I volunteered at a children's home with twenty other Marines through the Single Marine Program. It afforded us the opportunity to give back to the community, and we made a visible difference in the lives of others. Spending time with the children outside of our normal routine, we witnessed happiness. Pure happiness is not something you see every day. - LCpl Timothy J. Watkins

WHO WE ARE KOJI ASABAYASHI POSITION: IT&T Tour Guide "I like helping Marines and their families get out and explore Japan."
It's my first time here and the new Barbershop is great. The service is good and fast. It's clean and I live near here, so it's easy to get to. I went one time to the other by the MCX and this one seems large. They've done a good job. - LT Stephen C. Sears

Tiny Mug of Meatloaf by Heather A. Valentine, Community Writer
Many of you are missing a home cooked meal, but barracks living doesn't mean that pre-packaged microwaveable meals are your only option. Put that microwave of yours to better use! Grab a mug or a mason jar, some nonstick cooking spray, and try out an easy and delicious "Mug Meal" recipe.
MT. FUJI TRIPS JULY 14-18 JULY 28 - AUGUST 1 AUGUST 18 - 22 SIGN-UP BEGINS 60 DAYS PRIOR
1/4 lb. lean ground beef 1 tsp onion soup mix 2 tbs quick-cooking oats or crushed Ritz crackers 1 tbs ketchup 2 tbs 2% milk *1/4 medium bell pepper, diced *Topping: 1 tsp brown sugar 1 tbs ketchup *optional Spray the inside of a microwaveable mug with nonstick cooking spray. In a small bowl combine the meatloaf ingredients. Stir in the ground beef; mix well. Form loaf and place into the mug. Cover and microwave for 3 minutes, or until meat reaches 160° (meat should no longer be pink); drain. In a separate bowl, mix the topping ingredients. Spread them over cooked meatloaf, and microwave for a minute. Let it cool, then enjoy the aroma and the taste of a delicious home cooked meal. If your neighbors start knocking on your door, asking for a dinner invite, don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Volunteering and giving back to my community was instilled in me at a very young age. The choice to volunteer and give
back goes beyond my childhood years, into my career as a Marine overseas serving in Japan. I volunteer because I believe that volunteering is vital in building local relationships filled with trust and understanding.
Furthermore, I volunteer to answer a need that a local area may have. My desire
is to meet those needs that a community has to the best of my ability. Lastly, I volunteer to expand my worldview and to better myself. Volunteering steers me down a path of selflessness and allows me to put others’ needs and welfare above my own.
I feel amazed and humbled by what I have
been able to do through the SMP Program. The SMP has provided me with many opportunities to not only serve, but learn about the community and country I am living in. Serving with the SMP has always been a wonderful and fulfilling experience. The most recent volunteering I have done was the SMP Beach Clean-Up. Through all of the service I have been able to do, I can truly say that my worldview has been expanded, and I have realized how important it is to embrace the culture that I am in and to give back to it.

MCCS Youth Sports provides volunteer opportunities for
all aboard MCAS, Iwakuni to work with kids ages 3-15. My interview with one of our current coaches, Dylan Moger, gives you a glimpse of what you have to gain, besides an LOA, from being a Youth Sports (YS) coach. Who is Dylan Moger? “I am a 20-year-old combat engineer attached with MWSS 171, who comes from a small town in Minnesota, called Winona. Growing up, I played multiple sports to include football, basketball, and baseball. In my free time, I love to be outdoors hunting and fishing. I enjoy volunteering and helping others reach their goals.”
"Not everyone is the same and not everyone is going to develop equally, so you need to be respectful of that and help others to learn in their own unique way."
What does coaching mean to you? “I believe that every child should not be deprived of the opportunity to play sports and be coached to develop their skills. Coaching with Youth Sports has helped me take the knowledge and the skills I have learned and pass it on to the kids of the next generation.”
14
What is the most challenging? “I think the most challenging part about coaching is [that] at the end of the year you have to say goodbye. But it is also the most rewarding because you know the hours that you put into it was worth, it and you actually get to see the progress along with the impact you made on the kids and their parents.” What is the funniest experience as a coach, so far? “One baseball practice with my three-four-year-olds, a kid hit off the tee, and naturally all the defensive players ran to the ball -- but, so did the kid who hit the ball. With the bat in hand, he ran grabbing the ball and then ran to first base. The player on first base took off his hat, hit his head and said “Oh My Goodness!” in the funniest voice ever, and I just started laughing.”
What have you come to learn about yourself coaching Youth Sports? “My patience has really grown. Not everyone is the same, and not everyone is going to develop equally, so you need to be respectful of that and help others to learn in their own unique way.”

Coach That ’s my
COMMUNITY ARTICLE
by Angela Ryberg, MCCS Youth Sports Coordinator
What advice would you offer to others to motivate them to coach? “When I first got involved in Youth Sports, I’ll admit I didn’t know what I was getting into. It wasn’t until a fellow Marine told me I should do it with him. If anyone is thinking about it, all I can say is try it out. It’s only two to three hours of your time a week, to make an impact on someone's life.” What is the best part about being a coach? “The best thing about coaching Youth Sports is passing on the knowledge that I was taught at their ages and watching each child develop their own set of skills. If you had a bad day at work or you're just not feeling it, the kids can easily turn your day around and put a smile on your face. Even when the season is over it's great to see you have made an impact on a kid's life."
I’ll be walking around base or at the PX and out of nowhere I’ll hear, “Hey look mom, it's my coach!” “Hi Coach!”

Fun with a
Special Event by Jessica Guthrie, Community Writer
We would like to thank Jessica Guthrie for being a Preview community writer for three years, and for sharing her knowledge and experience with the community. The Preview team wishes her and her family the best of luck.
In the almost four years
I have lived in Iwakuni I have planned a number of special events using base facilities and resources, mainly working with MCCS to produce them. I’ve planned a promotion party, birthday parties, and community events. While taking on events like these can seem overwhelming at times, it doesn’t have to be. Here is how I created five successful events: There are a couple of things you should know about me before moving on. I hate cooking. And I’m not great at it. I prefer to let the experts create fabulous meals,
20
P R E V I E W M A G A Z I N E | F I N D U S O N F A C E B O O K : M C C S I WA K U N I
and so I can focus on the things I do best: manage, plan, decorate and enjoy. I also don’t have much time. I’m a self-employed wife and mother who also volunteers and travels. I prefer to do as little time-intensive and manual labor as possible, especially when it comes to set up, tear down and clean up. With the above character traits in mind, I used the resources available to me to take care of the tasks I had no interest in dealing with.
Totally 80's Ladies Night Out
ARTICLE DIVISION
I heard that the movie Breakfast Club was turning 30, so I figured it would be fun to get together with some friends and plan a movie marathon to watch The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles. The more friends I invited, the more friends they wanted to invite, so we soon had several dozen women interested. A community room wasn’t going to be big enough so I rented the Sakura Theater. I had to choose a Tuesday or Wednesday evening, when the theater wasn’t already open, which wasn’t a problem. Everyone was encouraged to dress up in 80’s garb, and I took donations for the theater reservation fee. The snack bar was open for ladies to purchase treats. The photos pop up now and then on Facebook and the memories of the evening are fond ones. The best part? No clean up.
Totally 80's Vow Renewal & Party
Can you tell I love the 80s? In honor of my 39th birthday and the spouse and I being hitched for 15 years, we decided to host a Wedding Singer-themed birthday party/vow renewal ceremony in the Club Iwakuni ballroom. I ordered almost $800 worth of food from Club Iwakuni Catering for my guests, so the room rental fee was waived. We were able to get into the club a few hours early to decorate in totally 80’s fashion, complete with a wedding arch. We also hired a DJ to keep the party pumping with all the best music from the decade. There was a DJ and fun games like musical chairs and 80’s trivia. Guests were encouraged to dress up as their favorite 80’s personality. I created the room layout and chose tablecloth and napkin colors. We had a staff member dedicated to our event and a cash bar open with a dedicated bartender, all of which made the event run smoothly. Another success!
Kid's Birthday Party at the Sakura Assembly Hall
Both of my sons have April birthdays, and while I swore I would never make them have birthday parties together, they actually like it. So, for their 8th and 12th birthdays, we had a Monsters University birthday party at Sakura Theater. The kids were encouraged to dress up as monsters, and we had jars of green slime for party favors. All I had to do for the venue was make a reservation, (contact the Sakura Assembly Hall for pricing details) select a movie from the menu of the Naval Motion Picture Library, and for a little extra they even cleaned up all the spilled soda and popcorn. Sold. The staff also set up tables in the lobby for cake and gifts, and the snack bar was open. I purchased a small drink and popcorn for each child. I got an ice cream cake from Baskin-Robbins and put a couple of monsters figurines on it. My sons were happy.
The Iwakuni Home-Business Expo I had been involved with the Craft Fair, then the Craft and Information Expo and now the Iwakuni Home Business Expo (same event, just changed the name to include more types of home-based businesses) since the fall of 2012. At first, we used the hallway of Crossroads Mall, which was free. We borrowed tables and chairs from Outdoor Recreation and kept the event casual and cheap. To get the tables from Outdoor Rec, we rented a truck by the hour from Typhoon Motors. The table fee funds we collected went toward the truck rental and purchasing ads in Preview magazine, television screens around base, and before movies at the Sakura Assembly Hall. The MCCS Marketing Department handles everything from ad design to placement. Once our event grew too large to have it comfortably at Crossroads Mall, we moved to the Club Iwakuni ballroom. The ballroom can cost as much as $350, however, rental fees are waived with certain food purchases. It is best to talk with Club Iwakuni’s Catering Manager to get all the options that will work for your event including table layout, linens and power needs. No more having to haul tables from Outdoor Rec, or cleaning up! #winning In all instances, because the event was open to the public, not a private party, we had to get Special Event approval from both the base and MCCS. You can pick up the Special Function/ Fundraiser forms at the Internal Control Office, which is housed in the same building as the MCX Furniture Store. Before you can advertise the event, it must be approved.
The Spouse's Retirement Party Now I’m in the throes of planning my husband’s retirement party. After 20 years of serving in the Corps, I want to make sure he has an enjoyable event that spotlights his career. I’m working with Club Iwakuni once again, deciding on whether to rent a dining room or the ballroom, bar, decorations, table layout and selecting the buffet menu. (It’ll probably be the same as our 80’s party; the food was delicious and well-received by the guests.) However, I am sure it will be a success because I know I have the facilities, support, and resources I need! COMMUNITY ARTICLE
Yakiniku by Cameron Mangels, Community Writer
Yakiniku. Literally translated: Grilled Meat! Yakiniku
is so much more than just cooked meat! First, let’s get into a little history and why yakiniku restaurants exist. For the vegetarians out there, this article is not for you. For a few hundred years, eating meat was actually prohibited in Japan. It wasn’t until the Meiji Restoration that people were, once again, allowed the beauty of eating meat. One of the first successes in serving meat came in the style of yakiniku. Yakiniku is heavily based on a South Korean style of restaurant, known in the U.S. as simply “Korean BBQ.” Here in Japan, they have slightly altered the sauces to more closely align with Japanese tastes.
The cooking style is what sets yakiniku aside from other sit-down restaurants. You cook it yourself! You
order the types of meat you would like as well as vegetables to go with it. In South Korea, they automatically serve banchan (small side-dishes with various items). You may order that as an extra in most yakiniku places here, as well. In the center of your table is a grill. Usually it is a gas grill, but some places use briquettes for a more natural fire. Above your table is an air exhaust system to expel the excess smoke created by grilling your various meats and vegetables.
Now, the good part: What types of meat? Beef is the
most popular, but also the most expensive. More common meats are chicken, pork, lamb, and seafood. Some types of meat call for a special marinade or sauce. Some items have no sauce, but you can add your own toppings from the other sauces on the side. I like to grab a leaf of lettuce, throw on some bean paste, grab the beef off the grill, and slap it on top of the paste. I wrap it up like a mini burrito and stuff my face in one big bite. Then I look for the next morsel ready to be taken off the grill.
If you feel more adventurous, you can order the types
of meat that we amerika-jin are not used to. Horumon, or "discarded items" are very popular in Japan and include tongue, liver and intestine (mainly what we think of as “organ meats”). The animal parts that U.S. companies mix together to make hot dogs are the items that are served more as a delicacy here. If you have never tried a yakiniku place, hopefully this article will encourage you to venture out and do so. If you’d like to make yakiniku at home, but don’t know where to start, sign up for the Restaurant & Grocery Store Cultural Trip on August 19. They can help you select the right sauces and cuts of meat.
If you like Japanese food, Cultural Adaptation also has cooking classes. Learn how to cook with local, Iwakuni
ingredients in the Healthy Simple Cooking class on July 13. On August 4, you can learn how to make Iwakuni sushi. What are you waiting for? Get cooking!

The SAC
What's it all about?
by Tonya Van Winkle, School Age Center Director (Acting) The SAC is affiliated with the Boys & Girls’ Club, and we encourage kids to make great choices by focusing on academics, a healthy lifestyle and being a good citizen. Before school, children are dropped off at the center by their parents to eat breakfast and enjoy quiet play before walking over to the school. After school, the SAC staff meets the children at the elementary school and escorts them back to the SAC. Once the children get checked in, they enjoy a healthy snack. Next, the staff helps the children complete their homework assignments during Power Hour. Every child has a unique learning style, and they are offered support in either one-on-one or small group settings based on their needs. After homework, SAC kids get to have fun and get their bodies moving. The staff supervises the children while they play outside on the playground. After outside play, children can play inside at the different learning centers. In the summer, the SAC works with Camp Adventure to provide a full day program for children ages 5-10.
