DIRECT DIRECTOR from the

Along with the month of July comes Independence Day. The first celebration of July 4 th took place a year after the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia on July 4 th 1776. The Continental Congress adjourned for the day and held bonfires, rang bells, and shot off fireworks to commemorate the important day. Within 50 years, parades, picnics, and fireworks were the traditional way to celebrate American independence, the popularity bolstered further after the War of 1812 against Britain. Congress declared Independence Day an official holiday in 1870 and in 1938, it was decided that federal employees would receive full pay while getting the day off work. As many of you may know we usually do not celebrate Independence Day with fireworks on the 4 th of July here in Iwakuni. It is not because we aren’t patriotic but because it has rained 11 of the last 14 years on July fourth. Last year was one of the few exceptions; it rained a week before and a week after the fourth but was beautiful that particular day. Iwakuni will hold our fireworks display during the Summer Music Festival in September. Please don’t be dismayed, MCCS has plenty of other activities to commemorate our Independence on the 4 th . MCCS Kicks off the month of July with a Grand Buffet BBQ at the Club on July 1st so please come out and enjoy all of your American favorites. You can then burn off the calories the next day at the annual Firecracker 5K Fun Run; Semper Fit will be there with giveaways for all participants. On July 4 th we have the band Mustang Sally performing to provide some great Countr y Music. This will be a free event provided by AFE. Additionally we will have free matinees all day and free hotdogs at the theatre on the 4 th . For those of you who enjoy bowling we will provide free bowling throughout the day as well. July is also a great time to make those purchases you’ve been considering at the MCX, for ever y $10 you spend, you’ll receive a Santa Buck to be redeemed in December just in time for the holidays. This is one way that our MCX is here to ser ve you in the best way possible. Make the best of your time this summer, and most importantly please stay safe and have fun! “Semper Fi” John Iwaniec Marine Corps Community Ser vices Director MARKETING WELCOMES JESSICA TO THE TEAM AND WISHES RACHEL ALL THE BEST!

WHO WE ARE MIZUHO SAKAI POSITION: Barking Lot Kennel Manager “I like my job because I meet many different animals and people every work day.”

Kristian Bush of Sugarland, performed for MCAS Iwakuni residents on May 29.

CONQU ERI NG FUJ I -SA N What to Expect When Climbing (With or Without Outdoor Recreation) by Jessica McFarlane, MCCS Public Affairs Marketing Specialist

A climb to the highest peak in Japan and the icon of our host nation is no doubt at the top of your list of things to do while stationed on MCAS Iwakuni. Whether you ascend “Fujisan” with MCCS or with a group, preparation is a must. Before you race to the top, you’ll need to get your body, mind and supplies in check. Climbing Mt. Fuji can be done in a day, and many climbers begin their ascent from one of the fifth stations which feature both rugged or hotel accommodations. For information on getting to the mountain, visit ITT. Head to Outdoor Recreation for information on climbing it. Outdoor Rec features three trips this summer that conveniently include guides, safety briefs, transportation, and lodging. Upcoming Mt. Fuji Trips are: July 16-20, July 30 - August 3, and August 6-10.

So what can you expect when Day 1 / Thursday

The bus trip departs MCCS Iwakuni at 10:30 PM. There are ample stops along the way to stretch your legs, grab refreshments or use the facilities.

Day 2 / Friday

Spend a few hours at Yokosuka Navy Base dining or shopping before continuing to the New Sanno Hotel in Tokyo where the group check-in is at 3 PM. Rest up, because …

10

Day 3 / Saturday

… the bus departs at 2 AM. This is a great time to catch some shut-eye. The climb is on after a one-hour acclimation period at the fifth station, or approximately 6 AM. If you climb without an MCCS guide, it is strongly encouraged that you break at the fifth station for an hour. As your body has just hit 7,550 ft in a short period, a rest will help prevent elevation sickness, (side effects include headaches, fatigue, dizziness and vomiting.) This location is a great spot to grab some souvenirs, purchase your climbing stick with a fifth station stamp and use the last free restroom on the trail. (See Fuji Fun Facts.) There are four trails that originate at the fifth station. Although they feature similar terrain, they have varying lengths and difficulty levels. The ODR trip will follow the Fujinomiyaguchi Trail, which is a single track out and back. Yoshida is an excellent route for the cautious climber as its switchbacks allow for a slower change in elevation and less steep climbing. No matter which trail you climb, you’ll most likely encounter all four seasons in a matter of an hour.

FUN FUJI FACTS

#1 You can’t enjoy a Cup O’ Noodle® at its proper temperature. Due to less oxygen and atmospheric pressure at Fuji-San’s higher stations, water boils at a lower temperature and rapidly cools. Better slurp quickly!

#2 You will pay to potty. With the use of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park’s trail system and access to the highest peak in Japan being totally free, this World Heritage Site's maintenance is largely funded by the ¥200 yen bathroom fee.

#3 Strangers will talk to you. As you ascend, don’t be surprised when you’re continually cheered on by descending climbers with spirited expressions of “ganbatte!” This friendly Japanese expression loosely translates to “give it your best,” and you should practice now so that you may return the favor on the way back.

ITT §253-4377 Outdoor Rec §253-3822

n climbing Mt. Fuji with MCCS? You should reach the top in roughly five to seven hours. Along the way, you will find multiple stations that double as your milestones. Take a minute to rehydrate and purchase a stamp for your climbing stick before buying a bathroom break. (See Fuji Fun Facts.) Prepare to be initially shocked by the high cost of a bottle of water or instant noodles but keep in mind that these private businesses hauled those items up the mountain so that you didn’t have to. At the summit, the average climber has about an hour to walk around the cone. There’s quite a bit to do up there! Impress your friends by sending them a postcard from the summit’s post office. There are eight peaks at the summit and several shrines. Because “Fujisan” straddles two prefectures, there’s a friendly rivalry as to which side boasts the best view--Yamanashi or Shizuoka. Take a look and see which prefecture you prefer. If climbing without a guide, allow yourself another three to four hours to descend. The ODR bus departs from the same location at 6 PM and will return to the New Sanno Hotel at 9 PM.

Day 4 / Sunday

How you spend day four is entirely up to you. It is either your climb make-up date or a free day in Tokyo.

Day 5 / Monday

Departure from Tokyo is at 9 AM, and the bus will arrive back in Iwakuni at approximately 10 PM. Not only will you have some sore muscles, but you’ll also return with a giant sense of accomplishment and a killer story for your friends and family back in the states! M C C S I WA K U N I . C O M |

COMMUNITY ARTICLE

Tanabata

Altair (K engyuu )

by Jenna West, Community Writer

All the world loves a romantic tale, and the Japanese are no exception. I’ve lived here for 18 years, and have learned much about love – and love stories – Japanese style. To be sure, many of the stories involve dire consequences of swift and violent revenge … or slow and violent retribution, usually by the ghost of the wronged (and deceased) lover. But the legend of Orihime and Kengyuu has what can be called a happy ending, albeit a bittersweet one. The Tanabata legend, like many others, was originally imported from China, but given a unique Japanese twist. As in all such tales, there are probably as many versions as there are those who tell it. And a love story is a love story, right? So get yourself into your best fairy tale mind-set and read on.

So on to t he le g e nd. O rihim e was t h e daughter of the heavenly Emperor. An accomplished weaver, she wove the most beautiful garments for her celestial family, and was much admired by all. Still, Orihime spent all of her days doing so – a lonely fate for a lovely celestial princess. So she sat sadly by the river of the Milky Way. Her father pitied her, and so arranged a marriage with Kengyuu, a cowherd who lived across the river. The marriage turned out to be a happy one, although paradoxically a bit too much so.

sparrows will fly together in “formation” and make a bridge above the high waters for the lovers to cross over. Another legend involves the Boatman-of-the-Moon, who ferries Orihime to her beloved Kengyuu each year but if the river is flooded he cannot make the journey. Tanabata celebrations are wonderfully symbolic, easy to do, and very familyfriendly – never mind that kid who has no interest in romance. You will see very elaborate displays in m a ny schools and retail establishments, and here’s why. The last bit of the legend holds that if you make a wish on Tanabata and the weather is clear, your wish will come true. If it rains, well, not so much. So declare your faith for good weather to happen by finding a bamboo branch, and hang pieces of paper with your wishes written on them. You can also make paper decorations of woven strips of paper, little washi paper kimono, and fishing nets (for prosperity overall) to make your bamboo branch a kind of Christmas tree in July.

th e legen d o f O rihime an d K engyuu has what can be called a happy en ding, albeit a bit terswee t on e.

To give the story a celestial enhancement (and how could that hurt?), look up the stars Vega and Altair. These two are, literally, our star-crossed lovers. In fact, that may be where the very phrase originated, so let’s start there. Warning: you’re about to get a quick education in astronomy. In summer in the Northern Hemisphere, Altair (Kengyuu) is the second-brightest star visible to the naked eye. It is in the Constellation Aquila (the Eagle). Vega (Orihime) is the fifth brightest star in the Constellation Lyra (the Harp). From our perspective here on Earth, they are on opposite sides of the Milky Way. Keep that in mind.

The newlyweds spent so much time reveling in one another’s company that Orihime neglected her weaving duties more and more, as did Kengyuu his cattle. Orihime’s father, thus angered, ordered them to be separated and sent them back to their original places on opposite sides of the river (Milky Way, remember?). They were allowed to see one another only on the 7th day of the 7th month, July in the Lunar Calendar. On that date, Orihime’s father allowed them to cross the river and meet again. But, there was a hitch (well, true lovers must have some obstacles to prove their devotion, so?) If it rains on July 7, the river will flood and our lovers will not be able to meet. Now different imaginative solutions come into play. One legend has it that if, on July 7, it rains and the river is flooded, birds – in some versions blackbirds, in others,

This is the tricky part, however. When your Tanabata decoration has served its purpose (2-3 days), you must either burn it or throw it into the nearest river. Simply dumping it in the trash will ensure that your wishes will suffer the same fate.

Japanese Pot tery by Nikki Bennett , Community Writer

There’s something about the earthiness of pottery that calls to us. Maybe it’s because pottery comes from the Earth itself— a soft clump of clay patiently molded, lovingly crafted, and then fired until it transforms into a solid, usable object that still retains a sense of the soil from which it came. Or maybe it is because pottery reflects not only the art of the person that made it, but also the heart of the culture that surrounds it. Pottery is almost as old as human civilization. It began simply, as a means to make practical items like bowls and storage containers, but quickly evolved into an art unto itself. The ancient Greeks prided themselves on the intricate designs on their vases; the Ming dynasty developed a breathtaking style that is sought and treasured even today; and the Native Americans crafted beautiful earthenware that chronicled the history of their people. Every civilization, every culture has used pottery to display its uniqueness and importance. In Japan, there are two main types of ceramics, but the styles are as varied as the towns that make them. Touki pottery is a softer ceramic— Hagi pottery (or Hagi yaki) is a good example of this. Hagi yaki is a fragile ceramic kilned at low temperatures. It is usually very simple and rustic. Jiki porcelain (or china) is a much harder ceramic. Arita yaki, crafted mainly in the town of Arita on the island of Kyushu, is a good example of Jiki porcelain. It is finer and more translucent than Hagi yaki, and is vividly painted.

Styles

Pottery styles and themes are as diverse as the places they come from. Many potters try to capture a significant event or important cultural element and display it in their pottery. For example, Kikkogawa is known for its depictions of the Kintai Bridge on some of its pottery pieces. The Iwakuni potters also utilize distinct glazes to celebrate different seasons—a white, crackly glaze represents both winter snow and the revered white snake; soft pinks greet the spring; vivid blues symbolize the Nishiki River in the summer time; earthy browns and soft peach colors remind us of fall; and a light tan infused with swirls of white celebrates the rice harvesting season.

Clays

You can’t just dig a hole in your backyard, take the dirt, and make a piece of pottery. Clay is needed—and clay isn’t just ordinary dirt. While dirt is made of decayed organic matter, clay consists mostly of minerals weathered gradually out of rocks and accumulated into large deposits in the ground. These minerals give clay plasticity not found in regular soil, and it is this plasticity that makes clay conducive to the mixing, shaping, crafting and firing that is required to make a usable piece of pottery.

Crafting

There are two main ways to shape clay into beautiful ceramics—hand building and wheel throwing. Hand building includes the technique of “coiling,” where long coils of clay are stacked and joined to form the desired shape. The coils are then molded seamlessly together, to produce the final effect. In wheel throwing, the potter starts with a lump of clay, gets the wheel spinning, and deftly pushes the clay out and up into shapes that seem to defy gravity.

Glazes

After shaping, the pottery is normally glazed. Glazing not only adds color and texture to a piece, it strengthens and waterproofs the clay. Glazes can be dry or wet, and can be made from a variety of materials. At Kikkogawa, a pottery kiln in Iwakuni, one popular glaze comes from bamboo ashes. These ashes, when fired with the pottery, produce a delicate pink glaze. It is said that only special bamboo grown in the Iwakuni area produces this beautiful pink color. Another glazing technique used by the assistant potter master at Kikkogawa is accomplished with rice chaff. Chaff is packed tightly against the piece of pottery before firing. During firing, the smoldering chaff interacts with the clay to produce an earthy glaze that compliments the assistant potter’s unique mountain sculptures. If a potter wishes to decorate his piece with specific artwork, he uses an under glaze. An example of this is the blue and white porcelain famous throughout Japan and China. The blue color comes from cobalt, which is painted onto the piece. This is followed by an over glaze, which not only protects the artwork but adds a shiny, glassy look to the ceramic.

Firing

The last important (and tricky) step in the process is firing. Firing is difficult because the outcome depends not only on how the piece of pottery will react with the temperature in the kiln, but also on the amount of air circulation, the time involved, and other factors. It’s almost impossible to determine precisely how a glaze will look until after the firing, because glazes respond differently with different clays. Therefore, every piece that comes out of the kiln can be considered unique, even if the differences are only slight. Nowadays, most mass-produced pottery is fired in gas-driven kilns. These kilns regulate temperature faster than the old wood-fired types. However, at Kikkogawa, certain pieces are still fired the old fashioned way—using a large, outdoor brick kiln with three compartments. Pine wood is added in the first compartment to get the fire going. It takes about eighteen hours for the next two compartments (the ones containing the pottery) to reach 800 and 500 degrees centigrade, respectively. After 24 hours of continuous firing, the temperatures can get up to 1,200 and 800-900 degrees centigrade, respectively. To keep the kiln heated, between 800 to 1,000 bundles of firewood must be used. It takes 24 hours to finish firing the pottery, and another week for the kiln to cool back down. Needless to say, only very special, important pieces are still fired this way.

COMMUNITY ARTICLE

Returning to my

HIROSHIMA

ROOTS

by Vernon Sato, Community Writer

I was born and raised in Hawaii, but my maternal grandparents, Kango and Yoshi Hamada, were from Japan. My grandparents taught me Japanese customs, man nerisms, and work ethics, as well as a profound respect for my ancestral homeland. I always wondered about the long-lost relatives I had in Japan and my family history there. I was born and raised in Hawaii, but my maternal grandparents, Kango and Yoshi Hamada, were from Japan. My grandparents taught me Japanese customs, mannerisms, and work ethics, as well as a profound respect for my ancestral homeland. I always wondered about the long-lost relatives I had in Japan and my family history there. In 1961, my only Far East family vacation took me to Hiroshima. I was eleven years old and loved the #1 American contact sport—football—but was pretty aggressive when I played. I met my Hiroshima cousin, who taught me in our short visit that I could love sports, but my emotions needed to be controlled. Yes, I had a lot to learn from my Japanese relatives. My short visit to my “ancestral home” helped me to realize that Japan possessed a different, wise, and time-honored culture that I could be proud of. I returned to Hawaii and lost contact with my Japanese relatives. Years later, I resolved to reconnect with them but wasn’t sure how. Then, in 2013, I landed a job at MCAS Iwakuni and decided to find my long-lost Hamada family.

the Itsukaichi Shinto Shrine, and the Itsukaichi City Hall, who held my Hamada Family’s “koseki” (official family registry). My grandfather, Kango Hamada, was the fourth and youngest son of Magohichi and Mime Hamada. The first son (my grandfather’s oldest brother) was named Tomio. He and his wife had four daughters. The second son is a mystery because he was not documented in our 1925 koseki. The third son was Kengo Hamada, my cousin Masatoshi’s grandfather. Back in the 1800’s, the Hamada Family members were thriving seafood merchants. My great-grandfather lost most of his wealth by co-signing for a friend who went bankrupt. My grandparents moved to Hawaii, and after they had prospered in Honolulu, they purchased real estate along Itsukaichi Beach. They also bought a medical clinic for my uncle who was studying in Japan before WWII to become a doctor, and sent $90k to a bank in Japan with excellent interest rates.

Breathe in the air of my forbearers Walk beneath the earth of my ancestors Discover names on my family tree 65 years in the making …Home at last!

My parents, uncles, aunts, and grandparents had all passed away, so I could not ask them for information. Family records provided my quest with only two clues; My cousin was named Masatoshi Hamada and he once lived in the Hiroshima area. For two long years, I could not persuade the local Hiroshima church and city officials to open their Hamada information vaults because I had no formal proof of my Hamada birth connection. It also didn’t help that I could not speak Japanese well.

Then, suddenly and surprisingly, the official doors opened after my October 2014 visit to the Japan Consulate in Honolulu, Hawaii. Helpful consulate officials took my passport and unique Hamada family information and connected me with my grandparents’ records. It probably didn’t hurt that my grandparents’ hotel in Honolulu was once just a block away from the Consulate and often housed Japanese distinguished visitors from 1923 to 1941. Two weeks later, I received a half-page official Japan Consulate family chart with key pieces of information. Since ‘Hamada’ can be written at least four different ways in kanji, this document firmly identified my family name. Our Hamada Family came from the Itsukaichi area, Saeki-ku ward of Hiroshima prefecture.

At the start of WWII, my grandparents and Aunty Helen were in Honolulu. My mother and Uncle Masao were studying in Japan. Immediately after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, my mom, with much difficulty, boarded the last boat from Tokyo Harbor to Honolulu Harbor with other US citizens. My Uncle Masao stayed in Japan to complete his medical studies, but was drafted into the Japanese army (most likely as a medic) in 1943, and contracted three tropical diseases in Taiwan. He was eventually sent to the Hiroshima Army Hospital where he died at the age of 21 from the effects of the atomic bomb. My grandparents’ (Kango & Yoshi Hamada) cremated ashes are divided (standard Japanese practice) between the Nuuanu Memorial Cemetery in Honolulu and my newly discovered Hongwanji Korenji Temple/Cemetery in Itsukaichi. Each cemetery location has a separate and impressive Hamada ‘haka’ (墓,) which is a Japanese family grave consisting of a stone monument with a hidden chamber or crypt underneath to store the ashes in urns. Uncle Masao has his ashes in a third unique Atomic Bomb Memorial haka located on the Itsukaichi Temple grounds. It is amazing to connect finally with my Hamada roots. All of the information I gathered in the last three months has been shared with my family--especially my siblings, children, and grandchildren. Hamada roots run deep in Itsukaichi, Japan. I pray that these connected roots take hold, grow, and span oceans into our family’s future.

On Christmas Day 2014, through a translator friend, I found my cousin Masatoshi Hamada and his wife. I discovered that they lived only 18 miles from Iwakuni and less than a mile from the Hatsukaichi Orphanage where I’ve been volunteering once a month for the last two years! With the help of my cousin and translator friend, I received a flood of information from the Honpa Hongwanji Korenji Buddhist temple/cemetery in Itsukaichi, M C C S I WA K U N I . C O M |

What is BEMA? by Bunny Clark, Admin Support Assistant

BEMA is The Business Division’s “Business Employee of the Month Award” Program. The BEMA Program was established in 2012, to empower employees and workers to personally select co-workers to be spotlighted and rewarded for their exceptional achievements and dedicated service. This Award Program was conceived by Mr. Larry Mask, Chief of Business, and turned over to a governing BEMA Board comprised of employee representatives from each Business Branch. The BEMA Board worked closely together to write the Mission Statement, Vision Statement and By-Laws. They also designed the logo and trophy, had a coin minted, and launched the program. The board members meet monthly, when they collect and evaluate nomination ballots, screen and deliberate to unanimously select one BEMA Winner every 3 rd month. (Note: Supervisors and Managers are ineligible to vote, but can win the award.) The BEMA Ceremony is usually held at 2 PM on the last Wednesday of every 3 rd month in Talbot’s Dining Room. Employees from all branches of the Business Division attend to honor and celebrate with the winner. We open the ceremony before inviting all attendees to stand and introduce themselves. We then encourage attendee participation with the crowd favorite--drawings for free meal coupons! The highlight of the ceremony is announcing the BEMA winner. The winner receives a framed Certificate of Excellence, a BEMA coin, $65 in gift certificates, two Business Division $12 Meal Coupons, a WOW Card, their photo displayed on the Award Boards in three Business facilities, (Club Iwakuni, Food Court and Strike Zone) and their nameplate on the huge travelling trophy that will be kept at their respective branch until the next ceremony. We also acknowledge and reward all new employees, promotions, weddings, births, birthdays for the month, and bid farewell to departing employees with presentations of framed Sayonara certificates.

BEMA

The final events of the ceremony are a delicious, free luncheon buffet, as well as occasional entertainment provided by employees. The Business Division feels very fortunate to have such quality staff, and the award, gifts and luncheon are a mere symbol of thanks and appreciation for the employees’ and workers’ outstanding performances.
