DIRECT DIRECTOR from the

As the first quarter of the year passes, I hope that each of you have had the opportunity to enjoy some of our MCCS programs, events and activities. I was ver y pleased to see that our community really enjoyed the winter activities and snow season. There wasn’t a weekend that went by that our Rec Locker wasn’t used to capacity for ski supplies. We are also working hard with the USO and Armed Forces Entertainment to bring additional acts to the Station for your enjoyment. In April we have a Nav y Entertainment Leatherneck Tour Show featuring T-Pain, a Rap Artist coming to Iwakuni. Our latest Fishing Tournament was a success that brought the JMSDF and our community together to enjoy great fishing, food and music. We hope that the community enjoyed the event and will continue to offer similar events in the near future. In support of fishing we will soon be stocking the MCX with additional supplies for those of you that want your own gear. Speaking of supplies, I want to apologize for the lack of merchandise experienced during the Longshoreman strike. Thankfully the strike is over now and our shelves should be back up to capacity again in short order. For those of you that went to the Spring Bazaar, there were some great buys in Asian art, furniture and supplies. April commemorates many different causes that can relate to the ser vices MCCS offers. This month calls attention to Alcohol Awareness. As we know, the Marine Corps was born in a tavern and alcohol is often present during celebrations of many kinds throughout the militar y. If you feel that you or someone you know is experiencing problems with alcohol abuse, please seek out the help with our confidential Counseling Ser vices. Additionally, April commemorates Sexual Assault Awareness. You can join in expressing support of this cause by participating in Denim Day on April 23. Make a social statement with a fashion statement and become part of the movement to end sexual harassment throughout our militar y and our civilian workforce. Please also know that in the event of sexual harassment, our 24 hour hotline is always an available to you: 080-5865-3566. We have some great events coming your way in the near future. We are excited to open our gates and welcome our host nation onto MCAS Iwakuni for Friendship Day on May 3. 2015. This is the first year that the event will be a joint effort between JMSDF and MCAS Iwakuni. The day will be full of amazing aerial performances, great food, entertainment and fun for ever yone. Our Month of the Militar y Child will be held April 4 and I encourage ever yone on base to come celebrate our Militar y children. For those who have not attended this event in the past our Child Youth and Teen Center sponsors all sorts of great activities for the children including some free food and bouncy houses. Additionally, we have the 48th Annual MCAS Kintai Marathon on the 12th and I hope ever yone has the chance to participate. Have a great month ever yone, and thank you for making Iwakuni a great place to be! “Semper Fi” John Iwaniec Marine Corps Community Ser vices Director

WHO WE ARE THOMAS “LANE” HARRELL POSITION: Assistant Manager Facilities & Maintenance “I truely enjoy “Giving My Best” for this amazing community!”

NOTICE: MCCS Auto Skills will initially give you a cash receipt to validate payment. This is not the receipt you should bring to PMO. The receipt that states “Automobile Tax Stamp” is the receipt that shows you paid the 2015 Road Tax. Please return to the Auto Skills Center after three days to pick up your road tax receipt or proceed from the other off base locations to PMO to finalize the annual registration process.

Pass & Registration 253-3135

There are those of you who are the “do it yourselfers” and that is appreciated as well. If you have a heavy vehicle, please pay at the Sinfonia Building (8:30 AM - 5:15 PM), this is located one block from Mike’s Tex-Mex Restaurant on the left. Payment of light vehicles and all motorcycles road taxes, can be paid on the 2nd floor of City Hall (located across from the Police Station) 8:30 AM - 5:15 PM. Whether you pay at the MCCS Auto Skills, City Hall, or the Sinfonia building you will need to present the following documents to Pass and Registration to

The exception to paying in the month of April are rendered to retirees with Japanese License plates. If you are going TAD, you are still responsible for having your taxes paid. This can be done with or by Power of Attorney. A notice will be sent to the unit commanders reflecting who has not registered by May 8, 2015. The Provost Marshal's Office will suspend the issuance of new licenses and registration of new cars for the SOFA vehicle registration and licensing section from April 15-17. The Japanese Pass and Registration Section will continue normal business hours for the three day period. In addition, the entire Pass and Registration office, will be closed on April 23 for administrative reasons, so please plan accordingly.

If you have any questions please contact Pass and Registration Supervisor at 253-3135. M C C S I WA K U N I . C O M |

The Japanese countryside doesn’t have a ton of room for landfills. So most trash is either recycled or incinerated. Out in town, they get very picky about how you must segregate your trash. There are different days to put out different items, and if the trash isn’t segregated just right, the garbage men won’t take it. Here on base, segregating is a little easier, but no less important C O M B U S T I B L E I T E M S: because most of our household waste ends out in town. Some of our trash can get recycled on base, and we have Japanese contractors Combustible items are any items that can be safely burned in an incinerator. that will sort through the trash and pull out recyclable items. But Just because it’s combustible though, doesn’t mean you should pitch it. Some most trash that can’t be recycled goes off-base to get burned. combustible items can be reused or recycled. And the city won’t accept trash that isn’t segregated properly. Combustible items that can’t be recycled and must get incinerated: So here’s what you can do to help. • Food waste (scraps, shells, bones) The easiest way is to keep different bags for your combustible • Paper containers (milk cartons, paper scraps, soap boxes, cigarette butts, etc.) and noncombustible items. Here’s a good breakdown: that have been contaminated by food or other substances and can’t be recycled • Garden waste (leaves, grass clippings, etc.) • Sanitary items (diapers, etc.)

R E M E M B E R TO R E D U C E , R E U S E , A N D R E C YC L E ! You can help reduce trash by taking usable items, like gently used clothes and toys and other items, to the Thrift Store, instead of throwing them into the trash. The Recycle Center, located at Building 725, also takes some items. Keep a couple of boxes handy to store recyclable items and when they’re full, take them to the Recycle Center: 24-hour drop off area for: Paper products (paper scraps, magazines, food labels, clean food boxes, etc.), Metal items (aluminum cans, metal cans, etc.) Working hours 7:30 AM - 4 PM Large items, such as old furniture

• Other items that can be incinerated and can’t be reused, such as old wooden toys, stuffed animals, etc. • Clothing and other textile items that cannot be reused or recycled.

N O N C O M B U S T I B L E I T E M S: Non-combustibles are items that can’t be burned. Many of these items can be recycled, which is why it’s important to keep them separate. Make sure bottles and cans are empty and have been rinsed before throwing them in the bag; however, if you’re disposing of a hazardous chemical (like paint, bug sprays, etc), keep the liquid in the bottle. Sort these items into different bags: Bag #1: Glass (bottles and jars, ceramics, heat resistant glass, mirrors) Bag #2: Cans (aluminum, steel, pots, kettles, and aluminum foil) Bag #3: Plastics (bottles, plastic or nylon bags, plastic food wrappers, Styrofoam trays)

OT H E R I T E M S: The trash contractors will also take used cooking oil and hazardous chemicals (like cleaners, paint, etc.) If you are getting rid of these items, set these bottles or cans next to the trash collection bins for collection instead of mixing them with your combustible/ noncombustible items.

COMMUNITY ARTICLE

stay clean &

green} by Nikki Bennett, Community Writer

This Earth Day, how about giving up chemicals when you’re cleaning? Use natural products instead! Most chemically-produced cleaners can not only harm your health, but when they’re discarded or thrown in the trash, they can also pollute the environment. Here are three environmentally friendly products you can use to clean just about anything: VINEGAR Vinegar has antibacterial properties and is great for killing mildew and mold.

LEMONS They have antibacterial and antiseptic properties, and give off a nice citrus scent.

BAKING SODA Not just for cooking! Baking soda has an abrasive quality to it, so it works well as a cleaner.

With these ingredients, you can replace tons of manufactured cleaners. Here are some great ideas:

ALL-PURPOSE SCRUB: Use baking soda and a little water to scour pots and pans, countertops, and sinks. You can even use baking soda to wash your dishes instead of soap. COUNTERTOP STAINS: squeeze some lemon juice on the stain, let it sit for a couple of minutes, then scrub the spot with baking soda. REFRIGERATOR FRESHENER: Open a box of baking soda and leave in your fridge to get rid of any smells. You can also use 1 cup apple cider vinegar set in the fridge to get rid of odors. SINK UNCLOGGER: Pour a cup of baking soda in the drain and let sit for at least an hour. Then, boil two cups of vinegar and dump down the drain, followed by hot running water.

LAUNDRY: Add a cup of baking soda to your laundry to help brighten and deodorize clothes. TOILET BOWL CLEANER: Both baking soda and vinegar work great for hard stains and deodorizing the toilet. MOLD: We do suffer from mold here in Iwakuni! Try spraying vinegar on the mold and let sit for a few minutes, then remove the mold with a towel. FURNITURE CLEANER: Mix vinegar with some olive oil to clean furniture (test on a small spot first) BLEACH: Lemon juice acts as a natural bleach. You can use lemon juice on white clothing—just add the juice to the stain, put out in the sun, and watch that stain melt away!

SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER: This may not be for everyone, but I’ve been doing this for almost two years now. You can wash your hair by dissolving a tablespoon of baking soda in ½ glass of water. Run the mixture through your hair, let sit for a few minutes, then wash out. To followup, add ¼ cup vinegar (apple cider or distilled— both work) to ¾ cup water. Let this sit in your hair for a few minutes then wash out. The vinegar’s acidity will counteract the baking soda, which has a higher pH. TOOTHPASTE: It doesn’t contain fluoride, but baking soda works great as toothpaste. I mix mine with a bit of coconut oil to make a paste.

A Day IN THE LIFE of William Guthrie Hello, my name is William Guthrie and I am a junior high student at M.C. Perry High School. I will explain to you a day of my life.

I wake up at 6:15 AM

I make lunches for my brother and me right before we eat breakfast around 6:55 AM. I will usually eat cereal with turkey bacon.

At 7:25 AM I will leave for school and when my dad isn’t driving me I ride my bike.

At 7:50 AM school starts and we get a five-minute passing period to get our books and get to class before it starts.

At school my days are separated into two individual days with four classes each called “A” days & “B” days. My homeroom for A days is Science and for B days it’s Spanish at 7:55 AM.

My next classes are at 9:20 and on A days its Geography and on B days it’s Creative Thinking.

At 10:50 AM I have Math on A days and English/Language Arts on B days.

18

In celebration of Month Of The Military Child, we asked two middle school students, one Japanese and one American, to describe their typical day. William Guthrie and Sayaka Toda. Each wrote a diary describing their school life and the differences are an interesting look at two very different culture

A Day In The Life Of Sayaka Toda

I wake up at 6 AM

Hello, friends! My name is Sayaka Toda. I’m an eighth grade student at Marifu Junior High School. I’ll introduce one day of a Japanese junior high school student’s life to you. I have breakfast at 7 AM. I usually eat rice, miso soup, and pickled vegetables.

At 7:25 AM I leave for school. We are not allowed to ride our bikes because the roads by the school are too narrow, so I walk to school.

School starts at 8:10 AM. At first, we read books for twenty minutes silently, while the teachers have their morning meeting. I have homeroom at 8:30 AM. We check our health and confirm the day's schedule. First period at 8:45 AM is industrial arts class. It’s a little difficult for me, but it’s interesting.

Second period at 9:45 AM is homemaking class. We also Third period at 10:45 AM, is study economy. science class. We are learning about electricity now. To tell the truth, I don’t like science very much. But doing experiments is exciting.

(Pictured: A lunch favorite a the MC Perry Schools, "Breakfast for Lunch".)

We eat lunch at 12:15 PM until 1:05 PM. I usually eat a sandwich, crackers, fruit, something extra (chips, pickles, etc.), and sweets (cookies or candy).

Fourth period at 11:45 AM, is morals study. We study morals once a week. We think about human feelings and our own way of living. Lunch starts at 12:35 PM. We are very busy during lunch time. Students must serve their own class’s school lunch. We have bread menu (American style) on Mondays and Wednesdays, and we have rice menu (Japanese style) on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Anyway, we don’t have enough to eat. Eating time is only about ten minutes! Then we have free time for about twenty minutes.

I finish around 12:40 PM and go to the gym to play. We are supposed to pick up the equipment before we are dismissed to class. Our school is also strict about the rule of no littering and we get detention if we are caught. After lunch depending on the day I have homeroom or creative writing School gets out at 2:30 PM. I wait for my brother and we both bike home together

(Pictured: Spinach salad, pasta, and bread with strawberry jam.)

Fifth period starts at 1:35 PM. It is Japanese class. We learn about grammar, Chinese characters, Japanese literature, and more.

I get home at about 2:55 PM, wash my hands, grab a snack and start my homework shortly after.

At 4:15 PM, I start getting ready for baseball practice or a game. My dad usually coaches my team so he picks me and my brother up at 4:30 PM for practice or a game

Practice usually lasts until 6:55 PM.

At about 7 PM I eat supper, shower and watch TV or play video games.

Sixth period at 2:35 PM is math. Math is my favorite subject! We are learning about diagrams now. At 3:30 PM we have to clean the school. We are split into some groups and I clean the science room for fifteen minutes.

I have homeroom from 3:50 to 4:05 PM. After school I have English/Science club. I get home at about 6 PM.

Then I go to cram school to learn English conversation. I go there on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. I have dinner at about 8 PM. After dinner I enjoy watching TV. To finish the day; my brother and I go to sleep at 8:30 PM

20

I go to bed at 11 PM

I’d like to thank Will and Sayaka for taking the time to write these glimpses into their lives. I hope everyone enjoyed the insight into different cultures. Practice usually lasts until 6:55 PM.

April is month of the

military child!

April is the month of the military child, a chance to honor and celebrate the children of our great Marines, Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen! As a military child we have to deal with a parent(s) being deployed, moving a lot and sometimes to some far places, but this makes us stronger and tougher. That is why you should show appreciation to all the children this month by participating in MCCS events such as, the Month of the Military Child Celebration and the Easter Egg Roll. Both fun events for the whole family! Come join us on April 4 there will be an Easter Egg Roll at the main parade deck from 10:30 AM -1 PM. Then you can head to the Crossroads amphitheater & Bldg. 411 parking lot, to enjoy the Military Child Celebration from 1-4 PM. Even our great Family Readiness Officers are planning events to support the military children! You will definitely want to check out Jr. Recruit's Day later this fall. This event gives kids a chance to spend the afternoon becoming Marines for a day. Kids will have the chance to compete, have fun and even give an obstacle course a try! Also, throughout the month, the CDC and SAC will have events for all of the military children as well. Events like these make being a military child a great experience. It’s one thing to be a military child in the States, but to experience this in Japan is just amazing! There is so much to do and as MCAS Iwakuni is a smaller base it feels like a tight knit community for everyone. Being a military child is an unreal experience and some people may wonder why it is so great when your parent may be gone a lot and you have to move so much. Well I view this chance as a great opportunity; yes, it has its ups and downs, but overall the experience is terrific, we are proud of the hard work our moms and dads do and we wouldn’t trade it for anything. It’s also great being able to talk about similar experiences with your friends and having someone to understand what you’re going through. Just that sense of knowing people are there for you is an amazing feeling. So this month celebrate us military kids and participate in the many events here on MCAS Iwakuni. Take advantage of this amazing experience as a military child and absorb every great moment while we celebrate us kids.

SPRING CLEAN

YOUR DIET

by Tiffany Cunin, CSCS, TSAC-F, PES, Health & Fitness Director

Winter is over and what a better way to jump into warm weather clothes than to do so looking and feeling great! Hopefully most of you have been diligent in your nutrition and have been treating your body right through the cold winter months. Maybe some of you have fallen off the “wagon” this winter and are leaning on the spring sunshine to bring back your motivation. Wherever you fall on the spectrum, it is never too late or early to revisit your nutrition. Let’s face it, it doesn’t matter how hard you work in the gym, how far you run, or how often you play sports if you don’t take care of yourself from the inside out! Here are some great foods which can be found locally and have characteristics which promote healthy, efficient liver and gall bladder functions, key organs in eliminating toxins from the body: ARTICHOKES are great for the liver and the colon because they are rich in the compound cynarin. They are rich in fiber and since they take longer to eat, promote mindful eating and portion control. Artichokes also have antioxidant, antibacterial, and anticancer properties.

DANDELION GREENS are derived exactly from where you think, they are the dandelion plant. These can be found in local Japanese markets in the herb section, usually with the flower still attached which are completely edible as well! Dandelion greens are full of vitamins A and C and aid in the breakdown of fats. Saute them just as you would spinach, kale, or collards.

TURMERIC is great for adding flavor and color to a variety of foods like rice, veggies, chicken and meat dishes. This member of the ginger family has antioxidants which help to eliminate and neutralize toxic chemicals in the liver.

BEETROOT is full of betaine, which supports liver function and promotes cardiovascular health by suppressing the potentially-harmful amino acid, homocysteine.

ONIONS are a vegetable rich in sulfonate compounds which interact with liver to aid in waste removal and help breakdown food in the stomach. It doesn’t matter if you prefer green, white, yellow, or red, all onions have some level of sulfonate compounds to help keep us clean from the inside out. If you are not a fan of onions, leeks, chives, and shallots share the same characteristics.

FENNEL is crunchy and slightly sweet in flavor. It is great roasted with olive oil and parmesan and aids digestion by promoting the secretion of gastric acids in the stomach. Everything from the stalk to the seeds is edible, raw or cooked!

Try some of these foods alone or mix them into recipes. Keep your protein lean, saturated fats low, and eat as many fresh veggies as you can! Hey, if we can make time to spring clean our houses, why not take the time to spring clean the temple that is our body? Here's a great recipe for the spring. Happy cooking!

WOK-SEARED CHICKEN & VEGETABLES

Ingredient List: (Yields 4 servings, 1 ¼ cups each; total time, 35 minutes) ½ tsp ground turmeric 1 tsp coriander seeds 1 tsp fennel seeds 1 tbsp corn starch ¾ tsp sea salt 1-lb boneless, skinless, chicken breast (may substitute other lean proteins of your choice such as WATER WITH CITRUS is a great way to get hydrated and stay hydrated. 50-65% of the body is made up of water and we should be drinking at least half our bodyweight in ounces of water daily; even more if we are physically active. This means that a 150-pound individual needs at least 75 ounces of water a day and closer to 100-150 ounces of water a day if he or she is active. That is a lot of water to drink and can get very boring but there is a simple solution, place pieces of citrus fruit in the water and reap the benefits of vitamin C and antiaging compounds like limonene without getting bored!

mild white fish or tofu) cut into cubes 3 tbsp canola oil, divided 2 carrots, cut into ¼ inch thick slices 1 green bell pepper, cut into 1 inch cubes 1 red onion, cut into ½ inch cubes 4 large cloves of garlic, thinly sliced 3 red chili peppers (optional) 1 tbsp lime juice ½ c fresh mint (finely chopped)

PREPARATION: 1. Grind coriander, cumin, and fennel seeds in a spice grinder such as a coffee mill, or use a mortar and pestle until the mixture resembles coarsely ground pepper. Transfer to a medium bowl and add cornstarch, salt and turmeric; stir to combine. Add protein and stir until coated with the spice mixture. 2. Preheat a wok or well-seasoned cast-iron skillet over high heat. Add 2 tablespoons oil. When the oil is shimmering, add carrots, bell pepper, onion, garlic and chilies. Cook, stirring, until the vegetables begin to brown, 4 to 6 minutes. Transfer to a plate. 3. Reduce heat to medium-high and add the remaining 1 tablespoon oil to the pan. Add the chicken (or other lean protein) and seasonings from the bowl and cook, stirring, until the protein is cooked all the way through, about 5 to 7 minutes. Stir in the vegetables, lime juice and mint and cook until heated through, about 30 seconds.

Wounded

Warrior by

As Marine Corps spouses, we know that knowledge is essential to our understanding and navigating of both our lives and our families’ lives through the Marine Corps culture. Many times, we take classes or attend briefs which add to our situational awareness to help support our family or even the community. One of the classes that we might not have considered attending before is A New Level of Readiness: Caring for your W o u n d e d Warrior provided by Marine Corps Family Team Building. Partially, because it doesn’t pertain to us or because we may be uncomfortable learning about it. The fact is that as a military spouse it is our responsibility to have a basic sense of situational awareness about certain topics no matter how uncomfortable we are in addressing them.

ally occurs, rather than be surprised and not know how to navigate the system. And wouldn’t we all? The purpose of this class is to provide general information about what the Marine Corps considers a Casualty and to really “de-mystify” the casualty notification process so that we spouses have basic information on what is considered to be a casualty and how each casualty may be handled.

er

ship skills in mentoring junior Marines and completing mission critical functions. Ever y year, hundreds of Marines and Sailors become wounded, ill, or injured in service to our country. While the Marine Corps strives to support the loved ones of wounded, ill, and injured servicemembers, many families still do not know what is involved in getting that initial phone call, getting their Marine on the road to recovery, nor what benefits and services are available to them. During times of tragedy and personal need, our emotions may be running high and we might not be able to make much sense of the wave of uncertainty. But if we have some knowledge about this process, the stress and confusion may not be as complex and frightening. Take heed and attend this training to learn more about how the Marine Corps takes care of their own and is committed to doing everything possible to help guide you and your family through the process.

““Marine Corps finds value in retaining wounded warriors”

A New Level of Readiness: Caring for your Wounded Warrior, is a class which was created by HQMC because a number of spouses said that they would much rather know about the process before a casualty actu-

After having attended this class, you will know what the notification process is, the support systems in place to assist, and the recovery steps. An illness or injury can occur at any time and any place, so this means an illness or injury can occur even when your Marine is not deployed or in a combat zone. And remember, when your Marine is considered wounded, ill, or injured, it isn’t synonymous with “medical discharge and end of active career.” The Marine Corps finds value in retaining wounded warriors because of their leader-

The thought of anything happening to your spouse is devastating.

It is hard to think about and hard to talk about. This workshop Offered on a quarterly basis, will help increase your awareness and answer questions about the notification process should your Marine become wounded, ill, or injured while serving in the Corps. the next class will be held MAY 19, 1-2:30PM at yujo Hall
