h, what a winter it has been. As I sit here writing this, it is snowing yet again. I do enjoy my snow days, they can be cozy, as long as I don’t have to leave the house anyway, but I feel for those that do. I also feel for those whose lives are disrupted by all the school cancelations, clients rescheduling and the general mess the weather can leave in its wake. I generally enjoy the winter, and don’t mind some snow but this has gotten a little ridiculous. Seems every time I look at my phone there is yet another winter weather advisory. And it hasn’t just been the snow! I heard someone the other day refer to the temperature, at 27 degrees, as “not that cold”. Brrrr! The good news is that the days are getting longer, spring will be here soon and this will all be a distant memory.

This month’s magazine is about food, from the fresh, local food trends to food sensitivities. We take a look at the impact this life-sustaining ingredient has on so between what I ate and how I felt, it was truly life changing. I only wish I had done many things different. I am so grateful she is doing such a better job raising my grandchildren with organic foods and natural alternatives, and that she turned out okay despite my ignorance!

I strongly recommend reading ”Seven Signs of Food Sensitivities” on page 26.

Many common ailments children have can be connected to what they are eating. have a different, and not always obvious, reaction. Our world is changing with chemicals to make them something they are not. A recent article I read said the military is developing a pizza that has a three year shelf life. Yikes! Much like the fuel we put in our cars, the quality of the food we put in our mouths impacts how we run. Think about it.

As spring comes ever closer, keep an eye on our calendar listings. There are lots of ways you can get closer to nature and closer to your true you too. Like a lion, March roars in.

ongs of Joy (Joy Quinn Blum) and Drumsong (A. Michelle) will be participating in two holistic events this spring. On Sunday, March 23, they will be opening the England Holistic Health and Wellness Expo at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Warwick, and then playing individual minigong baths for attendees at their booth throughout the day.

Then on Saturday, April 5 at the 2nd Annual RI Yoga Festival in the Bishop Middle School on the East Side of Providence, they will be closing the day’s events at 5 p.m. with a healing gong bath session.

During a gong bath, Blum creates harmonic resonance by playing the gongs, metal and crystal singing bowls, rattles, drums and other vibrational healing instruments to help bring people to a state of relaxation, harmony and peace. ewport artists/illustrators and siblings, Rhiannon and Peter McCullough, have released their original and unique tarot decks, The Mask Tarot and The Steam Punk Tarot. The pair has enjoyed a successful response to their offerings at the recent Temple Con and Boston Comic Book conventions.

The decks are based on the traditional 78-card tarot. Each card is a separate and unique work of art, hand drawn and digitally colored and printed professionally on heavy coated card stock. Illustrator Peter McCullough is a graduate of Massachusetts College of Art. Rhiannon is both an illustrator and actor and a graduate of The University of Hawaii. Both siblings also collaborate on a series of graphic novels.

The siblings come to their exposure and interest in tarot honestly. Their mom is well-known Rhode Island tarot reader and teacher Cris McCullough.

wo GMO labeling bills--H7042 and H7093—have been introduced for Rhode Island’s 2014 legislative session.

A group of Rhode Islanders has formed a grass roots coalition to prompt constituents to contact their district representatives and senators and ask them to support this important legislation. The coalition is looking for help with this in all districts. Raffa Yoga A Catalyst for Change

By doing so, owner Christine Raffa created an industry leading, green-built yoga studios, 21 massage and therapeutic treatment rooms, six heat therapy relaxation rooms, a raw juice and food bar, along with a stylish boutique with yoga fashions, equipment and body care items.

However, Raffa hasn’t stopped there. The studio—and its impact on the community—just keeps growing with the addition of more classes and more efforts toward sustainability.

“We are determined to help something needs to change,” notes Raffa. “Education is a fundamental step toward change. Most people want to

do the right thing, but they don’t always know what that is.

“We live in a society of convenience,” she continues. “We don’t always consider how harmful our actions may be in the long run. If consumers stand up, we can make a difference and commit to a more sustainable way of living.”

With that in mind, Raffa is making great leaps toward practicing what they preach. They’ve begun a large recycling effort, which includes the use of Mason jars at the juice and raw food bar. “We have really high quality juice,” says Raffa. “We don’t want the next step to pollute our community. We serve drinks in jars and ask that people return them so that they can be washed, sterilized and used again and again.” She said it’s something individuals get really excited about and making small steps in be-

I think for them it’s beand helping the community.”

Another new offering for which Raffa is particularly excited is the addition of a yoga stretch class, led by Stefany Reed. Yoga Stretch is designed for those who wish to journey a bit deeper into the connective tissues of the body while balancing their practice with therapeutic

Suspects: Intolerance to casein—a protein prevalent in dairy cow milk different from its form in breast milk that can get into mothers’ milk or formula— tends to irritate an infant’s gut lining, (GERD) and then chronic ear infections or constipation, says Dorfman.

Action: Remove dairy from the baby’s and nursing mom’s diet for at least a week. For formula feeding, choose a brand made with predigested casein or whey. To heal baby’s damaged intestinal lining, give 10 billion CFU (colony forming units) daily of probiotic bacteria, mixed in a bottle or sprinkled on food.

Chronic Diarrhea

Suspects: Intolerance to gluten (a protein in wheat and other grains) or lactose (dairy sugar). Lactose intolerance is usually a root cause and is present in nearly everyone that’s gluten intolerant, Dorfman says.

Action: Get a blood test to check for celiac disease, then eliminate gluten for at least a month. Although the diarrhea could end within a week, “You need a few weeks to see a trend,” counsels Dorfman. Consume fermented dairy products like cheese and yogurt, which products may also test OK.

Chronic Ear Infections

Suspects: Dairy intolerance and for many, soy sensitivity. Some research has shown that 90 percent of kids with have food reactions, corroborated by Dorfman’s patients.

Fresh Food Trends Natural Trailblazers in Sustainable Eating

Food experts have listed local, regional and sustainable foods among the top food trends for 2014. Consumers’ heightened environmental

here’s even a new term, “hyperlocal”, to describe produce harvested fresh from onsite gardens at restaurants, schools, supermarkets and hospitals—all designed for sourcing tasty, nutrient-rich foods minus the fuelguzzling transportation costs. Adding emphasis to the need to preserve vital local food sources, the United Nations has designated 2014 as the International Year of Family Farming.

Here are four thriving food trends resulting from shifts in Americans’ thinking and our growing love for all things local.

Foraging

What could be more entertaining and economical than searching for and gathering wild foods in their natural habitat?

From paw paws and persimmons in Missouri to palmetto berries in Florida and seaweed in California, Mother Nature provides a feast at her children’s feet.

Commonly foraged foods include nuts,

mushrooms, greens, herbs, fruits and regional native wild foods and cash in on some “free” nutritious meals, foragers need to know where and when to harvest their bounty. Conservation departments and state and national parks often Jill Nussinow, also known as The Veggie Queen, a registered dietitian and cookbook author in Santa Rosa, California, characterizes foraging as “nature’s treasure hunt.” Nussinow says she forages for the thrill of it and because, “It puts you very much in touch with the seasons.”

On her typical foraging excursions through forests and on beaches, Nussinow notes, “You never know what you lettuce, mustard pods or sea vegetables.

However, she warns, “You have to know what you are doing. Some wild foods can be harmful.”

For example, Nussinow advises getting to know about mushrooms before venturing forth to pick them. She recommends the book Mushrooms Demysti, by David Arora, as a learning tool, and checking with local mycological cation. She also likes the advice of “Wildman” Steve Brill, of New York City, who publishes educational articles at Wildman SteveBrill.com. “He knows more about wild foods than anyone I know,” she says.

Vermont wildcrafter Nova Kim teaches her students not only how to identify wild edibles, but also how to harvest them sustainably. It’s critical to make sure wild foods will be available for future generations.

His book takes the reader on a journey to four different faith communities— Catholic, Protestant, Pentecostal and Jewish—to explore connections between spiritual nourishment and the cultivation of food. Bahnson speaks about sacred soil and the communities of mystical microorganisms that lie within and create the foundation for sustenance.

He also describes the special power of communal gardens, which welcome all and provide nourishing food, yet come to satisfy more than physical hunger.

Regardless of religious denomination, Amanda Archibald, a registered dietitian in Boulder, Colorado, believes, “We are in a new era of food—one that embraces and honors food producers and food systems that respect soil, environment and humanity itself.”

n recent times, we have begun to rediscover how important sound vibration and harmonics, including music, are in maintaining and improving our physical and mental health. The term “rediscover” is used because the ancients knew well how important the balance and harmony of our body/mind/spirit is to our health and well-being. Modern science now supports the ancient belief that all matter emanates from vibration or sound. Quantum physics has shown that up of vibrating energy. When that energy is out of balance in a person, animal or plant, a blockage or dis-ease may be created. Just as everyone needs good food to nourish and renew the physical body, we all need the beauty of sound and vibration to nourish and nurture our souls.

lthough following a diet without gluten has become easier due to increased availability and labeling of gluten-free foods, we still need to know how to make sure which foods strictly qualify. We always have more control in our own kitchen, yet we’re not always eating at home.

Natural Awakenings asked experts to comment on reasons for the demand and offer practical tips and tactics for healthy eating on the go.

According to the Center for Celiac Research & Treatment, 18 million Americans are now gluten sensitive, 3 million more suffer from celiac disease, and the numbers continue to skyrocket, says Dr. David Perlmutter, a neurologist and author of Grain Brain. Gluten, a naturally occurring protein in wheat, barley and rye, is prevalent in the modern American diet. Perlmutter points to new wheat hybrids and increasing amounts of gluten in processed foods as exacerbating the problem. He particularly cites today’s overuse of antibiotics as contributors to “inappropriate and excessive reactions to what might otherwise have represented a non-threatening protein like gluten.”

Shepard also recommends avoiding pre-sweetened varieties.

Kate Chan, a teacher and mother of two in suburban Seattle, Washington, who has been following a gluten-free diet since 2000, has solved the problem of eating healthy at work another way: The family cooks extra the night before.

“While cleaning up the kitchen, I just pack the leftovers for lunch. I like to vary the side dishes a bit if I pack side dishes at all, and toss in fruit and more vegetables,” she says. Chan likes to use a bento-style lunch box with several compartments, plus thermal containers, so she can enjoy a variety of gluten-free lunch options.

On the Road In Los Angeles, California, Kristine Kidd, former food editor at Bon Appétit, has

recently returned to gluten-free eating.

On her menu-planning and recipe blog, KristineKidd.com, and in her cookbook, Weeknight Gluten Free, she recommends whole, fresh foods from farmers’ markets that are naturally gluten-free.

When she and her husband hike the Sierra Mountains, she carries homeeat on the way up and packs gluten-free soups such as butternut squash and ings, and fruit for a delicious lunch upon reaching the peak.

Some gluten-free snacks can contain as many empty calories as other types of junk food, notes Registered Dietitian Katharine Tallmadge. “Many ‘gluten-free’ products are made with which contain plenty of calories, but few vitamins or minerals.” She agrees with Kidd and others that choosing whole, natural, fresh foods, which are naturally gluten-free, makes for healthy eating wherever we go.

Scouts, badges, troops and summer camp—they’re not just for kids anymore. Dog Scouts of America is a new twist on tradition that is fun for all ages.

Frankincense Essential Oil

hen most people think of frankincense, they think of it as one of the three gifts given by the three wise men when they visited the newborn Jesus. Others know frankincense for its use as an ingredient in perfume, incense and skincare. But, there’s even more to know.

Commonly used in aromatherapy, frankincense essential oil is typically sourced from the resin of the boswellia carterii or boswellia sacra tree, frankincense essential oil is said to offer a For starters, it is effective as an antiseptic, and even the fumes or smoke obtained from burning it have antiseptic and disinfectant qualities that eliminate the germs in the space where the smoke without any known side effects to protect them from tetanus and becoming septic.

It is equally good on internal wounds and protects them from developing infections.

Those same antiseptic qualities also make frankincense oil a useful preventive measure against oral issues, like bad breath, toothaches, cavities, mouth sores and other infections.

As an astringent it can strengthen contract muscles, intestines and blood from premature losses of teeth and hair.

the appearance of wrinkles and comabdominal muscles, and limbs associated with age. Above all, frankincense acts as a coagulant, helping to stop bleeding from wounds and cuts.

Frankincense oil can eliminate gas and prevent it from building up in the body. This removal of excess gas from the intestines also gives relief from associated problems like stomachaches, pain in the abdominal region and chest, abnormal amounts of sweating, uneasiness, indigestion and many other related conditions.

Anti-aging is another interesting property of the oil. It helps promote regeneration of healthy cells and also keeps the existing cells and tissues healthy. When individuals combine this aspect of frankincense oil with its powerful astringent capabilities, it creates a potent anti-aging quality. It can also help to eliminate sun spots, remove micro-wrinkles around the eyes and cheeks, and generally tone and tighten skin all over the body, while simultaneously replacing old or dying cells with new, healthy ones. When applied topically or inhaled, it can make the scars and after marks of boils, acne and pox on the skin fade at a much faster rate.

ver 90 percent of Rhode Island’s population lives in urban areas, and most children in urban schools have no idea where food actually comes from. Many children have never planted anything, let alone watched something grow from seed to fruition. How have the principles of nature –upon which all life is based—become so foreign? We have grown increasingly disconnected from nature. So the answer to the title’s rhetorical question is a resounding, “Yes!” School gardens can ground children’s awareness in the circle of life and

gardens can promote hands-on, lifelong learning, fostering essential awareness that ties into nutrition, biology, chemistry, physics, ecology and much more.

A Garden at Every School Imagine a program to promote gardening at every school in our state. With this vision in mind, the Children’s Garden Network was founded seven years ago. Increasingly, gardens have become an exciting platform for learning in many schools, and many teachers have discovered how gardens provide a living context for learning in ways that “chalk talks” and books can never replicate.

Network, “Having children grow plants and even produce food with their own hands teaches far more than gardening and imparts knowledge about life.

If math and science are critical to our children’s future, it will be gardens that provide tone and texture to their studies. We should regard schoolyards as growing landscapes and use gardening to enhance the learning experience of all children, from pre-school to high school.” Urban school landscapes— typically barren—can be transformed with raised beds, container gardens and the addition of a few trees—some of them even fruit bearing. Classrooms can be enhanced with hanging plants, sprouting trays and terrariums.

Purposeful Learning, Practical Living While our culture has migrated away from farming, private sector jobs relating to the environment will present ever-increasing opportunities. It’s no secret we face many environmental challenges—water shortages, radioactive contamination, overuse of toxic pesticides, the vanishing of honey bees—yet adversity leads to opportunity and farming can help reclaim and regrow Rhode Island’s economy. This is already beginning to happen, with growth in the organic farming and consumable product sectors being some of the highlights in an otherwise sluggish economy.

gardening is a year-round community commitment and that there is room on the team for experts and novices. With limited funding, resourcefulness is also critical. Fourth graders studying a plant unit at Fallon Memorial School used their own two hands to plant pine saplings in milk cartons saved from lunch.

The saplings were donated by a local paperboard and packaging company that offered to help teach about recycling and replanting for replacing harvested trees. Business executives gave a classroom media presentation and facilitated the planting project outdoors under the shade of a full-grown maple tree, using only 40 minutes of class time. The subject of gardening poses a tremendous opportunity for teaching resourcefulness.

Year-Round Activity Knowing how a vegetable garden requires space in a well-protected sunny location with healthy soil, a school can identify this space in the late summer.

During the fall, students can collect seeds from farm fresh vegetables like beans, cucumbers or pumpkin, which they can dry and then store and catalog in envelopes. They can also stake out a safe area for a bulb garden and plant garlic, onion and chive bulbs.

During the winter, students can do indoor activities, such as conducting composting experiments to make healthy soil, growing edible sprouts in plastic salad containers and planting herbs like sage, rosemary and thyme in milk cartons, while keeping science journals.

They can also read books and articles about organic gardening methods and begin to plan their outdoor garden.

In the spring, seeds collected during the fall can be planted directly into the garden soil or in large recycled containers. Potato plants can be started from pieces of potato that have started growing “eyes”. Throughout the summer, the garden will need to be tended, weeded, debugged, watered and harvested as
