Aboard MCAS Iwakuni and social media, you may see references to the Single Marine Program or SMP. Although it is called the Single Marine Program, all single and unaccompanied servicemembers are welcome. Like the Army’s B.O.S.S. and Air Force’s Single Airmen Programs, the SMP follows these three components: Quality of Life (QOL), Recreation, and Community Involvement. Participation in SMP fosters personal and professional growth amongst single and unaccompanied servicemembers. This growth is found through QOL advocacy, engaging in community opportunities through volunteering, and recreational activities.

The Iwakuni SMP is open to all single and unaccompanied servicemembers aboard MCAS, regardless of branch of service or rank. Unaccompanied refers to any and all servicemembers who are stationed aboard the air station without their families, such as TAD servicemembers.

Defining the Three Pillars How important is the SMP to the Marine Corps? This question can be answered by reviewing at Marine Corps Order “MCO 1700.36B Single Marine Program (SMP)”. The order states, “As per reference (d), The SMP is a category A Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) program which is considered mission-critical and one of the most essential of the MWR activities in meeting the organizational objectives of the Marine Corps. Therefore, every effort shall be made to effectively operate this program with Appropriated Funds or APF as a mission sustaining program.”

12

P R E V I E W M A G A Z I N E | F I N D U S O N FA C E B O O K : M C C S I WA K U N I

APF funds the SMP. This means that tax dollars are allocated to pay for the program as opposed to revenue-earned dollars. The SMP is also supported by NAF (Non-appropriated Funds) through Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS). Most programs cannot be supported by both types of funds, but because the Marine Corps gives the SMP such a high level of importance, this is allowed. Therefore, no matter where you are in the world, you will be sure to find an SMP chapter at every Marine Corps Installation.

M C C S I WA K U N I .C O M | A U G U S T 2 0 2 1

13

To summarize, the SMP is essential because, as stated in the order, “The SMP fosters personal and professional growth in single Marines through QOL (Quality of Life) advocacy, engaging in community opportunities through volunteerism, and recreation activities. The SMP enhances total force readiness by providing single and unaccompanied Marines with opportunities to develop life skills, improve their general health, resilience, and morale while empowering SMP leaders to serve as advocates for their units and peers.”

Three Pillars Now that we’ve defined the foundation of the SMP, what are the pillars? The SMP is built upon three fundamental pillars.

Recreation Recreational activities provide productive and healthy alternatives for the positive use of leisure time. SMP activities improve resiliency by enhancing physical fitness, providing opportunities for social interaction, developing life skills, and experiencing culture. In addition, servicemembers who actively participate in the planning and execution of these activities improve leadership skills and learn program and event planning principles.

At MCAS Iwakuni, the Hornet's Nest is the home of the SMP and hub for all SMP Activities. The facility offers pool tables, gaming tables (for chess, board games, etc.), a fully functional weight room, computers, and gaming consoles (Playstation and Xbox).

The SMP also hosts events and trips, including:

Monthly events SMP Committee meetings - Held the first Thursday of every month. These meetings are made available so you can participate and have your ideas heard. Magic the Gathering - Play against your fellow servicemembers to see who's the best. 500 & 1000lb Club - A weightlifting competition held every second Friday of the month. Video game tournaments Super Smash Bros is a favorite. Dungeons & Dragons After Dark Get together and try a D&D adventure with new and old friends. Chess Learn & Play - Learn or teach how to play chess. Movie Nights - Hosted at the Hornet's Nest’s theater

Every month the SMP has trips available, here are just a few as an example:

Fukuoka Day Trip

Bunny Island Trip

Motonosumi

Tottori Sand

Inari Shrine

Dunes Trip

Beach Clean Up These are usually located at beaches within a short distance of MCAS Iwakuni.

The SMP hosts a variety of seasonal activities as well. Holiday-themed activities in November and December are loads of fun, so please be on the lookout as we move closer to the holiday season.

19

Volunteering Community involvement, or volunteerism, is defined as activities either developed or supported by the SMP that contribute to the base and surrounding community through voluntary participation. Many volunteer activities may qualify individual servicemembers for recognition under the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal criteria and Letters of Appreciation (LOA).

20

P R E V I E W M A G A Z I N E | F I N D U S O N FA C E B O O K : M C C S I WA K U N I

In addition, the SMP Executive Board may choose to appoint a volunteer as a “Volunteer Liaison” for the SMP council as a non-voting member. In other words, donating your time as an SMP volunteer could contribute to possible future promotion. But beyond the potential for receiving an LOA or promotion, volunteering can enrich your life by lending a helping hand to the local community.

Planning an SMP Event

Have you ever wondered how an SMP event comes together? Here is a breakdown of the process.

Here's a hypothetical

PFC Smith would like to have an Avengers movie marathon at the Hornet’s Nest during the next 96.

Have an idea for an event? Share your ideas with us at the SMP Hornet’s Nest.

24

P R E V I E W M A G A Z I N E | F I N D U S O N FA C E B O O K : M C C S I WA K U N I

First, PFC Smith needs to contact their SMP unit representative.

The SMP representative will present the idea at the next SMP Committee meeting, and voting will occur.

If the board votes in favor of the event, the idea is then turned over to the SMP Program Manager.

The SMP Program Manager then presents the idea as a Future Operations Brief to ensure it can be logistically supported.
