by Marlene Morin, SMP Administrative Assistant Come Celebrate SMP’s most anticipated event of the year, “The End of Summer Party,” on September 28. This is the day we block off the street behind the Hornet’s Nest “block party style” and stage the area with gaming competitions, a performance stage, and BBQ grills. This year, the party will have a Japanese and international theme. The theme came to fruition at one of the SMP Committee meetings. One of the SMP Officers brought up the idea of having an event that would celebrate the diverse cultures in the military. We thought the perfect venue would be the End of Summer Party. What type of fun can you expect at the party? There will be fun competitions for which you can start preparing now: the Sumo Competition, Humvee Pull, Tug of War, Dance Competition, and Karaoke. To add more excitement to the evening, we will once again have the famous “SNCO Dunk Tank.” Still unsure about how much fun these competitions might be? Well, you will just have to come on out and check it out for yourself, and see what all the talk is about.

P R E V I E W M A G A Z I N E | F I N D U S O N F A C E B O O K : M C C S I WA K U N I

First, second and third place winners will receive great prizes! The not-so-lucky competitors will still have a chance to win, as there will be many door prizes to be won throughout the event (there’s no cost to enter). So mark your calendars and celebrate the end of summer with us. But we almost forgot to mention the best part—this event is FREE and open to all single and unac c ompanie d s er vic ememb er s . Spread the word. The SMP is known for hosting many great events throughout the year, to include trips that give single and unaccompanied servicemembers the opportunity to explore Japan. The SMP also offers many volunteer opportunities throughout the year that are rewarding and provide an opportunity to give back to the community. Stop by the Hornet’s Nest or Marine Lounge to sign up, to enjoy all the trips, events, and volunteer opportunities that the SMP has to offer. For more information on these events contact us at §253-3585/5368.

SINGLE MARINE PROGRAM

The Single Marine Program (SMP) is open to single and unaccompanied servicemembers only. Authorized patrons of all abilities are welcomed. Please contact program staff if reasonable accommodations are necessary.

COMMUNITY ARTICLE

One of the best things about MCAS Iwakuni is its Skatepark, XtremeWorks. It’s a good feeling to go there and unwind from the daily stresses of work by just cruising the transitions or working on a new trick. My bag of tricks used to be pretty extensive, but with less free time and age catching up to me, it’s a more limited bag. But, from time to time, I dig deep and pull out a trick or two that I have not done in many years. Not the first try, but maybe after thoroughly analyzing and going over the trick in my head, I work it out and pull it off. The underlying philosophy of skateboarding first and foremost is have fun! Never give up, and always keep progressing, because there is always something new out there to try and learn. The thought of risking a fall on a useless wooden toy and barely sticking a trick has an adrenaline effect that you can never come back from. At the same time, though, you may get wrecked in the process. If you fall, get back up, dust yourself off, and try again. To skateboard is to be part of something that is ever-forming. If you’re afraid to fail, you’ll never try anything. If you never try, it will never happen.

COMMUNITY ARTICLE

the

HAP PIN ESS challenge by Cameron Mangels, Community Writer

"I truly believe that happiness is a choice. We can sit and do nothing, and nothing will happen. Alternatively, we can go out and do something fun, interesting, and mind-expanding."

I started working for MCCS in February 2016. Since I’ve been here, I've become more familiar with all the fun programs that MCCS has to offer — and there are a lot! Yet, I hadn’t actually tried any of them! I decided that I was going to make myself an experiment of sorts. I would try four classes that would allow me to be creative and learn something new.

Create Adventure! Outdoor Rec

Did you know that you can learn to sail, kayak, stand up paddleboard, snowboard, ski or surf through Outdoor Rec? They don’t just offer classes, but also no-cost rental equipment for outdoor sports, party supplies, and camping. I decided to try out the kayak safety class. The first hour was watching the safety videos and a short test to make sure we retained the important facts of the videos. Next, it was time to put this new knowledge to practice and head to the pool with the kayaks! First, we had to be able to step into the kayak without hurting ourselves. It was good that I had my helmet on. While I did not tumble into the

water, I came close to doing so a couple of times. I then started paddling, amazed at how quickly one could move down the pool with just the kayak and a paddle. The next step was to get into a smaller kayak and capsize on purpose. These were harder to get back into, but since we’d had our training, we each prevailed and got back on! In turn, we each dunked completely, pushed out from the capsized kayak, flipped it back upright, stabilized it with a float on the paddle, hopped back into the kayak and continued our training. Not only am I already signed up to learn how to stand up paddleboard, but I have hit the Inland Sea on a kayak rental. I feel a tremendous sense of accomplishment for learning a new sport and also a huge sense of joy when out on the water.

Create a Masterpiece! Wood Hobby Shop

While reading through past issues of Preview magazine, I read about woodworking classes where you could create things such as a pen, frame or picnic table. I always wanted to take “wood shop” in high school, but it was always filled. Now here was another chance! To get in this class, I had to complete a no-cost safet y class, which is held ever y Wednesday from 5 - 6 PM. The safety class, for me, was needed. I thought I knew some things about the tools in the Wood Hobby Shop, but I soon realized I knew ver y lit tle.

After the class, I am now confident that I can create something, and not cause physical harm to myself or innocent bystanders. I am now signed up for the next class learning how to make a wooden pen with the lathe, sander, and other machinery that I cannot pronounce yet. If I can take a class a month, I will be able to not only have cool things that I made with my hands; I will improve my woodworking skills to a point where I can get my plans going and build the Viking longship I always wanted.

Create Anything!

Library 3D Printer We have a 3D printer? At the Library? Yeah, I had to sign up for that class immediately! Maybe it is the nerd in me regarding newer technologies, or maybe it is the idea that I can print out something tangible that I created from my brain. Whatever the case, I had to learn how to use this 3D printer and make something—anything! The introduction was very easy. It consisted of a presentation about the 3D printer and safety. Our instructor also gave us information on where to look for the drawings that could be used to insert into the printer and how to create your own. As a demonstration, our instructor printed out a simple running man piece that originally was just a computer drawing, but was now an object that could be held in my hand! Along with the 3D printer, there were other toys in the room. One was a 3D scanner. With that, one could scan a piece, smooth it out in the computer, then use the 3D printer for a copy of the original piece. I was impressed! Orientation for the 3D printer is held at the Library every Friday from 6-6:45 PM.

Create Awareness!

Cultural Adaptation Recently, I learned how to make Japanese dishes like milk pudding, onion soup, and potato chicken during a Cultural Adaptation cooking class. I signed up mainly because I am interested in cooking, but I wanted to learn how to cook a Japanese dish. The hope is that one day when I’m visiting my hometown, I’ll be able to throw down some dishes and have everyone tell me how great they taste! The class was taught by a local restaurant owner, and her onion soup recipe was

the best, and the easiest to make. They had us cut the onions in a cross-section, (not completely splitting them) add ham, water, and spices, then using a microwave to great effect. In all, it took less than fifteen minutes to make this soup and it tasted (in my humble opinion) great! Along with cooking classes, Cultural Adaptation offers trips at a minimal or low fee with special attention to Japanese culture. They also have classes that will give great explanations of Japanese arts and ancient traditions. The tours and classes are open to all SOFA status personnel and their family members. Learning a new culture and going on a local adventure made me happy. Another check in the box!

MCCS has so

many possibilities! "Your happiness and adventure are in your hands."

You may not be able to take part in all of them during your stay here in Iwakuni. But why not take the happiness challenge yourself? If you find yourself with a free weekend, check out the MCCS Iwakuni website at www.mccsiwakuni.com, and you will find an extraordinary amount of possible adventures to take part in and enjoy with friends and family. New Kid on the Block by Michael Perez, Summer Teen Hire

It can be difficult being the new kid on the block. Especially if that block is in a whole new country, like Japan. Trust me; I know exactly how that feels because I was that kid last year.

diversity will open doors for you in the future. It will even help out with things like résumés and college applications. Programs like this are great places to make like-minded friends with similar interests.

The good news is you’re not the only new kid. It’s PCS season, which opens the doors for kids just like you to move to Japan! The beauty of being a part of the military is getting to meet hundreds of people in your lifetime. Also, you get the chance to say you’ve traveled to different places like Japan. “Iwakuni is a great place to meet new friends because it is a very welcoming community.” says a fellow one-year veteran to Iwakuni and upcoming high-school senior, Devon Shuman. “The transition after I got here was quite easy because the Youth and Teen Center helped me to get involved in activities quickly and when school started I made friends playing sports.”

Iwakuni is a great place to meet new friends because it is a very welcoming community.

Every Monday and Wednesday from 5:30-7 PM, the Teen Center offers the U-Turn program. This program gives students tools and resources for college preperation. Being versatile in situations and dealing with

Teenagers have opportunities to go out and explore Japan. But if you feel like staying on base, you could do things like: bowl at the Strike Zone, go to IronWorks Gym, or go to the Teen Center. You’ll surely bump into a few folks your age at one of these places. If you are looking for things to do off base, MCCS has you covered. Contact IT&T (Information, Tours, & Travel) for any upcoming events. You can contact them at 253-4377. They stay up to date on all things Japan!

Living in Japan is a once in a lifetime opportunity that most people will never get. Just have fun and make some friends!

COMMUNITY ARTICLE

The Center

of a teen's world

by Megan Strickland, Community Writer

Where do you think is the best place to hang out and have fun on base? In my personal opinion, the Youth & Teen Center is one of the greatest! The activities you can participate in at the Teen Center are endless. They range from volunteer work to exploring Japan and its culture. My personal favorites are the exciting trips, participating in Boys & Girls Club programs, and hanging out with friends. The Teen Center is a great place to hang out and relax. First and foremost let us talk about the trips. I have been on quite a few of these trips and I had an absolute blast. These “field trips” are always so much fun and have taught me a lot about Japan and its culture. Whether these trips are to Space World or to explore limestone caves, they are so entertaining. While on these trips I have made some of my closest friends. These trips give you an excuse to get off base and have fun with your friends.

Another reason I love the Teen Center is being able to participate in the Boys and Girls Club programs. The Boys and Girls Club gives its members the chance to participate in all sorts of different programs and clubs. The clubs include Smart Girls, Keystone Club and Torch Club. Being a teenage girl, I am a par t of the Smar t Girls club, which teaches girls how to overcome obstacles and become stronger because of the trials of life. I also belong to the Keystone Club, which teaches teens how to better themselves and their community. By being in the Keystone Club you have opportunities to go to different events all around America and other military bases. The last reason the Teen Center is great is because of the people. At the Youth & Teen Center you are constantly surrounded by your peers, so you have more of a chance to make new friends or spend more time

with the friends you already have. After school, my friends and I usually get on the computer and listen to music while doing homework. As a teenager, there are four things which I love more than anything: hanging out with my friends, listening to music, Wi-Fi, and sleep. Three of these things are achievable at the Youth & Teen Center (because of course, sleeping is frowned upon.) These were only a few of the many, many reasons I love the Iwakuni Youth & Teen Center. I hope you all stop by for a visit sometime, whether it is for the trips, the Boys and Girls Club, or just for the people. Even if all of this didn't convince you that the Youth & Teen Center is a great place, they always have free Wi-Fi!

Rice was introduced from China about 3000 years ago and is associated with pretty much any Japanese custom or celebration. We have the best climate for growing rice because of ample precipitation in June, and almost total lack of rain throughout the rest of the summer. Water levels must be diligently maintained during the 140 days from seeding in May, to harvesting in October. At a restaurant, a typical Japanese lunch meal is called teishoku, and has a main dish, gohan, and miso soup. At any convenience store, you’ll find many kinds of triangle-shaped rice balls called onigiri. We also eat rice topped with curry, fried rice, meat or tempura.

We drink rice too! Japanese sake is made from malted rice, and there are several breweries right here in Iwakuni. There is also a malted rice sake called amazake (with a very low or no alcohol content at all) that is served during the Hina doll festival. If there is a celebration in Japan, you can bet there will be sake!

Rice is found in Japanese snacks too. Senbei is a sweetened or salted Japanese rice cracker made from glutinous rice. They have been enjoyed in Japan since the 7th century.

Why Do the Japanese

Eat So Much Don’t forget about sushi! Although sushi is readily available these days, it is usually reserved for special days like birthdays, festivals and ceremonies.

Rice? by Mikie Watanabe, Cultural Adaptation Specialist

Since you have moved to Iwakuni, you might recognize that many Japanese people eat a lot of rice. Why? Rice, or “gohan,” is good for almost everything. It is also the center of many happy occasions. Next time you eat gohan, I hope you will have a new appreciation and eat up every grain!

Would you like to experience rice harvesting? The Cultural Adaptation Program is offering trips on October 8. Sign-ups start September 8 at the Library. Try this rare cultural experience and enjoy time with local people in the community.
