general hygiene
guidelines DON’T SHARE PERSONAL CARE ITEMS. Don’t share towels, water bottles, soap, razor, combs, brushes, or make-up. Anything that comes into contact with someone else’s skin could be contaminated.
WASH YOUR HANDS PROPERLY. That means using soap, lathering up (either warm or cold water is OK), and rubbing your hands for at least 20 seconds, according to CDC guidelines. Rinse well. Dry with a clean towel, or air dry.
SANITIZE IF YOU CAN’T WASH. If you don’t have access to soap and water, use an alcohol-based sanitizer. Pick one that has at least 60% alcohol. Apply sanitizer to the palm of one hand then rub your hands together. Rub it over all surfaces of your hands and fingers until your hands are totally dry.
BE SKIN CONSCIOUS. If you have a break in your skin, cover it with a waterproof bandage. If you have an open wound, skin break, or infection, avoid the pool and other common area until it heals completely.

DEBT FREE IS THE KEY Financing your future can be challenging if you are still paying debts. If you are carrying debt, you may want to adjust your relationship with money. Here are some methods that can help speed up the repayment process.
Avalanche payment schedule - Focuses on paying off the debts with the highest interest rates first. With this method you can save on interest payments by focusing on high rates. Snowball payment schedule - Focuses on paying off the debts with the smallest balance first. Being able to cross off the smaller debts first can boost motivation to keep going.
Choosing a payment schedule that aligns with your expectations is the beginning of financial independence. Develop a spending plan that includes paying off your debts. If you need some help, meet with a Personal Financial Counselor to discuss strategies on how to achieve your financial goals at Bldg. 411.

What is an emergency fund and why do I need one? Unexpected emergencies are a fact of life. It may be difficult to be prepared for all of life’s surprises, but having a fund set aside can greatly reduce anxiety during those times. An ideal reference for emergency funds should be three to six months of your living expenses saved up. Some experts recommend nine months to a year.
Job loss or pay cut If you lose your job or receive a pay cut, your emergency fund can tide you over until your income is stable again. This reduces stress on finding a new job and allows you to take care of your living necessities. Medical or dental emergency Your main job during a medical emergency should be to recover and not worry about how to pay for your care. Tax season Prepare early and set aside money to pay your taxes in April. Car repair Many people need their car to get to their job so having an emergency fund for repairs is essential. Have a goal You might be paying down your debt or ready to begin investing. Don’t let an emergency take you off track from your money goals. Your emergency fund will let you keep moving forward in the right direction.

Do you prefer investments with high returns, which can translate to more exposure to risk? Do you prefer less risk, or a more conservative approach to investing? Ask your Financial Counselor about determining your risk tolerance.

What is a FICO Score and why is it important? The FICO score is proprietary calculation created by the Fair Isaac Corporation and determines your credit worthiness. The estimated percentage of each category together determines the FICO score.
FICO Score Categories
10% credit mix 10% new credit 35% payment history 15% credit history
30% amount owed
The range of the FICO score is from 300 to 850. The average American citizen has a credit score of 640. The ideal score is 760 and above to receive the best interest rates across all different credit cards and loans. If you are a servicemember, you can receive your credit score for free by visiting the PFMP office in Bldg. 411 to receive your access code.
It takes time to build credit and it takes time to repair poor credit. The key is to establish good credit and maintain it over a long period of time. For this reason, it is imperative to start building your credit. If you have poor credit, don’t fret. There are things you can do to repair your credit. Talk to a financial counselor today by calling 253-6439.
