DIRECT DIRECTOR from the

As we move into the summer months, I am sure everyone is excited about all the wonderful activities available throughout Japan. In concert with the warm weather, MCCS has some new activities available this year so I want to mention a few: We have a full certification class for Ocean Kayaking available through Outdoor Recreation(253-3822) at IronWorks Gym. You can now become qualified to check out kayaks and paddle around the beautiful Japanese coastlines. We also have sailing classes available this summer at Hikari. If you are interested in taking classes for your sailing certification, you can apply with Outdoor Recreation. Upon receipt of your certification, you can then check out sailboats at the Hikari Marina. The facilities at Hikari are very nice including the availability of showers and a nice restaurant for your convenience. With the new Dive Master onboard, we are offering Scuba Diving classes again, so get out there and get your open water certification. With all these great activities and much more, I also want to mention safety. As you may know the summer months bring a lot of opportunity for fun, but these are also the months when we historically have accidents. Please be careful and use the buddy system if you are involved in activities that might jeopardize your safety. Throughout the summer, we are presenting articles on water safety. This month’s article, page 4, provides a safety overview focusing on tips to keep in mind around the pool. Our MCCS Outdoor Recreation team has planned a Whitewater Rafting trip, June 1, Dinner on the River, June 13 and two Hamada Beach Surfing trips for June 21 and 29. For you land lovers, visit Tokyo (June 13-18) or enjoy a trip to Cherry Pick at a local winery with ITT (2534377). Cultural Adaptation (253-6161) offers two trips this month, the first and perhaps their most popular takes place on June 8; join the Rice Planting Experience. On June 28, they host a trip to Miyajima Island. I encourage you to share your experiences as a community writer, our feature article about the Mount Fuji experience, as well as many other articles are contributed from members of our Iwakuni family, sharing their memories and encouraging others to experience everything Japan has to offer both outside and inside the gates. For those who are staying local, Club Iwakuni introduces Taste of Asia, June 8 and Celebrates Fathers with a great brunch on June 16, for details and reservations contact Club Iwakuni at 253-3363. Treat dad to a feast without having to clean up the kitchen! Whatever you have planned, MCCS is here and ready to serve you! AQUATICS ARTICLE

THE BEACH! THE POOL! THE RIVER! SUN AND FUN! by Stephanie R. Brown, MA Aquatics Manager

Many people enjoy the summer and the chance to go to the beach, the pool or the river. Here are a few tips to help you have a fun and safe time in or around the water: Sunscreen: No matter what your complexion,

TH E

RKS WATERWO

POOL ! IS NOW

OPEN

always wear sunscreen. Sunscreen should be applied approximately 30 minutes prior to going out in the sun and should be reapplied after swimming or if perspiring.

Information for a safe and fun summer at the pool:

Alcohol: Water and alcohol do not mix. More than half of people who drown have consumed alcohol prior to their accident. People who have consumed alcohol are not permitted to use the MCCS swimming pools.

1. Anyone aged 15 and younger must take our swim test in order to swim in all areas of the pool without direct supervision. Direct supervision means a parent or guardian is within arm’s reach of the child at all times. The swim test consists of a 50 meter swim utilizing a recognizable stroke while demonstrating comfort and ease in the water and 2 minutes of treading water. This applies to the indoor pool as well.

False sense of security: Water wings, rafts and inner tubes are not a substitute for parental supervision. Children should always be supervised by an adult whenever they are around water. Most people drown within 10 to 30 feet of safety. Per NAVMED Order P5010-4, which governs all Marine Corps and Navy swimming pools, Coast Guard approved lifejackets and water wings may be worn by non-swimmers and are permitted in the shallow end of the pool only.

Failure to follow facility rules: Lifeguards want all customers to have a good time at their respective facilities but their number one duty is to PREVENT accidents. Sometimes what a customer perceives as fun, a lifeguard knows can be dangerous. The lifeguards are there for the safety of all customers. A complete list of the pool rules can be found at the Indoor and Waterworks swimming pools. They are in English and Japanese.

4

2. Anyone aged 9 and younger who does not pass the swim test must have direct supervision at all times. Anyone aged 10 and older who does not pass the swim test must wear a life-jacket. All non swimmers, adults or children must remain in the shallow end at all times. This applies to the indoor pool as well. 3. Eating, drinking and smoking are not permitted in the pool or on the pool deck. The only exception is plain water. 4. Shoes are not permitted on the pool deck. 5. Please do not run in the pool area. The deck is slippery and you may fall and hurt yourself.

P R E V I E W M A G A Z I N E | F I N D U S O N F A C E B O O K : M C C S I WA K U N I

6. Parents, please monitor your children. The lifeguards are there for the safety of everyone in the facility but parental supervision is needed. If you ever have any questions regarding a rule the lifeguards are happy to help or call the Aquatics Manager at 253-4966.

COOKING ARTICLE

TIME TO BREAK OUT THE GRILL

We love to grill whenever and whatever we can. Recently, we ran out of our favorite bottled BBQ sauce at the last minute and experimented with foods from our pantry. After a few trials and errors we came up with a great, easy to make BBQ sauce that has just a bit of a bite and a hint of Asian flavor. It’s now a regular in our kitchen; try it on steaks, pork, salmon, chicken or anything else you throw on the grill. We hope you enjoy our happy accident as much as we do!

BASIC BBQ SAUCE Ingredients Ketchup 2 c Soy Sauce ⅔c Cider Vinegar ¼ c Mirin (Sweet Sake) ¼c Sake ¼c 2 tbsp Sesame Oil Worcestershire Sauce ¼c Brown Sugar (firmly packed) ¼c 2 tbsp Molasses 2 tbsp Dijon Mustard Hot Red Chilies, 2 or to taste Dried, Seeds Removed 1 tbsp Chili Powder 2 tps Liquid Smoke ½ tsp Fresh Ground Black Pepper

Method: tive saucepan. 1. Combine all ingredients in a non-reac . heat high 2. Bring to a boil over medium5 minutes or until sauce is 10-1 3. Reduce heat to medium and simmer ly to keep from burning. dark, thick and rich, stirring frequent pepper to taste. 4. Adjust sweetness, sourness and hot

14

SIDE DISHES ON THE GRILL When we think of grilling, we think of meat - big Flintstone sized hunks of it. But, veggies and fruits are great on the grill too! In fact, if you balance out your plate with produce, your brontosaurus steak can fit right in with your health goals. When grilling veggies, don’t forget the flavor! Salad dressings make a great marinade or try a dry spice rub. Almost any dried spice blend will do; try lemon pepper, Cajun spice or even a toss in curry paste. Always turn frequently to get that smoky char without burning your dinner! Some ideas for great grilled sides: CORN ON THE COB Place directly on the grill and rotate to get grill “stripes” down the length of the cob. Serve with a sprinkle of chili powder and a squeeze of lime. POTATOES (OR SWEET) Cut large ones in half then pierce with a fork all over, roll in oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Place directly on the grill grate or wrap in foil and place in the coals. ASPARAGUS Cooks well lain crosswise across the grill grates to keep from falling into the flame. VEGETABLE SKEWERS Fast and convenient; use similar sized items so that they cook ev e n ly. W h ole mu s h ro om , cherry tomato, yellow pepper and onion skewers go great with that steak!

SALAD ON THE GRILL! Grill romaine lettuce halves for 2-3 minutes or just until slightly w i lted . S e r ve w it h Caesa r dressing and parmesan cheese or with blue cheese dressing and chopped bacon pieces. Whatever you decide to grill, remember the main reason we BBQ- being outside in the fresh air with the company of good friends and family is the best seasoning that any meal could have!

Troy Guyer and Rac

hel McCandless

“Grilling, broiling, barbecuing whatever you want to call it - is an art, SMALLER VEGETABLE not just a matter of building a pyre Pieces, foil packets are the way and throwing on a piece of meat as a to go. Just use a double layer of sacrifice to the gods of the stomach.” foil to keep them from bursting. -James Beard, 'Beard on Food'

The Heart of The Land of The Rising Sun by Abby Collins, Community Writer

Mt. Fuji is the tallest mountain in Japan at 12,388 feet Over 100,000 visitors travel to Mt. Fuji every year Climbing season opens the first week of July and ends the last week of August

Station 5 :T

ning

J

apan is known as “the land of the rising sun.” In the year and a half I have lived here, I have witnessed some of the most breathtaking sunrises I have ever seen in my life. The way the sun kisses the Japanese skies each day is truly something remarkable and can only be translated in an artist’s painting. In order to truly appreciate “the land of the rising sun,” I decided I had to climb Mt. Fuji before I left Japan. In August of 2012, I did just that and I rounded up a group consisting of my fiancé, my sister who was visiting from the states, three good friends from college who are from Japan and myself. We started in Tokyo and departed from a central location on a tour bus filled with 50 other Mt. Fuji enthusiasts including a tour guide. Unfortunately, our tour guide only spoke Japanese so we relied heavily on my friends for translation. I would recommend booking a trip with Outdoor Recreation or the Single Marine Program (SMP). Two and a half hours later, we arrived at station 5 our starting point. When we got off the bus, we purchased some climbing sticks and then started to ascend around noon. Our guide told us we would be hiking at a slow pace in order to minimize any adverse effect of the altitude, and he gave us some tips on how to breathe as we reached higher ground. I wasn’t too concerned about this since we had each packed a small oxygen tank. Nevertheless, I appreciated the frequent stops because it made the hike feel less daunting. As we continued, all I could see around me were streams of people from all over the world, each trekking along the dirt path. The magnitude of the adventure we had embarked upon had not yet hit me. Everyone was happy and in good spirits and for a moment I thought this was going to be much easier than what I had prepared for.

We finally arrived at station 8.5 around 10 PM. We would be resting here in a large cabin overnight. When we entered, we removed our boots and wet clothes and slowly hobbled over to a table to sit and eat our dinner.

Station 6

:Stil l smili

ng

Shortly after thinking this, the beautiful trees and plants around us started to disappear as a thick fog rolled in and turned the nice warm afternoon into a mysterious and cool one. The change in weather also brought a change in mood. We found ourselves quiet and focused. The dirt path soon turned into a rocky terrain and the resting stops became opportunities to layer on our clothes and jackets. We made it to station 7 within three hours of starting at station 5. At the pace we were going, I thought we would surely make it to the summit by nightfall. These thoughts quickly faded as steady rain and thick fog covered the mountain. The dirt path soon t u r n e d i nto l ava rocks that only grew larger in size. Before we knew it, we were on all fours literally climbing rocks to get through the path. With each rock I climbed I questioned what I was doing on this mountain. I felt foolish and embarrassed at my struggle. Luckily, my fiancé picked up on my vibe and started motivating and encouraging me to keep going. This allowed me to do the same for the rest of the group, which was also struggling in silence. Someway, somehow, we powered through station 7 into the sunset. There wasn’t much we could see other than a zigzag of bright jackets worn by fellow hikers. As the night fell upon us, the cold wind grew much more menacing and the silence became deafening.

Dinner was served at a Japanese style table which meant that the process of sitting down was far from graceful. After inhaling our food, we were instructed that the hike would continue promptly at 1:30 AM. We painfully made our way up a small narrow ladder to access the sleeping area which was long enough across to fit about 20 sleeping bags. In what seemed like five minutes after we hit the pillow, we were up and getting ourselves ready for round two! After gearing up, I did some quick math and calculated we would arrive at the summit in about four or four and a half hours given that it had taken us about 10 hours to get to station 8.5. I tried to focus on the fact that we had less than half of the terrain we covered the day before to hike before we were at the top. However, my attempts at keeping a positive attitude soon proved to be futile after about a couple of hours into the climb. Although we were moving at a much slowe r p ac e , we were exhausted and I was convinced that our guide was on a mission to climb the remainder of the hike without any breaks. We pushed forth and Station 8.5 :Cabin Fever slowly, the soft sobs of a young boy in the group penetrated the silence. I felt his pain. We all did. He cried for all of us. As I looked up, clouds rolled by as if they were on fast forward and yet it seemed like we were getting nowhere. We stopped abruptly near a torii and we were finally allowed to rest. Since we had passed no other huts or signs, I figured we had only reached station 9 and I felt so hopeless. No one spoke a word; not even the most macho hikers among us. Our tour guide spoke a few words in Japanese and then walked away. Some of the other hikers laughed, some moaned out loud, and others stayed quiet. I don’t know if I was too tired, too cold, too overwhelmed or what but I didn’t care to have anyone translate. I was exhausted and assumed he was saying we were only resting for ten minutes.

TAIPEI TRAVELS

by Nikk i Bennett,

If you book through Academy Travel, you might end up on the cool Hello Kitty plane (through Eva air) that flies rez ua S ew dr An to Taipei from Fukuoka. The entire : by Photograph plane is decked out in Hello Kitty stuff Hello Kitty pillows, blankets, toilet paper, silverware even the carrots in Hello Kitty Plane the lunch were cut out to look like Hello Kitty.

Shilin Night Market: This is one of the busiest night markets in Taipei. Lined with food vendors and shops, the night market is crowded, noisy, and might overwhelm your senses with all the different smells but it’s well worth visiting. Very near the market is Modern Toilet, a kitchy restaurant that has attracted much media attention. The food isn’t the greatest (don’t expect haute cuisine at a place where a giant, fuzzy pink poo comes out to greet you) but the décor is hilarious. You sit on toilet seats, the tables are made from old bathtubs, and you can pull your napkins off a toilet paper dispenser. The food is served to you in ceramic toilet bowls, and if you order a drink it comes in a tall ceramic urinal. Taipei 101: Up until 2010, when Dubai

Shilin Nigh

built a megascraper more than 400 feet higher, Taipei 101 was the tallest building in the world. Standing at 1,440 feet, this beautiful skyscraper boasts a 360 degree view of the city from its observation deck. You may not want to stand in the long lines to experience this view, but visit the building anyway. One of the best dim sum restaurants in Taipei DinTai -Fung is located in the building, as well as tons of shops.

Maokong Gondola : If you take Taipei’s immaculate subway system out to the Taipei Zoo stop (we didn’t go to the zoo, but it might be worth visiting if you have kids) you can ride a gondola all the way up MaoKong mountain. Try riding one of the glass-bottom gondolas for an extra thrill, and make sure you get off at the second stop and visit the Zhinan temple, a gorgeous complex overlooking the city. If you ride all the way to the top, you’ll discover several tea farms and tea houses with excellent food and spectacular views.

With interest in mainland China surging, Taipei is one of the most underrated tourist destinations in Asia. travel.nytimes.com

National Palace Museum: Plan to spend an entire day here if you visit. We did, and we still didn’t see all of it. The museum holds a huge collection of bronze, jade, Ming dynasty pottery, ancient artifacts, maps and scrolls. Originally, most of these artifacts were kept in the Forbidden City in China, but were moved to this museum during the 1940s. The collection is so vast, only about 1% is shown to the public (and you’ll still struggle to view that 1% in one day.) The museum also has a wonderful tea house on the top floor, which, besides serving tea, boasts a full array of traditional Chinese and Taiwanese dishes. Make sure you have lunch there; it’s well worth the money.
