SAILORS & FAMILIES

MCCS HAPPY BIRTHDAY

U.S. NAVY! DID YOU KNOW: There are over 700 Sailors and family members at MCAS Iwakuni as of July 2016.

There are currently 330,590 Sailors on active duty.

The first official Seal of the Navy was created by the Continental Congress in 1780. The current seal was approved in 1957 by President Eisenhower and includes both land and sea. Between these years various seals were used, often based on the status of the Navy: afloat featured only water, ashore featured land and sea.

The Navy Birthday may be October 13, but the Navy Ball on MCAS Iwakuni is October 8.

S

On October 13, the U.S. Navy will celebrate its 241st birthday. Sailors stationed aboard MCAS Iwakuni are planning to celebrate at the Navy Ball. But af ter the party is over, Sailors and their families, especially those new to Iwakuni, may feel a little like fish out of water living on a Marine Corps Air Station. Those new to Iwakuni may wonder what else is available for them, and a big question for others is: where is the nearest Fleet and Family Support Center? Do not fear! While aboard MCAS Iwakuni, Sailors, (and even Soldiers and Airmen) can find the same services they know and love under slightly different names. We do have a Lending Locker (operated by Personal & Professional Development), a program for single and unaccompanied service members (the Single Marine Program), and MWR facilities offering state-of-the-ar t gym equipment (IronWorks Gym) as well as Outdoor Recreation. MCCS programs are available to all active duty servicemembers stationed at MCAS Iwakuni. Many of your favorite workshops, training, and family events offered at your last duty station are available under either Marine Corps Family Team

Building (MCFTB) or Personal & Professional Development (P&PD). Below are some recurring workshops and events unique to MCFTB Iwakuni that are open to all: Learn about how people express love, what love language you speak, and how to speak your spouse’s love language at 5 Love Languages. Looking for a unique way to unwind and destress? Join MCFTB for Color Your World to tr y adult coloring, a worldwide sensation. Have you heard about our one-day workshop, LifeSkills for Marines? It’s also for you too! LifeSkills for Marines is open to all branches and works to enhance one’s total fitness. Increase your understanding of “life skills” including: Stress Management, Anger Management, Transition Awareness, Healthy Relationships, Goal Setting, and your individual personality Pros & Cons. Learn how these can help you succeed in your career in the military. Take it from another fish out of the water, an Air Force Spouse, MCCS is here for you too! For upcoming class dates, please see page 28.

For details on local family readiness workshops and events, contact Marine Corps Family Team Building §253- 3542/3754/7090.

Fall in love with In Three Easy Steps by Mikie Watanabe, MCCS Cultural Adaptation Specialist

How do you feel about living in Japan? Do you feel scared or nervous to explore off-base? What is your fear? Could it be a language barrier? Cultural differences? You will never forget your tour in Iwakuni. But whether your memories are good or bad depends on the effort you make. Because I hope you enjoy your time here, I would like to suggest three things to try that can make your Iwakuni experience a good one:

1) Learn the Language (a Little Goes a Long Way!)

2) Be Adventurous,Try Japanese Food

When I visited Germany, I ordered food in English and although they understood me, it wasn’t a warm interaction. Next time, I tried to order in German, and they served me with a smile. Trying to use the native language demonstrates your interest in the local culture and that you’re making an effort to learn.

There are many kinds of Japanese foods you have probably never seen before. Japanese cuisine uses seasonings such as miso, soy sauce, and seaweed that can introduce you to great, new flavors. Most Japanese food is healthy, so don’t feel too guilty about eating a lot--you’re learning a new culture!

The first step is to learn some basic phrases, so you will be able to communicate Japanese people. When you are greeting, please don’t forget to smile. Use the word ”onegai shimasu” when asking for something. The simple phrase, which means “please,” goes a long way.

With a few Japanese phrases under your belt and a handy translation app on your phone, there’s nothing stopping you from experiencing all the delicious food outside the gate. If you’d like help getting started, Cultural Adaptation has restaurant and grocery store trips. Learn the basics of eating out in town and what is stocked at your local grocery store.

Ohayo | Good morning

3) Explore Off Base

Konnichiwa | Hello, Good afternoon Arigato (gozaimasu) | Thank you (very much) Gomennasai | I‘m sorry Sumimasen | Excuse me Kudasai | Please The Cultural Adaptation Program offers a four-day Survival Japanese Class every other month. The Library offers Transparent Language Online, a language learning resource, at no cost. Visit the Library, and you can start learning Japanese at your pace from your computer or mobile device.

Don’t hesitate to talk to locals, as they will try to understand what you are saying. Japanese people are welcoming and will try to show you hospitality, called omotenashi. On an airplane once, a lady seated next to me gave me onigiri (rice ball) to share with her during the flight. Even we Japanese are sometimes impressed with our own culture’s hospitality! Hop on a trip with IT&T or Cultural Adaptation. They provide guided, yearround opportunities to explore Japan and experience local culture. Want to venture out on your own? Information & Referral can help you find many things to do or see outside the gate. Cultural Adaption §253-6165 Information Tours & Travel §253-4377

Mentors are the key to the success of L.I.N.K.S. Whether you are a seasoned military spouse or brand new to the military lifestyle, you have something valuable to offer. Share your years of experience, a new perspective, or support for other spouses. That's what L.I.N.K.S. is all about—spouses helping spouses! Through the L.I.N.K.S. Mentorship Program, you will have the opportunity to share information and resources with our spouses by helping facilitate workshops. If public speaking isn’t your forte, you may assist with event decorations, baking and cooking, setup/tear-down, and much more.

“As a new military spouse, the L.I.N.K.S. Program has provided helpful information in navigating the military lifestyle as well as an opportunity to network with fellow spouses I may not have gotten the privilege to meet otherwise. The energy and optimism Ashley Morgan, MCF TB Trainer, brought to the L.I.N.K.S. for Spouses is what motivated me to join the L.I.N.K.S. Mentorship Program. Her infectious positive attitude is what L.I.N.K.S. is all about, spouses helping spouses.” – Becca Thalhammer

OCTOBER 21

MARINE CORPS BALL

6-9 PM, Club Iwakuni Ballroom Doors open: 5:45 PM Ceremony: 6:30 PM Open to children ages 5 enrolled in kindergarten thru 12. 400 tickets will be available at the Youth & Teen Center beginning September 26. §253-5549

by Tonya Van Winkle, Child Development Center Director As we enter into the Halloween season, parents often ask how they can know what is too scary for their child. We know that every child is different, so it can be difficult to give generalized rules about what may be scary for all children. The most important thing a parent can do is to watch for their child’s reactions to scary images and situations. Parents should pay attention to what their child is worried about, avoids, or talks about. It is often surprising to adults what some kids find scary. Thankfully, there are many things that parents can do to help lessen the scary. Parents can offer their child physical comfort through a hug or by holding their hand. Parents can talk with their kids about what they are afraid of. For those who like to think outside of the box, many children typically respond well to magical remedies and nightly rituals. Never underestimate a jar full of glitter or a spray bottle with “Monster-Be-Gone” mist in calming kids’ nerves.

Come in your favorite super hero costume and together we will soar through the course! Costume Contest for Best Villain, Best Superhero, & Best Family.

I encourage parents also to find fun opportunities for children of all ages to enjoy this season.

Free event open to all base personnel. SEMPER FIT §253-5126
