DIRECT DIRECTOR from the

As we move into summer and reflect on July 4th 1776, consider the thoughts of our Founding Fathers. We ponder the decision-making process that moved them to adopt a bold and untested experiment in federal self-governance. They chose to unite 13 diverse and distant colonies who often questioned what they held in common and whether it was sufficient to form and sustain a nation. As the first settlement in the modern world to declare and obtain its independence, the United States serves as an example to the many that later followed our path. Our example is filled with human frailty, profound human misjudgments, moral decisions deferred, and often, serious consequences paid. As a young nation, we made our share of mistakes and did not always make the right decisions. As we grew in experience, we evolved into a country with increased tolerance and acceptance for the rights of all citizens. As we prepare to celebrate the 4th of July and our independence, let us take time to reflect and not forget the challenges and sacrifices of those who laid down their lives then and now to protect our freedom. As Americans, we have much to be proud of and to celebrate. I encourage everyone to celebrate Independence Day safely. In this issue of Preview, we continue to share valuable tips on navigating the summer including an article on the phenomenon known as shallow water blackout, presented by our Aquatics Director. The activities in this month’s issue are just a small sample of what our host nation has to offer and what is available through MCCS. Lastly, I remind you all to collect and save your Santa Bucks this month; the MCX is celebrating Christmas in July. Use your bucks to save on your purchases in December. As always, we are “Here to Serve”, working together for a better community. Enjoy this month’s issue, enjoy the summer fun and above all stay safe. R IVALRY

by Michelle Northam, Victim Advocate and Prevention Specialist

Anyone with more than one child or brothers or sisters is well aware of the epic sibling wars that can occur within a household. Numerous things cause siblings to argue and fight. The good news is, it does not last forever; some siblings become best friends as they grow up. Until then, here are some things parents can do to support positive and healthy sibling relationships.

Arguments are inevitable when you have different personalities living under one roof. When an argument occurs, do your best not to get involved unless it becomes physical. Take this opportunity to listen in case you need to mediate. At that point, you may need to coach them through the conflict.

Here are some tips and tricks to help when an argument becomes out of control:

How can we help to decrease sibling rivalry? • Do not play favorites • Set aside 5-10 minutes a

day for each child

• Do not compare children • Find tasks for them to

complete as a team. Try having them race the clock to clean up the playroom or living room.

• Do fun family activities

together.

• Give kids time and space.

Let them have time with friends, by themselves and with you. Let them do activities they choose.

• Teach your children

positive ways to get attention from each other and from you.

• Sharing is important.

However, if your child has something special, have them put it in their bedroom if they do not want to share.

• Appreciate each

child for their individuality and praise who they are.

• Being fair does not

always mean equal.

4

P R E V I E W M A G A Z I N E | F I N D U S O N F A C E B O O K : M C C S I WA K U N I

• Give both of them a cooling off period in their room or

somewhere else before you begin discussing the issue, especially if tempers are running hot.

• Do not play referee, they each may have a valid

argument.

• Teach them that it is ok to be angry, but yelling,

screaming, or hitting is not acceptable.

• If they were fighting over a toy, take the toy away from

everyone.

• If it is something they can play with together and they are

willing to compromise allow it. But one argument, and it will be taken away.

Learning to resolve conflicts with guidance from their parents is a skill that will help children understand another person’s point of view, value others perspectives and control aggressive impulses.

Remember, they are watching how you handle conflicts with your spouse, with them and with friends.

Tsuzu Beach A few kilometers closer than Yuu, Tsuzu beach is a little more rustic. The beach has no protection, but it has rocks for kids to climb, a cool old tunnel that connects one side of the beach to the other and a fitness course on the hillside above. AND HAVE FUN IN THE SUN By Andrea Aguirre, CHES

Whether you’re at the beach, pool, or sightseeing, summer is the perfect time to be outside and enjoy the weather. If you’re not careful, the sun can make these activities miserable. Check out some common questions for protecting yourself against the sun’s harmful rays.* What Exactly Are Ultraviolet (UV) Rays?

What is SPF? SPF = Sun Protection Factor, which refers to the ability of a sunscreen to block UV rays. It is an estimate of the time it would take you to burn in the sun if you were not wearing sunscreen versus the time it would take with sunscreen on.

Which sunscreen should I use? • Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen because it protects

Sunscreen Protection SPF 15

blocks 93% of UVB rays

SPF 80 blocks 99% of UVB rays

SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays

SPF 100 blocks 99% of UVB rays

SPF 50

SPF 110 blocks 99% of UVB rays

blocks 99% of UVB rays

Do You Know Your Skin Type? TANNING AND SUNBURN HISTORY SKIN TYPE

UV rays are a part of sunlight that is an invisible form of radiation. UV rays can penetrate and change the structure of skin cells, which can cause cancer. There are two types of UV rays that affect you. Ultraviolet A (UVA) rays penetrate beyond the top layer of human skin. UVA radiation can damage connective tissue and increase a person’s risk for developing skin cancer. Ultraviolet B (UVB) rays penetrate less deeply into the skin and are the chief culprit behind sunburns.

1 2 3 4 5 6

Always burns, never tans, sensitive to sun exposure Burns easily, tans minimally Burns moderately, tans gradually to light brown Burns minimally, always tans well to moderately brown Rarely burns, tans profusely to dark Never burns, deeply pigmented, least sensitive

against both UVA and UVB rays.

• Experts recommend using sunscreens with a minimum

SPF 15. Don’t be fooled by sunscreens with a high SPF like, 75, 90, or 100. They can be expensive and only provide slightly more protection than sunscreens with SPF 15.

How much sunscreen should I use?

*References: cdc.gov/HealthyYouth/skincancer/pdf/QA.pdf

No sunscreen offers 100% protection. The best way to make sure you are protected is to reapply sunscreen often, at least every 1 ½ - 2 hours, even if the sunscreen is labeled as “sweatproof” or “waterproof.”

Can clothing protect me from the sun? Loose-fitting long-sleeved shirts and long pants made from tightly woven fabric offer the best protection. If you can’t wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt, you can boost your protection by seeking shade whenever possible and by always wearing sunscreen with at least SPF 15.

Oops! I got too much sun. What do I do now? Overexposure to the sun’s rays is bound to happen every now and then, but a cool bath, unscented moisturizer (lotion, no petroleum jelly), hydrocortisone cream, water, and no more sun may help relieve the symptoms of being sunburned. For more serious symptoms, contact your physician or emergency services if necessary.

People with skin types 1 and 2 are at the highest risk for damage as a result of sun exposure. However, anyone can get skin cancer. The risk of skin cancer is greater among those who sunburn readily and tan poorly, namely those with red or blond hair, and fair skin that freckles or burns easily. Although the risk is lower among those with darker skin or complexion, they too can get skin cancer and need to adopt behaviors to reduce their risk.

Enjoy your fun in the sun and remember to take care of your health by protecting yourself from sun damage. For more resources and information, visit cdc.gov/cancer/skin/basic_info/prevention.htm or contact Health Promotions at 253-3696.

We are truly appreciative of your continuous support, guidance and belief in our programs and facilities throughout the years. With sincere gratitude from your Marine Corps Community Service Team

THE RETIRING MARINE Dropping their pack or dropping papers is never giving up or quitting. It is simply transitioning through. They have dedicated and given more than two decades of their life to the Corps, country and you. So retirement is their choice and most definitely their right to do. So wish them well, gods speed and say job well done. Just because they wish to retire it doesn't change who they are. They are still that stellar Marine at the end of the day. Always a Marine at heart just not in the role day to day, but a retiring Marine is still your brother or sister nothing has changed about them today. Transition is hard enough, but a little easier when you are supported all the way through. So from the Corps and the United States to the retiring Marine... Semper Fidelis... Always Faithful. That's what the retiring Marine was and will always be to you... By: Jennifer M. Diaz

Rafting is one of the best “get out and go adventures in Japan. Great rapids and helpful companies are located in Shikoku, well worth the drive. There are many trips available over the summer as well as planning your own trip. Most companies provide overnight cabins or rooms, enhancing your experience. Rafting companies also provide canyoning that involves rappelling, climbing and zip lines through waterfalls and rivers. We have information on hand to get you started in canyoning.

BIKING

Road bikes have become very popular here in Iwakuni. Other than a bike it doesn’t take much to get out and go! Outdoor Recreation also provides trips 4 times a year, two in the Spring and two in the Fall that travel to Shimanami-Kaido. Shimanami is an islandhopping bike ride that is a total of 70 kilometers. Participants can choose to take the shorter route or complete the entire trail. Stay tuned for trips in September and October.

CAMPING

Don’t forget about mountain biking either! A lot of the ski resorts transform their slopes to mountain biking trails in the summer. Some sites even have bikes to rent. Depending on where you go they are easily located or within a few hours drive.

Camping is one of the best ways to enjoy Japan’s beauty without an elaborate trip or luxurious prices. There are many options when it comes to choosing your weekend abode. Most locations provide options as to the style of lodging: cabin, tent (on a platform), grass area (you must bring your own tent), or even RV parking. Hamada Beach, Oshima Island, Miyajima are all great camping spots that allow you to enjoy the ocean. Seven Falls, Yasaka Dam, and Bihoku Camping Village are great places to enjoy the nearby dam or park. Depending on what you are looking for there is something for everyone.

SURFING

There are many locations throughout Japan for surfing including Hamada Beach; further locations include Shikoku and Kyushu. At Hamada the waves aren’t very consistent but if you plan a trip on a long holiday you could easily hit the waves along Shikoku’s coast or down south in Miyazaki.

that you can participate in during the summer months. Many locations near base including Three Peaks, Seven Falls, Three Falls, Sandankyo, Oshima Island, Mt. Houben are great places to explore and see Japan without breaking the bank. All of the hiking trails are rated moderate. Most of the trails are looping trails that allow you to end at your start point without retracing your steps. Many of the hiking trails also have camping areas at the base of the mountain so that you are able to fully enjoy the outdoors for the weekend. One of the most popular and sought after trips is the Mt. Fuji climb. There are many options in order to fulfill your dream of climbing the highest mountain in Japan. Outdoor Recreation and Single Marine Program have trips in July and Outdoor Recreation has two more trips in August. Although there are some restrictions (SMP provides the trip for unaccompanied and single service members, and Outdoor Recreation's trip requires a minimum age of 10), ITT can provide a trip to Tokyo and you can plan a day trip to include hiking Mt. Fuji.

HIKING

Hiking is one of the easiest and most rewarding activities

SAILING Sailing is back in full force and we have started classes! There are a lot of options for boating, you just need to know the right locations and have the right license if necessary. Our sailboats are currently living at Hikari Marina which is just south of Yanai. You must have a US recognized sailing certification in order to rent the sails at Gear Issue ($10 rental fee per day). There are various classes scheduled throughout the summer and fall months, please call Outdoor Recreation for more information.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding is a new, emerging sport that has become very popular. Gear Issue recently received new boards that we will be able to issue this month. There are many different types of paddle boarding including sur f and touring. In the states, there are even yoga paddle boarding classes! Give us a call for more information.

RECREATION ARTICLE

THE STRIKE ZONE, IT’S NOT JUST BOWLING! by Jessica Guthrie, Community Writer

As the heat and humidity of the Iwakuni summer rolls in, you will want to roll in to the Strike Zone Bowling Center for some fun and affordable (sometimes even free!) entertainment. The Strike Zone offers plenty of entertainment for all ages… and all in the comfort of ample air conditioning. Operations assistant Jeffrey Daly noted, “there are plenty of affordable options throughout the week”. The Strike Zone offers open bowling from 11 AM to 5 PM daily. Regular daytime bowling is $1.75 for adults and through the summer, the student special for kids is 50 cents a game, giving the station’s younger residents something to do while school is out. “For $3 the kids can rent shoes and play three games,” Facility Manager Brian Eagmin said. “It gives them somewhere to go during the day out of the heat.” But there’s a deal for adults, too. Buy your lunch between 11 AM and 2 PM Monday – Friday at the bowling center and military members can bowl as many games as they want for free. When civilians buy their lunch, they get one game free. Plus the Strike Zone is a free Wi-Fi hotspot.

The Strike Zone also offers more than just food and bowling. The 11th Frame lounge opens at 3 PM. daily, closing at 11 PM Sunday - Thursday and 1 AM, Friday and Saturday. It can also be reserved earlier for private and unit functions. There is also a game room, billiards, lockers and a stocked bowling pro shop. Once evening rolls around, there are different events and specials nearly every night of the week:

Sunday and Monday nights offer open bowling to everyone. Night

and weekend games are $2.25 each for adults and $2 for children. Shoe rental is $1.25, and for those bowlers who arrive wearing heels or sandals , socks must be worn and can be purchased for $1.25.

Tuesday night is Penny a Pin bowling. Whatever your score is for

the game you play, that’s what you pay. Unless you score big, then your game is free! To earn a free game, men must score 225, women must score 200 and kids must score 150.

Wednesday night is league night,

with a show time of 5:30 and game start of 6 PM But don’t let the word “league” scare you off. Leagues are open to anyone on base, and Daly encourages anyone who is interested to simply come up to the Strike Zone and see if any substitutes are needed on teams.

“Come up and throw a couple of games with the guys. It’s a great way to meet people and find out what’s going on.”

Thursday is Red Head Pin Night.

If the digital screen shows a head pin (the single pin at the front of the 10-pin configuration every bowler faces on the first throw) that is red instead of white, bowl a strike. If you bowl a strike you’ll earn a Red Head Pin coupon and two coupons equal a free game on any night other than Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Friday night, like Sunday and Monday nights, are usually open bowing nights, unless there is a

Friendship bowling league, where both SOFA status personnel and Japanese nationals gather together to bowl. Stop by the Strike Zone if you’re interested in finding out more about this unique opportunity to interact with the locals.

Saturday night is Cosmic Bowling… starting at 7 PM the lights go down, the music comes up and the disco lights flash – a lot of fun for kids… and kids at heart.

And speaking of kids, the Strike Zone is incredibly kid-friendly: shoe rentals as small as children’s size 7, bowling balls as light as six pounds and gutter bu mpers that activate with each individual bowler, so Mom and Dad can bowl on the same lane as the kids without feeling like they are cheating. If your children aren’t in the mood to bowl, there is also an indoor playground. Parent supervision is required.

For more information about the Strike Zone, call 253-3495.

AQUATICS ARTICLE

SHALLOW WATER BLACKOUT by Stephanie R. Brown, MA Aquatics Manager “Why can’t we see who can hold their breath under water the longest, lifeguard?” This is a question lifeguards are asked when a patron is told they may not hyperventilate or perform prolonged underwater breath holding exercises. The reason they may not is shallow water blackout.

Mr. Iwaniec offered some suggestions for anyone who wants to begin free diving: 1. Practice out of water. 2. Do not hyperventilate. 3. Perform deep breathing exercises- slow breaths in, exhale slowly and completely. Breaths should be slow and rhythmic. Breathe from the diaphragm

Take several deep breaths in and out then hold your breath while you read this article. What is shallow water blackout? Simply put, shallow water blackout is a faint underwater. All swimmers are susceptible to shallow water blackout regardless of ability, health or age, in swimming pools or open water. Shallow water blackout is brought on by a lack of carbon dioxide in the body, combined with a dip in the oxygen level – when the oxygen level in the blood runs low before the carbon dioxide level rises to the point that triggers the breathing reflex, the swimmer faints and must be rescued immediately to prevent drowning. Surprisingly, the swimmer never actually feels as though a breath is needed.

4. Do not practice prolonged breath holding or hyperventilating in a pool. 5. Walk light poles as far as you can while holding your breath, relax and then repeat. Try to go further at your own pace 6. Exercise regularly, keep physically fit. 7. Do deep breathing exercises and perform aerobic activity prior to practicing.

SHALLOW WATER BLACKOUT If you already free dive or are ready to move into free diving remember the following: 1. Always free dive with a partner

2. Free dive after a very light meal, for example a banana and some juice 3. Remember that you need to be relaxed while in the ocean

Free diving, which is defined as “the sport or activity of diving without a breathing apparatus” is enjoyed by many people. John Iwaniec, Director of MCCS, is an experienced and internationally ranked free diver and he says, “Shallow water blackout victims are often established practitioners of breath holding diving; are fit; strong swimmers and have not experienced problems before. The divers drown quietly underwater without alerting anyone to a problem.” Mr. Iwaniec has 55 years of experience as a free diver. As a child, the ocean fascinated him and when he was old enough he began spear fishing, through trial, error and much practice, Mr. Iwaniec became a skilled free diver. In the years that he has been free diving, Mr. Iwaniec has lost friends in free diving accidents and that has made him extremely mindful of the danger that can be involved in free diving.

When free diving, deep-water blackout can also be an issue. Deep water blackout occurs as the surface is approached following a breath-hold dive of over ten meters and typically involves deep free-divers practicing dynamic apnea depth diving, usually at sea. The immediate cause of deep water blackout is the rapid drop in the partial pressure of oxygen in the lungs on ascent.

32

4. Drink one quart of water prior to free diving and hydrate throughout the dive

5. You want to weight yourself so that you have positive buoyancy at 10 feet deep. Do not weight yourself in a pool 6. If you “see stars” or have tingling fingers you are close to blacking out! 7. Do not drink alcohol while diving

There are many fun things you may do at a pool but prolonged underwater breath holding and hyperventilating are two things you may not do. If you are interested in free diving remember the things mentioned here and do your research. Be safe and smart.

Still holding your breath? Exhale. Did you make it to this point without breathing? How did you feel? Now imagine holding your breath 10 feet or more underwater for as long as it took to read this article!
