DIRECT DIRECTOR from the
As August slips away I want to take a moment to thank a few members of our MCCS team for their superior performance during one of our special events last month. The Mount Fuji trip was awesome and it would not have been near as successful without the tremendous support from some of our Semper Fit staff and our bus drivers. Of special note I would like to thank Masahiko Hiromoto, Nobuharu Murakami and Kenji Takata for ever ything they did to advise the climbers on how to prepare for the trip, climbing with the tour and attending to injuries; you guys rock! Your team went above and beyond by taking care of our militar y members and their families. I also want to thank the bus drivers Toru Fujimoto and Norio Furuhara for their excellent driving and a worr y free trip. Also special congratulations to David and Jessica Smith for making the “round trip” from mountain top and back down the quickest. September items of interest for the community include: The Librar y will be undergoing a renovation project this month. Librar y staff will have to be creative in shifting around programming and resources, and we appreciate the community’s understanding while we make these improvements. Also I wanted ever yone to know we had to cancel the upcoming Fall Bizarre this year in October due to all the new construction going on behind the Gym, we have no way to get the big furniture items into the gym and there was no suitable alternate location to accommodate the venders. We of course still plan for the Spring Bazaar next April. For those of you who don’t know it yet, we have a new Chef on board, Mr Etsuji. Our new chef was formally the top chef at the Camp Foster Breezeway Club and a great addition to our team. Chef Etsuji will be hosting a food tasting experience at the club in the near future. MCCS will be asking for a cross section of individuals from each Command to tr y out his culinar y delights. The JD’s menu will also be changing in the near future to accommodate some of the chef’s flagship specialty items. For all you Sports minded fans out there the Commanding Officer, Colonel Boucher has authorized a “Jeans and Jersey Day” on the 4th of September. You are authorized and encouraged to show us who your favorite team is, so be cool and join the fun; Go Miami Dolphins!!!! This month marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month. Celebrated September 15 through October 15, our countr y recognizes the achievements of Hispanic Americans - many who have ser ved our countr y. Club Iwakuni will host the Hispanic Heritage Buffet on October 7 to celebrate their contributions as part of America’s rich diversity. New residents looking for personal and professional development while stationed at MCAS Iwakuni can turn to MCCS for assistance. MCCS HR has a variety of job opportunities in various fields and can assist spouses with the application process. Marine Corps Family Team Building can connect ser vice members and family members to volunteer opportunities. There are also several notable awareness days and campaigns this month. Please do not forget September 11 and all those who lost their lives during the Terrorist attack on the Twin Towers. MCAS Iwakuni will be having a special ceremony in recognition of this event and we encourage ever yone to attend and remember this sad time for our countr y. September 19 is POW/MIA Recognition Day; this annual event honors prisoners of war, those missing in action and their families. We also highlight our government’s commitment to account for them. The community is invited to recognize World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10 by wearing the campaign’s designated color, yellow. Participate in related programs around the base to show your support.
WHO WE ARE
MCCS Iwakuni is an active member of the Boys and Girls Club of America (BGCA), and both our Youth and Teen Centers are certified BGCA affiliates. On September 20, families are invited to our annual Boys and Girls Clubs Day for Kids for an afternoon of games, demonstrations and giveaways. The fun will be held at the Crossroads Amphitheater.
ETSUJI UMEZU

COMMUNITY ARTICLE
Old School is the New by Charles Dine & Eric Drummond, Community Writers
From a Marine Who Has "Been
There"
CWO2 Charles Dine
(Airfield Operations Department, Aircraft Recovery) I’d like to share my educational journey with current and prospective degree seekers. Deciding to take up my educational endeavor while serving in the military has been a tremendous advantage. One benefit of pursuing education after pursuing a career is that I am a great deal more mature. My military training has developed my sense of responsibility, and I am much more focused on setting goals and planning for success. I’ve also become culturally versed through my global travels, a benefit of my service. I recently completed my Fire Science Technologies degree with Pikes Peak Community College through traditional classroom and online course study. I have been accepted to complete my Bachelors in Emergency Management at Arizona State University next Spring while utilizing my Post 9/11 G. I. Bill benefits. However, my degree hasn’t come without challenges. First and foremost, I have always been committed to being the best technically and tactically proficient Marine for my Corps. I had a significant amount of formal military schooling. A service member probably wonders where formal academic degree study can fit in between our training schedule, operational and combat deployments, or family obligations. Admittedly, I have had to drop one class due to an unforeseen deployment. At the time, I felt like my goal had been pushed back a semester, and I was very frustrated. But these days, technology has bridged the deployment gap and today I would have been able to deploy and complete that class. Another challenge is attending school online. I felt as if I was just another number. The physical separation of forward basing and deployments further exacerbate feelings of helplessness and just plain being lost in the process. It isn’t easy, but we Marines are tenacious! Set educational goals, remain committed to your plan and humble yourself enough to ask for help when needed. Here are three practices that have been key to my educational success.
1) Utilize the education office: There are no dumb questions!
There is a plethora of assistance and committed people who will research where to get the help you need if it’s not immediately available. If the physical separation from your learning institution is causing problems, let the education center staff advocate for you. They extremely flexible and never turn away visitors.
2) Plan, goal set, and schedule: Develop an educational plan. Think about what interests you. Visit the Occupational Encyclopedias at the library, or visit the Bureau of Labor and Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook at www.bls.gov/oco. What a tremendous resource! You may just find something new, something growing; or you may find that your dream job isn’t so dreamy. Better to find out now. Set goals and write them down. Do not settle for scripted degree plans. Make sure you hit the required wickets and discuss with your counselor classes that interest you, and will still satisfy the degree plan. Scheduling is important, but even more so as an online student. You must be self-motivated and hold yourself to deadlines. The TA/intern grading your papers on the other side of the world has no idea what TAD means and doesn’t care. I found that mapping out the entire course with all due dates on a printed calendar was beneficial. 3) Participate: Reach out to your professors early and get to know who they are, and what their expectations are for you. Communicate with them often but keep it professional. I got to know my professors by sending or sharing class-relevant articles or discussions. Your online educational experience is in your hands. It can be wonderful, or dreadful. It is truly up to you. Grades for online courses are weighted heavily by required minimum contribution to the online threaded discussions. Don’t do the minimum. Log in according to your planned schedule and participate often. Interaction and debate with fellow students enriches the online learning experience. The positive side effect was consistently high marks for participation. If you can do these things, you will succeed as I have. Sharpen your saw and prepare for what’s next. I won’t wish you good luck because you don’t need it. I wish you to be determined. Semper Fidelis!
School
In September, it's not just kids that are returning to school. The "old school" college student was fresh from high school with the goal of attending college to discover a career goal. But today, there is no stereotypical college student. Instead, there are adults of all ages pursuing a higher education from an array of life stages. There are many benefits to starting or returning to college during or after a military career. Here are two stories from the "new school" of higher education. Eric shares his educational journey from a Navy veteran turned college student turned MCCS Education Services Specialist. CWO2 Dine, a senior Marine demonstrates that servicemembers can achieve an educational milestone while stationed at MCAS Iwakuni.
From a Navy Veteran Who Has "Done
That"
Eric Drummond
Personal and Professional Development Advisor (Education) After over a decade of (often very) active duty in the Navy, I cashed in my chips so I could explore life as a student and civilian. Not long after getting my DD-214, I was pursuing my degree in classrooms. Most of the students were far younger than me and with considerably more knowledge of pop culture (though much worse taste in music). I will never forget that first day in class thinking that I was totally out of place and afraid that I might be the dumbest person there.
According to the Census Bureau, the number of people with bachelor’s degrees in the US has doubled over the last 40 years. While this is good news in terms of a more educated public, it also means that competition for jobs has increased accordingly. We have all either had the experience or heard the stories of college graduates holding good degrees having a hard time finding equally good employment. One thing that can make the biggest difference is having a plan from the start.
About ten minutes into my first class, that latter fear was gone.
Deciding to get an education is a good choice but doing it with a purpose is a great one. College is a massive investment of time, energy, and money, and it is best to get the most back from it as possible. Once we see clear goals, finding the right training/ education programs to reach them becomes much more efficient and thereby we can increase the odds of getting the best return on investment possible.
After graduating, I found work in higher education as a military services advisor. It was a very eye opening experience! I got the chance to observe traditional, young college students in classes with veterans using their GI Bill. The difference seemed to be profound. When I would ask students why they were going to college, I would get a variety of different answers. Among the traditional students who were fresh from high school, there was one response that was pretty consistent. The answer I most commonly got was, “it’s next, right?”
A great many people of today are under the impression that once someone graduates high school, college is what they will do next because … it just is. As a result, this creates students who do what the education industry thinks of as working backward; going to school, getting a degree, and then figuring out what to do with it. However, many of the veterans I have worked with were doing the exact opposite. Most seemed to know what it was they wanted to end up doing, and so they were in school to get trained to do it. If you wear, or have worn, a uniform, this should be a familiar concept.
The Personal & Professional Development Department is available for just that purpose. Our job is to help people
figure out what they want to be when they grow up (and it’s never too late to ask that question) and show you how to get there. Career Resources can take
into account people’s skills, interests, and aptitudes and then give customized options on what kind of opportunities exist. Education advising can then show the roads to getting the knowledge and qualifications to reach them. Free financial advising is also offered to assist in the costs of reaching those goals.
It is the role of the advisors here on base to exchange ideas with people about their life goals from the beginning of the process until the end. We can help show you the path, but it will be up to you to walk it. Just know that you have the tools to make it happen during your tour in Iwakuni. Personal & Professional Development is worth a look for both those with vision and those who are in search of a vision.

書道 Brush Up Against Shodo,
COMMUNITY ARTICLE
an Ancient Art
By Mikie Watanabe, Cultural Adaptation Specialist
In Japanese history, there are three significant cultures that people have continued to study: Kado (aka Ikebana, the Flower Arrangement), Sado (the Tea Ceremony), and Shodo (Calligraphy). A long time ago, it was popular for Japanese women to learn these arts prior to marriage because they would have grace. Let’s talk about shodo, the Japanese traditional art of calligraphy. Not only is shodo the study of writing technique, but it is also a way for the writer to concentrate on the soul. It is an artistic means to express your mind through handwriting. In Japan, people who can write beautifully are thought to be sophisticated. Many cultural elements came to Japan from China, and Shodo is one of them. It arrived courtesy of the Japanese envoy in the late 6th - early 7th century. The tools in this art have not changed much for hundreds of years. The most important part of the art is the fude (calligraphy brush), which originated in 1600-1046 BC. Brush handles are no longer commonly made with animal bones or shells. Brushes are made with animal hair, bird feathers, nylon and sometimes even human hair. When the brush is no longer usable, Japanese tradition states that it is buried at a shrine. Other shodo items include: Sumi (black ink); suzuri (ink stone); hanshi (Japanese paper); shitajiki (writing pad); and the bunchin, which is a heavy metal bar that serves as a paperweight. Recently, liquid ink is easy to find and use but in the past, solid ink in a stick form was used to make liquid ink. Rubbing it on the elevated part of the suzuri with some water helps you feel calm before starting to write.
Shodo also has a place in Japan’s New Year tradition. Around January 2, we have a special activity called “Kakizome”, the first day for calligraphy in the New Year. Afterwards, the calligraphy work is burned at a local “Tondo/Dondo Yaki” festival in midmonth. This children’s event serves to wish evil away. If the flame given off by the burning paper is high, it is a symbol that the calligrapher will be good at shodo art. Shodo is also an aspect of religious culture. Buddhist sutra is calligraphy written by monks, and hand-copying sutra was part of their training. Nowadays, people enjoy copying Buddhist sutra at a temple or their home, and believe it is good for mental concentration. The Cultural Adaptation Program offers you a new calligraphy class on September 18. This is a good opportunity to have a calligraphy experience that is a part of Japanese culture. Also, there is a Cultural Adaptation Trip to a brush festival in Hiroshima on September 23. Kumano Town in Hiroshima is famously known as the capital of brushes. They produce makeup brushes, popular since Hollywood makeup artists also use them. At the festival, you will be able to see a brush market with a display of over 10,000 brushes! If you would like to compete, you can participate in the Japanese Calligraphy Contest. We hope to see you in our calligraphy class or on our next Cultural Adaptation Trip.
Japan currently has five writing styles. The best known and understandable calligraphy style is kaisho. Kaisho is a block script such as the printed present-day characters. Through the interchange between Japanese and Chinese monks, more writing styles were evolved. Gyosho is a semi-cursive script that makes it more fluid to write. Sosho is a cursive script, invented as an informal means of writing the earlier scripts in a quick and abbreviated form. Tensho is a seal script, based on ancient Chinese inscriptions on bone and tortoise shell. The intricate seal script was considered too cumbersome for daily use, which led to reisho, a clerical script that was less complex. Nowadays, Japanese elementary school students take a calligraphy class called “Shuji” to learn penmanship. Some students and adults additionally take special calligraphy classes at private schools to gain the ability to write beautiful characters. They can be certified as a high-rank holder and go on to earn an instructor’s diploma.

Aki no Kouyou (a hke e no ko-yo) Writing and Photography by Linda Cordes, Community Writer
秋の紅葉
Aki no Kouyou is the Japanese phrase that describes the magical time of the year when everything explodes into beautiful shades of reds and oranges and yellows! It means fall foliage or colorful leaves of autumn, and living in Iwakuni means access to many great spots to enjoy all of the fall colors. Not sure about where to go to enjoy Aki no Kouyou? I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorite places to get you started, and one spot that I’ve just recently discovered.
fall foliage
Typically, the best time to enjoy Aki no Kouyou is the first two weeks in November, but some areas have been known to change at the end of October. It’s interesting to see the leaves throughout the different stages of changing colors. Try to visit Momijidani Park at Kintai often from the end of October until about the middle of November. There are so many beautiful areas around Iwakuni, and this article mentions only a few of them. This Fall, get out and enjoy all of that colors that Mother Nature has to offer. Keep in mind that these locations are beautiful in any season so you don’t have to wait to explore them. For more information on any of the locations listed and for assistance in making lodging or campsite reservations, please contact ITT at 253-4377.

Momijidani Park at Kintai The closest and easiest place to get to is the Momijidani Park at Kintai. While it’s not a very large area, it has quite a few maple trees to stroll around and enjoy. The maple trees (momiji) are the most popular for enjoying kouyou in Japan. I have to admit that it is my absolute favorite too. I don’t know if it’s the beautiful shape of the leaves or the different colors that one tree can produce, but I find myself staring at the maple leaves every year. I never get tired of admiring the beautiful leaves year after year, and I feel lucky to live so close an area where I can enjoy it every day. There’s also a beautiful red gazebo in this park that looks spectacular with the fall colors around it. While the Momijidani Park is the most colorful area at Kintai, it’s quite beautiful all around the Kintai area. Take a stroll around Kikko Park and then walk over to the ropeway station for some more beautiful scenery.
Momijidani Park on Miyajima A little bit further away is the Momijidani Park on Miyajima. It is the same name as the one in Iwakuni. I’m not sure which existed first, but momijidani means something along the lines of maple valley. There are a lot of maple trees at this wonderful park on Miyajima. It’s about a 20-minute walk from the ferry port, and once you get there be sure to spend some time exploring the entire park. It’s pretty big and has some gorgeous spots.
3
Mitaki Temple Not too far from downtown Hiroshima is the Mitaki Temple. I went for the first time a couple of years ago to see the fall foliage and the whole time I was there I was asking myself why I had not visited this temple sooner! It was that beautiful. The temple grounds are pretty large so be prepared to spend a few hours here enjoying the amazing colors. There’s even a cute little café on the temple grounds where you can sit and enjoy some Matcha Tea and a little snack. If you have a Shuin-cho (Temple Stamp book), be sure to bring it with you so you can get your Shuin (Temple Stamp)! Parking here can be a little tricky. They only have a very tiny parking lot, and it fills up quickly, so I do recommend going pretty early in the morning. You can also take the train from Iwakuni to Yokogawa and then switch to the Kabe Line from Yokogawa to Mitaki. It’s about a 20-minute walk from the station, and some of it is uphill.

Three Peaks If hiking is your thing, there are a few places that are beautiful and great for hiking. Mikuradake (Three Peaks) is about an hour away by car, and while it can be a little challenging at some spots, you can always hike as far as you want and turn around. If you can go all the way to the top, I highly recommend it; the view is great!. The road leading up to the parking lot where the hiking paths begin features maple trees that are so pretty when the leaves have all changed colors. You don’t necessarily have to be into hiking to enjoy Three Peaks. Bring a picnic lunch and just take in the beautiful scenery. Three Peaks has campgrounds available too.
Sandankyo Gorge Sandankyo Gorge in Hiroshima Prefecture is one of my favorite spots for hiking. It takes about two and a half hours to get there by car, but it is well worth the drive. The hike is not very difficult, and the scenery is truly breathtaking. There are many different types of trees that change into so many different colors in the fall. It’s almost like walking by a very large painting in some spots. Be sure to ride the river boat and check out the waterfalls if you go! For those of you who like to camp, there are campgrounds near the main entrance to Sandankyo.
Chomonkyo Gorge Chomonkyo Gorge is another scenic hiking spot that is located in Yamaguchi Prefecture. It’s pretty well known locally as being a great spot to enjoy the fall foliage. There are two sides you can start your hike from, and both sides have parking available, but it can get quite busy during the Kouyou season, so I recommend getting there a little early. There are restaurants in the area if you don’t feel like bringing a lunch with you.

8
Mominoki Park If you are more into sitting on a hillside and appreciating fall colors, then Mominoki Park is the perfect spot for you. I sometimes like just to hop in my car and drive through the mountains to enjoy the fall colors. I saw some spectacular gingko trees on my way to Mominoki Park one year. They were lined up on the side of the road, and I wanted to stop and stare, but there was no place for me to pull over so I just slowed down a little bit. I will randomly stop to take pictures if I’m able to and enjoy the scenery, but I always end up sitting on the hill at Mominoki for a little while before heading home. In the winter, this hill is known for the hours of sledding fun it provides to children of all ages, but in the fall it is the perfect spot to enjoy kouyou from afar. Take a picnic lunch and make an afternoon of it.
Taishaku-kyo Gorge The last place I want to mention is Taishaku-kyo Gorge in Hiroshima Prefecture. It’s about two hours from here by car, and I recommend hiking around this gorge in the fall. Taishaku-kyo is popular for its very large natural stone bridge called On-bashi. It is one of the three largest natural stone bridges in the world, and it is even more spectacular in person than the beautiful online photos. Be sure to check out the caves there too. There’s a small fee, but it’s worth it! There are also rental cabins and campgrounds available in the area for those of you who would like to spend the weekend surrounded by beautiful nature.
Linda Cordes grew up in Iwakuni and has spent most of her life here. She has been writing about local restaurants since 2011 on her blog and has recently started to write about her travel adventures.

COMMUNITY ARTICLE
forget survive; THRIVE! by Latoya Zavala, Chaplain, MCAS Iwakuni
The Walking Dead is a sensation in our society! Advertisements, talk shows, books, jokes, and all kinds of commercialism have benefited from this super popular show; popular, and yet somehow relevant. Relevant because I know that there are some among us, even some who are reading this article right now, who feel like the walking dead. What is it like to be one of the walking dead? The zombies on the popular show walk around aimlessly with their lives sucked from them. However, there is fan speculation that the title of the show may refer to the survivors. As they barely make it from one day to the next, they feel caught in a slow, downward spiraling process. They are technically alive, but barely surviving. They continue to feel like it is a struggle through each day just to make it to the next. The characters of the popular television series are a metaphor for those who suffer from depression ‌ or something like it. Depression, (or something like it), wicks away at some of the most valuable building blocks of living: purpose, hope, motivation, and inspiration. When these building blocks are in place, you are better positioned along the spectrum of life. You are living; not just surviving. Continuing along the spectrum of being alive, we find yet another level of existence, thriving. Dreams, goals, determination, commitment, fulfillment and achievement are additional building blocks that complete the human existence. Yes! This is what it means to thrive. But how do you know when you're thriving? Consider this scenario. You've just accomplished a major goal or fulfilled a short-term dream that you had been chasing for a while. When you think about that accomplishment, your eyes strangely moisten. You smile. You review pictures, or you post about it on social media. You might even close your eyes and relive it. You recount the obstacles you overcame. With every step of the journey, and as you remember, you feel the slightest sensation of victory. Now, you're on the other side. You did it! The feeling is nothing short of amazing. Eventually, or immediately, depending on your personality, you start reaching for the next level. You develop another goal, or perhaps plan for a totally new adventure. Anticipation starts to characterize your days as you work towards it. Excitement and expectation propel you through the busyness and trials of everyday life. You more readily contemplate and formulate what gives your life meaning and you feel you are fulfilling your purpose in life. You can take that depression, the negativity and the downward spiraling thoughts that used to hold you back, and roll them into your conquering strength. You are a conqueror. You are whole; You are thriving. As you are reading this article, you might be feeling it. Could it be? That swirling, strange yet invigorating, almost indescribable feeling? Oh, yeah ... There it is: the drive to thrive. What do I do with it? How do I hang on to it? Can it overcome the depression? Can I be free? Yes! You can be free. You can thrive. And there are many different ways to get there. Contact a chaplain or your providers at Behavioral Health to get started on your journey. Don't delay; a life of thriving awaits you!

WDEA AY R Thursday, September 10
The Community Counseling Program would like you to join together in making a statement about Suicide prevention. Community Counseling Program §253-6553
Why the Semicolon? What does the semicolon have to do with suicide prevention? It's quite simple. In a sentence, the semicolon connects two related, separate thoughts. Stylistically, the writer has chosen to connect them rather than leave them as independent sentences. It's a brief pause, before continuing to the rest of the thought. People who struggle with suicidal thoughts or attempts are considering ending their lives. The semicolon reminds us to get help if we're struggling or reach out to help others if we see troubling signs. A semicolon is a brief pause before continuing a life; the sentence doesn't have to end. M C C S I WA K U N I . C O M |
