DIRECT DIRECTOR from the

Time goes quickly and the month of May is already upon us. With Friendship Day right around the corner I want to extend my sincere appreciation for all the assistance the Station and volunteers have provided MCCS. As you might know all the proceeds from Friendship Day, go directly in suppor t our communit y and upcoming events. The month of May is best known for Mother’s Day. It’s always wonder ful to have a day to say thanks to our mothers and our wives who take care of us ever y day; there is never a task to great or too small that they don’t do for of us. Club Iwakuni of fers a fantastic Mother’s Day Brunch. So reser ve your spot today and enjoy great food, great company and give Mom that much needed break she deser ves. May is also Memorial Day, a time of remembrance for those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our countr y. This is also a time to remember and thank our wounded warriors whose lives have dramatically changed due to the tragedies of war. Amidst the excitement of planning our summer outings, BBQs and celebration, the Depar tment of Defense obser ves Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage month. The Asian/ Pacific American designation spans over 50 geographic and language groups including native Hawaiians and those from other Pacific Islands. Our nation is especially unique in celebrating our unit y as Americans as well as embracing the many cultures and languages represented by our citizen’s ancestral background. We are in a per fect location to venture out to several countries and witness these traditions first hand. I encourage our communit y to explore the many great places our host nation of fers as well, MCCS has great packages to make sightseeing easy and fun. Sign up in May for our June Cultural Adaptation trips (253-6161). On June 7, join our Rice Planting trip, June 13 venture out to a local grocer y store to learn basics about shopping in Japan and end June with our cultural tour of Yamaguchi Flower Land. Sign-ups star t this month; reser ve your seat because they fill up quickly! Information, Tours and Travel (253-4 377) of fers a full line-up of travel in May with trips to Kyoto, Tok yo, Hello Kit t y Harmony land, Dolphin Watching and the historic canal town of Bikan. Don’t forget to sign up this month for the June trips to Sasebo, Osaka and Tok yo. For those of us who want or need to stay close, MCCS has several activities aboard the air station for the family. There is no reason to be bored, because Board Game Nights at the Librar y are back by popular demand throughout the month of May. Call 253-3078 or stop by the Librar y for details. On May 17, Armed Forces Day, stop by Penny Lake to join in a host of activities. The MCCS Kennel (253-6471) along with the Vet Clinic host Pet Day with information and activities in a pet friendly environment and Athletics (253-565 4) hosts the Strongman Competition where par ticipants show their stuf f for bragging rights. The Retail and Ser vices Division joins in the competitive spirit with MCCS Ser vices of fering t wo competitions in May. Head to Toe Salon (253-6750) gives the communit y a show of their ar tistic talents with a Nail Design Contest (May 1-21) and Ser vices Plus (253-4723) is hosting a Plaque Design competition running from May 1-17. MCCS Athletics features several events that tie in with National Physical Fitness and Spor ts Month. Our Youth Spor ts program (253-3239) wraps up their baseball season with Closing Ceremonies at Penny Lake Field on May 31. Youth Spor ts also hosts the America’s Kids Run on May 16. The big kids will be on the field for Intramural Spor t’s (253-3067) Memorial Day Sof tball Tournament from May 24 -26 at Penny Lake. Last of all I would like to add, if you have any great ideas or suggestions please get them to me by contacting Michelle Asato my MCCS coordinator at 253-4109. One of our recent suggestions was to provide a place where people can print papers and photos and have use of a FA X machine. We are working to provide this ser vice in the librar y. I will let you know when this is complete. We will also be adding some knit ting and crochet items in the MCX and have already placed them on order. Have a great month of May and please be safe. “Semper Fi” John Iwaniec Marine Corps Communit y Ser vices Director

HOW TO BECOME A by Nikki Bennett, Community Writer

If you’re near Kyoto and want to have a fun day with the kids (or just yourself if you don’t have kids) head into the mountains near Kyoto and visit the Ninja Training Village. For about ¥4,000($40) you can spend the day dressing up like a ninja, trying out different ninja stunts, visiting a ninja museum and a house equipped with a bunch of cool ninja gadgets. You’ll even get an excellent barbecue lunch! We took the ITT group trip last year and had loads of fun. We spent the night in Otsu, about an hour’s drive from the village right on Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan. Then, we headed out for our fun-filled and adventurous ninja day. Our trip took place in the dead of summer, so we were dripping with sweat before we even got the ninja costumes on. The costumes are authentic in the style, but I’m pretty sure no real ninja would dress in a pink uniform like I did. After we got all gussied up, we visited the ninja museum, full of cool stuff like ninja uniforms, scrolls, throwing stars and grappling hooks. Then, our English speaking guide showed us the Ninja House. This house is tricked out with revolving walls, secret tunnels, and a room with a ceiling that drops on the unsuspecting intruder below. A hidden sand trap sits right next to the entrance door and, if an intruder steps on it, he’ll plummet into a containment cell below. We climbed all through the house and checked out the secret passages, including the hidden second story where you can cut the rope that holds the secret ceiling in place. We then headed out to the obstacle course, where we scaled stone walls, sneaked along house eaves, crept across logs, and tried “walking” on water (which ended up in a good dunking for most of us). In between all this, we ate an excellent barbecue lunch (Korean barbecue style where you grilled your own meats and vegetables–really yummy and satisfying after a morning of ninja activities.) The Ninja Village also has a pretty short, but fun for the kids zip line and a range where you can try your hand at using throwing stars. We had a lot of fun. We got muddy, wet, and were dripping from the heat, and by the time we left I think everyone (even the kids) were pretty whupped. A nice Chinese dinner at the Otsu Prince Hotel revved us back up, and we took a stroll along Lake Biwa before bed. So, if you’re up around Kyoto and have a day to kill, check out the Ninja Training Village! You’ll have loads of fun, English speaking guides are on hand, and if you’ve ever wanted to play Ninja, The Ninja Training Village is the place to do it. Sign-ups for the next ITT Ninja Trip starts on May 6 see page 12 for details or call 2534377 for details.

Japanese culture places great value on presentation and appearance. From the finest of kimonos to formal business attire, the Japanese ensure that their appearance is appropriate for all occasions. One form of Japanese dress you’ll see on both men and women this summer is the yukata (浴衣). The yukata is a casual version of the kimono, and is traditionally worn after bathing in a communal bath. Over time, the yukata has become a common garment to wear to summer festivals and fireworks displays as they are unlined and made from cotton to keep cool during the hot summer months. Yukatas are known to be very comfortable to wear and are worn with a narrow sash (obi) and wooden clogs (without Japanese socks). Though yukatas are comfortable and informal, the importance of presentation is not compromised. The robe is fastened correctly and colors and patterns are worn according to age. Bright, vibrant colors and flowers are often worn by younger generations, while darker geometric shapes decorate those worn by the more mature. Streets with crowds dressed in yukatas produce scenes reminiscent of past centuries. Though the yukata’s use has evolved over time, the importance of presentation has remained timeless within the Japanese culture.

It’s not uncommon to see a Japanese man at the park wearing a business suit or a Japanese woman in a skirt and high heels climbing a mountain. You’ve probably seen it if you’ve been on station for more than a week because it's considered polite in this (and many) cultures to look your best when you go out. That doesn’t mean you need to be in business attire every time you leave base, but it’s better to be dressed nicer than you think you need to be than walking into a restaurant to realize you and your friends are the only ones in jeans and t-shirts getting stares. Even worse, you may be asked to leave if you aren’t dressed for the occasion and you may miss out on some fantastic cultural experiences. By all means, dress comfortably. You can bet you’ll do plenty of walking when you leave the air station, so be prepared for that, but also be prepared to freshen up your look. One quick way to dress up any outfit – for men and women – is with a blazer. Find one that’s light and comfortable and is a material that won’t wrinkle too easily and carry it with you. Our tailor on base and many stores in town will tailor it for you to make sure you have a nice fit. This is also useful for staying a bit warmer during Japan’s surprise rainstorms and gusty summer winds. Carrying a handkerchief may seem old school, but they come in handy on warm or moist days

Clothing can be used to express yourself, your personality or give people that feeling of confidence. However, there are some important rules to remember. MCO P1020.34G, with changes 1-5, explains the guidelines for what is acceptable in civilian attire for all Marines. In addition, Marine Corps Air Station Policy Letter 2-11 outlines the clothing standards for all personnel aboard the station: military, civilian, and family members. All personnel should be aware of the rules set forth in these documents to avoid being denied access to station services. The styles of the day are too numerous and are constantly changing to list each of them individually, there are some basic guidelines listed in these documents that can assist in determining what is appropriate. They are listed below: • Undershirts are not appropriate as outerwear. • Also prohibited as outerwear is tank top style shirts/ jerseys, halter tops, tube tops, swimsuit tops and see through mesh tops. • The size and fit of trousers, shorts or skirts will present a neat appearance (oversized trousers do not reflect a neat appearance and are not appropriate for wear). • Head gear is not authorized for wear inside all station facilities. • Articles of clothing that expose the midriff are prohibited. • Trousers, shorts, skirts and dresses shouldn’t expose skin above the mid-thigh and should be of a length, fit and style to maintain proper modesty. • Trousers that are torn, soiled, excessively “baggy”, expose underwear or buttocks or hanging off the buttocks are prohibited.

Different cultures have polarizing opinions on what shade of skin is beautiful, but most typically agree that healthy is always a good thing. In Japan, many people keep their skin covered from their neck to their feet at all times, even going as far to wear gloves and wide-brimmed hats to protect their faces and the backs of their necks. You don’t need to go that far, but you should still take measures to protect your skin. Sunblock is a well-known and easily acquired tool to keep the sun’s ultraviolet rays from harming you. All skin-types should wear at least an SPF 30 and if your skin is lighter, consider a higher SPF like 50 or 80. Don’t forget to reapply, especially if you’re sweating or you get wet. If reapplying throughout the day doesn’t fit your lifestyle, try carrying a parasol or an umbrella. There are plenty of shapes, styles, and colors available, so you’re bound to find something you love and don’t mind carrying. There's no need to feel self-conscious about carrying it around with you. It’s a very popular accessory in Japan and many stores have racks right inside the door for you to place your umbrella or parasol when you walk in, then you just grab it on your way out. Your last fashion-accessoryturned-health-precaution is a pair of UV blocking sunglasses. Your eyes are made of sensitive membranes that can sunburn just as easily as skin – it looks a lot like your eyes are bloodshot and is very painful, so avoid it with your favorite pair of shades while protecting your vision. Keep them handy; just avoid fashion faux pas like wearing them inside or after the sun has set.

• Athletic attire designed for using during athletic activities, such as running shorts, swim suits, sweat pants, should be worn during those events or while beach/pool side. • All articles of clothing with patches, logos, slogans, words, pictures or symbols either printed or embroidered containing profane, sexually suggestive, obscene, and/or glamorizing alcohol, illegal activity or drugs is prohibited. Each individual is considered to be an ambassador of the United States while stationed in Japan, even if only for a short time. The clothing should reflect credit upon oneself, the United States and not conflict with the accepted attire of the host country. Japan is a leader in fashion, however their style is traditionally modest and conservative, so while venturing outside the gates remember that the same rules apply. In addition, practice good Operational Security before leave the station • Avoid wearing clothing with military logos and military branding, like moto-gear, that could potentially make the wearer even more of a target for threats and anti-base groups than normal. • Avoid running off base, especially in groups, as it is a safety concern and could cause traffic congestion or an accident. • Be aware of host nation sensitivities related to wearing uniforms off base, showing tattoos, and exposing to much skin. To avoid making a bad call on the appropriate civilian attire, ask a neighbor, an NCO, a SNCO, a friend or co-worker first and dress up for the occasion instead of dressing down.

SEMPER FIT

by Tasha Friedell, Outdoor Recreation Manager

Over the winter months, various units requested to participate in the new, high-adventure program called Operation Adrenaline Rush (OAR) on MCAS Iwakuni. While this program is new to Iwakuni it has been growing at other Marine Corps bases in the states over the past couple of years. MCAS Yuma and MCAS Lejeune were the first bases to participate in this MCCS Headquarters initiated program in 2011. Iwakuni, Cherry Point, Miramar, Pendleton and Beaufort followed suit in 2012.

>>> What is Operation Adrenaline Rush? The Operation Adrenaline Rush Program combines Combat and Operational Stress Control (COSC) Principles with an Outdoor Recreation adventure activity to aid in mitigating boredom and high-risk behavior of recently deployed Marines. While this program was originally geared towards servicemembers returning from deployment, the OAR team in Iwakuni has managed to change its focus allowing any unit to participate in an activity at least once throughout the year.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

What is its purpose?

OAR provides a vehicle to assist Marines with re-integration by maintaining combat readiness, reinforcing unit cohesion, contributing to an improved climate perception and empowering small-unit leaders with necessary tools. For MCAS Iwakuni, whether this training is taken before or after deployment it teaches servicemembers the importance of taking care of each other and reminding them that through all of the stress of work and being away from family, their unit can have fun with each other from time to time participating in these outdoor recreation activities.

>>> WHY?

>>>>>>>>>

MCCS Headquarters and Iwakuni Outdoor Recreation have pushed for this program locally in order to build unit cohesion and readiness before or after tense workdays, exercises or deployments. This program can be very beneficial to this base and in the past year the Outdoor Recreation Office has been committed to building their inventory in preparation for this program. Every unit should take advantage of this opportunity. The program at Iwakuni will focus the program towards Unit Cohesion and Readiness before or after deployments, exercises or stressful situations.

typical OAR cycle: 1. SNCO or above requests a trip through Outdoor Recreation Manager (prior chain of command approval required). 2. Reservation is confirmed/not confirmed based on activity, transportation, staff availability dates and training by Outdoor Recreation staff. 3. Training is conducted by approved OAR Instructor. 4. Unit participates in Outdoor Recreation Activity (which includes an After Action Report).

>>> What activities can we participate in? The Outdoor Recreation Office has already set up logistics for skiing/snowboarding, Hikari Beach Day (includes water trampoline, wakeboarding, SUP boards, sailing and tubing), rafting and airsoft for larger groups. Smaller groups can enjoy deep sea fishing, sea kayaking and rock climbing.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

What Else?

The OAR program is open to all active duty servicemembers. Arrangements can be made for large units to go on various days to accommodate all participants. Transportation, equipment, participation fee and lunch (depending on the activity) is provided free of charge to the participants. All requests must be made at least two weeks prior to the requested event date.

*Any further information or questions can be directed to Outdoor Recreation Management at 253-3842, or ombiwaoutdoorrec@usmc-mccs.org

MCFTB ARTICLE

MILITARY MARRIAGES:

The Cultural Differences by Miyuki Gray, Japanese L.I.N.K.S. Trainer

Everyone needs to feel loved.... We all have what best-selling author Gary Chapman terms as an “emotional love tank” which can only be filled by our one and only. Maybe you have found love here in Japan and are ready to take the next step in your relationship and get married. Because you are marrying someone from another country, instead of thinking about reception halls and guest lists you may have more imminent and practical concerns. Maybe you are thinking about the marriage laws of your host country and what will happen come PCS time if your paperwork isn’t completed. Will you be able to extend and stay at this duty station, or do you have to move back to the States? If you and your partner want children, what primary language will your children speak? Will your children be able to communicate with you if your spouse communicates solely in one language? Even though you may have many questions and concerns about this new transition together, there are resources at your disposal here in Iwakuni to help you make sense of it all. Below, you will find a few topics which many servicemembers have noted as important things to consider.

PCS Orders:

We can all expect to receive PCS orders at some point. However, have you ever thought that you may receive orders and the paperwork to get married is still processing? It happens. This kind of situation can be complicated and create anxiety for both of you if there are difficulties with obtaining certain documents. You may find answers to questions that aren’ t what you want to hear. What happens if your partner becomes pregnant? Will she be able to PCS back to the States? Emotions run high, especially when there is a language barrier and you have to PCS sooner than you expected.

Values

What you may not have thought about earlier is how your values and your spouse’s values will affect your marriage. Living in another country, differences between cultural values can be seen, but what do those differences mean when you become married? For example, the Japanese place great emphasis on honesty, patience, harmony, team work, and composure. Most Japanese women are very shy and sometimes may feel intimidated to speak in English. How will this affect your marriage if your values are about challenge, change, and opinions? You may encourage your spouse to express her feelings but she was brought up to keep her opinions to herself. Will that eventually cause conflict?

Equality

In Japan, men and women fall into very traditional roles of husband and wife. Husbands are in charge of providing for the family and wives are discouraged from working because their place is to take care of the children and extended family members. Maybe you want your partner to share in the financial responsibility of the household. But what happens if your partner was brought up to have no part in financial matters? How will this affect your family? It takes time to truly understand another individual and even longer when there is a language barrier and drastic cultural differences. In order for a marriage to grow and be successful, each partner must be utterly open and discuss his/her needs and expectations. An intercultural marriage is no different. If anything, more emphasis lies on learning how to communicate effectively with your partner. The cultural differences and processes in an overseas military marriage may seem daunting. But, with the right partner and the right perspective your future will be filled with happiness, no matter how difficult the present may seem.

by Roland Kallead, Traffic Safety Instructor Riding motorcycles in Japan is a little different than in most places back home especially if we are coming from flat land areas. Japan is a mountainous country. Several pointers for riders that some people overlook or are just not aware of:

1

Recommend have long sleeve shirt at a minimum (preferably a jacket with padding), full finger gloves, DOT, SNELL or Locally approved helmet, Goggles or face shield, denim jeans and over the ankle boots. Highly recommended to have (reflective gear at night and bright colors all the time)

2

Stop by Typhoon Motors to have a professionally trained motorcycle mechanic maintain your bike. You can also perform maintenance yourself at the Auto Hobby Shop to ensure your bike will be in favorable condition.

3

The mountains have wild animals including BOAR, TANUKI (RACCOON DOG), JAPANESE WEASELS, MONKEY (YES IN IWAKUNI), DEER and BEAR to mention a few. River/ stream areas have TURTLES that can be like large rocks too.

4

6

7

9

10 5

Tunnels are colder than outside temperature, create moisture, and develop moss and mold especially at entrances and exits.

8

The mountains are full of winding roads and super sharp switchbacks that create blind curves. You must negotiate the curves properly.

THE STREETS • Streets have coral dust which makes them more slippery when wet. • Paint on street is slippery even when dry. • Man hole covers, train tracks, and steel grates are slippery in Japan even when dry.

Ride like nobody is looking for you so you are more alert. Usually when a car hits a motorcycle, the first reason from driver was "I DID NOT SEE THE BIKE". Yes it will probably be the driver's fault but the driver will not feel the pain, you the rider will and in case you do not know, IT HURTS. So ride with your head on a swivel and act like your life depends on it because it reality, "IT DOES".

Single vehicle motorcycle accidents rarely occur in straight roads, it's usually in a curve and the reason is ENTRY SPEED.

Splitting traffic or passing up on the Left side is allowed in certain situations for certain two wheel vehicles, if you do not know when/if it is ok, don't do it or it may hurt a lot. Just because the locals do it does not mean it is right or legal.

NEVER party the night before a ride or ride with someone who did party the night before the ride. It can be painful if you are lucky and deadly if unfortunate.

Safety tips brought you by Roland, The Cape Fox Professional Services, Traffic Safety Instructor. For more information on traffic safety classes offered at the air station please email rkallead@capefox-ps.com

S A M U R A IS P E A K S

I have been in Iwakuni for almost two years, and a major benefit of coming here was the support from Mr. Clark and the Youth and Teen Center here. Last month, Mr. Clark and the teen center had a major toy giveaway to children ranging from newborns to pre-teens. The Iwakuni Boys & Girls club has a partnership with the Toy Industry Foundation. The Toy Industry Foundation distributes toys to about 4-6 military installations a year. This year MCAS Iwakuni was selected. I got to capture the moments and the smiles by taking pictures of so many kids receiving their gifts, and nothing can top the excitement of the children and parents alike. Mr. Clark runs the most efficient and supportive teen center for children on any military installation I have been on since I have been alive. Needless to say, his teens and pre-teens are always taken care of. Through the Boys & Girls Club programs, he provides students with many opportunities to express themselves in a positive manner. The MCAS Iwakuni Youth and Teen Center has been an overly enjoyable part of Iwakuni, I am beyond words grateful to have experienced such a supportive resource on this base. Lakeyia Brown
