Why do we need supplements?

To get the same amount of iron as you would have from 1 cup of spinach in 1945, you would have to eat 65 cups today. An orange that contained 50mg of Vitamin C in 1950, now contains 5mg. Why? 1) the lack of crop rotation 2) chemicals in the soil killing the good microbes.

hen having children, there are so many things to worry about, consider, decide and agonize over. From the moment we learn of a child’s impending arrival, we never look at the world in quite the same way again. Taking on this pivotal responsibility can be anxiety inducing, despite our best efforts.

The world is always changing and as our children’s mentors, we take it upon ourselves to lead them in the right direction. Billions of people now have access to unimaginable information unavailable to previous generations, topped off by success secrets formerly shared with only a select few. We wear our connection to the Internet like an extra limb, using it to help us understand what had only been mysteries to anyone other than genius academics previously. We routinely exchange wide-ranging ideas through an unlimited network of social connections. And yet there is so much we still don’t understand. We are so quick to put labels on people and things. This person is “smart”, “pretty”, “slow”, or “unattractive”. Are any of us any one thing, all the time? I have days when I feel all of those things! Labels can stick to a person’s psyche and limit what they think they are capable of. Smart people are socially inept, pretty people survive on their looks, slow people don’t matter. Are any of these things true? What brilliance around us, we still suffer from the human condition of judging people who are not like us. As the number of autistic spectrum diagnosis increases by the day, some parents “Working Successfully with Asperger’s and ADD Requires a New Perspective,” is a refreshing take on the importance of shifting away from damaging societal labels to embrace the whole child. Parental understanding of these children’s special circumstances combined with natural therapeutic remedies as well as western style treatments can help balance young lives. I have long believed in the brain-gut connection. Swift spells it out and the damage it can do here. No two individuals are the same, nor should we strive for them to be. Instead, we are reminded to celebrate each child’s uniqueness and encourage their healthy myriad of resources to help children grow into their full potential, realizing happiness, humble self-esteem and satisfaction in life. We hope that some of the words with trust, that all is as it should be with our children and all is well. Be well and enjoy these magical summer days in New England.

Grass is mostly water, so clippings break down quickly when left on the lawn, providing great nutritional value to the lawn. Grass, however, doesn’t breakdown quickly when buried in the degrade. hen Princeton University researchers analyzed data from a representative sample of 40 African-American boys enrolled in the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study that followed children born in major U.S. cities between 1998 and 2000, they determined that those that lived through 9 years of age with less-stable families, such as parents with multiple partners and harsh or hostile parenting styles, had a higher probability of having shorter telomeres compared with other children. Telomeres were, on average, 40 percent longer among children from stable families. Telomeres are the segments of DNA at either end of a chromosome that protect the ends from deterioration or fusion with neighboring chromosomes. Shorter telomeres can decrease life expectancy by reducing the number of times our cells can divide, and scientists are discovering that a person’s living environment may lead to the condition. Using the heart as an organ of perception, Volden and Cohen are able

(ADHD) specialist built a thriving psychotherapy practice in Rhode Island treating the avalanche of symptoms commonly attributed to ADHD or culture-induced stress. She taught her clients a way of being that promotes and sustains one’s best self, most meaningful relationships, and highest potential while still managing to live in the fast current of everyday life. Using a collaborative team approach combining cognitive-behavioral therapy, wellregulated medication and nutritional support, she says her clients reported vast improvements in their ability to cope with their symptoms. Volden’s views on ADHD and its treatment have undergone a radical transformation. “I question whether ADHD, as it is commonly understood by the medical profession, is a valid or useful diagnosis,” she says. “What I know now is that in the past, I wasn’t simply treating the by-products of a feverishly busy culture, or the clusters of symptoms we call ADHD, but was treating unresolved trauma held within the collective consciousness of a family’s lineage.” Now, instead of teaching clients coping skills and behavioral techniques to overcome their ADHD, she is using an intensive experiential process that in one to three sessions often transforms ADHD from a so-called disorder into an advantageous personality trait. “To my continuing amazement,” Volden reports, “I am seeing the problematic symptoms of ADHD subside as the roots of trauma are rapidly making dramatic progress in velopment, purposeful work and loving relationships.

experiential process that has become the centerpiece of her practice occurred in 2012 when she participated in a women’s leadership seminar series, presented by Boston-based psychologist, Dan Booth Cohen, PhD, on an innovative European approach to psychological healing known as Systemic Constellations. After taking part in a demonstration, Volden was able to recognize a profound truth about the pattern of trauma on her maternal side. The entire process lasted only a few minutes and Volden tucked away the experience into her mind. But in the weeks immediately following, she noticed that her grandmother, mother, sister and herself all experienced personal breakthroughs around issues that had held them stuck for years. A few months successes that had ignited among all the women in her family, Volden connected the dots to the constellation experience and worked with Cohen on how to adapt and apply the Systemic Constellations approach in her practice. In the two years since, they have created a unique therapeutic approach that has revolutionized both their practices and created scores of extraordinary success stories from their clients. Cohen observes that “we are not only the accumulation of our personal experiences. We are also beings that exist within a larger fabric of collective consciousness. Problems and disturbances in our lives, especially those that cannot be easily remedied, are often after-effects of inherited trauma from our parents, grandparents, or older ancestral lines.”

RINaturalAwakenings.com

generations that continue to affect their living descendants. He explains, “The human body has evolved to perceive consciousness that endures beyond physical death. When shrouded in secrecy, shame and guilt, the impact of prior generations’ traumas appear as the present generations’ emotional disturbances, chronic physical symptoms, and painful relationship patterns.” Their therapeutic method reverses these effects and unties the binding knots to the past, so clients can move forward without burden. As Volden and Cohen have ken heart can heal in one beat.” Recently, the two have developed a program to help couples accomplish in two days of intensive therapy what two years of couples’ therapy rarely does. In these two-day relationship intensives, couples are seeing and releasing the hidden patterns of ancestral trauma that fuel who have been re-enacting the same arguments for years and lost contact with each other emotionally and sexually are reporting a revival in their relationship way beyond any reasonable expectations,” says Volden. “We are at the edge of a new frontier for working with love, relationships and consciousness,” Volden suggests. In people are feeling called to explore, understand and access pathways towards living in alignment with their heart’s true purpose. They are compassionate and highly intuitive, but held back by blocks and obstacles that resist clearing. “The missing piece of the puzzle,” Cohen states, “is the awareness that consciousness surrounds us.” When we learn how to align our minds, hearts, and bodies with the consciousness that extends beyond our individual selves, we can comfort what disturbs us and become capable and empowered members within our communities of relationship. Working Successfully with Asperger’s and ADHD Requires

A New Perspective

by Katja Swift

U

p until now, society has understood brains in a limited way, but it is now recognized that the brain isn’t just one organ. In the book mBraining, which is a synthesis of the latest research in neurology and cognitive science, the authors suggest that in addition to the head-brain, there is also a heart-brain and a gut-brain. search of “enteric nervous system” yields piles of new studies, such as those at Columbia University Medical Center and David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), about the effects gut function has on mental health. Similar information is building about the nervous and endocrine functions of the heart, which it turns out, is not just for pumping blood. Joseph Chilton Pearce, author of a number of books on human development and child development, explains, “The idea that we can think with our hearts is no longer just a metaphor, but is, in fact, a very real phenomenon. We now know this because the combined ing that the heart is the major center of

intelligence in human beings.” Pearce, who is part scholar, scientist, mystic and itinerant teacher, and keeps in close touch with brilliant men molecular biologists have discovered the heart is an important endocrine gland. In response to our experience of the world, Pearce says it produces and

releases a major hormone that profoundly affects every operation in the limbic structure, or what we refer to as the “emotional brain.”

The Three-Brain Axis

Much like the Hypothalamic–Pituitary– Adrenal (HPA) axis, the three brains can be considered another existing axis. In order to function properly, all three brains need to be in some sort of balance, which may not be equally distributed. It is suggested that those that are balanced more in favor of the gut will have particular talents in certain areas; perhaps they will be better at making quick decisions or handling emergency situations. People who are balanced more in favor of the head may be better at writing software or databases, and those balanced in favor of the heart may have stronger powers of empathy. These balances are just like any other constitutional balance—some people have larger or smaller skeletal frames; others have hotter or cooler tempers. Therefore, consideration can be made that “normal” or “neurotypical” does not really exist. The term “neurotypical” came into use in an attempt to move away from comparing folks to people who are “normal”. While this move was an important step, “neurotypical” is still too constricting; it still implies that there is something more normal, at least by merit of being more common, than something else. It is more useful—and more accurate—to work instead with the concept as something based on what is considered to be the usual or correct way of doing something; conforming to norms. Relevant to Asperger’s and ADHD, the terms neuro-normative, socionormative and culturally normative each describe a state that is considered normal or appropriate by society in this time and location. Even so, that norm is volatile; it is trendy. The norm itself does not imply absolute value, only that in this moment and in this time, this is valued by a certain segment of society, for example, what is considered to be beautiful.

Someone identified with ADHD or Asperger’s shouldn’t be considered to have anything wrong with them. Perhaps an imbalance, or a range of balance that is not currently normative, exists, but that should not be interpreted as a disease, condition or diagnosis. A Shift in Language

Why is the shift in language so important? Because with current standards of “normal” versus ADHD, or even “neurotypical” versus Asperger’s, a statement is made that something is wrong with one of the people in the equation. The idea that three brains exist in a range of balance can help with an uner’s shouldn’t be considered to have anything wrong with them. Perhaps an imbalance, or a range of balance that is not currently normative, exists, but that should not be interpreted temper is not pathologically wrong; it might not always be convenient, but there’s nothing wrong with that person. In when setting healthy boundaries. Similarly, a person that cries easily during sad movies is likely more sympathetic to friends in need. Everyone is affected by these types of imbalances—sometimes they are useful, and sometimes they are uncomfortable. People who can be grouped as Asperger’s (which is itself a normative scale), may have in particular strongly developed head-brains and might have damaged or compromised gutbrains. The Autism Research Institute cites numerous studies that those diagnosed as Asperger’s and ADHD tend to fall abnormally into the high end of gut dysbiosis (a microbial imbalance in the digestive tract) and the high end of gluten/casein sensitivity. Is there anything wrong with the person, or a pathological diagnosis to be made? It is conceivable that this person’s head-brain is simply fullspeed ahead without the grounding balance of his gut-brain due to damage and impaired development in the gut. Further, it may be that the heart-brain is also suffering. Much like the HPA axis in the endocrine system, it is suggested that the brains each try to compensate when one is functioning below its optimal level. This may result in either the person feeling emotions too intensely, or, for protection, shutting them down altogether.

Restoring Balance

ogy, which is useful not as a way to identify what is “wrong” with a person, but because restoring gut balance will help restore overall balance. Even those without ADHD or Asperger’s often have imbalances in this way, but theirs stay within the bounds of the current norms and are shared by enough people to be considered “normal”. imbalance is visible to others in a certain, more obvious way. Someone else might have a similar imbalance level in the gut-brain or heart-brain without the over-development of the head-brain, but that person is not considered to be on the spectrum, because they get by as “neuro-normative” and do not stand out among others. This isn’t to mean that “normative” gut-brain and heart-brain imbalances don’t cause discomfort; imbalance is uncomfortable for everyone, but while discomfort is experienced, a particular person is not ditrend towards gut- and heart-brain imbalance in our society. everyone. Cultural Normativity

The current cultural obsession with normativity is itself a problem. Everyone is not supposed to be the same; each of us is supposed to possess different skills and talents. Thomas Armstrong, Ph.D., author of Unleashing the Advantages of Your Differently Wired, states, “More people are understanding that ADHD brings with and that appropriate career selection can be an important part of determining whether one will be successful or unsuccessful in a particular job.” A person able and happy as a forest ranger, but because certain types of jobs are more highly respected than others, that person might be raised to pursue a profession that is uncomfortable and poorly suited to his nature. Two types of overdevelopment that are currently socially acceptable are an NFL football player and a lawyer. Each of these people, during their maturation and training, will choose parts of their nature to develop, or even over-develop. The resulting imbalance is socially acceptable, so they are considered “normal”; concluding that “normative” imbalances are arbitrary. Recognizing that “normative” is just another fashion allows each person’s talents to be seen much more

utdoor walks provide tremendous real world learning opportunities for children and adults. Identifying which plants to avoid, as well as those with medicinal, healing properties, is something that even young children can learn to do.

Poison ivy: There is a well-known, easy-to-memorize

Dandelion: A more recognizable common weed, the dandelion is yet another useful medicinal plant. The modern nale, which refers to the plant’s use as a healing herb. The genus name comes from the Greek “taraxos” (a disorder) and “akos” (a remedy). The species name, , indicates it ‘Dandelion’ comes from the French “dent de lion”, meaning lion’s tooth, referring to the jagged leaves, which look like sharp teeth. Considered by some to be annoying and unwelcome, the tenacious and ubiquitous dandelion is actually edible, tasty and surprisingly nutritious. Dandelions are a natural source of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus, and help promote strong bones and teeth. In addition, the leaves are a good source of protein (14 percent). The dandelion also offers a mouthful of unique nutrients that help maintain a strong liver and digestive system. Dandelion leaves can be mixed with salad greens, added to

rhyme of advice: Leaves of three, let it be. The three leaves found on poison ivy arrange themselves on each stem, and shiny or dull, green or red. When most people come into direct contact with poison ivy, they develop a bubbly skin rash that is extremely itchy and uncomfortable. It grows everysand dunes, and it is worth noting that the only mammals allergic to poison ivy are humans. It is as if the intolerable plant forms a line of defense to protect the rest of nature, sending a clear message to humans to be respectful of the natural environment. Creeping vines of poison ivy can be downright sneaky when it comes to protecting nature, appearing as ground and completely concealing the trunk of a tree. In autumn, the leaves may become enticing colors of orange and yellow, and while most poison ivy leaves have pointed tips, some leaves have been known to take the form of hearts.

Jewelweed: People who are truly knowledgeable about

wild plants will recognize jewelweed, the remedy to poison ivy rashes. It tends to grow right next to poison ivy, which seems a curious convenience provided by nature. The distinctive oval-toothed leaves repel rain, making the plant look as if it is covered with tiny jewels. Native Americans used the jewelweed plant as medicine for skin irritations, and herbalists use jewelweed to make soaps.

Sugar calories drive food addiction,

Dr. Mark Hyman is Fed Up with Our National Health Crisis by Judith Fertig

I

n the groundbreaking new documenFed Up, Dr. Mark Hyman prescribes a major overhaul of the diets of all family members in communities across America to prevent far-reaching unwanted consequences. Hyman practices functional medicine, which takes a wholesystem approach to treating chronic illnesses by identifying and addressing their root causes, starting with poor diet. He is also the bestselling author of a series of books based on The Blood Sugar Solution.

What has your experience with Fed Up shown you about the root cause of many diseases? In Fed Up to talk with them about their health and understand the roots of their family crisis of morbid obesity, pre-diabetes, and hopelessness. Rural South Carolina, where they live, is a food desert with nearly10 times as many fast-food and convenience stores as supermarkets. The family’s kitchen was also a food desert, with barely a morsel of real food. There were no ingredients to make real food—only pre-made factory science projects sold in cans and boxes with unpronounceable, unrecognizable ingredient lists. This family desperately wanted

knowledge or skills. They lived on food stamps and fast food and didn’t know how to navigate a grocery aisle, shop for real food, read a label, equip a kitchen or cook nutritious meals. Their grandmother has a garden, but never taught her children how to grow food, even though they live in a temperate rural area.

What results did the family see when they changed their eating habits? I got the whole family cooking, washing, peeling, chopping, cutting and touching real food—onions, garlic, carrots, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes, salad greens, even asparagus. After 12 months, the mother had lost 100 pounds and was off of blood pressure medication, and because the father for a kidney transplant. The son originally lost 40 pounds, but because he was stuck in a toxic food environment at school and only able to get a job at a fast-food eatery, he gained much of it back. I’m happy to report that he is now working to get back on track.

How is sugar a primary factor in creating obesity? Of some 600,000 processed food items on the market, 80 percent contain added sugar. Sugar calories act differently from fat or protein calories in the body.

fatty liver (now the number one reason for liver transplants). They also disrupt appetite control, increasing hunger and promoting overeating, and are biologically addictive. Sugar calories are the major contributor to heart attacks, strokes, cancer, dementia and Type 2 diabetes. Sugar is a root cause behind the tripling of obesity rates in children since the 1970s. As just one example illustrating government policy culprits, although poor people are disproportionately affected by obesity, the food industry vigorously opposes any efforts to limit the use of food stamps for soda. Every year, the U.S. government pays for $4 billion in soda purchases by the poor (10 billion servings annually) on the front end, and then pays billions more on the back end through Medicaid and Medicare to treat related health consequences that include obesity and diabetes.

What are the consequences if we don’t attack the problem of poor diet now? The costs of a poor diet are staggering: At the present rate, by 2040, 100 percent of the nation’s federal budget will go for Medicare and Medicaid. The federal debt soars as our unhealthy kids fall heir to an achievement gap that limits America’s capacity to compete in the global marketplace. At the same time, having 70 service weakens national security. published in The New England Journal of Medicine, a group of respected scientists reviewing all the data affecting projected life spans concluded that of Americans ever that will live sicker and die younger than their parents. Health issues due to poor diet comprise a national crisis. They threaten our future, not just for those fat and sick among us, but all of us. For more information on Fed Up, visit FedUpMovie.com. Be Happy Now Simple Ways to Quickly Lift Your Spirits by April Thompson

S

inger-songwriter Pharrell Williams, whose infectious hit song, “Happy,” has spread joy worldwide, seems to know the secret to happiness. More than 1,500 people from 140-plus countries have posted their own happy video spinoffs at WeAreHappyFrom.com, inspired by his daylong music video featuring Los Angeles residents from all walks of life dancing and lip-syncing to the tune. Can happiness really be just a of measurement—a moment versus a lifetime. Research by such authorities as Psychologist Martin Seligman, Ph.D., director of the University of Pennsylvania Positive Psychology Center, suggests that several basic ingredients are keys to long-term happiness, including a sense of purpose, engaging activities, quality relationships and achievable goals. Ultimately, happiness is a subjective state, gauged only by personal perception. Still, there are quick, simple things we can do to shift our mood into a higher gear, according to Jonathan Robinson, author of Find Happiness Now: 50 Shortcuts for Bringing More Love, Balance, and Joy Into Your Life. “Broadly, happiness shortcuts fall into two categories—those that help in letting go of negative emotions and those that help in tuning into or expanding positive feelings,” says Robinson. “The end result is the same.”

Practice gratitude. When the day’s affronts seem excessive, we can reframe them by counting our blessings mentally or in a journal. Review the day with an eye to everything that went right. “Soon, you’ll start to see everything as a gift,” observes Robinson. Pencil it in. Take a few moments at the start of each week to block out a little time every day for happy activities. Pay it forward. It doesn’t take much to make someone’s day, advises Robinson. Give someone a compliment or a piece of chocolate and watch their attitude instantly change, which in turn lifts you into their happy cloud. Sing and dance. Williams applies this secret: Moving our bodies and vibrating our vocal chords helps shake us out of our mental cages. “It’s hard to feel bad when you sing. It’s a choice: You can stay angry for four hours or sing for 15 seconds,” Robinson notes. Don’t underestimate the power of a simple jumpstart to happiness. Research from the University of Arizona shows that as little as a forced smile not tides and mood-lifting serotonin in the brain, it activates a chain reaction of happiness around us.

We love our seafood, a delicious source of lean protein. DOG GONE SWIMMING SAFETY TIPS

irst, check if area community pools allow dogs for special sessions. Many offer canine swims as fundraisers during off-season periods. Make sure the pet is sociable and wears a life jacket. The best swimmers include breeds used in water rescue or retrieval, such as the Newfoundland, Labrador retriever, Portuguese water dog, poodle and spaniel, as opposed to those with shorter snouts and airways. The stocky bodies and shorter legs of Scotties and dachshunds are also less conducive to water play. Dr. Jules Benson, vice president of Veterinary Services at Petplan Pet Insurance, in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, gives three key safety tips: Be alert for signs of tiredness, like trouble staybreath; watch for vomiting, diarrhea or fever due to harmful bacteria in some waterways; and don’t let dogs drink from the ocean. Ingested salt water can unbalance electrolytes and lead to dehydration, brain damage, kidney failure and even death.

Pet expert Eileen Proctor recommends dabbing sunscreen on pet noses and ears before swimming and putting on the dog’s life jacket before going into, on or near the water. Always ensure that dogs are well-trained to come when called and leave found items and to take a break to rehydrate and rest. Supervise swimming dogs closely and make sure they aren’t drinking the water. If a dog hesitates to enter the water, leave his non-retractable leash on to reassure him he has assistance if needed, and stay in the pool with him. Establish a cue for entering and leaving the pool and use it before the dog overtires. Don’t allow a pet to climb the pool’s ladder to exit because a paw could slip, causing injury or panic. When boating, pull into a secluded area with no running propellers, active paddling or underwater snags, and keep the pet on a non-retractable lead or trained to swim close by. Rinse fur immediately after every swim to remove chlorine, bacteria, dirt or salt, and then dry the dog’s inner and outer ears.

Runner’s Hi Women and Social Media Revolutionize the Sport by Debra Melani

W

hether donning colorful tutus or making a marathon a girls’ day out, the current running scene is attracting a broader group of competition and personal bests, these runners are focusing on social bonding and overall well-being, likely boosting Two main factors are fueling what’s shaping up as a new running boom: running-boom era was male-centric and competitive,” observes Ryan Lamppa, of Running USA. He’s referring to the 1970s, when, largely thanks to 1972 Summer Olympic marathon gold medal winner Frank Shorter and The Complete Book of Running, by James Fixx, many were inspired to hook up Walkmans, lace up sneakers and train for distance races. “Today’s running boom is femalecentric, much bigger and more focused rather than competition.” Forget elapsed running time; just ing it, seems to be a growing mantra. Women’s participation hit an all-time high in recent years, comprising 56 percent of the more than 15.5 million by Running USA in 2012 and 61 percent of U.S. half-marathoners in 2013. “Women tend to be more social

and more in tune with their health overLamppa says. Couple the female factor with social media-driven, nontraditional race events and the result is explosive. “Events are fun, community-centered and sometimes charity-driven,” Lamppa says of the many innovations, from obstacle course action, which attracted 4 million entrants last year.

Boosts Bonding

These trends could indicate America’s studies show the social factor plays a huge motivational role in participation. “I think running adherence strengthens when there is accountability and social support,” remarks Englewood, New Jersey, sports psychologist Greg Chertok, citing a meta-analysis of data in that backs his notion. For example, such social exercise events inspire happiness. “If you are physically close to someone that is happy, eager and optimistic, you are naturally going to share those feelings,” explains Chertok, who is also a spokesman for the American College of Sports Medicine. “Just through social connectedness alone, you’ll gain boosted performance and mood.” ders (an intense obstacle course chal-

like if a married couple got stuck in a storm and had to brave the elements; the act of doing something challenging together is very bonding.” Simply joining a recreational running group—also increasingly popular and often social media-driven—can bolster success. “When a bunch of individuals work together to pursue a common goal, they are incentivized by the group,” Chertok remarks. “You’ll run at a faster clip or go a longer distance if you are with a group, because each runner values the group and doesn’t want to let members down.”

Brings Balance

Mixing things up can also improve running performance and decrease risks of injury, enhancing long-term staying power. One study found that eight weeks of simple strength-training exercises by conditioned runners boosted their running performances over their conditioned, but non-strength-training peers, as noted in the Health & Fitness Journal of the American College of Sports Medicine. As for injury prevention, everybody, regardless of sport, needs to cross-train, advises Mindy Caplan, a wellness coach in Albuquerque, New Mexico. “In any sport that you engage in, you end up working certain muscles the same way all the time. Then those tighter muscles start to pull on the joints and without stretching, you end up with problems.” Moving the body in different ways helps, and working on stretching and protect tendons and joints. “The new runner of this second running boom has much more informaand injury prevention,” says Lamppa, who occasionally cross-trains by biking and includes some yoga-related stretching as part of his regular routine. “You have to have balance in your running as in your life. If you can get to that point, you will get a very positive response from your body and mind.” elani Melani.com or DMelani@msn.com.

Girls on the Run womenRYSE Fitness Program Rhode Island

G

irls on the Run is an afterschool program for thirdthrough eighth-graders that inspires participants to live healthy and free from societal stereotypes and complete a community impact project while training for a 5k running event. Girls on the Run Rhode Island is currently looking for volunteer coaches and running buddies for the fall season. Coaching is a fun and rewarding volunteer experience. Coaches help girls to be joyful, healthy and a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. No coaching or running experience is necessary, but coaches must be committed to two, two-hour sessions a week for 10 weeks. Requiring less of a time commitment, running buddies are an integral part in helping build the young runners’ self-esteem and healthy body image during their 5k event. The fall 2014 season extends from September 8 to mid-NovemNovember 16 at Providence College. Volunteers are also needed on the day of the event. “Girls on the Run provides a unique opportunity to girls ages 8 to 13 unlike any other after school activity currently offered in Rhode Island,” says Michelle Duso, executive director. “We are creating generations of girls who believe in tivity; understand the importance of healthy eating; know what it means to be a supportive friend, neighbor and family member; and value the quality of their communities.” Island. EMPOWERS WOMEN by Nancy Somera

A

fter coaching hundreds of athletes each year for seven years, Tara Comer, a USA triathlon coach and yoga teacher, realized that the programs that led to the best results were those that incorporated goal setting, motivation and lessons in handling setbacks into the physical training. As a result, Comer co-founded womenprogram, which combines running, yoga, meditation and goal setting, and is designed for women to feel more self-empowered upon its completion. which includes support, accountability and community, really makes a difference in reaching goals,” she says. Comer is on a social mission to increase women’s health in Rhode Island, and eventually across the nation, through the womenRYSE program. Through community connections, shared experience and collective support, she hopes that womenRYSE will ered to women and build a new model for sustainable health. She trains people coaches who then lead groups in their own communities, earning an income while they do so. Currently there are 15 trained coaches, seven of which are actively operating programs, and Comer is looking to add even more women to the empowered network of coaches she is helping to grow. Upcoming coaches training sessions will be held September 6 and 7, in New Jersey, and October 4 and 5, in Rhode Island. Another is planned for Boston sometime this fall. All interested training members, whether a walker, beginning or intermediate runner, are encouraged to take part in an eight-week program. New runners will be coached on the two toughest hurdles to overcome: pacing and

breathing. Comer says that pranayama breathing associated with yoga helps runners increase lung capacity and learn to breathe properly. Participants includes a workbook with interactive tools, a meditation CD for increased peace and performance, online training tion tracking, and private online community for support and continuity. More importantly, Comer says, “You’ll connect with other women and gain another group of supportive friends.” To learn more about the program and upcoming dates of participation , call 401-218-0766 or visit WomenRYSE.com.
