African Blackwood or Plastic • No carving required • Easy to reed Threaded reed seat • Comfortable to play • Good volume • Bright and stable

We put a thread on the reed seat of all chanters (except C4) which alleviates the problems of the reed coming loose, especially on the plastic chanter in dry conditions. This locks the reed in place until adjusted by the piper.

The thread means the reed is locked in place –it can’t move unless the piper moves it.

It’s also a much more accurate way of setting the chanter reed pitch.

You turn the reed clockwise to sink the reed and sharpen it, and the anti-clockwise to raise it and flatten it.

SCOTTISH smallpipes by Fred Morrison

Fred Morrison Scottish Smallpipes are a beautifully crafted precision musical instrument with great sound quality. Smallpipes have a softer, mellower and sweeter sound than the Highland pipes, making them ideal for playing at home or in a group setting where volume might be an issue. The fingering technique is the same as the Highland pipes and they are increasingly popular with Highland pipers who wish to enrich their piping experience by trying something new.

Fred Morrison Smallpipes are available in the keys of A or D, or as a combination set of both keys. Apart from the key note, the main difference between the A and D sets is the physical size of the chanter and the quality of sound. The key of A chanter is approximately the same size as a Highland pipe chanter, but the key of D chanter is much smaller and it will take most pipers time to adjust to the smaller size and spacing of the holes. Final frontier for McCallum Bagpipes

MANY pipemakers claim that their instruments are out of this world — but now we have proof after a set of McCallum Bagpipes were played by an astronaut on the International Space Station.

American Kjell Lindgren played Amazing Grace as a tribute after the death of his colleague Victor Hurst, a research scientist who had been involved in astronaut training. It’s the first time the bagpipes have been played in space.

Kjell approached McCallum Bagpipes in 2013 because he wanted to play the pipes on his International Space Station mission and bought a set of acetyl pipes.

Director Kenny MacLeod said: “He wondered if it was feasible to play bagpipes. They’re made of plastic — they’re easier to keep clean and to make sure they’re not contaminated. They are also lighter.

“Bagpipes are very difficult to play at high altitude because the air is that bit thinner. They’re quite hard to blow so he’s done well.”

The video of Kjell playing the pipes was released by US space agency NASA in November.

It has been viewed more than 65,000 times on YouTube and also featured on the BBC and in the press.

One viewer commented: “No matter how cool you think you are, you’ll never be astronaut-playingbagpipes-in-space cool.”

All our blowpipes can be fitted with any of our mouthpieces from 3” to 6” plastic (MP3) as well as the wood and alloy, imitation ivory and alloy or imitation horn and alloy (MP5), full alloy or gold plated (MP6), imitation ivory bulb and hand engraved silver tube (MP7) or the full silver (MP8) option for the appropriate additional charge. Imitation horn projecting mounts are also available on the BP3 model.

Oval mouthpiece – various lengths

The Folk Pipes have been designed by McCallum Bagpipes to play along with other instruments, allowing the piper to use a blowing and bag pressure technique as they would with the Highland pipes. The low A note on the chanter is tuned to concert pitch A (440Hz) which means that the pipes will naturally play in the keys used by other musicians when playing traditional/folk music. The pipes come set-up, ready to play with covers and cords, a synthetic bag, moisture control system, chanter reed and synthetic drone reeds.
