WHO WE ARE REBECCA MUSSETT
It’s an honor to be the MCCS Director aboard the fastest growing installation in the United States Marine Corps. The opportunities are seemingly endless, but there are also some unique challenges associated with serving a rapidly transforming air station. One of the biggest headwinds MCCS Iwakuni is encountering is the shortage of staff. This problem not only impacts the responsiveness and quality of our customer service but also challenges our ability to grow with an installation that will increase in population by over 35% in the next 18 months. As a result, MCCS is currently implementing some innovative incentive programs to attract and retain a high-quality workforce to serve you.
In the past several weeks, we have hosted a series of focus groups and conducted numerous surveys to solicit customer opinions of MCCS while also collecting your input on what services and activities are needed aboard the installation. I can say with confidence that your valuable feedback will lead to noticeable change and improvements to current MCCS offerings. In the next edition of the Preview Magazine, we will reveal to you the information we received and the exciting things in store for the community. Finally, I want to personally thank each one of you for your patronage and support of MCCS programs. The MCCS Iwakuni vision is to strive to exceed our customer’s expectations in everything we do. I understand that we don’t always achieve this worthy objective, but we will endeavor to get a little bit better at what we do each and every day.
POSITION: Fitness Coordinator, Health Promotion
John Kasperski
"I’m enthusiastic about fitness and active lifestyles. I look forward to challenging the MCAS iwakuni community to be better tomorrow than they are today.."

MCCS
IN-DEPTH
OUR MISSION is the sole reason we exist and the driver that compels us to do what we do every day for our MARINES, SAILORS, AND THEIR FAMILIES.
Can you offer better bikes in the bike selection? Located at Tori Pines Town Center is the MCX bike and sporting goods shop. We are continuously working with our primary vendors to fine tune the assortments. We currently have expanded Diamondback bicycles with new selections from their “premium line. MCX is continuing to pursue the availability of Cannondale and Trek bikes. We also offer bicycle repair; additionally, all your camping need are available at this location. We offer a Special Order program. Please stop by and see us.
Can you increase the selection of food at the Northside Marine Mart? Yes! MCCS is investing $5M in renovating and expanding the Northside Marine Mart in 2019. The store will double in size to 6,000 Sqft, feature a full-size food bar and significantly broaden the selection of groceries. This project is funded by MCCS and has been in the works for over two years. This is an example of how MCCS reinvests the money it generates back into our community. In July 2017 MCX has introduced several new lines of roller grill foods. In September, fresh burritos will also be available in MCX Mart locations for purchase. MCX has heard requests for other new items and is working diligently to expand our assortment. Currently, items such as Sushi and additional drinks are being worked on.
I would like more barber availability on Sunday and Monday. MCCS successfully negotiated new terms in the barber shop contract extending the hours of operation at both barber shops. Conditions included opening both barber shops an hour earlier on Saturdays and Sundays, and close one hour later Monday through Friday. Both barber shops are fully staffed on Saturday and Sunday and have approximately 90% of their personnel working on Mondays. Torii Pines Town Center opened with a barber shop offering ten chairs instead of the current six, and the North Side barber shop will be expanded to four seats instead of three in 2019.
Can MCCS add more Group Fitness Classes? MCCS is currently offering 16 classes per week at IronWorks Main Gym, which include Zumba, Kickboxing, Core Conditioning, Pound, Yoga, Power Pump, and several others. Also, MCCS is offering 15 classes per week at the IronWorks North facility. MCCS can provide these services based on the availability of certified and experienced group fitness professionals. Most of our instructors are active duty personnel or family members with demanding work and personal schedules, which limits their availability to conduct classes at certain times during the week. MCCS will continue to encourage instructors to fill extra slots and will continue to recruit more instructors. As the population continues to grow here on the air station, the community could potentially benefit from an increase in group fitness instructors who possess advanced and basic group fitness certifications from organizations approved by the Marine Corps. This will, of course, provide MCCS with the opportunity to expand the class schedule and offer more classes during the week. M C C S I WA K U N I . C O M |

Japan Bucket List:
The Single Marine Program takes you to all of Japan’s most iconic locations
BY OANA IVANOFF, MARINE LOUNGE MANAGER So you just got stationed overseas. It can be overwhelming! Don’t fear, however. Japan is a great place to live and offers so many unique opportunities. It’s impossible to see everything in the 2-3 years you’re stationed here. The SMP offers numerous must-see trips for single and unaccompanied service members at MCAS Iwakuni. They say if you visit Japan you must climb Mt. Fuji - ”Fuji San” - otherwise, you are destined to return to Japan. Fuji-San is the highest mountain in Japan at 3,776 m. (12,388 ft.) high; about 200,000 people climb Mt. Fuji every year. Also, it would be a shame to visit Tokyo and not take a walk across the famous intersection outside Shibuya Station. Kyoto, once the capital of Japan, is famous for its numerous classical Buddhist temples, as well as gardens and imperial palaces. If you want to see a golden temple, then Kyoto is the place to visit! The Golden Pavilion is the most popular tourist attraction in Japan and Kyoto. Don’t forget to stop by Fushimi Inari-Taisha which is a path with hundreds of bright-orange “torii” gates in the forest. Last but not least is Arashiyama, a site with monkeys and a bamboo forest. A fun place to visit is Ōkunoshima Island in the city of Takehara. Ōkunoshima Island is called Usagi Shima, or Rabbit Island because of the numerous feral rabbits that roam the island.
Thermal Pool, Beppu
Golden Temple, Kyoto
What about a place that is bizarre? Yes, Japan has that too. Beppu City has The 8 Hells of Beppu, which are dramatic landscapes of thermal pools. It’s a must-see place! Do you want to ride a camel? Then make sure to visit Tottori Sand Dunes, the largest sand dunes in Japan and Tottori’s most famous tourist attraction. Located just outside the city center, they span roughly 16 kilometers of coast along the Sea of Japan and are up to two kilometers wide and 50 meters high. You can sandboard, parasail, or simply visit the sand museum. Those are just a few places that SMP recommends, and all you have to do is stop by and sign up for our next trips. SMP will take you there. We also offer many great opportunities to connect with the local community through clean-up and volunteer events interacting with Japanese children and the elderly. There is a saying that when you’re stationed in Japan, there is no way you will leave without making a lifelong friend. While stationed in Iwakuni get involved with your community, make lasting friendships, and make a difference. Stop by the Marine Lounge for all volunteer opportunities, or visit either SMP locations for any trips around Japan. Make this tour your most memorable one!

BY APRIL MILLER, SUPERVISORY LIBRARIAN
Travel
Reading Through
One doesn't need to hop on a plane, rent a car , or buy a train ticket to travel. T he Station Library offers opportunities to see the world through reading books, graphic novels, magazines, electronic resources, and much more. There is no frigate like a book, to take us lands away. – Emily Dickinson
8
Visit the library to explore different countries and cultures, all without packing a bag or spending a dime. You can adventure through foreign lands by checking out travelogues or biographies, learn to cook an Indian curry dish or bake a perfect croissant through some of our
cookbooks, or teach yourself to speak Portuguese (and many other languages) with some of our language resources. Help solve a mystery in Tokyo, beat the heat with an Arctic thriller, or spend time with a family homesteading on a remote Pacific island.
Our minds travel when our bodies are forced to stay at home. – Ralph Waldo Emerson
Ready to get off the planet entirely? Check out some science fiction or books on astronomy or space travel. Voyage to Mars and back, around the sun, and beyond. When the imagination is engaged, the sky is not the limit. Tired of modern day life? Come to the library to time travel to Victorian London or explore the tombs of Ancient Egypt.
P R E V I E W M A G A Z I N E | F I N D U S O N F A C E B O O K : M C C S I WA K U N I
Reading can also bring us closer to home while we are stationed far away. Borrow an old favorite that brings back memories, read about what’s going on with the economy in the States, or check out a book that’s entirely about how to grill the perfect burger at a cookout.
Some books are so familiar that reading them is like being home again. – Louisa May Alcott
Children and young adults can travel and adventure through the library as well. Whether you want to share a summer with kids your age in Australia, float around in a space station, or learn about the animals of Africa, we have the books for you!
If you are short on time or just want to get away through an avenue other than reading, the library also maintains an
extensive collection of movies, documentaries, audiobooks, and music. Allow your mind to venture to other places by listening to a Caribbean beat during your daily commute or engross yourself in a tale of Cold War espionage and intrigue while working out.
Once you’ve explored the resources available for you at the Station Library, you can sail the high seas, trek the desert, climb a mountain, or visit home, all without leaving your chair.

Road Trip Ready BY KENNETH SNOOK, TRANSPORTATION SUPERVISOR AT FACILITIES MAINTENANCE
I
f you’re the type of person who likes spontaneous and adventurous trips on the road, then you’re not alone! I’m here to pass on some tips on the roads in Japan and ways to have your vehicle road-trip ready. Let’s start with the vehicle.
First, always make sure your vehicle has the correct levels of oil and coolant, your tires still have tread and air pressure, and all the lights work. Inside the vehicle, make sure there is a jack, a spare tire, a road flare, and a list of emergency phone numbers and contact information for Japan’s roadside assistance. This should all be provided by your secondary insurance company. If any warning lights on the dash are turned on or if you’d like to get a tune-up before the trip, MCCS Typhoon Motors is available to provide the service. Now, as we all know, the biggest difference between driving stateside and in Japan is that you will drive on the left side of the road. This means that the driver seat is on the right side of the car, and the turn signals and windshield wiper controls on the steering column are flip-flopped. Unfortunately, in Japan, you cannot automatically turn left at a red light, but at some intersections, red lights may have green arrows underneath indicating you may advance in that direction.
Flashing your hazard lights can be a warning to other drivers, and it also means “thank you.”
Japan has plenty of indoor and outdoor parking garages marked with the letter “P”. If you look right outside the bustling city areas, you can find parking sections with hourly rates or overnight rates (normally 8 PM to 8 AM) that’s less expensive. Some range from ¥500 to ¥1,000 for the night. Parking spots are more narrow so be careful when opening doors. It is very common for drivers in Japan to park their cars in reverse, so please be courteous when they begin the parking dance of swinging out and then backing up into the parking space. Before I begin the dance, I like to turn my hazard lights on to warn other drivers and to say “ah - thank you!”
Now, learning to read another language is pretty difficult, but luckily, Japan has certain signs color-coded. Expressway entrance and exit gates have three different color markings: the cash toll line is marked with a green sign, the ETC toll line (similar to the E-Z Pass in America) is marked in purple, and the line that accepts both is marked with both colors. If you enter into the wrong one, no worries, an attendant will come out to help. At gas stations, if the gas pump handle is red, it’s for regular gas, if yellow, it’s for high octane gas, and if green it’s for diesel. They will either have self-serve or full-service stations, and if you encounter a self-serve, there is usually an attendant inside the gas station that can help guide you through the process. If no attendant, then do what I do: guess, push buttons, insert a credit card, and wait to hear the gas pump turn on!
For example, when someone pulls over to let you pass on a small road or lets you into a busy road, you can flash your light to say “ah - thank you!” Safe travels everyone, and if you need a quick rest, a lot of convenience stores and expressway rest areas have free parking and restrooms inside. Power naps save lives.

IN
“ ON E ’ S DESTIN ATION IS N EVER A PLACE, BUT A N EW W AY OF SEEING THINGS. ” -H EN RY MILLER Living in Japan has been the best opportunity I will ever experience. When those first orders were cut to bring us to Japan, I had no clue what I was in for. I can say that I’m a better person for living here. The culture is so rich, and the sites are the most incredible visions for any level of wanderlust. Sometimes Iwakuni can feel like you’re stuck in the middle of nowhere, but it serves as a great central location for many fantasy destinations. Just beyond those gates is a fascinating world for you to explore. During your tour, make sure you check out these great locations and create memories you’ll have for a lifetime.
Hiroshima
TRAVEL TIME: 1 HR (42 KM)
Hiroshima Castle Just a few blocks away from Peace Memorial Park, add this stop to your itinerary. The castle is surrounded by a moat, and the top floor offers a great view of the city.
Peace Memorial Park Home to the infamous Genbaku Dome, the ruins from the atomic bombing serve as a sobering reminder of WWII. The park is a symbol of peace and friendship with an eternal flame and thousands of origami cranes. While you’re in the park, stop by the museum. While it’s a very sombre display, it’s an important part of history, and there are reminders everywhere of how far we’ve come in developing a relationship with the nation of Japan.
Hiroshima Castle Photo: Kristi Andersonn
Hondori Street This is a bustling street full of food and shopping! During Christmas, it helps to get in the spirit with the decorations and favorite holiday coffee drinks. Just outside the shopping area are the Dreamation displays of over 1.4 million light bulbs.
Yanai
TRAVEL TIME: 1 HR (31 KM)
The small town of Yanai is full of old world culture. Spending the afternoon there will make you nostalgic for simpler times with its cobblestone path and white-walled buildings.
Miyajima TRAVEL TIME: 1.5 HRS (26 KM)
Miyajima is such a magical little island. Right off the ferry you’ll be greeted by hundreds of deer who roam the island. They’re such a normal part of life here, that they’ll approach you and let you touch them. Beware though, they’re quite brazen when asking for snacks! Make sure you eat momijimanju (maple leaf cakes) while you’re there. They’re a specialty of the island!
Aquarium This aquarium is fun for an afternoon with (or without) the kids! The highlight is when they bring out the penguins to walk up and down the hall with the visitors.
Itsukushima (Floating) Shrine Another “Wonder of Japan,” This massive Shinto shrine is built over the water. When the tide is high, it appears to be floating.
The Great Torii This torii is part of Itsukushima Shrine. It’s different from most toriis by its location in the water, making it appear as if it’s floating. Little toriis in the water support the main one, making it able to withstand all weather. Make sure you see it at sunset. It’s an incredible site!
Mt. Misen This mountain is a great hike, especially if you are preparing to conquer Fuji-san. Atop the mountain, you’ll see Buddhist temples and Kiezu-no-hi (eternal flame), a holy flame that’s been burning for 1,200 years. During your climb take notice of all the balancing rocks that past climbers have left.

Tsuwano TRAVEL TIME: 2 HRS (83 KM)
Tsuwano is known as “Little Kyoto.” It’s a small, quaint town that’s rich in Japanese culture, it’s worth taking a trip, or twelve.
Yabusame Horseback Archery Festival This is held in April during peak sakura (cherry blossom) season. The drive is an easy one to take, or you can join an IT&T trip.
Taikodani Inari Shrine This shrine mimics the famous Fushimi Inari shrine in Kyoto with its own 1,000 torii gate trail. The shrine is located at the top of a mountain, offering an incredible view of the town of Tsuwano.
Tsuwano Catholic Church This beautiful cathedral is a great place to see where East-meets-West so perfectly.
Himeji TRAVEL TIME: 3.5 HRS (284 KM)
Himeji Castle Also known as the “White Heron Castle,” this beautiful castle has had no damage done to it, so it offers an authentic experience to see into Japanese Imperial life.
Mount Shosha Engyoji This temple is where The Last Samurai was filmed. A little bit of a hike up, you get to check out this beautiful, peaceful temple. Plus, you get to sit where Tom Cruise has been!
Himeji Castle Photo: Zaneta Padilla
Kyoto
Kyoto - Photo: Zaneta Padilla
TRAVEL TIME: 5 HRS (400 KM)
This former capital of Japan has so many amazing sites to see. Over a thousand years old, this city has the perfect mixture of old and new, making it such an eclectic city to visit.
Golden Pavilion This Buddhist temple features a pavilion that’s completely covered in gold-leaf. Visiting these grounds makes for a completely peaceful event with a nice walk around the gardens with food booths and burning incense.
Fushimi Inari One of Kyoto’s top attractions, this shrine has a thousand torii gates leading to the top of the mountain. Along the red-line path, there are little altars throughout the trail that offers great photo-ops and peaceful breaks.
Gion District This merchant area of Kyoto is where your chances are greatest for seeing geisha, an ancient and increasingly rare artform of entertainers. The best time to sight these beautiful women is to park yourself in the district between 5 and 6 PM and have your camera ready. The architecture of this street will give you a glimpse of what life in Japan was like 300 years ago (but add some cars).
Osaka
Golden Pavillion, Kyoto - Photo: Zaneta Padilla
TRAVEL TIME: 4.5 HRS (373 KM)
Dontonbori Street This street is just brimming with energy at night. This is every foodie’s dream location as it offers hundreds of unique food finds and shopping.
Osaka Castle Green-tiled and white-walled, this is one of the most beautiful castles to visit. During cherry blossom season, the 600 sakura trees surround the gardens of the castle.
Kaiyukan Aquarium One of the largest aquariums, Kaiyukan offers over 30,000 creatures on display in an aquarium built around a cylindrical tank, giving visitors the feeling of being underwater themselves. Located in the same area as Universal Studios, this offers a fun day for the family in one location.
