DIRECT DIRECTOR from the
As we begin the process of wrapping up the year in Iwakuni, I’d like to thank each and ever y one of you for your participation and support in making our community great throughout the year. I also want to thank our MCCS and Station staff for the many hours of effort they put into making this year’s Nav y and Marine Corps Birthday Balls a big success. The addition of parachutes in the gym for the Marine Corps Ball really looked good. December 1st, recognizes World Aids Day, in solidarity of the 34 million people living with HIV worldwide. One way to show your support is to wear the universal symbol of a red ribbon. Please pin it on as a symbol that we can all recognize to continue raising awareness and support for the cure of this disease. Holidays afford us the opportunity to come together as a community, and we’re happy to host many events that offer that chance. I encourage you to reach out to our newcomers and invite them to festivities that help celebrate the season. Club Iwakuni will be offering their amazing Holiday Buffet that allows you to indulge, without the fuss of cooking or cleaning. To add to the holiday mix, stop by the MCX to get photos with Santa to send home to the family. That will surely spread our Iwakuni holiday cheer to long distance loved ones. If you find you’re ready to work off those inevitable temptations consumed over the season, sign up for the Jingle Bell Jog being held on December 20. You can’t go wrong with prizes, games, music, free food, costume contests and Santa Claus all wrapped up in a healthy 1.5K Fun Run. If you’re feeling adventurous, join IT T in visiting historic Kyoto for a three day trip from December 24-26. Another great opportunity with Outdoor Recreation is to join the Mizuho Ski/Snowboard Trip on December 27. This year has had many special events and community gatherings to be thankful for. The next year can only get better! I am inspired by the amount of participation that I’ve seen over the past year in our events and programs created to make our lives more enjoyable and fulfilled. Here’s to another successful year in Iwakuni. Stay safe, and happy holidays! “Semper Fi” John Iwaniec Marine Corps Community Ser vices Director MARKETING WELCOMES ANISE TO THE TEAM!

Mikans - popular gifts at New Year's
Kadomatsu - the a traditional decoration seen in front of homes and businesses from Christmas until mid-January
The Japanese New Year holiday, called Shogatsu, is celebrated on January 1 and is one of the most important holidays of the year. Culturally rooted in the Chinese lunar calendar, Shogatsu was originally celebrated on the same day as the contemporary Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese New Year's, but since 1873 the Japanese holiday has aligned with the Western Gregorian calendar. Japanese families typically visit the local Buddhist temple (otera) on New Year’s Eve, where the temple bell is rung 108 times to symbolically cleanse people of the 108 worldly sins and desires of traditional Buddhist belief. On New Year’s Day, many people visit one or more local shrines (jinja) to pray for good fortune in the coming year. Oftentimes, people climb a mountain to view the first sunrise of the new year. In Iwakuni, many people gather at Iwakuni Castle on January 1 to watch the sunrise.
On the first few days of the new year, Japanese people eat osechi-ryori, the traditional cuisine that can be prepared in advance so people can avoid cooking on the first three days of the new year, which was once thought to be taboo. The osechi often consists of three tiered boxes filled with sweet, sour, or dried dishes such as boiled seaweed, fish cakes, mashed sweet potatoes with chestnut, simmered burdock room, and sweet black soybeans. Similar to the American custom of sending Christmas cards, the Japanese send postcards (nengajo) to friends and family at New Year's. The cards are sent to arrive on the first day of January, and if postmarked within a certain time frame, the Japanese post office guarantees their delivery on the 1st. Naomi Leeman
Naomi is an illustrator and designer with roots in the Midwest, but currently living and working from Iwakuni. She travels the world sketching and searching for unique, handcrafted treasures. Check out her website or Facebook page to see more examples of her work!

STAY WARM THIS WINTER TAKE A TRIP OVERSEAS
by Nikki Bennett, Community Writer
W
hen most people think of the winter holidays, they think of snowball fights, hot chocolate by the fireplace, and caroling in the snow. But if you’re the type of person who dreams of lying on a beach, going on a jungle hike, or shopping for presents in shorts, you might want to travel some place warm for the holidays. Here are a few amazing places that are not too hard to get to from Japan, and will keep you feeling toasty: Direct flights from Hiroshima airport take about four hours.
Taiwan Taipei in December is wonderful. Still warm, but not as hot as down in the tropics, this city boasts a plethora of family activities. Take the gondola up Maokong Mountain and sample the wonderful teas they produce there. Head to the National Palace Museum and check out the vast collection of treasures from the Forbidden City. Sample the amazing dim-sum at a local restaurant. Ring in the New Year with a fantastic fireworks display over Taipei’s tallest skyscraper, Taipei 101. Or, hop on Taiwan’s great train system, and explore the rest of the island! Direct flights from Hiroshima airport take about three hours.
Guam is a U.S. territory, so it’s pretty easy to navigate. The island of Guam isn’t that big, but it has plenty of warm beaches to lounge on. You can stay cheap at a military base and play golf to your heart’s content, or head for the hotels that line Tumong’s crescent-shaped lagoon. Most hotels serve a special Christmas dinner and provide other entertainment.
Hong Kong They do up Christmas right in Hong Kong. Once an English territory, Hong Kong still has that Colonial flavor. Take a nighttime rickshaw bus tour and marvel at all the Christmas lights clinging to the skyscrapers. Cruise Victoria Harbor on an old-fashioned junk. Head down to Lantau Island and explore the amazing Big Buddha and temples there. And don’t forget to get all your Christmas shopping done in Causeway Bay or the Jade Market in Kowloon.
Bali
Expect about six hours or so to get from Hiroshima. It takes a little longer to get to Bali (the fastest is about 10 hours) but it’s well worth the trip to visit this Indonesian paradise.
Thailand
Bali is on the other side of the equator, so December is summer there. Soak up the equatorial rays at one of Bali’s magnificent beaches. Or, head to the interior, where you’ll find plenty of hiking, amazing Hindu temples, and the wonderful town of Ubud, with its monkey forest and old palace. You can even charter a trip to nearby Komodo Island and mar vel at the Komodo dragons in their natural habitat.
A direct flight from Fukuoka lasts about 5 hours and 30 minutes.
W h e t h e r y o u’r e h e ad i ng f o r Bangkok’s city lights or escaping to one of Thailand’s multitude of beaches, you’ll stay toasty in Thailand. Some fun things to do: Visit the World Heritage Site of Ayutthaya , and don’t forget to check out the amazing Water Market near there. Explore the temples and palaces in Bangkok. Head up north, and visit the Elephant Nature Park, an elephant sanctuary.

SEMPER FIT ARTICLE
F
or those of us who enjoy the stoke of shredding through fresh powder, it is vital to prepare our bodies for the upcoming snow season. Whether snowboarding or skiing, downhill or park, back country or cross country, our bodies need to be prepared to withstand long periods of stabilizing, and more importantly landing in odd positions which sometimes includes landing on body parts other than our feet. Snow sports are full of jumps and tumbles, twists and turns, falls and f lips. The specificity principle asserts that the best way to be prepared for an activity or sport is to the train the energy systems and muscles in a way that closely mimics the way they will be used for that sport or activity.
Strength: The lower body will endure much of the abuse when participating in snow sports. Your legs will be flat out tired after a long day on the slopes. Wall-sits, squats, squat jumps, lunges, and lateral bounding are simple bodyweight movements which will improve stability and endurance in the hamstrings, quadriceps and glutes. The triceps, shoulders, and back need to be strong to control ski poles and need to be able to recover from the unfortunate times when we may lose control and take a roll on a hard packed slope. Push-up variations, pull-ups, and dips are simple and effective ways to improve your upper body’s ability to take a fall. Train your full body 2-3 times per week. Keep the reps high and weight low to best prepare your body for the snow season. Core: You k new it was com ing‌ a comprehensive program cannot exclude, the core. It is important to focus on movements which strengthen the lower back, hips, hamstrings, and the abdominals. The core can be trained with movements as simple as single leg balancing to more advanced movements such as suspended lateral planks. Train your core at least 2-3 times per week and be sure at least one of those sessions includes balance training.

Rest and Recovery: Take 1-2 days per week to focus on recovery. Use modalities such as foam rolling, suspension training, and the pool to keep your body mobile while facilitating recovery from your previous training sessions. Ensure that you are taking in at least half your bodyweight in ounces of water daily and that you are fueling for performance by eating clean whole foods such as brown rice, lean proteins, and fresh fruits and veggies. Reaching peak conditioning for an activity doesn’t happen overnight. Depending on the individual, it can take 6-12 weeks to properly prepare the body for a specific activity. Hiroshima Prefecture area ski and snowboard resorts see the best snow conditions starting in February, about 12 weeks from now, which gives you just enough time to get slope ready. For more information on performance training for snow sports, contact Health Promotions at 253-6359.
For you cold weather junkies, get your skis and snowboards tuned and waxed before you head up to the slopes.
EDGE TUNE $10 / WAX $10 Energy System Development: Train in heart rate zones which mimic those of being on the slopes. Snow sports can be deceiving to on lookers – snowboarders and skiers seem to glide effortlessly down the mountain. However, your heart rate will bounce between endurance zones (think long distance running) to anaerobic zones (think all out sprinting) so it is important to vary your training. Participate in cardiovascular exercise 3-5 times a week for 30-60 minutes each session. Ensure that 1-2 of your weekly sessions get your heart pumping hard with some sprint work. You can jog, cycle, row, skip, sprint and more – just get it done!

Why Read Every Day? by Teena Livengood, MCPES Literacy Support Specialist
There's a strong correlation between a child's ability to read and his/ her academic performance. Reading improves academic performance. Success in school depends greatly on a child's ability to read. Reading is also a bonding experience. Our lives are busy with work, school, chores, after school actives, and more. Take time, a minimum of 20 minutes daily, spending quality time together reading. If your child is beyond the snuggling stage, you can still read together. Take turns reading a page and discussing longer stories. Books can inspire conversations about novel topics and feelings within a family. Reading provides an enriching brain activity and bonding time for families!
Here are some great questions to lead them to thinking beyond the text and using critical thinking:
