eating on the go. According to the Center for Celiac Research & Treatment, 18 million Americans are now gluten sensitive, 3 million more suffer from celiac disease, and the numbers continue to skyrocket, says Dr. David Perlmutter, a neurologist and author of Grain Brain. Gluten, a naturally occurring protein in wheat, barley and rye, is prevalent in the modern American diet. Perlmutter points to new wheat hybrids and increasing amounts of gluten in processed foods as exacerbating the problem. He particularly cites today’s overuse of antibiotics as contributors to “inappropriate and excessive reactions to what might otherwise have represented a non-threatening protein like gluten.”

I keep a variety of these bars in my purse and car year-round, so I’m never bored with my choices.”

You Can Take It with You by Judith Fertig Our experts suggest delicious, nutritious choices for gluten-free eating at work, play or anywhere we wander. For food safety, keep foods that need to be kept hot and cold in separate thermal containers. Asian stir-fry with rice Baked egg frittata or baked Baked falafel Baked polenta “fries” Baked sweet potato chips oatmeal, unsweetened Cheese on rice crackers with olive tapenade (purée) Fresh fruits Fresh salads, dressing on the side Gluten-free granola or granola bars Nori (seaweed) wraps Precooked quinoa with dried fruit and rice milk Raw vegetables with hummus Sandwiches made with whole-grain, gluten-free bread Stew, gumbo or vegetable sautés packed with cooked rice on top Vegetable soups with beans or rice Vietnamese pho (soup) with rice stick noodles

“Gluten-free instant oatmeal is a staple in my life,” advises Shepard. She never leaves home without it, regardless of the length of the trip. “All you need is a cup or a bowl and some boiling free oats, because regular oats can be contaminated with gluten grains.” Shepard also recommends avoiding pre-sweetened varieties. Kate Chan, a teacher and mother of two in suburban Seattle, Washington, who has been following a gluten-free diet since 2000, has solved the problem of eating healthy at work another way: The family cooks extra the night before. “While cleaning up the kitchen, I just pack the leftovers for lunch. I like to vary the side dishes a bit if I pack side dishes at all, and toss in fruit and more vegetables,” she says. Chan likes to use a bento-style lunch box with several compartments, plus thermal containers, so she can enjoy a variety of gluten-free lunch options.

On the Road In Los Angeles, California, Kristine Kidd, former food editor at Bon Appétit, has

recently returned to gluten-free eating. On her menu-planning and recipe blog, KristineKidd.com, and in her cookbook, Weeknight Gluten Free, she recommends whole, fresh foods from farmers’ markets that are naturally gluten-free. When she and her husband hike the Sierra Mountains, she carries homeeat on the way up and packs gluten-free soups such as butternut squash and ings, and fruit for a delicious lunch upon reaching the peak. Some gluten-free snacks can contain as many empty calories as other types of junk food, notes Registered Dietitian Katharine Tallmadge. “Many ‘gluten-free’ products are made with which contain plenty of calories, but few vitamins or minerals.” She agrees with Kidd and others that choosing whole, natural, fresh foods, which are naturally gluten-free, makes for healthy eating wherever we go. My family has a history of both major and minor thyroid issues and using the Detoxified Iodine has helped my general fatigue and mood. Thank you for a great product! ~ Patricia I’ve known for years that I was low on Iodine, that it is essential to good thyroid function, and proper thyroid function is critical to so many bodily functions. This product makes it so easy for me to ensure I have optimum Iodine levels in order to maintain good health. umans are inherently social creatures. Most of us enjoy the company of others and spend much of our waking time engaging in social interactions with colleagues, friends and family. People that spend a lot of time together often adopt one another’s eating and exercise habits—sometimes for the better, but often for the worse. At least one positive side to wishing to conform socially is unexpected. Finding the right circle of friends—our own personal support group—can make sticking to an exercise schedule or diet easier. It’s a key factor in the popularity of organized weight-loss groups and exercise classes. THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF

Frankincense Essential Oil by Anna Scurry

W

hen most people think of frankincense, they think of it as one of the three gifts given by the three wise men when they visited the newborn Jesus. Others know frankincense for its use as an ingredient in perfume, incense and skincare. But, there’s even more to know. Commonly used in aromatherapy, frankincense essential oil is typically sourced from the resin of the boswellia carterii or boswellia sacra tree, frankincense essential oil is said to offer a For starters, it is effective as an antiseptic, and even the fumes or smoke obtained from burning it have antiseptic and disinfectant qualities that eliminate the germs in the space where the smoke without any known side effects to protect them from tetanus and becoming septic. It is equally good on internal wounds and protects them from developing infections. Those same antiseptic qualities also make frankincense oil a useful preventive measure against oral issues, like bad breath, toothaches, cavities, mouth sores and other infections. As an astringent it can strengthen contract muscles, intestines and blood from premature losses of teeth and hair. This astringent quality can also reduce

the appearance of wrinkles and comabdominal muscles, and limbs associated with age. Above all, frankincense acts as a coagulant, helping to stop bleeding from wounds and cuts. Frankincense oil can eliminate gas and prevent it from building up in the body. This removal of excess gas from the intestines also gives relief from associated problems like stomachaches, pain in the abdominal region and chest, abnormal amounts of sweating, uneasiness, indigestion and many other related conditions. Anti-aging is another interesting property of the oil. It helps promote regeneration of healthy cells and also keeps the existing cells and tissues healthy. When individuals combine this aspect of frankincense oil with its powerful astringent capabilities, it creates a potent anti-aging quality. It can also help to eliminate sun spots, remove micro-wrinkles around the eyes and cheeks, and generally tone and tighten skin all over the body, while simultaneously replacing old or dying cells with new, healthy ones. When applied topically or inhaled, it can make the scars and after marks of boils, acne and pox on the skin fade at a much faster rate. Suffering from indigestion? A patient of chronic indigestion and acidity? Fed up with those antacids? Try frankincense

retention, frankincense essential oil is a natural and safe alternative. It promotes urination and helps people lose that extra water weight, as well as fats, sodium, uric acid and various other toxins from the body, with the added advantage of lowering blood pressure. The best part about this is that frankincense essential oil is completely safe and has no adverse side effects. It can soothe coughs and eliminates phlegm deposited in the respiratory tracts and the lungs, and also provide relief from bronchitis and congestion of nasal tract, larynx, pharynx, bronchi and lungs. It induces a feeling of mental peace, relaxation, satisfaction and spirituality, therefore helping to reduce stress and anxiety. In preliminary studies, scientists have observed that there is some agent within frankincense that stops cancer spreading, and which induces cancerous cells to close themselves down. A lot of work and research is still left to be done, but it does offer hope. Anna Scurry is co-director of The Alive Academy, in Pawtucket. oil, which contains digestive properties without any side effects and facilitates digestion the way most medicines should— unlike common antacids, which only suppress the symptoms. This oil speeds up the secretion of digestive juices (gastric juices, bile and acids) in the stomach and facilitates movement of food through the intestines by stimulating peristaltic motion. This means an all-around improvement in the digestion of food. For those taking medication,

The Keys to Creating a Successful Program When it comes to establishing a school garden, the most important ingredient is building a dedicated team of

Do Schools Need

Gardens?

O

ver 90 percent of Rhode Island’s population lives in urban areas, and most children in urban schools have no idea where food actually comes from. Many children have never planted anything, let alone watched something grow from seed to fruition. How have the principles of nature –upon which all life is based—become so foreign? We have grown increasingly disconnected from nature. So the answer to the title’s rhetorical question is a resounding, “Yes!” School gardens can ground children’s awareness in the circle of life and

gardens can promote hands-on, lifelong learning, fostering essential awareness that ties into nutrition, biology, chemistry, physics, ecology and much more.

A Garden at Every School Imagine a program to promote gardening at every school in our state. With this vision in mind, the Children’s Garden Network was founded seven years ago. Increasingly, gardens have become an exciting platform for learning in many schools, and many teachers have discovered how gardens provide a living context for learning in ways that “chalk talks” and books can never replicate. According to Stu Nunnery, one of the founders of the Children’s Garden

44

Rhode Island Edition

Network, “Having children grow plants and even produce food with their own hands teaches far more than gardening and imparts knowledge about life. If math and science are critical to our children’s future, it will be gardens that provide tone and texture to their studies. We should regard schoolyards as growing landscapes and use gardening to enhance the learning experience of all children, from pre-school to high school.” Urban school landscapes— typically barren—can be transformed with raised beds, container gardens and the addition of a few trees—some of them even fruit bearing. Classrooms can be enhanced with hanging plants, sprouting trays and terrariums.

Purposeful Learning, Practical Living While our culture has migrated away from farming, private sector jobs relating to the environment will present ever-increasing opportunities. It’s no secret we face many environmental challenges—water shortages, radioactive contamination, overuse of toxic pesticides, the vanishing of honey bees—yet adversity leads to opportunity and farming can help reclaim and regrow Rhode Island’s economy. This is already beginning to happen, with growth in the organic farming and consumable product sectors being some of the highlights in an otherwise sluggish economy.

RINaturalAwakenings.com

gardening is a year-round community commitment and that there is room on the team for experts and novices. With limited funding, resourcefulness is also critical. Fourth graders studying a plant unit at Fallon Memorial School used their own two hands to plant pine saplings in milk cartons saved from lunch. The saplings were donated by a local paperboard and packaging company that offered to help teach about recycling and replanting for replacing harvested trees. Business executives gave a classroom media presentation and facilitated the planting project outdoors under the shade of a full-grown maple tree, using only 40 minutes of class time. The subject of gardening poses a tremendous opportunity for teaching resourcefulness.

Year-Round Activity Knowing how a vegetable garden requires space in a well-protected sunny location with healthy soil, a school can identify this space in the late summer. During the fall, students can collect seeds from farm fresh vegetables like beans, cucumbers or pumpkin, which they can dry and then store and catalog in envelopes. They can also stake out a safe area for a bulb garden and plant garlic, onion and chive bulbs. During the winter, students can do indoor activities, such as conducting composting experiments to make healthy soil, growing edible sprouts in plastic salad containers and planting herbs like sage, rosemary and thyme in milk cartons, while keeping science journals. They can also read books and articles about organic gardening methods and begin to plan their outdoor garden. In the spring, seeds collected during the fall can be planted directly into the garden soil or in large recycled containers. Potato plants can be started from pieces of potato that have started growing “eyes”. Throughout the summer, the garden will need to be tended, weeded, debugged, watered and harvested as

experiencing the four seasons and a complete plant life cycle, students will be eager to experiment with new plant varieties and alternative methods. Real education reform and environmental sustainability is starting to sprout with school gardens across Rhode Island, Education catches on to this trend and promotes the integration of a garden into every school. Imagine the possibilities. Wendy Nadherny Fachon, MBA, is a health economist, writer and an afterschool educator for Child Opportunity Zone programs around Rhode Island. School Garden Resources Many local and national organizations provide training, books, videos and project ideas for school gardens, which show how to integrate the hands-on process with academic goals. “With Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture, we can actually lift the skin straight up. What we’re doing is eventually forming a little scar formation and that scar will actually keep the lift. Smaller needles tackle fine lines around the eyes and mouth. Those lines are so fine even filler can’t fill them.” — Dr. Calvin Lee
