Maximize Your Savings During

MILITARY SAVES WEEK

AND BEYOND

by Marie Lewis, Education & Career Program Manager/Command Financial Specialist What is your biggest fear?

If you answered something related to your finances, you are like most Americans. In a recent national survey,* two out of three respondents ranked money problems as their number one fear—even more than dying. You can conquer this fear by taking control of your finances, and there’s no better time to get started than Military Saves Week!

Whether you are in debt or

already have substantial savings, we could all benefit from extra cash for life’s emergencies. You can't predict when bad things will happen, but you can be prepared financially. (Murphy’s Law, anyone?) For starters, take an

honest look at your savings account. Is yours a little lean these days? If you have less than three to six months of living expenses set aside in an easily accessible, liquid account, ask yourself if you could transfer just $50 per paycheck into that account. If you take the time to evaluate your spending habits, chances are you can find even more money to save.

Still not seeing any extra

dollars you can set aside? Well, have you ever tried keeping track of all your expenses for just one month? You might be shocked to see exactly where your money is going. If you charge most of your purchases to a credit or debit card, your expense record is just a few clicks away in your online statement. Our Personal

Financial Management Specialist can walk you through this process if you are feeling overwhelmed. We can help you develop a spending and saving plan customized to fit your lifestyle.

Once you have adequate

savings, the next step is learning how to make that money grow. Paying down debt is crucial because it frees up your money to invest. That’s where your money can start to work for you. The earlier you start, the better. The number one financial regret of retirees is that they didn’t start saving sooner. The longer you put it off, the more you’ll have to save to catch up.

by Adeline Mayer & Allyson Wright, Community Writers

Sponsors should take time and ask themselves, their friends and family, what information they wanted to know before coming to Iwakuni or what would have been useful information to have. Some sponsors will do more than others, but at minimum, they should provide accurate information, be patient with incoming families, and provide direction. Entering an experience with a positive attitude will help to bring a positive "Remem ber when you outcome.

What were your first thoughts when you found out you were moving overseas for the first time? What were your thoughts when you found out you were moving to Japan? Tackling an overseas move can be stressful and time-consuming, especially if you do not know what you are doing. Having someone to answer your questions can make your PCS experience a smooth one. When assigned a sponsor, we look for support and answers to our questions: “How is the gym?” “How big is my barracks room?” “Can my pets come?” ”What size furniture can I bring?” Remember when you finally arrived in Iwakuni and you didn’t know where anything was? Now it’s your chance to help someone new to Iwakuni by being an outstanding sponsor. Chances are, you will be a sponsor while stationed in Iwakuni and you will get the chance to create the first positive memory in a newcomer’s tour of duty.

finally arrived in Iwakuni a n d yo u d i d n ’t know where a nythi ng was? Now it’s your chance to help someone new to Iwakuni by being an outstanding sponsor."

The Sponsorship Program is a command sponsored program to help new civilians, new service members and their families in Iwakuni. The sponsor is responsible to prepare for the arrival of the new resident and to show them and their family around as well as their new workplace. No need to be an expert in relocation. The training will teach you how to become dependable and how to connect the new arrival to the experts.

As a sponsor, you are the key to a servicemember’s successful move. We will walk you through your sponsorship duties, and help you find the resources and information your newcomer is going to need. We will outline your responsibilities, and provide what you need to be an effective sponsor.

This class provides the most up-to-date information and station resources, so you can be confident in what you are passing along. We also will provide you with: a sponsor checklist; newcomer needs assessment; and customizable correspondence templates to make your job personable. Being a sponsor also means that you are a direct representative of your unit and installation. This training will give you the confidence to sponsor a newcomer. You will have the latest information and resources.

Information Referral and Relocation facilitates this class and will provide the tools to be a successful sponsor to make newcomers as comfortable as possible during their transition.

Here's how to be an A+ Sponsor: * Contact Personal & Professional Development and enroll your incoming servicemember or civilian in the Welcome Aboard class.

STRONG MILITARY

Relationships by Angela Gerrits, MA, MHR; MCFTB Trainer

Happy Valentine's Day, Iwakuni! This time of year, those of us in relationships are often focused on dates and chocolates. But let’s face it, it’s not all chocolates and flowers in our day-to-day life. Even the best relationships can be stressful at times, and the military lifestyle often piles on extra stressors. There are the moves to places unknown full of strangers and possibly a new language or culture, the military’s culture itself, and the possibility of a long-term separation at a moment’s notice. These unique challenges can create some of the strongest relationships, if we can successfully navigate the ups and downs together. I recently spoke with some Iwakuni couples to see how they make lemonade out of the lemons that life, and the military, has given them.

How did you meet? “We met in high school where Adeline was a foreign exchange student. I tried to talk to her but [I was told she only spoke French]. Knowing what it meant, I wrote down ‘belle’ on a corner piece of paper and asked her for the translation. When she replied with ‘it means beautiful,’ I slid the paper toward her and told her ‘it must be for you.’” - Taylor & Adeline “I laid eyes on my beautiful wife at a restaurant... every time I looked into her eyes my heart skipped a beat. I first saw her when I was on a[nother] date. I know what you’re thinking: ‘how can he be on a date and be star struck by another girl?’ That is easy—it was love at first sight.” - Matthew & Jeanne “We met on a blind date on July 4th, 1998!” - Angie & James “My cousin was my husband’s coworker, so she [set us up].” - Akane & Brandon “We met in Pensacola, FL during our A School training. I was walking up to my floor and I saw him running out. He had the cutest smile ever.” - Jessica & Eduardo

Do you still feel the same way you felt for your partner at the beginning of the relationship? “I definitely love my husband more than I did at the beginning of our relationship. He is ridiculously sweet, thoughtful, and an amazing dad to our two year old daughter. I find something about him every day that I find fascinating.” - Jeanne & Matthew “Yes, but it doesn’t mean we haven’t faced challenges along the way.” - Angie & James “Of course not! I have become closer to her and I feel we now—more than ever—look to each other for strength, support, and happiness. We have truly become stronger with time.” - Brandon & Akane

What was the best moment in your relationship so far? “I would have to say once our wedding was over. It was an amazing feeling that Akane's family was accepting of me and allowing me to become part of their family.” - Brandon & Akane

“There are so many moments to choose from like our numerous travelings back and forth between Europe and the USA. Her graduating college and me graduating boot camp. But the most memorable memory has to be our wedding. It was in Texas and Adeline’s family and friends flew in for the celebration. It was the first time both our families were united.” - Taylor & Adeline “Marrying my best friend and the birth our two beautiful boys. I love being a wife and mother.” - Angie & James

The military can throw us all curveballs. What was one you have dealt with and how did you get through it? “While on the first month after marriage we applied for Adeline’s green card. That same month I was notified of my unaccompanied orders to Iwakuni, Japan which I had to report two month[s] later. ... We had to expedite Adeline’s green card process and medical exams for overseas screening, hoping it was enough time for us not to be separated again.” - Taylor & Adeline “I was home on maternity leave with our first child and I received a call from my husband asking how I felt about him deploying to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for six months. Our son was three and a half weeks old at the time and he would be leaving the next week. For my first big curveball, I had great support from local friends and family that helped me. I couldn’t have done it without their support. There is no shame in asking for help.” - Angie & James

“I think the biggest curveball we have gotten was getting stationed in the same unit. We are both in the same MOS, so working side-byside can raise some eyebrows. In this situation it is kind of out of our hands, so we just remain flexible and make the best of where we are sent.” - Eduardo & Jessica “[My] wife's parents accepting me and have a good relationship with them.” - Adaryl & Sayaka “Stress that involved leaving the military and us cooperating with each other. We got through it by working together and understanding each other’s needs. - Adaryl & Sayaka

Skype, Facebook messenger, or old school letters: which way do you like to communicate when separated? “Skype is great! We have been together long enough (yes, we are old) that when we were dating we communicated via instant messenger. I love how technology has grown and changed how we communicate. It is wonderful that families can Skype and be able to see each other. That truly helps bridge the gap.” - Angie & James “We tend to not talk as much but always make sure we do a good night phone call for our daughter to hear his voice.” - Jeanne & Matthew

What advice would you give other military couples? “The best advice would be communication (if not, your wife would be mad).” - Matthew & Jeanne “Even after…becoming Mr and Mrs or after becoming mum and dad, keep on dating. You were once boyfriend and girlfriend and that should never change no matter the distance, the challenges, and the time.” - Taylor & Adeline “Communication is key! You need to be able to talk to each other and express your needs, wants, and concerns. This lifestyle already adds enough stress but figuring out how you both communicate is vital. You both also need a great support system around you when you are a part. With this said, it doesn’t mean we have always communicated well, but over time you get better with it.” - Angie & James

“Be supportive of each other and understand that the military life can be demanding at times and forgiving at others… be flexible, supportive and understanding. Have fun with where you're at and enjoy what your current location has to offer. Reach out to other families in the military community[for support].” - Brandon & Akane “International marriage has its ups and downs and can be very challenging due to language and cultural barriers. Because of that, my husband and I have faced many disagreements that American couples may not have. However, once we learned to listen and understand each other I think we became closer as a couple and respect each other instead of stating opinions and thoughts only through the lense of Japanese or American.” - Sayaka & Adaryl “The best advice I could give is to be patient with one another and be understanding with the curveballs that the military throws at us. There are plenty of resources that are here to help us out, whether it be marriage counseling or love language seminars that actually help the relationship out.” - Eduardo & Jessica

by Susanne Koch, MCCS Fitness & Health Promotion Director

Love is in the air! This month, while you celebrate all the things you like, considering doing what you love every day, and get paid for it.

group exercise, personal training, massage therapy, or dance can call 253-6359. Be part of our Health Promotion team and you too can love what you do!

Maintaining health and vitality have become a priority for many Americans. Moreover, many of us are passionate about helping others become their “best.”

“I love the support that I feel from MCCS staff in Health Promotions and the flexibility to bring new ideas to Iwakuni. I feel heard and cared for being a part of this team. I find that the depth of knowledge with the instructors is immense and we all have different strengths.

Semper Fit offers several wellness programs and services for the entire family. The Health Promotion Dance & Gymnastics program conducts classes for ages 2 - 17 years of age. Little ones ages 2-3 can attend a Parent & Tot tumbling or dance class. Preschoolers have options in gymnastics, creative movement, and ballet/tap combination classes. Our new boys’ gymnastics program instructors, Jacques Bouchard and Jonathon Boland, have collegiate level competition and teaching experience. We also have classes in ballet, contemporary, jazz, hiphop, intermediate, and advanced ballet. However, we can’t consistently offer such a diverse program without instructors. We strive to provide the same level of instruction available at CONUS duty stations. Although we currently do not have elite level gymnastics instruc tion, we are continuing to recruit excellent instructors and expand our services. MCCS needs you to help continue to provide these programs and much more to our MCAS Iwakuni community. Our fitness and health promotion services positions are recruited through personal services contracts, and we have several openings. Contracting of fers flexibility and the opportunity to be your “own boss.” MCAS Iwakuni is a wonder ful location to consider starting your own business and honing your skills. Individuals who possess training and certifications such as:

I absolutely LOVE encouraging people to focus on being mindful and inspiring people to be intentional with their training. I love creating that community and giving people a space to try something new in a group setting while allowing people to train in a judgment free zone. If I am able to provide an experience for someone that allows them the freedom to accept where they are while pushing them to a better tomorrow, then I am at peace.” - Kim Espinoza, B.S.
