COMMUNITY ARTICLE
How we plan our road trips in by Iwakuni Explorer, Community Writer
During our three years in Iwakuni, we try to take advantage of living overseas by traveling as much as possible on weekends and holidays. The stretch between April and November is our favorite time to travel due to a number of long weekends, holidays, and school breaks. These are the months we plan our longer road-trips. Some of our most memorable trips included a Spring Break road trip across Honshu, a Memorial Day weekend trip where we camped across Shikoku and saw hundreds of dolphins, a Labor Day weekend drive to the southern part of Kyushu to watch a volcanic eruption, and a Veteran’s Day weekend trip to see the beautiful Kunamo Nachi Taisha shrine in Wakayama Prefecture.
W H E R E W E S TAY Because we spend most of our trip sightseeing, we generally don’t spend a lot of time at hotels beyond sleeping and getting ready. Mid-range business hotels such as APA, Comfort Hotel, and Toyoko Inn are affordable, reliable, and easy to book online. Having problems finding a hotel? Consider getting two smaller rooms instead of one big one or look for rooms in a nearby cit y. We’ve had to do both, but in most cases it saved us quite a bit of money. Another option is to check out nearby campgrounds. Unless we’re specifically planning a camping trip though, we have found that staying in cabins is much more convenient on a longer road trip: less to pack and less time to set-up and break-down.

H OW W E PL A N O U R T R I PS Our trips usually begin with an idea: a location, an activity, or a festival. From there, we research other points of interests along t h e w a y, t r y in g t o b a l a n c e b et we en hands-on activities, nature, cultural, and historical points of interest. The trip to see firefly squid, for example, ended up being a 10 day roadtrip of a lifetime where we stopped at popular destinations such as cherr y blossoms in Kyoto, Disney Sea in Tokyo, Mt. Fuji, and Nikko as well as lesser known places such as a food sample factory where most of the restaurant food displays are made, a Kokeshi factory, and a Daruma doll factory where we painted our own Daruma dolls. Google and Trip Advisor are t wo of our favorite resources, and whenever we come to a dead-end in our research, the staff at ITT(253-4377) and Cultural Adaptation(253-6165) have been tremendously helpful.

T R AV E L I N G W I T H K I DS We started traveling with kids when our son was 8 weeks old and we just kept going. We now have a 10 year old and a 9 year old who travel with us on most of our trips. The best advice I can give other parents is that children are capable of understanding and appreciating more than what we sometimes give them credit for and that boredom isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Do visit the aquariums, zoos, and amusement parks but go ahead and visit the temples, castles, shrines, museums, or festivals that you want to see too! Trust me, the kids will find something interesting to engage themselves in. If not, they’ll learn patience which will make it easier for future family trips. Stop to smell the flowers, gather rocks (at the strangest places), pet stray animals, and remember that some of the best adventures are not planned. Another important piece of advice? Never travel hungry, because hungry people tend to be irritable and do not make good travel companions and this applies to the adults in the group as well!

T R AV E L I N G W I T H PE T S When the weather is not too hot or too cold, we usually bring our two dogs with us on our trips. While Japan is very pet friendly in that many destinations allow dogs (parks, hiking trails, even the grounds of many shrines and castles), finding lodging is a challenge. Dog-friendly hotels are not common, in fact, we have never stayed in one during our travels here. Cabins and campgrounds are usually our best bets, although our dogs do fine sleeping in the van as well. With that said, traveling with our dogs usually means that we’re covered in fur. A lint roller (or several lint rollers) is a necessity!
W H AT W E PAC K • Clothes appropriate for the weather • Camera and camera accessories • Toiletries including sunscreen, insect repellent, bug bite medicine, toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Many public restrooms in the countryside do not have soap or toilet paper! • Car and outlet chargers, as well as a portable charger. Since we use our phones for just about everything including navigation, music, translation, camera, and Google searches keeping our phones charged is a high priority.

CAR TIP Bef ore e mb arking on your ad ve nt ure, make sure that your car is ready: check your tires, wipers, oils, and liquids. Gas is expensive off-base, so always begin your journey with a full tank even if it's a short trip. If you have an ETC card, make sure your card is actually in the reader before leaving home!
• Medicine. Personal medications, thermometer, Imodium, Benadryl, and Tylenol or Motrin (adult’s & children’s). Ok, I’m a little bit of a pack rat when it comes to bringing my medicine cabinet with me but the last thing I want to do on a trip in a foreign country is having to visit a pharmacy or a clinic for something easily treatable. • Entertainment for children, which always included several e-books and sometimes a new game on their tablets. • A Goshuin-Chou, or a stamp book for temple and shrines. • Two lightweight blankets and two travel pillows, one for each child. This eliminates most of the “I’m cold” and “It’s uncomfortable” complaints. • Emergency kit: first-aid, jumper cables, flashlights, snow chains (if needed), etc. • If camping, cabining, diving, or skiing then necessary gear. • If bringing the dogs, then food, bowls, and clean up bags.

BUSE S
There are many buses in Japan, both local and cross-country highway buses. There are also overnight buses running, and these slower forms of transportation are quite cheap. If you’re able to sleep on moving vehicles, these can be a very inexpensive alternative to the faster Shinkansen. Like the trains, many bus companies offer one- or multi-day passes that give discounts. Again, ITT is a great resource for looking into
TR A INS
Japan has one of the most expensive train systems in the world, but it's also one of the most efficient. From the fast Shinkans en (Bullet Train) to local lines, trains are one of the most popular and easiest ways to get around the country and the cities. ITT can help travelers get to Shin-Iwa kuni (which is where the local bullet train departs from) as well as buying tickets. The bullet train comes in three basic styles: Nozomi (which is the fastest), Hikari (slightly slower but still speedy), and the slowest moving Kodama. All bullet trains have firstcome, first served seating but reservations can also be made in advance to make sure you have a seat. This is highly recomme nded if you plan on traveling during the peak seasons mentione d above.
bus information and ticket rates.
PL A N E S There are many airports in Japan, scattered all through the main islands. The most common ones for international travel are located in Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, and Okinawa. All-Nippon Airlines (ANA) and Japan Airlines (JAL) are the two major carriers. ANA handles flights right from Iwakuni Kintai Airport, with regularly scheduled flights to Haneda Airport in Tokyo. There are many more domestic airports that can get you to other parts of Japan if you are traveling outside of Iwakuni or other major cities. Like airlines in America, Japanese airlines have their own discounts, clubs, and perks to help make traveling easier and cheaper.
CA RS MCAS Iwakuni provides a vehicle rental company. It can be a nice way to explore the more rural areas of Japan, where public transportation is more inconvenient. It is not recommended for cities, however, as the traffic is heavier, directions and orientation are more difficult, and parking is expensive. Most places have limited assigned parking, and it’s frowned upon to park in front of one shop and walk to another. There are many parking lots and garages, although almost all charge and the prices can be steep. A SOFA license is required for driving. If you’ve just arrived and don’t have one yet, consider riding with a friend who does.

PREPARING FOR MT. FUJI IN IWAKUNI by Todd Montgomery, Outdoor Recreation
As the air is thin, you should take care not to overexert yourself for there is the risk of suffering from symptoms of acute mountain sickness (AMS). Drinking water well in advance will help lower the risk of AMS. Cardiovascular training will help condition your body for the long hike. Walking, running, treadmill, and local hikes are some great ways to prepare for Mt. Fuji. It’s good to hit a few local mountains first, just to get your feet wet. Outdoor Recreation has some recommendations for a few amazing local area hikes. THREE PEAKS I _ _ _ _ This hike is rated difficult and focuses on the quick ascent to the peak.
SEVEN FALLS I _ _ _ With various trails, Seven Falls can be a short trip but the long loop route to the top of the mountain. Distance: approximately 7 miles Estimated time: 5 hours (long trail to summit) Elevation Gain: 2,843 ft. Max Elevation: 4,354 ft.
MIYAJIMA I _ _ Rated an easy/moderate hike, great hike to build up endurance by picking up a faster than normal pace to the summit. Distance: approximately 2 miles Estimated time: 2.5-3 hours Elevation Gain: 1,411 ft. Max elevation: 1,411 ft.
SANDANKYO I _ _ Rated an easy/moderate hike. This hike is a walk through Sandankyo Gorge. While the entire trail is very long there is not a lot of elevation gain.
KINTAI CASTLE I _ Even hiking the path up to Kintai castle a few times would be beneficial for Mt. Fuji preparation. The steep ascent mirrors the Mt. Fuji trail.
Check out next month's Preview for more about the Outdoor Recreation Fuji trips!

TRANSITIONING RESOURCES FOR SPOUSES
SOURCES FOR SPOUSES TO GET ASSISTANCE WITH TRANSITIONING FROM THE MILITARY:
by Tony Goodsell, Personal and Professional Development Advisor
SPOUSE TRANSITION AND READINESS SEMINAR (STARS). STARS is a 3 ½ hour workshop specifically for military spouses that has information about what to expect, sources of assistance, and an opportunity to communicate directly with subject matter experts on moving and entitlements. TRANSITION READINESS SEMINAR (TRS). TRS is the five-day workshop for military members who are required to attend to prepare for the transition to civilian life. In-depth briefs on VA and other benefits and extensive job search preparation information is provided. Spouses are strongly encouraged to attend.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF WHEN YOU HEAR THE WORD “TRANSITION”? Ask a military spouse and words like change, moving, schools, jobs, and stress may come to mind. Militar y spouses have had to make many transitions in their relationship with an active dut y member. Learning about militar y culture, making an international move, and having to change jobs because of relocations are just some of the transitions that spouses make. But if you ask military members about transition, they will probably think of getting out of the militar y. Moving, going back to school or changing jobs, and the stress associated with them are just part of the package. Many military members have never had a significant job outside of the military, so their transition back to civilian life is often filled with more uncertainty and stre ss t han ot he r m ove s or changes that they have experienced. Because of the importance of helping service members be successful in their return to civilian life, the military has classes and workshops to help in the transition. It has long been recognized that milit a r y s p o us e s a r e im p o r t a n t
partners in the transition process, and have always been encouraged to attend the transition workshops. But few spouses have the time or are even aware of their invitation to attend the Transition Readiness Seminar. Many want the benefits information, but don’t feel they have the time for a full five-day workshop. To help improve communication, and give information that is aimed specifically for the needs of military spouses, a new program has been created. The Spouse Transition and Readiness Seminar (STARS) is a 3 ½ hour seminar that provides information on the transition process and benefits. You will meet with subject matter experts to get the most up-to-date information available. An open forum discussion will allow you to pick the brains of the experts and talk with spouses who have successfully transitioned to hear about issues that you may never have considered and get all of your questions answered. Stop by Personal and Professional Development in Building 411 to get more information or to register for upcoming classes.
ACCESSING HIGHER EDUCATION (AHE). AHE provides information on choosing a degree program, selecting the best school for your educational goals, financing the degree program, and applying to college. Although it is focused on transitioning service members, it is a good course for anyone considering college. CAREER / TECHNICAL TRAINING (CTT). CTT is similar in purpose and design to AHE, but is focused on shorterterm education such as vocational and technical training schools, Associate degree programs, and apprenticeships. BOOTS TO BUSINESS ENTREPRENEURSHIP WORKSHOP (B2B). The Small Business Administration sends a team to teach basic entrepreneurship skills and introduce important concepts for people thinking about starting their own business. After you have finished the class, you will gain access to an eight-week online course that will help you develop a business plan. Several spouses in on Iwakuni have used this program to help improve and grow their home-based businesses. MILITARYONESOURCE.COM. Military One Source is an online resource that has extensive information and resources for active duty and their family members. For transitioning families, the Plan My Move tool can help you organize your move. There are also resources for finding out about potential places to move, and employment assistance services and job opportunities for family members. M C C S I WA K U N I . C O M |

SPONSOR! PCSing to Iwakuni Japan can be an overwhelming and awesome experience. Families deal with many uncertainties when preparing for moves. For everyone, including youth, the fear of the unknown can be scary and very real. Some questions might be: • Will I find any friends? • What will my new school be like? • Are there any fun activities/sports available for my age? • Will I fit in? • What do other kids wear to school? Are you a little anxious? How about joining together with a youth sponsor to help make the transition a little smoother? Youth sponsorship plays a very important role in the transitioning process for children. A youth sponsor will assist in providing the answers to these questions and many more. Their job is to help eliminate the unknowns. The most important part of being a youth sponsor is to be a friend and make the new student feel welcome to the MCAS Iwakuni Community. A youth sponsor will introduce the newcomer to other students at school and help them transition to the Youth Center.
