Red Dress Day is held the first Friday of every February as the official kick-off to American Heart Month, a national observance that raises awareness of heart disease. Heart disease is the number one killer of Americans, and comes in many forms, from high blood pressure, stroke, peripheral artery disease, coronary artery disease and more. Chances are that you know someone affected by heart disease. Red Dress Day specifically targets awareness for women, as heart disease generally affects more women than men. Semper Fit Health Promotion hosted the Red Dress Event to educate individuals on the many forms of heart disease and that in many cases, it is preventable. Along with the 5K run, participants competed in a potato sack and tugo-war event. The race the race culminated with a chocolate buffet complete with hot chocolate and a chocolate fountain.

JCI LOANER VEHICLES Loaners are for JCI patrons and are limited to local usage within 50KM of base. Vehicles available on a first-come, first-served basis.

EARLY DROP OFF PLAN Customers using the Early Drop Off Plan may return rental cars at any time prior to the date and time the vehicle is due back.

Additional fees will be applied to vehicles without a full tank of gas.

There is no early drop-off for vehicles involved in accidents.

This is when all vehicle owners must pay their respective vehicles taxes. While this point is important, it is imperative that you know your vehicle must be registered to this base and prefecture or adjacent prefecture by April 1, 2017. This simply means that if you were previously registered in Okinawa and you transferred to MCAS Iwakuni with a vehicle and never registered at Pass and Registration building 608, prior to April 1, 2017 you will be responsible for paying your taxes in Okinawa or another bases prefecture.

Signs will be posted at key locations throughout the base to remind you to pay your road tax. Prices may differ slightly from previous year but shouldn’t vary much from last year’s payment. If you are unsure

of the previous amount paid please look at the documents used for vehicle registration, you should have the following: Title, Japanese Compulsory Insurance, Recycling Fee receipt (motorcycles will not have one), secondary car insurance and the Road Tax receipt which is usually a little white piece of paper about the size of a credit card that states “Automobile Tax Stamp” across the middle. These are the primary documents you will need when you go to Pass and Registration to validate payment and registration, along with the vehicle being registered.

Distracted Driving: Myths & Facts

Distracted driving occurs any time you take your eyes off the road, hands off the wheel, and mind off your primary task--driving safely.

MYTH: A hands-free device eliminates the dangers of cell phone use while driving.

FACT: Hands-free devices offer no safety benefits because they do not eliminate cognitive

distraction. The brain cannot process two cognitively complex tasks at once and, as it switches from a cell phone conversation to driving and back again, the brain becomes so overloaded that drivers can miss seeing up to 50% of their driving environment.

MYTH: If a driver’s eyes are on the road at all times then he/she is safe.

FACT: Drivers may be looking at their driving environment while they are talking on a cell phone

device. The problem is that the driver looks but does not “see.” Distracted drivers experience what researchers call inattention blindness – similar to tunnel vision. Drivers look out the window, but their brains do not process everything necessary to safely monitor their surroundings. It is because a driver talking on a cell phone is focused first on the cell phone conversation; the brain prioritizes the cognitive task of driving second.

MYTH:

Even if hands-free devices are dangerous, talking on a cell phone still is not the worst thing drivers can do behind the wheel.

FACT:

There are other activities that are more dangerous for drivers such as turning around to reach for an object in the back seat or rummaging through a purse. However, these distractions typically last just a few seconds because drivers realize the risk and the actions are short lived. Cell phone conversations often are longer because drivers do not realize they are cognitively distracted. The longer a call, the longer the exposure to risk. That is why cell phone use causes more crashes than more dangerous activities – because of the number of people engaged in the behavior at any given time.

MYTH: If cell phone use while driving is cognitively distracting, then drivers also should not talk to other passengers.

FACT:

Some passenger conversations can be distracting to drivers such as intense conversations or arguments. But adult passengers often actively help drivers by monitoring and discussing traffic, and they tend to suppress conversation when the driving environment becomes demanding. Passengers can see the roadway; callers cannot.

At 45 miles per hour, a driver glancing away for two seconds is driving blind for a distance of 132 feet—almost half the length of a football field. As a result, the driver’s reaction time is shortened dramatically. Looking away from the road, reaching to pick up something from the floor, or letting your attention focus on anything other than driving can have immediate, deadly consequences. Stay focused. Plan ahead. Be aware of your surroundings. Avoid the temptation to “get lost” in conversations, talk radio programs or respond to aggressive drivers.

Allergies With Yogurt !

Spring has arrived and soon cherry blossoms, or sakura, will begin to bloom. Unfortunately with the arrival of spring also comes the start of allergy season.

Many people with allergies experience symptoms such as itchy eyes, runny noses, and sneezing. The most common causes of these symptoms in Japan seem to be from the pollen of sugi (Japanese cedar) and hinoki (Cypress tree) as well as a particular micro chemical particle found in the air called PM 2.5. Unfortunately this means that you may be combating your allergies during ohanami (sakura viewing).

How do you prevent these allergy symptoms? The most important thing is not to breathe in any pollen. You may see many people in Japan wearing a mask, that’s because they know how awful the effects of allergy symptoms are once they appear, so they prepare themselves. Nonetheless, people still suffer from allergies. Why? The pollen in the air can stick onto your hair, clothes, shoes and other items. When we come home from outside, we are sure to bring pollen inside our houses with us. To avoid this, make sure to clear and brush away any dust or pollen on your hair and clothes before you come in the house. You can also get electronic air cleaners to help remove pollen from the rooms in your house.

If we can resist allergies, we won't have to worry about them, and the way to do this is by boosting your immune system. One way to boost your immune system is by eating yogurt. People have had the idea that "yogurt is a healthy food" from old days. This is because yogurt includes a lactic acid bacterium which increases good bacteria and exterminates bad bacteria. Lately, studies have said yogurt is effective against allergies because it improves the internal environment of your body which makes you stronger against pollen-based allergies. Yogurt has been an attractive remedy for allergies because it is an important factor in improving the intestinal flora of your body.

Why don't you learn more about yogurt? The Cultural Adaptation Program will take you to a Yogurt Factory in Hiroshima on April 21. Sign-ups begin March 21 at the Library. This factory was the first to sell Yogurt in Japan starting in 1917. They will give samples of their products, so you can try them all and see which yogurt flavor you like.

March is National Nutrition Month and with so many fad diets on the market and misinformation, healthy eating can be a difficult struggle.

Clever marketers constantly bombard us with the next “holy grail” to weight loss or muscle gain, feeding on our own personal insecurities about the way we perceive ourselves. Then add that a misguided study can be released and we are all eating “low-fat, high carbohydrate” or cutting out things like eggs from our diets. Finally, top that off with claims that anyone can now be a distributor for popular nutritional supplement brands, and you have perhaps one of the most confusing areas of science ever. The tough thing about all this is that we all have to eat to survive!

Building a Better Plate “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food.”

A healthy diet is one that is sustainable and utilizes all food groups. Sustainability includes foods that are natural, locally grown, and avoid wasting natural resources or damaging the climate. Another aspect of sustainability is that an individual can eat this way throughout their lifespan. This is a good determinant of the quality of one’s diet…can you eat this throughout your life and maintain the highest quality of health?

Start with Color!

When it comes to half your plate, the more color the better. Half your plate should be vegetables and fruits, when an emphasis on vegetables.

Fruits and vegetables are generally nutrient-dense and low in calories (avoid heavy sauces and dressings which add unnecessary calories) making them the best carbohydrate choice when you are trying to cut out a few extra calories. Stay clear of white potatoes and french fries, but certainly enjoy a sweet potato or yam.

Fruits and vegetables are loaded with antioxidants and other phytonutrients that help neutralize damage from free radicals and help fight disease in the body. There are roughly 25,000 phytonutrients in plants which are manifested in the color of food.

For example, beta-carotene is converted to Vitamin A, which helps maintain eye health - yes, mom was right when she said, “carrots make your eyes sparkle!” Aim for five or more servings of vegetables and fruits each day.

The Less Legs the Better!

When it comes to protein, selecting lean cuts of meat is preferred. About one-quarter of your plate should be focused on protein. Choose items such as fish and poultry over beef and pork. Because of the abundance of Omega fatty acids found it cold water fish (such as salmon, sardines, halibut, mackerel), it is recommended that you consume 2-3 servings of fish each week. When choosing pork or beef, go for the loin cuts, which tend to be the leanest. Dairy products and eggs are also good sources of protein.

If you prefer a more plant-based protein, beans and legumes, nuts and seeds, tofu, tempeh, quinoa, and green leafy vegetables are your best bet.

Keep it Brown & Close to the Ground!

Round off your plate with a whole grain. Like fruits and vegetables, whole grains are loaded with fiber.

Fiber not only helps the digestive system keep you regular, but it allows for better absorption of phytonutrients from food. Fiber reduces cholesterol, the risk for heart disease, and helps maintain a healthier weight.

Grains such as brown rice, whole wheat products, oatmeal, quinoa, millet, barley (excludes pearl), amaranth, rye, buckwheat, and others pack an abundance of energy that help maintain blood sugar levels. Think eating a few donuts for breakfast versus a bowl of cooked oatmeal…oh the sugar crash!

Don’t Cut the (Healthy) Fat!

Fat is essential to the body for nervous system function, hormone production, transport of Vitamins A, D, E, & K, energy production, and the formation of healthy cells and tissues. Fat has gotten a bad rap over the years, but it’s important to understand that our bodies require fat for good health. Fat doesn’t make you fat…too many calories do!

Foods containing polyunsaturated fats, (omega fatty acids) such as cold water fish, contain important omega-3 fatty acids, while plant-based fats, such as healthy oils (olive, grapeseed, sunflower) contain omega-6 fatty acids. Other foods containing healthy fats include avocados, walnuts and almonds, chia and flax seeds, and eggs. Some new research is showing that dairy products have healthy fat properties too.

Avoid saturated fats (solid at room temperature like animal fat) and trans-fatty acids (synthetic fats that extend shelf life) found in cookies, crackers, pastry mixes, baked goods, fried foods and just about everything that has a shelf life!

Be sure to get in all three macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins and fats) every three hours in order to be fueled to fight! Avoid the white hazards: refined sugar and flour and white potatoes. Beware of the fakes: trans-fatty acids and artificial sweeteners.

Skip the energy drinks!

Not only do they provide no nutritional value, they contain stimulants which may unnecessarily elevate blood pressure and do more harm than good. There is no substitute for a nutritious meal and a good night’s rest.

Fuel for your day!

Front load your calories during the day when you need them and eat less in the evenings when you are no longer when you are no longer as physically active. Consider fueling like preparing for a mission - bring in your supplies early in the fight so you are prepared. You won’t need those supplies when the fight is over! If weight loss is your goal, fueling earlier in the day has been shown to be beneficial. A 2013 study in the Journal of Obesity showed that women who ate more calories for breakfast, when controlling for all factors, lost 2.5 times as much weight as women who ate their largest meal at dinner time.

The CFS course is a 5-day in-depth financial training in the areas of counseling, investing, budgets, credit reports, car buying, TSP, insurance, identity theft, and referral services. Candidates must get approval by their command to attend the class. The CFS provides financial education and training, counseling and information referral to their units and other servicemembers. They would receive the CFS designation as a matter of record to be entered into their OQR/SRB and personal evaluation.

Volunteering supports the many valuable programs on installation and Marine Corps Leadership goals, and can help personal and professional growth.

The opportunity to volunteer comes in many forms: coaching children in sports activities; welcoming new families to your unit; or becoming a L.I.N.K.S. for Spouses Mentor, sharing your experiences with spouses new to the military. These are all great ways to volunteer aboard MCAS Iwakuni. Your volunteer work supports your friends, neighbors, schools, and ultimately makes a better community.

Volunteering benefits you personally as well. Your volunteer experience can help you get a job in the future by adding new and valuable work experiences and networking opportunities. Use your talents to make positive impacts.

What is the PVSA? It is the premier volunteer awards program, recognizing those who volunteer through presidential gratitude and national recognition.

Have you ever tracked your volunteer hours before? Can you imagine if you track all your volunteer hours in your lifetime, how many total hours you could have? Starting this year, there is a way to track your volunteer hours. Through the President’s Volunteer Service Award, your lifetime service will be recognized and tracked. Even if you move back to the states, your volunteer records will be there to continue to accumulate your hours. You just need to contact the volunteer programs office at your new installation. Any U.S. citizen ages 14 and older is eligible for this program. Registering for the PVSA is easy; tracking your time is easy- get started now.

Congratulations!! You just received notification your résumé was accepted and you now have an interview for the job you applied for. Now, let’s get you ready for that interview.

First, let’s go over your attire. As you probably know, first impressions are very important. First impressions take seconds for a complete stranger to either have a positive or negative opinion of you based on appearance; so it is vital to understand the ins and outs of interview attire. This is not the time to experiment with your wardrobe or hairstyle. If you are unsure about your outfit, ask a friend for their opinion. Or stick to the best rule of thumb, business casual. Business casual can be interpreted as khakis and a nice shirt and tie, or a dress with proper shoes to go with it. A splash of color is all that is needed. No loud patterns or colors, as they can be a distraction to the interview panel. The best advice I was given when I was younger was to always dress one notch above what is deemed suitable for the position.

Now that we have your outfit covered, let’s go over how to prepare for the in-

terview. Remember, it is totally normal to be nervous, everyone is! The best way to calm your nerves is to prepare for the interview. Just like an exam, you don’t go in without studying and hope for an A. The more you study, the more prepared you are; an interview is no different. Before the interview, go over the Position Description and research the department you will potentially be working for. Make sure you understand their mission and who they are here to support. The more you know, and more prepared you are, the less nervous you will be. Another helpful idea is to ask a friend, or spouse to do a mock interview with you. Have them ask you questions about prior work experience, your strengths, and what areas you can improve. Personal & Professional Development also offers classes and resources to improve your interviewing skills.

At the end of the interview you typically will have a chance to ask the panel questions regarding the position. Make sure you have at least two questions either written down or prepared in your head. Some suggestions are, “What are some of the challenges this posi-

tion will face?” “What is a normal work day?” “What are you looking for in an applicant to fill this role?” Show you put some thought into the interview and prepare yourself the best you possibly could.

One last tip, if you know a member or members on the interview panel act as if you have never met them before.

Do not assume that they already know your skills or experience. An interview is a time for you to highlight and show all of your knowledge and what you can bring to the organization. Make sure you show you will be an asset to the team.
