FEATURES
, You Got This!
Let’s say you’re preparing to have or just had a baby and are wondering how you are going to manage all your new roles and responsibilities. There are many ways you can set the stage for a healthy start for all.
First things first—set the tone with visiting family
that this won’t be a tourist visit. When you have a new baby, you need to relax and learn about this new, little person. If family is coming to visit and help with the new baby, limit how many are coming and when they visit. It is easy to get overwhelmed and worn out when you have extra people in your house. It’s perfectly okay to refuse visitors when it’s been a long night and you just need to rest. It may also be a good idea to request that visitors only visit for 30-45 minutes max so that you can relax.
Next up,
you can set yourself up for smoother sailing by doing some simple pre-baby preparations. Prepare freezer meals that only require heating and serving; it will make your busy baby days less stressful. Iwakuni has a wonderful support system of women who like to prepare meals for new families. Take advantage of their offers and allow them to save you the stress. before the baby comes, take the time to identify someone who can come and babysit for you occasionally. It is important to your marriage to continue to have date nights and alone time with your spouse. It becomes very easy to brush this aside when the days JAPANESE are long and RAMEN the nights even longer. This allows you to connect with each other and have some quality adult time without being interrupted by your child’s needs.
15
24-25
There are other simple areas that give a healthy start to your new family.
Mom, it’s okay to put that baby down and take a shower! You will feel much better and be more prepared to tackle the days or nights ahead with your new little one who needs so much of you. Next, you can also put that crying baby down. When it seems you’ve tried everything, put the baby down in its crib and step away to clear your mind. Then, return to your child and look at them with fresh eyes. Did you miss something that may be bothersome? Don’t HONORABLE SILVERto check those fingers and forget toes for a stray hair wrapped MENTION around them.

DIRECT DIRECTOR from the
If you’re like most people, you are spending the first moments of the year focusing on goals or dreams. For many of us, it’s a time to make healthy or productive changes that will benefit our bodies, careers or quality of life. The challenge that most of us face as the year progresses, is to maintain the momentum with which we began the year. The professionals at Personal & Professional Development and MCF TB are here to assist you with reaching, and exceeding, your educational and professional milestones. Semper Fit’s fitness gurus have classes, leagues and wellness programs to help you stay mission ready. Recreational professionals at Outdoor Rec, SMP, IT&T and Cultural Adaptation would like to introduce you to a new hobby or leisure activity this year. Take advantage of all that we offer and make 2016 the year of achieving! Speaking of trying something new, MCCS is always adapting and changing our programs and facilities to improve our services to the community. An example of this is the new and improved Library. When doors reopen on January 16, many of the improvements will be obvious such as new fixtures, furniture and carpeting. But we have upgraded so much more than that. The new Library features 21st century tools to nurture creativity and experiment with new ideas. Our Library now offers a Makerspace, which is a communal area designated for learning. Free tools are available to rent and include cake decorating and crochet kits, a GoPro, tea ceremony and bicycle repair kits, 3D printer, Kindles, robots and more. Families will be happy to know that we’ve extended the children's book selection. Come see for yourself! The entire community is invited to the Library Open House on January 16. Bring the whole family out for refreshments, robot and 3D printer demonstrations, a scavenger hunt and prizes including a GoPro and Kindle! On January 18, we celebrate the birthday of a man who altered the course of our country and ushered in a new era of civil rights. Martin Luther King, Jr. promoted nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement and in his most famous speech stated that we should not “seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.” MCCS will have several events to recognize the holiday, from a basketball tournament at IronWorks on January 18, to a Youth and Teen Run on January 16, and a special buffet at Club Iwakuni on January 14. On behalf of the entire MCCS Iwakuni team, I wish you a happy, productive and adventure-filled New Year! Find your dream and make it happen. “Semper Fi” John E. Iwaniec Marine Corps Community Services Director

COMMUNITY ARTICLE
, You Got This!
It becomes very easy to brush this aside when the days are long and the nights even longer. This allows you to connect with each other and have some quality adult time without being interrupted by your child’s needs.
Don’t forget to check those fingers and toes for a stray hair wrapped around them.

Another way for Mom to take care of herself is to pump after feeds to store milk so that someone else may feed the baby. Pumping can allow Mom to catch a nap or to have some time away from the house without having to rush back to feed the baby. Tricare now covers breast pumps, so you can receive reimbursement for a hospital grade pump! There are also resources on the base to help you prepare for and navigate the new family process. A Baby Expo will be held at Club Iwakuni on January 23. This expo includes workshops, services, and vendors at your disposal to help with all that parenthood will bring. Lastly, Navy Marine Corps Relief Society provides Visiting Nurse services to come and provide prenatal visits, postpartum checkups, breastfeeding advice and support, weight checks and home safety checks. Take advantage of these services and give your new family a healthy start! Your priority as a new family is to bond with each other, learn your new routines and to rest whenever possible. NOT What You Had in College
Japan has some of the most delicious, and albeit strange, foods in the world. Some foods are immediately familiar to gaijin such as sushi, and some are not so inviting because of their appearance, smell, or “strange” reputation. Visitors travel from across the globe to get a taste of famous sashimi, live octopus, and even … raw horse meat. Then we have Japanese ramen. The food that falls into a category that even the most picky of eaters will try. Most people figure they lived on it throughout college, so how bad- or good- can it really be? Then, their love affair with this simple, yet amazing noodle bowl is sparked.

R
amen has become one of my favorite staples of Japan. I recently hosted a visitor from the states, and much to my surprise she dared to state that she “ … can buy this stuff for 30 cents in the states.” That is, until she tried this surprisingly complex noodle dish. She now openly states that she knows better.
HISTORY Ramenʼs history is complicated and varies from culture to culture, but one thing thatʼs mostly agreed upon is that the hot noodle dish (and sometimes cold) did not originate on the island. Instead, it was brought over by the Chinese in the 19th century to port cities such as Kobe and Yokohama.
Side-note: I highly recommend visiting Yokohama for their amazing version of the dish. It is assumed that ramenʼs popularity expanded greatly after the war when rice was harder to come by while rationing was taking place, and wheat was thereby being imported from the US. Its humble beginnings as a “stamina” food have come a long way, and ramen is now considered a well sought after, gourmet meal with dedicated followers around the world. In fact, a ramen restaurant in Tokyo proudly boasts a Michelin star! RAMEN STYLES There are many different types of ramen. In fact, it is said that there are twenty-one
THOUSAND ramen shops in the greater Tokyo area alone. 21,000! Though the basic recipe consists of three main ingredients, donʼt let that fool you into thinking itʼs just a bowl of noodles - Japanese ramen is a bowl of deliciousness. THE BROTH The aromatic broth of ramen is tantalizing - for lack of a better word. Walking along rows of street stalls or ramen shops can be a treat. Broths are typically classified by what is called “heaviness” which essentially means how rich the broth is. NOODLES GALORE! Ramen chefs tend to be very particular in their noodle choice. The noodle will vary depending on the broth, bounciness, and general taste of the chef at hand. In ramen shops you will see freshly made noodles that are thin and straight, or thin and wavy. Straight noodles are used in heartier soups like Tonkotsu. These thicker soups donʼt need “waves” for the broth to adhere to as the liquid adheres to the straight noodles for the perfect tasting bite. Thinner soups, like shio based ramen, are typically found with wavy noodles. Either way, ramen noodles are boss.
BROTHS
18
SHIO
Shio salt, or the oldest base for ramen broth, is a lighter, transparent broth that tends to be a bit saltier than the other three major ramen broths. It is the most common among western dishes.
SHOYU
A soy sauce broth usually laced with a meat broth (either chicken, fish or beef). This brown and transparent broth is tangy and delicious - but not too strong in flavor for a newbie.
MISO
This broth is the youngest of the four main broths, but has gained in popularity over the years. Miso paste gives this broth a rich, robust flavor that is popular in northern Japan where the winters can get extremely cold.
P R E V I E W M A G A Z I N E | F I N D U S O N F A C E B O O K : M C C S I WA K U N I
TOPPINGS The toppings placed on a bowl of ramen are often what gives a ramen shop its identity. Proteins such as meat, fish and eggs are often found atop a bowl, but everything from fresh vegetables to seaweed complement the dish and make it tailored to you. One of my favorite toppings, though a new addition to ramen dishes, is kimchi. The Korean cabbage adds a nice bite to a piping hot bowl of noodles. Itʼs best to try everything at least once, so be sure to explore your options and try your best to be open-minded. HOW TO EAT A lot of thought and effort goes into a bowl of ramen, and any master chef will let you know that they donʼt want their noodles getting soggy or soft once they hit the broth. A compromised ramen is a no-no. In other words, eat up as soon as you receive your bowl! It is also customary to make slurping sounds as loud as you want/need. This is not only a sign of respect and that you are enjoying the dish, but that youʼre eating it quickly before the chefʼs masterpiece gets soggy. Let that inner child out - slurp away!
TONKOT SU
Once you get the slurping down, then take a tour of the dish by drinking some broth and tasting other toppings. By taking turns between the ingredients you will have the richest experience possible. Many ramen shops will offer bibs, so be sure to request one if you find yourself slurping extra enthusiastically. You can also tell your friends itʼs a requirement, because that would just be funny. YOU CAN MAKE AT HOME (INSTANT) Instant ramen noodles are a relatively new concept, but they have certainly made an impact on fast, inexpensive food as we know it. Invented in 1958, instant ramen noodles took Japan by storm and made their way to the US where college students found that this package of noodles could satisfy hunger through finals - and CHEAP! Many of us may or may not want to admit every now and again we have a hankering for those inexpensive nuggets of goodness. Here in Japan, you can find high-end ramen kits usually in the refrigerated section. Pictures on the package will help you with how to prepare them. Keep some stocked up for those rainy days when you just want to stay in (to do all those productive things that are on your to-do list, of course) - youʼll thank me later. SO WHILE IN JAPAN… Whether youʼve tried the dish or not, it would be wise to try the different flavors of ramen as much as possible. The US has recently developed an affinity for the dish and foodies have rejoiced. The $4-7 bowl of deliciousness wonʼt be found in the states for a similar price, or authentic taste, for that matter. You may be aboard MCAS Iwakuni, but donʼt forget to go abroad while youʼre here and enjoy some slurping of your own!
A favorite among the Japanese, this broth is made from boiling pork bone for a whopping 12 -15 hours and is typically a very rich, opaque soup base. It is said some master chefs can even spend up to 60 hours making the perfect tonkotsu broth.

Play it Safe on the Slopes Jeramie Johnson, MCCS Safety Manager Whether you’re a beginner skier or a seasoned snowboarder, a day on the mountain can be exciting. It can also be intimidating for anyone who is just learning. These helpful hints will come in handy when planning your next adventure. The day will be fun, but along with sports comes safety and risks. The rules are in place for a reason−primarily to keep you and others safe. When you arrive at the resort, take a minute to familiarize yourself with any guidance given by the resort staff or trip guides. Practice good slope etiquette. Always be aware of fellow skiers or riders to avoid collisions. Don’t bow to peer pressure and attempt a run or jump that is beyond your ability. Know your limits. Dress for the occasion.
Finally, you will fall. More than likely, you will hit your head. It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when. When this does occur, you need to be able to recognize the symptoms of head injury and know when to seek help. Research confirms that head injuries are the most common cause of death among skiers and snowboarders. Over half of these fatalities could have been avoided by wearing head protection. Head protection is mandatory on all outdoor recreation trips. I encourage everyone to educate themselves on the benefits and limitations of helmet use. Have fun this season, and just be sure to play it safe! M C C S I WA K U N I . C O M |

Japanese New Year is one of the biggest traditional events. Unlike the USA, where festivities occur in one night, Japanʼs biggest holiday continues weeks into the year. Many businesses and services close for the week after the New Year, providing the masses time to flock to temples and relativesʼ homes for celebration. As the New Year approaches, you may have noticed many curious items for sale at grocery, department, and convenience stores. Just like Americans who may hang a wreath and drink eggnog during the holidays, Japanese decorate around the home and eat particular foods for the New Year.
Local
New Year
Traditions By Mikie Watanabe Cultural Adaptation Specialist
Outside the home, we decorate with shimenawa, a rope made of rice straw, which signifies a sacred location such as a shrine. But during the New Year, people hang them on the entrance of a house, or in the front of their car to protect the structures for the following year. Kadomatsu are decorations made with symbolic materials placed outside front doors. Pine tree branches symbolize longevity. Bamboo stalks represent prosperity. Plum tree branches symbolize constancy. Inside the home, we display a kagami mochi. This is a circular, flat rice cake offered to Shinto and Buddhist deities. On New Yearʼs Day, most Japanese people will gather with family and enjoy osechi. This special meal, presented in a gorgeous bento box, contains a large variety of different dishes. Each dish has meanings for good luck. After the New Year, we keep celebrating! On January 7, we eat nanakusa-gayu, a custom that originated in ancient China. We believe that eating this seven-herb rice porridge may bring good health, and ward off evil. The herbs are also a good
remedy from eating too many New Year's delicacies over the holidays. In mid-January, you may see groups of people gathered around large bonfires near rivers. Tondo/Dondo matsuri were originally held on the day of the first full moon of the year. Nowadays, it is usually held on the 2nd or 3rd weekend of January (around the 15th). There is eating, drinking and a bonfire used to burn New Yearʼs decorations. Neighborhood kids go door to door gathering decorations before bringing them to the party. At the festival, we like to eat sweet bean soup and grilled mochi. We wish for something, such as the safety of oneʼs family or a state of perfect health over the year. Also, it is customary to burn calligraphy that we wrote on January 2. If the paper makes it way toward the top of the flaming bonfire, we believe that the person is becoming a good calligrapher.
