Is it fair to say all of us hope the weather in January and February is not indicative of what we can expect for the rest of the year? What a winter we have had! It seems like it was either raining, freezing, snowing, or a combination of all three for nearly 2 months The good news is we picked the perfect year to buy covers for the greens. After pulling the covers off for what we hope will be the last time, it looks as though our greens made it through the coldest winter months. They look healthy and happy for this time of year.
Going from one temperature extreme to another did not seem to negatively affect the greens either The picture I have included is a close up of a putting green taken on Monday, February 24, 2025 You can clearly see green grass blades beginning to emerge We pulled the greens covers off the previous Sunday
During this transition period between dormancy and total green up, greens speeds will vary. One warm, sunny day can stimulate growth quickly. This can change green speeds from morning to afternoon. We will begin topdressing greens to help ameliorate this somewhat unfortunate phenomenon I can assure you there will be days when this practice is not enough There will undoubtedly be variations in green speed We will also use plant growth regulators, like Primo, to help keep the growth in check to an extent The tricky part is to not over-regulate growth as the greens come out of dormancy This time period is when they are still subject to injury All of this is to say, this time of year is the most challenging to maintain healthy, quick, consistent, ultra-dwarf Bermuda greens The rest of the summer and into the fall, the challenge becomes much easier to manage. Please bear with us through this time of transition. We are cutting the greens, we are managing the growth, and we are also doing what is necessary for the health of the turf.
In other parts of the property, you may notice some promised additions to the landscaping We in McConnell Golf like to say we are building clubs of the future These landscaping additions are no exception While some of the plant material might look small today, we know it will grow into beautiful specimens in a matter of time Plantings have been added near the pool, the tennis gazebo, to the left of number 5 tee box, and many areas around the clubhouse. These plants will definitely enhance all of these areas. We hope to add more in the future. When time and weather allows, we will be renovating several bunkers on the property. Some will need complete renovation, others will just need some additional sand. Let’s hope the weather cooperates for the maintenance team to perform the necessary work, and so all of you can get out and enjoy the course!
Until next time, I hope to see you all around the club and on the course soon
Yours in turf,
Buckley Brockmann GM/Golf Course Superintendent
