ay is my favorite month for so many reasons. Lilacs, Cinco De Mayo, my last month working in corporate America, my birthday and our women’s health issue are only just a few. It seems to hold so much promise of warmer days, fresh vegetables, cook outs and good times!

I’ve been finding great wisdom in a book I’m reading: Fear Less: Living Beyond Fear, Anxiety, Anger and Addiction by Dean Sluyter. On the outside, others see me as super calm and relaxed, but on the inside, my stomach is often in a ball of anxiety. Over nothing really; just the scads of life’s little things that worry isn’t going to change anyway (although I convince myself that my worrying keeps everything in line.)

In the book, Sluyter talks about a scene in the movie Bridge of Spies between a lawyer, played by Tom Hanks, and his client who is a convicted spy. As they prepare for trial, realizing the client will most likely get the death sentence, Hanks asks him how he is not worked up about his impending doom. The reply, “Would it help?” delivered without emotion, was profound. With many different ways of looking at the futileness of worry, at the end of the day, those three little words really struck me. With that kind of wisdom, I’m hoping to match my outer and inner Zen more often.

Over the years, I’ve learned there is a connection between how I feel mentally and how my body feels. The better care I take of my health, the better food choices, along with proper rest and exercise, the stronger my mind feels as well. This issue is packed with some great resources on how to do just that. Our article “Personalized Health Care,” on page 22, talks about how functional medicine is becoming more mainstream. By looking at the whole person, it looks to address the cause of illness rather than just treating the symptom. With the advanced technology we now have at our disposal, even our genes can be taken into account to find the best possible treatment for an individual’s mind, body and soul.

Look to “Five Reasons to Love a Cat,” on page 36, if you’re searching for another way to take care of yourself. I have entire conversations with my cats; they are great listeners, seldom interrupt and don’t judge. Studies confirm what many of us have known all along: having a household pet keeps us healthier and happier; making it likely we’ll live longer and enjoy it more. Plus it seems to be good for the cats. What’s not to like?

Mother’s Day Special at Fresh Face

he Concordia Center for Spiritual Living, in Warwick, will host What is Diversity & Inclusion?, a workshop facilitated by Ellen Suazo, currently serving on the Diversity Commission for the Centers for Spiritual Living (CSL).

Full Weekend Workshop on the Spine

A

four-workshop weekend to explore the embryology of the spine, its role in our earliest developmental patterns, and how its fluid origins and many movement possibilities allow us to find a dynamic sense of alignment in any position will take place on May 19 and 20, at body kneads yoga, in Cranston.

From 10am to noon, May 19 workshop facilitator Amy Matthews will lead an asana class. Then, from 1:30 to 5pm, she will present Embryology & Anatomy of the Spine, exploring how a calm quiet spine can still be fluid, moveable and responsive.

Then on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., explore the reflexes and developmental patterns that underlie our earliest movements as babies —rolling, flexing and extending, and side bending—and see where these patterns are still present as a support for adult movements.

The final workshop taking place from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., will give participants a chance to ask questions about statements on anatomy, asana and alignment.

Matthews will talk about some commonly made statements about asana and anatomy, for example “straighten the spine to twist” or “keeping your knee over your ankle keeps it safe”, and share her analysis of the underlying assumptions that are sometimes mistaken about how the body works.

Matthews, CMA, IDME, BMC Teacher, RSMT/RSME has been teaching movement since 1994. She is a Body-Mind Centering teacher, a certified Laban Movement Analyst, an Infant Developmental Movement Educator and a movement therapist and yoga teacher. She co-authored with Leslie Kaminoff on the best-selling book Yoga Anatomy, and now has partnered with Sarah Barnaby to create Babies Project, a space in New York City dedicated to developmental movement for babies of all ages.

Community Gathering at the Children’s Friend Walk

n May 5, there’s only one event that delivers fresh air, exercise, a free Panera lunch and a morning full of community connection—the Children’s Friend 5K Walk and Run sponsored

by Panera Bread at Roger Williams Park Temple to Music. Now in its 16th year, this dog-friendly community gathering brings families, volunteers and supporters together to raise funds for Children’s Friend, Rhode Island’s first child-serving nonprofit agency. It’s an inspiring morning of community, great food, family activities, live music and special performances.

Some supporters that walk have a personal connection to the agency. “I walk because many years ago I was adopted through a Children’s Friend program. Now, I walk with my own children,” shares Brenda Owren, a Children’s Friend supporter. “Children’s Friend gave two families an opportunity to have a fulfilling life. My biological mother was able to finish school, obtain a degree and have a career, and my adopted parents were able to bring a baby into their lives. My experience with Children’s Friend guided me to foster and adopt two children of my own. I look forward to bringing my children to this year’s walk.”

Everyone is welcome to come out and support the program’s good work, while having a great time. This is a major fundraiser for the programs and services of an organization which has been a part of the Rhode Island landscape since 1834. In 2017, more than 36,300 individuals received services from Children’s Friend.

he Providence Flea finished its indoor season in April and is now gearing up for its return outdoors starting on June 3, on the Providence River Greenway across from 345 South Water Street, in downtown Providence.

In a survey of 171 midlife American women, more than 80 percent reported using complementary and alternative medicine, Albert Einstein College of Medicine researchers discovered. The most common choice was herbal teas, followed by women’s vitamins, flaxseed, glucosamine and soy supplements. Only 34 percent of the nonHispanic white women and 14 percent of the Hispanic women discussed it with their doctors.

Seniors Eating Mediterranean Diet Retain Independence Seniors that ate a Mediterranean diet high in vegetables, fruit, whole grains, nuts and legumes were able to live independently longer, had fewer falls and fractures, and were less frail, according to recent research. In a study published in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society, University College London researchers analyzed the eating habits and health data of 5,789 participants in studies in France, Spain, Italy and China. “People that followed the Mediterranean diet the most were overall less than half as likely to become frail over a nearly four-year period compared with those that followed it the least,” says lead author Katy Walters, Ph.D. The researchers also noted that the plant-based diet may help older people maintain muscle strength, activity, weight and energy levels.

Rhode Island passed house resolution H804 recognizing May 17, 2018, as Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) Day. DIPG is the deadliest childhood brain tumor, but there is hope for progress in finding a cure by raising awareness, supporting expanded research, developing effective treatments and providing comprehensive care for children and their families.

For more than 40 years, treatment for DIPG (radiation) has remained the same, with no improvement in prognosis. In the past few years, however, better medical technology and increased access to tumor tissue have enabled researchers to make advances in the understanding of this disease. With federal grant money being scarce for rare pediatric diseases, progress in understanding DIPG has been funded primarily by private foundations, such as DefeatDIPG.org, TheCureStartsNow.org, DIPG. org, SmashingWalnuts.org, and many others created by parents that lost children to the disease.

Inflammation May Link Gum Disease to Other Illnesses Comprehensive daily oral care includes brushing after meals, flossing twice a day and routine dental visits to avoid gum disease. Now, not only dentists, but also physicians understand the importance of maintaining oral health in an effort to keep the rest of the body healthy. Ongoing research studies, including one published by the American Society for Microbiology entitled Systemic Diseases Caused by Oral Infection, suggest a link between periodontal disease and other systemic inflammatory disorders, including heart disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and some cancers. Scientists are finding that chronic inflammation is most likely the link connecting gum disease with many systemic health problems.

Inflammation is the body’s instinctive reaction to fight infection and to prevent injury. The inflammatory response initially heals the body, but then can lead to severe complications. According to Scott Fertik, DDS, a periodontist in Providence, periodontal disease is a classic example of such a disorder. While plaque accumulation is still a factor in the progression of gum disease, researchers suspect that swollen, bleeding gums, recession and bone loss near the teeth may be caused by the chronic inflammation response to the bacterial infection rather than from the bacteria itself.

If gum disease develops, a periodontal consultation is in order. Periodontists are dentists with three additional years of surgical training in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the gums and oral cavity.

Yoga Soothes the Blues Taking a 90-minute hatha yoga class twice a week for eight weeks steadily lowered symptoms of depression in all 20 men and women with mild to moderate forms of clinical depression that participated in a recent University of California, San Francisco, study. Another 18 depressed adults attending an attention control class for the same period of time, afterwards had somewhat lower depression scores overall, but less than half the improvement, plus they showed greater mood fluctuation.

The British supermarket chain Iceland is planning to eliminate or drastically reduce plastic packaging for more than 1,000 of its house-label products by the end of 2023, switching to paper-based trays instead.

Nigel Broadhurst, joint managing director of Iceland, explains that the typical ready meal was packaged in a particularly bad way. “It is currently in a black plastic tray. That black plastic is the worst possible option in terms of toxins going into the ground and the ability to recycle that product.” He also notes that instead of the usual plastic bag, grocers could put netting around a bunch of apples the same as with oranges.

Iceland’s research found that 80 percent of shoppers would endorse a supermarket’s move to go plastic-free.

Locals Prevail Against Bristol Bay Mine

Alaskan mining critics cheered the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency decision to maintain an existing policy not to permit the Northern Dynasty Minerals’ Pebble copper and gold mine in Bristol Bay. They maintain that the project’s toxic byproducts would threaten fisheries and other natural resources.

Alannah Hurley, with United Tribes of Bristol Bay, a group opposing the mine, has said that members of the tribes she represents are willing to lie down in front of bulldozers to protect the waters. She notes, “Ideally, we would like these [protections] finalized, and the battle to protect Bristol Bay from the Pebble Mine and mines like Pebble is far from over. But the fact that these protections remain in place and can be used within the process is a very positive step in the effort to protect the Bristol Bay watershed for generations to come.”

Recycled Plastic Transforms into Prosthetics The emerging technology of three-dimensional (3-D) printing can benefit the world in many ways.

Re:Purpose for Good, in Australia, creates robotically 3-D printed prosthetic devices from recycled plastic and e-waste. It’s difficult to customize prosthetics, so more invasive surgery is often needed to make standard sizes fit the patient. Other companies produce 3-D printed prosthetic hands and arms, but Re:Purpose for Good customizes both hands and feet at a much lower cost.

The company’s robotics and prosthetics engineer Gerardo Montoya, who had been working on 3-D printing prosthetics for children in Mexico, merged the idea with a desire to do something about the 8 million tons of plastic entering the oceans. Along with plastic waste, they also use e-waste such as discarded smartphones that have all the circuitry and microprocessors needed for advanced features. The company even plans to teach their prosthetic-making process to children as part of their science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) curriculum, so they can learn 3-D printing skills.

They’re making it open source so more people can get involved without patent restrictions.

Ants or Termites?

by David Jones When swarming flying ants are seen, it’s important to determine whether they are ants or termites. The damage done by ants can be extensive, but termites can be much worse. Termites eat cellulose in wood, while ants chew the wood to make nests.

Termites are very social but quite shy. They like to remain hidden from daylight and are therefore white bodied and soft. So why do we see them looking like black flying ants? Every year as the weather warms, a few sunny days trigger the termites into morphing into their reproductive stage. At this point, black or dark brown termites with long silver wings appear and come out of Swarming Termites there tunnels to find a mate and breed. Most are unsuccessful and hundreds of dead or dying termites can be seen.

On examination, termites look as if they have only two body parts, but, in fact, they have three, just like ants although it’s difficult to see their waist. Termite swarmers and ant swarmers do not eat or chew wood for nests; they have one function only and that is to reproduce. Ant swarmers come in many different sizes and can be quite a nuisance.

It is imperative that ants or termites are not ignored.

The cost of treatment for termites is much higher than that of ants, so make sure that they are correctly identified. Ants have three distinct body parts and unequal wings. Termites appear to have two body parts and very long equal sized wings.

Both can easily be controlled by using safe, non-toxic plant and natural mineral treatments that won’t put humans, pets or the environment at risk. Safe treatments are readily available and work just as effectively as the toxic chemicals.

udley Evenson didn’t set out to devise a strategy to foster constructive, nurturing communications between parents and their offspring.

Yet as she and her husband, Dean, raised their three children decades ago, timeless guiding principles emerged.

“We were like other parents—learning and growing along with our children,” says Evenson, a certified professional life coach, musician and co-founder of the instrumental recording label Soundings of the Planet (Soundings.com), in Bellingham, Washington. “Then, in the early 1980s, I met Joshua Halpern, who wanted to include our perspectives and techniques in his book, Children of the Dawn: Visions of the New Family.”

So she shared her way of cultivating kind, caring and empathetic youngsters that has worked for two generations of

her family: “Our role is not to impose our beliefs on children and grandchildren, but to guide and help them develop their dreams, visions, paths and passions.”

Other experts agree.

Stay Clear. Evenson contends that

children are often mirrors of the surrounding moods and attitudes, so our example is paramount. “Children absorb our feelings and emotions,” says Melanie Hogin, a social worker who counsels foster families in greater Nashville.“‘Transference’ is its textbook term. Stay calm and clear when you are around children, and keep the lines of communication open.”

Be Consistent. Evenson maintains, “Mom and Dad or the primary parental figures should try to establish a unified, mutually supportive program.”

Historical Overview

New Standard of Care

During the last 25 years, a less drug-based grassroots model for dealing with chronic illnesses in the U.S. has emerged. First labeled holistic, the movement gained momentum as alternative approaches morphed into being considered complementary to conventional medicine, warranting studies by the National Institutes of Health. Responding to public interest, an integrative model of care that focuses on the whole person has taken root in medical institutions such as the Cleveland Clinic, in Ohio.

The latest evolution to a systemsoriented, patient-focused clinical model of functional medicine, which seeks to address causes of illness, rather than simply treat symptoms, has been garnering increasing interest by the public and pioneering medical professionals. It’s now maturing into personalized functional medicine.

One of the best-prepared, traditionally trained medical professionals in explaining this approach is Jeffrey S. Bland, Ph.D., recognized as the father of functional medicine, and author of The Disease Delusion: Conquering the Causes of Chronic Illness for a Healthier, Longer and Happier Life.

He co-founded, with his wife, Susan, the Institute for Functional Medicine, in Washington, which provides a system geared to understanding the complexity of chronic illness and design individualized programs for more effective healing.

The National Human Genome Research Institute, in Bethesda, Maryland, maintains that an evolved approach to medicine starts with using an individual’s genetic profile to determine the best path to preventing, diagnosing and treating diseases. By 2003, scientists had delivered the first essentially complete sequence and map of all the genes in the human body.

Three decades ago, the medical fraternity had few reliable explanations for the origins of chronic health issues. Today, accepted factors include predispositions for a specific disease related to an individual’s genome, along with contemporary epigenetic influences such as nutrition, environment and lifestyle.

None of these elements, however, necessarily define our destiny.

“This genomic personalized medicine approach is creating friends among all healing arts practitioners because it facilitates our using information to design a less-toxic environment, lifestyle, diet and treatment to meet an individual’s specific needs and particular circumstances that led to a disease,” says Bland.

“Diseases are only names assigned to a collection of symptoms,” says Bland. “They don’t indicate how the individual became afflicted. If 10 patients with Type 2 diabetes each had epigenetic variations that triggered getting the condition, it would be unwise to treat them all the same; it’s far better to treat those factors that specifically led to the disease.”

Addressing the concern that genetic test results might be used to deny someone health insurance, Bland notes, “This is a significant misunderstanding about genetic testing. Our genes don’t tell us how we are going to die. They tell us how we should live. Understanding how our genes can help us live to 100 is a model of enlightenment. Those that practice this systems biology approach are counting on functional personalized medicine becoming the updated standard of care.”

Nutrigenomics The Next Step in Personalized Medicine

any people blame their genes for having an increase risk to a disease because it “runs in the family”, or not gaining weight after eating a lot of fried foods, because “it’s in my genes”. What if we could impact our genes by changing our actions, such as changing the foods we eat or making environmental/ lifestyle changes rather than basing our outcomes on what was given to us at birth?

This change could have a greater impact on how we prevent and treat diseases and is the next step in personalizing medicine.

What is Nutrigenomics?

Nutrigenomics is a field of science intersecting personalized nutrition with genetics and is the future of individualized healthcare. It examines how our food intake affects our genes function and how our genes respond to certain nutrients. In addition, there is epigenetics which considers how our environment, exercise and other lifestyle changes affect gene expression.

According to the UC Davis NCHMD Center of Excellence for Nutritional Genomics, there are five tenets of nutrigenomics, which can be summarized as: n Diet can be a serious risk factor for a number of diseases; n Common dietary chemicals can act on the human genome to alter gene activity 24

or gene structure; n How much someone’s diet dictates whether they’re healthy or sick may depend on an individual’s genetic makeup; n Some genes that are regulated by diets— and even their normal, common variants—likely play a role in the onset and progression of chronic diseases, along with how severe they become; and n Using a personalized approach to a person’s diet, based on their nutritional requirements, nutritional status and their genotype can prevent, mitigate or even cure chronic disease.

Weight Loss Without Dieting Hypnosis at Thought Alchemy

lthough each person’s results will vary, certain things can be expected from weight loss hypnosis at Thought Alchemy.

First, according to owner and hypnotist Rose Siple, the body is designed to eliminate excess and knows what is best for it if an individual knows how to observe and tune into the messages being sent. One of the most powerful results from this process is that the body’s biological mechanism will reset itself when void of conditioning and emotional programming, and individuals will begin to eat to live, instead of living to eat.

When no longer on the diet roller coaster, the body begins to reclaim itself and thoughts like “I shouldn’t have that” or “I should stay away from that food,” go away.

The most common thing clients state is that the bad or harmful foods that used to draw them no longer have the pull. The result: slow, gradual weight loss that is lasting.

The body, through the subconscious mind, begins to seek better health, with re-routed and re-calibrated neural pathways, directing the individual to seek different ways to relieve stress, boredom, worry and the numerous other stressors that trigger comfort eating. As a result, the biological mechanism begins to guide individuals toward healthier food choices. Often people that have had an aversion to vegetables and fruits, or foods they were raised upon, begin to seek them out. Throughout the process, individuals will be taught observational skills geared toward understanding the way the subconscious mind responds to events.

With this new awareness, combined with a process that takes individuals forward without dependence on the hypnotist, the clients’ session recordings cover about 85 percent of the weight loss issues in their life. They learn to see more clearly when a life event is triggering an old eating behavior and a means to resolving it on their own if an old pattern begins to resurface. Sustaining the change is critical and will last if the new neural pathway is appropriately anchored with the subconscious mind.

Success is in each individual’s hands by working with the program and listening appropriately to the session recordings as instructed until anchored, and then observing events to see where potentially new life events are triggering old patterns or the formation of new patterns. Turning to the recordings to help get through trigger events, such as the holidays or a family event, will help people to remap the pat-

tern. There are also sessions to help when encountering a new life event.

The process does not work by magic; client participation and cooperation are critical. The understanding of how the mind works, how a pattern is formed and how triggers fire off bad habits is critical. Typically anywhere from three to six sessions are needed, however, each individual is different.

Along with hypnosis, some individuals need help with changing diet or incorporating exercise into their regimen. If life is chaotic and stressful, sometimes it is necessary to tackle that before success with food will occur.

Without a doubt, Thought Alchemy’s process is powerful. It changes one’s approach to food and puts people in the driver’s seat, slowly guiding them to their body’s appropriate balance point. Often, clients will say that they did not realize how effective it was until they were a couple years down the road and still not going off the deep-end on food. HEALING THE HARD STUFF Natural Approaches Resolve Major Illnesses

lthough natural health enthusiasts may recognize alternative healing modalities as a preferred approach to treatment, in the face of major health issues, even they tend to join the crowd that’s turning first to conventional medicine.

Thus, many gentler modalities described in The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, co-authored by doctors of naturopathy Michael T. Murray and Joseph Pizzorno, remain largely untapped resources. Ignored because they are unsupported by traditional sciencebased medicine, holistic measures such as acupuncture, energy medicine, essential oils, herbs, detoxification, health-promoting diets, homeopathy, prayer and meditation, supplementation, yoga, massage and naturopathy are sacrificed in favor of often painful medical procedures and prescription drugs which can’t claim to permanently cure anything and can have many harmful side effects.

“A patient that dabbles in holistic medicine for minor health issues such as indigestion, headache or insomnia often turns to conventional methods after receiving a serious diagnosis such as diabetes, heart disease or cancer because they are scared,” observes holistic physician Dr. Wendy Warner, medical director of Medicine in Balance, in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. The co-author of Boosting Your Immunity for Dummies suggests that relatively few people turn to natural solutions for both preventive and therapeutic measures because they’re unaware they exist.

Integrative oncologists and endocrinologists that are aware of the benefits of natural complementary methods are scarce. Relatively few conventional doctors are educated in functional medicine. “Yet complementary modalities such as acupuncture, massage and some essential oils can support the immune system and help an individual deal with stress experienced from coping with their illness,” says Warner.

Rob Wergin, an experienced energy medicine practitioner, speaks from experience regarding clients that consult him for lifethreatening diagnoses. “When I see them, they’re desperate and have exhausted all conventional methods. I’m their lastditch effort,” remarks Wergin. The most frequent reason he hears is, “My family, friends and doctor told me not to waste my money on charlatans.”

“People find it challenging to put faith in natural methods and are nervous about going against a doctor’s advice until they feel or see positive results; even these may not provide sufficient motivation to continue with alternative treatments,” he says.

“I believe this is the result of the influence of pharmaceutical ads promising results, the medical community’s belief in proof solely through clinical trials, websites like Quackwatch. com and well-meaning friends insisting that the conventional route is the only way to go. It’s sad to see the gravity of these influences pulling clients back into solely believing in the Western model of medicine,” says Wergin.

Ann Lee, a doctor of naturopathy, acupuncturist and founder of the Health for Life Clinic, Inc., in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, notes, “This mindset continues to get reinforced by insurance companies that do not cover alternatives. Paying out of pocket for medical expenses also influences a patient’s choices.”

Kelly Noonan-Gores and Adam Schomer, director and producer, respectively, of the documentary film HEAL, suggest that unconscious conditioning plays the biggest role in an individual’s choices. “We are deeply conditioned to view medical specialists and prestigious medical institutions as the ones with all the answers. Sometimes they do and some-

Resistance to Change

“The conventional medical community wants to maintain the model in which they have heavily invested centuries of time, energy and money. Patients that investigate integrative and complementary medicine may resist hearing that in order to get well, they might need to change their worldview and lifestyle, take a leave of absence from their job, develop a spiritual practice, exercise or maybe even leave a toxic relationship,” says Schomer.

“Conventional medicine says take this pill and keep living your life the same way,” says Schomer. “We are not demonizing doctors, pharmaceuticals or the medical system. We simply believe that individuals are more empowered to heal when they take control of their health.”

Quiet Role Models

Sheila Tucker, a resident of Navarre, Florida, has been a registered nurse for 20 years, practicing in hospital settings such as critical care, emergency and administration. “I know and understand doctors, surgeries and pharmaceutical treatments and hospitals,” says Tucker, who recalls that throughout her life she was taught to believe in a system that suddenly stopped working for her.

Hanaway, the former director of medical education for the Institute for Functional Medicine and the first medical director at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, explains, “Doctors have a rigorous job filled with responsibility.

Change is difficult and investigating vastly different ways of practicing medicine requires a degree of curiosity and openness.

I am heartened by thought leaders and heads of top medical schools who are presently opening up to functional medicine, natural medicine and complementary approaches.”

“The paradigm shift we are ushering in has been 50 years in the making,” assesses Hanaway. “Some medical professionals are immersed in a polar view of right and wrong, offering personal attacks and disparaging comments to maintain control of the dialogue. This is not appreciated by patients who look to the doctor as a teacher—the Latin docere means to teach.

“The movement to change medicine and the cultural paradigm of healing is a marathon, not a sprint, and those of us involved are prepared to stay the course.”

Consistently following a healthy diet and positive lifestyle are important, and health researchers, doctors and midlife women can attest to the multidimensional benefits of exercise. Perks may include reduction of menopausal discomfort, better brain function, stronger bones and reversal of estrogen dominance syndrome that can set the stage for fibroids, cystic breasts, cancer, migraines and weight gain.

Get Moving

Studies of 3,500 women in South and Central America have shown that a more active life reduces hot flashes and night sweats.

The results, published in Menopause, the journal of the North American Menopause Society, reveal that sedentary individuals often experience increased intensity of related symptoms like insomnia and irritability. Aerobic exercise such as regular walking, hiking, swimming or biking might also help the brain produce neurochemicals that are compromised when estrogen levels drop.

Sue Markovitch, author and owner of Clear Rock Fitness, in Columbus, Ohio, recommends aerobic exercise. “I believe our bodies were made to move. One of the amazing gifts of fitness is it’s truly never too late. When we incorporate daily movement in our lives, all the other systems in the body will work more according to plan. Simply taking a daily walk helps balance brain chemistry,” says Markovitch, who specializes in improving fitness levels for women over 40. “Walking is fitness magic, whether it’s on a treadmill, outside or in the pool. Get your heart rate into an aerobic zone, preferably for 30 to 45 minutes. I’ve heard testimony 30

after testimony of improved sleep, less back or joint pain and better mood.” She also suggests adding a few weekly sessions of resistance training to daily walks.

Most health professionals agree that balance is the key. Jeanne D. Andrus, a menopause expert and author of I Just Want to Be ME Again, in Covington, Louisiana, recommends cardio, resistance training and exercise that increases flexibility and core strength.

“For a beginner, this may include two to four days of walking, one to three days of strength training and one to three days of yoga or Pilates, with the goal being three and a half hours of activity per week.”

Of course, all of these need to be at appropriate levels for the woman’s condition and goals,” advises Andrus.

According to studies led by Helen Jones, Ph.D., from the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences at Liverpool John Moores University, UK, three, 30-to-45-minute aerobic sessions a week reduced hot flashes and yielded the most significant results.

Go Easy

While some conventional approaches suggest vigorous exercise, many holistic professionals caution against extremes. “It’s important to individualize, and in my ongoing research it’s clear that the high-intensity strength and sculpting approach so often promoted and perceived as necessary to maintain shape, weight and health is a myth,” says Dr. Eden Fromberg, an obstetrician, gynecologist and founder of Holistic Gynecology New York, in Manhattan.

Instead, Fromberg recommends an integrated approach to exercise that supports connective tissue and joints. While some forms of exercise including yoga are perceived as gentler than others, she warns against an all-or-nothing strategy, noting, “Intense, deep stretching and joint-straining may cause injury more easily during hormonal transition.”

Andrus concurs, “If high cortisol levels are involved and accompanied by insomnia, stress placed on the body by rigorous exercise will increase these levels and actually lower available energy.” She also advises adopting a non-aggressive approach for osteoporosis. “Weight-bearing exercise is a must, but if bone loss is already present, start much more gradually to ensure that bones are protected.”

Lighten Up

Exercise can be more enjoyable than doing chores. Recreational activities such as dancing, biking or hopping on the swings at the playground are fun ways to do something good for both body and spirit.

Menopause can be a time for personal expansion and an invitation for self-care that might have been neglected or postponed. Fromberg believes we can all revitalize our resources at any stage of life, and the years surrounding menopause call for us to tune into ourselves even more. “What seems like a disruption is an opportunity to listen deeply and reimagine and reorganize one’s life on physical, emotional and spiritual levels.”

An Easy Pace to Exercise

xercise has a bad reputation in that people think it has to be tough in order to get anything out of the workout. The truth is, the “no pain, no gain,” attitude has no benefits. Especially for people over 40, lighter and slower is better than fast and hard for getting stronger and more flexible.

Lower weights and a slower pace is the key to maintaining a challenging workout without pushing one’s self too hard. When slower strength training is practiced, heavy weights aren’t needed in order to work hard. The slower pace of the lift doesn’t allow for momentum, and a lighter weight can stress the muscle tissue just as effectively as a heavier weight at a faster pace.

Individuals can get just as strong without stressing connective tissue, or compromising the fascia, tendons, ligaments and joints.

This slower pace can also apply to aerobic exercise. It’s best to build up to a pace where the heart rate is beating faster than normal and exertion is felt, but you can still talk and breathe. Hold that for 30 to 60 minutes.

Exercise doesn’t have to be hard in order to get benefits. Do what is comfortable, and remember to always stretch each muscle group after strengthening it or using it for aerobics to maintain a higher level of flexibility.

Because the flame at the needle’s top consumed enough gas to heat 125 homes, it was replaced in 2000 with a flagpole mast, a beacon for aviators.
