DIRECT DIRECTOR from the

April is Volunteer Appreciation Month and a time that MCCS sets aside ever y year to give thanks for all the support we receive from the community. We could never execute many of our special events and programs without assistance from those of you who volunteer. From our biggest event on Friendship Day, to the Marine Corps Ball, to our Youth Sports Programs, volunteers give their time and energy to assist MCCS and we are most appreciative for what you do. On April 25, air station volunteers will be invited to attend a special luncheon at Club Iwakuni where we can officially say thank you for your support. This is a small token of appreciation for the tremendous work volunteers do supporting our community throughout the year. This month’s feature article highlights one Marine’s definition of Esprit de Corps. The theme of the article defines the bond, commitment and brotherhood one feels being a part of the Marine Corps team. On April 5, we celebrate the Month of the Militar y Child. Join the Family Care Branch for the celebration (253-5549) . Health promotions will also be participating in the Militar y Child celebration by hosting the Kids Color Run on the 5th (253-0551). Check out the details on page 10 and bring the family out for an afternoon of fun. The weekend of April 5-6 also offers something for ever yone, just down the road from the Celebration, stop by IronWorks Gym and check out the Spring Bazaar, brought to you by MCCS Ser vices. “Shop Asia” without leaving the base; we have 24 vendors participating in this event, doors open at 10 AM on Saturday and Sunday (253-4710). One of our biggest joint activities of the year besides Friendship Day is the Kintai Marathon. If you are a running enthusiast, come out and join us run side by side with our Japanese hosts on Saturday, April 13. This annual event ser ves as another great way to enjoy cultural exchange, through the sport of running. The following weekend our kids reassemble for more fun with several events the Saturday prior to Easter; events include an Egg Roll, pool Egg-Stravaganza and more, the details of the day are listed on page 32. On Sunday enjoy a great Easter Brunch at Club Iwakuni (253-3363). For our active duty members only, on April 28, Club Iwakuni/Single Marine Program/Special Events (2533363) bring a night of great entertainment to the air station; our adult ser vice members are invited “For the Leathernecks III Show.” The evening comedy and music is something you won’t want to miss!!! April offers several events that bring our community together, come out and join us in these festivities, stay safe and have fun.

A notice will be sent to the unit commanders reflecting who has not registered by May 9, 2014. If you are going TAD, you are still responsible for having your taxes paid. This can be done with or by Power of Attorney. The Provost Marshals Office will suspend the issuance of new license, registration of new cars and operations of the Japanese Pass and Registration Section during the three day period, so please plan accordingly. Contact Barry Harwell at 253-3161 for more information.

FOOL ME ONCE, SHAME ON YOU. FOOL ME TWICE … by Kieu Garcia, Personal Financial Manager

The military community is a target for scams. It always has been, but with the anonymity offered by the internet the scams have grown in number and complexity. Here are five scams you should avoid:

FACEBOOK SCAMS

Facebook : Since moving to Iwakuni, Facebook has become an integral part of the way I keep in touch with family and friends back home. However, Facebook is a been tempted at some point to download an app or fill out a survey to get something “free” from a vendor on Facebook. If the offer is legitimate, you will see it on the company’s Facebook page. If you are just clicking on a link from a friend’s page, it may be a scam to get your personal information. Another popular scam on Facebook are those viral video links that show up on your news feed. You don’t want to be the only one that hasn’t seen and commented on the video, so you click away. Be careful, by clicking on the link, you could be downloading malicious files. In an article by USA TODAY, facecrooks.com was listed as a site that you can go to for up to date postings of the various scams running on Facebook.

Online Dating: A scammer creates a copy of a service member’s Facebook account. The

as well. Servicemembers are the victim and send money to their internet loves. Don’t be a Manti Te’o. If you haven’t actually met them in person, there are no guarantees they are real.

PAYDAY LENDERS

Payday Lenders: Okay, so this one may not be a scam,

but you should proceed with extreme caution when borrowing money at high interest rates and fees. The Military Lending Act (MLA) has capped interest rates at 36 percent on some consumer loans like payday loans, auto title loans, and tax-refund anticipation loans for active duty military members;

payday lenders are finding ways to skirt the 36% rate provision. The MLA does

There are many other scams out there targeting the military community. I could list them all day long in their various forms; however, subscribing to sites like the Better Business Bureau (BBB) Military Line provides email updates and tips on the latest scams to watch for. I have always thought of the BBB only as a business verification site, but to my delight the BBB’s emails have provided some great tips on the topic of scams. If you should find yourself the victim of a scam, you can file a complaint with the BBB, the Federal Trade Commission or the FBI. M C C S I WA K U N I . C O M | A P R I L 2 0 1 4

here are many definitions and perceptions of what Brotherhood is, but for many Marines it's something that can't be forged in steel or

invented. One must have earned that title to represent the EAGLE, GLOBE and ANCHOR, for it is that bond that exemplifies a Marine's principles, values and traits. We must continue to challenge ourselves to affect change by providing a clear, concise and comprehensive leadership strategy; thus providing a capable and well enforced team of knowledgeable and versed leaders to excel and continue the legacy of our Corps. We must strive to accept responsibility and be willing to take leadership opportunities within the unit and develop the team. It is critical to grow personally and professionally, especially in a leadership role, where resources are available to assist you in developing your technical competence. What follows isn't textbook, but merely an experience.

We must strive to instill leadership at all levels and always remember the

WHAT IS DENIM DAY? MAKE A SOCIAL STATEMENT WITH A FASHION STATEMENT by Sharon Adams, SAPR Command Sexual Assault Response Coordinator layout and photography by Jong Park

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. In an effort to start the conversation among peers, leaders and civilians of the Installation will participate in Denim Day.

WEAR JEANS & A LIGHT BLUE SHIRT

Denim Day

April 4 T

R ic

h a rd C . W ag ne r

The reality is that it could be you. We had a rise in the reporting of Sexual Assaults in 2013. An increased number of males are coming forward, breaking the stereotype that men don't report it if they are sexually assaulted. This demonstrates a positive response to the Command climates changing; allowing members to feel supported when they report Sexual Assault. If you are interested in someone, learn to communicate your intentions to the person and take the right steps in the direction of consent. The theme for Sexual Assault Awareness Month is "Live our values, step up to stop Sexual Assault." Every day we get a chance to protect ourselves and others from Sexual Assault. We are family and if one of us hurts, we all hurt.

SAPR

t i ne Ju s

We have all learned in Sexual Assault training that jeans or anything else that we wear does not constitute consent. A common statement I hear from victims of sexual assault is, "I never thought it would be me."

Jerome

o give a little history lesson, in the late 1990's in Italy, an 18 year old woman was sexually assaulted by her driving instructor. The case went to trial and the offender was found guilty. The case was appealed and reviewed by the Italian Supreme Court. After a few days of deliberation, the Italian Supreme Court voted to overturn the guilty verdict and the offender was released. When asked why the case was reversed the Chief Judge stated, "The victim wore very, very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them, and by removing the jeans it was no longer rape but consensual sex." The women in the Italian Parliament were outraged by the verdict and protested by wearing jeans to work.

You may ask yourself what you can do to prevent Sexual Assault on our Installation? It is important to remember that we all play a part in the prevention of sexual assault.

PROTECT YOURSELF BY FOLLOWING THESE SIMPLE TIPS: • Use the buddy system, leave with the person you came with. • Carry an extra ¥2,000 in case you need to leave a location and you need taxi fare. • Know your limits when it comes to alcohol. • Always be aware of your surroundings. • Keep your doors locked while sleeping.

GIVING BACK, VOLUN

COMMUNITY ARTICLE

M.C. PERRY HIGH VOLUNTEERS by Mr. Victor Rivera, M.C. Perry High School Teacher

As direct evidence of the spirit of volunteerism on MCAS Iwakuni, I have had seniors working at: • MCAS Iwakuni Medical Center working in various departments • M.C. Perry High School as teacher aides

A

pril is National Volunteer Month, which is about people mentoring, recognizing,

and giving back to their respective communities. Here on MCAS Iwakuni, Japan, there is no lack of volunteerism; in fact it is quite the opposite. For example, M.C . Perr y H igh S chool

• AFN learning broadcasting skills • Public Affairs writing articles MCCS Marketing helping with various aspects of the Preview Magazine • Communications building learning the telephone side of the house

seniors are afforded the opportunity to take

• Base Engineering alongside engineers and architects

• PMO in the Ride-Along program

their graduation requirements. The key to

• Youth and Teen Center learning how to manage youth programs

implementing a Career Practicum program successfully is to place these seniors in meaningful worksites or internships within fields that interest them. As the M.C. Perry High School Program Coordinator, fortunately I have found an abundance of people within our community, our base organizations, and within our schools who are more than willing to step up to the plate to provide these high school seniors solid worksite or internship experiences, helping them to further define what career path that they may pursue in the future.

• EDIS learning to work with special needs students

Additionally and as part of the same S.T.E.M. initiative, we also have two Airmen who volunteer during lunch to facilitate the on-going M.C. Perry High School and Middle School Robotics Club, helping students assemble and program robots. So, what could be more fitting than to give a shout-out to all these wonderful volunteers that are partnering with M.C. Perry High School during the National Volunteer Month, acknowledging the great work they do to support our M.C. Perry High School students.

• CBRN exploring how contamination is handled

Kudos!

• MCCS Aquatics helping to organize various events As another example, we are implementing an S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program with twenty-five eighth graders that meet once a week for about an hour and a half with Engineers and Architects from Base Engineering to work on a variety of handson S.T.E.M. projects facilitated by S.T.E.M. professionals.

"Here on MCAS Iwakuni, Japan, there is no lack of volunteerism; in fact it is quite the opposite."

SAMURAI SPEAKS "Career Practicum at MCCS Marketing has been such a plentiful experience", said Lakeyia Brown, a career practicum student. "The Marketing office have really contributed to my learning experience and knowledge of the field in the time frame of a few months, helping me to really understand and grasp what Marketing is and how essential it is to business", continued Ms. Brown. As a result of her internship with the Marketing Department, Ms. Brown has learned the 4 P's of Marketing: Product, Price, Promotion, and Placement where Mr. McHenry has been instrumental in helping her to understand the marketing process. Moreover, Lakeyia has been given the opportunity to work on her own projects that have been published in the Preview magazine, a real accomplishment that Lakeyia appreciates.

TEERISM IN IWAKUNI COMMUNITY ARTICLE

GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY by Jennifer Carr, L.I.N.K.S. Trainer

B

ecoming a volunteer is your way to

Quotes From Local Volunteers:

give back to the community that is very rewarding ! Not only are you able to give

back but you are also able to create bonds with the people whom you volunteer with as well. One of the easiest ways to make friends in your new community is to join in the shared activity of volunteering. You are able to strengthen the ties to your new community, and strengthen the bonds of friendship with those around you.

People who volunteer are just happier in general and who doesn’t want to be happy? Volunteering doesn’t have to be hard work, most of the time you are out there having fun while giving back. Within Marine Corps Family Team Building we have a lot of different opportunities to volunteer, and each and every one of them is FUN.

Semper Style comes around every year right in time for the Marine Corps Ball. Annually, we get spouses and Marines to come together to put on a fantastic fashion show. There is music, food, smiles and laughs all around. Operation Comfort and Care comes around during the holidays and is where we have volunteers collect non-perishable items and box them up to send out to those who are deployed. Coming together to support deployed troops is extremely rewarding. B eing a L .I.N.K. S. Mentor means our volunteers present different L.I.N.K.S. sections to Marines, Spouses, Kids and Teens every month. We have those who present, those who cook, and those who just come to mingle and meet folks who are new to the Iwakuni area. Everything we do is surrounded by showing others our love for not only each other but the military lifestyle as well. "Bloom where you are planted" is something you will hear as a military spouse no matter where you go. Give back, create bonds, strengthen friendships and most of all have fun! April is Volunteer Appreciation Month and we will be holding a volunteer appreciation luncheon on April 25 from 11 AM - 1 PM.

Volunteering was a way that made me realize that I wasn't the only one dealing with "Military Spouse " issues. And as a mentor, I was able to help other spouses (like the ones who helped me) in the same situations as I went thru and learned from. A bonus to mentoring and volunteering is making new friends/family that last a lifetime. -Sabrina Bianchi

Nancy Arnold

Volunteering with L.I.N.K.S. has been a blessing because It reminds me when I first came on base those who volunteered their time and energy to make things a lot more welcoming and comfortable for me. It feels good to pay it forward.

"I have been volunteering for many years, I enjoy helping other spouses learn about the Marine Corps; knowledge is power! I have also conquered a fear of getting up in front of people and speaking, I still don't look forward to it but it is getting easier. "

Debra McDermott

"Volunteering as a L.I.N.K.S. mentor has allowed me to make new friends quickly and share my experience as a military wife with others." Jessica C. Guthrie -Jessica C. Guthrie

Gerald Ong

"Volunteering is great because as a Marine we are supposed to look out for one another and take care of one another so by helping each other it also means helping out the family and the community. Being able to volunteer for the community is a perfect way to do so."

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH

Be Steve and stop Herobrine!

by Heather I. Payne MA, CACII, Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist

Being a kid is hard enough with the pressures of schoolwork and growing up, but there are often other things that can be challenging for kids. A study in 2011 showed that bullying is a problem in schools as 20% of students in Grades 9-12 reported that they experienced some form of bullying. So, just what is bullying? 4 types of bullying Verbal bullying is the act of saying or

writing mean things. Some examples are teasing, name calling, taunting, and threatening to cause harm. Social bullying (also known as relational bullying) is the act of hurting someone’s reputation or relationships. This includes

hand gestures. Cyber bullying is a new kind of bullying that involves electronic technology such as cell phones, iPads, or computers. It can be mean text messages and rumors sent by email or posted on social networking sites such as Facebook.

LASTING EFFECTS

Bullying can leave long lasting scars on the victim that may include negative physical, educational, and mental health issues. Bullied children are more prone

signs are: unexplained injuries, lost or destroyed clothing, changes in eating habits, sudden loss of friends or avoidance of social situations, and feelings of helplessness and/ or decreased self-esteem.

WHO CAN HELP You do not have to live with being bullied because there IS help for you. Some of the available resources aboard MCAS Iwakuni are: Behavioral Health counselors, teachers, g u idance counselor s, adult s, past or s, Chaplains, t r usted f r iends and family. Someone is always willing to listen to you!

HOW TO GET HELP If you are a witness to anyone being bullied, take a positive approach and inform an adult or someone you trust. The role of others is important in stopping bullying in its tracks.

While you may experience bullying, it does not mean that you cannot survive it. With the help of a positive support group and talking about the issue, you will know that you will get through it.

Words of a Survivor:

“It felt like I was not supposed to exist when I was treated like a filthy thing at school. Anything I touched became ‘defiled’ and kids dreaded touching those things. I thought, ‘It’ll do a favor to the world if I died’. My healing process began when I heard that I was not a scum of the earth, but I was created with purpose. People at church stepped in and showed me love by their actions, and I learned genuine love and forgiveness. Later, I learned that those kids were also hurt by what they did to me when they apologized to me at our class reunion. It was a blessing to have our relationship healed. I also learned that my experiences can be useful to help others because I understand the pain of rejection. You are neither what happened to you in your life nor what others make you feel like. Do not isolate yourself but seek help from someone you can trust.” ~Anonymous M C C S I WA K U N I . C O M | A P R I L 2 0 1 4
