PREPPING FOR MARINE CORPS BALL by Shelby Thompson, MCCS Services

We all look forward to the Marine Corps Ball each year. The glitz and glamour makes the night memorable; Marines in their dress blues and spouses in their ball gowns. While the night is always amazing, we all know getting ready for this event is no small feat. A lot of work goes into looking our best! As a Marine, there is a lot to be done to make sure everything is ready to celebrate this important night. The uniform is clean and pressed, with medals and/or ribbons mounted. Given a Marine’s hectic work schedule, living in Iwakuni offers its own sets of challenges in preparing for the ball, and finding the time to get this accomplished is difficult. The key to the evening going off without a hitch is to prepare ahead of time.

As a spouse, you experience as much stress as your Marine when planning for the Ball. You work hard to get the jaw-dropping reaction from your Marine as you walk out in your gown. However, the daily chaos of planning those extra steps can be daunting. You have to find the right gown, make appointments to get your gown fitted and cleaned, make appointments to have your hair and nails done all while balancing your normal schedule – including: RIGHT! the kids and/or pets. A useful piece of advice in getting ready for the big night is to let the MCX, Starch ‘N Stripes and Head to Toe Salon assist you in your preparation. Just make sure to check out all the order and appointment deadlines on MCCSIwakuni.com.

"POINT THAT CAMERA UP AT NIGHT AND SEE WHAT YOUR EYES CAN’T!"

COMMUNITY ARTICLE

ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY IN IWAKUNI by Josh Mineer "Iwakuni's Sky Guy", Community Writer

W

hen was the last time you looked up at the stars? Have you ever seen a star that seemed exceptionally bright and wondered how close it was or if it was even a star at all? Every single night I take time to peer up at the sky and see what is happening. To me, there is nothing more intriguing than astronomy. It has been a lifelong interest and something that will never get old. Most recently, I have delved into the field of astrophotography. Basically I take pictures of anything that has to do with astronomy. From simple objects like the sun, moon, and planets, to more complex deep space objects, like distant galaxies and nebulae. This hobby did not come to be overnight. It was a very long learning experience and quickly became the most expensive hobby I have ever had. It started out with a very simple point and shoot camera and very

8

simple pictures: some wide-angle shots of the moon at dusk usually, occasionally capturing Venus or Jupiter, but they only appeared as tiny bright dots in the picture. Then I purchased my first Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera with interchangeable lenses With the camera, I purchased a basic tripod and from there my adventures in astrophotography really took off. It wasn’t long before I was producing decent results with just my camera and tripod, but I wanted more. I wanted to be able to show someone a photo that I took and have him or her be amazed. This was tough because people see pictures of the stars and astronomy related items on the internet or in magazines, which are typically photos from the Hubble telescope. The other problem I incurred was that Earth is spinning at a whopping 1040mph as it travels around the sun. This causes the stars

P R E V I E W M A G A Z I N E | F I N D U S O N F A C E B O O K : M C C S I WA K U N I

to travel across the sky throughout the night. In order to take the pictures you see here, I need a tool that can move the camera along with the motion of the stars. For this, I use something called an AstroTrac. It allows me to expose my camera for multiple minutes without the stars moving in the frame. This in turn allows much more light to reach the sensor and produces images that are unseen by the naked eye. Even through massive telescopes, we cannot see the colors and details seen here. This is why I love this hobby. With a sensor that is no bigger than two fingertips, I’m able to capture photons of light that have not only travelled for millions and millions of miles, but also for thousands, even millions, of years through space just to reach our tiny blue planet and my camera’s tiny sensor.

HOW TO:

The human eye has terrible night-vision. Without a light source, we really can’t see much at all. Light travels thru space, enters your eye and is processed by the brain to create an image. The good thing about cameras is we can control their brains. Astrophotos need time. If you were to go outside, point your camera up and ‘snap’ a photo of the night sky, you would probably end up with nothing but a black frame. But if you set up your camera on a steady tripod and set your camera to expose for an extended period of time, say 30 seconds, then you’d probably be amazed. Even some point and shoot cameras allow for this. What happens is light from all those distant stars hits the sensor in your camera and it stores the information until you are finished exposing, in this case 30 seconds. Then it uses that information to create an image. Unfortunately, we can’t do this with our eyes because our brain is constantly processing the information. This is why it is best to have a DSLR for astrophotography because you can set the camera to bulb mode and make the exposures as long as you want.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

• Camera (understand the settings and menu options) • Tripod

GETTING STARTED:

• Set camera to manual mode • Set exposure to 30 seconds • Point your camera at a 45° angle • Set the focus to manual and lens on the infinity symbol (∞) • Set the camera to the lowest zoom possible (16-17 mm) • Set your f-stop (the diameter that the shutter will open to allow light in) to as low as possible. For most kit lenses this is around f/3.5. Experiment with your camera’s different settings and have fun. Be sure to look closely at your images and you should notice different celestial objects like nebulae or even galaxies.

WHERE

If you plan on trying this hobby for yourself, there is one more thing you will want to have…a dark sky. The best dark places are the ones high up above the haze. This is often a challenge if you are stuck on base. If you are able to get away then I recommend Mt. Zenitsuboyama. Mt. Zenitsuboyama is located just before Yuu Beach. I’ve travelled to many mountain-tops in the area but my favorite is still Zenitsuboyama. Scan the QR code for complete directions from a MCCS Get Out map!

WHAT TO DO HERE

Photography is a very popular hobby here. Everyone wants to take plenty of pictures while they are in Iwakuni because this is definitely a once in a lifetime chance for most of us. But why settle for simple photography? Wouldn’t you like to show somebody a picture and watch their face light up with amazement and say, did you take this? Point that camera up at night and see what your eyes can’t. Remember, with just a tripod and some know how about your camera, you can achieve great results and you might discover a fun, new hobby to explore while you’re here. ~Clear Skies~

I am regularly approached for advice on how to plan the perfect party. I simply give the same advice my mother gave me as a teenager, when I was working for her catering company. When you first begin the planning process, you must think about 10 very important considerations that are easily overlooked.

D AT E A N D TI ME: WHE N DO YOU WANT TO HAVE Y O U R PARTY ? Pick a date and time that is far enough away to get the planning completed without you scrambling around at the last minute. Catering Manager’s ad vi ce: “ S tar t p l anni ng your party at least two months out from the party date. This way, if something goes wrong, you have time to go to your alternate plan.”

VENUE: WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO HOST YOUR PARTY? To this question, you could have many answers. There are many places around the base available for party reservations. The location will depend on the current season, number of expected guests and your budget, not every location is free of cost. Catering Manager’s advice: “Consider what type of weather you are likely to have, how many guests will attend and your budget.”

Jo

hn

Ba

ss

ALTE R NATE PL ANS: J ust in case something goes wrong, like bad weather or a sudden deployment, have an alternate plan ready. Catering Manager’s advice: “ H a ve a t l e a s t t wo al ternate pl ans you are able to execute.”

Planning a party can be a lot of fun or it could be very stressful. It really depends on how you plan rather than when or what you plan. Party planning is relatively easy if you give yourself enough time to plan it properly.

PREVIEW MAGAZINE

Throughout our nation’s parks, neighborhood yards and local gyms, and growing in popularity, fitness boot camps are as popular today as they were when they were first introduced in the 1980s.Though they share much in common with Marine-style workouts, fitness boot camps today focus on the physical demand and intensity in a one-hour session without the psychological component. Yes, the “in your face” drill instructor may even be a former military member, and there is probably some boot camp chanting going on. However, one thing is certain, the primary goal of civilian fitness boot camps is to provide a workout environment that is less intimidating and more uplifting, while remaining physically challenging. It’s a low cost, efficient way of working out in an environment that creates a supportive and motivating atmosphere that will give you fast results.

COMPONENTS OF A BOOT CAMP Most standard boot camps start with an orientation process that includes individual body composition testing, health history screenings, basic fitness assessments, and rules/regulations. Typically, each session is an hour long and depending on the program, the boot camp can be 4-8 weeks long. Boot Camps are designed to be in an open outdoor space with small groups depending on the number of instructors available. Each session typically consists of 10 minute+ warm up, workout sessions lasting 30-40 minutes, and a 10 minute cool down. Most boot camps use little to no equipment, instead they use your own body’s resistance with exercises like squats, pushups, lunges, plyometrics, sprint drills and more. High intensity interval training is popular in boot camps because the participant burns a large number of calories in a short period of time. Team competitions, partner exercises and obstacle courses are often factored into these workout routines. A legitimate fitness boot camp is teamwork oriented through support and cohesion of all participants. The instructors must first identify specific demographics and cater to those specific goals. You can search and find a wide variety of different boot camps that meet your specific needs. From women or youth to sports specific and weight loss, there are boot camps for all demographics and fitness levels. The list of health benefits is endless: low cost, plus improved heart health, lung capacity, muscle strength and endurance all rolled into one. Most boot camp instructors will offer encouragement rather than intimidation, even though you might find the occasional former military member who still wants to practice his or her drill instructor skills. A big selling point is the challenging and creative routine with qualified instructors at a low cost. If you are looking for a high-energy workout that offers variety and camaraderie, then a boot camp style workout may be your answer. Please contact Semper Fit at IronWorks Gym for more information on upcoming boot camps.

THE ANCIENT SPORT OF SUMO by Nikki Bennett, Community Writer

Six times a year, Japan holds a two-week Sumo Grand Tournament, or Honbasho, with every other tournament held in Tokyo. The other tournaments are scattered through Japan, and in November the tournament comes to Fukuoka. If you haven’t been to a sumo match yet, get to this one! It’s close, and ITT has a trip that will take you to either of the last two days of the tournament.

(for purification) and the higher ranking samurai throw salt into the ring, which is also a purifying ritual and is supposed to prevent them from getting injuries. This part of the show usually is longer than the actual fight, but is just as important. Then the wrestling begins. A wrestler wins by either knocking his opponent out of the ring or by forcing him to touch the ground with any part of his body besides the soles of his feet. Much of the posturing is done by gripping the mawashi – the silk cloth the wrestler wears around his midsection. This cloth is about 10 meters in length and is elaborately folded and tied. By grabbing on to the mawashi, the sumo wrestler can manipulate his opponent.

"HAKKEI-YOI EH"

The sumo tournament is broken into several divisions, depending on the wrestler’s rank. The better he does, the higher he ranks, and the higher the division. The top division is called the makuuchi, and the winner in that group wins the tournament. The next level is juryo, followed by the makushita division. Even lower divisions are available for wrestlers just starting out.

MORE tidbits on the sport of sumo: • Sumo doesn’t have a ton of rules. As long as the wrestler isn’t playing dirty (pulling hair, punching, choking, etc.) anything goes in the attempt to knock the opponent down or out of the ring. • Until they reach the rank of juryo, sumo wrestlers cannot wear the traditional topknot. So if you’re watching wrestlers whose hair isn’t in topknots, you can tell they are lower ranking wrestlers. • Wrestlers eat a special diet, known as chanko. Chanko consists mainly of stews, rice, and deep-fried food.

• Sumo wrestlers normally live in sumo “training stables.” From the time they get up until the time they go to bed, sumo wrestlers’ days are strictly regimented, from what they wear to when they practice to how they eat.

• Sumo wrestlers do not draw a salary until they reach the juryo level. A top wrestler can reach a salary of over $300,000 per year. • All of the match’s fights are taken into consideration to determine the winner, so by the last day, if one wrestler has won enough of his bouts during the two weeks, chances are he’s already the winner, whether he loses the last day or not. But even if this happens, watching the last fight of the match is still loads of fun.

WHAT ARE THEY SAYING? So while you’re in Japan, get to a sumo tournament! Buy a bento and a bottle of sake, get comfy on your tatami mat, vote for your favorite wrestler (mine is Kotooshu) and enjoy the excitement and fun of the GRAND SUMO TOURNAMENT. Catch the exciting Fukuoka Sumo Tournament November 23 & 24 with ITT. See page 12 for more details.

Sumo referees (gyoji) yell several phrases while in the dohyo. Know what they are saying before you go on your Sumo Trip:

"MATTA-NASHI KAMAETE" Time's Up, Prepare Yourselves

"NOKOTTA -NOKOTTA" You're still in it!

"HAKKEI-YOI EH" Good Luck!

Kid’s Web japan: web-japan.org/kidsweb/virtual/sumo/sumo03.html • www.wikipedia.com

Sumo goes way back, almost 2,0 0 0 years, but didn’t evolve as a popular spectator sport until about four hundred years ago. Sumo’s origins are based on Shinto religious ceremonies, so its traditions are very proper and precise. The two opponents ascend to the ring (or dohyo) after the announcer (yobidashi) calls their names (the yobidashi actually sings each name. The higher the rank of the wrestler, the more pronounced and long the song is.) Then the wrestlers posture for about four minutes. During this time they face each other, grimace, stretch, slap themselves to make intimidating noises, wash their mouths with water
