t seems in a world where we have constant distractions and noise, silence is becoming a rarity. At a workshop recently, one of the things that we talked about in regards to self-care was meditation, and when, if ever, it is that we quiet our minds. People had different practices, some not at all. While having a regular, consistent practice is something I’m always going to ‘get around to’, I do enjoy silence whenever I can.

One of my favorite times is when driving.

I leave the radio off in the car, and enjoy letting my thoughts wander as I drive around our beautiful state. Fortunate to have several great views in my daily life, they will catch my eye and I regularly pause and focus my breath on being in the moment of gratitude and appreciation. I feel like that counts, and am forgiving of myself for not doing more.

In Sacred Silence by April Thompson on page 22, we learn about the growing popularity of silent retreats. I find this idea intriguing, although 10 days sounds rather challenging. I think a weekend only would be a good trial test in keeping my thoughts to myself rather than verbalizing my ongoing stream of consciousness.

My sense of silent peace has been challenged recently when I learned that the publisher of Natural Awakenings Long Island, Kelly Martinsen, woke up in the middle of the night to an electrical fire burning her house to the ground. She posted on Facebook, “We had a fire and I know that there is word out there that we ‘lost everything’. I want to assure everyone that this is not the case. While our house may be totaled, ‘everything’ I need was found the morning after the fire as I held my kids (all three!) and my husband in my driveway… for now we have no needs.”

She went on to thank Waleska Sallaberry who was staying with her and woke Kelly in time to get everyone to safety. Waleska publishes Natural Awakenings Puerto Rico with her husband, Luis Mendez (see September’s cover yoga photo); the family had relocated Waleska and the kids to New York after Hurricane Maria so she could enroll them in school. Luis remained in Puerto Rico and together they are doing everything they can to help rebuild their beautiful seaside village and natural health community.

After having her life turned upside down and then witnessing fire demolish Kelly’s home, Waleska even posted a picture of her new 2018 planner laying claim to the “Best Year Ever.” What if we all lived with such a healthy unattachment to material things, and maintained a peaceful sense of trust in what lies ahead?

As headlines swarm with reports of hurricanes, fires and shootings, these positive stories of people helping others abound, shine a bright light on the power of perspective. Thanksgiving is but a special reminder to express gratitude for all the good in our lives—especially that which can’t be bought, flooded or burned down. Whether it’s good health, a beautiful sunset, a kind hand or the embrace of a loved one, those are the things that really matter most.

newsbriefs Greening the Sphere Kicks Off 2017-18 Environmental Education Program

G

reening the Sphere, a local environmental nonprofit, will host the first class of its yearly youth program from 6 to 8 p.m., November 1, at the East Bay Chamber of Commerce, on Cutler Street, in Warren. The program will be in session until May when the organization will host its annual sustainability event, the Greening the Sphere Festival. Classes will convene every Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m., unless otherwise specified.

The program is designed to bring together middle school age students that will work with adult and student mentors to engage the local community in environmental problem solving and education. This vision culminates in the planning and creation of their sustainability festival with the students taking an active role in the process. Open to middle school age students, high school students interested in filling a leadership role are invited as well.

Inspired by great programs and methods that stimulate whole brain creative thinking, the program features activities and problem solving methods that use strategic questioning and tap into multiple genres such as science and art. Students will be part of an encouraging team tasked with developing sustainable solutions through creative, experiential learning.

“Even though classes begin in November, due to the nature of the program, students are able to join in at any time throughout the year,” asserts D’André Quinerly, youth program mentor, who adds, “Greening the Sphere as an organization is committed to empowering youth to provide solutions in building a more sustainable environment for future generations. This is done through the organization’s grassroots community organizing and collaboration with local businesses, nonprofits and community members.”

Ultraviolet Ink Infuses Energy into Tattoos

eiki master and tattoo artist, Jessica Irey, uses invisible ink to put a unique spin on her tattoo designs.

She began using invisible ink in her art about five years ago, saying, “There was something about the way it made me feel when lit up. It evoked emotions in me I didn’t know I had and made me feel completely connected to everything and everyone around me, as if everything is just energy.”

Cranberry Prebiotic Promotes Gut Health

esearch from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, has found that the cell walls of cranberries contain xyloglucan, a complex sugar that feeds the beneficial, naturally occurring bifidobacteria, enhancing the body’s microbiome.

“A lot of plant cell walls are indigestible, just like we can’t digest the special sugars found in xyloglucans,” explains nutritional microbiologist and researcher David Sela, Ph.D. “But when we eat cranberries, the xyloglucans enter our intestines, where beneficial bacteria can break them down into useful molecules and compounds.”

Sela emphasizes the importance of prebiotics. “With probiotics, we are taking extra doses of beneficial bacteria that may or may not help our gut health,” he says. “But with prebiotics, we already know that we have the beneficial guys in our guts, so let’s feed them with more nutrients and things that they like.”

Acupuncture and Herbs Ease Delirium in Patients

S

cientists from the Gifu University Graduate School of Medicine, in Japan, examined the impact of a combination of acupuncture and traditional herbal medicine on the rate of delirium in cardiovascular patients admitted into an intensive care unit. Of the 59 patients studied, 29 were treated with conventional care and 30 were given the same care, plus herbal medicine three times a day and acupuncture once a day.

In the treatment group, incidental rates of delirium were 6.6 percent, significantly lower than the 37.9 percent rate found in the control group. This group also required fewer sedative drugs traditionally used to combat aggressive behavior in delirious patients.

Using data from more than 12,000 people for an average of six years, researchers assessed their onion and garlic consumption using a food frequency questionnaire and compared those measurements with blood pressure and incidences of both cardiovascular and chronic kidney disease.

The scientists discovered the subjects that ate more onion and garlic regularly had risk reductions of 64 percent in cardiovascular disease, 32 percent in chronic kidney disease and 25 percent in hypertension compared to those that ate less of them.

Landfills generate environmental problems such as the greenhouse gas methane that warms the atmosphere and toxic chemicals from household cleaning products that pollute soil and groundwater. Installations are smelly, noisy and can breed disease-transmitting vermin, as well as harm wildlife.

Recycling helps cut the volume of waste, but the bulk of all trash continues to fill these dumps.

Sweden produces about the same amount of waste as other European nations, but less than 1 percent of its household refuse ends up in landfills.

Thirty-two waste-to-energy (WTE) plants that have been operating across the country for years incinerate more than 2 million tons of trash annually—almost 50 percent of all waste.

The country still recycles, but anything else normally ends up in the WTE incinerators, creating steam to generate electricity distributed on the grid. This system heats close to a million homes and powers more than a quarter-million, thus reducing Sweden’s reliance on fossil fuels. Sweden also helps to clean up other countries in the European Union by importing their trash and burning it.

Because specific products contain materials that cannot be recycled or incinerated, some landfills are still necessary.

Newberg’s team tested the brains of retreat participants before and one week after an Ignatian-based retreat, finding significant changes in their serotonin and dopamine systems. “Whether through prayers, walks or meditations, the single-minded ritualistic aspect of retreats seems to predispose the brain for peak spiritual experience,” he observes.

What to Expect

Formats vary, but most silent retreats entail extended periods of sitting meditation or prayer, often alternating with walking meditation or other mindful movement. Some may also entail a work detail, like sweeping the meditation hall or helping prepare meals.

“Work tasks help bring mindfulness into everyday life,” says Chas DiCapua, a resident teacher for the Insight Meditation Society’s flagship retreat center in Barre, Massachusetts, who has led silent retreats teaching Buddhist practices for 20 years. “The community aspect is equally important; being surrounded by people that support your spiritual practice can encourage you on what can be a lonely path.”

Silence doesn’t mean being static and somber or not thinking, counsels David Harshada Wagner, of Ojai, California, whose meditation retreats draw from the Indian mystical traditions of yoga, vedanta and tantra. “Silence is more than the absence of talking; it’s a powerful energy,” says Wagner. “Silent retreats are the loudest, as the energy is roaring within. It should be a joyous practice.”

Yet retreats aren’t a cakewalk.

facilitator Jennifer Howd chronicles the challenges of her first nine-day silent retreat in Joshua Tree, California, in her memoir Sit, Walk, Don’t Talk. Seven retreats later, Howd says that although the journey isn’t always easy, she always gains insights about herself and the nature of the mind.

Choosing a Retreat

Retreat leaders caution that while it’s good to jettison expectations and approach the experience with an open mind, choose a retreat that fits individual needs. The level of personal attention at retreats can vary greatly, remarks Thanissara. “Some may host 100 or more people, relying largely on taped instruction without much interaction with group leaders. A small group might be better for a first retreat,” she suggests.

DiCapua suggests finding a local community of a kindred practice to keep the momentum going, and not expect to keep it up as earnestly at home as at the retreat. Attending daylong maintenance retreats on Saturdays or Sundays can also help sustain individual practice. Above all, “Appreciate yourself for having thought to go on a retreat and follow it through,” says DiCapua. “It can be a radical thing.”

Choosing the Right Certified Hypnotist

A

certified hypnotist or hypnotic coach may be the answer for individuals that feel stuck in some area of his or her life, but finding the right one can seem an intimidating and difficult task. Letting someone into our mind can be scary, but rest assured, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis, and no one can make an individual do something against their will. In fact, any hypnotist, no matter how skilled, is nothing more than a facilitator trained to help people find their own power.

A professional hypnotist can assist with many common issues, including weight loss (other than diagnosed eating disorders), smoking cessation, stress management, pre-surgery hypnosis, child birth hypnosis, alcohol/drug habit problems, pain management (under medical supervision), attention deficit disorder coaching, confidence building, fears (flying, driving, public speaking, performance, social fears), and more.

Additionally, hypnosis can guide people in their career, education, relationships and assist with athletic performance.

Factors to Consider When Searching for a Hypnotist Qualifications. Hypnosis is not a licensed profession. Education and training in hypnotism and coaching vary. Most professional hypnotists are certified by national associations with educational and ethical standards like The National Guild of Hypnotists. Time in practice is another indication, but not the sole criterion for a hypnotist’s suitability to an issue; newcomers to the field may be the perfect person to help you achieve your goals.

Attitude/Chemistry. If you are gay, don’t go to a hypnotist with repressed homophobia. If religion is important to you, find someone that seems to have a spiritual approach. If you are in 12-step recovery, find someone that understands what that involves.

Gender. Gender may not be a factor in some cases, or for an issue like quitting smoking, but if it is for you, listen to your instinct.

Realistic claims. Beware of exaggerated claims. No one can guarantee

Cost. A hypnotist should be clear about how much hypnosis sessions cost and how many he or she recommends to address the issue. Most hypnotists will offer a free 30- minute consultation in the office or on the phone. Beware of programs that ask for payment of dozens of sessions in advance. Generally this is more marketing hype than sound hypnosis. And don’t expect too much from low priced hypnosis groups. Some people get good results from these groups; many don’t.

Remember a professional certified hypnotist is not a psychotherapist unless otherwise credentialed. When suffering from a genuine mental illness, a properly trained certified hypnotist will refer those individuals to a licensed professional. He or she may work under the direction of a therapist, but has been trained to only practice within a well-defined scope of practice. As the National Guild of Hypnotists puts it, “Hypnotists work with everyday people on everyday problems.”

How to Research Hypnotists The internet is a good start, but not the only method of research. Following are a few tips to make finding the right hypnotist easier: n Visit their webpage. You will get a feel for them and get answers to many of your questions. n Look at comments and reviews from former clients, especially on Yelp.com. n Seek referrals from your doctor, therapist and friends. A few physicians refer to certified hypnotists. A traditional therapist may point you to a hypnotist with a good reputation. You may have friends or family that rave about the results they got in quitting smoking or losing weight with a particular hypnotist. n Call a prospective hypnotist and ask questions. Get a feel for them over the phone. Are they rushed or interested in what you have to say?

Do they seem to have a solution that

will work with you? How many sessions do they recommend? Are they forthcoming about costs? n Take advantage of the offer of a free consultation if any doubts exist.

Many hypnotists will gladly either spend time with you on the phone or invite you to come into their office for a 15- to 30-minute free consultation.

Keep in mind that hypnosis is about giving people back their own power. If a hypnotist doesn’t feel like a good match, don’t be afraid to tell the hypnotist you will not be continuing. Then look for the one that is right for you.

As a result, those facing diabetes and other health challenges are accessing contemporary resources such as Louise L. Hay’s explanation of the emotional roots of disease in You Can Heal Your Life, and the medical science and natural methods explained by health researcher and author Gary Null, Ph.D., in No More Diabetes: A Complete Guide to Preventing, Treating, and Overcoming Diabetes.

Applying a “both” rather than an “either” approach illuminates the importance of recognizing the ways our thoughts, emotions and lifestyle choices can impact chronic illness and long-term health.

Naturally Control Blood Sugar

Glucose, the human body’s key source of cellular energy, is the end product of the digestive system breaking down carbohydrates, proteins and fats for absorption in the intestines. From there, it passes into the bloodstream. Glucose also supplies energy for the brain. Normal blood glucose levels vary throughout the day. For healthy individuals, a fasting blood sugar level upon awakening is less than 100 milligrams (mg) per deciliter (dl) of blood. Before meals, normal levels are 70 to 99 mg/dl; otherwise, 100 to 125. According to the American Diabetes Association, 8.1 million of the 29.1 million individuals diagnosed with diabetes were previously unaware of any early symptoms such as dry mouth, excessive thirst, frequent urination, constant hunger (even after meals), unusual weight gain or loss and lack of energy. “Many individuals only learn of their condition from a doctor-ordered routine blood test such as the A1C glycated hemoglobin procedure, which reads blood sugar levels over a three-month period,” advises Dr. Nancy Iankowitz, a boardcertified family nurse practitioner and founding director of Holistic and Integrative Healing, in Holmes, New York.

They feasted when food was available and fasted during famines, sometimes going several days without eating,” advises Baccellieri, who notes that intermittent fasting can be done one day a week.

“Our biochemistry actually does very well with this approach, which isn’t hard to do when your last meal is at 7 p.m. and you skip breakfast and delay lunch the next day until 1 p.m.

hanksgiving side dishes continue to evolve, even though traditional entrées still hold pride of place.

New, lighter alternatives to time-honored stuffing maximize flavorful dried fruits, herbs and nuts. Healthy options may use gluten-free bread or black rice, cauliflower, chestnuts or pecans for flavor, bulk and color. A stuffing can also fill a halved acorn squash or cored apple.

According to renowned health authority Dr. Joseph Mercola, pecans contain more than 19 vitamins and minerals, including anti-inflammatory magnesium, heart-healthy oleic acid, phenolic antioxidants and immune-

boosting manganese. Erica Kannall, a registered dietitian in Spokane, Washington, and a certified health and fitness specialist with the American College of Sports Medicine, likes dried fruits because they contribute antioxidants and fiber.

Celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito, of New York City, salutes his Italian heritage with chestnuts and embraces healthy living with millet and mushrooms in his special stuffing. His new book Rocco’s Healthy + Delicious includes healthy takes on Thanksgiving dishes such as a sugar-free cranberry sauce.

Sonnet Lauberth, a certified holistic health coach, blogger and cookbook author in Seattle, created a healthy stuffing she loves. “My Grain-Free Sage and Pecan Dressing is one of my favorite dishes to bring to gatherings because it works with a variety of diets,” she says. “It’s gluten-, dairy- and grain-free, paleo and vegan. The pecans can be omitted for a nut-free version.” Riced cauliflower is the base, which is available prepackaged at some groceries, but can be made at home simply by chopping the florets into rice-kernel-size pieces. “Cauliflower is the perfect base for this recipe, as it adds a nice texture in place of bread and provides extra fiber,” she says.

Laurie Gauguin, a personal chef in the San Francisco Bay area, specializes in gluten-free dishes that she prepares in clients’ homes. “Anything that will hold its shape and not crumble too much can work as a stuffing base,” she says. “Gluten-free, somewhat sticky grains, like short grain brown rice, Chinese black rice, millet or soft-cooked quinoa work well.”

“Choose a mixture that contrasts with the texture and color of the food you’re stuffing,” advises Gauguin. “I created a stuffing that has crunchy pecans, tender black rice and chewy, dried cranberries to contrast with the creaminess of the cored squash entrée.

A stuffing that everyone can eat is ideal for a holiday gathering, either to serve or bring. Lauberth observes, “While not always possible, it’s nice if the host can accommodate various dietary concerns and preferences. Bring your own hearty side dish or two so that you have enough to make a meal for yourself if needed.”

Healthy Holiday Stuffing Recipe Rocco DiSpirito’s Stuffing

Transfer the vegetable mix to the same mixing bowl as the millet and mushrooms.

Yields: 8 servings 1 Tbsp grapeseed oil ¼ cup millet 1 lb crimini mushrooms, sliced 1 large onion, diced 3 stalks celery, diced 1 medium carrot, diced 4 chestnuts, chopped 1 Tbsp fresh sage, chopped 1½ Tbsp poultry seasoning 3 scoops Rocco’s Protein Powder Plus 2 egg whites 1¾ cups low sodium chicken or vegetable stock Kosher or sea salt and freshly ground pepper

Heat a large, safe, nonstick pan over medium heat and use it to sweat the onions, celery and carrots until tender and translucent, about 10 minutes.

Add the chestnuts, sage, poultry seasoning, protein powder, egg whites and chicken stock to the large mixing bowl, and then use a rubber spatula to mix well, so that no lumps are visible.

Carefully remove the cast iron pan from the oven, and then pour stuffing batter into it. Popping occurs as the outside batter develops a crust.

hen stretching feels fabulous and is relaxing, why is it so tough for people to do?

Stretching results in many benefits, and is mandatory for successful aging.

The simple principle behind stretching is to re-align the muscle tissue that has just been used and potentially abused during exercise or activity. Using muscles during an exercise or activity involves the constant contraction of muscle tissue for the duration. In order for that tissue to maintain its flexibility, it is of the utmost importance that you stretch it back into its alignment with all the muscle fibers that have been compromised.

Years of not stretching can create a dramatic effect: a client that played tennis in his youth and never stretched afterwards can no longer straighten his knees. This leads to strain on the lower back, a tilted pelvis, shortness in height and a multitude of other problems and

pains. Fixing the problem at this stage is not impossible, but highlights the importance of stretching because the damage done will show up years later and be much more difficult to repair.

Studies have shown that in most cases, stretching before exercise really does not offset injury during exercise itself. In other words, once you warm up for the exercise, you are ready to go. However, it is critical that stretching takes place afterwards—once the exercise is completed—to re-align the tissue. The recommended duration of each static (held in one position without movement) stretch is 20 to 30 seconds. Ballistic stretching, or bouncing stretching, is never advised unless under direct supervision.

When in the middle of a stretch, close your eyes and breathe. Inhale through the nose and exhale

STATIC What it is: Hold a stretch in a challenging, but not painful position, for 10 to 30 seconds until feeling discomfort; once this is felt, the muscle then releases and relaxes.

PASSIVE What it is: Employ an outside force such as a stretching device, strap or another’s body weight such as a trainer, physical therapist or massage therapist, which assists the stretch while the individual remains passive.

The targeted muscles are not actively engaged. Examples include postworkout stretches applying pressure with a body part, towel or other prop or piece of equipment.

Benefit: Improves flexibility.

ACTIVE (aka Static Active) What it is: Engage and contract the muscle group opposite the one being stretched to initiate the stretch; repeat. Many yoga poses are examples of active stretching.

Allow the body to relax into the stretch; muscle tissue is more inclined to let go when relaxed, and long deep breaths help with this. It only takes three to four deep breaths to complete a stretch.

Stretching is not just to follow exercise, though that is typically what it is used for. A full body stretch after a good night’s sleep always feels good. If you are a handicrafter of any sort, such as a needle-pointer or knitter, stretching will help with shoulder, hand and forearm issues. Sitting too long in a car or at a desk gives us the sense that we need to stand up and stretch, which we should do at least every hour or two. And, now-adays with the over use of cell phones and handheld devices, our necks are getting abused and all the muscles in the back of the neck are getting over-stretched, forcing the head to list farther forward. When we are older, that will become quite a problem, not just for our necks, but for our entire posture. and reduces post-workout soreness and fatigue.

DYNAMIC What it is: Use controlled, gradual movements and stretches that involve repeated range of motion moves, especially in relation to a specific activity or sport that will follow the warm-up.

Benefit: Prepares the body for activity and warms the muscles; especially advantageous after static stretches.

November 15 is America Recycles Day. How is Rhode Island doing when it comes to recycling, and how can we do better?

T

he Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC) manages the state’s recycling facilities, tracks recycling data and takes action to improve the numbers.

The Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) recycling rate is the state’s simplest measure of recycling effectiveness. Rates are calculated by dividing the total tons of common recyclables (materials placed in household bins) sent to RIRRC’s Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) by the total of these tons plus the tons of trash delivered to RIRRC to be buried in the landfill.

RIRRC automatically collects these numbers when city or town trucks cross their scales. By law, all municipal recycling and trash must be delivered to RIRRC. 2016 MRF recycling data show the top performing municipalities to be Middletown (39.2%) and South Kingstown (38.9%). At the bottom are Providence (8.6%) and Johnston (11.3%).

RIRRC recently partnered with Recycle Across America (RAA), a nonprofit that developed the first standardized recycling label in the country. Rhode Island became the first state in the country to adopt RAA’s standardized recycling bin labels. The labels show what can be recycled and clarifies the categories: paper and cardboard; milk and juice cartons; cans, lids and foil; glass bottles and jars; and plastic containers.

After the labels began making their way onto bins across the state, RIRRC and RAA created the Let’s Recycle Right! campaign, which began on July 31 of this year and ends on November 30. As part of the campaign, 390,000

households received bilingual recycling guidelines in the mail, designed to provide the most basic instructions.

Any group, seeking to establish or improve a recycling or composting program, can request a visit from an RIRRC staff member to help develop strategies and action plans for reducing waste.

RIRRC provides technical assistance and waste assessments to schools, businesses, institutions and housing communities at no cost.

Bins with the new labels have been placed in school classrooms, and RI’s recycling super hero, MaxMan, travels around to schools giving educational presentations to groups of 50 or more children. An RIRRC educator is available to present to grade 4 and up. Krystal Noiseux, RIRRC’s education and outreach manager states, “The kids can be part of the solution by ensuring that only what should be going into the school recycling bins actually goes into the school recycling bins, while adults on the school staff can arrange to get the other supportive logistics in order.”

Once classroom recycling is running smoothly, schools can begin to think about tackling school cafeteria food container recycling and eventually meal waste management.

Keep America Beautiful created a competition called Recycle-Bowl, a four-week-long competition in which schools collected and tracked cans, bottles and paper. According to the competition data, 4.5 million pounds of recyclables were collected during Recycle-Bowl in 2012; participating schools reported per capita recycling rates that were four times the national average reported by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

Then this year, Keep America Beautiful began collaborating with the Environmental Research and Education Foundation (EREF) to quantify food waste in K-12 schools. The partnership supports EREF’s School Cafeteria Discards Assessment Project (SCrAP), a national program that quantifies food waste in school cafeterias. EREF will help raise awareness of the RecycleBowl program by emphasizing the food waste category of the competition.

Monitor Winter Moths

Online Recycle-Bowl competition instructions guide schools in developing and implementing systems for tracking and reporting recycling and waste data.

When asked about cafeteria waste recycling, Noiseux commented, “There are some major barriers to cafeteria recycling in many of the schools, and a school needs to make sure they’ve got the recycling foundations right first, before attempting that.” Students, teachers, school administrators, janitorial staff and hauling providers must all work together to create a successful recycling program.

Additional collaboration with food service providers is critical for expanding into cafeteria waste recycling.

Rhode Island’s Central Landfill may run out of space within the next 20 years. Recycling more plastic and glass and diverting tons of food and other organic material from the landfill annually will help extend this timeline. Additionally, the state is starting to explore future options, including new technology that can turn Rhode Island waste into energy and adopting “zero waste” objectives.

Presently, the best way to solve this waste management challenge is to recycle together and recycle right.

inter moths are one of our newer imported invasive pests, traveling around the U.S.A. in a relentless march looking for food. Their caterpillars will eat almost any available vegetation, but they do have their favorites such as oak, maple and apple.

Adult females climb up trees (they can’t fly) in late fall and winter and wait for males (they can fly) to come and fertilize them. Eggs are laid in groups and gradually mature to caterpillars. Eggs are green when laid in bark cracks, lichen, and other areas, and turn reddy brown and then blue when they hatch. They hatch as very small pests and immediately begin to feed voraciously. In fact, their feeding rate is matched only by their growth rate.

The feasting continues until they’ve almost stripped the host plant, and then they drop silken threads to catch the wind and take them to new food sources. They continue this process and will even crawl through grass to find new food until they pupate in April to June, at which time they go into the soil, spin a cocoon and start the cycle all over again.

Methods to control these pests

vary. One is to place proprietary sticky bands around the trunks of trees to catch moths or the eventual caterpillars. This can work quite well and is non-toxic and easy for home owners to do themselves.

Masses of mating moths can be treated with plant oil insecticides to control the breeding as it is happening. This takes precise timing and may be difficult for many homeowners.

The emerging caterpillars are controlled during leaf out by spraying with Bt. K., a natural Bacillus bacteria that when used with neem oil, stops them feeding and kills them by attacking their internal digestive system. This method almost always needs the use of professional equipment and application techniques.

Plant oils can also be used to smother the eggs but is often difficult to apply.

issa Rankin wears many hats: physician, mystic, author, artist, speaker and blogger. What unites her many pursuits is a passion for helping people optimize their health and understand how science and spirituality converge toward that goal.

A former obstetrician and gynecologist, Rankin is the founder of the Whole Health Medicine Institute, in San Francisco, which trains doctors in mind-body-spirit medicine. She’s authored six books to date, including the bestseller Mind over Medicine, The Fear Cure and The Anatomy of a Calling. She lives in California’s Marin County and blogs at LissaRankin.com.

What common signs indicate that fear is affecting our health?

When people are sick, there is almost always an element of fear. Many of us have “ridden shotgun” at one time or another with a health diagnosis, and that’s scary, so even if it’s not predisposing the illness itself, it can stimulate fear. Studies from institutions such as the Harvard School of Public Health and Carnegie Mellon University have discovered strong correlations between fear, stress and anxiety and health issues.

When fear is predisposing us to illness, addressing the root cause of the issue is preventive medicine.

Whether triggered by something trivial or real, fear activates the “fight-or-flight” stress response in the brain.

The body has natural self-healing mechanisms, but these only operate when our nervous system is relaxed, so effectively dealing with fear is foundationally critical to wellness.

How can we distinguish between true and false fear?

True fear is an actual threat to physical survival, like being approached by someone wielding a gun. However, most fear is generated by a story we make up in our minds. Our wild imaginations, the source of beautiful creativity, can be a destructive force, too, as we envision all kinds of worst-case scenarios, most of which will not come true.

Modern-day humans average more than 50 stress responses a day, which indicates we’re way off track in our relationship to fear. The mind constantly strategizes how to get what it wants and avoid what it doesn’t. A spiritual practice can help interrupt the “monkey mind” constantly ruminating on what could go wrong.

Paying attention to fear around practical issues like not being able to pay bills is helpful because it can keep us from being reckless, such as buying an unneeded luxury item although our mortgage payment looms. But letting false fear prevent us from following a

dream, ending an unhealthy relationship or leaving a toxic job can predispose us to illness. Fear is the emotional equivalent of pain in the body. Attend to it when it arises; try to understand what it is telling you and see what’s in need of healing.

What are some effective ways to defang false fear?

Ultimately, we need to come into the right relationship with uncertainty; it’s the gateway to possibility. People often think that fear provides protection, when our intuition, which typically requires a relaxed state of mind, is a far more effective protector. There have been studies about doctors following their hunches to a patient’s underlying condition, leading to life-saving diagnoses.

How can we cultivate courage, curiosity and resilience, rather than feed our fears?

Cultivating a spiritual practice such as mindfulness helps put a pause between a feeling like fear and the reaction that might ensue. You learn to sit with uncomfortable feelings and recognize the story you are spinning in your mind about what’s happening. It also means letting go of expectations when things don’t go as planned.

Fear is my cue to activate a practice of surrender; to turn something over to the universe. I will also ask for help to calm my heart and let go of attachments. For me, this life-changing practice means I now trust the mystery more than my mind. I trust the unknown more than science and logic.

The latter may be useful tools when doing taxes or a research paper, but I don’t trust them to be the best navigation system of my life or help me in a crisis.

Psychology isn’t enough to address fear, which comes with the territory if you think that we are just flesh robots programmed to maximize self-interest, alone in a hostile universe. Once you learn to see the possibilities and hand over the wheel to a greater, benign organizing intelligence, something unwinds in the nervous system and we relax into the wonder of mystery.
