Scary & Troublesome Giant Centipede Danger Level Aggression Lethality Intimidation Factor + If you’re new in Iwakuni, the first critter you will likely hear about is the giant centipede mukade. There’s just something unsettling about a slender multi-legged creature hiding in the dark corners of your house, ready to run out and startle you. The mukade does not actively seek to bite you and it won’t kill you, but it will hurt. Mukade or King Mukade
If you encounter a mukade in your home, just know they are hard to kill. Instead, grab your tongs and begin the game of capture and release. Let the mukade run away for it is said that if you kill a mukade, their friends will soon follow. M C C S I WA K U N I .C O M | A P R I L 2 0 2 1

Lethality
Intimidation Factor The Mamushi is the most venomous pit viper in Japan. This snake uses camouflage to protect itself and will not actively try to bite you. About 2,000-3,000 people get bitten each year in Japan and ten people die. A severe bite victim may be hospitalized for several days and full recovery could take several months. The mamushi is characterized by its triangular-shaped head and reddish-brown, grey, or yellow-brown blotches and can measure from 12-25 inches long. These sneaky critters can be found in a rural

environment like meadows, swamps, hillsides, rock outcroppings, and woodlands. There’s a good chance you may encounter a mamushi during a hiking trip.

You are more likely to see a Black Widow on base than off-base. The Black Widow is not indigenous to Japan and the introduction to the local area was likely through shipments of goods from destinations that have Black Widows. We are fortunate that the installation’s Pest Management Program has an aggressive approach to combating possible infestations and this effort has resulted in minimal risk to the public. - Jeramie Johnson, MCCS Safety & Environmental

What to do if stung •
Wash off the area immediately with seawater to remove any remaining tentacles.
•
Be sure to use seawater because using freshwater can cause more stings to occur. Do not use vinegar.
•
Remove remaining stingers by applying shaving cream or a mixture of seawater and baking soda or seawater and talcum powder to the affected area.
•
Scrape the tentacles off when it dries.
•
Use ice and over-the-counter skin creams, like calamine lotion, to relieve pain and itching. Rinsing or soaking the sting area with hot water may also help.

These eight-legged wonders are sand-colored, but blue rings appear on their body when they feel threatened and they are about to attack, hence their name Blue-ringed Octopus. While small in stature, these creatures are one of the deadliest in Japan’s waters and should be avoided at all cost. Symptoms of a blue-ringed octopus bite will progress rapidly in about 10 minutes. Early symptoms include: •
Excessive saliva production
•
Difficulty swallowing
•
Chest tightness
•
Numbness
•
Sweating
•
Paralysis
•
Lack of coordination
•
Lack of oxygen in your tissues, resulting in discoloration that appears as blue or purple.
These octopi are tiny and unassuming. They are found in small crevices and holes located in tide pools. They are almost what you may consider cute. However, they are not to be trifled with. A blue-ringed octopus bite is a true medical emergency because of how lethal its venom is. Seek medical attention immediately if bitten, even if you don’t suspect that the creature injected you with venom. There is no anti-venom for a blue-ringed octopus bite. - Jeramie Johnson, MCCS Safety & Environmental

What to do if you encounter an octopus and it attaches to you: Get away quickly If you encounter an octopus, do not stick around and observe. Swim away immediately. Show your strength If you do get caught by an octopus, show that you are a fighter and actively try to get away. Octopi want to see if you are a good source of food or not and will assess your strength by latching onto you. Watch the legs Once those octopus legs are wrapped around your arms or legs, it is difficult to get away. Peel them off If the octopus does attach itself to you, peel each leg off one-by-one and try to give it another object to latch on to. Once dislodged, they will usually float away. Somersaults Do somersaults while in the water several times and hopefully, the octopus get irritated and leave you alone. Swim to the top Octopi hate the air, swim to the surface, and peel it off and away from you.
