DESCRIPTION Since 1905, McCallie has remained committed to providing an outstanding college preparatory program for boys. Our own experience, as well as independent research, has shown that secondary education within a single-sex environment offers fewer distractions, allows for a greater number of leadership opportunities and promotes a school culture where boys can achieve without reservation. McCallie features over 40 student-centered organizations and an outstanding array of extra-curricular activities that include nationally recognized programs in athletics, in the arts, and community service. Our students also participate in a coordinate program with Girls Preparatory School (GPS). MISSION McCallie School is dedicated to the academic, physical, spiritual, and emotional growth of boys as they prepare for college and life. The school seeks to inspire and motivate them to: strive for excellence in every endeavor; pursue intellectual and spiritual truth; lead lives of honor; act responsibly in personal, family, and community relationships; and demonstrate concern for the welfare of others.

HONOR CODE McCallie students agree to live by an Honor Code that holds each member of the school community to the highest standards of integrity. McCallie expects a boy’s word to be his bond, his work to be his own, and the property of others to be safe around him. Elected officials on the studentrun Senate administer the Honor Code.

Diploma Requirements A student who is enrolled in McCallie for four years of high school must earn a minimum of 19 academic credits in grades 9-12 to qualify for a diploma. A student who enters McCallie after the freshman year must earn a minimum of 18 academic credits. In addition, a student who enters as a sophomore must take ½ credit of Wellness, ½ credit of Bible, and ½ credit of Fine Arts. Depending on their grade of entry, a student must select the equivalant of 1½ to 2 years of additional courses.

The Core Program Each Upper School student must enroll each semester in at least 4 core courses from English, Math, History, Foreign Language, Science, and, for seniors (and qualified juniors on a space available basis), Senior Core Electives. Students must also enroll in a fifth course including: Fine Art, Bible, Public Speaking, Health, Computer Science. The recommended course of study for grades 9-12 includes 4 years of English and 3 years each of the other four core disciplines. High school credits earned prior to ninth grade will apply to the diploma requirements but do not reduce the 4 core course minimum per semester.

The typical course of study for students entering 9th grade: 4

A student may choose to satisfy minimum requirements in one or, in rare cases, two disciplines in consideration of special academic interests or needs. In those cases, only two years of Foreign Language, Lab Science, or History will satisfy diploma requirements, but the minimums apply only to courses completed in grades 9-12. Students will find that enrolling in four core courses each year enables them to meet the recommended course of study in most disciplines. In devising his academic plan, a student should be mindful of admissions requirements at those colleges and universities to which he may be interested in applying, some of which exceed the minimum requirements.

Independent Study Seniors and, infrequently, juniors have the option of planning their own course under McCallie's Independent Study policy, which enables students to pursue unique academic interests that are not offered in the regular curriculum. Most academic departments offer the independent study option, or a student may design an interdisciplinary independent study project. Sometimes small groups of students are permitted to work together on an independent study project. Most independent study lasts for one semester. If a student is interested in pursuing independent study, he should first discuss its feasibility with the Academic Dean, who can make suggestions about the plan and about which faculty members might be interested in working with the student. All independent study projects must have a sponsoring faculty member who agrees to monitor the student's progress and award grades. The student must file an Independent Study Contract with the Academic Dean by May 1 for the fall semester and by December 1 for the spring semester.

Physical Education In addition to the academic requirements, each upper school student is required to participate in some combination of interscholastic sports, personal fitness & conditioning, or other approved extra-curricular activities. Completion of this requirement each year earns one “P” credit.

Complete descriptions of educational philosophy, academic departments, and individual courses are available through the school web site.
