GROUNDS

It feels like we were just welcoming the New Year, and now, the golf season is already upon us with the challenges of summer right around the corner.

January’s weather slowed our winter projects, with a three-week stretch of freezing temperatures limiting our progress. Despite the setbacks, we made headway on several key tasks, including clearing debris from the creeks, tidying areas around holes 8 and 9, completing irrigation repairs, and continuing cleanup efforts from Hurricane Helene February brought more favorable conditions, allowing us to begin seeding, preparing for sod, and repairing turf areas in time for the season

March and April will be busy months on the course. Our primary focus will be laying sod, improving drainage on holes 5 and 7, and completing our Spring Aerification, which begins on March 24. The aerification process will follow our usual approach, particularly for the greens We’ll pull cores and top-dress, followed by a DryJect treatment that injects dry sand into the topsoil This method enhances drainage, promotes firmer playing conditions, and helps maintain putting consistency throughout the season Once the greens are complete, we’ll shift our attention to approaches and teeing areas, applying a heavier layer of topdressing sand to improve firmness and overall health, particularly in approach areas

This winter, we evaluated areas where we could improve, with bunker maintenance being a top priority. To enhance efficiency, consistency, and overall playability, we’ve invested in Flymo hover mowers, which will provide a more uniform bunker appearance and performance Additionally, we’ve upgraded our bunker rakes while leaf rakes work well in most conditions, we recognized the need for a hard rake to manage sand movement more effectively, especially after rain The new bunkers on holes 3 through 8 will initially play softer, but with regular irrigation, raking, and compaction, they will soon match the consistency of the others

We’re also focusing on native areas and creek banks. Creek banks are scheduled for monthly mowing to maintain playability and control weeds. Native areas will receive increased attention, starting with an initial mowing in April and a pre-emergent application to prevent weed growth

With so much on the agenda, we’re excited to welcome several new members to the Golf Course Maintenance team So far in 2025, we’ve added five new team members and will continue to grow as the season progresses

It’s shaping up to be a busy but productive year, and we look forward to an improved 2025. As always, if you have any questions, feel free to reach out.
