Marine to MCCS
Professional
by Tabetha den Dekker, MCCS Human Resources Personnel Security The transition from active duty Marine to a military spouse, to a college student, and finally to an employee with MCCS Human Resources has been an exciting experience! Completing this transition, from one position to another, is never done alone. You always have to look for help that may not be fully advertised, but is surely available. When I decided to seek employment here in Iwakuni, I had no idea how to build a résumé, nor did I have the skills to interview. I needed help and the Personal & Professional Development (P&PD) staff was there to help teach me those valuable skills.
Next, I applied for the position that I felt I was qualified for and focused my résumé on reflecting the position description in the job posting. The challenging aspect was to translate the skills I knew I had from military terminology to civilian language. Once the job posting closed, I received a call from HR for an interview. Since I was active duty in the Marine Corps, I had not had a civilian job in over four years. You can imagine how anxious I was. This is where the interview skills class with P&PD helped prepare me for the interview They taught me the “do’s” and “don’ts” before, during, and after the interview process, and I was armed with information about what the interviewer is allowed to ask. Two weeks af ter the interview, they offered me the job! Since my Marine Corps and academic career, I have achieved my next milestone in life. I cannot emphasize the boost to my confidence and my “Go get ‘em!” attitude. I'm thankful to the helpful staff at P&PD who helped me gain the skills to start my MCCS career.

MCAS Iwakuni
Marine Corps Ball November 3, 4 & 5
A NIGHT OF HONOR,
TRADITION, AND CELEBRATION Zaneta Padilla, MCCS Marketing or Community Writer This year marks the Marine Corps’ 241st birthday. With every birthday, there’s one event in November rich with history and tradition to commemorate the Marine Corps’ humble beginning—the Marine Corps Birthday Ball. Besides being a night for glamour, esprit de corps, and building camaraderie, the Marine Corps Ball is a night to look back at where the Marine Corps has been, and look to all of the men and women who have built our beloved Corps. Sometimes traditions can become routine and their meanings are lost. In his Marine Corps Order No. 47, Commandant John A. Lejeune addresses the Marines with, “It is fitting that we who are Marines should commemorate the birthday of our corps by calling to mind the glories of its long and illustrious history.” This year, while you're celebrating the Marine Corps' 241st birthday, take time to reflect on what the Marine Corps has done, how far it has come in its history, and honor all Marines past and present who have made the Marine Corps what it is today. Happy Birthday, Marines!
THE COLOR GUARD Cpl Auldon Robinson What does it mean to be a member of the United States Marine Corps Color Guard? This is a question that only a few have the honor and the privilege to answer. As a color guard member, I have great respect for our nation’s colors and what they represent to me: pride, self-belonging, and a long history of the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice. All of these things exist so that I might have the power or right to act, speak, or think as I please. Every day that I wake up and pass by our nation’s colors and see the big red, white, and blue, I render the best salute I can and walk by them humbly. When I was a young Marine, I was chosen to be a part of a retirement ceremony. This ceremony was very special due to the fact that the retiree requested to have the color guard present. At this time, I was not yet a part of the color guard, but this was the ceremony that would change my perspective on it. During the ceremony, and after watching MCAS Iwakuni H&HS color guard march on the colors, I found myself obsessed with the thought of holding our nation’s colors. The way they carried the colors and moved in sequence was astounding and bone-chilling. I had never felt so much desire to be a part of something so significant since I decided to become a Marine. Filled with so much passion to hold those colors, I wanted to know any and everything I needed to know to do so. After talking to the color sergeant, and explaining how much I wanted to be a part of the color guard, he allowed me to practice with them. After months of practicing, I was asked to become a part of the color guard by being the right rifle bearer. It was the most exhilarating feeling one could have, knowing that you’re the person protecting your nation’s colors. Nine months later, that feeling would not compare to the passion I have now. I am now a non-commissioned officer, and holding the colors that I once safeguarded. My experiences as a color bearer compares to no other experiences I have had in the Marine Corps. I will continue to uphold the best traditions when carrying our nation’s colors, and maybe one day, I will inspire the next young Marine to do the same.
THE POW/MIA TABLE Chaplain Jeff Logan, CDR, USN The POW-MIA table is a reminder to me of loss and sacrifice the loss of fellow servicemembers who made great sacrifices and are now guarding the gates of heaven. Yet, it is not just losses and sacrifices among uniformed personnel. The table reminds me of the losses and costly sacrifices by their families as well. I worked on Casualty Assistance Calls Officer teams, being present when the military informs wives and family members of the tragic loss due to sacrifices made by their loved one. I journeyed alongside them as they came to grips with a new reality, and carry their faces with me to this day. There is honor in defending our country, even giving the “full measure of sacrifice,” but the costs are counted on the home front as well. I am greatly honored to have served alongside Marines in battle, and I am just as privileged to support their families, especially in the most demanding of times. “Lest We Forget” sums up my thoughts of the POW-MIA table! Do not forget those who are not here tonight—those in uniform, as well as their family members. They have sacrificed much to defend our freedom.
THE PAGEANT LCpl Scott G. Andrews, LCpl Xzavier V. Rhodes, LCpl Joslyann Manzanohernandez As junior Marines, we have been indoctrinated within the enlisted ranks of the Marine Corps for a year or less. We are privileged to honor the history of the Marine Corps and our fallen Marines. Our appreciation for Marine Corps history and its traditions is amplified as a result of this time honored custom. We believe that the progression of time told through a demonstration of the evolution of Marine Corps uniforms is an outstanding form of education for which every Marine should be responsible. All Marines are held to the standard of understanding basic Marine Corps history. This particular tradition is an effective, entertaining, and modest way of teaching fellow Marines the long and treasured history of the Marine Corps. We look forward to furthering our education in all aspects of the Marine Corps, including its history, as well as aiding fellow Marines to enhance their own Marine Corps knowledge throughout our careers. Being part of the ceremony is extremely motivating because it gives us a sense of pride in our uniform and pride in being part of the world’s most elite fighting force.
TUN TAVERN Eric Perez, MCCS Facilities Maintenance For as long as anyone in MCCS Maintenance can remember, we have set up the Tun Tavern model in front of the IronWorks Gym. Every year, Marines, Sailors, Civilians and their guests walk through to have their picture taken and it sets the tone of the Marine Corps Ball. This year is no exception. Our maintenance staff spends several weeks prior to the Ball ensuring that the model is set up correctly, safely, and any minor repairs are completed. This guarantees that the Tavern is aesthetically pleasing to all who walk through the doors which are dedicated to the place where Captain Samuel Nicholas raised those first two battalions of Marines. This year, some may notice that the Tun Tavern may look a little different. That is due to the hard work provided by the Marines of MWSS-171. Last year, MCCS received a badly needed, new model that replaced an older version. This new model will hopefully last us for many years to come, and we certainly appreciate the hard work and dedication that the men and women of MWSS-171 put into building MCAS Iwakuni’s new Tun Tavern.
THE MEAL Jessica McFarlane, Public Affairs Specialist Most of the 2,850 guests that attend the Marine Corps Ball will dine on their shrimp cocktail and steak, blissfully unaware of the elaborate production that is unfolding behind IronWorks Gym. That’s all part of the plan and is a reflection of the enormous planning and efforts that go into a highly attended catered event. As a matter of fact, preparation for MCAS Iwakuni’s largest catered meal service started back in June. “Military food operation is very different from the hotel and food industry. We have to prepare and order months in advance,” said Club Iwakuni Executive Chef Etsuji Umezu. Chef Umezu spent the majority of his career in hotel hospitality prior to becoming the Executive Chef at Camp Foster Ocean Breeze for six years. This is his second year as Club Iwakuni Executive Chef for MCAS Iwakuni’s Marine Corps Ball. He worked together with the Marine Corps Ball Committee on the menu for the celebration, which was finalized months ago. “At the tasting, I provided the Marine Corps Ball Committee different entrées, salads, vegetable sides and starches and they picked their favorites,” says Umezu. “I offered new options this year, and they selected the new menu items.” “It takes a staff of 100 to execute the meal and beverage service alone, including servers, cooks, bartenders, runners and dishwashers.” “Marines work for their country, and they have to go wherever they are needed. So at the Ball we can provide them a memorable experience,” shared Chef Umezu. “Food is just one part of the event, and I just want them to have a great time.”

Celebrating the
Smokeout
Celebrating the Marine Corps by E. Susanne Koch, Fitness & Health Promotion Director
I have not failed,
I've just found 10,000 ways that
won't work. According to the Institute of Medicine’s Combating Tobacco Use in Military and Veteran Populations 2009 Report, tobacco use affects military readiness by:
Greatly Decreasing
stamina & lung capacity affecting physical endurance and performance
Reducing
fine motor coordination
Impairing
vigilance & cognitive function due to nicotine withdrawal
Reducing
ability to cope with stress
Leading to
Higher Rates of absenteeism & reduction in productivity
Not quite ready for a classroom setting? Try these!
•• Check out the DoD’s Quit Tobacco program at www.ucanquit2.org
•• Download the Smokefree MIL app •• Talk with your Primary Care Manager about starting Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT).
Y
ou may have heard those famous words by Thomas Edison depicting his work inventing the light bulb. For those who battle with nicotine addiction, however, attempting to quit may seem like a failure.
A tobacco user attempts to quit an average of seven to nine times before becoming tobacco free. Each of these attempts, though seeming futile to the quitter, are valuable lessons towards becoming tobacco free. The Marine Corps is the highest user of nicotine products (to include smokeless and electronic nicotine delivery systems such as e-cigarettes) of any of the uniformed services. Over 60% of Marines identified having used nicotine in the last 12 months.
T
his year, as part of the annual Great American Smokeout campaign, Semper Fit Health Promotion will be implementing the newly developed Operation Tobacco-Free Marine program. Operation Tobacco Free Marine is being launched Marne Corps-wide this fall. The new initiative is based upon guidance from the DoD Service-wide Tobacco Policy (April 2016), the Navy and Marine Corps Tobacco Policy and direction from General Robert B. Neller, 37th Commandant of the Marine Corps (CMC). In his guidance, the CMC’s emphasis is on “an increase [in] the number of deployable and ready Marines across the Force” with a requirement to “immediately and aggressively reduce the number of non-deployable Marines and Sailors.” The CMC also identifies that “this effort must address destructive behaviors.” Not only should tobacco use be seen as a destructive behavior because of its ability to impair performance and health, but smokers see up to a 70% reduction in bone/wound healing time. This is due to the reduction in oxygen-carrying capacity caused by smoking. One study of the Royal Marine Recruits showed a two times greater risk of injury in smoking recruits. It’s simple: tobacco use affects the number of “deployable and ready Marines across the force.” Make November 17th your day to quit! There are several resources out there to help. Operation Tobacco-Free Marine is a six-week program offered quarterly. The class is open to all US ID cardholders and can be tailored as smaller sessions (2-4) for units. Whatever your preferred method, make 2016 your year to quit … this time for good.
