appy 5th Anniversary to Rhode Island Natural Awakenings! Somehow, 5 years has passed and we are going to print with our 60th issue. Publishing a monthly magazine seems to make time go by even faster than it does otherwise. I am writing this letter in August for the September issue to get to print while already thinking about what we will be running in October. I get dizzy sometimes with the “what month is it” syndrome. I have noticed so many changes in these 5 years, both personally and with our wonderful state. Imagine when I started, construction on the Iway had just started and now we travel it like it has always been there. There have been more holistic grass, and the number of people that read Natural Awakenings continues to grow. It feels great to think that Natural Awakenings may have had a place in growing that awareness. Our mission to spread the word about how to live a healthy life, on a healthy planet - it’s happening! Speaking of October, keep your eyes peeled for information about our 5th Anniversary party. We love seeing our like-minded crowd and wouldn’t miss a chance to get us together. The announcement will be in our October issue, which believe it or not is only a month away! In this month’s feature article “Whole Being Workouts,” Lisa Marshall explores a It’s an effective combination that can lead to simultaneous feelings of energy and calmness and just some of the wealth of options we have to get our game on. My favorite exercise has long been walking. It doesn’t get much easier than putting on the sneakers and walking out the door. A broken toe last month was an unfortunate circumstance that led me to not be able to put my sneakers on, and therefore not be able to go for a walk. I’m fortunate to work out with a personal trainer at Dexter Training Concepts (DTC) here in North Providence also, which I was able to do with sandals on for the last few weeks to be able to keep up with some exercise. According to “Staying Power” on page 26, 6.4 million Americans now engage a personal trainer. The trainer keeps me on track; it’s an appointment and a commitment that I don’t want to miss. It feels good to have muscles! The Peace Flag Project in Rhode Island will be celebrating all month long bringing their message of peace and coming together in peaceful celebrations. They expanded it to the whole month with the premise that peace is a big idea, and needs more than a day. Join us in celebrating peace, here now, and all over the world always. As autumn arrives this month I wish you all tranquility as well as excitement in the new season.
Natural Awakenings is printed on recycled newsprint with soybased ink.

“I’ve been describing Brian as a “professional motivator because the term life coach was way too weak to accurately describe what he “turned on in me for me to take action in my own life. The term “life coach in the coaching industry is over used and often describes someone who might be more “soft in his/ her skills/approach giving the impression of coming together for a “love fest versus real dynamic, purposeful change and growth. What I love most about Brian is his energy, force, no nonsense approach that will hold me accountable to my dreams of what’s next for me in my life/business. I might even consider changing my title from executive coach to life force coach! Love it! Jennifer Peterson ( PhD Organizational Psychotherapy, professional coach, MN)

Rejuvenate Summer Skin at Fresh Face
T
he summer always seems to go by so fast; some love the summer and some hate it, but what does summer do to our skin? Many of us love to feel the rays of sunshine on our skin and enjoy the warm temperatures, but unfortunately, both will take a toll on the skin. “Sunblock and sweating will clog the pores and the sun itself will cause other skin issues, such as redness, irritation, dryness, lack of hydration, increase in hyper pigmentation and more,” says Debby Votta, owner of Fresh Face Skin Care Center @ Avalon. “Plus, we may eat and drink a little differently in the summer months, which will also affect the skin.” To rejuvenate the skin, she recommends a “summer” skin rejuvenation treatment that includes double cleansing; steam and exfoliation; pore cleansing; microdermabrasion; vitamin C treatment; hydrating masque; oxygen; a treatment serum; and a treatment cream. Votta is offering the treatment for a discounted price of $65 (regular price is $75) to those who mention Natural Awakenings. Month of Peace in Rhode Island
T
he Peace Flag Project (PFP) is encouraging residents to observe the Month of Peace in Rhode Island during the month of September. Joining PFP in these celebrations are individuals and organizations throughout the state. In 2004, PFP began celebrating the UN International Day of Peace on September 21, a day for the people of the world to focus on peace and to come together in peaceful celebrations, suspending day for ordinary people, not or academics, to join together for a day of harmony. “Here in Rhode Island, we have expanded the Peace Day to Peace Month to give more attention to the organizations, events and people who work for the public good throughout the year. One day just isn’t enough,” says Ginny Fox, executive director of the PFP and organizer of the Month of Peace. “Peace is a big idea and it can be celebrated in many different ways.” The Peace Month calendar includes special peace events For more information, email Info@ThePeaceFlagProject.org or visit ThePeaceFlagProject.org.

Jog or Walk to Live Longer
A
slow jog around the block a few times a week can prolong life. The Copenhagen City Heart Study monitored 1,878 joggers for 30 years and found that 44 percent of these subjects are less likely to prematurely die from any cause than non-runners. Males and females that continued to jog regularly added 6.2 years and 5.6 years, respectively, to their average lifespans. It only takes 1.5 hours of slow-to-average-pace jog-

hree-quarters of American women are interested in changing their hair color, particularly to cover gray, according to a Clairol study. But other studies show they should be wary of most traditional hair dyes and consider natural alternatives. As early as 2007, the European Union banned 22 potentially dangerous chemicals in cosmetic and body care products, including hair dyes. In the journal Materials last year, British researchers warned of the increased cancer risk from toxic chemicals called secondary amines, found in European- and U.S.-manufactured permanent hair dyes, because they remain on the hair for extended periods long after application and can penetrate skin. Meanwhile, increasing demand by consumers for safer products has expanded the market for natural hair dyes containing henna, oils and extracts from berries and other fruits, plus vegetables. Many are now available at pharmacies, organic salons and online, including do-it-yourself recipes.

A
dults’ obsession with antibacterial soaps, toothpastes and other personal care products may be making our children more prone to many allergies, according to research from the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, in Baltimore, Maryland. While not the direct cause, researchers say such products may impair the development of children’s immune systems. In a study of 860 children between the ages of 6 and 18, researchers found elevated levels of immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies in children from households where these products were used. IgEs increase when exposed to allergy-causing substances like pollen, pet dander and certain foods. Urine levels of triclosan, an antibacterial agent used in soaps, mouthwash and toothpaste, provided the strongest link to increased IgE levels and increased allergy risk. Parabens, preservatives with antimicrobial properties commonly found in shampoos, conditioners, lotions and body washes, were strongly associated with allergies to pollen and pet dander. hypothesis” that society’s focus on cleanliness has actually prevented children from getting dirty and developing strong immune systems that are regularly challenged and strengthened by pathogens, say researchers.

eens with acne might consider cutting back on milk and other dairy products. Foods with a high-glycemic index (carbohydrates affecting blood sugar levels) are the leading causes of acne at all ages, according to a metareview of studies and clinical trials published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Now, researchers at New York University say milk’s natural hormones may additionally stimulate the acne-producing hormones present at puberty. “Milk is designed to grow things— namely babies—and in the case of cows’ milk, calves,” comments Dr. Mark Hyman, author of The Blood Sugar Solution. “It’s naturally full of muscle-building anabolic hormones… which [also] cause bad acne.” Hyman considers cows’ milk “nature’s perfect food only if you are a calf,” and warns of “60-some hormones in the average glass of milk; even organic, raw and bovine growthhormone-free milk.”

Bivalve Farming May Purify Fouled Waters Scientists are investigating whether mussels can be grown in urban areas as a way of cleansing coastal waters of sewage, fertilizers and other pollutants. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has placed an experimental raft at the mouth of New York City’s Bronx River with long tendrils seeded with geukensia demissa hanging beneath it. The two-year experiment will test whether the ribbed mussel can survive in tions for cleaning up coastal waters all over the world. The idea of using bivalves like mussels, oysters and clams to purify waterways has been on the minds of conservationists and scientists for decades. If the creatures can absorb enough nitrogen from the polluted water, it will prevent algae blooms that deprive waterways of the oxygen needed to support life. and kelp in conjunction with bivalves to clean coastal waters. Neonicotinoid Pesticides Threaten Birds and Insects, Too Controversial neonicotinoid pesticides linked to catastrophic honeybee declines in North America and Europe may also kill other creatures, posing ecological threats even graver than feared, according to a new report by the American Bird Conservancy. It claims that dangers to birds and stream-dwelling and soil-dwelling insects accidentally exposed to the chemicals have been underestimated by regulators and downplayed by industry. “The environmental persistence of the neonicotinoids, their propensity tion and their cumulative and largely irreversible mode of action in invertebrates raise environmental concerns that go well beyond bees,” according to the report co-authors, pesticide policy expert Cynthia Palmer and pesticide toxicologist Pierre Mineau, Ph.D., note that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency typically sets guidelines for bird exposures using laboratory tests on just two species, which ignores widely varying sensitivities among hundreds of other species. Scott Black, executive director of the Xerces Society, an invertebrate conservation group, says that integrated pest management (IPM), which combines precisely targeted chemical use with other, non-chemical means of pest control, can deliver industrialscale yields in an environmentally sustainable way. To the detriment of wildlife, “[Our nation] has moved away from IPM, from scouting a farm, and spraying only if there’s damage,” he warns. “With neonicotinoids, they don’t do that anymore,” instead returning to indiscriminate blanket spraying. day. They spend the rest of their time in reading or advisory groups. Free of a curriculum designed for all students, teachers can target the learning needs and style of each student who learns at his own pace in the technology-rich environment. School bells don’t rule learning at The Village Green. If an English lesson needs two hours instead of one and science can be done in 30 minutes, why not use the time that way instead of ule? The Village believes students need a new way of going about the business of learning. Although the school is mostly virtual, sports are available. Tests are given online. When the student has mastered the lesson, he automatically moves on to the next chapter or lesson. The school has a little or no homework, no backpack policy.
Aliens have landed in the form of recycled materials at Segue Institute for Learning in Central Falls, Rhode Island. The pre-owned desks and chairs were boring and dull so students refurbished them with the help of colorful tape in hot pink and black zebra stripes or rainbow swirls. always recycle—a speaker came to talk to students about the “one bin” concept and emphasized recycling is new for adults too. In the coming school year, professional development meetings with school staff will show teachers ways to build the greening from school to community. Providence gains a new school when The Village Green virtual public charter school opens in September 2013. The school year starts with freshmen and sophomores. As those students move forward, the school will become a four-year high school. The building will remain retro outside but was updated inside. Although labeled virtual, students are required to attend classes. The class schedules are unusual with the use of a blended learning model that combines online and classroom work. Students work with teachers about 40 percent of the

After a good portion of the day is spent online, the administration doesn’t feel students should be asked to go home and spend time at the computer. Instead, students are encouraged to unplug, be with friends and family, read for pleasure and enjoy themselves. Also in Providence, the Nathan Bishop Middle School was built in 1928. By 2006, it had been vacant for a year and was in poor condition. To demolish and rebuild would cost more than renovation and add a considerable amount to the carbon footprint involved in new construction. The decision to rehab was based on parental objections to demolition, the Georgian Revival the high ceilings that allowed for natural light, the systems that remained structurally sound and room sizes that
were in line with current standards. Architects were able to add modern amenities and sustainable design to save the features of the building while cost was less than expected. In 2009, the Nathan Bishop Middle School opened as a High-Performance Historic “Green” School Building. At the Greene School in West Greenwich environmental stewardship is an important part of student learning. Students, with the help of a teacher, built a waste and recycling unit for the cafeteria. A salmon release was part of a long-term research project for biology students. For a trail work design project, students camped for four nights at Tillinghast Pond—they also learned Leave No Trace practices (leave nothing behind, take nothing away). Engineering students converted a teacher’s car to run on vegetable oil. The car was shown at the 100 mile radius dinner presented at the school in June 2013. The dinner, cooked by the students, featured locally grown foods. The Greene School is an expeditionary learning school, which means interaction in the community and intensive, practical learning. Whether a child is in pre-school, high school or college, opportunities exist for creative learning of not only the standard subjects, but also how to live and work in a world of increasing technology. The best schools also teach students to be mindful to use the least and share the most.

The notion that intense dancing or a long run could spark what feels like a spiritual awakening makes sense to Philadelphia-based research neuroscientist and physician Andrew Newberg, author of How God Changes Your Brain tive “neurotheology”, he has for years used brain imaging technologies to study the impact religious or spiritual practices like deep meditation, intense prayer and speaking in tongues have on the brain. Exercise, he says, provides many of the same effects.
“God has created us with a body. Why aren’t we praying with our body?”
BETWEEN TWO WORLDS
~ Marcus Freed In addition to prompting a surge of feel-good endorphins, a highly strenuous workout is one of the few activities that can lead to simultaneous activaand parasympathetic (calming) nervous system reactions. “Normally, when one of these is active, the other one shuts down, but when people drive one or the other to a very heightened level of activity, there is some evidence that the other turns on too,” explains Newberg. paradoxically lead to an interruption in sensory information traveling to areas of the brain that control our sense of ourselves at any moment. “Not only do you have this great feeling of energy and calmness, but you tend to lose your sense of space and time,” he notes. Newberg’s own research also suggests that when people “surrender” themselves in a spiritual practice, the frontal lobe (the practical part of the brain that keeps our thoughts in check) quiets. He speculates that something similar may happen in the midst of, say, a marathon or intense dance, enabling out of the ordinary thoughts and feelings to surface. “It can allow for creativity—a blending of different, more intuitive ideas in ways you don’t normally mix things,” comments Newberg. So, is exercise able to only make us feel like we’re having a mystical experience, or is it somehow actually opening a channel to the divine? Newberg declines to go there, commenting that a brain scan tells what’s going on in the brain, not in the soul. Yet he has no doubt the two are inextricably linked. He says, “There are many well-known examples of intense experiences, like riences for people.”
Whole-Being Workouts
Marcus Freed is one of those people. He grew up in a traditional Jewish family in London, England, and attended a rabbinical seminary in Israel. Still, he felt that something was missing in his spiritual life. “I thought, ‘God has
created us with a body. Why aren’t we praying with our body?’” Freed says that Biblical text often references the body: King David, in the Book of Psalms, says, “Let all my bones praise the creator.” The Jewish Talmud refers to a rabbi that “stretched his spine with a prayer of gratitude.” Yet, Freed observes, the physical elements of daily spiritual practice have been largely forgotten over the centuries. When him. “I found a way to draw upon this incredible spiritual literature but ground it in the body, so that experience is not just in the head, but also in the heart.” Thus, Freed founded Bibliyoga, which launches each class with a Hebrew or Kabbalistic teaching, followed by poses that incorporate its The Kosher Sutras: The Jewish Way in Yoga and Meditation. The practice, now taught in cities around the United States and Europe, has prompted the birth of similarly religion-infused classes, including Christ Yoga, and the Jewish Yoga Network. “A lot of people separate things, saying they’ll get their spirituality from one place and their exercise from somewhere else,” says Freed. “I think they are missing out.”

The spirituality-exercise link likewise resonates through other traditionally solo pursuits such as triathlon activities and running, in which many athletes say a more mindful approach to training has infused their sport with more meaning, and in some cases, improved their performances. Ironman Marty Kibiloski, formerly a competitive marathoner and road racer, led what he terms a “high achievement, low contentment” life for years, measuring his self-worth by him. DEEP-HEALING YOGA Release Trauma, Build Resilience by Sarah Todd
W
hen a woman separated from her husband last fall, she tried hard to shut down her emotions. A 30-year-old working mother of two young boys, she felt she couldn’t afford to be sad or angry, even as she contemplated divorce. But something shifted when she began taking yoga classes in her town in northern Michigan. “It was my one place to relax and let go,” says Emily, who asked that her real name stay private. “I used to go to class, get into a deep stretch and cry. It was like my muscles were connected with my heart. My instructor would warn us that certain poses would provide emotional releases, and sure enough, the tears would fall.” People suffering disruptive changes —from losing a loved one to coping with unemployment or striving for sobriety— Lola Remy, of yogaHOPE, a Boston navigate challenging transitions, attests that yoga makes them feel safe enough in “The goal isn’t to make stressors go away, it’s to learn resilience,” Remy explains. “Irreparable harm isn’t necessarily the only result of experiencing stress. Even if I’m in a challenging position—like wobbling in the tree pose—I can see that I’m still okay.” The object
is to teach women that their bodies are strong and capable, giving them more obstacles off the mat.
Supporting Science
Research suggests that yoga can also be an effective therapy for people affected by some forms of severe traumatic stress. A study in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences that scanned the brains of trauma survivors after a reminder of the traumatic event revealed decreased activity in the prefrontal cortex—the part of the brain that helps make sense of raw emotions and bodily experiences. While shutting down the connection between body and mind can help in coping with dangerous experiences, need to have a high-functioning prefrontal cortex to organize the thoughts that come up and know that you’re safe in the present moment,” advises David Emerson, director of yoga services at the Trauma Center, in Brookline, Massachusetts. “Otherwise, you’re assaulted by memory sensory information.” Yoga appears to rewire the brains of trauma survivors to stop reliving past distress. “You can’t talk your prefrontal cortex into functioning well again,” Em-
erson observes. “But you may be able to do it with your body.” The study found that eight female patients that participated in traumacreases in the frequency and severity of their post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. In a study at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in Boston, co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense, military veterans enrolled in a 10-week yoga course also showed improvement in PTSD symptoms. A paper presented at a recent International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies conference studied 64 people that had experienced childhood abuse and neglect; those that participated in a trauma-sensitive yoga course had a 33 percent reduction in PTSD symptoms. Two months later, more than 50 percent in the yoga group experienced greater freedom and were no longer diagnosed as suffering from PTSD, compared to the control group’s 21 percent. Yoga can also transform traumatized lives in other ways. “For many traumatized people, being touched intimately can be a trigger,” Emerson remarks. “Yoga may let them feel ready for physical intimacy again. Others have mentioned victories such as being able to go to the grocery store and knowing exactly what foods their bodies crave.” Emerson notes that such programs emphasize choice and individual empowerment. “The beauty of yoga is that you reclaim your body as your own.”
Spreading the Word
Once largely concentrated on the East Coast, trauma-sensitive yoga programs are spreading. Jennifer Johnston, a research clinician and yoga instructor at Boston’s Mind Body Institute, sees programs like these enriching our culture’s understanding of the physical and mental health connection. “In a country where drugs and surgery are often the remember that things like yoga can change our chemistry, too.” Sarah Todd is an East Coast-based writer and editor. yoga and pilates ACROSS THE OCEAN STATE
When Depression is Our Only Visitor by Amy Weintraub
When depression is present, we often feel isolated and alone. A beautiful day can make us feel even more separated, because we sense that the rest of the world is enjoying it and we aren’t. An ideal way to sense our interconnectedness is to begin a breathing practice.
A
side from the well-documented
ruminative chain of thoughts or a negative mood state in its tracks with one of many simple yogic breathing exercises called pranayama. Trauma, loss and the everyday hassles of daily life can create constriction in the physical and emotional body. As we constrict, we begin to close off from others. Some of us carry this sense of separation throughout our lives in the form of depression. Yogic breathing can begin to break through that wall of through which we begin to feel less separate and alone. A simple breath can give us a felt sense of our connection to the energy of the cosmos. Einstein once said that we are operating under the optical delusion of our separateness and that our separateness is lethal. When we breathe mindfully, that delusion dissolves and we begin to see clearly again that we are intimately and eternally connected to the energy of the universe and to each other. What is authentic within us is given voice.

Practice
When we breathe consciously, we may quiet the clatter of thoughts so that mindfulness naturally arises. Try this simple breath when the busy mind needs a respite.
Ocean-Sounding Victory Breath (Ujjayi)
This breath, jokingly referred to as Darth Vader Breath, is soothing to the central nervous system, even as it calms the mind and supports greater focus for meditation. To begin, inhale through the nostrils to the count of four with a slight constriction at the back of the throat, so that the breath is audible, like a light snoring sound. Exhale through the nostrils for four counts, maintaining the snoring sound. The breath is slow and deep. Feel the breath expanding the belly, the ribcage, and then the upper chest. On the exhalation, pull the abdomen in and up to empty the lungs completely.
RINaturalAwakenings.com
Sense the breath at the back of the throat. Listen to your breath. Does it sound like a wave gently rolling across pebbles? Imagine your favorite pebbly beach. Does it sound like an infant’s snore? Let it be like a lullaby to yourself—perhaps a younger you. Amy Weintraub directs the LifeForce Yoga Healing Institute, which trains yoga and health professionals internationally, and is the author of Yoga for Depression and Yoga Skills for Therapists. The LifeForce Yoga protocol is used by healthcare providers worldwide. She is involved in ongoing research on the effects of yoga on mood, and will be offering LifeForce Yoga workshops at All That Matters Yoga + Holistic Health Center One workshop is for everyone; another is for therapists, yoga teachers, coaches and others who serve. SUGAR MONSTER How Sweet It Isn’t by Kathleen Barnes

“
f you have to ask yourself, you are,” advises Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, a renowned integrative physician in Kona, Hawaii, and author of Beat Sugar Addiction Now! The dangers of excessive sugar consumption, especially of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), are well known. Yet such cheap, corn-based sweeteners account for nearly 56 percent of all sweeteners, especially in beverages. The average American annually consumes 152 pounds of sugar, compared to 109 pounds in 1950, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. A large portion is ingested as sugary liquids, including juices and an average of 46 gallons of soft drinks a year—compared to 11 gallons 50 years ago.

Stevia, a powdered extract of a South American plant, is the most popular natural sweetener, delivering no calories or blood sugar swings; 200 to 300 times sweeter than sugar, a little goes a long way. Certainly, high-calorie sugars trigger weight gain, but it may be news that calories from sugar act differently in the body than those from other foods. “Fat doesn’t make you fat. Sugar makes you fat,” states Dr. John Salerno, director of The Salerno Center for Complementary Medicine, in New York, Tokyo and Sao Paolo, Brazil. “Eating carbohydrates quickly raises blood sugar (glucose), prompting the release of insulin to transport the glucose not immediately needed for energy, to the cells,” Salerno explains in his new book, The Salerno Solution: An

Healthy Sweeteners
“Am I a sugar addict?” There’s an easy way to tell.

While the negative effects of excess sugar consumption have been documented for decades, “Evidence is mounting that sugar is the primary cause of obesity, plus many chronic and lethal diseases,” says Osteopathic Physician Joseph Mercola, of Hoffman Estates, Illinois, who runs the highly popular natural health website, Mercola.com, and has authored books that include The No-Grain Diet and Sweet Deception. “Excessive fructose consumption leads to insulin resistance that appears to be the root of many, if not most, chronic diseases,” says Mercola. Beyond the obvious association with obesity, hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, liver and heart disease and Alzheimer’s have all been linked to sugar, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information at the National Institutes of Health. “Sugar, in excess, is a toxin, unrelated to its calories,” says Dr. Robert Lustig, an endocrinologist and professor of clinical pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco. “The dose determines the poison. THE NEXT EPIDEMIC:
Thyroid/Autoimmune Conditions by Anna Scurry and Dr. Jack Tips
The number of autoimmune disease and thyroid diseases is steadily growing. In fact, experts state that one in 12 people—and one in nine women— has an autoimmune disease. That’s nearly 24 million Americans. And, it’s estimated that some 27 million Americans have thyroid disease, with more than half undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. The following seven topics are both causes and contributors to the rise in autoimmune and thyroid diseases. – Free radical damage to mitochondrial and nuclear DNA, environmental toxicity (heavy metals), processed food (trans fats, sugar, etc.), electromagconsumption, toxic thought processes and unresolved emotional issues. This activates excessive immunological activity and impedes healthy cell performance. – Enteric Nervous Systemic activation of cytokines throughout the body that raise the immune system’s activity level, allowing more collateral damage from immune dysregulation (caused by overconsumption of grains, dysbiosis, use of antibiotics by people and in neuroendocrine regulation and neurotransmitters due to zonulin opening both the intestinal barrier as well as the blood/ brain barrier. heavy metals; chemicals, plastics, trans-fats, pathogens and biotoxins (mold, candida, etc.); toxic thought processes; and unresolved emotional issues, the damaged cell membranes monal messengers and struggle with free radical damage. Pathogens – Pathogens proliferate in a toxic environment. They contribute to leaky gut processes by negatively impacting the enterocytes.” – Modern culture eats the same few things over and over (wheat, milk, starch), causing increased allergenic reactivity. The human body requires a huge variety of phyto-molecular input from plants and herbs to maintain proper epigenetic expressions of optimal health. Low Thyroid Function – Cellular toxicity increases. Liver function decreases. Immune system increases vigilance. Low thyroid function is often the effect of the toxic environment coupled with inadequate iodine, selenium, fatty acids and anti-oxidant nutrients. Thyroid and Autoimmune concerns are reversible only when: The cause (usually a combination of mental/physical/ The cell membranes repair and regenerate. ATP processes are restored and mitochondrial damage has been reversed. Free radicals are quickly quenched based on nutrients that support the antioxidants, such as intra-cellular glutathione, catalase and superoxide dismutase. Adequate selenium and iodine/iodide are present (done in a strategic fashion). The tissue integrity of the thyroid is restored. Methylation processes are restored and function correctly. Stress hormones are reduced and the adrenal function has been restored. Leaky gut is corrected by addressing the microbiome and entire GI System. Our environment grows increasingly toxic and more damaging. Our approach to heal and reverse conditions like these must adapt and become more strategic given the times we are living in. Bottom line: “Heal the cell and get well” by way of epigenetics. The above can only be done by true aggravate and worsen the situation. Anna Scurry is co-director of The Alive Academy, in Pawtucket.
