Have you noticed the shimmering pinwheels at the Cherry Blossom Triangle? On March 30 the Family Advocacy Program kicked off the nation-wide Child Abuse Prevention Month with a Pinwheel Planting event. 5 Daily

Exercises to Help You Stay Fit

by GySgt Victor Curly, MCCS Personal Fitness Trainer

With May being National Physical Fitness Month, now is the perfect time to highlight a few exercises to perform daily to keep you in shape.

Squats Legs and glutes are the primary movers in the body, and when you train your lower body right, it makes you stronger and faster. Start with your feet about hip-distance apart with your toes turned slightly out. Contract your abs as you lower in order to keep your spine straight. Extending your arms forward as you lower and then bring them back to your sides as you stand can help with balance. Finish your rep by fully extending your hips at the top position.

Incline push-ups and full ROM push-ups Proper push-ups can be difficult to perform. Performing the push-up from an incline is a good start for beginners. A good way to gauge this is to align the gap between your thumb and index finger with the crease in your armpit. Try squeezing your legs together, while contracting your glutes and abs to prevent any sagging in your hips.

Dips Dips are a fantastic bodyweight exercise for toning and strengthening your arms. Depending on your level of fitness, this exercise can be done in several different ways. Dips can be performed on the floor, or a raised surface.

Plank Planks are a good exercise to test your core strength. To perform a plank, get into the prone position and support your weight on your toes and forearms. Your arms are bent and directly below the shoulder. Try to keep your body straight at all times, and hold the position as long as possible. To increase difficulty, an arm or leg can be raised.

Glute Kickback Get in a kneeling push-up position, but with arms spaced shoulder at width. Your head should be looking forward and then bend of the knees should create a 90-degree angle between the hamstrings and the calves. This will be your starting position. Lift up your right leg until the hamstrings are in line with the back while maintaining the 90-degree angle bend. Contract the glutes throughout this movement and hold the contraction at the top for a second.

Spring has come, enjoy t he Spring fish, Yamame

by Mikie Watanabe, Cultural Adaptation

It is said Japan is a country of longevity because Japanese people eat a lot of fish. If you are not much of a fish eater, you may come to like fish while you are in Japan. Japanese people eat about 400 kinds of fish, with countless different cooking styles. Many kinds of rice, soy sauce, and miso are a good match for fish. Fish, shellfish and seaweed offer nutrients, vitamins and calcium to support health. There are findings that the risks of heart attack or stroke are reduced by eating fish, which helps keep blood flowing smoothly. Recently, eating any kind of fish throughout the year became possible due to refrigeration and advanced technology. But the fish taste more delicious when they are eaten in-season. Because Japan is an island, there are many different kinds of fish for every season. Spring fish play a role in supplementing vitamins and minerals that are lost in the winter.

If you would like to go fishing, the beautiful town of Asa-cho in Hiroshima has a fishing pond where you can enjoy fishing for Japanese brook trout called yamame. It is a freshwater fish meaning they can only live in clear, clean water. Even for beginners it is easy to fish and you don't need to bring your own fishing gear. There is also a place for grilling, so you can have a fun and relaxing day. If you’d like, the staff can prepare grilled, fried, and sashimi of yamame with omusubi (rice ball). There is kakigori (shaved ice) too and during summer, children can play in the pool to catch the fish!

Owning a

Vehicle

in Iwakuni for SOFA Personnel by Ken Snook, Transportation Supervisor

Hello to all fellow pedestrians, soon-to-be motorists! If you just arrived in Iwakuni and are looking at owning a vehicle, but are daunted by the paperwork and all the requirements to register and maintain a vehicle, well, Daunt No More! MCCS is here to help you through the process! Here’s the list of all the required documents that you must provide to PMO to register a vehicle: ** Vehicle Title (Proof of Ownership) ** Valid SOFA driver’s license ** U.S. Armed Forces Identification Card ** Proof of GoJ Registration ** Recycle Receipt (Motorcycle/Moped are exempt) ** Secondary Insurance ** Japanese Compulsory Insurance (JCI) certificate ** Proof that an up-to-date Road Tax has been paid.

The Vehicle Title and the Recycle Receipt should come with the newly purchased vehicle and the SOFA license and GoJ registration can both be received and updated at PMO. PMO can assist if any of these forms have been misplaced. For the JCI certificate, you can contact MCCS Typhoon Motors Monday through Saturday to schedule an inspection date. Typhoon Motors is located at the Northside Marine Mart complex and can be reached at 253-4385. Once the inspection is complete, a JCI certificate will be provided. For most standard vehicles, this must be renewed every two years. Typhoon Motors can also provide vehicle maintenance, repairs and a wrecker truck is available if your vehicle gets stuck somewhere or becomes inoperable. As for Road Tax, you can go right around the other side of the building and enter into the MCCS Auto Skills Center. From April 1-30, the Auto Skills Center accepts vehicle titles and provides service to update the Road Tax paid receipt. Prices vary for Road Tax, depending on the size of the vehicle. The MCCS Auto Skills Center is open Monday, Tuesday, and Friday through Sunday. It also has several bays/lift stations, wash racks, and all the necessary tools available for customer use. Alternately, if there comes the time that you just want to get rid of your vehicle, the Auto Skills Center will accept and dispose them, free of charge! Disposal paperwork will be provided for you to pass along to PMO for deregistration. Finally, Secondary Insurance! For this, you will need to provide the vehicle title to one of several insurance companies located right outside the Main Gate and purchase the required secondary auto insurance. Once all these documents are in place, voyage on over to PMO Licensing and Registration and they can help you get on the road in no time! And REMEMBER, drive safe and wear your seatbelt! What is Military Spouse Appreciation Day?

M

ay 12 is a national day of observance to honor the personal sacrifices military spouses undertake, in support of their spouses, their families, and our country. Such sacrifices include leaving personal, career, or education plans, plus family and friends, to move with their servicemember at the military’s need across the country, and even worlds away here in Japan.

A

mobile lifestyle can be fun, exciting and rewarding. That doesn’t mean it is without personal sacrifices. As spouses, we reinvent ourselves with each PCS, and our résumés and Facebook friends list illustrate that. Also added to that list are all the birthdays, anniversaries, and milestones we often celebrate without our spouses due to deployments, unaccompanied tours, TADs, TDYs, and exercises. This day is a national day of recognition of all of those sacrifices.

"Few Americ ans fully under s t and the sacrifices made by those who serve in uniform, but for spouses of service members across our country, the costs of the freedom we too often take for granted are known intimately. On Military Spouse Appreciation Day, we honor the spouses of those who have left behind everything they know and love to join our Nation's unbroken chain of patriots, and we recommit to giving military spouses the respect, dignity, and support they deserve.”

President Barack Obama Except from Proclamation 9442 Military Spouse Appreciation Day, 2016

& Bike

by E. Susanne Koch, Health Promotion Director

Spring is in the air,

and what better way to enjoy the beauty of Japan than on the seat of a bicycle! Recreational cycling is increasing in popularity, and being overseas has its benefits when it comes to getting back in the saddle. For those of us who haven’t been on a bike in a while, MCAS Iwakuni is a great place to get some practice in. Compared to most stateside installations, its overall size and large shoulder areas of the road can help get you acclimated if it’s been since elementary school that you have been on a bike. Top that off with the general culture and ease of transportation here in Japan, and you have a perfect formula to improve your cycling abilities.

Cycling is not only a great recreational sport, but is helping to improve the commuter situation across the U.S. Cycling, on average, costs 500% less than using a vehicle and $0.10/mile compared to $0.63/ mile by car. Cycling for work and errands can not only save you money, but will ultimately help improve your health. Riding a bike strengthens your heart, improves your body’s ability to carry nutrients throughout the body, strengthens your legs and core muscles, and burns calories.

Don’t forget Semper Fit offers opportunities to ride as part of our Indoor Cycling program and our ODR Cycling Trips. Join us on the Shimanami Trail May 20 and 27.

Safety Tips for Bicycling: •

Wear a helmet and brightly colored clothing.

Use a headlight and rear reflector at night.

Ride as near to the left side of the roadway as practicable. Use a bicycle path when available.

Always ride with traffic, not against it.

Avoid riding on sidewalks unless you are under age 13 or over age 70 and when construction is obstructing the roadway or heavy traffic.

Ride in a straight line (not side by side) and use arm turn signals.

Look before turning, especially behind you.

Ride at least 3 feet from parked cars to avoid being “door-knocked.”

Be sure you can be seen!
