what do you want from your blu-ray player?
Jimmy: gamer “It would be cool if it could load faster. Like instantly!”
cassie&kurtis recent graduates “Nothing fits our place, it is small and space is limited. Why can’t they look like anything other than a box?!”
Rodger: baby boomer “Why is the eject button is on the remote? I still need to get up and remove the disc by hand!”

Cassie & Kurtis Age 27 / recent graduates Two who have just graduated from college with a bachelorate in Graphic Design and Print Making. When not spending a majority of their time at friends weddings they tend to spend more hours than they would care to admit staying home watching movies. Living in Northern California with a combined income of 90k. With a design education the two know what they like. Looking at spending the little extra money and small signing bonus on decorating, their new home has new and nice appliances and gadgets around the house.
survey responses How often do you use your DVD/ Blu-Ray player?
Sony, Samsung
What brand are you most familiar with
I have used burned DVDs, but not Blu-Ray
Have you used recordable DVDs before.
My Blu-Ray Player will play DVDs, yes
Do you have DVD/ Blu-Ray capabilities?
The player seems light, almost empty. Like there is a lot of wasted space.
Does your DVD Player take up excessive space?
It would be nice if it wasn’t just a black shoe box
Would you prefer to have your DVD player on display?
Having the player out would require less space, but might be distracting.

Cassie & Kurtis setup and location issues concealed device looks aesthetically pleasing when not in use, but when needing to operate the door must be open and breaks the overall aesthetics of the entertainment system In order to access the Blu-Ray player the front door to the entertainment system had to be open.
I noticed that the door remained open during the entire duration of the movie.
It turned out that the door had to be open in order for the remote to work.

blu-ray player Operating the device Step1. Powering up the player can be quite the challenge. Finding the ever elusive power button seemed to be a reoccurring issue. Step2. Opening the tray requires the push of a button typically located near the tray opening. The eject button seemed easier to find than the power button. Step3. Loading the disc and closing the tray requires depressing the eject button one more time. Step4. Operating the remote was relatively easy due to the large and apparent buttons on the face. Step5. The last operation before viewing the movie is to navigate your way through the selection screens that differ from movie to movie

mind map
mapping out categories and areas of interest that were of importance to me. There was an ovbious attention to the LCD screen and controls. i took this in a different direction and wanted to take them to a minimum if not eliminate them entirely from the design.

in the tear-down I discovered that there was a large amount of wasted space due to cost effect of components. after tearing down a device I realized that a lot of realistate could be saved by improving on components technologies and reduction of size.

concept objectives
McCord Blackwell DSID 125 Blu-ray
desired aesthetics juxtaposed: to place close together or side by side, especially for comparison or contrast. rhythmic: cadenced; rhythmical. uniformity: the state or quality of being uniform; overall sameness, homogeneity, or regularity: uniformity of style. composed: calm; tranquil; serene ambivalent: uncertainty or fluctuation, especially when caused by inability to make a choice or by a simultaneous desire to say or do two opposite or conflicting things.

Issue of location of device and accessibility.
Having an eject button on the remote seems kind of oxymoronic. The user still needs to install the disc manually
Having the blu-ray player concealed behind glass with the other entertainment devices is counter intuitive. One still needs to open the door in order to install a disc or even to operate the device

preliminary sketches
looking at a variety of both forms and functions allowing a large selection to select from.
McCord Blackwell DSID 125 Blu-ray
initial concepts clamp design the clamp design was taking from the pannini grill for inspiration. I liked the idea of clamping around the disc. a spin on the record player.
metronom design with the metronom in mind for the movement of the disc versus the laser head itself. I liked the concept of moving the disc instead of the laser to read the content of the disc.
wall mount design looking at freeing up the clutter of the entertainment system, I was thinking that wall mounted would relieve that space a little as well as freshen up the traditional form factor of the disc player.
disc holder design starting with a sarcastic concept of a taco, I then realized that there might be some validity to the concept itself. holding the disc in a state of limbo creates a sense of tension. McCord Blackwell DSID 125 Blu-ray
narrowing down
metronom
the metronom design showed promis with its effect of showing progress with out the use of a screen
McCord Blackwell DSID 125 Blu-ray
clamp
the clamp design was a new approach to loading the disc. Giving the user an alternative to the long time running reign of the disc tray
wall mount
the wall mount design was appealing due to its effectiveness in being a piece of art when not in use and again being an alternative to the traditional
final direction
The final design was a melding of the compontents and aspects of the concepts that came before it.
McCord Blackwell DSID 125 Blu-ray
concept evolution getting the little details and compnents was the tough part. Since the form was so simple the devil was in the details. So getting them right was crucial. A good majority of my time wsspent figuring out those details
McCord Blackwell DSID 125 Blu-ray
concept evolution
McCord Blackwell DSID 125 Blu-ray
concept evolution
starting with a simple mock up in order to get a better understanding of scale and basic desired functions.
i then decided on a simple rail system that would protrude from the face of the device created a elgant feel and language.
working on the carrier for the disc was the next challenge to the device.
finding something that would compliment not clutter the over all design was one of the most challenging parts to the form. McCord Blackwell DSID 125 Blu-ray
concept evolution
many refinments came to flourition just with the use of mock ups and lay out.
the final form started to come out of the wood work at this point.
getting closer to a carrier system that would compliment the design.
